The last three really wrecked me. "Twins" had me on the floor. I'm glad for a CFT. Only problem is my Press is always very weak. My shoulders take awhile to get into the groove. What would be a good pre-workout for that and not cheat? Its supposed to be 1, 2 then MAX.

I just saw Every Second Counts on DVD, Sevan, Carey, Lauren, Greg and yes even Dave Casto, thank you so very much for filming and producing this Masterpiece.
I knew the result before hand and I already new that the last year games were a shocker, but I found myself standing, screaming, laughing and cheering psychotically at the top of my lungs in anticipation for the outcome. I love my community and I am so very proud to be a part of it.

I really need to get to a Running Cert. I try to POSE but it takes so much work to re-condition your brian to tell your body how to run efficiently, that I always revert to my cr@ppy form when it comes time to hit a run hard as part of a WOD.

Ok so let me get this straight:

You can do warm-ups and 1 progression and then 3 attempts for the CFT for each exercise?

Any links to help out with the progression to the 3 attempts?

It was pure madness yesterday at the Northeast Regional Qualifier, I just wanted to say thanks for letting me come down and help out. I think this is an awesome privelige to be around the very best from our community, the battles that raged during all the WODs were epic... just wait until some of those pictures come out. standing. I've seen a couple ways, but the general acceptance (correct me anyone if I'm wrong) is that you do 3 "sets" - so 1-1-1, then 1-1-1, then 1-1-1 to figure out your max. Record just the highest weight for each and the total, for your CrossFit Total. Go HEAVY and maintain form. Search the exercise demos for explanations on each. Adrian Bozeman has a good set of videos on the overhead press progression (shoulder press, push press, push jerk). 3-2-1-GO!

Hey guys...rookie Crossfitter here. I love the CrossFit workouts though. I work as a Corrections officer for the DoC, and I love the functional fitness level that CrossFit provides.

Just wondering, I don't have access currently a gym. I am signed up at one, but this is the middle of my work-week, and I wouldn't be able to make the gym until late Monday afternoon. I do, however, have a set of BowFlex SelecTech dumb bells.

Would it be at all feasble to maybe do the CrossFit Total using the max I can on the Dumb-bells for as many reps as possible, or would that not work?

Just trying to figure out what I could do on my own terms when I get home this morning. Thanks all.

Well, CF'ers are actually big proponents of weight lifting shoes for lifting heavy stuff off of the floor.

You don't have to follow a rule about how you get to your max. Personally I think 1-1-1 is way too little. Say I were going for a 350 squat, I would probably do Bar x5, 135x5, 225x4, 275x3, 315x1, 325x1, 350x1 or something like that. I guess you could say warm-up first then do 3 singles, where the second single is your previous PR or something. Lots of ways to go about it.

Last time I got 335/170/330. I am absolutely horrible at deadlifting for some reason.

Thanks for looking out for me...I am in 17th place going into today's WOD. WOD time is 10am for me-I'll give it hell!

The 95# thruster/burpee WOD damn near killed me and rowing is OK-not great. Rowed an 8:21 which is a 29 second PR.

Sunday musings...

1) It's better to want what you have.

2) Re-entry. "Lovely Daughter" is home from college, our first post-freshman year home re-entry ("The Heir", noticing that Ohio is still flat, stayed in Denver after his 1st year). No matter how sweet the child or how brilliant the Mom, it's always a bumpy landing...

3) Recovery. It's always necessary to listen to your body, especially so if you are a Crossfitter. For all of the advice I've given about this over the years it's incredible how tone deaf I can be when it comes to listening to my OWN body. I'm on a break now, at least 2 weeks late. Knucklehead...

4) Re-entry and Recovery. When I was a high school senior my football coach became my friend after the season had ended. Only 10 or 12 years my senior, Cat was still single and for the next 4 or 5 years we spent quite a bit of my home time together. There are quite a few articles in the Memorial Day papers this morning, some about the difficulties encountered by our servicemen and women when they return from deployment; that's got me to thinking about Coach Cat.

My friend Chris, Coach Cat, and I were having a couple (dozen) beers one summer night when Cat had a rather scary "flashback" to the jungles of Viet Nam. Turns out as a young 2Lt his squad got cut off from support and he was on his own, leading his men out of the jungle. I remember him sobbing that night, choking out "I can't believe what I had to do, what I did to get us out." Stunned, Chris and I gently steered him to bed at a buddy's house. We drove home in silence.

For after all, what can you say? What can someone like me, never a minute "in country", say to someone at a time like that? Indeed, even in a non-crisis moment, how does one respond, how does one express understanding and gratitude to one who has done what needed to be done "there"? Papers this morning are awash with stories and commentaries of a nation's citizens not at war. Of empty, meaningless gestures and expressions of "thanks" and "appreciation" and "support". Is this true? Are we who are here, so safe and so far behind the line, are we that shallow and insincere?

I confess that I just do not know the answer to that question. Perhaps neither I nor anyone else ever will. Here's what I think is different now, though, from those days of my youth spent drinking with a friend who'd done his duty and returned to face both his countrymen and his demons--now I think about this generation's Coach Cats every day, and I think about how to express my understanding, my empathy, my gratitude every day. And I hope that I am not unique. I hope that the columnists are wrong.

In the end tomorrow is just a day off. When we are a country with men and women ON the line Memorial Day is every day of the year.

I gotta find Cat's phone number.

This morning I will do a WOD I designed and named for my kitty who passed away yesterday, Coon. She was 15 years old so she had a long healthy life full of joy. For most of my life that I can remember she has always been there (I'm 22). I found her as a pregnant stray when I was in 3rd grade.

When I was a child I use to have weekend sleep-overs with my friends who lived up the block. Coon, my cat would always follow me up to their house, and wait all night on the neighbors porch and would follow me home the next day... She had her litter of kittens on my feet at night as I slept in my bed at age 12. She has slept under my arm every night until I left for college. I fell asleep to purring every night, no exceptions, even if it took me over an hour to fall asleep.

I have been living 2 hours away at college for the past 4 years. In June when I graduate I am moving to a house that allows pets. The plan was that she was finally going to get to move in with me. I was so excited to sleep with her tucked under my arm again. But she never made it to her new house. Yesterday my mom called took her into the vet because she wasn't eating and had labored breath. The vet found a huge mass of cancer in her kidney putting pressure on her lunges and stomach. My mom called to tell me and I dropped everything to drive home to Portland. She was home from the vet in the lazy-boy chair sitting. The vet was expecting us, so I gathered up her and took her back for her final visit. I held her as she left.

She was an amazing childhood pet. I miss her so much. In her remembrance I created a WOD that incorporates my 5 favorite movements. Strength is my favorite (I have a powerlifting background), so I gave it a strength bias. It is named "Noble Beast" because that was a nickname I gave her. She took on dogs 4 times her size.

Today I will be doing "Noble Beast" in her memory.

FRAT/NEQ post

Fitting today is the CFT. While yesterday may have been a rest day for the .com set folks in the Northeast were hitting it hard both on the weights, C2, and the floor at the Northeast qualifiers in Albany. Check out http://crossfitneq.com/ for the lastest.

Today I decided to go for a Hero workout. I went with badger in honer of all our fallen soldiers. I got it in 51:28 but that was doing

and 1 mile run on the first two rds and 800 meters on the third.

Im sure that we will do a Hero work out tomorrow but as an active duty soldier I felt like doing this today for all the troops and ill be proud to do another tomorrow.

It felt good. I have'nt lifted that heavy in at least 15 years. I could have squated more but I did not have a spotter. I wore a belt on all lifts.I'm not sure if that's right or not, but better safe than sorry.

I ended up only getting 3 rounds in. I just could not do anymore muscle-ups. Got the first rep of every rope climb round legless last 2 reps were with legs.

Just wondering if any MMA fans caught the mention of crossfit during last nights UFC. When speaking about Matt Hughes during his walkout, Joe Rogan said something to the effect of "Matt is looking in phenomanal shape, he has been training hard, doing a ton of Crossfit....." I thought it was pretty cool. And if it is true, he did look in better shape than he has in alot of previous fights.

I did hear the mention of CrossFit when Matt Hughes walked out. Very cool.

Crazy day for me. I participated in a fitness competition at my gym with gym regulars a few fellow CrossFiters from local affiliates. Along with a body fat measurement there were 6 events with a 2 minute max rest in between:
-sit-ups as many as possible in 1 minute
-max push-ups
-max strict pull-ups, close/inside grip
-max distance on rower in 5 minutes
-max reps w/ 70% of body on bench press
-timed 1 mile course on "Espresso" exercise bike.
Somehow I managed to tie for 2nd place.

Then I did the CFT:
back squat: 355lbs PR
shoulder press: 185lbs PR
deadlift: 495lbs PR
New PR CFT: 1035lbs
I am ready to sleep now...

I have a funny story for everyone. I was just at one of the local parks here in town working on muscle up progressions with my rings. While I was setting them up over a high tree limb some lady called the cops on me because she thought I was trying to hang myself!! Two cops came over to me and figured I was doing Crossfit so we all talked for awhile and then they left and let me continue on so they were pretty cool about it. But I still can't believe what happened

Worked some skills practice into my warm up:

Muscle Up Progressions, Rings at 61", 10 reps
Double Unders, 20 reps
GHD Situps, 20 reps
Back Extensions, 20 reps

Then did CFT but emphasized perfect form this time around:

Back squat, 1 rep, 225/260/275/295(F)/295(F)
Shoulder press, 1 rep, 135/145/150/155(F)
Deadlift, 1 rep, 225/295/405/425(F)/425(F)

Total 830 (4.69xBWT)

Short of my 090410 PR of 875 lbs. Lost about 30 lbs from last time on my squat. Previously I went below parallel but not down to a D-Ball. This time, I went down to a D-Ball with a good lumbar curve. Just missed 295 lbs twice. From now on all of my squats are down to a D-Ball.

Also did the following:

Overhead squat, 1 rep, 35/45/115(F)/115/125(PR)
Front squat, 1 rep, 135/225/260(PR)
Bench press, 1 rep, 135/185/225/235(PR)

Once again, all squats were down to a D-Ball with good form. This is the first time I have gone heavy on the bench since college (30 years ago). My PR back then was about 270 lbs. Nevertheless, I'm going to call 235 lbs my new PR. I would like to get my bench press back up to 270 again in the next year or two.

My son Luke (m/13/125) also did CFT today:

Back squat, 1 rep, 135/155/185(F)/165(PR)
Shoulder press, 1 rep, 75/95(PR)/100(F)
Deadlift, 1 rep, 135/185/225(PR)

Total 485 (3.88xBWT)

One month in cross-fit love it!!!! Little concerned w/Deadlift though tried 375 got a couple inches off the ground then felt a sharp pain in the lower back - didn't feel/hear a pop though. Probably need to review my form... Any comments on lower back injury symptoms from deadlift? From what I can tell I think I slightly tore a muscle. Still able to do back extensions & bend over w/slight pain but overall feels good like I'm stretching....Planning on doing many back extentions & low weight deadlifts w/high reps to work it out & improve form any other advice would be appreciated....

This was my 1st "CrossFit Total".

I haven't really set any PRs in back squats or shoulder presses so I know now what my PRs are for them! I knew my PR for 3 rep in back squats was 225 but I had no idea with shoulder press. I never experimented with it until now.

I was in such a hurry because I got to the gym late and the gym was going to close soon so I had to deal with what I had and not be greedy.

I think I spent a little bit too much time on the back squats and had to rush everything else.

Back Squat-285

I didn't spend too much time with the shoulder press. You can either lift it or you can't but I do wish I had a little bit more time with it.

Shoulder Press-115

The gym was about to close in 5 minutes. I did a DL here and there but I was so out of time that I just went for a PR+10 pounds...355...2xBW

850 - 1st CFT.

Back Squats 255, 280, 300. Could have gone heavier, my wife was a barely willing and uncomfortable spotter.

Shoulder press: 155 & done. Down from a PR of 170 and definitely the weak link here for me. Last 2 days spent swinging a pickaxe and pulling weeds didn't help the shoulders either.

Deadlift 355, 375, 395. All came up pretty easy, will start higher next time.

To my surprise, there were only small plates in kilos, which led me to do a kilo-only CFT and convert afterwards. ARGH! Just kidding.

Playing catchup. Did Barbera yesterday. Totally failed... Did crossfit total this morning and will try to get the 5k in tonight.

WU: 20 clean and jerks, 135 lbs, dynamic stretching

Back squat: 245#. My legs felt fine it was my back that held me back.
Shoulder press: 115#.
Deadlift: 221#. Once again my back was definately the limiting reagent on this one.

I have been eating total crap lately and I really think it is effecting my performance. Really pretty bummed out about my go at Barbera yesterday and then this today. Feel like I have made no gains and in fact sliding backwards in several areas since I started crossfit.

I started a SS cycle in November, which lasted 2 months before old shoulder issue came back strong preventing me from continuing. Going to get it scoped next month. Did the CFT just to see how it felt and where I was. The squat PR surprised me. DL wasn't terrible, but a bit weak. I was happy to tie my pre-SS press - shows no gains, but at least no real strength loss, since I haven't been doing a lot of functional shoulder movement, just rehab exercises.

I used to lift heavy a couple years ago. Then I discovered jiu jitsu. Now Crossfit. I haven't done a heavy lift in about a few months. I was happy and disappointed at the same time. Next time over 800 for sure.
