Sweet video. Cyber hug to Charity Vale and everyone else epitomizing that kind of spirit. I also hope OPT has been having a speedy recovery.

Comment #4 - Posted by: WeemsFit at August 10, 2009 5:50 PM

Charity Vale (aka Tooty) is my sister-in-law and one of my best friends. I just thought that everyone should know that her actions there at the games are not unusual to her and it was no surprise to those who know her that she did that. She is incredibly humble, sometimes almost to a fault. She LOVES to see others succeed and is just generally an amazing person!

I know this is a rest day so fewer people will read this, but if anyone is going to the Orioles game from the DC/Vienna, VA area, send me an email. I want to catch a game while I am up here.

Great video. Very inspiring attitudes and work ethics. I am always happy to see the down-to-earth, genuine, and humble attitudes of pretty much every one associated with CrossFit.

Way to go Annie!

I finished watching that amazing video thinking "why did he keep refering to her as Annie Thoris' daughter. Who is Annie Thoris, and why does her daughter not get called by her own name?"....then it clicked.

Ah, that was an absolutely amazing moment getting to watch Annie get her first muscle-up in that environment. And then watching Charity just demolish that chipper at the end was awe inspiring as well. So many good memories from that weekend! I'll never forget it!

Nice to see bingo on the vid too giving his exceptionally well spoken take on our community!

Happy rest day everyone :)

Will enjoy rest.. Anyone in the Lafayette Louisiana area?
Looking for an affordable place to train where I don't have to
run around the gym trying to keep the pull up bar, squat station, kettlebells, and MBs from people. Thanks CF!

Love, Love, LOVE the vid!!! Hey, who was the good-looking guy talking? The one with the baseball cap?? jeje Way to represent Bingo!! Charity you define AWESOME - the only way you could've outdone a performance like that (the wod) was with the one you did afterward cheering& coaching your fellow competitors!! Glad I was there to witness it all! I still love everytime i watch the vids of Annie's mu - seeing her judge (chuck) go through every motion with her!! Fantastical and again, that can only be found in the CF community! Big FRAT fontal hugs to all! :)

Comment #18 - Posted by: Cookie at August 10, 2009 7:39 PM

That was a great video.

And funny timing--I started a thread in the 'Running a CrossFit Facility' forum called 'CrossFit and Community' a few days ago, but it hasn't gotten much attention. If you are an affiliate owner or potential affiliate owner, you might find it interesting.

I think that one of the main reasons for CrossFit's success is the main site's ability--with the discussion board, the Games, and comments--to aggregate all of the different ideas of independent CrossFitters and affiliate owners to keep things fresh.

As Chuck noted in the Level 1 Cert I attended this weekend, many of CrossFit's "products" (the journal, the Games, most of the certs) were created by regular CrossFitters from all over the world. Having a place for these ideas to sprout, grow, and evolve is important.

Comment #31 - Posted by: Daniel Krull AKA "Franiel" at August 10, 2009 10:32 PM

Great video. I love that aspect of CrossFit.

My schedule has been off a bit lately (from the main site) so I did 30 muscle ups. Not for time, but for the fewest amount of sets.

Did 30 in 5 sets (6-5-6-6-7). Probably sat around 2-3 mins between sets.

Pretty stoked that I did it. At the bottom of a few near the end, I wasn't getting full lock out (or able to turn my wrists out). I did on the first few sets, but I'll have to clean it up a bit next time. Just glad I could hang on to the false grip for so long....

Comment #32 - Posted by: Matt_in_Oz at August 10, 2009 10:45 PM

Very interesting culture slides! On paper, netflix's culture sounds fantastic. I particularily enjoyed the context versus control section, that opened up with a quote from the Little Prince. I especially see that section relating to crossfit (also the notion of being surrounded by excellent people). I got really into Crossfit because I feel like it really introduced me to the capabilities of the human body. I became excited about being able to run fast, do gymstatics, move explosively etc. It was a crash course on the human body and the things it can do. Now I find I can relate better to my friends who are into sports because I have experienced some aspect of their sport during a WOD. Once you know what the body is capable of and the methods to go about training, training becomes an exciting and wonderful pursuit. This stands in stark contrast to control type techniques employed by fitness magazines that say "If you want to look like this, do this."

Great video.

I have to admit I got a bit misty eyed seeing OPT in the video like that... OPT is really an inspirational athlete, I cannot tell you how many times I have watched the Sub-7 Helen video before a WOD.

I was bummed to hear that he had to withdraw at the games, a true maestro in motion.

Comment #48 - Posted by: CFI Wink at August 11, 2009 7:45 AM

Great video. No question this community rocks. I think a lot of it has to do with its origins in the services - so many participants are military, leo, firefighters, the top competitors at the games are mostly trainers. What they have in common is that their basic motivation in life is to help others, to serve.

-Down for the count continues-

Anyone have recommendations on what I could train while I am injured with a "distall ruptured right bicep"?

So far my routine will be:
air squats
weighted vest air squats
back extensions
GHD situps
(later during rehab time) - plyo jump box
Running

I'm interested to hear what others' take on training one arm would be. I'll check with my sports med doc, but this is very depressing to think I can't do CF for up to 4 months.

I'll keep brainstorming innovative ways to work my mid body down without impacting my arm.

Thanks

Crossfit, as well as other sporting events that require great effort, and measurable progress, keep you honest. Honesty is a quality not often found in the public at large, but is inherent in almost every crossfitter. That honesty crosses over into all aspects of life - work, play, diet, communication, etc. That is what makes this community so great. Trust is not easily won, but is, ironically, automatic between crossfitters. Companies like Netflix obviously value honesty above all else too, because without honesty the 9 values the company is guided by fall apart.
I wish everyone crossfitted.
I wish it was a requirement for elected officials. Wouldn't THAT change things?!!!!!!

Much needed rest. Going to skip the next cycle to allow more recovery. My recovery has been struggling since coming back to the mainsite WODs from an Oly bias.

30 days of Paleo nutrition, as loose or strict as you want, with performance improvement of 3 WODs, done at the onset and at conclusion of the 30 days.

Luke #42,
The standard for kettlebell swings at the games was full extension and fully open shoulder.

Brad H, #51,
You only ruptured the bicep on one arm, right? So why not do one handed versions of push-ups, jumping pull-ups, snatch, clean & jerk, row, etc.? If you don't do anything with your good arm, then all you'll get is two weak arms after the bad one heals.

Comment #61 - Posted by: Nick Wise at August 11, 2009 10:20 AM

RE to Comment #57:

Hey AJT, while we're on the topic of the fitness "community," I attended a fitness conference in Alexandria, VA, this past weekend. During a 2-hour-long circuit training seminar ("Wha--?!") that focused on working out sans equipment, the instructor taught us an exercise that I thought was kind of cool: the A-Stand Pushup. This exercise is basically a pushup done in the Downward Dog position ("Tell J.T. to stop with this femme crap!") from yoga ("That's enough, banish him from this site! Boo! Hiss! [Catcalls]"), with the crown of the head touching the floor with each rep. I have yet to try an HSPU, but I think this exercise might be pretty good training to build up to one, judging by what it felt like to the muscles involved.

I believe that the principles of CrossFit can peacefully coexist with other wellness disciplines while doing our society a lot of good. Changing the world for the better requires a team effort, for sure.

Comment #62 - Posted by: J.T. at August 11, 2009 10:27 AM

Nick Wise,
My thoughts exactly! I am just concerned about significant variations on performance of each arm and symmetry of strength to the core. But I suppose I am willing to take that hit, I’m not in it to “body build”, I’m in it to be an athlete.
Does anyone else have inputs about how to train with one arm suffering a ruptured bicep?

Sounds like the pike position pushup, which I use instead of handstand push-ups because I'm a wimp.

A grappling instructor I used to work with also did yoga, and he used to put us through some of it, including downward dog, as a warm-up. Now, I'm no yoga enthusiast, but I will give credit where it is due: holding those positions was tough. People who mock yoga as silly or for weaklings (both of which I've heard) probably haven't tried it.

Another note on concerns with body balance and symmetry of unilateral movements:

Doing this type of training in the short course of healing from an acute injury has merit. Kelly Starrett has a great series on training the injured athlete. I would suggest watching his video:

http://journal.crossfit.com/search.php?IncludeBlogs=1&limit=20&search=injured+athlete+kelly&x=0&y=0

There has been shown to be some transferrence to the non-working side in stroke patients in regards to nerve regeneration and slowing the loss of muscle mass. Furthermore, the injured side catches up quickly after being cleared to work it at your own discression. Just make sure to progress it slowly and consistently once it is healed.

RE Goat, Comment #66:

Man, I hear ya, BW exercises that stress the shoulders and arms directly are completely out of my league for now. With pullups I can use the giant rubber band but I'm kind of at a loss with HSPUs, for now, but the pike pushup sounds like a nice path to the HSPU.

The greatest things about yoga with respect to helping one CrossFit better are the movements that force the hips open, e.g. warrior poses. They feel really good after doing any WoD that uses a ton of squat movements.

Truth be told I could probably benefit from yoga instruction, just for the flexibility. It's pretty much a fact that I am not motivated enough to stretch or do p.n.f. on my own, and the group setting of a yoga class would probably be the best motivator. If I belonged to an affiliate it might be a different story, but the closest is forty minutes away and they only have one C.F. class a week. Anybody want to loan me the money to get certified and open an affiliate?

I have a nutrition question. I have looked at the zone diet and would like to implement it but I am short on time to fully study the diet. Does anyone have an abrieviated version of it that I could read through? Generic meal plans would be helpful too. Not specific recipies but something like "Baked chicken meal, fruit, vegetable". I do have one specific zone question. How zone consistent is a breakfast of 2 over medium eggs, one piece of toast, a bowl of granola cereal and a small glass of oj. I am 6ft, 200lb male, about 14% body fat and very athletic. Thanks.

I remember tearing up when she struggled with her muscle ups, then broke down crying as she realized she couldnt win. Then when she hit her first muscle up I had to fight the good fight to not cry. The most inspirational moment by far. I have PR'd every weight and time since the games thanks to that moment. It's what gives me that extra push when I feel like quitting.

Comment #75 - Posted by: Binnings at August 11, 2009 12:52 PM

Luke (#74),

Let me guess...you're new here.

Crossfit asks that KB swings be overhead with full extension and fully open shoulder. Why? Because this generates more power by a large margin than the russian swing.

Before you, the apparent sole speaker for Pavel, go spouting off perhaps you should research some first. You are also not the first to come here and complain about "purist of sport" issues, Crossfit is evidence based fitness not faith based on a person who's teaching my never be questioned.

I'm curious if anyone does supplemental training regiments to Crossfit, particularly on "rest" days.

I run 4 miles daily, regardless of what CF says. I frequently will do my traditional lifting routine in addition to the WOD. Basically, I've been using the WOD as a "two-a-day" activity.

Anyone else go this route? If so, any advised regiments?

Comment #78 - Posted by: Ryan at August 11, 2009 1:40 PM

So it is a rest day and since I am going to miss Thursday's workout, today I am going to do a workout pulled from CF Coronado. It is for teams of 2, but today I am alone.
2 rounds for max points
Turkish Getups 53lb (4pts each rep)
400m Run
OVHD Lunge 95lbs (2pts each rep)
400m Run
KB Swings 53lbs (1pt each swing)
400m Run

And good luck on the Marine Corps. You sound motivated, and that's half the battle.

Kelly Clarkson in a People article:

"These days, the play part means golf ('I love it!') as well as Crossfit workouts. 'It's like bootcamp!' she said of the regimen that includes sit-ups, squats and running. 'You never work out more than 35 minutes, but it's so intense ... It makes me feel like G.I. Jane. It's very empowering. I feel like I can whup ass!'"

Today I did the five-round deadlift/burpees thing. Used 205 for deadlift, and did pullup burpees (jump up, grab parallel handles and kip a pullup).

Time = 14:28.

That's a tough workout.

brad h,.....dont cause a severe imbalance with your left and right arm.....let them both rest and heal...or you will do more damage later........work on your legs and core......get 1 legged squats...if you have them get 50 in a row on each leg!

CrossFit Northwest Arkansas has a box in Rodgers that I will visit next time I'm in the area, they look like a great bunch of people. CrossFit Little Rock has a website.
I'm lacking a rower and a rope and I'll have the whole set up. Best of luck.

I don't agree with that. Why would it be a good thing to let the good arm get weaker just to keep it the same as the injured arm? I understand how a muscular imbalance in certain cases, such as having huge, strong pecs and never working the back, can cause structural issues, but I don't understand how having one arm stay strong while the other heals can "do more damage later". Is there something I don't know?

I did "swimming golf" today - from Terry Laughlin's book on total immersion swimming, you swim 50s and add your time in seconds plus your number of strokes to get your score. Best score 67, worst 73, typically 70 or 71. Fastest 50 was 40 seconds. Pathetic, but probably waaay better than my golf score, which is an unknown since I have only played golf once! This is good technique work except I think I might actually swim more efficiently at a higher stroke rate so I can breathe more. But, it is not like I am good at this. It is still fun, and a great thing to do on rest days.

I was so impressed by the Netflix guide that I sent it to a bunch of friends. As I said to them, I normally don't put much stock in consultant-speak, but the slide show has some incredibly astute and thoughtful observations on how the better run a growing organization. While my experience is limited, I have seen many of the dynamics described in this slide show at my firm during it's recent, very rapid, expansion. I'm also guessing that those with military experience (my 3 brothers are in the service) will see a lot of truth in the slides. Really worth taking the time to read and absorb. Oh, and, based on the guide, at least one of my buddies is now seeing if Netflix has any job openings.

P.S. I triple-heart Annie.

Thor's daughter...took me a minute, DUH!
Awesome!

BREAK

REST DAY RAMBLINGS

Have missed a lot of home here in Iraq: kids, dog, BEER, friends...kids, dog, my little house, my jeep...did I mention BEER?

Can't complain really - we do have internet - though bandwidth is temperamental and can't get most vids, main page or otherwise…was lucky enough to get yesterday's "Steep Hill" video, wink, wink. Must've been because it was so "short," har, har...

Got just enough of the Women's Chipper video to see Christy P bang out 10 beautiful Toes to Bar...awesome...

Pretty soon we'll be headed back home to upstate NY...back to dog, kids, friends, BEER...and bandwidth...and a year's worth of CrossFit videos to catch up on...can’t wait to see the stuff from the games…

To GG/LG/CF Community,

For all that you give and have given,

Thanks.

No time to say more, but I wanted to post, again, one of my pieces on health insurance. The amount of sheer stupidity on this issue out ther, even on the part of conservatives, is mind-boggling. This is not the complex issue our radical President and his cohorts want to make it out to be. They want power, pure and simple, and this is one stepping stone along the way.

The end game is tp punish hard working white Americans for existing. At least, the ones who aren't ashamed of themselves and wearing sackcloth in public. We are seeing much of that latent anger now, in response to the temerity of ordinary citizens for using Leftist type tactics on leftists. The Horror.

As Obama said, the people who CREATED this society are not supposed to speak up, now, as he works to radically reengineer it. We are supposed to remain silent as penance for the sins of SOME of our fore-fathers. I don't think the sermons of Jerry Wright were all that ambiguous. Nor should we misunderstand his intentions in appointing a self declared Communist to be the "Green Czar", who even now is working to silence dissent. If you are paying attention, you SHOULD be scared. Not because of alleged Republican "scare tactics", but because we know next to nothing about the man who holds more power than anyone in the world, and what we do know all points to radicalism. This is the truth. I challenge anyone to argue otherwise.

Anyway, here's the link. Read it. It takes 5 minutes. The only thing I would add to it is Tort Reform. Caps on damages; primary penalty loss of license. Judgements to be made by a jury of peers absent trial lawyers, and according to clear standards.

Actually, I would add one more thing: mandated coverage. I hate to require anyone to do anything, but the simple fact is that the same math applies to health insurance as to car coverage. If you don't have insurance, and can't pay, then the rest of us do.

If you mandate that Catastrophic coverage be provided in all States, then you make it affordable.

More importantly, this addresses the "preexisting condition" boogeyman. As a compromise, we allow all existing non-insured pre-existing condition people to enter the Medicaid system. Moving forward, the problem will disappear.

Barry could you please provide a link to the video or audio where he says he doesn't want anyone speaking in opposition at the town halls.

I'm pretty sure he just doesn't want people screaming. So, you know, there could be a reasonable, level headed discourse among the individuals there.
