Man, pretty easy day for explanation here!

To the newbies:
Pretty straight forward. Do 100 of each exercise, no partitioning. So finish one before you begin the next.
The only thing some of you may have to sub are the Pull Ups. You can do that various ways. Use bands, sub in jumping and increase the reps (or keep them the same too), etc. Only rule is, NO NEGATIVES! 100 pull ups is enough, 100 negative pull ups...is ridunkulous.
Hopefully that is good enough for today :) Anyone can feel free to jump in and add something of course if i missed something of importance.

That picture makes me sad. Typical Army PT, a lot of Soldiers standing around cold doing no work...of the roughly 50 Soldiers in the picture 0 have a good sweet going, 1 appears to be actually doing work and one other appears to be tired, most are standing around board... It is challenging to designing a workout that gets a unit all actively involved.

Sit ups are at your own discretion (abmat, anchored, un-anchored, even GHD if you're a nut). Just make sure you keep record of such things as to have a fair and accurate comparison next time this sweet little gal pops up :)

Hey guys, I'm after some advice or direction.

Inspired from this year's Aussie qualifiers I'm going to enter next year. I think my met con is good enough to compete with the best but know my strength just isn't up there with the best guys I saw that day. eg I'm not quite at 2x deadlift yet and my jerk is barely bodyweight.

I was thinking about going 'off main site' for three months or so to really focus on improving my strength.

I realise this is more than a little counter Crossfit methodology but would really value the perspective of people who have either done the same thing or done 'extras' for the same reason.

Are there any journal articles etc?

CJ, what Eric was talking about was when you perform the pull-up, do not slowly lower yourself to the start position. The goal, if kipping, is to push yourself down and forward to perform the next kip. I you are doing just hanging pull-ups, God bless you if you do, then lower yourself to start smoothly before the next rep.

Oh, great WOD, last time I had to break my rounds into 6-8 reps for pull-ups. Now that I can kip, cannot wait!

As Eric's big sister, I get to step in and remind everyone of SCALING. Use BRandX. Go to Main Site(!),click on Start here, then BrandX. Choose your level, from buttercups on up to the Porch. Big Dogs do it as RX'ed (as prescribed). Note in your comment or workout journal which level you choose, and any modifications used, so that NEXT time you can accurately compare.

E.G.
04/19/09 Angie @ Pack level
75 PUs- band assist (next time you may be able to do w/o)
75 pus- on toes (last time was on knees)
75 SUs- anchored w/ab mat
75 sqs- unbroken

Angie's Scaling:
Pack:
Same rules apply for form.
50-75 Pull ups
50-75 Push ups
50-75 Sit ups
50-75 Squats
Sit ups should either be Ab Mat or full range anchored sit ups

Puppies and Buttercups:
For time:
20 Pull-ups or 25 Beginner or Assisted Pull ups
20 Push-ups or 30 Box Push ups or 35 Wall Push ups
20 Sit ups (do not do crunches)
20-50 Squats (depending on ability)

Do not think you MUST do it as RX'ed. Do not think you are a being a baby or that you need to prove something. If this is your first ANGIE, err on the side of caution (and self preservation) and SCALE, even if its just to 75 reps. If you are new, SCALE. If you are sick, have been sick, are thinking you are getting sick, are hungover, SCALE. I know the idea of "git 'er done" is rampant and CF peer pressure is contagious (uh, 5 rounds of FGB, anyone?) but be realistic.

Broke everything into sets of 10. I alternated roman chair and anchored situps 10/10, except I skipped one set of roman chair and did one extra anchored for fear of rhabdo.

Last time I did this. it was 2:30 slower. Pullups took longer last time(I was on a higher bar then, so they were harder with jumping). Situps were slower this time due to roman chair. Pushups improved by a minute & I think I had an easier time with them overall. Squat was a minute slower this time, but I think I went lower this time.

Sunday musings...

1) Opera singers give and get more out of one syllable than any American Idol does in an entire album.

2) The Never List. I used to have one of these. You know, things I never have to try unless forced to. Mrs. Bingo was teasing me the other day while I was slicing some tofu into soup. "Wasn't tofu on your 'Never List' when we met? You wouldn't even say the word--you called it 'oofaught'!" Back then my list had things like war, cocaine, cowboy boots, and other sillier stuff I can't remember.

Mrs. Bingo was teasing me and gently reminding me of how narrow-minded and certain I was as a younger man, while reminding me of how well she has "raised" me. I have to admit, AGAIN, that she is right, that I have had more fun by shrinking my "Never List" than I would have by expanding it. Of course the real "Nevers" will stay that way, but maybe think about re-visiting your own "Never List" with fresh eyes.

FWIW, I would still look silly in a bow tie and cowboy boots...

3) Progeny. We've had quite a few births chez Crossfit recently, and we have some twins on the way soon. For most of us, and for most of our lives, we all share something quite special with "S'morelle" and the JroCk "Pebble"--we are all sons or daughters for as long as we have a Mom or a Dad.

I am at that stage of life where my friends are starting to lose their parents; I have a wake to attend this afternoon. Whether or not we choose to acknowledge it, being a son or a daughter is a significant part of who each one of us is as an individual. For some it's good and for others it is certainly less so, but we can't escape the reality of our "son-ness" or "daughter-ness".

Until we are no longer a son or a daughter. Until we are set adrift by the loss of our last remaining parent, awash in the memory of being someone's child yet no longer engaged in the daily acts of being a son or being a daughter. Some have spoken about a sense of "orphanhood", an unexpected emptiness in the time-space both ahead and behind.

Blessedly I am still a son, still in possession of both parents (or possessed by both parents; Grambingo still considers her son a work in progress). We never know when that day will come when we, too, will become "orphans". I have enjoyed being someone's son, and I think today is a great day to remember that.

A great day to let my Mom and Dad know that.

Much slower than normal, but my healing hand requires I stop frequently during the pullups and pushups. 50 consecutive kippping pullups followed by sets of 5s finish the 100. Broke the pushups into sets of 10s.

I don't think I ever want to do kipping pullups again. On number 83 it tweaked on the way up. no more. I could barely do 50 lb pulldowns slowly after that for the rest.

1. Should the pull-ups be Kipping pull-ups? I remember seeing somewhere that they were the "default" pull-ups
2. Can I mix everything together or do I do all 100 pull-ups before proceeding to the sit-ups and so on?
3. The squats are just normal no weight, no overhead squats right? Should I use a box to go down to?

Andrew in crossfit the pull-ups are always kipping pull-ups unless the Coach said deadhang but if he just say pull-ups you have to kip you need the kip to reach a good metanolic condition state you will see a lot of deadhang in some coments most of them injured crossfitters but you are 100% you HAVE to kip!!!

I will help my mama in the garden, and listen to my pops ramble about the Jets, what a crook Corzine is and what would I think about walking the Spring Lake 5 Mile Run with him :) He hardly says I love you but thats ok. He stands in their street to direct me in backing out of their driveway (even tho' I have been driving for 20 yrs and their street is deserted). That says enough. I am happy he does that.

I find that I stand around killing too much time recovering if I can't partition. My form suffers big, especially with pull ups, if I'm forced to keep banging them out when my body is finished. I also tend to pull something or get injured when I'm trying to force reps with nothing left.

I know there is a method to the madness, but why can't one partition and go on to the next thing and let the lactic acid work its way out while doing squats instead of watching the clock?

Was shooting for 6 sets of 3, but right hip started getting sore. Actually listened to my body for once, and did not continue.

Have not had anything to eat today except for 4 eggs at 8 AM. Don't feel like eating much today for some unknown reason, so I won't. Maybe today is a good day to do an intermittent fast.

Great workout, been doin Crossfit for 6 months now, second time doing Angie, first time broke exercises into sets, didn't finish 100 pullups before moving to pushups, time 16:37, this time did as rx'd, 19:49. Have about 10-12 people doing crossfit daily at the gym(globo), it is spreading like wildfire, I am easily in the best shape of my life, thanks a million Coach. I am a Trainer by day, and consistently work Crossfit elements into client workouts daily. Cant wait for tommorow!!!!

Basically broek them up into 25 rep sets. Pull ups got me though. first set was 20 reps, finished out the 25 feeling strong, but by the second round of pullups I was doing jmping pullups and doing five in between sets of squats and push ups.
Got it done though.

Last time I did "Angie" I couldn't straighten my arms for 5 days. I learned a valuable lesson and made sure I was did a much longer warm-up before starting this time!

Ripped off a nice dime-sized callous on my left hand at about 75 pullups. Painful, but didn't slow me down too much. Pushups and situps still a struggle, but I think they both went a little faster than last time. Was shooting for sub-25, but just couldn't do the squats straight through. Had to take a couple mini-breaks, which set me back a bit.

Pullups mediocre as well. Chin was above bar but my grip is awful... after 20 reps it felt like my skin was going to tear off like that guys face in poltergeist, so I had to grab the gloves. Working on going without gloves at all.

I chose to do only 75 pullups b/c i had never done chest to bar and i thought i would tear my hands up doing 100, and i didnt want to do that. well, i guess i should have done 74 b/c i tore a callus on number 75! had to take a minute to clean up the blood. pushups going chest to deck were a lot harder too. i dont know whether to be happy with this time or not.

Right shoulder impingement is still making pull-ups near to impossible so I did one arm assisted ring pull-ups. Push-ups were getting to me until I lowered the rings to about an inch off the ground and was able to adjust my hands and shoulder position so that it caused little discomfort. Yes, the dynamic plane made the push-ups harder, but I'll take the muscle fatigue over the should stabbing any day of the week. Butterfly abmat situps and squats to med ball no issues or adjustments.

Today I wore my vest again and was almost 2 minutes slower at 47:07, Guess I will just have to do some more practice and try to hit the WODs harder. Of course I realize some days are just gonna be like that.

This is the end of week of CrossFit for me and this was a doozy. Going from the pull-ups (where I'm still working on getting kipping down) to the push ups was brutal.

As Rxed: 23:44

Bench Presses, 135/185/205/215(PR)

Need to work on keeping my shoulders active during overhead squats. Back squats felt pretty good, but I need to work on my depth. Got below parallel, but not down to a D-Ball. Felt as if I could have put up 5-10 lbs more on my bench presses.

Doing this with a torn left palm was killer. The bar at my gym as so much human hand grease on it that it's almost impossible to hold on past 20 pull ups. I broke this one down into blocks.

5 rounds

Round 1: 20 PLU, 20 PU, 20 SU, 20SQ
Round 2 - 5 10 PLU, 20 PU, 20 SU, 20SQ

Last 40 pull-ups broke them down into sets of 10 to finish off.

I think I need to drop down to 165 before these ever get any easier. That and just practice on technique. My kip felt like crap. I never do well on the bar at the gym I go to.

Feet fixed to 1.5 pood kettlebell for situps. It helps to try to pull the KB with your heels towards your butt.

One week of the program for vacation. Did two long mountainbike rides each with about 4000 vertical feet of elevation gain, but didn't feel half as tired afterwards as after Angie today.

Pu's were better, I did 15 dead hangs first go. After that I did as many dh's as I could then I did kipping each time. I could usually get at least 2 dh's and then kip for 4 or 5 more. Situps were unbroken to 80. Pushups were broken at 45,68,85, 96 nose to the ground each time. Squats were broken twice, but can't remember exactly, I think it was 55 and 85.

Exertion headaches are associated with a c1 or c3 vertabrae misalignment. Get an x-ray and then get adjusted. If you are misaligned, then you will need at least a month heal the pinched nerve, but you should feel some immediate relief.

Thought I would try push ups first, did those in about 4 minutes

Then went to sit ups, which I now know I am weak at, did 55 and then resorted to crunches for time's sake.

Moved to Squats and busted those out fast, easily my strongest "event".

Then on to ... the... pull....ups... always my weakest part. But I did 40 jump pull-ups (hard right after squats) and moved to normal pull ups for the last 60.

I was continuosly stopped by people I knew, so My time was somewhere between 24-30 minutes, but really have no idea. It was a good work out either way. I am pretty fatigued. I should have attacked it as Rx'ed, doing pull ups last seemed harder than normal, but thats probably good for my body, just not for my time :(

Not sure why I was 1.5 min longer than last time several months ago (I suspect that I cheated, but NOT this time). Ended up with 19+ min. I am disappointed except for the fact that I seem to have done great for my size. Split up the pulls into 4x10+12x5, then 2x20+10x6 for the pushes, then 5x20 for the sit-ups, then 5x20 for the squats. Everything needs work, so I'll probably work on more calisthenics then power-lifting when I am screwing around before/after workouts.

Have a tight shoulder thing going on that runs down my right arm so pull-ups took forever.

Holy Christ I must be missing something or better said should go back on the porch. I thought my 22:40 Angie although not particulary fast or earth shattering was something I did not have to be too upset about. I figured top athletes would do this somewhere around let's say 14 minute marks. I read a couple of posts where Xfitters posted 10 minute marks and the attempt to go below?

I completed this in 28:50 but only did about 30 pull ups unassisted. The rest had about 80lbs of assist. I also did about 20 reps of 5 different ab exercises to get some oblique work in as well.

After two weeks off from working out (vacation and being Mr. Mom to my 5-month-old daughter -- a future CrossFitter, for sure) -- I did "Angie" as Rx'd. Ouch.

Pullups killed me, and at about 70 I had a rip on both hands. Pushups, as always, are much tougher than they seem. Situps, meh. Squats, whatever, concentrated on form and depth.

35:30, which is 3:36 slower than my best time.

I have newb question about kipping pull ups. I tryed FAQ but couldnt find the answer.

Can/may I do kipping pullups with the grip, where my palms are facing me? for some reason I cant coordinate my self doing kipping pull ups on the way they are made on demo videos. and it seems easyer when the grip is "palms facing me"

I did 5 sets of 20 here and this felt great. I've been doing CF for about a month now and I feel like I have the kipping pull-ups down preety good now which helps a lot. My muscular endurance has improved greatly since starting and my overall fitness level is definitely higher. Great stuff and thanks for all the support, just reading through the times before the workout has me pushing myself harder and harder each day.

You can, and as a newb "scaling" or substituting is definitely part of doing the workouts. However I would encourage you to over time learn to do the workouts with a "pull-up" grip vs the "chin-up" grip. The muscles involved are perhaps surprisingly different with this change of grip. The "chin-up" grip definitely recruits more of the bicep into the motion.

That said you often see WOD videos with participants changing their grip as they fatigue including using an "alternating grip", one chin-up/one pull-up.

To the person who said you hate seeing army guys stand around. The picture was taken during the monthly Lumberjack Crossfit competition. It consisted of 50m run, 30 pullups, 30 burpees, 50m run, 30 sdhp, 30 18in box jump, 30 65lb push press, 100 m run, then everything in reverse but with 20 reps. It was horrible, I almost passed out several times during the workout. Only select people did it after finishing slow motivational 6 mile run at a 9 min mile pace. Those days are only hard for the actual competitors. We do regular crossfit workouts pretty much every other day.
