With a continuously running clock do one 135 pound Clean and Jerk the first minute, two 135 pound Clean and Jerks the second minute, three 135 pound Clean and Jerks the third minute... continuing as long as you are able.

Use as many sets each minute as needed.

Post number of minutes completed to comments.

"Use as many sets each minute as needed."

Not sure I understand what that means, does it mean that on minute 8 I can brake the C&J into 4 sets of 2? 3 sets of 4 on minute 12, etc?

I suspect it does, but not quite sure...

In any case, this looks like it could be really brutal.

Comment #4 - Posted by: Ian M/32/84kg/1.85m at July 27, 2009 4:33 PM

I guess it means broken is okay as long as completed within the minute.

Comment #5 - Posted by: BAdams 30/5'11/185 at July 27, 2009 4:39 PM

Yes you are correct every time you stop and rest that is a set. Use as many sets as you need to complete each minute.

Comment #6 - Posted by: Gabriel at July 27, 2009 4:41 PM

I remember this.

It sucks, but in the best way possible of course :) Especially if you do the full clean, which i did last time

Comment #7 - Posted by: Eric Gohl 22/5'10/162 at July 27, 2009 4:43 PM

Can I rest after the fifth minute for like 2-3 minutes? and then continue to do minute number six, as long as I complete as many reps in a minute as instructed ?

So the time you're posting - is the minute that you reach ? Like reaching different levels?

Comment #8 - Posted by: Arnar Fryer at July 27, 2009 4:46 PM

What's the deal with the vid? How can anyone not be against anabolic steriods? Sure, it gives you a boost when you first start taking it, but then bam, your dead at 50 or if your lucky 60. Too me this is completely against the idea of Crossfit. I believed Crossfit's mantra (and doing the Zone and Paleo diet) was about increasing overall health through fitness (and eating properly). If your going to post a vid, make it a vid about some man who lived to 120 because he ate right and exercised. Having a vid with a guy saying that he isn't for or against it just seems wrong.

I do agree with the guy's statement about anabolic steroids being like a trump card.

Comment #9 - Posted by: Fin m/27/5'10"/198 at July 27, 2009 4:46 PM

I think the video was meant more for looking into the ceiling of human potential and it is inarguable that steroid use can raise that ceiling, not to godlike levels, but can raise it nonetheless.

Also, I am interested to see if anyone beats the CF games champ Mikko Salo's PR of 14 minutes and bear in mind minutes 9, 10, and 11 make a three minute grace.

No, the clock is continuos and does not stop for you to rest. And yes to your second question. I.E. if you make it through the tenth minute we could infer that you did 55 reps.

Comment #12 - Posted by: Austin at July 27, 2009 4:56 PM

Hey FRAT,

I STARTED CROSSFIT ONE YEAR AGO TODAY. Feel free to write as many words of encouragement and congratulations as you like. Hope everyone is well.

Wallball/GHD/Hyper - 11 2/3 Rounds.

p.s. - First WOD was Michael 22:02

Comment #13 - Posted by: John-In-Jersey at July 27, 2009 4:59 PM

I guess I see that now #10, I just didn't like how the guy said he isn't pro or con steroids. Too me, someone genetically blessed with high blood pressure and high resting heart rate, the negatives outweigh any positives.

Comment #14 - Posted by: Fin m/27/5'10"/198 at July 27, 2009 5:06 PM

So I would post that I reached the 10th minute in 15 minutes ? Or does it only count if you do the 10 minutes simultaneously?

Comment #15 - Posted by: Arnar Freyr at July 27, 2009 5:09 PM

#15- It means you have to do the 10th minute in 10 minutes... that what it means by as long as you are able... if you cant do 10 in the 10th minute then you are done... at least thats what I infer...

Comment #16 - Posted by: b at July 27, 2009 5:12 PM

It would only count if you did the ten minutes in a chain like fashion, with one minute moving into the next. So the longer you go, the more work and less rest you get in each minute.

I've never done clean and jerks..does this mean we are suppose to clean the bar from off the ground every time? Or I can bring it down to a hang and then clean it?

Comment #22 - Posted by: Shely at July 27, 2009 5:21 PM

Where do I find the crossfit warm up?

Comment #23 - Posted by: Shely at July 27, 2009 5:26 PM

Tate, I think you're a misguided soul who's opinion makes him feel better for chosing to do drugs at some point in your life and does nothing for the problem in high schools across the country. To the gentlemen laughing beside him, I know you're in all the vids and cfj articles, but that was so not "awesome." Granted...I didn't watch the whole thing, but the clip shown doesn't entice me to by any means.

Start cleans from gound. If you've never done them before I would scale back the weight.

Go the the FAQ to find the warmup (Section 1)

Comment #25 - Posted by: charlie at July 27, 2009 5:32 PM

shelly, if you have never done clean and jerks i wouldnt make this your first attempt. take the day and learn the movement, watch the C&J videos... and practice instead of doing the wod. it will come around again, dont you worry. the CF warmup is in the FAQ's 1.8 i believe. good luck

Comment #26 - Posted by: dani at July 27, 2009 5:33 PM

this is an interesting video and it's funny how people who have never researched them conclude their devastating affects. if someone chooses to use them or not is up to each individual. kill you by 50? please post scientific data to support this...in fact, please post any proven scientific evidence that it causes/caused a single death in the last 30 years.
crossfit imo help s natural barriers to be broke all the time and that's what makes it so interesting that ceilings are being broken with all the while being in a sober non-enhanced state.

Comment #27 - Posted by: Jeff at July 27, 2009 5:34 PM

I thought the video was awesome and the guy makes an good point about vitamin S being the Ace card. You can only use it once. And I hope he is right about it might not even helping on something like the games.

Interesting WOD. 3 min grace on rounds 9, 10, 11 huh.. My best Grace is 3:21. I doubt I'll get that far.

Comment #28 - Posted by: rodrigo at July 27, 2009 5:36 PM

Same question as Shely. Do the cleans have to be full cleans or can we hang clean to save time in each minute.

Typically just "clean" means power cleans, but i just want to be sure...or does it not matter, just post what you do?

I try a cycle from time to time. Whats the big deal? Who are you to judge? Who is worst.. the guy who has 2 beers or 2 glasses of wine at dinner or a social and drives or the dude who takes an occasional cycle?
Do I agree with testing at the games and other sports.. Yes.

I'm a frequent reader of this page and this is my first-time ever posting but after seeing that video of Tate, I feel obliged to comment. I should say that I am starting med school soon and am not a physician, but do have a vested interest in medicine, health and science in general. And, I've seen the peer-reviewed data out there on ergogenic aids.

I felt some agreement with #9 but more with #24. Regardless of whether you support steroid use or not (and stigma aside), no one knows what it might do to your health in the long run (be it increased risk to cartilage tear or even cancer, which has been proposed). I'm stunned that CF (of which I'm a long time supporter) would post such a video that even passively condones or treats this issue like a joke (see laughter left to Tate's laugh as #24 pointed out). It's one thing to give someone like Tate a platform, which is admirable, but what type of message does this video send?

#32 who cares about relative evils of various vices, do you really (and I mean really) know what trying a cycle might do to your body in the long run? Who knows whether steroids are completely safe and a magic bullet to the bigger, the faster and the stronger, but we certainly don't know if it's safe to take. I started CF specifically because I thought it was THE best, fastest, safest and scientifically-supported (at least in theory) way to better my athletic ability and overall health. In the context of the lack of data on steroids, shouldn't CF be condoning more pure and scientifically-backed exercising/dieting strategies? As #9 suggested, I agree that this seems like against the spirit of CF.

But, I am a realist and I do agree with Tate in one and only one respect: that I can understand how sometimes some ppl do need to pull out the steroid card to get out of poverty or get that scholarship or put food on the table(even if it means possibly sacrificing your health in the process).

Comment #40 - Posted by: jmc at July 27, 2009 6:12 PM

@ dani, yea, I'd like to get this cleared up as well. All the videos of grace show the athletes doing whatever works to get the bar overhead. Oftentimes, the bar is caught in a partial squat, that same squat is used to drive the bar overhead without straightening the legs to make it a power clean. I think as a three month long crossfitter I'm going to do grace, I'd like to spend some time practicing my c&js.

2 questions for any takers.

#1 Does it matter to do crossfit site then crossfit endurance, or are folks every reversing order?

#2 I enjoy both sites, crossfit and crossfit endurance. However, my time (and body) will often not allow both. Is there a good ration between the two? Do people ever do crossfit site for a month or so, then crossfit endurance site for a month or so and then revert back to crossfit site?

Love to hear any opinions!!

Honestly, I love the Dave Tate videos. I think he hit it spot on. I work daily in a field that has a lot of other guys doing Vitamin S. While I don't condone it I do notice that it benefits some. For me personally I have no desire to try Vitamin S, but I have come to terms with the fact that it is an effective "level" booster. For the guys I work with that think that they can use it in training to get to the next level, good for them... but is it going to carry them into the next level and beyond remains to be seen. Because of my trade, (I'm not an athelete) I don't see the purpose in relying on a supplement for performance. If I was an a Oly lifter I might think differently.

I've worked with a lot of HS/College atheletes and have heard many stories about vitamin S and Dave really reminds me of these guys. I don't think he's condoning it as much as he's is just telling the cold, hard truth. Concerning Vitamin S "Bigger, Faster, Stronger." is an interesting documentary to watch.

Comment #52 - Posted by: A.M. at July 27, 2009 6:52 PM

Here's a concept that works. Work hard and be thankful with the abilities and strengths that were God given to you. I'm not saying you take steroids you're scum, but I am saying it's an easy fix that won't last long. I think I would rather test my abilities as I am now. If I took steroids I would know at the end of each workout that, hey, I only got those extra 2-3-4 rounds because of a needle induced power pack. That's not proving to yourself or anyone else in how good of shape you are. That's showing everyone else that you weren't willing to put in the extra effort through: diet, workouts and rest to be that much better. I ran college track and played a couple years of college football and saw people using steroids and I was always so disappointed with the lack of effort was shown to just improve themselves through hard work.

Unless you are willing to drench yourself in your work beyond the capacity of the average man, you are just not cut out for positions at the top.

Opportunity is missed by most because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

George, #32

I don't think we need to judge anyone, the law is perfectly clear when it come to steroids.

"Without a doctor's prescription for a medical condition, it's against the law to possess, sell, or distribute anabolic steroids. Steroids are Schedule III substances under the Controlled Substances Act.

Legal prosecution can be a serious side effect of illicit steroid use. Under federal law, first-time simple possession of anabolic steroids carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $1,000 fine. For first-offense trafficking in steroids, the maximum penalty is five years in prison and a fine of $250,000. Second offenses double this penalty. In addition to federal penalties, state laws also prohibit illegal anabolic steroid use.

Anabolic steroids are powerful hormones. They affect the entire body. Some of the side effects are common to all users. Other side effects are specifically related to your sex and age.

Men who take anabolic steroids may:
Develop breasts
Get painful erections
Have their testicles shrink
Have decreased sperm count
Become infertile
Become impotent

Women who take anabolic steroids may:
Grow excessive face and body hair
Have their voices deepen
Experience menstrual irregularities
Have an enlarged clitoris
Have reduced breast size
Have a masculinized female fetus

Both men and women who take anabolic steroids may:
Get acne
Have an oily scalp and skin
Get yellowing of the skin (jaundice)
Become bald
Have tendon rupture
Have heart attacks
Have an enlarged heart
Develop significant risk of liver disease and liver cancer
Have high levels of "bad" cholesterol
Have mood swings
Fly into rages
Suffer delusions

Teens who take anabolic steroids may:
Have short height due to arrested bone growth
Girls may suffer long-term masculinization."

As far as Dave Tate, I don't care for the way he presents himself. He may have something to offer to this community, but presently he does not communicate what he has to offer as infectiously as he might like. He may find that he reaches a broader spectrum of people if he were to act more like a gentlemen in his future public speaking endeavors.

Has anyone seen the Bigger Faster Stronger movie? Gives a different take on steroids. You should check it out, it will at least make you think twice. My problem is, why are steroids illegal, but any jokester with kitchen products can make a dietary supplement that is legal. I have not every used steroids, but I believe that there can be a place for them. There are plenty of things that are good in small doses but can be harmful if overused. Alcohol, vitamins, Tylenol, Fire, etc. Hell if you wanted to you could totally destroy your liver in one day by overdosing on Vitamin C!! Maybe it is time to do some more research on steroids to see if they are truly harmful, but because they are illegal, that can not happen nos.

I watched the Bigger Faster Stronger movie. It actually did make a lot of sense and make you think, so i'm glad it was brought up.
Don't really understand why all the bashing on Tate is going on. I personally had a really hard time following his lifting instruction, but this video actually made sense to me, whether it may be a sad fact or not. It is what it is and he's not trying to fool anyone.
And for the record I'd never use anabolic steroids...ever. Just so we're clear :)

Comment #66 - Posted by: Eric Gohl 22/5'10/162 at July 27, 2009 7:53 PM

While I feel it's perfectly fine for Dave Tate to have his opinion on this, I'm not sure what the point of posting it here is. CF obviously knows that the videos (and rest day articles) it posts will have influence on the audience, so why post something that certainly seems to contradict the recent drug testing it conducted at the games?

While I do believe (from what I've read, I've never used) that steroids can be detrimental to long term health, this isn't the issue. And comparing it to drinking and driving (#32)? Completely irrelevant in my opinion. It's about fairness in competition. CF needs to be CLEAR about where they are drawing the line as far as the Games are concerned, and posting videos like that are sending mixed messages. I personally would love to try and qualify next year, but I'd like to know whether I'm up against athletes using whatever they want or athletes who choose to do it without steroids. Again, it's all about the line being drawn - if they say no protein bars, then that's fine. Just draw the line somewhere so we have a level playing field.

If people want to roid up on their own and won't be competing, then that doesn't bother me. But it seems that the CF Games are a big enough part of CrossFit that the line needs to be clearly drawn.

#56 - I ripped a callous for the first time about a month ago and was really pissed since it set me back for a while! Since then, I have been cutting them off with small scissors, then taping them up before hi-rep pull-up WODs. Seemed to work out well today for 14+ rounds of Cindy. All I can say is it took some experimenting to figure out what worked for me. I suspect you will come up with a solution that works for you eventually, and that it might not be the one I suggest above. Don't bother with gloves. I would recommend an alternate WOD for you tomorrow unless you really want to f*** up your hands even more. In my humble opinion, better to heal up and come back full strength sooner.

You should subscribe to the CF Journal (if you haven't that is). There are a few really good articles on dealing with caluses (curing and prevention) and some videos talking about ways to alter your grip to reduce them. The Journal is full of useful info, just search the archives for whatever topic your interested in and there will probably be something. But to give a simple answer to your question: Keep the rip open to the air and moist with antiseptic ointment (vitamin E oil is good too) whenever possible. When sleeping wrap it lightly with gauze to keep the sheets from getting yucky. When it's time to workout again, it's nice to lay off it if you can but a proper tape job with some kleenex over the ripped area can allow you to do most WODs with little extra damage. (taping is also talked about in one of the jorunal articles). Good luck!

#42 BRC Nashville:

The CFE site typically gives recommendations to do its WODs either before or after mainsite CF, depending on the day and the workouts. If your schedule doesn't permit that order, so be it, but I'd guess you should try to follow the reco if possible.

Smitty's right, taping before a WOD like Cindy will help a ton. Also if you want to invest in gymnastics grips they will save you a ton of skin though they aren't considered legal to use in official CF events (kinda like those super fast swimsuits).

Comment #72 - Posted by: Andy Buckman at July 27, 2009 8:19 PM

So I know that Clean is supposed to mean full squat cleans unless otherwise stated but in this case wouldn't change this WOD from Clean and Jerk to Clean and Thruster? Or is the pause and reset at the top of the clean required? Are the movements allowed to transition smoothly?

Just random thoughts. I'm curious what the ruling in the CF games would be on this. Any comments?

If you use a Crossfit facility they should have rubber bands to assist with pull ups. When those bands break my gym uses pieces of the broken band to place in between the bar and their hands. This gives you amazing grip without tearing up your hands. I guess you could get yourself a pair of gloves if you do not work out at a Crossfit affiliate. As for tomorrows workout you could try to get a product called new skin, use the bands, or gloves. Whatever you decide to use or not use, it's going to hurt like hell. 3-2-1 GO!!

#42 (BRC nashville), I like both CrossFit and CrossFit Endurance as well. I think both are great programs. CrossFit endurance has definitely helped my run time. I kind of mix and match as I see fit. Twice I've done a CF and CFE workout in the same day, and I was really smoked at the end of the day. Personally, I don't have the luxury of the time or energy to put into more than one session per day, so I normally don't. Plus, I don't know if I'd be able to recover very effectively.

As far as mixing and matching the CF or CFE workouts, if I'm really stringent about it, I'll do two CF workouts, and then a CFE workout, then take a day off, and repeat, moving the CFE workout around to be day 1, 2 or 3.

It seems to work well for me, and I recover well that way.

Great video! Honest, funny, and even thoughtful. However, I am sure x perscentage of people switched the brain to 'off' and the ears to 'closed' and missed the point just because Dave Tate said the word steroids.

Comment #77 - Posted by: Scott at July 27, 2009 8:34 PM

the (reformed?) 'roid head in the video has a really good point: juicing in high school or college is a stupid waste of money, and the only reason people do it is because of vanity.

others do it to extend or excel at a professional career in sports, and some are able to make millions as a result. Was it the juice that made them good? could they have done well without it? Does making money as a result of juicing make it ok? Is this not also vanity?

You cant get something for nothing, and if you juice, you do pay for it in flesh, sooner or later.

That was a very dissapointing video. I love crossfit. I love everything that crossfit stands for. I have tried supplements before like nitrix. Though I did have a little increse in size and strength, my overall health deteriorated. My blood pressure went up as well as my resting heart rate. Now that I have been doing crossfit and the zone diet for a year- my strength, endurance, and health are the best yet. I will never use any type of supplement again besides my normal vitamins. Please post videos that support us achieving our goals naturally and healthy. CROSSFIT FOR LIFE!!!

Comment #80 - Posted by: Andy at July 27, 2009 8:51 PM

I thought the video was great! He's not advocating the use of steroids, he's being realistic. If you are going to be in this industry performance enhancers are a reality. He's actually saying that they are not for everyone and that you better be pretty high level for them to be worth your time. Hard work must come first, and even if you are using them, you better be working harder, and smarter, than every other guy who is.

Fantastic coach and fantastic guy who has given his whole life to strength training. He is far from a "meathead" and having worked with him firsthand he has forgot more training ideas than most of us will ever have the chance to learn. His website is free information (which everyone here seems to always bring up about the HQ website) that features some of the top strength coaches (not just powerlifters) in the country.

Check out www.elitefts.com. Your totals will probably go up.

Didn't watch the vid. No desire to after reading the previous posts. Been doing crossfit for 7 mos. and have had guys at our gym talking about the need for me to add some kind of protein supplement to my diet. I have 8 mos. new sobriety an am 39 years old. Crossfit has given me more than I cold ever have dreamed of. I know nothing about vitamins, etc. but I did buy and read The Zone and have incoroporated it into my life. Another blessing. Any suggestions as to what else I could be doing to increase my level of fitness? I am definitely in the best shape of my life (3 star lettermen in HS, boy that was a long time ago!). Crossfit Rocks! #78 - Gymnastic grips. Try gibson gymnastics gear (don't know the site) and get some high bar grips. The tolerance and enjoyment of ripped hands in crossfit is funny. Torn hands doesn't make you tougher, stronger or better. There is a reason that a gymnast wouldn't consider training without his grips.

EEEEeeek! I don't think that sent the greatest message. Let's breed genetic Crossfit freaks and watch all the records be broken, Yayy??! Not a very promising feeling. Curious of others take in using steroids.

Comment #88 - Posted by: apollo at July 27, 2009 9:34 PM

Not sure why why Budding thinks its "awesome" that pro-athletes would be frustrated by high school kids taking all the quality gear. That had a decidedly pro-steroid feel to it. Can one infer that CFHQ is quasi-accepting of an athlete playing the Ace card, albeit just once, to get to another level or are they showing the Tate video as a sad contrast to the unbelievable natural hormonal response elicited by CF training? Not sure. I'd like to think the latter. I love thinking about the neuroendocrine response that this 40 year old has gotten from something like Fran. Maybe the message is try CF to buy pass this meathead logic.

There is so many things wrong with that video clip I don't know where to start, but let's start with who put it up. Crossfit has tied together the concepts of health and fitness, but by posting this video, they tempt the un-educated into thinking there is a place for steroids in training. Crossfit HQ, you need to sever all ties with this guy right now. Your tie to him blurs your stance against steroids and for healthful living, if indeed that is your stance.
For those that think that doing a cycle now and then is a-ok, you need to do your research. There have been several medically supervised government run doping systems that have caused a life of health problems to the athletes. There is no such thing as an inane dosage or time frame for steroids, only different levels of deleterious effects (see East German women's swim team, Chinese women's swim team, etc..). For those that are using or considering it, just start doing your pull-ups to your forehead, doing half squats and butchering ROM in all exercises. Your times will improve dramatically and you won't shorten you life.

Comment #97 - Posted by: JeffP at July 27, 2009 10:17 PM

#78 - Use some gymnastic grips. Gibson gymnastic supply (don't know the url) has them. Go for the high bar grips. Trashed hands do not make us better athletes and no, your hands will not adjust inline with your strength. There is a reson why no world class gymnast would train without their grips.

Crossfit FAQ
"1.6
If you train the WODs hard, and eat right and get lots of sleep, you will definitely gain lean mass, lose fat, and yes, you can build muscle mass with the crossfit protocol. More specifically, according to Coach,
Here is a hierarchy of training for mass from greater to lesser efficacy:
1. Bodybuilding on steroids
2. CrossFitting on steroids
3. CrossFitting without steroids
4. Bodybuilding without steroids
The bodybuilding model is designed around, requires, steroids for significant hypertrophy.
The neuroendocrine response of bodybuilding protocols is so blunted that without "exogenous hormonal therapy" little happens.
The CrossFit protocol is designed to elicit a substantial neuroendocrine whollop and hence packs an anabolic punch that puts on impressive amounts of muscle though that is not our concern. Strength is.
Natural bodybuilders (the natural ones that are not on steroids) never approach the mass that our ahtletes do. They don't come close.
Those athletes who train for function end up with better form than those who value form over function. This is one of the beautiful ironies of training. "

Are we going towards bodybulding model now if the efficacy of BB and vitamin S trumps CF and Vitamin S ??? Does proper nutrition (as per recommended CF prescription) takes secondary place??? I hope this video is aimed to 'stir the pot' and not to hint at the future.

Comment #99 - Posted by: hetman at July 27, 2009 10:33 PM

The strong opinions expressed in that video are simply those of Dave Tate. I don't agree with everything he says but by all means the crossfit community should be open-minded enough to encourage free expression regardless of whether or not one's opinions represent the CF 'moral majority'.

If you watch till that end of the video, you will notice that the conclusion is: even if you wanted to take drugs for crossfit the demands of this sport are so diverse, and the effects of single drugs so detrimental to other areas of fitness that you would have to take everything to offset the effects of the other drugs.

This would cost an absolute fortune to do, and my take on it is that if it costs so much and the person is going to have to be taking 7 different drugs every day it's going to be damned hard to keep it a secret!

#62 The beauty of crossfit is that it attracts people who think for themselves. It is so counter to the mainstream fitness culture, this is evident. So I don't think you need to be concerned it will influence this audience at all.

I doubt we'll see a pronouncement on steroids because the crossfit official view is already clear - there was drug-testing at the Games this year. As clear a statement as one could imagine that Greg Glassman does not think drugs are ok. I have a secret theory this interview was actually posted to DISCOURAGE people from doing steroids for crossfit - Tate's clear statement at the end that it wouldn't help crossfit performance. So let's all calm down.

The beauty of American and even freer and more democratic nations is that freedom of speech is protected, and in some quarters even encouraged. Tate is an intelligent man challenging you to think. That is more than you get by only listening to people or media, whose views you already share.

I'm loving those Dave Tate videos. I'll likely stick with Rip's setup and mechanics for the Deadlift and I'm not going to be hitting up any highschoolers for their roids, but why live in a bubble? I want to know what's going on out there, someone wants to tell it to me straight? I'm all ears. Great question Sevan.
I don't take offence to someone pointing out the realities of drugs in sports. We pay professional atheletes to entertain us and it makes perfect sense to me that most of them might try whatever means to be payed more for longer. If you stuck it out through the video Tate goes on to explain that for CrossFit, there is no way to effectively use performance enhancing drugs, you'd have to take just about everything out there which would be impractical and insanely expensive: take away = don't waste your time/money on drugs for CrossFit. Thanks Dave!

Those of you who got your panties in a bunch about anyone even mentioning roids in the CrossFit church probably missed Dave's awesome and heartfelt discussion about not killing kids dreams to be great athletes.

I don't know why everyone's got their panties on too tight. Obviously, this is Tate's opinion and not CF's HQ's. Some of you speak about Steroids as if there is something morally wrong about them, especially #80, as if illegality and imorrality are mutually inclusive.

The guy was basically saying that taking Steroids is worthless unless taking them will get you another $15 million on your professional contract. As long as it pays, some people will do them, that's the simple truth and who can really blame them. Those who take it for Vanity are retards. It doesn't pay for crossfit athletes, at least not yet. Chill the F out. CF does a great job at getting opinions of professionals, even if you don't agree with them, as long as they are insightful, they do belong in this community.

Kameron- Nice post, well said.

Tate states that "you get one chance to do steriods..." that "unpatriotic" body builders are using the "good stuff" not leaving any for the olympic athletes... That's what I thought sucked about the video.

I get that maybe an athlete uses steriods to get to the next level but to clearly send the message that "you get one chance" is inaccurate. You get no chances. There are risks involved at every level both physically and criminally.

Those that do a "cycle" every now and then, you no longer count. Your times, your reps and your weight mean nothing. Yes, that is just my opinion.

As everyone wets their pants that something as horrible as Steroids was actually discussed on this forum, keep one thing in mind. The use of anabolic steroids is the reality for professional athletes. Tate is known for his no nonsense, tell it like it is personality, and I think he brings a breath of fresh air to the crossfit community. Everyone that is is so horribly offended by his video please stop watching all professional sports immediately, or you might be offended as well. The truth is that steroids are cheating, no doubt about it. Please don't assume that because we all do a workout posted on a website and eat a certain way that our community hasn't been infiltrated by drug use as well. No one is that naive. I think Tate did us all a service when he said (most likely from personal experience) that steroids are an ace card, and you only get to play it once. I believe the vast majority of users believe that steroids are a never ending escalator, and that higher levels of performance are reached with each drug cycle. Knowing that steroids are a one trick pony only reaffirms my desire not to touch the stuff. Give Tate a break, even old and broken he can still out lift all of his detractors. And by the way, as a law enforcement officer myself, I found it neither disrespectful or unlawful for Tate to speak him mind. This is still America after all, the man can say anything he wants, and so can you.....

Comment #154 - Posted by: JEF at July 28, 2009 6:21 AM

So, I haven't yet watched the clip, although I will after work. I have seen Bigger, Stronger, Faster, and I am mixed at why people are saying that it will make you re-think how you feel about steroid users

It is what it is, but if it wasnt "bad" or "immoral" why would the guy lie about it to his athletes. They look up to him as a role model while he tells them to work hard and succeed, while at the same time juicing on his own.

And those kids stick up for him so vehemently...

Wonder what they think of him now. What a lying hipocritical a-hole... If you want to juice then do it, but if it's not so bad, then why lie about it? You should advertise it... brag about it...

Right?

Why is everyone forming a lynch mob on this? CrossFit is not a professional sport, I don't care what you're doing with your high school letter jacket 20 years later. Scott Boras is not going to get the gear user a higher contract for faster times. There is not a CrossFit Hall of Fame that gear users can be excluded from. If someone wants to do a cycle, that's their business. Their times are not suddenly "cheater" times. No one cares. If you dislike it, don't use and don't compare. You are losing nothing by another person using gear. The only thing you have is your hurt high school star athlete pride you are dragging behind you.

Scaled to 115# (never done 135 before). CFWUx1, run 400m, lots of clean practice.

4 complete sets plus 4 reps in 5th minute. Actually fairly pleased with this--good, full squat cleans, most jerks felt strong, though swayed to the side at the top of some of them. 14 total clean and jerks.

Hated seeing this video. The vids have all been great, instructive, clean, informative, up until now. The opinions expressed in them (or the tenor debates, as there's not really a clear opinion that came out) seem antithetical to the crossfit ethos, and came out as sophomoric, profane dribble. Give me three minutes of Rippetoe in his awesome Kansan accent talking about squat technique or Sage teaching people how to snatch. It's good that we're talking about it--just wish it could've been done a little more high-minded.

The Dave Tate videos do not represent CrossFit very well at all. CrossFit is a professional sport, and the athletes competing in the Games now have sponsors. Not to mention over a thousand affiliate owners that are making a living from this sport. CrossFit has huge growth potential as a sporting event reaching a broad audience.

Steroids are illegal to posses, sell, or use without a prescription. In the video, Mr. Tate says it would be better for people who use steroids illegally for vain purposes to stop, so it would be easier for people who want to use them for more legit reason to obtain them illegally. This is absurd!

Comment #186 - Posted by: LW at July 28, 2009 8:15 AM

Dude, CrossFit is not a professional sport. Just because some people have made money doing it does not make it wholly professional. Is every company softball team a professional team just because a select few make money playing baseball? Is every AAU track athlete a professional just because some make money coaching runners? Calling yourself a professional athlete just because you compete in the same athletic events as some who make money do the same is just an inability to grasp your insignificance in life. THAT is absurd.

Many thanks to the guys who answered my questions about calluses. I worked through today's WOD using new skin. Hands felt ok, and didn't get too much worse. I'd say all around success.

Only did 5 minutes, plus 3 reps. Full squat-clean and jerks though. Definitely gunna go for more next time.

There seems to be some confusion, but everyone I've asked says when it does not specify the clean, it is by default a squat clean.

Comment #199 - Posted by: Tyler Johnson at July 28, 2009 9:13 AM

I don't post here often, and I haven't read all 189 comments... but here goes.

Jen, you're awesome! If I have one regret about the Games it would be not hanging with you and Lis.

Tate is an expert in his field, and says it like he sees it. All his videos are no-BS. So let's not get to critical on a guy for his honesty. From the get-go, Coach (and Tate) have said that he (Tate) is a powerlifter, and that's it. He was asked to come talk about powerlifting. I agree that posting a vid to the main page will give some credence to the content to the new CrossFitter, but we all should know by now that videos on the main page and some in the journal (Tate's) are two fold. One if for information, two is to make you think. I think Tate's videos have done that. There's no statement that says he speaks for CrossFit.

With a continuously running clock do one 95 pound Clean and Jerk the first minute, two 95 pound Clean and Jerks the second minute, three 95 pound Clean and Jerks the third minute… continuing as long as you are able.

Straight out of the Crossfit Level 1 Training Guide, page 10:

"Exercising with protocols known to elevate these hormones eerily mimics the hormonal changes sought in exogenous hormonal therapy (steriod use) with none of the deleterious effect."

Seems counterproductive to suggest that anabolics are the only "card". Personally, I prefer to play the card of training via methods which produce a natural neuroendocrine response.

Now, if only I hadn't made up DT yesterday...

question: is it a squat clean

the reason I am asking again is because for the most part, if it does not specify, we would assume that it's a full squat clean, but in this situation, would it be like a grace where you choose? what is the ultimate goal?

if the point is that we do full squat clean... then that's what I'll do
if the point is to get the maximum amount of rounds I can get doing whichever is more efficient for me, i'm doing power because I know I can get more rounds

As a lifetime drug-free athlete who medaled in 11 US Championships and competed in 2 Olympic Games as a hammer thrower, I am utterly baffled and disappointed by today’s .com video - and by its apparent endorsement by crossfit HQ.

While claiming to not advocate steroid use either way, Mr. Tate goes on to make it clear that he has no moral issue with athletes cheating with drugs - and any level. He simply cites that steroids serve as a one level boost - and (most disturbing of all) says that it is somehow un-American to take steroids because doing so would diminish some supposed supply to US Olympic athletes.

With this last remark, Mr. Tate manages to not only cheapen real, genuine accomplishments by clean athletes at all levels but also falsely stereotype US Olympians at large as cheaters. Moreover, such jaded remarks encourage a mentality of false accusation and excuse ("I could do that too if I was on drugs. . .") and, even worse, offers a rationalization for shortcut seekers to take steroids and cheat themselves. In short, when one spends an entire lifetime in the pursuit of an athletic goal by way of honorable, clean, hard work (whether as an Olympian or as a crossfitter), they are deserving of respect – not false accusations i.e., slander.

There is a lot that I have come to appreciate about crossfit – its creativity, universality, and community can be truly impressive. However, if the crossfit movement ever wants to be taken seriously in the athletic world, it needs to take a clear and consistent stand against steroids. Period. With one short clip, Mr. Tate manages to undo whatever gains have been made with the entire "Break Drugs Legally" campaign. What is worse, this damage is self-inflicted. Why would crossfit HQ purposefully highlight such remarks on the .com site – thereby planting an unnecessary (and hopefully unmerited) seed of doubt in the legitimacy and the incredible accomplishments of the crossfit program and its athletes?

In short, given the incredible effort it takes to reach these fitness levels and records times, this commentary is not just insulting to thousands of clean crossfitters (and Olympians) – its diminishes the respect that the entire crossfit movement could have in the athletic world.

Damn that was definitely harder than the pullups with continuous clock.

As rx'd, w/ squat cleans. 6 rounds + 2.

Unbroken through round 5. Round 6 was 3 and 3. Was shooting for 7 rounds, but considering it was taking me ~7 seconds to do 1 rep, I didn't have a chance. Barely got through 6 rounds. Almost quit then, waited 30 seconds to catch my breath. Decided to keep going. Only got 2 reps in the last half-minute.

Callouses are good (taped them up), but I tore a new one on my thumb from catching the cleans.

Until now I resented the right wing Rest Day Articles, but seeing the reaction to this video about steroids, controversy is definitely needed in this community more than ever.

That the irony in Tate's words flew miles over some peoples heads is just unbelievable. Some people take CrossFit way too serious.

It's like the JKD crowd, where the message of "adopt what is useful, reject was is useless" suddenly became "do exactly what Bruce Lee did". Let's hope CrossFit doesn't suffer the same close-minded development.

Worst crossfit video ever. Why would CF want to cast doubt on both the program and the accomplishments of it athletes by endorsing/highlighting such remarks? Mr. Tate slanders clean US Olympic athletes (some of the most often tested athltes in the world) and manages to undo the entire "Break Drugs Legally" effort from the CF Games - by clearly having no problem with cheating. Tragic.

So because the CrossFit Games are not a professional sport, it doesn't need to be a fair competition? College football players are not professionals, yet they are routinely tested for steroids (yes, I played and even my scrawny ass was tested several times). High school athletes are not professionals, but most schools have rules against steroid use (even if it is incredibly easy to get around them).

And yes, plenty of athletes at all levels do get away with using PED's. Plenty get caught, too, because they're BANNED. So yeah, those athletes are cheating, and just because "everyone else is doing it" doesn't mean it isn't breaking the rules. "It's only cheating if you don't get caught" is a horsecrap line of thinking, in my opinion. That's like saying Alex Rodriguez wasn't cheating until three months ago, when he finally got caught.

With the popularity of CF on the rise (I think I read in the Sporting News article they were shooting for coverage on ESPN in 3-5 years or something like that), it seems like they are in a unique position to take a HARD stance against PED's early to prevent the widespread problems we see in all sorts of other sports.

But that's just my opinion, and again, I'm not saying people who use are bad people or immoral. They just shouldn't be using to get an unfair edge in an actual competition, like the CF Games.

Just a comment on the steroid comments, I agree when abused they are a major risk, but when taken in the lowest dose that will help, and under the guidance of a Doctor or medical professional they can have amazing positive effects...I am not endorsing to go out and buy illegal drugs...
But when I get to 40+ I will be having a sit down with my Doc.

Haven't done full squat cleans in a while, so the first time i started this i actually fell backwards on the second minute. Kind of made me laugh to myself a bit and just started it over.
Wasn't really a problem of gassing once i got going, but more popping back up from the bottom. Once i'm down there it goes up really slow till i get to about quarter squat position where i fly up. Really need to fix that somehow. Of course muscle fatigue played it's fair role as well.

#103 - I don't think you can say that the videos posted here are not influential on the CrossFit base. Do you recall when the announcement was posted that steroid testing would be held at the games? 95% of the responses were along the lines of "This is great. I'm so glad HQ is taking a stance against this and keeping the playing field level."

Now today, I'd say almost half the responses on here are either saying "who cares if people take steroids" or "steroids aren't detrimental to your health so I don't see what the big deal is." Again, I think it's perfectly fine for Tate to have his views, but at least in the way the preview video is presented, it does NOT seem that CF is taking a hard stance against steroids. Plenty of people follow the main site workouts regardless of how strange or crazy they look (think inverted burpees or virtual shoveling), so I think if CF were to be firm with an anti-doping stance, the majority of the community would by into that.

Then again, maybe they don't want to take that type of stance, and that's fine - I personally just wish they would. That's just my opinion. For me, it's really about the competition. I love competition (professional or otherwise) and I like to see it fair.

One other thing - I still don't like the argument that it's somehow fine for professional athletes to dope because it's their livelihood at stake. By doing something illegal (banned by the sport), they're costing the livelihood of those who compete by the rules. That's what's unfair.

I don't think I need to read the article. What is there to be open-minded about? Self-prescribed steroid use is wrong. Make your own HGH by working out...hard and fast...then eat right and sleep. Isn't that what CrossFit is about? I am new here. I did, however, come across this quote just this morning: "He who loves his body more than dominion over the empire, can be given custody of the empire."

Thanks for the thought-provoking and entertaining excerpt from the CrossFit Journal today. It's wonderful to watch the evolution of the Journal and the Editor's willingness to include voices and opinions that reside outside the mainstream of CrossFit philosophy. Tate is well-informed, intelligent, articulate, ironic and profane - the very best sort of dinner guest.

I have a scab on my collar bone from "DT" the other night, I taped it up but it didn't help. Each time I caught the clean it landed on the scab, there was blood all over the bar, and it just simply threw me off. I know...suck it up buttercup. Next time!

did grace instead of this WOD so if I epically failed, I'd still have done 30 reps of clean and jerks. It went quite well, I did salvos of 5 reps. When it came time to do reps 21-25, "you make me wanna shout" came on and I totally went crazy, doing two rapid series of 5 reps. I think that in my crazy streak, I bounced the weight too much off the ground a couple times (I did lower it somewhat slowly to the ground but I felt like there was a moderate rebound, at most would bring the weight to mid shin if that high). Now WAAAAAIT a minute.... SHOUT! put your hands up and SHOUT! beautifu <3 crssfit

I think everyone's who's criticizing the video should watch the one in the journal which provides much more context behind his feelings towards steroids. The video is awesome and the guy offers some great insight. I can see how easily people would be misled by watching the short one on the main site.

Comment #391 - Posted by: rodrigo Iglesias at July 28, 2009 4:50 PM

With a continuously running clock do one 135 pound Clean and Jerk the first minute, two 135 pound Clean and Jerks the second minute, three 135 pound Clean and Jerks the third minute... continuing as long as you are able.

Use as many sets each minute as needed.

(as prescribed)

4 rounds + 3 clean-and-jerks

Comment #392 - Posted by: Goat 33/M/192/5'-11" at July 28, 2009 4:50 PM

Anyone who thinks Tate was saying we should all take steroids wasn't paying attention.

He really was saying that yes, 'roids will, when used properly, provide a small edge. For those in high school, college, amateur anything, or with asthetic goals, it's a bad idea, as there is a price and the benefit will not be enough to outweigh it (it's not gonna make a mediocre high-school kid into a pro).

For those who ARE at the pro-level, the price might be worth it, or it might not be. No matter what, if you can't get to the pro level naturally, it's pointless.

Anyone who thinks that "good old fashioned hard work and clean diet" can overcome good old fashioned hard work, clean diet, AND steriods is simply wrong (in many sports, anyway). The top-level guys on 'roids didn't get there by injecting themselves while sitting on the couch eating pizza... they did it by injecting themselves while working their ass off and eating a ton of high-quality food.

Is it cheating? well, if you pass the drug screen (and YES, you can pass the screen while taking roids if you're smart) then arguably no.

If you ignore arbitrary rules for a minute, roids aren't "cheating" any more than creatine, caffeine, sports drinks, "goo", protein shakes, ect. For those who claim it's only available to rich people with expensive docs, the same can be said of good trainers, facilities, supplements, and even clean, natural foods... or for that matter, the ability to not have a normal job, allowing 6 hours of training per day.

Not supporting steroid use, just being objective and realistic.

Let me take a second to call out Jen Conlin (the buff chick in the picture). For two months, I had the greatest pleasure training under her at Potomac CrossFit in Virginia. Her attitude is the best and has a coaching style that allows beginners to keep from getting discouraged while making sure intermediate/advanced CrossFitters are keeping in line with form. In the A.M. classes, she had the energy to get the athletes revved up... and it stayed that way until you left!

Jen Conlin is one of the best CrossFit trainers I've ever met and am so damn glad I had the privilege of training under. I hope the folks at CrossFit Watertown know how freaking lucky they are to have such a qualified and motivated instructor.

Hope we meet up again, Jen! Keep up the awesome work!

Cookie- I am interested in the 30 Day Paleo *but* I think I will watch from afar. I'm about 85-90% Paleo right now and I think any more restriction is gonna resemble old habits and that wont be good. I keep poring over old photos where I am thin, at times very thin, and can't help but wish I looked that way again. I would love to be lean again but I have to avoid any gimmicky road map.

I have to let my body guide me, not some piece of paper. I have been craving oatmeal (which is a good sign, I mean, I could be craving chocolate chips), so that's breakfast tomorrow :)

New parent looking for a new plan to return to exercise. I heard about this site over the weekend and couldn't resist starting today. The CFWU was more strenuous than anything I've done for the past year! The form on the full squat clean really threw me off - I dropped the bar at some point trying to do continuous reps! Dreading and excited about the run tomorrow and quickly improving my efforts.

Went to the gym. Got finished around 7:30 P.M. Saw old B-Boy friends from high school and we were breakin at the gym and I had to leave at 10:30 P.M. cause of work. Went to the truck and the car wouldn't start and my dad refused to pick me up so I got a ride home. End of a real long frat story that I don't think anybody wants to read. I went to high school with users and at the time was accused of using them because I went from 155 when I graduated to 188 over graduating summer with hard lifting twice a day and eating 3,000 calories every 24 hours. I outperformed these young men in the gym (wannabe bodybuilders), and simple jealousy earned me the label.

My opinion regarding steroids is that they are a substitute for hard work, they encourage laziness, and are a house built on sand for men and women with innate character deficiencies who are not passionate, but narcissistic, self centered, and ego driven. You can justify substance abuse and use in any form by rationalizing like an alcoholic, but in the end, it's your integrity and character you are rationalizing away.

If anyone finds this offensive, well, I apologize in advance for stating my opinion. That's all it really is anyway...

Comment #549 - Posted by: lclark at July 29, 2009 7:36 AM

@ anybody

Okay, I am confused on how some people go so fast.

The clean and jerk from what I understand is Start with the bar on the ground

then the clean (get the bar to shoulders) then with a full squat!

then the jerk. leg extended back, full extension on arms

then bar all the way back to the floor, reset proper position for the next one.

The fastest I did one was 8 seconds and change.

Is this right?

Comment #550 - Posted by: J at July 29, 2009 7:38 AM

you got it pretty much right,to set up right and do them with good form takes time .

Comment #551 - Posted by: Pedro Barrera,Scotland at July 29, 2009 8:01 AM

J, #555

8 seconds is a little slow. this is an explosive movement for the clean after you deadlift the weight to about mid thigh, then it is an explosive movement to get it overhead. should take at most about 5 seconds. but you also have to factor in when you start getting tired, resting between movements...

full squat clean and split jerks

After round 6 started doing power cleans and push press and got in another 3 rounds

I don't see how people are doing 8+ rounds of true squat cleans and jerks. I believe there are some really fit people on here but the actual movements themselves take time. I did all of mine unbroken and still reached time on round six. However, switching to power cleans (which I imagine many people did) allowed me to easily get up to 9 rounds...

So not sure if it was as Rxd.

I did power cleans to rack at shoulder, then push press to verticle. I didn't see the point of squating the weight again unless I needed to drop and pop with the hips to get it above my head. Anyway a better effort than last time.

Alright well after ready some comments I felt some points needed to be made. First off not all steroids are illegal. Saying that is completely asinine. Also, illegal steroids are actually better to use than legal ones because there is more information on them. How much studying do you think they did before it became illegal? Second, you can take steroids intelligently to improve your training for the better and many athletes do. Olympic lifters use them, hell even Lance armstrong used steroids (which were not for his cancer). No you don't die at 50 or 60. How would having as much testosterone when you're 60 as when you're 20 cause a premature death?

STEROIDS BOTTOM LINE: using steroids to compete, when prohibited, is cheating. If a person believes otherwise then logic would say all cheating that results in victory is also acceptable, as long as one does not get caught . Cross that line and one could argue corking a bat is acceptable in the MLB or successfully manipulation of a Crossfit competition, by breaking the rules, is also acceptable.

Scaled to 115# and only got thru rd 4 (using squat C&J). Took an extra minute rest then did rd 5 (using power C&J). Though maybe I didn't warm up properly and stopped to rest before doing it all over again. On second attempt, only got thru 3 reps in rd 4. Not sure why this worked me so badly, but I look forward to doing it again.
