Me:42yo/M/5’10”/175lbs/10%BF
That’s how I have started my posts for the last two and a half years. The numbers have changed dramatically over the course of the last several years and I have Crossfit and the Paleo/Zone to thank for it. My crossfit journey has evolved over that course and my numbers continue to improve.
Having said that, I have a question to ask the rest day crowed and I am especially interested in the opinions of crossfitters who have been faithfully crossfitting and zoning for over three years.
As I have pursued and mastered the mechanics of the movements, and become consistent with those movements I have increased the intensity of my workouts and I am now to the point where, when I go to a globo gym, many people will just stare, and I like that ☺
Standing here today on my path from sickness through wellness to fitness, I am now pursuing dominance. It is just at this moment when I am now seeing some regression back from fitness. This regression can be categorized as injury(ies). No injury is serious (yet?) but I now have pain when I raise my left arm (dominant arm) in the top of the shoulder area, my elbows are constantly sore when I’m not working out and are uncomfortable to the touch and my toes get really sore sometimes for no reason. I also have other aches and pains that are more intermittent.
For the above reasons, I have decided to incorporate three phases into my crossfit programming. I call these phases crawl, walk, run and they describe my intensity level. I cannot decide how much time to allocate to each training phase. I am going to begin with two months of crawling at which time I will take the WOD and focus completely on the mechanics of the exercise(s). The walk phase will last 4 months and will consist of taking the WOD and going at a half to three-quarter intensity level with a continuing focus on the mechanics of the exercises making sure that my mechanics do not degrade, or degrade as little as possible. The run phase will last six months and during this phase I will go from a three quarter intensity to full on intensity trying to maintain the mechanics to at least the 90 percent level.
With all of the above being said, here is my question:
Has any other person who has been crossfitting for over three years had to do some programming like I am describing? If so, what did your program look like. I could really use some input especially the phasing, amounts of time in each phase and then other questions like: What does your warm-up and cool-down look like? My warm up and cool downs are skill based.
Sorry for being long winded. I hope that by giving this much information that I can avoid the baseless comments like, “your over-training”, or “your old, get used to it” I am well aware of both of these already ☺

Tieing into the movie, what kind of stories do people have of Crossfit advancing them in Wrestling?
I for one had never found a program that could reach the same intensity as rolling around for 6 mins.
this has probably been answered heaps of times before, so sorry for asking it again, but:
do crossfitters count the bar when totaling their weights?
eg is body weight bench 70kgs total, or 20kg bar plus body weight?

I had already read that article. A big part of the increase is fear of a ban on the part of consumers and more importantly suppliers. If you're an AR/BR manufacturer, you might add a shift to match rising demand, but you wouldn't buy additional capacity (factory/equipment) if you'd be out of business in a year.
Once people realize no ban is coming and the bank meltdown won't really lead to TEOTWAWKI, we should see those prices come down. (Esp. on 7.62 NATO I hope, b/c $1400/rifle is ridiculous and I want one!)
I think the increased tax is a non-starter also, b/c most of the people writing the bills don't realize that it's easily possible to go through 1000 rds of .22 LR in a weekend and people aren't going to stand for having to pay more than $30 to do it.
BTW Kyle rules he is so an inspiration...really Kyle thanks so much for giving the best on your WODs when i'm itred and just thinking on going slower i just think "Kyle hit his WODs harder as he can why WHY don't you?? explote son of a "!$% EXPLOTE DAMN IT" really Kyle you are an inspiration for me...ALL my respects brother

All weightlifting that uses a barbell includes the weight of the bar. My Lynne is 160# bench press which is 2x45# plates, 2x10# weights, and 2x2 1/2 weights. This is 115# of added weight plus a 45# bar (approximate bar weight).
Should a new tax be imposed on good, increasing the price, the demand for that taxed good would decrease, and demand for a substitute good would increase.
In the case of ammo that the government has a tax record of, a substitute good would most likely be ammo that the government does not have a tax record of.
If that tax is applied to the guns themselves, or they are banned, a similar practice will take place of selling guns on non-government regulated markets.
I'm trying to keep the term black market out of this, black market is a term invented by people who believe that the only way to trade is in a way where the government has it's fingers in the pot.
* I try to keep theory discussions in as neutral of language as possible, avoiding terms that have an emotion attached to them (illegal alien, black market, commie pinko). The last time I did this I got some heat for the term "undocumented American." Its not political correctness, it's taking the emotion associated with certain words out of the discussion.
so last rest day jakers started a globo gym story trend and i was away from the site for a while and didnt get to post, so i have a couple stories jsut form the weekend,
background - im about a month into crossfit thanks to my uncle and i have never been so stoked on anything in my life, i have always played hockey and lacrosse and football but now that im out of school i got lazy and needed something to get me back active
story 1
i went to my old hometown to see my best friends and party hard, after drinkin a few too many wobly pops on friday night i woke up feeling guilty and decided to go to the rec center for a work out, not knowing the WOD i was just gonna throw something together ( ended up: 5 round for time, run 400 meters, 45 lb thruster 10 reps, 10 pull ups, 10 sit ups) i managed to talk a buddy into gettin up and coming with, i had mentioned CF to him a few times but he had no interest, so as we mozy out of the change room he says to me "so is it an upper body day or lower body?" i preceded to tell him he should have listened when i explained cross fit last time. so i stretched put him through a warm up and by that time he was ready to quit. he started walking to the locker room and i asked him if he needed to use the facilities before the workout, he responded with a loud "are you serious?! thats not the workout?" i told him no and he dropped his head and turned on a dime to join me, i explained the workout and it began. half way through he bailed and i finished hard, i met him in the steam room where i asked how he felt, i got what an ass chewing reminiscent of my dad catching me drinking at 16, he was not pleased that i put him through that after the night we had, i laughed the whole time and when he left i felt more accomplished then after any other work out. we settled the bad blood over a hot coffee and he credited the whole CF community for bein outstanding athletes. this very same weekend my friends decided they wanted to grab some mcdicks (AKA McDonalds)for dinner, so as we stood in line they all placed their order, and i stood and watched, telling myself the whole time i couldnt comprehend putting that garbage into my body, after everyone else placed their order the greasy kid at the till turned to me and gives me the standard "and, what can i get for you sir?" now what i wanted to say was "a bottle of water and thats it. thank you" but what actually came out went something like this "nothing, eating here is against my religion" looking shocked, my friends pound a section of empty tables where we could all sit and when we got settled one of them asked me what religion prevented me from enjoying a greasy big mac, and befor i could answer, the very same friend i took to the gym earlier answered it for me very simply "Crossfit" and then the questions came. LOL
so im not sure if the community will find this as humourous as i did but i figured i would share it anyway, happy resting, and ill be making up sundays WOD tomorrow instead of resting
so many people using my namesake. might have to change it to something else shortly.

I usually don't post on the comments (I always write my stuff down; just easier for me to refer to). However, I feel compelled to thank all of the Crossfit veterans that continue to share their insights, whether it be about the WOD, overcoming personal trials, words of encouragement, or a funny story. While these message boards are always very active, I want you to know that more Crossfitters than you realize read these and appreciate them. I hope you continue to enrich the Crossfit experience.

I don't believe gun sales will drop that much. There might me a few short downturns in the gun market but historically people are in the market for guns. When something bad happens (Y2K, 9/11, etc..) People go out and buy guns. You would thing there would be an adverse reaction when good things happen but there isn't. People go out and buy guns when they feel good too.

#25 Either way, gun prices will drop. If a sustained increase in gun sales is seen, then manufacturers will increase production.
I just hope this will mean prices come down just in time for me to start my collection (need my degree, job and money first).
These videos continually solidify my desicion to further study, teach and develop this system.

But on a serious note, thanks for the encouraging words. CrossFit truly has enhanced not only the quality of my fitness, but the same can honestly be said for my life in the past year.
Not to mention, CrossFit's taken me to new heights in the role it's playing to prepare me to whoop some ass in my first amatuer MMA fight coming up on April 25th. A lot of people don't want to see me do it...thinking I'll invariably get hurt, and it'll hurl the sport back into the dark ages. But I'm more confident than I've ever been, and this community is a big part of that.
Also, in regards to Patrick's comment #18- he forgot to mention that our box is right next to a full service Oriental Massage Parlor- which has to have played into his decision to commute to hit the WODs with us...
Don't agree with any of the points made in the gun article. The stocks are performing the same as every other stock right now.
Ruger cloased at 7.15 on Oct 31. It closed at 5.84 on Nov 14. So Obama's victory apparently drove the price down, not up.
Now it's going up with the rest of the market.
Regarding the Heller decision, so far it is firing blanks. The only law which was overturned by Heller prohibited someone accused of possessing kiddie porn from having a gun.

Recently I re-arranged my home, which included setting up small gym at my bedroom. My mother came to see it and commented on the color of the walls and bed cover.
Later on I hear from friends she's afraid I will wake up some day in nightmare over all this 'steel' in my room.

I realise that rugby is a sport of marginal interest to most CrossFitters (the majority of whom seem to be based in the United States), but you may be aware that the Irish team has just won the Six Nations Championship, with a Grand Slam, defeating France, Italy, England, Scotland and Wales. This is the first time Ireland has achieved a "slam" since 1948 and is a cause for much celebration here in Dublin and all around the country. Congratulations to all the players and coaching staff on a magnificent achievement. Anyway, all this got me thinking: could rugby be the quintessential CrossFit sport? It requires tremendous intensity, involving all-out sprinting, followed by the requirement (in the tackle or ruck) to generate huge power, often with no or very little rest between efforts.
The final match of the championship was between Wales (last year's champions) and Ireland in Cardiff last Saturday. As an example of just how intense international rugby can be, it is hard to beat (I daresay Irish contributors will have posted a few videos to youtube, for those who are interested). I have rarely seen such a brutally physical confrontation. Changes to the rules now mean that the ball tends to stay in play for longer periods, which places extraordinary additional demands on the fitness of the players; this, I think, may be what distinguishes the game from gridiron football, where the ball is out of play for extended periods and there are line changes depending on whether the team is attacking or defending. In rugby (allowing for up to six substitutions) the players stay on the pitch for the full 80 minutes.
In the modern game, the position of openside flanker (no. 7) in particular seems to me to exemplify the sort of competencies that CrossFit tries to foster. The no. 7 is required to be immediately present every time the ball breaks down, in order to contest for possession, both in defence and in offence. He is expected to be on the shoulder of any player making a line break, to provide an option for offloading; he participates in scrums and lineouts, often as an important jumper trying to secure possession from throw-ins; he is expected to exhibit great strength, agility, balance and speed. David Wallace and Martyn Williams (the Irish and Welsh No. 7s, respectively, in last Saturday's match) are both remarkable players who fulfill all of these criteria. Perhaps the greatest modern exponent, however, is Richie McCaw of New Zealand, an amazing athlete, who is widely regarded as one of the best opensides in the history of the game. These players seem to me to be serious candidates for the title of fittest men on the planet, according to the CrossFit criteria. I wonder could any of them be persuaded to participate in the CrossFit Games. Now that would be interesting.

While I do not exactly meet your criteria, I wish to share my thoughts with you and your desire to alter your programing.
I am a M/47(next month 48)/6'/184# about 9% BF
I have been training Crossfit for 1 year and 6 days, however I have been strength training using both compund and isolation exercises for over 30 years, I studyed Tae Kwon Do for over 15 years, I have been a runner for 36 years and in addition to all of that I swim and cycle as I train for triathalons. My diet is 90% pure, no processed garbage so I eat mostly lean proteins, vegies, fruits and lots of almonds.
Generally speaking, your plan makes sense as most any athlete's body need recovery. What you are describing is periodization and I urge you to research this topic. Any athlete of any age goes through this. Most athletic seaons are broken down into mesocycles, each with their own specific form of stimulus and output, quite similar to our sport, Crossfit.
Listen to your body, if it is frequently breaking down with nagging pains, it's telling you that it needs a break.

Just wanted to say that it's hard to identify when someone has to slow down for a bit, especially if that someone is you, and if you did that, it's even harded to actually cut back. So respect for that. That time allocations you gave yourself are ample and show true long term dedication.

alright so I did Sundays and yesterdays workout together... all and all not bad
Sunday WOD ~ avg 10/round at 175 lbs and 15 to 20 pullups/round
Monday WOD ~ 8 flatt following right after the previous, not great, used a 18lbs med ball that is heaviest I own, also while doing the wallballs my iron woody (the med ball) keep raining down sand on me and into my eyes. I figured i had to do at least 85- 90% of the workout with my eyes closed... that makes for a different experience!
Enjoy our restday, my active rest will be washing/waxing/ and detailing the beast!

The author makes good points about how much more mainstream military pattern rifles have become. Plus, I really don't see any actual danger with having AR-15s or AK-47s legal.
Hopefully, if a ban were enacted, Heller's precedent would overturn it.

the gun shows in VA are amazing. you would never believe there's a depression. and, for the girlies out there who aren't part of the gun culture but are curious: yes, there are some renaissance faire freak show attendees at gun shows, but ahem, and listen up: there's also an unusually high body count of hot guys. It's like Quantico and Pendleton shipped in crates full of muscles and tattoos. Go. Look around. Take one home.

Received my food scale yesterday and ready to give the Zone a try. But, I'm alittle unsure about the amount of blocks I should eating. From Corssfit Journal 21 it suggests 17 blocks for a medium male (I'm 40 years old 5'11" 160-165lbs) but 21 blocks for hard gainers which I have always considered myself. My weight isn't that important to me, up or down is fine as long as healthy. Should I start at the higher block count and lower if I'm not leaning out sufficiently or start at the lower count and increase if my performance starts to suffer? Thanks for any advise. Jim

That’s certainly my hope, .60 cents per round of milsurp 7.62x51 is ridiculous when the cost of base metals is so low.

Unfortunately, untaxed ammo will carry a premium due to the risks of running an illegal business. Look at the price of cigarettes vs. the price of marijuana. Tobacco, although taxed heavily is still cheaper than marijuana because of the risk involved in selling marijuana.

I don’t claim to have any special insight into the future, but ask yourself this: when consumers are losing jobs, retrenching, and generally cutting back spending in every other aspect of their lives, do you think they will still pay $1,600 for an AR-15?

Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. However, the Heller decision is very new and none of the challenges brought under Heller have hit the supreme court. Just a few days ago SAF filed a lawsuit challenging DC’s new gun bans. I’ve read the brief and spoken to one of the parties involved, it’s a very strong case. Thanks. I can’t agree with your second point, however. Guns are dangerous, so are cars, gasoline, and 5-gallon buckets, so the question to me isn’t, “are guns dangerous?” but rather “Would society be a better place with them in the hands of the police and criminals exclusively?”

Indeed. Your best bet is to purchase the kinds of arms that haven’t been affected by ban hysteria but rather have been hurt by the depression. For example, pre-1899 mosins and mausers, 22lr bolt guns, 22lr repeaters (10/22’s for example), 22lr pistols. If you normally shoot 100 rounds when you practice, while centerfire ammo is ludicrously expensive, practice with 200 rounds of 22lr.

if you've already mastered the movements, why would you want to spend two months doing wods slowly focusing on the mechanics of the movements? if you're feeling the effects of overtraining (and it sounds like you are) it probably has more to do with the 3 on 1 off schedule. most every athlete over 40 says recovery is the greatest challenge in their training. don't be afraid to change up the schedule to maybe 3 on 1 off 2 on. also think about including a cycle off every now and then.
i think you should still hit the wods hard just slightly less often.
and yes i fit your criteria. 44 and crossfiting for almost 4 years now. warm up is some light stretching of my lower back, dislocates with pvc, row 500m, some push ups squats and pull ups and the bergener warm up. cool down with a beer after.
Karen, I constantly tell my friends of the upcoming zombie invasion and they scoff at me!
I've noticed ammo prices rising and good quality hard to find since the invasion of Iraq, and this trend has continued and the gradual price increase reaching screeching level since Democrats took charge of Congress. And now that Obama is in office, people are really freaking out.
Wolf 7.62x39 and 54R is hard to come by in Dayton, and even .45acp has gone up at Wally World. Am I whining? Yeah, I guess so, but I intend to stock up soon, not out of fear of increasing prices, just at how much a pain it is to find what I want regarding the Wolf ammo (personal favorite). Heck, I am tempted to go to Indiana to find what I want in bulk.
And the Gun and Knife Show? It's one big anti-Obama/Democrat Show when the real fear should have started back when the Patriot Act was first past. I don't attend anymore because 1) the majority of the people there stink, and I mean that in that they REALLY do stink, as in nacho and BO, and 2) they use this 'fear' of everything government now to bump up their prices when in reality you can go to Gander Mountain or your local gun shop and get real deals and have people work to find what you want.

Today was my first day of doing crossfit. My brother fat tony got me interested in giving it a try. I started with the workout from 3.17.09 - the murph. I used the scaled down buttercup version from brand x.
Here's what I did:
1/2 mile run/walk
25 pullups (modified standing)
50 pushups (wall)
75 squats
1/2 mile run/walk
time: 29min. 56sec.
My legs feel like jelly! It definitely got my hr up like crazy. It felt good in a painful, hard way. I'm excited to do a new WOD tomorrow!

Coach Glassman just gave a lecture where he addressed your situation as well as anyone that I have seen on this site. While I can't quote him exactly, the jist is that CFers need to listen to their bodies. Most CFers want a program that they can follow that will deliver optimum fitness (ie, how many months should I spend in crawl, walk, run?). There is no such formula. Coach implied that when your body starts to break down or you see your bench mark times increasing instead of decreasing, it is time to take a break or reduce intensity. His comment was that he wishes he had a formula b/c it would make him a lot of money.
IMO, your problem is that your goal is now to "dominate." In that effort, you are pushing your body too hard. I am 42 and have been CFing since 2004. I've had the same problems (sore elbows, nagging injuries, etc.) when I push it too hard. Coach mentioned that CF is a ten year program. ie, it is a program that will allow you to progress for 10 years. I think you can dominate, but only if you are willing to take more time to get there. My 2 cents.

Three things,
First: The grand slam was well won by the Irish. I train crossFit to play rugby and the 15 lbs combined with the lower body fat I've put on this off season is (hopefully) going to leave a mark.
Second: I always love a talk about the second amendment in the American constitution. Read the book, "Second Treaties on Government" by Locke and note the startling similarities. Essentially, your constitution was written by Locke, an American sympathizer during the American/English war. One huge difference is that in Locke's book he says that "the people have the right AND DUTY to bear arms, AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT IF THE GOVERNMENT FAILS TO REPRESENT THE INTERESTS OF THE PEOPLE." Keep in mind he lived saw the effects of the English civil war, and lived through the arguments in England regarding the rights/obligations of the leaders. The founding fathers of the U.S. got toothless and took the important part out, giving rights without duties is a tragic combination.
Third: I hear so many stories of people getting hurt for no reason other then guns were close at hand. I have a cousin that was cut off on the highway and in a brief second made a horrible decision to shoot at the guy, now he gets three years for a terrible decision. No gun = No problem. A guy in a temple in Texas kneels down to pray and his gun falls out, goes off. Three people get shot in the ensuing chaos because a bunch of people pull out guns and start shooting. Idiots making poor decisions equals bad outcomes, idiots making poor decisions with firearms equals tragedies.
I'm glad this is a rest day, because I spent seven hours last night in bed, staring at the walls. Got a whopping 1-1/2 hours of sleep. This sucks.

#1 Billy – I can sympathize with you as I too develop nagging injuries. I’ve been crossfitting for over three years (after a lifetime of free weight workouts) and am 57 years old. Currently I’m dealing with knee and elbow pain. The elbow injury is the typical tennis elbow that comes and goes. The knee strain was from box jumps last month and I’m hopefully healing it with ice and massage. On the positive side my rotator cuff injury has just about healed. I injured it about 18 months ago trying to swing on the rings like I use to 40 years ago in high school. At times it was quite painful, but the alternative of surgery with 6 to 9 months recovery was abhorrent to me (I like crossfitting and golf too much). Suddenly two months ago it started to really feel better, so I’m hopeful I’m over this.
Trying to get injuries to heal is probably the dark side of working out at high intensity with functional movements. It’s hard to rest an injured area – how do you rest your shoulder or knee for weeks and still do crossfit? I understand your strategy of relearning the basic movements. I’m fortunate in that I belong to an affiliate with excellent trainers (CrossFit Marina) who keep my form dialed in.
On one hand I’m kind of disappointed in getting these injuries, because after all this crossfit training I thought I was bullet proof. However, if I look at what I put my body through on my daily workouts – muscle ups, deadlifts, running, clean & jerk, etc. – I’m not sure there are many people of my age out there that could do it with less injuries. So at the end of the day I’m thankful for the health crossfit and my affiliate provide me. Hopefully these workouts will prevent a debilitating injury.

It sounds to me like another curve, where a person starts out sub-optimal, as far as nagging injuries and pain. He then begins to train in a useful, intelligent way, and strengthens what needs to be stregthened, moves what needs to move, and begins to feel better and be able to do much more with less pain. But maybe continuing to push that envelope leads to an increase in injury, a trend back towards the sub-optimal. More isn't always better. I guess the increase in effort required as we close in on genetic potential takes it's toll, and it may be best to back off, and kinda settle (if I may use a dirty word) for just a step down from super-human.

I think you are conflating Burke and Locke. Burke, if memory serves, was Irish.
The English Revolutions were in the 17th Century, so Locke could not have been around. He was in fact a wanted subversive for some period of time, if memory serves. He did some of his writing while in hiding or overseas.
The thing about guns is they provide a needed potential counterweight to governmental abuses. Anyone who reads the history of the Holocaust, or the genocide against the Kulaks (and many others) in the Soviet Union will understand immediately why one of the first things the Nazis and Bolsheviks did was ban private gun ownership.
Equally important, in conditions of civil unrest, it is unreasonable to expect police to be everywhere at once. We all need, potentially, to be the law. This was literally the case in the West during our expansion, but could quite easily be the case in the event of catastrophic attacks of the sort Warren Buffet has said are inevitable.
What if Reginald Denny had pulled a .357 and blown a couple of heads off? We never would have had to watch that video.
Ultimately, any society that fears private gun ownership fears its own citizens. Gun ownership is as essential to democracy as free speech is.
The nations that have forgotten this are rapidly succumbing to Islamic totalitarianism. Guns, themselves, don't matter, but the ability to understand their need does.
The history of this world is littered with horrible violence, in which the strong dominate the weak. Why be weak? This is a very valid question, and I can see no answers other than cowardice and short term convenience.

Neil, cheers. I have been playing rugby for 8 years, but just found Crossfit about 9months ago. I play number 8 and open side for a men’s club out of Boise, ID. Nothing in my previous training has better prepared me for matches than Crossfit workouts. I have fully immersed myself in the culture and philosophies – I subscribe to the news letter, bought Mark Rippetoe’s Starting Strenght, follow a 20+ block zone diet. I have become a much better player because of it, but I also found that strictly sticking to the main site WOD’s does not fully transfer to the pitch. At the end of the summer of ‘08 and through the fall season, some fellow teammates and I discovered crossfit and religiously followed the rx’d WOD. Our rugby fitness and strength dramatically increased, and we were making physical (aesthetic) gains we didn’t think were possible because of our prior efforts. That being said, our second half fitness was still poor. Midway through the fall season we started tweaking our workouts, incorporating the Navy Seal Crossfit site and the Mountain Athlete site out of Jackhole. We continued this training through the winter and the results have been dramatic. Our training efforts have carried over through the team, also. About 10 of us do crossfit style workouts, and one guy is even opening a gym here in Boise (www.crossfitrefinery.com – site debut next month, gym in May). Speaking only for myself, I would probably be laughed out of the xfit games if I competed – there is something about 6’3, 220 lanky lbs that just brutally kills my fran times.

Three people were injured when a gun accidentally discharged during Rosh Hashanah services at Temple Emanu-El on Wednesday evening.
When Marvin Marks, 81, stood up at the synagogue, a gun that he was carrying dropped and fired, police said. The bullet struck his 42-year-old daughter in the foot; she was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Two others suffered minor scrapes from the bullet. Police said Mr. Marks was licensed to carry the gun, and the shooting is listed as accidental.

The point I was trying to make is that Locke said the people had the right and the duty to bear arms against the government if the government fails to represent their interests. Some of the most dangerous people I have spoken to say that they own the weapons because they have the right, and forget their duties and obligations to safety, proper use and protocol.
I agree that governments should fear the governed. I also agree that there are some bad people in the world, take away guns and crime happens with pointed sticks, but it gets a whole lot harder to hold up a bank with a pointed stick then an assault rifle, or in a tragic event kill four hard working and brave police officers. The absolute point of government is to control the use and application of violence for coercion against people that violate the social contract.
Although look at the situation in China, they have a near crack down on public ownership of weapons and just the other day a soldier on guard duty was killed for his weapon.

I think you kinda are getting around to this in your own reasoning, but just because any type of weapon is illegal does not mean that criminals cannot or will not have it. Use the U.K. as a "for instance", since they ban quite a few firearms, and still have violent criminals arrested with illegal guns. Meanwhile, the people placid enough to just go along with the laws are left using knives (while recently the government of the U.K. has been trying to take the points off of cooking knives, seriously.)

I guess I'm a gun control skeptic. In my own case, I have never bought a gun because I figure my odds of hurting myself are probably better than my odds of actually using one in self defense. But that calculus could change, and I would like to have the right to decide for myself when it has changed.
Sheamus, your arguments might make sense if we could go back to some mythic state where law abiding, reasonable people and not-law abiding, murderous psychopaths alike were unarmed. But right now the criminal element of our society is unbelievably well equipped, and can get armaments of almost any kind, anytime. The only question is how fast can the pipeline deliver them the crates of ordinance they need. Even if you rule out extreme scenarios (which you probably shouldn't) why take away weapons from responsible people who might need them? I have no great love of guns, but it seems to me gun control is not a practical solution to anything. Yes, we live in a weirdly violent society, don't know what the solution to that is, wish I knew.
According to the most recently released F.B.I. crime statistics, violent crime is at a many-decades low, while gun ownership is at an all-time high. I think the perception of the "violent U.S. society" is more a function of the news media's need to sell commercial airtime than of the actual situation.

I take your point that violence and gun ownership need not be correlated (or possibly are inversely correlated) and you are right to call me out on not having any data. But isn't it the case that in absolute terms (compared to other countries) we still live in a pretty violent society, even though in relative terms (compared to ourselves) we've made a lot of progress? As I ask this, it seems to me that might be a hard claim to test against reliable data. It may be that other countries don't report and track violent crimes as well as the FBI does.
Nick #98: The cheapest to shoot and easiest to use gun in my opinion would be a .22. You can buy around 500 rounds for ~$10 (I am in SC though so they may be more expensive elsewhere). It is a really good starter gun. Be careful with it though because while it is a small and cheap gun, .22 bullets can travel up to around 1.5 miles if fired at a 45 degree angle. Lastly, it should only cost you around 100 bucks new, maybe more like 60 or 70 if you can find one used.

Honestly, this I don't know. It's interesting, though, and I may look it up. I'm assuming you mean countries which are comparable to us in standard of living, culture, etc. and not Rwanda. I've heard that the U.K. has been having a crime problem the last decade or so, but I don't have any numbers to back that up, and it's only one nation anyway. Interesting question.

You sound like me. I have been feeling joint and tendon pain more and more, up until my surgery. Obviously it has subsided since not being able to go full-throttle and resting has become less overlooked in the past two months for me.
I also e-mailed you this a bit ago:
"Billy, I saw your post and it intrigued me. Are you warming up thoroughly? I heard OPT say "The shorter and more intense the WOD, the longer I warm-up." Also, maybe you need more variety in your diet. You say Paleo/Zone, but what is it specifically? What about fish oil?"
"I want you to enjoy crossfit for the ages. I want to enjoy it till I'm 100. Have you asked RJF about it? He hasn't missed a WOD in over 420 WODs. He doesn't have the best posted times, but not missing since July 2007 is amazing."
Also, what Ken C, julie P, Richard, Alan, and BobM have said all make sense. Listen to what's going on with your own body. I am learning a lot about recovery right now, since I'm doing the shoulder rehab. As I come back to the movements, I will be extra careful with any overhead movements, especially ones with fast repetitive movements such as "Fight Gone Bad" and "Grace".
What about Crossfit main site WODs on the 1st and 3rd days in the cycle, and technique work on the 2nd day, like Olympic Lifts? That's what I plan on doing. It should prove to be beneficial.

i'm totally agreed with OPT and Herm for me the WODs that in witch i have morer carefulland warm-up better are on those fast ones...you know they will take a few minutes and you EXPLOTE and perform fast and agressive moves that could hurt you so on that fast ones i do an special warm up....

It's actually more than a couple of people. It was all of the ratifiers of the Constitution. And they didn't "decide" what rights you had. The *observed* the rights that belong naturally to man, and made an attempt to design a government whose main purpose was to safeguard those rights.

A couple of points. First, please explain - how is it irrelevant? For example, perhaps one of the reasons we've not had the history of despots that Europe has is that we have an armed citizenry. Second, even if it is irrelevant, so what? The Constitution is a contract, not to be abrogated at will. If you want to change it, it has a mechanism that allows its amendment.
I have also always found it absurd to think that in the Bill of Rights, which spells out individual rights, the *second* amendment is somehow deemed a collective right.
Frankly, I'm of the opinion that whatever the police can have, so should any citizen be able to have.

To my mind owning a firearm is about responsibility and choice.
I own a legally purchased and registered 9mm Beretta. I train in the martial arts. I don’t do so to “catch criminals.” I do this TO BE ABLE to defend myself and loved ones in the event I need to. It does not mean I won’t be calling the police if I witness a crime. They are professionals; it’s their job to work in those situations.
I have chosen to be able to defend myself - with or without a firearm - should the need arise. The Constitution says that right “shall not be infringed.”

If you “limit the weapons that are sold” by passing laws that do so, you will only divert the market for weapons underground, into a black (as in not regulated by the state) market. History has shown this in numerous ways - prohibition for instance.

The simple fact of the matter is eventually every government gets abusive eventually. Rome abused Christians, the French monarchy abused it's people, the English abused it's colonies (that's where the USA came from). The English abused the Irish, the Nazis abused the Jews (as as well as others), the Soviets abused several groups.
Some of these abused groups were able to rise up and end their oppression, others were not. Most of the groups that were not able to rise up and end their oppression were oppressed systematically, taking away the ability for these groups to end their oppression. The first step in subjugating a population is to take away their ability to defend themselves.
Civilians need military grade weapons because the military has those weapons. If a group does not have the ability to stand up to it's government they arn't citizens they are subjects.
I'll be honest: I'm not comfortable with the idea that other civilians to carry so much power as to end my life in a manner in which I am powerless to prevent it... aside from lowering myself to their level(and even that isn't very effective... at which point the first person to strike is the one that wins).
Simply put, I do not want any average Joe to be able to become my prosecutioner, judge, jury and executioner at his heart's desire.
I solemnly believe that the judiciary system is there for a reason, and the people who want to keep their guns in case they ever have to go toe to toe with a swat unit are (excuse the ad-hom) nutjobs that shouldn't be allowed to have guns in the first place (you want to have a gun in case you disagree with the representatives of the rest of humanity as to whether or not you should be put on public trial fully knowing that you will ultimately be put on trial, just to kill as many messengers as you can before you get what is coming to you? Get bent...)...
I do, however, understand that in some parts of the USA, hunting is a means of providing your family with food. So I cannot bring myself to support the ban of all weapons. Just ones with no practical use.
The effect outlined in the article is not very surprising - it only highlights this country's addiction to what I effectively consider power. I'm sure ecstasy sales went up just before that drug got became illegal too. People want one last cheap thrill before they can no longer obtain it.

Yeah, tuna salad stinks! You know whats good? Take a bag of broccoli slaw, divide it in two containers, split a 6 oz.can of tuna tween the two, cut up a cup of grapes- literally cut them in half over the containers so juice goes in them, helps keep tuna moist, and then add 1TBS amount of viniagrette salad dressing into both. Shake em up real good... perfect 3 block meal. Grapes add nice sweetness, brock slaw good crunch and more filling than just plain ole celery.

Before you go confiscating the millions of lawfully owned “assault weapons” (aka evil black rifles), please answer the following questions? Have you fired a ‘so-called’ assault weapon? Could you explain how it differs from a hunting rifle in performance, effectiveness, or features? Perhaps you could define “practical use?” Is target shooting a practical use? Does the United States Practical Shooting Association promote practical uses? If “assault weapons” have no ‘practical use’ other than “hunting IRS agents”, why does the AR-15, the most common ‘assault weapon’ in the US, dominate rifle competitions all over the United States? (Hint: it’s not because it sprays bullets in every direction). Practice has shown that a bottle with flammable liquid and lit sock attached to it does a better job at that than a gun. This tactic was used rather successfully by Soviet soldiers to impede on the progress of the Germans in WWII.
For extraordinary situations, I would, personally, suggest boarding a plane over picking up a gun.

And, I'm with R. Brent Mattis on the issue of assault rifles. they're useful for all sorts of things from sport competitions to killing animals and people.
we have our firearms to keep ourselves safe from criminals, to keep our communities safe from attack or invasion, and to keep our government respectful of the people. it's a nice quiet system. the more effective and plentiful the weapons in the hands of the decent citizens, the quieter everything remains.
The day I see so much as a video of someone kill someone else with a match from the other side of a room without the room previously being filled with gasoline or some other kind of trap of the sort, I will consider your argument valid. However, my argument was based on the sheer efficiency of deadliness of firearms, and the defensiveness of victims to them. If someone comes at me with a knife, I have several options such as try to knock the knife away in close combat, try to dodge the attacks, or (more likely really... because I just dont feel like being stabbed anytime soon unless its for a really good cause) just turn around and outrun the guy. Not so with a gun! Running most certainly wont work... unless its the first time the individual has ever shot a gun... and odds are I wont be able to get close enough to the guy to be able to disable the weapon before I get close enough to where he stops missing. My only solutions are to try to hide behind something and pray or hide behind something and try to shoot back, in which case first person to hit wins, so to say - a scenario which I just don't like my odds in no matter how much training I go through.

When and if the government must be overthrown small arms (what ever they have evolved into at that point) will be useful. As any of the military folks on the forum could attest the best way to retake a country from a government is by having a well planned attack that moves quickly, and is coordinated for maximum effectiveness with minimal bloodshed. The goal would be to overthrow with minimal resistance. Odds are good that if there were serious infringement of rights, some military personnel would be on the side of the revolt, allowing it to come from within. Also that way a financial adviser / economist isn't planning these things.

The same reason we allow racists to print hateful words and criminals to gain the benefit of the 4th amendment in trial. The constitution protects the rights of everyone, even people we don't like and disagree with passionately.
In your specific example, ANYONE awaiting trial is considered innocent until proven guilty. If the judge is convinced the potential criminal represents a danger to society, he or she can be held without bail, in which case their right to own guns is forfeit. If the person doesn't represent a danger to society, please explain why their second amendment rights (remember, the rights on par with freedom of speech, religion, and assembly) should be infringed.
I hope I made that idea clear.

Have I missed something, or are there a significant number of CrossFitters that are actually building an OPLAN for overthrowing the gov't? I realize this is a generally right leaning crowd, but geez.
I am a military officer and have a hard time coming up with plausible and probable (not possible, probable) scenarios in which I would be involved in an overthrow of the gov't. Sure, there are any number of Orwellian-types of scenarios that could lead to an insurrection type of mov't.....but with our current political system (which aside from the rise of special interests) has been unchanged for over 200 years? I don't see it happening. Invasive across our borders (not referring to the illegal aliens coming for work) requiring us to set up fighting positions on the beach? Again, don't see that scenario either. I guess I am naive.
Maybe there is some sort of scenario 200 years from now that these scenarios might occur - sort of like Red Dawn with Patrick Swayze.
Personal protection? I will give on this one, although it is only in rare cases that someone actually guns down the assailant. It happens, but it is rare. My dad wasn't able to. He had to chose between going for a gun in the closet and saving my mom. He elected to save my mom and the gun in the closet was irrelevant while they escaped out the window when the a-holes were ransacking the other rooms looking for wall safe that didn't exist. I suppose that if we all went around with concealed or unconcealed side arms, that might provide instantaneous protection, but I don't think we can go down the OK Corral path for our entire society.
Before I get painted with all sorts of labels, I am active duty in the military, 3 tours in Iraq, and a gun owner (M-1911).

To address one part of the gun violence issue:
There must be some method which would prevent spree-killers from using easy-to-function high-capacity firearms to kill a bunch of folks, and the idea that victims should have been carrying firearms to defend themselves just won't work.
Kids in high schools cannot be armed to defend themselves from an armed attack, neither can everyone shopping in a mall, going to college, etc.
If we assume more people carried handguns, and the spree-killer has a shoulder fired weapon, the hand gunner is at a severe disadvantage (not insurmountable, but rough). Also, since a determined freak-show with initiative and momentum can sometimes overcome even hightly-trained armed people (police) in a fight, it is a bit unrealistic for the weekend-range-shooting armed citizen to be an effective (or the only) deterrent to a spree-killer.
I am for responsible gun ownership. How about if the massive number of folks who are concerned about losing thier right to own firearms focus on coming up with solutions to this problem...might eliminate the primary concern of the anti-gun movement.
On occasion firearms owners may feel that confronting the issue of the misuse of firearms is someone else's problem. Perhaps the default is that the goverment should figure out how to keep guns out of the wrong hands. Well, the government may move to severely limit private firearms ownership to try to deal with it...
One only needs to be charged once by a Grizzly whilst carrying a handgun to realize that all the gun range time in the world does not prepare one for the heat of the moment.

You have picked a very good nome de plume. Your arguments are all about how hard it is to defend yourself, and it just won't work, so why try. This is the stance of the pussy. If the crap should ever hit the fan, I would not expect you to contribute anything but reasons why the things that the men (and empowered women) in the group are doing, can't work. No doubt you were telling everyone in 2006 why the war in Iraq was unwinnable.
No one is talking about overthrowing the government. We are, in fact, arguing in support of our government. I really, really don't like Obama, but that does not cause me to reject the system. In point of fact, I am USING the system to argue that the laws in place are useful and worth protecting.
As far as civil disorder, the situation is simple. We have between hundreds and thousands of dedicated militants working to commit acts of mass murder in the United States. Because Bush succeeded in preventing further 9/11's, people have forgotten what these radicals have not: we are the dominant superpower, still, in the world, and we are the de facto guarantors of peace. North Korea has to fear us. Iran has to fear us. Al Queda, wherever it may take root, has to fear us.
Why is it implausible that they could hit New York or Washington, or Chicago with a nuke? Or a successful bioterror attack? A great many of our National Guard units--our militias--have been called up and deployed overseas.
Who does the job of the police when the police can't be everywhere? In theory, every citizen of the United States is equal, under law, to every other. This means we are all responsible for the maintenance of order. Yes, some people are dedicated law enforcement agents, but you see WE RULE OURSELVES. Democracy is rule of the people, BY the people, for the people.
Given this, EVERY citizen should be in principle and actuality a microcosm of the whole. This includes the capacity for self defense.

Sheamus talks about an accident involving a dropped gun. The simple fact is that many guns have protective mechanisms designed to prevent precisely that scenario, such as dual triggers and of course safeties.
Moreover, every time you talk about an accident, you have also to reference the statistics about drops in crime. For every person shot illegally, a crime somewhere is prevented from happening by the fear of the criminal that the person they are contemplating victimizing might be armed.
In my own view, the problem in the ghettoes is that only the criminals have guns. I literally think crime rates could be reduced substantially by GIVING guns to people who have a demonstrated history of not breaking the law, and by altering the laws to make legal defense of self defense shootings easier. This need not lead to vigilantism, but even if it did, I think it needs to be pointed out that we have many places in this country--like Detroit, South Central LA, and South Chicago--where we have de facto war zones, that are unfit for any sane human being, and in which ordinary, decent people are trapped. That is a horror in itself, and continuing the policies--to be clear, the DEMOCRAT'S policies--that created this situation is unconscionable.
I've read a few of the comments, and even though I sincerely appreciate their service to society, I depend upon myself to defend my home in addition to calling the police. Either I have a firearm to protect my wife and myself or I have some other means (mace, knives, fire extinguisher, etc), but it's my responsibility. Notice I don't include property because items can be replaced, but my wife, my soon-to-be in this world son, nor myself can.
And no, assault weapons and other high velocity firearms are a very bad idea for home defense. They will shoot through someone, go through your home's wall and will enter someone else's home or car. Shotgun or low-velocity handgun, like a .45 (185 grain) are your best options.
I think the principle with respect to assault rifles is simply this: by what basis are they banned? The potential for their abuse? Most of our worst mass murders were committed with handguns.
The lack of a need for them? Well, if self defense is the criteria, they are clearly of use in times of civil instability, if not home defense. That's why the military uses them.
We have to be clear: with these weapons comes the need for responsibility, so in my view things like licensing of new weapons is not a bad thing. They should not be sold to people who are convicted felons, or clearly mentally unstable.
The guy that did the Virginia Tech shootings, for example, should not have been able to buy those guns.
Some restrictions are not a bad thing, but they need to apply to people that have SHOWN a reason for us to mistrust them. Normal, law abiding citizens, should be able to own what they want.
And in point of fact, since several people mentioned the shooting in LA, that guy was, if I'm not mistaken, a convicted felon, which meant that his possession of a gun was ALREADY illegal.
The statistics are clear: as gun ownership goes up, crime goes down. There are apparently many parts of rural America where everybody carries a gun everywhere. Nobody shoots anybody, and anybody that wanted to commit a crime would find it hard to get away with it.
I will add, too, that the importance of gun ownership has not diminished since the Constitution was written. Then, as now, they feared civil unrest and criminality. Homesteaders had to defend against Indians, and criminals. We had anti-Irish, and anti-Semitic riots. Life then, as now, was potentially dangerous, even if not always manifestly so.
Guns, as the most efficient means of self protection were understood then--as we understand now--to be essential for a free people involved in the project and experiment of self governance.

Neil, I've been a rugby player for 19 years and played on US territorial select sides in my later years. If I had known what CrossFit could do for me then as I do now, I have no idea where my game could have gone.
I concur: I think the #7 is one of the toughest athletic positions to fullfil in all of sport. Second maybe to Lance Armstrong working the Pyranees ahead of the peloton, I am not sure a more rigorous, sustained work rate position and sport exists (except the blindside flanker #6). For the physical contact and cardio, I offer that a lacrosse midfielder may approach the same workrate, but as in hockey, they can substitute off the field/ice to recover momentarily.
It's a fun argument and one that can be fought for years without any resolution. As an old rugger, I push myself now through CrossFit, dream about what coulda/shoulda abck in the day, and wonder aloud how many national-level players train in this format to achieve the success they enjoy.

If we were to have an anti-Muslim riot, would Muslims not be better off with guns? What is the problem exactly? What is "telling"?
In my view, Muslims need to reevaluate their own religion, keep what is genuinely good, and discard what is corrupt and evil. As in the Common Law tradition you have mentioned before, this can be done without rejecting the past--or in this case the Koran.
It can be done through an ijtihad conducted through an understanding of the manifold goods that political liberalism brings, which enables new understandings of sacred texts, and a renewed focus on the genuinely enlightened parts of the Koran.
To be clear, I am not arguing that SOME Americans should be able to own guns. ALL of them who have shown the desire to submit themselves legally first and foremost to our Constitution should be able to own guns.
If you are calling for the subversion of our Constitution, then obviously you should NOT be allowed to own a gun. You should, in fact, be jailed or deported. Innocent until proven guilty though. If guilty, however, then consequences.
This is called justice in most parts of the world, although the notion of punishing the guilty for being guilty appears to be incomprehensible to some parts of our political spectrum, unless the crime is a thought crime.

I'll my own note on that, that that role is only necessary in a condition in which the propaganda foisted on our children in the educational system is effective in undermining all the ideas which have worked historically.

I want this to be clear: the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT holds the mortgages to, or has guaranteed (is liable for) 2.2 TRILLION in home loans.
How did we get to this point? Does something not have to change to keep the Government from running every last aspect of our lives?
In my view, what needs to happen is Republicans have to start being Conservatives again. Not Democrats who tax a little less. Conservatives. Fiscal Conservatives. Political Conservatives, who believe that government is best which governs least.
Now, the concern is always: can we get elected on this platform? My response is: who cares? The simple fact of the matter is that we already have a Democratic Party. They are acting precisely the way we expect them to. They are spending much too much, getting the Government involved in far too many things (making Jefferson roll in his grave), and conducting a foreign policy that is between inept and overtly counter-productive. That's what they do.
But Republicans haven't been much better. We have to stick to our principles, and if we can't get elected, and country goes to hell, at least we didn't contribute to it.
And, in my honest opinion, Republicans who stick to their principles CAN get elected. It's Republicans who look, smell, and quack like Democrats who create the trouble.
We need to start sounding more like Barry Goldwater. Again, maybe that will scare a lot of people, but--perhaps naively--I believe that ordinary Americans will have seen enough of Democratic policies by the end of Obama's term that they will be ready for a REAL change.
Note: this is not a desire for Obama to fail. It is a PREDICTION he will fail. It would be wonderful if he could pull off all he promises. Truly. If he could make everything better, make us wealthier, happier, and more secure, that would be great. It would be wonderful if I could fly, and breathe underwater, too. I just don't expect it to happen.
So there is no need to root for the demise of his policies, merely to have an action plan. It appears likely to me that we will soon be teetering on the edge of bankrupcy, even if his soft-headed foreign policy doesn't create a security loophole that is successfully exploited. In that case, I'm not sure it's the edge we will be looking at.
I say this over and over, but there are cause and effect relationships in this world. You can study history as a laboratory of what works and what doesn't. Even economics responds to this analysis.
And on that basis, we are going in exactly the wrong direction. Remember this when the hens come home to roost in a few years. And if they don't, then thank God I was wrong. In this case, I would LOVE to be wrong. Honestly.

Truth be told, nothing would make me feel safer or more secure than knowing that everyone around me had a firearm. This is because I know that the people who might actually decide to injure of kill me are rare, on the order of .01% of the people I see regularly. So, for example, if one of my coworkers decided to go ballistic and shoot the place up, he'd be facing thirty armed individuals, instead of (as is generally the case) a room full of screaming targets. It just makes sense.
