This is gonna hurt... lats are still sore from Wednesday's PU's.

Comment #3 - Posted by: Grady at June 5, 2009 9:09 PM

Question: Are rests allowed in between each set, such as is the case with power lifts?

Comment #4 - Posted by: Max at June 5, 2009 9:11 PM

Guess I'm going to the gym tomorrow rather than the garage. Dang it. Tape will surely be used!

Comment #5 - Posted by: Eric Gohl 22/5'10/162 at June 5, 2009 9:11 PM

Max-
There's a video of the WOD in the Exercises and Demos section and it shows Brendan taking about 5 minutes of rest in between each round, but not in between exercises.

Comment #6 - Posted by: Eric Gohl 22/5'10/162 at June 5, 2009 9:13 PM

#7 I just read your nearly exact same comment in the last time's comment board... thanks for the help.

Comment #7 - Posted by: SGT Collins at June 5, 2009 9:16 PM

Eric-
Thanks for pointing that out. The workout looks awesome. CAN'T WAIT!

Comment #8 - Posted by: Max at June 5, 2009 9:32 PM

Actually, Eric, Lynne herself has stated numerous times inthe message boards that Brendan is not doing this WOD as it was intended. Since there is no mention of time, rest as much as you would like after both the bench AND the pull-ups. Coach and Lauren are very specific when writing these WODs.

Both methods are pretty brutal workouts, but in different ways. Note which one you use, record accurately, and understand that your score will be different depending upon your method.

That said, rx'd is with as much rest as you would like.

I could write a book on training around acute injury. Thanks for the video series, Kstar!

fantastic WOD, also CF community dont forget that tomorrow is one of the greatest if not the greatest day of the 20th century. Thanks to the greatest generation for their courage, valor and just plain balls.

I'm new her (this will be my 3rd WOD) and I've never even tried to bench press my body weight.
Crossfit will be a lot harder than I thought. And to think I thought it would never do bench presses....

Comment #20 - Posted by: Nick T at June 5, 2009 10:45 PM

Coach and Lauren are usually pretty specific about what it is they intend on a workout. So here they have prescribed 5 rounds of max rep bench press at bodyweight and pull ups. No indication is given as to when to rest or how long - that is up to you. Just make a note of what you do so you can compare apples and apples next time this WOD comes around.

Crossfit very rarely asks for maxes as they are not conducive to sustained output. Today is different. Of course if you are benching alone then safety first but if you have a spotter push the envelope. If alone, dumbbells are a safer, harder alternative. If that option is not available then rack the bar with a few reps in reserve. Same as the pull ups - squeeze out extra reps until your fingers peel off the bar.

Of course, if bodyweight bench is too much, reduce the weight to something you know you can get 5 or more with and push that hard. If you don't have pull ups check out the suggestions at BrandX for progressions.

Cheers, kempie

Comment #21 - Posted by: kempie at June 6, 2009 12:34 AM

To #20 & #22:

If you cannot bench bodyweight then go check out the BrandX scaled workout suggestion. I'm only 6 weeks into cross-fit myself & there are still things I cannot do, when this happens I go to the scaled workouts. FYI - Main Page -> Start Here Line -> BrandX Scaled Workouts.

Also, if you go to the FAQ section of the website you will see recommendations for the 'official' cross-fit warm-up. Part of the warm-up is parallel bar dips, I would suggest the cross-fit warm up almost every day you do cross-fit. Not only will it get your muscles ready but it will also constantly train your body in some of the most important core movements (i.e. squats, pull-ups, etc....)

Benching 37kg (~60% BW).

1) 7 + 7
2) 5 + 6
3) 5 + 5
4) 4 + 6
5) 1 + 6

Really not feeling it today. Perhaps I didn't eat enough at lunch?

Hi, very new to this.

No way I can get to a gym to do this WOD, and dont have enough weight in house to do body weight bench press.....any suggestions as to what I could sub the bench press with, or just go for the max weight I have for max reps?

Thanks,

Tom J

Hi Tom J and welcome to the exciting world of Crossfit!

Just use whatever weight you have on hand at this time and try to find a place to work out or get more weights. If you have a friend to help you out, you could do some push-ups with weight on your back (or even your friend), but this is just my own invention on the fly. Enjoy!

On the first set of pullups, there was an excrutiating ball of fire aquiring within my left lat. After getting off the bar, it seemed like someone injected a 4 in. diameter sphere of pain deep within the muscle. I'm not sure why. Took it easy on the next couple of sets, then decided to move to palms-in "chin-ups" and this seemed to help. I guess I'll go for a cleansing run and hit the ibuprofin in large doses - that aughta do it!

"Lynne" - subbed push-ups

Five rounds for max reps of:
Push-Ups
Pull-ups
3 minutes rest between rounds

1 - 33/8
2 - 31/6
3 - 27/7
4 - 27/5
5 - 22/5

Pull-ups were definitely limited by grip strength today, but I assumed any time I come off the bar is the end of that round.

I really like "Lynne", so I went ahead and did the WOD, but this was after playing ball for 90 minutes, so I was tired. Whatever, no excuses. 3 minutes rest between sets, as per usual.

Results:

Bench Press (175) / Pull-Ups

1. 15 / 13
2. 12 / 10
3. 8 / 8
4. 6 / 6
5. 6 / 6

2nd set of 12 on BP is a PR for Lynne. On pull-ups, I did strict pull-ups because of my torn callous. I was taped up so it didn't hurt too much. Reps are low, but I feel good about these, as I went to lockout or near lockout on every rep.

Off my PR by 7 (177). No spotter this time though so had to play it safe. Probably could have at least tied it, but wouldn't have beat it by much if i did. Kind of felt out of it today once i started. Also had taped hands to protect ripped calluses, i think it actually helped my grip from slipping.

Since it’s the 65th Anniversary of the D-Day invasion, I deviated from the posted WOD and did something to honor the brave men who stormed the beach that day. Thought some of you might be interested. Here is my D-Day challenge:

50 Rounds for time of:
20 Pushups
20 Squats
10 Situps

Estimates vary on the number of American KIA but I’ve seen 2,499 on more than one website. I figured one rep (PU, SQ or SU) for each KIA was a good way to commemorate the day. The last rep, as always, is for the Airborne Ranger in the sky. Took me 96:06 as I really started to run out of steam at the end.

Modified heavily. Added back squats and alternated sets between the 3 exercises:

Bench Press:
70#/10
90#/10
100#/5
110#/5
120#/5

Pull-ups (Gravitron Assist):
BW-88#/5
BW-82#/5
BW-76#/5
BW-70#/5
BW-64#/5

Back Squats:
70kg/5
100kg/5
120kg/5
125kg/3
125kg/3

No pain in the repaired shoulder to speak of. However, the other one is complaining a lot. I think starting next week I'll be able to use less than 100# assist on the Gravitron for my pull-ups and dips in the warm-up. Slowly but surely getting back to doing a real pull-up :)

Left shoulder wasn't feeling the benches today, so I subbed in push-ups with a 25 lb. sandbag on my back. Not a perfect sub, as it yielded about 10 too many reps each round. Rested at least five minutes after each exercise.

Total: 267 (nothing to compare to, really, as I've always benched.)

Shoulder needed some icing, so I called it after 4 rounds. Previous PU high was 39.

Also wanted to give a little shout-out for one my athletes, Dustin Winterhalt. He's an undefeated pro-MMA fighter, has been training with us for about 3 months, and totaled 308 reps on this today at a bodyweight of 180. Unbelievable, and his performances on nearly every other WOD are equally impressive. Remember that name for next the '10 Games.

Funny they should have that article about training though acute injuries! I have been having lots of them lately. I managed to smash both hands almost two weeks ago. I have 2 good workouts in since. I am an all or nothing kind of guy. I just skipped most workouts, or did really lame warm up type workouts instead. Today I went hard on Lynne. Funny I have been doing CF for over a year, but first time doing Lynne.

I didn't want to work-out today. I jacked up my arms really bad when I did "Erin" Wednesday. I think the 40 pound Dumbbells split clean jacked up from what it looks like on arm anatomy the brachii. It hurts still on both arms on the outside of the arms where the arm bends. It keeps me from stretching out the arm all the way!

I really suck at bench presses but I still worked out anyways...

My reps:

175 BW bench press/pull-ups

6/18
8/14
7/14
5/10

I didn't have enough energy at the last round of the workout so I went for 135 max reps on the bench press...

My arms felt normal during the workout but now they are cramping again... *Sigh*

Last time my goal was to keep my pullups above 10.

This go around my first 3 rounds were at or over 20 pullups. On the 4th round I got to 19 and my grip was failing. I knew I needed to explode hard to get that 20th pullup.

Well I exploded, my grip gave out and I was suddenly falling towards the ground horizontally. BOOM, I landed on my back. I quickly stood up, dusted myself off, checked to see if my buddy saw me and/or was laughing his ass off and then had a good laugh at myself.

Good times

Geez this workout sucked so bad, I was almost considering not posting.

So, to rationalize my poor performance, I spent the last two days on vacation with my family and eating not nearly as well as I should while trying to fight off a cold. No, I didn't over 1ndulge with mass quantities of liquid grain carbohydrates, but I did some mass distruction on peanut butter, chocolate, and three slices of awesome pizza. To add insult to my dietary tribulations, I am still working through a nasty double shoulder impingement, that makes both the bench an kipping pull-up massive pains in the ass.

First time posting a comment. I just had to spray about breaking my PR for pullups with each successive set. PR was 36, I did 42, 46, and 50 but on the 50 set I tore my palms up pretty bad. So I went out for some ice-cream to celebrate/drown my sorrows. I'll have to tape my hands if I try that many pullups again!

54/121. A lot better than 41/101. I really thought I was going to exhaustion every time. Looking at the numbers, I'm thinking I could have worked harder. Get a spot on bench and go until failure. Grip held me back on pull ups. Need to push through.

Skills warm up 5 reps. I need to move to ten reps starting tomorrow. I didn't do any gymnastic work today(i.e. handstands, rings, kips) due to lack of equitment and time.

I decided not to do body weight bench because my weight has been going down and I want my stregth to go up. I have not been doing any heavy bench in the last year or so, so my weight need to go up drasticaly before I will be happy, but I am sure all this shoulder work will help a lot. I also decided to not do max reps with pull ups because I can't do enough pull ups for me to get the volume that I need to grow my stength. the work out looked like this.

5 x 5 with 225 for the bench. I started off with a triple and a double. 2nd set was a double, a double, and a single. 3rd set was a double, then three singles. 4th set was the same. 5th set was 5 singles. I tried to keep the rest on the broken sets just long enough to squeeze out the next rep.

5 x 10 strict pull ups. 1st set was 10 straight. 2nd set was 6 + 2 + 2. 3rd set was the same. 4th set was 7 + 2 + 1. 5th set was 8 + 1 + 1.

I finished by stripping the bar on bench, 225-205-135-45. The reps looked like 2-2-12-30.

Then I did 75 leg lifts before my inner thighs started cramping up and I had to switch to lower ab cruches for the last 25. I ran approx. 3 miles (26 min flat) while focusing on my Chi/Pose form during lunch and I think that really taxed my muscles.

bw bp 5/pu 4
then I started dropping weight and doing assisted pull ups so that I could get a reasonable number of reps each round. Didn't keep track.

I love crossfit. If I ever see coach here in Hawaii, I have to buy him a meal, a drink...something. Something that can serve as a small token of my gratitude for all he and Crossfit have given me.

Thanks, coach. You da man!

I was sooo frickin mad at my bench rounds 3,4,&5 because I asked for a spotter so I could confidently go for that one extra... I told the guy, and woman that I asked for a spot, that I'll probably make a bit of noise but DON'T Touch the bar unless I say "HELP", they said o.k. and immediately after I made a big noise they frickin yanked the bar and racked it... I was tired, but really pissed off.. I know I was robbed of a couple of reps in each set, and I didn't have a spotter on my 2nd set so I just stopped when I was pretty spent.. I'm happy as hell with my pullups since I did the 800 x 40 pullup WOD the day before doing this WOD and still the pullups felt pretty good. I almost never do bench, and although I used a couple more pounds than my bodyweight for simplicity, I think if I work on the bench a little those numbers will climb... I must be honest that I am not that great at benching and I've always been a dumbell bench guy, for more range of motion and you can't bounce and hit your chest so I like that as well, so my technique is not great with the bench. Still better overall numbers than last time... This WOD really wipes me out. Fun stuff.

#27 It is inappropriate to ask people about their finances. I would assume if someone hasn't given they either are not interested or don't have the finances. Do you really want someone to email you back and say the hold up is they are broke? I have personally paid, but I think it is rude and nosy to have someone post questions about money and where it goes on a fitness board. Mind your own business, you'll be better off.
