Ask and you shall recieve....can't even remember how many people were asking for some heavy DL's!

Might do this and then make up Nancy after...I can't really PR on this anyways since i have no more room on the bar :(

hey what is the census on wrist straps with deadlifts? i cant go MUCH heavier with them, so should i or should i go as heavy as i can without them to build up my grip? thanks in advance

Comment #9 - Posted by: Trevor Brown at July 20, 2009 8:02 PM

Knew this come up as soon as simulated the DL Ladder WOD from the Games after the 5K yesterday.

Comment #10 - Posted by: Esteban - CrossFit Nasti at July 20, 2009 8:05 PM

Gonna hit this hard and then go nuts on another WOD just so when I check for the WOD tomorrow, I can step out into the fresh air and begin my day with sore hamstrings and a stomach full of regret.
Gotta love it....

Comment #11 - Posted by: Mike In Japan at July 20, 2009 8:05 PM

Hell yes! I can make up the 5k after. Thanks coach!

#6 Eric, if it is wrong to tell another man you are jealous of his DL max, I do not want to be right. Get some plates and crank up the badass, dude!

Comment #12 - Posted by: Joe C.FED at July 20, 2009 8:06 PM

I think i just came up with an idea to get more weight on the bar! I will test it tomorrow. Hooray!! :D

#11 Trevor Brown-
I think the main answer you'll get here is to not use wraps, since you can't lift what you can't hold on to (which is my personal philosophy as well). However I know there are a few people that do use them at their own discretion. Overall, it's your workout and your decision. But coming from me, use those hands and don't rely on the straps!

Comment #13 - Posted by: Eric Gohl 22/5'10/162 at July 20, 2009 8:06 PM

Fairly new to Crossfit but LOVING IT!!

Can someone tell me what the 1-1-1-1-1-1-1 reps means? How many rounds &/or reps does this indicate?

Comment #14 - Posted by: Maverick99 at July 20, 2009 8:07 PM

Maverick:

Working up to a 1RM, 7 single lifts with 3-5 mins rest in between.

#15 Eric

thanks eric, ill squeeze tight and see what i can do!!!

Comment #16 - Posted by: Trevor Brown at July 20, 2009 8:13 PM

Comment #17 - Posted by: Maverick99 at July 20, 2009 8:14 PM

#16 Maverick99
1-1-1-1-1-1-1 means max weight 1 time, rest, then repeat seven times. At the games the athletes were given 30 secs to rest. You can do longer or shorter. What ever tickles your fancy.

Comment #18 - Posted by: Kell_e at July 20, 2009 8:15 PM

1st day going back to XFit in 6 months...good thing the pain will start with my fav WOD instead of "Nancy" which was my first ever Welcome to Xfit!

last time i did this i hurt my back. not actually doing the lift, but me being a dummy getting a loaded bar to the ground. hopefully after 3 weeks of recovery i can do this right.

Comment #20 Franiel - Very impressive, 405!

I think we all were hoping for heavy DLs after a run. I might do it game style every 30 seconds. Or not.

That picture is making me drool. I want to go climbing in Greece!

Comment #26 - Posted by: Corey Bibolet 39/M/159\1/5'8" at July 20, 2009 8:38 PM

Called it! I know, we all saw it coming...

Time to rig up the bar with kettlebells, maybe duct tape some dumbells on there, I don't know but I'll figure it out.

Get it FRAT!

Comment #27 - Posted by: Playoff Beard at July 20, 2009 8:40 PM

Nice video...it's about time we see some rowing where the sport really should take place--on the water :)

Comment #28 - Posted by: NeverSayCan't at July 20, 2009 8:45 PM

I know I can get 405. Last time I would of had it but I was wearing stupid gloves that made my hands slip. I'm also going to try the hook grip. Some people told me it helps you lift more on the DL but well see. Playoff Beard saw me lift before. I'll remember "BIG CHEST" PB!

Comment #29 - Posted by: Daniel Krull AKA "Franiel" at July 20, 2009 8:56 PM

Playoff Beard-
My idea was to put the tiny metal plates inside some plastic shopping bags and thread the handles through to the inside of the bar and wrap them around so it doesn't hang to the floor. That way you won't have a sudden increase in weight once lift off happens. Then again, i guess it depends on how much you're pulling. Obviously can't load up bumpers in there :)

Franiel-
405? I'm jealous and impressed. My goal is 400#, but my PR thus far is only 380#. Looks like i'm playing catch up!

Comment #30 - Posted by: Eric Gohl 22/5'10/162 at July 20, 2009 9:02 PM

I would never insinuate to have programming abilities that match that of Coach, but regarding those of you who want to do a Crossfit Games 2009 Event1&2 simulation WOD:

If I had 2 healthy shoulders, I would run the nastiest 5 km I could find, have it end at my gym, and immediately start a DL ladder, 1 set every 3 minutes, increasing weight on each set: 135/10-185/9-225/8-275/7-315/6-365/5-405/4-455/3-495/2-515/1-525/1-535/1. Scale according to ability level and have fun!

Once again: my programming is to be done at your own risk!!!

Comment #31 - Posted by: Herm at July 20, 2009 9:07 PM

My PR is 385... I've hit it numerous of times. I'm too stubborn to go 395 because I want the 4 plates! I want it soooo badly! This is going to be the day!

Haven't done any Power lately - wonder if we are gonna...and then I say two kids deadlifting in the corner and I thought AHA!!! I bet Coach decrees DEADLIFTS - I mean really, what else comes after a run?

FYI, there is a great video on you tube re: deadlift.
Type in: crossfit deadlift, good form example and a CF coach telling how great the DL is for your body.
After this week of Nancy, 50/50 and 5k- I am liking my first week of crossfit.
I love this sh*t!

I made up the 5k run this morning. I got up early to do it. I really dislike running, almost as much as I dislike getting up early.

Run 5 K
30:56

I really don't know my pace at this distance. I took it a little too slowly on the outbound trip, and couldn't quite make it up on the return. With better pacing, this could have been below 30 minutes, and a P.R.

Tonight I will deadlift. Hopefully I will be able to get out of bed tomorrow morning.

What weight do you think you should start the first DL, 80% max and go up from there?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

#49 I warm up with a few beers, but that's just me.....

Ok, honestly, I warm up with......deadlifts. No sense in wasting time....I like to get "in the groove" and get my CNS primed for that specific movement pattern.

Today I did;
135 X 1
185 X 1
225 X 1
275 X 1
315 X 1
365 X 1
EASY 405 x 1

Averaged about 2min between sets but didn't know about any routine where you only rest 30sec btwn sets, which I will do FROM NOW ON.....I've pulled over 600 @ 205-210lbs in the past, so looking forward to getting back up the the callous-tearing-o-ring-blowing weights again!

Franiel, the hook grip works pretty well for my deadlifts but it's gonna hurt at 405#. Nothing ever broke on me, though, so grin and bear it.

Eric Gohl, I found some nice metal plates on craigslist.com pretty cheaply. They take up less space on the bar, so I use bumpers to get the height right and add in the metal ones for the real weight.

Pony, do you take a pillow to sit on at work on days like this?

Jeff Glassman and I joked around about that at the games (at least, I think he was joking), although credit for first mention of the idea goes to Eric Gohl (ERIC GOHL'S A BEAST!).

I'm just worried that a rest day discussion with the participants in striking distance would soon turn to scuffling in the dirt.

DL's have sucked for me lately, but felt good about doing them this am. Did a ton of warmups: rows, pushups, situps, dips, squats...good active stretching. Did a lot of warmups too, since it's been a while. 95x10, 135x8, 225x3.

Man in Black: All right. Where is the poison? The battle of wits has begun. It ends when you decide and we both drink, and find out who is right... and who is dead.
Vizzini: But it's so simple. All I have to do is divine from what I know of you: are you the sort of man who would put the poison into his own goblet or his enemy's? Now, a clever man would put the poison into his own goblet, because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. But you must have known I was not a great fool, you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me.
Man in Black: You've made your decision then?
Vizzini: Not remotely. Because iocane comes from Australia, as everyone knows, and Australia is entirely peopled with criminals, and criminals are used to having people not trust them, as you are not trusted by me, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you.
Man in Black: Truly, you have a dizzying intellect.
Vizzini: Wait til I get going! Now, where was I?
Man in Black: Australia.
Vizzini: Yes, Australia. And you must have suspected I would have known the powder's origin, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me.
Man in Black: You're just stalling now.
Vizzini: You'd like to think that, wouldn't you? You've beaten my giant, which means you're exceptionally strong, so you could've put the poison in your own goblet, trusting on your strength to save you, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. But, you've also bested my Spaniard, which means you must have studied, and in studying you must have learned that man is mortal, so you would have put the poison as far from yourself as possible, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me.
Man in Black: You're trying to trick me into giving away something. It won't work.
Vizzini: IT HAS WORKED! YOU'VE GIVEN EVERYTHING AWAY! I KNOW WHERE THE POISON IS!
Man in Black: Then make your choice.
Vizzini: I will, and I choose - What in the world can that be?
Vizzini: [Vizzini gestures up and away from the table. Roberts looks. Vizzini swaps the goblets]
Man in Black: What? Where? I don't see anything.
Vizzini: Well, I- I could have sworn I saw something. No matter.First, let's drink. Me from my glass, and you from yours.
Man in Black, Vizzini: [they drink ]
Man in Black: You guessed wrong.
Vizzini: You only think I guessed wrong! That's what's so funny! I switched glasses when your back was turned! Ha ha! You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well-known is this: never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha...
Vizzini: [Vizzini stops suddenly, and falls dead to the right]
Buttercup: And to think, all that time it was your cup that was poisoned.
Man in Black: They were both poisoned. I spent the last few years building up an immunity to iocane powder.

was able to get 220 one time with correct form and lower the bar down without dropping it, but as I continued to try any higher or do 220 the second time, my grip failed. I need to get some poweder... my hands slip. I also need to work on keeping a stronger grip.

#59 Melissa: I do not tink it means what u tink it means.

#79 Chris, hang in there and keep up the hard work, it'll pay off. It takes time and lots of practice to get your strength (having started CF in 2006, I feel like I am finally starting to get there - at first you don't even know what you don't know). Rippetoe's Starting Strength DVD has some great footage on the DL technique and there is lots of great DL stuff in The CF Journal. Check it out and keep up the practice...

I see where the male/female competitive spirit comes in when the women are owning a 355 lb deadlift that I couldnt even budge. :P

Q1: I noticed all the videos are demonstrating overhand grip, any thoughts on alternating grip?

Q2: What's supposed to happen if I fail on one of the seven lifts? Count it as 0 as I did, or try a different weight?

Q3: I'm a huge fan of crossfit, but when it comes to these heavy lift days, it's really hard to imagine how 7 lifts is enough... somebody please convince me!

Thanks in advance!

A1: My thoughts come from Rip's Starting Strength. Use overhand grip on the warmups, until you get to a weight where you have to go to alternating, and your grip will get stronger faster.

A2: That's what I do.

A3: Give it a try for a while and see how it works for you. Personally, I wouldn't want to do more than a warmup progression and seven max deadlifts in one session.

Goat - I did think about using a hook grip, but I thought I might break my thumb.

OK I have been shying off heavy DLs for a while after my bout with Sciatica. I have been seen an ART Chiropractor and that has helped. I purchased the Trigger Point products at the game and it has made me feel even better. I still didn't push it too much today just because I don't want to go too far too fast. I know I have a 400# DL in me. But it might not come out for a few months.

I've used it up into the high 300's, and it feels like my thumbs are going to have a permanent depression in them. However, no actual damage. I don't use it any longer because I want to maximize my grip strength for grappling. I can hold onto 420# with an alternating grip, without chalk (deadlifting in my kitchen, chalk dust tastes bad), long enough to lock it out, but I gotta drop the weight afterwards.

Should be happier with the pr but I truly thought I could break the 300lbs barrier. But, then i shot myself in the foot. Instead of following the pattern that had got me there of changing weight taking a few moments to get ready and going I tried to make everything too perfect for my landmark lift. So, I spent time trying to find the perfect song on my Ipod and spent way too much time in my crouch to the point i had to stand up once. All this time while i was telling myself "you can do it" doubt was sneaking in. Rookie mistakes and I should know better.

Behind this cycle. Took an extra rest day Sunday; annual fitness test yesterday. Never done the Filty 50's, so had to give it a shot today -- 34 min.

Couldn't get full rom on all K2E; used 12# for wall ball shots (heaviest available). Otherwise as rx'd.

That's a lot of burpees, especially so late in the workout.

OOOOoohh, 435 felt so good, but I couldn't even budge 450. From Fezzick to Vizzini in one lift!

Warmup: Burgener warmup, light power clean and jerk, a few light deads, then go.

Cash out: 3 rounds handstand and hold, L-sit and hold. "Quiet running" drill on treadmill (trying to run quietly while increasing speed), wearing the chuck taylors. Felt good!

My favorite scene in Joe vs. The Volcano is the scene where he is buying luggage, and views the steamer trunks with a look of wonder on his face. It stands out for me, because I would feel that same sense of wonder. I can't walk through the luggage area of a department store without checking out the goods, and imagining the places I would visit and the sights I would see while making use of that luggage.

I made big strength gains using the novice program laid out in Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength, but this was at the cost of my metcon (what little I have). In about eight weeks I put 65 lbs. on my 1RM squat, for instance.

Lately I have been considering adding more work in on the main site strength days. My thought would be that when (as an example) a 7x1 max lift day came up I could do one day of Rip's program (3x5 squat, 3x5 press, 1x5 deadlift; -OR- 3x5 squat, 3x5 bench, 5x3 power clean). Just something I've been thinking about. It might actually be too much work, and make adequate recovery impossible.

Strong Lil Pony-
Congrats on the PR! Not so much congrats on the shot...i hate needles. Luckily it didn't seem to hinder you whatsoever :)

Corey Bibolet-
Congrats on your PR too! I'm almost positive you could get a 400+ DL. I'd doubt you ever having grip issues with your climbing background. Which I am highly jealous of by the way.

Cookie-
Kill that 50 today! And grab your mighty lip gloss and tall socks for some DL ownage tomorrow!

Herm-
I wish i had a nasty 5k run around here, but Michigan doesn't bless (or curse) me with those kind of fun options :(

Franiel-
I tied your previous PR, so you have to get 405 now. It's the law.

Goat-
I've got some metal plates but the rings are too small. I will now be tying them on with plastic bags. I died when i read "ERIC GOHL'S A BEAST!!" hahaha.

Playoff Beard-
Hope your rig works as well as mine if not better!

I do believe that covers everyyyybody!

Really wanted a PR today, no luck. Spent the morning cleaning up around here. Nasty hail storm last night, lots of damage to the house and landscaping.

is it just me or do the dead lift numbers always seem really high compaired to the rest of the lifts. I mean on squat days I see a lot of 270# but then on dl days its like everyone is up to 400#. I know for me I squat right about the same as I dead lift. I know the general rule is that most trained lifters squat like 80% of their DL but it seems really elevated on here.

Comment #278 - Posted by: jshep at July 21, 2009 5:13 PM

Feeling tired today, I am now convinced I need a rest cycle.
220 for all 7 sets, same as last time. Was able to pull 225 once, but I believe my last CFT I pulled 230.
Yesterday's Filthy Fifty was the same or slightly longer than last time, though I used fewer subs.

It's time to rest, my body has spoken, Crossfit friends have spoken, a freakin' athletic trainer has spoken.
I'll holla at everybody when I start back, maybe Saturday?
God Bless...

Did the Games DL Ladder after the 5K yesterday, so went with some fun stuff:

1. Weighted PU, 3-3-3-1-1-1 @ 53-70-79-90-90-90

2. 30:00 rest, then: 5 rounds, 3:00 rest in between, of 3 weighted PUs @ 53 and 10 slam balls at 23 lbs. Focused on explosiveness.

3. Assorted carries and tire flips, including 2 x 25, 60, and 100 lb. bags, 2 x 100 lb. farmer's walks, and our heaviest tire (roughly 350 lbs.). Carried/sprinted/flipped each roughly 30m, starting with the lightest, then returned everything in reverse order. Finished in 6:20.

I guess it depends on what you train on. I don't deadlift, but I clean and jerk so I do clean pulls. I do squat a lot, sometimes 4 days a week, which are usually heavy doubles or heavy singles.

Today I did my first deadlifts in I don't know how long and maxed out at 352. My back squat however is 341 a** to the ground. Kind of embarrasing I quess with only a 5 kilo difference.

So, I quess it depends on what you train on and most people probably train on what they are good at.

At your estimate of 80% that would actually have me dl'ing 430 so it looks like I got to get to work.

My deadlift max went up 30 lbs since June 29. I looked back thru my notes, and thought for sure that since I wasnt "weight" training, that some of my lifts would go down. Not to mention that I am 10 lbs lighter than I was on the 29th as well. Crossfit rocks!!!!

364-385-395-400(f)-400-402.5-395(f)

Second workout of the day. Ugh.

After stopping S.S., my max deadlift was 420#. The last CrossFit Total I did, deadlift was 410#. I lost some strength. Note to those just starting CrossFit: when you skip or half-ass 2/3 of your workouts, then try to make it up by over-doing the remaining 1/3, you don't get better, you get worse. Don't be dumb. Don't be like Goat.

My calfs, hamstrings, and glutes started out sore from doing the Dirty Thirty-Fives yesterday and the 5k run today. I told Pony that I could lock out anything I could get off the floor, and where do I have trouble? In the lockout. Figures.

Had an MRI done on my lower back Saturday and got the results today. The good news: No disc problems. The bad news: Spondylolisthesis. This is a condition in which my L5 vertebra is slipping forward over my S1 and beneath my L4 vertebra. It is probably congenital. The condition is one that would definitely cause lower back problems in certain situations. I had problems with my lower back (pinched nerves, numbness and shooting pains in my legs) during football season my junior year in high school. The same symptoms came back a few months ago after I started to work strength-bias training into my regimen. I am thinking that the 420 lb deadlifts and the 305 lb back squats caused this problem to flare up again. Long runs and standing in one place for an extended period of time are also problematic. So I am backing off the heavy deadlifts and back squats for a while. I have also begun to substitute rowing for long runs. I am thankful that wrestling, judo and jiu jitsu do not aggravate my lower back.

That said, I did not do the deadlift wod today. This is what I did instead:

Played judo for 1.5 hours including 1.0 hours of drills and 0.5 hours of roll time (3 rounds including 6 minutes of work followed by 3 minutes of rest). Played pretty well. Felt strong; cardio was good.

Immediately after judo I did the following:
Selective Stretching
Overhead Squats, 10 reps, 15/35/65/87/97(PR)
BurgenerWUx2
Snatch Drills, 15/45/67

For metabolic conditioning I started off with Isabel using 65 lbs but with a full squat snatch each rep:
Snatches, 65 lbs, Down to D-Ball, 30 reps (10/10/5/5), 5:25

I finished off by working on my muscle up progressions:
Muscle Up Progressions, From Toes with Extended Arms, Rings at 69", 30 reps (10-5-5-5-5), 6:13

Finally, I cooled down with some selective stretching for my lower back.

My kids trained with me tonight. They played judo and did the following 10 rep sets of overhead squats:

Luke (m/13/125)
Overhead Squats, 10 reps, PVC/15/35/45/65(PR)

Brittany (f/11/65)
Overhead Squats, 10 reps, PVC/PVC/15/15

Mama watched as we trained. Way to go, guys - keep up the good work!

Something that helps me with my deads is looking where i get stuck at....if i can't "break" the weight off the ground (bottom of lift) then i work on doing speed lifts..8 sets of 2 reps for 50% of my max while standing on a 4 to 6 inch box==60 seconds of rest between sets........
If I get stuck at the top where I cant lock out the weight then I do rack pulls from my knees with 120% of my max...2 sets of 4 to 6 reps..

So this is my third week on CrossFit, I am, well, obese I guess, but doing these exercises (usually modified) has really helped me get back into working out and losing weight. My firefighter brother-in-law told me about CrossFit and I finally started!

I did the 5k on an elliptical in 44:24, and tonight for my first dead lifts ever I did:

135

225

I was also pissed that I could only do 15 minute miles in the 5k so I finished tonight off with a 12:10 mile, shooting for 12 flat. Thanks everyone for the motivation!

***FRAT***

I never mention this but the way how I prepare myself to the PR is I do 1 rep of 135, 1 rep of 225, 1 rep of 315... then I go for it.

In the past, I went and did the PR (385) 1st then go for the 405 and failed. This time I just went straight into the 405.

When I hit the 315... I got a HUGE ADRENALINE RUSH!!! (man I love the adrenaline rushes...)

I grabbed one of my friends to tape me, got ready for it, felt my left hamstring pull a lil during the pull but didn't care... and then BAM!!! Got it! I was soooo amped after I got it! I added the video on my facebook!

I tried it again but no budge so I just ditched it and just went for the posted reps... taking my time and making sure I had a good rest before the next go. Man I love CF!

"PROPS TO THA FRAT!!!"

The people who do the C&J and Snatch mostly train at night, don't think he has the guts to come in when we are all there but is hiding behind the posters that he has put up. Going to try and see him today.

My daughter who is 8 said "Mum if they say it is not safe ask how may accidents there have been?
Out of the mouths of babes. If she can see that, how can a group of grown men not!

Started out heavier (at former PR) today and felt good. But, when I went for 335, I couldn't extend. Then I couldn't get 315 again, so I dropped. I think I may need to look at my form and how low I drop my backside before I thrust upward. Also a note, I ran my 5k about 1.5 hours before...

First time doing DLs in my life:

(m/39/6'4"/238) - lost a couple of pounds this week!

185-205-225-255(f)-235-245-255-265-275-285-300

I did a few reps with 135# as a warm-up and may have started low for a max, but I needed to work on form. I failed on 255# the first time because I backed out with my butt instead of bursting up with my legs. I had grip problems at 265#, so I switched to an over/under grip and used work-out gloves for the last three lifts. I RAN OUT OF WEIGHTS and couldn't go any higher, so it's time for me to buy some more iron and go higher next time.

first dead lifts ever - started with 45 lb. bar - and worked up to 120 lbs. - might sound weak, but i must admit, my form looks good :) palms are starting to callus ... now all i need are the dead-lifting tibia lines, ha.

Worked on kipping pull-up progressions afterwards.

coupled a hilly, dirty, overgrown 3k trail run with deadlifts. Our way of "replicating" the first 2 CF Games workouts. Fun to copy the RX of the games! With a great result- both of us PR'd on the deadlifts!

W/U sets of 4,3,3,2,2 reps of 50,60,70,80,90KG

then as Rx'd in KG:
100/110/120/125/130/135pr/137pr*
*didn't weigh myself.. but VERY close to 2xBW!
Decided NOT to go for it today- but will do it next time around!

i have a tip to everyone that mentioned grip problems. most crossfitters already know this but get some chalk. its unbelievable the difference between lifting a bar with some chalk on it and lifting a bar without. when i first grabbed some chalk it honestly bumped up my deadlift max 40 pounds instantly. im not saying it will instantly raise yours that much but it will make a significant difference and you will love it.

Used a stone, so...
1. stone
2. same stone
3. this one stone
4. again this stone
5. stone stone stone
6. stoooooooooooooone
7. and again the one and only deadlift-stone

because of lack of weight i do more reps, but nevertheless i only could do between one and three reps.
