Don't think I've had the guts to try Linda before. I'll definitely need to scale it. Any tips for doing so? Should I keep the proportions between the three lifts the same? i.e., is it OK if, say, I can bench my body weight but DL only 120% of BW and clean 50% -- or should I pick a lower BW where I can DL 150%, bench 100%, and clean 75%?

I love Linda! This will be an easy PR for me to destroy. Last time I did this was on my birthday - September 15th 2008. It took me over 20 minutes and I didn't even do it as RX'd. My guess is sub 15 as RX'd.

Josh - #7 - If you are not as strong on one lift, only scale that one lift. Last time, I only scaled the cleans and did fine with the rest.

There are two great videos of Gillian doing Linda - One of the reasons why I love this workout. One video is from the previous day this WOD was posted. (click on link) She then beat her time when she did it at LaLanne Fitness in San Francisco.

I personally witnessed Jason Khalipa do Linda in 15 minutes and some change as Rx'ed at a bodyweight of 210#. It was m------ f------ brutality in motion.

Wow, doing Linda as r/x within a reasonable time is my main Crossfit goal for 2009.

I could do it but it would take me an hour and suck my soul for a week. My BW is 80kg but I'm gonna do this using 70kg BW this time, then 75kg next time and 80 the final time

Let's see...have to scale the weights, because being 225ish makes those heavy weights HEAVY... and have to figure out what to do with one good bar, a smith machine (ugh) and two crap-tastic curl bars (ugh ugh!) I can also use dumbbells, which might work for the benches, but still leaves me with the two extremes battling it out for the good bar! Maybe I'll just get a little breather slapping plates on and taking 'em off every round! ;)

Wow. I'm still hurting from Saturday's DL 5RM.

It looks brutal, and from reading Sep 2008 posts, plan to scale down to BW DL, 3/4 BW Bench, 1/2 BW clean and hope to survive the 55 reps of each.

Gillian posted a sub-15:00 ???! Maybe if it was only the 3 bars (and no weights).

I'm trying to figure out a ballpark number of calories to be taking in per day for my body weight, height, and activity level. I'm not quite ready for the full blown zone diet, but would like a rough number. I eat pretty balanced and healthy, but I think my intake is much too high! Need to start keeping closer track just out of curiosity. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I weigh about the same (and am the same height as well..) as #51 and those numbers scare me.
275 DL I can manage.
185 Bench press is probably going to have to be scaled down because I'm a failure.
I just cleaned 135 for practice today and can manage that, though.

Howdy all! Scrat here! I am so scared of tomorrow's wod - never attempted it before. Should up the suck factor by a whole lot. Hey Strong Lil Pony - I did the 300 wod tonight. Could only do 70 lbs on the floor wipers and struggled with getting my feet to the weights, but I gave it a try. subbed kettlebell swings for clean and jerks, but I got it in 19:38. Hope to improve on my form and eventually my time, but I will take it for a first time at this wod. And I hurt like a big dog. It kicked my hiney. Can't wait to try this thing - looks absolutely nuts!

Just got done digging through the Gym Jones site after listening to my boss talk about what a great guy he was and how "everything is on the site *if* you search for it.

Maybe I'm just dense, but after reading through all the self-important horn-tooting and straining my eyes for way too long at tiny white text on black, all I've come away with is a vague sense of how I am not worthy, and a calender listing workouts that have been done at the gym in the past.

This calender would be great if there was some expanation as to what some of the exercises actually entailed. I can put together workable workouts in some cases, but this isn't the case with all of them. I understand that the workouts are not posted as a guide for "outsiders", but as a record of sorts. It just makes me wonder, what's the point?

Plus, the way the site comes off, I am left thinking that the person who created it is a huge cocky a-hole. It was quite a relief to my eyes when I came back here to the crossfit site and saw "Linda" up there in all her glory, and a website that is actually intuitive and helpful in it's set-up. Everything on the site serves a purpose, and is helpful to someone like me who is trying to get started properly on the program. No crap about "Salvation", "Disciples", and gods-know-what. I'm not looking to train for anybody else but myself and my family. I don't feel the need to prove that I'm "worthy" to some bag in Utah that's made from the same dust as I am. I'm not "Gym Jones Material", I guess.

And if Mark Twight somehow sees this (highly unlikely to say the least!); I'm sure your a great guy over a couple beers, but your website makes you and your "disciples" come off like buttholes. That kind of attitude motivated me in high-school, but now it's just tired and old.

Anyhow, sorry for the vent.

Tried to do Tabata Something Else, plus the 4x800 meter workout. Didn't keep count of TSE, but did 3:30, 3:39 on first two 800's. Got called out so couldn't finish the 800's.

Can't wait for Linda tomorrow! Will prolly take an hour.

POWER CLEANS are fine.

Strongly recommend that you scale the WOD if it's your first time. Try starting with 7-6-5-4-3-2-1 for 28 total reps of each. Going from 7 to 8 is a big jump, 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 is 36 reps of each. My wrestling clients are strong guys and do the WODs as RXd. They begged me for weeks to try LINDA, I finally relented but at 7-6-5-4-3-2-1 scaling. They were beat down for several days afterward.

The first time I tried Linda, I made the 10-9-8-7 rounds (an Omani bodybuilder started a fight with me in round 7, he didn't like my aggressive power cleans) and had to quit. Only girl I ever DNFd. It would have been nice if someone had made me start with a scaled version of about 7!.

I would have ignored them and DNFd anyway. Some people insist on learning the hard way.

Unless otherwise specified, always assume squat clean! When it says "clean & jerk" the squat becomes optional, especially on Grace when it's ground-to-overhead anyhow (from Coach's mouth).

FYI, SQUAT CLEANS are the ONLY acceptable way to perform Linda if you want to do it as RX'D.
However, your competing against yourself so do what you want.

Crossfit HQ says a "Clean" is always a squat clean, except w/ Grace.

I can't stop sweating. I am ridiculously late for work and I don't even care. This was AWFUL - several times I considered killing myself in order to stop the pain without the stigma of DNF'ing

It is a killer, the middle rounds are the worst.

I scaled back the reps, not the weight for this workout. My numbers were 275 pound deadlift, 185 pound bench press, and 140 pound clean. The sets were scaled back to 7-6-5-4-3-2-1. For sets 7-5, I did power cleans, and the rest were squat cleans.

Only had one bar, so it took a lot of time transferring the bar from the bench to floor and changing the weights.

I'm here to tell you I think this is the hardest workout I've ever done on Crossfit. I've been doing it since May 15 2009. started out cleans were the toughest but haven't ever done many. 9th set was broken through 7th. Bench was never broken and the easiest. DL's started the easiest but were pure hell by set 7-1! Broken 8 through 7.

First time and I was slow!!!!!

Thanx to everyone yesterday who posted info about training through accute injuries (the biceps rupture guy, shoulder problem etc).. and whoever posted that link to kelly starretts video on the journal, it finally pushed me to subscribe after all this time, and got me back into training my upper body, after thinking i had to rest it bc of an over use injury to my shoulder.. long story short THANX especially to billy (who happened to be doing linda at my LA Fitness) for helping me through those barbell squat cleans. i'm super stoked to be training with my upper body again. Linda packish scale with 1 bar and no bench:

In retrospect, I think doing 2:1 push-ups would have been a good scale for this.

I spent a ton of time changing plates since I only have one bar. I put the 15s on the inside so I could just take off the 5s and 45s, but it still took me too long and man handling those 45s on and off every round got surprisingly tiring towards the end.

I also had to waste some time taping up a torn thumb in round 5.

This was just what I needed. Works has been stressful, this am, instead of getting up and swimming like always, kept hitting snooze until it was too late to go, then accidentally hit the panic button on security system, had to wait 30 min for police to arrive, thus very late for work (bless them, I am so sorry to make them come out!). Anyhow, when I stress, goes right to body image stuff. But the three bars of death put a smile back on my face ;)

Deadlift: 1 1/2 body weight
Bench press: body weight
Clean: 3/4 body weight
deadlift 250lbs
bench 150(should be 165, but after racking the dead lift I didn't have the weight, I had to take weight from tjhe deadlift to get to 150 as it was.

cleans were 125, got the frist round ok, second round I couldn't get the squat, was power cleaning and then squating, fell a couple..3 maybe 4 times in the squat position. got through the second set.

did sets 8 throuh1 with 105lbs on cleans to finish up.

Yime was 33:55. First Linda. What a weight moving reracking mess. Good Workout.

I scaled down to 70% of the prescribed weights. I have a lot of strength to gain. I'm still pretty new to crossfit and loving every minute of it. Like an above commentor, I may make the successful completion of Linda (she's tough) as prescribed as a major personal goal. Thanks to all. I learn much every time I access the site.

Today I weigh almost 10 pounds more than when I’ve done this in the past.

I decided to scale up the deads and cleans but keep my bench the same, since I never seem to improve on that exercise.

Dead: 220 (+35 pounds from usual; -24 pounds from RX)
Bench: 115 (the usual; -48 pounds from RX)
Full Squat Clean: 110 (+15 pounds from usual; -12 pounds from RX)

Much more weight than ever before, and over 5 minutes faster than I’ve ever completed this workout.

*Note to self; for some reason the bench press was light today. Barely needed to break sets and NEVER needed a spot. Must use more next time.

I can't do clean's because of an accident to my arm a few years ago. I can no longer fully pronate my forearm and that prevents me from doing a clean or front squat correctly. Any suggestions for clean sub? Back squat?

This workout was great - perfect - It hits every muscle of the body and is a total mind screw...I had to scale it down just to complete all the reps. I've never been a dead lifter so I know where I need work!

Cool deal on the CF Radio. We are celebrities.

Funny side note:
We had a blood draw at work today and they check all vital things (I am not sure but it's a lot of stuff). Anyway I got a call from the lab a few minutes ago very concerned. They said my glucose was very, very low and wanted to know if I am feeling well. They wanted to know how did I feel before the blood draw. I told them that I did Linda (a hard workout) about half hour before and thought I was going to pass out. She said that is not very healthy/ good. She also said that it completely depleted my glucose and wanted to know if I am eating OK. I said that I eat almost non-stop with strictly Paleo foods(then I had to explain what it is). I also stated that I have never felt better. I told her that I had an extremely fast metabolism so fasting 12 hours for me is like fasting for 24 hours. I thought the whole this was very funny. I can't wait until my yearly physical in a few weeks to talk to the doc about that, my diet and CrossFit. I'm sure I am 100% healthy.

I've done Linda a few times now.. the only question I have, to make sure that I do it As Rx, is if the order is critical?
Do you need to go D.L., B.P, Clean or could you go DL, Clean, BP?
I've done it as it's spelled out, but I think I like the other way better... either way it's very challenging... just as much mental as physical. I hate the end 3 rounds where you take a few seconds to get set, do the reps and then have to run to the other station, get set.. I always want to just stay and bang out like 7-8 reps and be done with the total reps required, but that's not the system... take it or leave it... I did that once when I was running out of time and still wanted to finish the reps.
I'm about 25 mins +/-.
I'd like to concentrate on my form, do it all really legit and break 25 tomorrow.
Please post if the order of the stations is critical... thanks.

Did this one at a "Gym" in Germany. Don't think they have seen much crossfit. One fellow took my bar after I tried to explain in broken German out of breath that I would only be another 3 min or so. I guess my German sucks because he took the bar when I was done with #4 and put it back on the bench, added 30 kilos did 3 reps and leaned on it talking while I finished my set. And the sun was in my eyes....

My back started to spaz around the round of 7 or 6 which slowed me down considerably.

Day 23 on the zone w/straight 15 blocks @ 1x fat. Even though, I'm still not all that lean (11-13% bf?), performance is starting to suck. I think I'm going to up the fat starting Monday and see if there is improvement. I've been hitting 25% under PR pace pretty regularly in the last 10 days...

That was nasty, considering I did well under 1/2 of the rx wod.

Used ezcurl bar for DL as I was out of bars.
Used my kids 1" bar and weights for bench. I couldn't fit any more weight on the bar, as those plastic ones take up a lot of space.

DL was fine, maybe I could have gone a bit more on that, bench was a little too easy, but the bar was full. Clean sucked. I got better at racking near the end, but clean was the worst.

This was my 4th CF workout ever. Heck of a welcome week, but I freakin' love it.

I've never worked out like this, so I'm actually still getting comfortable with the weight I can handle.

Ended up comfortable with:

DL: 205 (exact body weight)
BP: 60 lb dumbbells (couldn't get a bench at the gym)
CL: 75 (never done these before, was primarily concerned about form)

1:10 minutes. A few rests and lots of room for improvement. Bring it on.

Did two rounds (10's & 9's) in about 20 mins.

Dead lifts: 255#
Bench: 165#
Cleans: 135#

Stopped due to lower back still being sensitive from tweak on Saturday's WOD and further aggravation from baseball tourny on weekend.

Felt my dead lift form was starting to get too sloppy and lumbars were doing too much work. Looking forward to doing this wod again when back is healthy!

Note to self: Get another bar already!! (This wod is such a pain in the rear with only one bar!)

Linda, Yeah shes a pain and I have no room to talk. I only have just over 300 Lbs of weight so I had to switch during each event. I only did one round and ran out of time. Have to be at a soccer meeting. Yeah Yeah excuses I know, but I did the first round of 10 as Rx'd.

I may have been a bit slow in completing my one round but I am here to say that 10-20-30 years ago I was not strong enough to complete even one round. Thanks Coach, If I only knew then what I know now. ha ha ha

First time doing cleans today. Couldn't hit Rx, but powered through it all and feel accomplished. Only one bar though...ate up lots of time switching weights =/. Ended up taking about 40 mins.

a little under 25 minutes. Need to work on my hand grip strength... it limits me on these workouts. Awesome workout though...will work on getting weights up to prescribed amounts.

This is my first Linda, So I scaled it back, but I still felt myself struggling at the start. Now that I am done, I wish I wouldn't have scaled back so much, it started off extremely difficult but got easier and easier.

My DL record is 325 or 330 so I thought I could do 285 easily, but it felt ridiculously heavy after just one, so I thought there would be no way I could do 29 more, so I scaled to 225. Scaled back Bench, but shouldn't have scaled it down so much, I am thinking I will do 175 next time. Clean was tough, I was cleaning with correct technique about half the time and I did a full squat clean maybe 6 times total. Will probably keep the clean at approximately the same weight until I can do a full squat clean correctly each time.

I couldn't finish this one. I did 5x5 dead lifts yesterday so I was a bit spent already for those. Made it to round 4 and had to scale DL back about 15 lbs.

This is the 1st WOD I haven;t been able to complete. Kicked my hiney pretty good. Still feel like I had one of the best WODs though even unfinished. Next time.

First time in 4 years doing Linda completely as rx'd. Usually I use 225 DL's and 115-120 cleans.

Today dl 245, bp 165, cleans 125

Each Deadlift and Clean were done from a complete reset, no bouncing. Really working on my form.

Also had to rotate between 2 bars which took some time and it was hot! However, my time really ended up sucking. My BP felt good and only broke the set of 10.

Trying to do this in a globo is ridic. Had to give up a squat rack at one point. Ripped a calous and bleed like a stuck hog. Ended up w/ only two bars. Got to round 2 and had the bench stolen so I gave up.

This was the third time doing this one and I still suck. My lower back tightens up real bad when I get to the eights (due to form, I'm sure), so I slowed down just to try to losen up my back. Got through it though in about 40 minutes.

the BP was killer... aside from a few multiple reps in the first 3 rounds, I did single reps- then racked the bar to rest 20-60 seconds. 60kg would have been a reasonable wt to use.

Failed on the 8th rep of the 8 set on bench press, rest That was the only downfall. I sub'd dumbbell cleans for bar cleans due to a wrist injury. Did this one early July in 54 min. Felt worse on this one, but never failed on last one. 6 minutes could easily be attributed to not having to move the weights b/w DL and clean too.

i suck at life right now. my 1st linda attempt. i got half way through with it before my partners stopwatch died and i was shaking and had my inner ear pop.... i called it quits. i used up most of my blood sugar my muscles were at their fatigue point ..my cardio was good although i was dizzy due to the inner ear thing.. anway hope im kinda some where mid pack for the frist time linda

Deadlift: 1 1/2 body weight
Bench press: body weight
Clean: 3/4 body weight

Set up three bars and storm through for time.

Pack:
Either Scale the weight back
or
Drop the sets doing 10-8-6-4-2 with the rx’d weights.

Puppies:
Scale the weight back and drop the sets as shown above.

So I scaled for weight and reps.

DL started at 205 for the first 10 reps, 8,6,4,2 were at 185.
BP was at body weight at the scaled reps.
Clean was with 45 pound bar. I’ve never done cleans before so I practiced form. I think I need more practice. The last two sets of reps were at 65.

Time: 27:30

If you are new to Crossfit-and think this one SUCKED-dont worry-you are not alone....
I work out in a gym, where I halfway could get my hands on 2 different bars. In the start only 1 bar. This means I spent more time changing the weight than actually lifting.
My experience and advice is this: for these types of workouts, just drop them-or do the 45 reps for each exercise and time it.
Advice number 1 is of course to find a proper CF gym! Looking forward to start in Oslos first CF gym by the end of this month.

Linda is a BEAST!!!

This is the worst workout I've ever done! All I was worried about was getting to the finish line.

This is my 1st WOD of this type that I actually did RX'd and then some weight! I usually scale down (especially on bench press) but not this time!!! :)

Somehow I got magically better on the bench press! How in the world?!? I suck at bench press!

I also forced myself to do full hook grip squat cleans and guess what? I got used to the hook grip! I tried once doing it without a hook grip and I didn't like it at all! Horray!!! I still need to learn how to get under the bar though...

I weighed myself yesterday:

ALOT of time was wasted on changing collars, calling for spotters, and making sure that I had good form on the cleans. I spent ALOT of time on the cleans...

8 rep set scaled down to 225lbs from there on out. For me, more work in continous motion seems preferable than breaking with heavier weight. BP was the easy exercise. This is one of the most brutal xfit workouts I've done. Body will pay the price for at least 2 days. Watching Gillian do 14.59 is amazing. Don't know how sub 15min is possible, just starting my 6 rep set at 15min. Need to improve my DLs rep weight.

1st time doing Linda and I was unsure I would finish. One of the hardest crossfit workouts I have encountered. The deadlift was a killer for me. I sat at a sports meeting after that for my daughter and lamented that I didn't have access to this knowledge during my own football career in high school.

On vacation, no weights. Bench is my weakest of these 3, so did the 100-pushups WOD from ringtraining.com (brought my rings along). 10 sets of 10 different pushup-related movements on rings. Some were easy, some impossible to do with full ROM for me.

Cross Fit Day #3. Did this one with a friend, it was his CF Day #1. Due to previous comments, we decided to scale back in two ways so as not to die. We scaled back weight to 145#Bench, 195#DL, 100#Clean (About .75xBW, 1xBW, and .5xBW). We scaled back reps to 7,6,5,etc...

I wish we would have started at 8 or 9 and just died, instead it felt like I didn't push myself quite hard enough.

I finished in about 14:47, he finished in 14:19.

Doing a different workout at lunch to supplement. Live and Learn. Looking forward to Linda next time.

I just started Crossfit about two weeks ago with "Fight Gone Bad." I am on travel in Bangalore India but the hotel had three bars and I tried "Linda" and it was intense. I tried a 1.5 DL nearly busted a nut and had to scale the DL to 120% BW, and Clean to about 70%. I thought I was going to die on the third round (8 reps). After that, I managed to continue and finished in 25 minutes totally wiped, with breathing rate like I'd been sprinting. Tonight I can feel the burn in my hams and glutes. This was more brutal than "Fight Gone Bad" for exertion. I'm hoping for better performance next time (but not looking forward to it!).

As rx'd except used Hammer Strength bench machine which was probably much easier than using the free weights. All the free weight benches were being used by others.

My weight 180lbs

Deadlift - 275lbs
Bench - 180lbs
Clean - 135lbs

Break time was definitely during BP, which was the easiest of the three movements. Cleans were almost all broken into two sets except for the last few rounds. Deads were unbroken, but grip was getting slippery on the higher rep rounds.

Great WOD, tough, first time at it, so I didn't quite "storm through", just kept a steady pace throughout.

DL was the limiting factor and bad form most of all of it. DL sets were 3's and 2s.

A killer workout.
Can't really imagine getting in the 30's without a massive strength improvement in dead lift. Sets of 4 or 5 could make it doable but all in all a frickn tough one. Longest workout for me other than run 6 miles.

SO hard. Deadlifts are def the main sticking point. Bench was surprisingly manageable. Just didn't want to burn out completely. Full squat cleans.

Okay, I have never made a comment about someones post, but #191 I would have to see that to believe it. To see that the elite in this sport aren't breaking 20 minutes you either didn't do it right or its...well you know.

I only had two bars so I had to strip my dl bar for cleans which killed my time. I used every weight I had and wanted to keep the weight on the bench press bar for time so my dl was scaled to 265lb (should have been 295). Everything else was as rx'd=42:29.

Ooooouuuchh! First time doing Linda as rx'd. Last time, I did 80% of the rx'd weight and completed the WOD in just over 34 mins. Since I've gotten stronger in the last year, I figured I should be ready to handle Linda as rx'd.

How wrong I was!

Time: 1:46:42. Yes, that's one *hour* 46 minutes.

Only had one bar, so that definitely slowed me down a little. But mostly it was the bench press. I was essentially doing one set of two, then completing the round with single reps of bench press. Deadlifts and cleans were fine.

First time deadlifting and second time doing cleans, so I scaled this and didn't time myself:

Weights were
deadlift 185 (~bodyweight)
Bench press 135 (~75% bweight)
Clean 95 (1/2 bweight)

I went a good bit slower than I had estimated and had to stop after the round of 5's because the gym was closing, but that still means I got 45 of the 55rx'd reps of each exercise, so we'll just call that scaling as well.

Several days late, but I still did it, or got close to doing it, anyway.

Started with 245 for the deads, but only did six in the first round before my lower back told me I was doing them wrong again. Dropped all the way down to 135 to work on form in the next round, then up to 185, then up to 205, and then 225 for the final six sets. The BP and cleans (power cleans) were at the rx'd weight.

I have been doing CF for about 5 months now, have been very pleased with my progress, but this was by far my hardest WOD as well as it being my first time attempting it. This is only the second WOD that I couldn't complete due to exhaustion/passing out.
I only have one bar which eats up time. I only completed "rep rounds" 10(8:25), 9(18:44), and 8(28:20), couldn't start the 7th. Did those 3 rounds in 28:20. Poor performance.
I also scaled the weight. My body weight is 170#. But I used:
DL=205#
BP=165#
Clean=115 (messy)
Next time scale weight for easier exercise transition due to only having one bar, and alot enough time to complete the WOD.

I started out to do the whole thing but my DL form was bad and I didn't want to scale the weight so I cut the first set down to 8 reps and decended from there in the interest of safety. My bench felt strong and the Power Cleans were pretty good. I need to work on my Full Squat Clean for next time and I am going to really focus on my DL form. Next time I don't want to scale and my weight need to be bigger. And faster. My warm up from now on will be:

I'm kinda discouraged about this one, considering the fact that I have to DL 350# for 55 reps. Not trying to complain about the WOD, just that I'm probably (definitely) a little fat to do this one as rx'ed. Considering that I'm about 245 @ 18% BF I'm going to scale the workout back and do 82% of my body weight. That will put me at about 200#, I think I might be able to finish it at that weight.

Did first with recommended weights. I am 6ft 2 and weigh 225. After 10 rep round dropped to 225DL, 225bench and 135 clean. This isn't right!!!:)

Used 265(DL) 175(BP) & 135 (Squat Cleans)

Only had two bars so switched weights around between squat cleans and deadlifts. This workout is awesome/ful
