Comment #5 - Posted by: Kevin Wood - CrossFit Moncton (28/6'3/175#) at June 26, 2009 5:53 PM

Is it a better idea to do the one arm DL's in front of the body, or suitcase style?

I'm having trouble deciding

Comment #6 - Posted by: tomgreynolds at June 26, 2009 5:54 PM

Me and my wife are new to this but we are addicted!! my question is how is a one handed push press performed?? do you place one end of the barbell on the ground and push the other or do you hold the bar in the middle??? same with the deadlift?? do you hold it out front in the middle or set one side down??

Comment #7 - Posted by: OQ at June 26, 2009 5:56 PM

looks like suitcase was the standard in 2003. They have a picture and description on July 17th, 2003.

Comment #8 - Posted by: #42MARQ - CrossFit Bucks at June 26, 2009 5:58 PM

thanks #14, appreciate the guidance.

OQ, on both of these lifts you would hold the barbell in the middle and try to balance it with your grip as opposed to anchoring one end and pressing the other.

Comment #9 - Posted by: tomgreynolds at June 26, 2009 6:00 PM

Best advice is go to the "compare to 030716" hyperlink and read the (very few) comments posted there for an idea on how to tackle this wod.

From the early "black box" days I presume....?

Comment #10 - Posted by: Ronnieboy at June 26, 2009 6:01 PM

no problem...also, reading the comments from 2003 (July 16th and 17th) will help. Less than 20 comments per day back then.

Comment #11 - Posted by: #42MARQ - CrossFit Bucks at June 26, 2009 6:04 PM

Does anybody know where to find a video showing how to do the one-arm stuff correctly?

Comment #12 - Posted by: Peter at June 26, 2009 6:05 PM

Is the push press done on the side(by the ear) or in the front(by the chest)?

Thanks

Comment #19 - Posted by: franiel at June 26, 2009 6:21 PM

At the bottom it says to go heavy does that mean were suppose to do whatever weight we think we can do? Or just the bar?

Comment #20 - Posted by: Lance at June 26, 2009 6:23 PM

It looks like this WOD is going to target the stabilizer muscle groups...should be tackling this one in about an hour.

Hey guys!

Wow this is totally awesome I'm baffled by this workout it truly is bizarre!

I'm looking at the description for the push-jerk from 030720 and guessing that the push-press should be similar. I notice in the pictures that the he has the bar tilted toward the ground at the back(probably to make balancing it easier). To do that I'm guessing he holds the bar not exactly in the middle but a little bit towards the front. Are we supposed to do that?

This one ROCKED! Running WOD's are my nemesis, and this one was no exception.....DAMN I'm slow! The unique lifts made the whole thing fun as hell, though. Surprised at how quickly I adapted to the 1 Arm DL, and how imbalanced I am strong side/weak side.

As Rx'd in 31:15

Comment #55 - Posted by: Martin B at June 27, 2009 12:47 AM

Let's get the easy stuff out of the way

800m = half a mile. Got that? Cool!

One handed deadlift - start with the bar beside you facing fore and aft. Grab it in the middle - deadlift working to keep hips and shoulders square. For further detail google suitcase deadlift.

One handed push press - grab bar in centre, rest bar on shoulder as near to centre as you can manage. Lift elbow high so weight sits securely as possible on shoulder. Dip, drive lock over head. Ensure you perform this drill in an environment where misguided barbells will not cause material or personal injury.

Looking at the comments from last time fairly modest loads of up to 60lb were sufficient for the push press and up to about 135lb for the dead. Apparently the hook grip came in handy ...

Cheers, kempie

This one should be fun. I've always done one-arm barbell pushpress with the bar parallel to me as opposed to across my chest. Is this legal or does it need to be perpendicular to me?

Can someone explain how we "practice the hook grip" with a one handed lift? Doesn't the hook grip refer to both hands gripping the bar with one over hand and one underhand? With the suitcase DL there really only seems to be one comfortable way to grip the bar - palm facing in.
Any thoughts?

Comment #85 - Posted by: andreT at June 27, 2009 8:23 AM

Andy:

your reffering to the mixed grip. the hook grip is used for lifts like the clean and the snatch. What you do is grab the bar normally, however, rather then putting your fingers down first, you put your thumb down and grab it with your index finger and middle finger, creating a strap out of your hand. It is very efficient and at first very uncomfortable.
Hope that made sense and helped.

Holy suckage! Balancing is not fun, holding on is not fun, and running is most definitely NOT fun. I only had 1 bar so i had to switch weights on and off every time as well. Running took the most time for sure. Push presses were easiest and deadlifts were pretty much one at a time due to one side landing before the other. Runs were...slow...very slow. My entire posterior chain is wiped after this cycle.

PP- 85#
DL- 185#

I probably did 40 reps of push press trying to decide which weight to use. I wanted 95# so bad! I started the workout twice at 95#, but just couldn't control the weight. Plus I caught myself push jerking. I finally settled on 85#. I did not do the deadlifts suitcase style. I was not confortable with the awkward torque on the body. Did them with the bar in front of the legs.

I can equate Lift = Heavy. I still have a problem with Run = Fast. The heavier weight took quite a toll on me.

Still have to do attempt #10 of my 20 rep squat program. I'm at 235#. I'll probaly put it off until tomorrow.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Used 65# lbs for barbell deadlift.

48/6'2"/195 day 10 crossfit
45 lb pp
95 lb dl (grip limited)
jumped rope X 4 min hi intensity instead of running (wimped out because yesterday's 400ms in 104 degrees about killed me.
added in some chest work: push ups 55, 50, 50, freeweight pec flyes 55lb dumbells, 2 sets of 12. I'm sort of a half-ass body-builder, and the vain part of me thinks crossfit doesn't include enough chest work.

Struggled with this one. Not sure if I was doing it right. Kept trying different weights. Managed to trap my finger between twenty plates then found it hard to hold the bar in my right hand. Another one to catch up !!!

Did R s/p and Snatch. (lovely form but no one to see it). No burpees

Came home then spent the rest of the afternoon at A & E. My son has managed to smash the bones in his arm and we will now spend tomorrow at the Childrens Hospital so that he can have an operation to put in pin and plates to try to piece it together. Feel sick. First day of the school holidays feel so sorry for him.

I am fairly new to crossfit. I have been going at it about 3 weeks. I have worked out my entire life, but there is something intriguing about waiting until mid night to find out what your workout is goin to be. The dead lift was awkward at first, but i caught on pretty quick. The push presses were fairly difficult to balance. I can't wait for tomorrow!!

Howdy all! This one was tough 'cuz I had to run on a treadmill - one eye on the boyz, the other on the distance. lol. Survived it. 21:14 was my time. Wish I could have run outside, but that is okay. There will be yet another day to try this again. Oh yeah - we used a 70 lb. kettlebell to deadlift with - balance was a big issue with me - and pressed 25 lb. dumbells. Lots of fun - glad that one is behind me for a little while. Have a great weekend everyone!

went super slow for various reasons, listen up kids don't eat a small zone meal and drink a liter of carbonated water before a WOD. Stomach felt weird but I persevered. Subbed 800m row for 800m run, since I am going to run with a friend later. Also last round, did front one arm barbell deadlifts to contrast against suitcase DLs. Only one bar and no runs mapped at turkey run so we did 65# with side rack push press and suitcase DL, the other person jumped rope (singles) while one lifted. I got 75,95,120,150 on jump ropes. Definitely dropped the bar on my left shoulder once.

This looks like an awesomely sucktastic WoD, but my shoulders aren't liking the presses these days. Yes, I could have run and deadlifted, but then I wouldn't have had the chance to mow my lawn for time. No, really, it sucks too. I used an un-powered mower with a 21 inch mowing deck to mow a one acre+ lawn that has some hill to. I tried counting reps, but lost count at 322 so I'll just post a time of 3:23:42.

Run splits were pretty bad - last three were over 4:00 I think!

Should have gone a little heavier. RH PP were unbroken both rounds, but LH wasn't so great - 65# would have been about right for both.

DL were all unbroken. Probably 155# or even 185# next time...

Not a fan of the 1 arm PP w/barbell but I did like the DL challenge. Either - this was a completely different WOD for me after almost 2.5 years of CF, thats nice :)

Great modified WOD.I really liked those exercises. They revealed some MORE weaknesses in my body. My dominate side performed significantly better, which I know iis not optimal, but normal. Tried some one armed DB presses afterward expecting them to be much easier, but they were not.

Did anyone experience the helicopter effect? On the 10th - 12th reps with the weak hand, the bar would start to rotate at the top. The exercise really shows weak stabilizers...

Not as hard as I thought. Goal was to be under 4 minutes. All 800's were just under 4 minutes and not bad even though I hate running. I tried 115# on the DL, but not stable enough. I also figured out that my left arm is much weaker on the PP.

I rested for a few hours and just went on my big mountain bike loop. 17.47 miles, over 3900' of climbing, 2:21:22. I feel good. Going rock climbing in a couple of hours. Rest tomorrow!

As Rxd (except for a somewhat short 800m course):

20kg (44#) push presses
40kg (88#) deadlifts
800ish m runs

17:30

... this workout is very "runner friendly!"- and one of my longest running workouts after the Big Sur marathon since focusing exclusively on CF! I have to say that the weight was right on from a steady power output perspective. Didn't have to break any sets- but struggled to push out the final 3-4 reps of push presses for the last R/L round. Perhaps would bump the deadlift weight up a bit.

We had a group of 7 of us together in a garage gym and did this in 2 waves. What a great environment.. both from the cheering and the workout point of view!

To be honest, I didn't really like this WOD. It made me feel awkward after. Not a good feeling.

The 1st round I was doing:

55# PP
135# DL
.5 mile on treadmill (I hate treadmills)
55# PP
135# DL
.5 mile on treadmill (I hate treadmills)

Then I went to look at my phone stopwatch and I accidentally stopped the timer... again! I really need to get myself a real stopwatch...

I decided to make it un-timed after that incident

135# DL was too much for me on the 2nd round so I changed it to 115# DL.

The only thing that made my day afterwards was the half a sub sandwich I purposely left in my truck and forgot about.

Who ever said this WOD was sucktastic hit the nail on the head.

As it turns out I'm just a simple kid from AR trying to make my way in this crazy mixed up world. Obviously I didn't learn my basic barbell math very well. I was going to the track and taking a regulation Oly bar and a womens bar (25#) I thought I need 35lbs on the womens bar for the PP. So I brought to 35lb plates and two 45lb plates for the deads. D'oh. Thats 95 lbs.
As it turns out when push comes to shove I can PP 95lbs with one arm. My wife came with me and was actually clapping for me on the first set. On Round 2 she said your not going to do that again are you? You are going to take the weight off and just do the bar right?
Nope, as my dad always use to say, "If you are going to be dumb you better be tough."

My time reflects my lack of toughness.

Did 15 reps each hand each excercise per round, instead of 12. 45lb for push press, 135lb for deadlift done with bar positioned in front like regular deadlift. First run on treadmill, but since doing this alone today didn't have the desire to keep running 800m in place after. 2nd and 3rd ran up to top floor, 2 time around 1/9mi track on outside lane, and back down to starting position. Final run up to track, 3 times around, and down to make up for difference. 22:59.

Comment #251 - Posted by: R.Lee_Seattle at June 27, 2009 8:30 PM

Wow...this WOD kicked my ass. Aside from the fact that I had to run between the upstairs and downstairs of the gym to get to the treadmill, I couldn't complete my runs without resting, my PP was terrible as I couldn't get my balance right and the weights I did were downright embarrassing. Oh and let's not forget the ridiculously long completion time.

On a positive note, the deadlift felt pretty solid, I could have handled more weight.

m/48/177

Started off by working some skills work into my warm up:
BurgenerWUx2
Overhead Squats, 10" Ball, PVC, 10 reps
Snatch, 10" Ball, 10 reps, PVC/15/35

Recorded my snatch session to see what was happening with my form. Need to keep my back angle constant a bit longer. Depth was pretty good. Need to work on speed. Next time I should add a little more weight.

Then I did the wod:
Push Press, Barbell, 65 lbs, 12 reps, RH/LH/RH/LH, 0:49/2:12/2:00/2:31
Deadlift, 140 lbs, 12 reps, LH/RH/LH/RH, 1:06/0:39/0:34/0:31
Run, 880 yards, 4:13/4:21/4:32/4:07
Total 27:37

I did not use chalk for my first set of deadlifts and had difficulty holding onto the bar (even with the hook grip). A little bit of chalk cut my deadlift time down from 1:06 to 0:39. With the exception of Round 1, all deadlifts were unbroken. Probably should have used 150-170 lbs for my deadlifts.

The push presses took a little getting used to. Probably should have used 70 lbs on my right arm and 60 lbs on my left. Push presses were typically broken 8-4 RH and 6-3-3 LH.

My runs were really slow. Should have been able to do each round in less than 4 minutes.

Mama took the day off. The kids are at camp.

Nice WOD. First time with one armed PP/DL. Used 45#barbell for PP; 115# DL. Could probably have gone heavier on DL, but didn't want to push it for the first time.

CFWU (5 pu's/round)
Walk 0.1 mi

Run 800m (4:02)
12x push press right arm 45lb
12x dead lift left arm 80lb
Run 800m (4:51)
12x push press left arm 45lb
12x dead lift right arm 80lb

Weights seemed heavy when testing them out before the workout, but definitely could have gone heavier--maybe 60lb/100lb.

Run 800 meters
Left arm barbell push-press 12 reps (45#)
Right arm deadlift 12 reps (80#)
Run 800 meter

I have to tell you, I wanted so hard to stop on 1 round for some reason, but kept chugging along and got it in. Very cool workout using the 1 arm. I’m amazed at the diversity and variety of workouts I’m getting with XF. This is my 4th week and enjoying each day of it.

I had limited time at gym today, so I did 400m runs instead

used 45# for push press and 95# for deadlift. Forearms were burning by the last set. Finished in the 20-25 minute range, wasted some time setting up and trying to find collars for the bar. Would have likely been in the 30-35 minute range if I ran 800 meters.

Comment #335 - Posted by: EREK at June 29, 2009 9:55 AM

30lb bbpp with short barbell. The only oly bars the gym has are men's and that would have been too heavy. A women's bar would have been ideal at 35lb, but...

Comment #367 - Posted by: Vaughn at June 30, 2009 8:05 AM

Newbie, only my third workout so I went kind of light on the deadlifts. Have a history of knee injuries that started with one legged presses. Running wasn't an option so I substituted with stairs. Needless to say, my knee kills.

45lb press
60lb deads
10 flights of stairs

approx. 15 minutes. Definitely could have gone heavier on the deads.

Finished with an extra rd of 60lb presses for 10 and another set of deads, 5 rounds of heavy bag, 5 rounds of double end bag.

I definitely went too light...but I've never done one armed presses and deadlifts

I didn't "push" my press. I did them very strict. It's still weird doing "cheat" movements: old bodybuilding/powerlifting habits die hard.

45lb presses probably should have tried 65 or so even considering it was my first go around(pretty sad for a former 365lb raw flat bencher. I'm surprised at how hard some of these cheat-isolation movements are. Cool stuff)

90lb deadlift (which actually was quite a bit of work for me-a 510lb beltless deadlifter!!!)

ran 600meters (running kill me-I'm SO out of shape for it)

took 25 minutes to do 2 rounds. My running is getting a little better but man I'm working like a dog.
