Good one...help eat away some extra calories from this weekend.

Remembering all those that served and sacrificed for our freedom on this Memorial Day...

I'm wrecked. Did Frellen yesterday and Michael with heavy deads the other day.

My Zoneing is on point and my training intensity is higher than ever. I've been on the ground like that chick in the pic after every wod. It hurts so good.

OK listen...

I rarely post on the site; I just get the workouts and get to it and record my times on my own. But I NEED TO WARN THE NEW CROSSFITTERS OUT THERE... Barbara wrecked me the first time I tried it. It is not easy. If you think this is going to be a walk in the park, you're in for a suprise. I would suggest trying for 3 rounds if you are new. Seriously. Be realistic.

Comment #14 - Posted by: Andrew Pucci at May 25, 2009 5:39 PM

Just watched the CrossFit Movie, "Every Second Counts..." with my boyfriend...

To tell you the truth, I was kind of disappointed... There was no feature of any of the Female Competitors, other than strategically placed T @ A shots, or Women as "supporters" roles. Would have loved to see Jolie, Gillian, Calista, and some of the other kickass women of CrossFit in there. My Rx Fran time of 3:31 beats some of the other guys in the CrossFit Universe.

Disappointed, I guess the hype built me up too much...

Comment #15 - Posted by: Julie at May 25, 2009 5:46 PM

Nice, I did Barbara today as punishment for the weekend, the first time I've been able to finish her, but it did leave me wrecked for an hour afterwards where I lay in a heap on the floor.

RRG all the way! please join if you haven't, it is extremely important that we all do so. As trainers or affilliates. our community deserves to be taken care of by those who understand what we offer

Comment #22 - Posted by: CrossFit El Paso at May 25, 2009 7:00 PM

Wow, that CAP elite fitness is painful to watch. I cannot describe my confusion and sorrow after watching their video.

Comment #23 - Posted by: Mike/20/5'11"/170lbs at May 25, 2009 7:12 PM

The workout for that weekend was as follows:
In teams of eight, run 400m, 400 Squat cleans at 95 and 65, each person completes 5 rounds of 10 hand stand push ups 10 pull ups (no wall for the hspu), 200 squat cleans, run 400m

This past weekend was amazing. It is increasingly obvious to me and anyone else who may care to pay attention, that CrossFit is reaching further than ever to make this the best program in the world.

Comment #24 - Posted by: john brown at May 25, 2009 7:14 PM

Hey ladies, stop bashing crossfit and the crossfit movie. If you can do better, than do it. They fetured Jolie in the journal. Shell out a few bucks and you can get plenty of Jolie and lots of other crossfit women.

So far as the RRG goes, what's the hold up people? Support the community. The RRG is dead in the water. We've been stuck at 61K for about a week now. Only 2 weeks left and that's it. No rrg and no crossfit.

Get on it people.

PROPS TO THE FRAT!!!

I've done this one last time at a CrossFit gym. Hopefully I'll beat my time:

34:15 minus the supposedly 12 minutes rest would of equaled 22:15 all together. divided by 5 which would of equaled approximately 4:45 for each round

Hey all, been busy and its hard to post when I'm not doing the metcons with ya. Soon, soon I'll be back...

CONGRATS to the killers from GFCM up in Albany this weekend. You guys kicked butt- I heard the GFCM cheering section was the loudest! Yea boi- way to represent JERSEY.

Cookie, Julie - that's a bummer with the women from the DVD. Thats a suprise. I say we go find Joey and give him some big FRAT big frontal hugs, 'ceptin' we don't let go and suffocate him for making such a bonehead remark. He obviously has no idea WHO he was talking to LOL

And yes, the rumors are true... join me in the happy dance. A Boyfriend. Who CrossFits. And is doing Starting Strength too Yay :) Y'all might get to meet the Lucky Guy in July at the Games

Joey#25 - no bashing at all. great film, enjoyed it, in fact - just wish women were included. Had the reverse been true, i'm sure you'd have asked yourself the same question. Simple :)

Comment #32 - Posted by: Cookie at May 25, 2009 7:55 PM

WOMEN? I was invited to a private screening of ESC, and everyone needs to understand that the makers of the movie also followed women, but their stories did not evolve as well as their male counterparts. There are many things that were involved in making this documentary including MONEY, the makers of this film did a phenominal job! They would, and states they would love to do a movie only following women athletes so if everyone would like to pay them to fly around the country and film the ladies give Sevan a check and some airplane tickets.......

Bad move on capelite.com's part. They need to change their wording. Their crossfit description is a complete rip-off from crossfit.com, and worse is that they don't credit Greg Glassman anywhere.

Comment #25 - Posted by: Joey at May 25, 2009 7:17 PM

First off, with the "If you think you can do better" statement. Really now, Joey, did you have to make yourself look like a complete jerk? Or is it not obvious to you that a critique is in order, and sometimes needed?

Second, most of us, including Cookie and myself, have a CFJ subscription. It's in no way, shape or form comparable to highlighting women in "Every Sec Counts". Not saying one or the other is better. It would have been nice to see the other gender performing CF WODs, even if in limited quantities. Understand that could have happened without becoming the highlight of the movie.

Third, did you really think the ladies here were bashing Crossfit in general? Wow.

Sevan and Carey,

Great job editing the movie. Especially with the sound from Josh's pool. I bought my copy the first day it was available. Maybe there would be enough demand for "Every Second Counts II: The Women". I would be the first on a long waiting list of Crossfit women fans around the world.

About Capelite.com, well its obvious that they know about crossfit some how, but they lack on tecnique, and programming, they probably use some crossfit movements, but their tecnique sucks really bad. I'm from Mexico and I would say that I'm one of the few that know about crossfit and train Crossfit as their principal conditioning method, I'm also a personal trainer and most of my clients train crossfit but the first thing that I teach them is technique and the basic movements...then Intensity....

Comment #40 - Posted by: Jesse at May 25, 2009 9:09 PM

Joey,

Think of a Nazi, a real one, not a person that you just don't like or who challenges you and your preferences, but a Nazi, a 1933-1945 Nazi, a jack-booot stomping in the face of humanity forever. Then think of a woman, or a man who is a feminist.

Then get a clue.

Just did Barbara, and I took #14's idea and only did 3 rounds, because this is my [3rd?]workout. Finished the 3rd round with a total of 15.49 seconds (without including the rest)

Couldn't do the Pull-Ups all the way through, so when I went to failure, I did the remaining Reps doing negatives. And I had to take a break at 28 pushups, rest a few seconds, than pound out the last two.

I was kinda disappointed in my time to be honest. I thought I could do so much better. It kinda upsets me a bit. =(

CrossFit Champions called CAP Elite out!

Comment #45 - Posted by: Elite at May 25, 2009 10:28 PM

I have to agree with Julie. This is the first vehicle that really reaches out to the non-CrossFit masses. Imagine how rich the movie would have been to balance some of the vignettes with stories about the female athletes, and how moving they would be. The same ripped calluses, the blood sweat and tears fuel the fire-breather females, and there's a powerful story to be told--one of empowerment and the process of becoming that not only female athletes can relate to, but all sizes, shapes, and genders. Having said this, it's easy to armchair produce the movie after it's been made, and I'm sure that there's no one better than Sevan and Carey to make the much anticipated sequel.

I'll have to say also, that the scene where Josh Everett shows his true humanity dealing with the loss of his father made me respect him that much more from afar...I found myself rooting for him, standing up yelling at my TV during the final round of C&J's. Powerful scenes.

We do both Barbaras, with and without rest, they are two completley different workouts, last time we did it with 3mins rest and it was the worst workout in terms of the "after burn"
post workout pain, it took me a long time to get back up off the floor, also it was with un-anchored situps with sucked also

Comment #49 - Posted by: crossfitfife at May 26, 2009 12:56 AM

I have been doing CF since early '06, and have done my share of tough workouts, but after the workout, no matter how depleted I feel, I cant let myself lay down, think about it. If you lay down to catch your breath after a workout, then what are training yourself to do? What kind of muscle memory are you building? Try walking and focusing on your breathing. That is functional, not collapsing. Just my thoughts.

On 3rd set, accidentally stopped watch somewhere b/w situps and squats. Estimated round tiem and kept going. Feel guilty on 4th round after killing 5th round like that. Need to push through on sets. Biggest weakness right now is mental and pushing through the pain ie knowing the difference b/w gassed and muscle exhaustion and pushing through each in their own way. Get some.

Each round was under eight minutes. It's first day of Bar Exam review course, so had to jet out of gym early. Still believe this WOD is one of the most difficult.

In the Journal article, Kelly's Koffin, Larry Gallagher talks about a dynamic version of step aerobics, I'm assuming from the article he's referring to box jumps where the height is unchallenging and almost becomes a routine. He mentions that he sees "step aerobics with weights" amongst trainers'.

Can anyone elaborate a little more in detail what step aerobics with weight would be? Possibly a comparison between a wod with step aerobics with weight and wod that uses weight and helps you achieve a "bigger engine"?

Just under 30 min total, so
Avg. of ~6 min. per set.

I did Murph + the 5K yesterday, Barbara today, and overdid the 1 rep max WOD the other day (once I found my max I did about four to five sets with that weight) - now my back hurts so bad I can hardly walk :( But the tendinitis in my left arm is suddenly almost completely gone :-S

I'm really concerned with some of the dogma finding its way into crossfit. Seems there is an underlying tone that if anybody questions it...they don't know what they are talking about.

And there is some narcisstic tendencies creeping in. The "we are better because we do crossfit" attitude.

Not meant to offend anyone by posting this...just verbalizing a concern that has been developing.

My thoughts are that Crossfit is good enough that it can handle any questions that get thrown its way. Its very thorougly developed...even if the majority of people who practice it don't realize how much so.

Up until...recently...I've felt that crossfit was all inclusive. But I do sense an undercurrent of extremism...that I guess is inevitable...as it is inevitable in any sport, faction, or group thats ever been put together.

I am down a belt size and my kipping pull up went from 5 to 25. Just wanted to thank you guys for helping me get into shape. I can't wait to post my progress in another 5 weeks.

Comment #122 - Posted by: Sheldon at May 26, 2009 8:18 AM

Hey, i'm real new and still trying to figure out the site, with today's WOD does each round consist of 20,30,40,50 of each exercise, or are you supposed to split up the exercise reps per round (like is the 20,30,40,50 the max reps you do for the entire workout?)

I'm in pretty good shape, but i would have to take little breaks for each exercise to hit those reps. Or am I just supposed to adjust the reps or take off rounds?

Finished Barbara rx'd in an hour and 6 minutes (really long time). I went slow since I don't want to throw up at the gym, and I don't yet have the stamina to go nonstop. Last time I did Barbara I nearly threw up after the 2nd round and stopped there.

I was just glad to finish it really... I'm so sore already.

@ prole,

Totally agree. I like your style man, your references to Orwell were not lost on me. Its good to hear some charged literary references here. A friend of mine and I see sports with extreme exertion as being a celebration of what nietzche calls the "death of the hero" in his essay "The Birth of Tragedy." When I exert myself fully in crossfit there's the feeling of oblivion as your body must dispel all thoughts in order to perform at maximum power. It's the blissful realization of oblivion that all great pursuits ultimately reveal. Your thoughts?

im a crossfit newbie. I didnt time my splits, but im pretty sure my last round was faster than my 4th like i've noticed on a lot of people's split times. i wonder how that is. #178 Luke:

Use a pair of dumbbells as anchors, works like a charm. If you don't have dumbbells, put your feet under the edge of the couch or your easy chair...maybe a couple of bags of concrete, anything...this is not rocket science :-)

If all else fails, do crunches. Just record whatever you did so you have something to compare to next time.

Get creative brother and get after it!

Congratulations on an amazing time!
I’ve followed your posts on results with body weight work outs and it would be great too see a video of you performing some of the WODs on the main site. Truly inspirational.

I have a bad cold for the first time in years so I’ve had to take it easy for a few days and no WOD for me yet.
Last time I did Barbara was on Jan 1st and active time then was 14:13 (total time 26:13 including rests) with a 2:11 first round and the following rounds quite exactly 3 min each.

I think your 8:41 in active time must be pretty close to the record on this one. Has anyone seen a faster performance? And congrats on the PR round of 1:38!!

Tried this after a Muay Thai class with 4min worth of squat and holds for conditoning at the end. After I cooled down from the class I started the WOD. The pull-ups I tried full extension, no kips just all the way down and back up to my chin at least. I couldn't get 20 in a row without stoppingto change grips and/or recover. Push-ups I barely made, I also do them full extension all the way down and back up full range, and Sit-ups couldn't do with out some swing. This was my first time doing Barbara so I threw time out the window and just focused on mechanics for this one. Definetely alot of room for improvement!

I use the BrandX "Barbara Lite" scaling because it allows me to complete all or most of the reps of each exercise set. I thought that was better than scaling to 3 or 4 full rounds.

This WOD is the only one that's ever left me feeling like I had the flu, the first time I did it I had to lay down in my car for an hour before I thought it was safe to drive.

Wow you guys, how can you finish this one?

22 male 108kg. Actually I might be more like 107,5kg now cause I've been working out and stuff you know. It's hard to tell that I've lost weight but I probably did. I'll weigh in on friday and tell you guys I'm really exited!!! So lets say 108kg plus minus 1kg you know. I still got some of the good stuff though, don't worry HEHEHE!!!

I did three rounds cause this one was soooo hard. All repetitions were halved cause this one was soooo hard. I used 25kg support in pull ups (because of the good stuff HEHEHE!!!). My times were 2:26, 2:47 and 2:12(in the last one I didn't do the pullups, some biatches were using the pullup machine).

I'm really looking forward to thursday guys and gals!

You guys are totally sooo awesome!!

Crossfit rocks!!!

My wife, Susan, ordered "Every Second Counts" as a gift to me, the second it was available for purchase. We received it this afternoon in the mail and promptly watched it. “Every Second Counts” is hands down the best movie I've seen in years! Raw, emotional, intense, and inspiring! I will be watching this movie again, and again, and again! Kudos to Seven, Carey, Coach Glassman, Dave Castro, and all the CrossFit stars, like Big John Welbourn and Josh Everett who made it so powerful! I encourage everyone to buy it - it's a keeper, and you won't be disappointed!

Huge drop between 1st and 2nd rounds. Would have liked to stay around 3:00. Raced through everything except the sit-ups. Spent probably 2 minutes each round after rd1 just trying to crank them out -- not sure why they were such a weak point today, but it showed.

Felt dehydrated and dead afterwards. Spent 25 minutes trying to keep my lunch down.

Good stuff :)

Pull ups broken into doubles and triples after the first set of 12.

This evening was my turn at the Fire Department Physical Ability test. Our department test is similar to the Fire Fighter Challenge, but quite a bit simpler.

Here's the rundown:

1) 1 flight stair climb, with 50 lb hose pack
2) Raise a hose bundle with a rope, 1 story
3) Hydrant station
4) Fan carry - 50 feet
5) 100 foot charged hose drag
6) 175 lb dummy drag - 75 feet

My time: 3 min 16 sec

Not bad, but certainly room for improvement.

17;11 *BUT* did banded pull-up rounds 1,2&half of 3 and switched then to jumping due to shoulder pain and the band cutting into my stomach (can i just kip already?!!) and girl push ups all the way through due to shoulder pain. Me thinks i need to move to slower times with real pull ups and push ups - IM SOOOOO READY!!

All sets unbroken (except for squats.. I usually do them in 20, 15, 15 with a few seconds break inbetween) until last set of pushups. Decided to take only 3 rounds when I was doing the second one, but after the third my arms were hurting so much I wouldnt be albe to continue anyways....

I'll be careful how I put this, because I'm sure there are some freaks out there that would prove me wrong, but I'd like to see proof of multiple sub(2)minute rounds of "Barbara". Considering that would require maintaining a pace of 140 repitions in less than 120 seconds including change-over of positioning, that's hard to believe anyone could maintain that pace. Even if you sacrificed proper form (short stroke) to maintain such a pace, that barely seems possible.

Guess it's also possible that I'm a slacker and just need to step it up a bit!

First time doing this.... think my body was not ready... slept for 24 hours straight before this one due to some really little sleep Ive had during the last few days.

1 round 2:37
2 round 4:00
went half through the 3 round before having to sit down and quit. Felt sick almost threw up, and I was close to fainting...

Hope to get through this one next time with some more sensible sleep and eating beforehand...

Aether tron 165,

The type of oblivion you speak of (dispelling all thoughts in an act of exertion or creation)can be great. But, many great pursuits (often the ones I'm most fond of personally) involve a great deal (perhaps days, weeks, years) involves squarely bringing thoughts before your mind. Playing the Well Tempered Clavier and singing Tristan and Isolde both require a heck of a lot of conscious thinking in the preparation.

This sucked. Each round was a good 30 seconds slower than my last time. I had a big dinner and a few glasses of wine last nite. I guess that had an impact.
The good news is I was able to kip all 20 pull ups in the first round unbroken. Pleased about that at least.

I am a moron. I did this, as I always have done... NO REST BETWEEN SETS. Until my wife informed me there is supposed to be 3min between rounds. I can't wait to do it again and see what I'll total w/ rest. 3 minutes seems a bit much though, no?

Squats felt much better. Slower pace. No breaks. Maintained lumbar curve! Good job pushing on pushups. Feet a little closer on situps uses middle of abs. Helps to pull myself up.

Figured this was a safe WOD to do while training the Raw World PL competition:

Bench press:

165x4x3, pause on chest first rep each round.

10 minute break. Barbara:

2:27 - No breaks
2:32 - No breaks
2:42 - Two quick pushup breaks
2:54 - Four quick pushup breaks
2:55 - Four quick pushup breaks

Frog kick style kipping pullups, chest to deck/full elbow extension pushups, feet anchored under couch situps (couch pulling up every rep!) and just below parallel/full hip extension squats. No Dynamax ball to get that extra bounce....

Babs is a mean ole hag. I wanted to quit during this, and I felt like crap after this - closest I've come to pukie yet. First two rounds of pullups and pushups unbroken (PR). All squats unbroken. I need to find a way to get through pushups and situps more quickly on later rounds.
