"Real men and real women clean and jerk."
Love it!
Congratulations are in order for 2LT Daniel Spurrier, 2LT Daniel Gonski, 2LT Robert Silva and the rest of McDaniel ROTC Class of 2009. A job well done and it was a pleasure to work with you all. Keep up the hard work and keep crossfitting.
Cheers

Just a very quick post...
On the Rest Day Article. What I see as the main underlying issue implied by the article can be summed up by the question: as our technology improves to the point where it takes but a single individual (with a little money and determination) to build weapons capable of large scale damage - perhaps even home-made WMDs - should we sacrifice some of our freedom from surveillance by authorities in order to maximise our safety; and if so, by how much? Is our liberty that important? Or can we trust that all the people around us enough to preserve that liberty?
X-fitted about 2 years at a good box.
Recently got laid off, can't afford X-fit now, train solo.(was short order cook & did some charity delivering meals to low income seniors).
When I was at box some trained w/ some firemen.
They made x2-x2.5 my income.Plus they got full med.ins &dental, job security & guaranteed pension.
They were/are my friends and I miss working out with them.
At the box we were all equal and the only judge was the time on the stopwatch.
Later I realized there was ranking going on behind the scenes according to occupation. They get discount on monthly dues and Certs.????
COach B, nice video, cant wait to train with you!

It's very interesting to think about the good and bad implications of this. I don't know if the government needs any more surveillance power than what they've been allowing themselves, as I do not feel that they always have our best interests in mind. Government agencies are run by human beings with human flaws. On the other hand, this is the stuff that doomsday sci-fi movies are made of - a home-brewed virus that destroys most of humanity or something similar. Nothing is good or bad in and of itself. There will always be some new frontier for potential terrorists somewhere, so surveillance can only go so far. There are other things like cyber-terrorism that can have terrible effects on our society. I will simply take the stand of supporting these enterprising men and women and hope that they can keep a clean lab and not be the cause of doomsday!
happy rest day people. hope you enjoy the rest.
Bingo - enjoy the week off
The Chaplin of all Chaplins, why?...because he can do muscle-ups, amen!
Good job chaps, getting your cheeze eating mugg all over the main site. Hallelujah and Amen!
Interesting article. Here is my 'non-alarmist' prediction of what will happen in the very near future. Mind you, no one is breaking any existing laws by making this stuff - save for small stuff like possible trespass to collect sewer cultures and the like (I do not know the circumstance so don't jump on me yet) - It will be all 'fun and games until someone lets something closet-made loose on a subway or train or shopping center. And believe me it is only a matter of time until someone with an agenda other than normal does this. At that point, a completely different set of laws (which DO already exist and are referenced under the blanket title 'terrorism - foreign and/or domestic') will come into play. At that point you will see regulation added whether you like it or not. Think back...way back...it wasn't illegal to brew your our alcohol and sell it, or to make explosives in your own home. It wasn't illegal to figure out a way a look into someone else's computer without them knowing, it wasn't illegal to make a device that could play a series of tones into a pay phone to give you free phone calls. It wasn't illegal to possess anthrax (although you probably didn't want to) it wasn't illegal to carry around a load of AmFo in a ryder truck. For a time, you could even carry knives or guns on airplanes. For each of these there was, at the time, possibly/ probably a good honest reason for doing all of these things. BUT - someone took the next step and DID something with each of these situations that created the need for regulation and rules. Usually because something really bad happened. I have no problem with people doing something altruistic or having a hobby. And maybe one will actually come up with a cure for cancer or aids...But if there is the chance that one of them is going to cross that line between 'Fun' and 'Oh Crap' Isn't it a good idea to be AHEAD of the game before someone does something stupid THIS time?
I hit the crossfit footall WOD
Strenght WOD 5x3 power clean...185 pounds all the rounds
Rest 15 minutes then...
Daily WOD
10 rounds:

FRAT rules!!!
Wow Jeff Tucker, you look 10 years younger! What's your secret dude?
Crossfit Radio...Neil and JJ, where you at?
Happy rest day everyone :-)
Go Frat!
Nice story, but there are SO many much more real dangers in the world today this one shouldn't keep anyone up at night. Artificial life hasn't been created in well funded labs yet, let alone in a closet.
This is simple fear of the unfamiliar.
i usually do cardio on my rest day... but after the last two days, one of my arms wont straighten all the way, and my legs/butt are burning. thank god its a rest day tomorrow :)
cheers yall.
our chaplain will kick your chaplains ass
I love Crossfit!
My Shoulder Press and Push Press max both increased by 20 pounds in just 16 days! That seems remarkable to me.
5 days on has torn me a new one, though.
I'm so grateful for a rest day.
#5, Pete...
You'll find that many, many places offer discounts and specials to LE, FireFighters and Military members. It's not a new practice, just a way for many retailers and business owners to show appreciation for the men and women who risk their lives every day on the job. It's not necessarily a "ranking" issue, just a gesture of goodwill.
tommyhackenbruck (from yesterdays post)
I was your judge durring the MU-WallBall-SDHP. Holy crap that was awesome! I felt bad for making you do the last rep over but you still came in 1st for the wod even with the extra rep!
I was shocked when you didn't place.
I look forward to seeing you at the games man! If not this year then the next!
I hope you can get in with the video WOD!
PXT Cody! You ARE here!
DOin' ya proud brothuh...Just hit 2 Deadlift PR's (3rep PRs) and then did Michael from yesterday.

So...has anyone seen "Every Second Counts" yet? Would anybody like to post a review for the rest of us who haven't seen the movie?

Great video from Burgener. I love the quote: "You win competions with the clean & jerk. Real men, real women do the clean & jerk. And, that's how you become big, strong, powerful, quick."
So true given many of the qualifier workouts.

Just saw the movie last night! Canadian Premier put on by Firepower Training in Mississauga, it was great! Don't want to give anything away but an excellent documentary about the lives of a handful of elite crossfitters.
I can't wait till I get a copy of my own.
Runnning a couple of days behind. Took care of the "Twins" last night or rather they took care of me. Scaled a bit, first round did 40 inclined pushups for handstand pushups. Second round did 30 thrusters instead of 20.
750m row
40 inclined push ups
30 Thrusters 95#
20 chair pull ups

Just in case anyone tries to download "Every Second Counts" be warned you will probably end up with a movie about rodeo riding.
I waited 2 days in order to be very disappointed.

I heartily agree with carl's comment (#13). The articles speaks of synthetic DNA and assembling organisms as if it's the easiest of steps from one to the next. In reality, synthetic DNA has been around for quite a while, but artificial organisms, while a major focus of the biotech field, remain firmly in the future.
Now, is there the possibility of creating extremely virulent microbes? Sure. For all the "white hat" hackers out there, there are still enough "black hats" to give the world problems. We can only assume something similar may happen here in the future. This isn't a meth lab, though. You're not going to spot the smell (well, at least not as easily) or the iodine-stained windows from the street. Those coming under the yoke of government control would likely be those most public about their work and least likely to become a threat. Focusing on identifying threats based on supply orders (eg - what kind of DNA are they ordering?) would likely be the better way to go.
Decide for yourself how much more power you'd like to give the government over household hobbyists. I think it's pretty great that these folks are exercising their personal ingenuity and intellect in order to chase their goals. I'm lucky enough to have a job paying me to do that, so I can use my free time for other stuff, like CrossFit.
My first rest day, woo.
It was also my best time thus far!
no rest....rested yesterday, did 20 minutes of
95lb
thruster 5 reps
hang clean 7 reps
push press 9 reps
felt nice....
10 rounds
will pair yesterdays workout with tommorow....
no worries
m/24/210/6'3''
just got back from watching WOD# 1 @ the northeast qualifier:
AMRAP 12 min
5 thruster 135#
10 burpees
This workout absolutely crushed the field (approx 150 guys). Most thruster sets were broken on the 4th or 5th rounds and the top finishers in each heat were around 8 or 9 rounds. Before the event I overheard some competitors looking for "high teens" round totals.... the winner:
10 rounds 1 thruster
brutal.
go chaps! good job on the muscle up
F/22/5'6"/142
"Cindy Gone Bad"
1 min pullups
1 min pushups
1 min squats
1 min rest
5 rounds
85 pullups
50 pushups
250 squats
Total = 385
New pullup record: 22!!!
Regarding the article: Working on a hobby in your garage with equipment made at home, bought at a local store, or found on ebay. CrossFit! Couldn't that be DNA research too?

Mine came in the mail today. We will be watching it tonight.

#35 Jeff -
I was there too...The playing field was 179 guys and 58 women (don't forget the women!), although there were a few no shows... That was the longest 12 minutes ever and I was just a spectator! Fit Mom was in Heat #1 and when I heard "OK athletes, you are 4 minutes in" I thought, how in the world will these people be able to keep this up for twice as long...
Brutal is right!
damn, did anybody else read TFA and think "damn, that sounds like a really interesting hobby"?
active rest
1.5 hour hike at work
Spring Lake 5 Mile Run

It's sorta silly to worry about guys working in basements in America accidentally unleashing something as they work in their spare time with stuff they bought on eBay, when there are no doubt teams of professionals working round the clock in $10,000,000-$100,000,000 labs in Russia, China, Iran, Pakistan, Syria, and North Korea, just to make viruses to kill us.
No doubt a lot of thought has been given to this--one HOPES so, at any rate--but the issue, to me, is containment. Weaponized anthrax, for example, is basically something like nerve gas with a delayed reaction. You have to get hit to suffer. Smallpox and other diseases like weaponized ebola (as I recall, the Soviets developed something like that), are potential pandemics because they are contagious. For this reason, we have to have very good, sophisticated early alert systems; for example, in emergency rooms. We had an airborne early alert system in New York City until recently, when the Obama Administration--given their obviously obsessive concern with containing costs--decided to cut it. Maybe my math is bad, but if you spend a trillion, and cut a million, that is not how you balance budgets, is it?
Now, I saw "12 Monkeys", and I read the Andromeda Strain many years ago. There is much else in this genre, but it doesn't take long to get the point: bugs are all but untraceable, but it would take a superbug to create worldwide trouble.
However, given the potential hazard, I do think EVERYONE who is fooling around this stuff needs to be registered. I register every year to drive my car. If a cop stops me, I have to give him my drivers license. If I want to apply for a job, I need to provide my Social Security Card. If I want to carry a concealed firearm, I have to pay for the licence.
Given all of this, it is not unreasonable to have a preexisting list of people who COULD bioengineer bugs in this country. This is not the same as banning their work: that doesn't appear necessary, or likely even helpful at this point. And of course an attack could come from overseas. The technology has existed for some time, and if you want a good scare, read up on the Soviet's program some time.
Such a list, it seems to me, would be a common sense precaution. If we do see an outbreak, task one will be to prevent it from getting bigger. And part of that will involve gathering accurate information quickly.
And anyone who says such an attack is impossible is indulging in fanciful thinking. Certainly, it is also far from inevitable, but we need to remember that there are a lot of nuts in this world.
Barry,
Good point about how much we are already register for. However, similar to the gun debate, if a person means harm is he really going to bother with a license?
A license would only be useful in the prevention of possible accidental dangers, which in the case of bio-hacking is nil at this stage.
Well, my idea is simply to get the stuff, you need to register. I'm not sure how well it's done, but theoretically to buy a gun you have to go through a background screening to make sure you're not a felon or a nut. This doesn't mean felons or nuts can't get guns, but we need to at least raise the bar to prevent obvious problems.
One item in my own experience is we had a clinical schizophrenic shoot up a bar at my University, who bought his guns legally. He killed two or three people. I saw the blood of one of them on his friends shirt and hands.
The point of the 2nd Amendment is that LAW ABIDING, SANE people should have no restrictions on their ability to buy a gun. This is VERY different than saying EVERYONE should be able to buy a gun.
And I'm not even saying there should be any flags at this point, to where the DNA should not be sold. I'm just saying that we need some sort of filter, so we understand at a minimum what is going on in the light of day.
Obviously, you could get dark ships off-loading sinister cargoes of Synthetic DNA in the middle of the night, but that doesn't currently appear to be a problem. If they were off-loading anything, it would be the real deal.
Watchfulness need not be paranoia. We know there are people who want to hurt us, but we also know they took a steady pounding for 8 years under Bush. They know Obama is a lightweight--if not an outright supporter of them--but they also know we are BADASS when we want to be.
I was reading yesterday that 50% of Israelis support an immediate strike on Iran. 68% among self described conservatives, and 38% among self described liberals.
When I look back on the history of the Cold War, you had serious people among the Communists. You had serious people at the CIA, the Defense Department, the FBI, and at times in the White House.
And throughout, you had these imbecilic, self hating cretins like Ted Kennedy, and George Mcgovern, who played the role then, that Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, and the Messiah play today: that of Lenin's "useful idiots".
We are the good guys. No nation in the history of Earth has had a greater passion for justice, and no nation has put up with greater treachery and backstabbing than our own.
Obama is entirely irrelevant to peace or war in the Middle East. Israel knows they are on their own. Iran knows that there is no credible threat behind anything Obama says. Nobody really cares what he thinks. Nobody cares what his policy is, except to the extent that they need to appear to be participating in his self congratulatory dance of self delusion.
This point is patently obvious to ANYONE who studies history. Yes, diplomacy is better than war, but it ONLY works when you are dealing with moral people--very little of the world, and something close to NONE of the autocratic regimes out there--or when you are able to present a credible threat of undesirable consequences if the negotiation fails.
Thus, for the past half century you have had people who were serious on both sides, and little squirrels in the middle, fluttering around, making things harder inadvertently, where they are not actively trying to sabotage them.
Issues like germ warfare are real. We don't need to throw away liberty based on what COULD happen. But neither should we live in a make believe world where it is so hard to contemplate what COULD happen that no preparations are made.

You know, I would add that the same useful idiots are in play--and have been in play since the 70's--with respect to the Israeli/Arab refugee conflict.
The Israelis know that, as Benjamin Netanyahu (brother, for those of you who don't know, of the guy who planned and led the Raid on Entebbe) put it, that if the Arabs put down their guns tomorrow there would be peace, and if the Israealis put down their guns they would be slaughtered. This is reality. There is no other possible spin on this, that I can see, that does not do violence to the truth.
So why do we still have a conflict? Very simple: Arab opportunists are still able to use carefully crafted lies to deceive feeble minded people as to their intentions, much the way the Soviets did throughout their nightmarish history.
When the South Vietnamese blamed the Vietcong insurgency on the North, American leftists called it a civil war, brought on by "fascist" tendencies on the part of the Diem then Thieu regimes. They bought the propaganda.
What people seem not to realize--don't WANT to realize, and here I mean places like the New York Times and The Nation--is that we now KNOW that virtually the entire insurgency in the South was fostered by infiltrators from the North, who used Al Queda style violence and terror to control rural Vietnam. We know this from NORTH VIETNAMESE ARCHIVES AND RECORDS. There is no ambiguity. There is no gray area. This war ALWAYS originated in the North, and after Tet the South Vietnamese were nearly unanimous in their opposition to the terrorists from the North.
Why don't we learn these things? How can we be so stupid? All these years later, why does everyone not know we were the good guys in Vietnam, and that the triumph of the "peace" movement led to wide scale death, destruction, and horror?
All of these problems--bioterror, war in the Middle East, and any others anyone might want to mention--are solvable. Intelligent, pragmatic, results focused policies can be used to mitigate the dangers, and to preemptively prevent future ones through policies that support democracy, economic growth, and social liberalisation.
Why, then, do we so often pursue policies which appear calculated to achieve the OPPOSITE of our stated goal? Does Obama increase the chances of Middle East peace by being stupid?
Does he increase the chance of balancing the budget by setting spending records, then giving speeches about fiscal restraint? Or talking about our record debt--saying, quote, "we are broke"--then claiming health care "reform"--i.e. a massive increase in spending--is the solution?
This is farcical. Wake up. We used to have a lot of common sense. We used to be the ones who rejected the latest and greatest in social engineering some set of numbskulls was implementing overseas somewhere, then were there to laugh and pick up firesale investments when it fell apart.
Rant over. That should do for today.
Barry,
Good points...great rant! :)
