Very early post- I hope that means the Galssmans are taking some time off this weekend?
Thanks for all the work you do!
(thanks just isn't good enough)

Comment #7 - Posted by: PXT Cody at June 4, 2009 2:02 PM

I know today is a rest day but with such an early post I want to get to it now. But then I will be sad tomorrow because I won't have a WOD to look forward too. Have to stay strong and resist the urge. This is going to be harder than avoiding sugar. lol

Comment #8 - Posted by: DUANE at June 4, 2009 2:12 PM

Knocking this one out in about an hour. Goal is 425lbs. Going to start with some front squat practice though, need work on that catch position.

Comment #9 - Posted by: angelo 38/74"/ Feb'07 at June 4, 2009 2:18 PM

OK folks, we've already had one heavy day this month so you all should realise that yes, this is the WOD for the day. After your general warm up and building up to your working weights you have a couple of options.
1 - pick a percentage of your known 1rm and get some volume in at the high end.
2 - ramp up from a load you know you can manage and increment up to a new 1rm

For either option, allow yourself somewhere round 5 minutes between efforts.

If the deadlift is new to you or you are in any way unsure about your form check out the multitude of vids available on the Exercise and Demos page, start light and increase the load slowly. Stop before things get sketchy and live to lift another day.

Avoid lifting straps but if you need to use a belt for your high end stuff no one will think less of you.

Cheers, kempie

I'd much rather talk about the good the US does for those of us who've put something in...

Loved getting this email today:

>Dear _____________,

It has been a tough time for the financial services industry, but USAA was profitable in 2008 and continues to be in 2009. We did not take a cent of government bailout money. In fact, we returned $857 million to our members last year.*

We feel it is our duty to make sure our members and other military families know the value they can access in USAA. In keeping with our goal of serving the entire military community, we have begun a new promotional campaign, initially focused on USAA Free Checking. With free ATM withdrawals nationwide† and no monthly fees or minimum balances, it is a logical entry point to the value that USAA offers.

The campaign is launching now in cities with a significant military presence. It is intended to reach out to those military personnel and their family members who are not yet members, with the message that our banking products are a great first step toward a firm financial foundation. We hope to also send a strong message to current members who don't yet bank with USAA.

We are stronger together. This campaign helps our mission of facilitating financial security for those who serve our country.

Sincerely,

Josue (Joe) Robles, Jr.
Maj. General, USA (Ret.)
President and Chief Executive Officer

Right Shoulder MRI Result: SLAP Tear, type IIA, with partial subscapularis tear. Same exact diagnosis as the left shoulder. I will get this fixed, it's just a matter of figuring out when. Kinda bummed about it, but at least I know why I've been having shoulder pain for the past decade.

**FRAT**

So, I'm sitting here with a glass of wine ("The Prisoner", trust me on this one), a computer, and Crossfit.com. I am a happy, content bingo.

Thanks, Coach and Lauren, for this program and this community. For all of the bombast and blather on Rest Day, what we will see from the community today (results, PR's, people reaching out to Herm--so, so sorry to hear that Brother), is why I come here every day. Here, and the gym.

Thanks, to Greg and Lauren, and also to each one of you here in our "virtual" affiliate gym.

Very weak at deadlifts and back squats (hemilamenectomy a few years back, that means I am missing part of several of my lumbar vertebrae). Looking forward to breaking 300# tomorrow. Thanks for the early posts, lets me go to sleep thinking about tomorrow morning.

Comment #31 - Posted by: dan m at June 4, 2009 4:27 PM

If today was a Metcon I may have been sobbing myself to sleep tonight. I must be overtrained. My wind is slow and my heart rate is up.

I started last WOD at 9.0 on the treadmill at 1% incline, which is ok for me. by the second round I had to lower it to 7.5.

I'm not sure what I expected, I rarely sleep more that 4 hours a night.

I'm not complaining, I'm just complaining!

Comment #32 - Posted by: John-In-Jersey at June 4, 2009 4:37 PM

CFE today: run 15min - 2 miles.

So excited to do DL's

Herm:
Sorry about the shoulder. Don't get too bummed out. I tore my Left ACL in college, followed by a fractured ankle, followed by a torn ACL on the Right. All in all, I injured my knees four times and had two ACL repairs with cartilage damage over 4 years. I was depressed; like crazy bummed out, but now I'm squatting 435 and DL'ing 460 (maybe more, we'll see tomorrow). I'm stronger then ever. hang in there, man.

Comment #33 - Posted by: brian p at June 4, 2009 4:43 PM

Greg, what's your point?

Comment #34 - Posted by: Matt_in_Oz at June 4, 2009 4:49 PM

Thanks Lauren

Comment #35 - Posted by: alvarenga at June 4, 2009 4:54 PM

I enjoy deadlifts but am unsure about my form. A buddy and I have tried often to get better, but seems whenever we try and ask someone how we "look" they say that they wouldn't even bother with the lift!

It's quite discouraging! But I will still give this a go tomorrow! Cheers!

Comment #36 - Posted by: Katie at June 4, 2009 4:59 PM

Herm, just make 09 your 'legs and wind year'. Or think of it as a long-term plan to even up all those 1-handed snatches and presses and swings you did in Feb and March. Sorry to hear, but at least you know what's ahead.

Lacrosse game Sat so no max deads tomorrow. Did the 275 DL + burpees WOD today instead, as Rx'd in 8:27. Thanks Coach!

Comment #37 - Posted by: Benny1 M/40/74"/220 at June 4, 2009 5:01 PM

Comment #38 - Posted by: Kevin C. at June 4, 2009 5:23 PM

Oh Herm, so sorry to hear that. You are right though, its good to finally put and end to decades of pain. You have been so inspiring to lots of us with your last rehab, we will be happy to live thru this one with you too. Do it right by doing it ONCE!
I'm going to use every last little bitty weight I have for this tomorrow! (we only have 300lbs, and I better get there soon or I'm gonna freak!)

Comment #39 - Posted by: julie parisien 5'8"/163/37 at June 4, 2009 5:24 PM

Heck maybe cookie will help you with that anyway.

I haven't done deadlifts in a long time so this should be interesting. I got 515 at the end of my senior year of high school, but that was 2 years ago. Our football coach at the college I play at doesn't really incorporate deadlifts into his workouts, so I'm gonna aim for at least 465. We'll see how it goes. BRING IT ON!!!

Bummer Herm. I feel for you. I shattered my heel/foot a couple weeks ago and am awaiting surgery next week to get it all put back together. After that, no weight bearing for 12 weeks.

Long term injurys really suck the life out of you emotionally. I'm going through it right now.

We could always tag team the WODs for a while. I'll take the upper half of the body and you can take the lower.

So, I'm sitting here with a glass of wine ("The Prisoner", trust me on this one), a computer, and Crossfit.com. I am a happy, content bingo.

Bingo, I concur, I love "Orin Swift The Prisoner." I've have some 2005 and 2007 cellared. Another good one is St. Clement Oroppas.

Herm #22 Sounds like the same MRI results I have on my right shoulder. Through therapy I've re-gained full range of motion and I'm pain free. However, it costs me a few pounds on my overhead lifts. I do a lot of band work to strengthen and warm up my shoulder before each WOD. After watching Jeff Martone's video on Kettle Bell rehab, I think I will start incorporating some of that into my pre-WOD routine.

I've consulted with 2 Orthopedic surgeons who recommended against surgery but, if it acts up again I'll probably go that route.

Good luck.

Deadlifts always put me in such a bad move. I want to go heavy but as soon as I do my form gets really really bad. Working out alone doesn't help since I'm trying to coach myself.

I'm not gonna say this is what I deadlifted but instead "What I picked up off the ground."

Strong Lil Pony – thanks for asking! I did take a three day break with just some walking. My niece was around that weekend hanging with me so she kept me busy and sidetracked playing Frisbee, running off to the pool, and going to some local kid events. I felt much better after. I had aimed to take a full week, but…

I LOVE DL’s, and do the happy DL dance when they come up in WOD’s, but no DL’s for me today. Since I did 433 DL’s on Wed, bum and hammies still recovering. Could not go to yoga last night because I could not bend over! In fact, sitting at work today is proving to be quite painful! Ha ha ha

Have a great Friday everyone!

Guys...travel schedule and a big event in my life got my training schedule (and nutrition) all outta wack...first day back after about 2+ weeks.

Will do my DL later, but took advantage of some dead time in my work day to get in a quick workout.

I really need some motivation as I've put on a couple pounds, and today's warmup just proved to me what happend when I slack off even a little at my "advanced age".

Here's what I did so far...

"Core Buddy"

Warmup: std, shorted dips and pullups
20 x leg press: 5x110, 5x150, 10x190

5 rounds for time:
Max leg press x 10 (190#)

DL 1-1-1-1-1-1-1

255-275-285-290-295-300F-275.

Haven't done DL regularly lately and it showed. Not even close to my PR (315). I guess you gotta take the good with the bad.

Post WOD:
4 x 20 Dips.

"...I"m a Crossfitter, not a bodybuilder. I don't do curls, raises, extensions and pushdowns. I deadlift, squat, clean, snatch, jerk, do handstands and pull ups.
I am an athlete, not a sculptor. I don't do the treadmill, elliptical and stationary bike. I run, bike, swim, play sports hard and fast. I don't watch my heartrate to stay in the "fat burning zone".
Routine is my enemy, I don't do back and bi's on monday, shoulders and tri's on tuesday, chest on thursday and very little to no legs on friday.
I eat meat and vegetable, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. I don't eat 20 egg yokes, 6 chicken breasts and 2 cups of rice for breakfast and then drink 1 liter of protein shake for a snack. I don't use steroids.
I sleep 8 hours every night. I don't take 4 half hour naps throughout the day.
I play new sports, hard and fast. I don't do low intensity cardio because I an worried about "losing mass".
I wear regular clothes. I don't wear sweat pants and muscle shirts all the time because those are the only clothes that can fit me.
I only look in the mirror while I train on my oly lifts to correct my form. I don't look in the mirror to see how defined my abs or shoulders are and how big my biceps are.
I am a Crossfitter dammit!..."

Hey, can anyone tell me where I can find that thing c alled :The Spartan"? I had printed a copy of it a while back but I lost it.

My all-time PR is 205, which I haven't been able to do since I started CrossFitting full time. CF has certainly done wonders for my all-around fitness and I am totally addicated to it, but i have lost some strength... which sucks... I do love lifting heavy things!

#182 Jocelyn,

Hey girl, yeah, the same thing happened to me when I first started Crossfit as well. I started supplementing my CF workouts with various lifts as a little extra-deads being one of those. I'm now back to my all time high! Give that a shot, if you have the energy.

Cheers!

So: Deadlifts 1-1-1-1-1:
225x1,245x1,265x1,275f,1x270f

Good news is i was able to break 275 off the floor, but could get it above the knee. So the grip strength is improving.

I cashed out with some O-lift practice and then 2 rounds of 10 pull-up burpees.

Wow, nice deadlift numbers everyone.

I did mine yesterday, today did half-Angie (50 reps each exercise), 5:12.

Warmup: various things, included handstands, OHS, snatches, L-sits (all the things I suck at), oly lift skills and drills, box jumps, etc., in kind of a disorganized, random mass.

Ran a bit in Chuck Taylors today in an experiment to see if it will improve running form and strengthen feet. Felt weird for sure, just did 4 minutes on the tread.

Only did 6 sets because of the torn calluses...again! All in the same places as the last tears, but not as bad so i should be able to continue on.
But uh, more importantly...what do you do when you run out of room for more weight??? As soon as I put 380 down the 2.5 and 5 plates fell off and i had no room for collars. How am i supposed to get to 400 with that!! :(

#295 Dustin:

FRAT is an acronym for f#@k reading all that. This was originally coined by the great and powerful Jakers and was used to precede a lengthy post. Then it got beautifully lost in translation by our loving South American friend s'more. Strong Lil' Pony, Cougar Hunter, Cookie, Herm, myself and others threw fuel on the fire in the early going and then it just became a fixture.

Nowadays it's used as a slang term referring to the group of regulars here who post times, share stories and encourage and support one another. The "FRAT" is non exclusive and welcomes any and all who appreciate a good workout, full frontal hugs and bad English :-)

Go FRAT!

3 days till AFBMT so I did my first filthy fifty.

2:49 jumping pullups
3:18 dumbell swings 35 lb
walking lunge(unbroken)
knees to elbows (forearms hurting more than anything)
push press
back extensions(unbroken)
wall ball shots (Need to go all the way down next time)
4:08 burpees
6:18 double unders (not good at these.. just did one at a time.

not sure about time on others. The guy that was timing me got confused on the stopwatch.

Incorporated some skills work into my warm up:

Double Unders, 15 reps
GHD Sit Ups, 15 reps
Back Extensions, 15 reps
Handstand push Ups, 15 reps
Muscle Up Progressions, Rings at 65", 10 reps
Overhead Squats, PVC Pipe, 10 reps

Then went heavy on the following lifts:

Overhead Squats, 3 reps, PVC/35/45/95/115(2 reps)/115(Tied PR)/120(2 reps)
Shoulder Press, 5 reps, 45/75/95/130(Tied PR)
Deadlift, 1 rep, 135/185/225/345/410(F)/410(F)/380/365/225

Felt really weak on my deadlifts tonight. Didn't come close to my 090423 PR of 420 lbs. My lower back has been pretty stiff the past couple weeks. Perhaps I am overtraining; or maybe I am undertraining. I'm just not sure.

My son Luke (m/13/125) joined me with the work out tonight:

Overhead Squats, 3 reps, PVC/35/45/95(PR)
Shoulder Press, 5 reps, 45/75/85/95(F)
Deadlift, 1 rep, 130/185/225(Tied PR)/230(F)/230(F)

Great job, Luke - keep up the good work!

Mama (f/50/130) did the following workout today:

2 rounds for time:
Run, 440 yards
Push Ups, Knees, 20 reps
Squats, Down to D-Ball, 30 reps
Sit Ups, Anchored, 40 reps
Total 14:00

Brittany (f/11/65) did the following workout today:

For time:
Pull Ups, Assisted, 1" White Band, 25 reps
Total 3:35

Great job, guys! Keep up the good work!

Stopped at 375, my knee is as big as a volleyball. I had to wrap it just to do this, it didn't hurt, but I thought it wise to stop anyway. I felt I had over 400 in me today.

Felt really good, but very hard. I thought I was doing 375 and was super pissed when on SET SIX I realized I wasn't. The last set was kind of rough, but I probably could have done all sets at 375 or 385. I know I am going to feel it in my trap's tomorrow.

Still no 300, and still about 30 pounds off of 2xBW.

Good stuff...

Funny thing happened on my way to my one rep max.

After regular warm up, did 1x at 135-225-315-385 trying to strictly keep form.

Then did 405 then 425 (pr) - almost lost grip on the 425. Then dropped down to 405 (again trying to keep strict form) and about 3 in off the ground my left hamstring popped. After that I packed it in. We'll see . . .

did 2 sets of 10 60kg high pulls, 1 set pull ups, 1 set dips, 2 sets GHD and 2 sets back extensions

Probably sensible - had lower back issue in early April and haven't done heavy DLs since March.

All in all, pretty happy with the results and may go up another 5kg next time

Felt like I could do more, but didn't want to aggravate my back injury.

Hit 255 last time.

I'm not comfortable maxing on Dead's just yet, I want to focus on form a bit more. Instead I did triples and finished with a few incline sprints on the treadmill.

275x3, 295x3, 305x3, 315x3, 325x3.

These felt good and am looking forward to the bench and PU's tomorrow.

Im new to these workouts. can someone tell me what 1-1-1-1-1-1-1 means? Is that 7 sets of 7?

1st attempt at DL since hurting my elbow on a previous DL day. No problems. I think the key is a tight/painful hook grip which allowed me to not have to squeeze so hard on the bar. I'm super happy I can DL again. My thumbs are pissed..

I definitely need to be careful with DL. If I don't exhale during the rep, I come close to passing out. I cannot hold valsalva during rep without getting lightheaded/tunnel vision.
