Since I haven't workout in the last 3 days, would it be a good idea to replace the push ups by dips ?

I usually like to stick to the plan but I feel I could use more work than push ups.

Thanks !

Day 24 post-op

Physical therapy with Chris at 11:30AM-12:30PM. Moved into an active flexion ROM an isometric external rotation, and an isometric internal rotation exercise. Added 3 new exercises to my 2x daily PT exercises:

Lying broomstick raise: start lying down with a broomstick held with a double pronated grip, arms straight, and stick at thigh level. Raise the stick with straight arms as far up as I can without sharp pain, and back down to thighs. 10 reps.

Internal isometric: bend elbow to 90 degrees, and push on a wall with your palm gently, hold for 5 seconds, relax, repeat for 10 reps.

External isometric: bend elbow to 90 degrees, and push on a wall with the back of your hand gently, hold for 5 seconds, relax, repeat for 10 reps.

12:30 PM: DL WOD

Modifications:

1-arm Deadlift done with a 15 kg Olympic standard bar for women's competition (easier to grip due to it having a smaller diameter), bar in standard DL starting position with grip between the shins.

5:30 PM:

Flinched wrong and braced with my left shoulder. Pain in the surrounding areas of the shoulder. Ouch. Followed this incldence with a round of the PT exercises, Advil 800 mg, and 20 min of ice. ROM is okay, pain is clearly increased. Sucks.

Doing it right - healing it up ONCE!

Comment #27 - Posted by: Rookie - Crossfit Gold Coast at March 2, 2009 7:17 PM

love that the 1000th affiliate is in Philly:) Tomorrows WOD, last time I hung out with Barbara, I remember lying on the gym floor for 30 min after praying that the world would either end or just stop spinning. Hmmm...

Herm-what types on GH mobs has your PT performed? Research encourages some grade I or II early on to facilitate pain control and improve joint circulation. Have they done any mobs on your scapulae too? My personal twist I provide to my patients b/c some many have tight lats and serratus anterior that a couple scapulae mobs makes a wonderful difference.

Not trying to say one way is better than another, I just hate to see a fellow colleague in "bad" pain. Keep up the great work you are performing so far!!

Comment #28 - Posted by: Dan @ warminster, pa at March 2, 2009 7:25 PM

Just wanted to say "Thanks" to Crossfit St. Louis for hosting the O'lifting Cert with Coach "B". What an incredible weekend, we were fortunate that Coach B had a staff of National Level Competitive Lifters with him to help instruct us. The entire training session was phenomenal and we had a blast. Coach Burgener is truly a master and my ass is kicked (I'm Old)but if you have the opportunity I highly recommend you attend this Cert! Thanks again Coach B.

OK - I am new at this and still just learning the ropes of the WODs. 20 Pullups I'll have to do in sets of 5 do I just keep at it until I get 20 done for each set? Whatever time it takes? Thanks for any feedback....

just wanted to let share with all over the weekend I did the crossfit kettlebell level one cert. this weekend at the blackbox in NYC, Jeff Martone is a freakin great, humble and a extremely funny dude! very well versed...very cool man.

thank you black box and staff for being such great host. Its was a honor to meet Hari,Court,Allison,Jascinto, and Brian. You guys were really cool down to earth people. Court, and Jacinto-you are the man!! Nice crew came down, if anyone is thinking about it and has any doubt-its another awesome cert. Jeff is hands down one of the best kettlebell bells instructors and with his humor he made the time pass snd learning much more fun. they really work had to make sure you get the technique down. the staff that came down to help Jeff, Mike, Keith, Melissa and Ray all had a great eye at picking up on these little things to tweak the missing elements that really help you get it-most of all they were all very patient. :)

I got to meet to other crossfitters and that made it even nicer....thank you all, trainers, staff and everyone there it was a great pleasure meeting you.A wonderful learning experience. I wish i would've gotta around more to meet the rest of you. good luck to all in your endeavors!

Come down soon for a fun wod with us!

be safe,

I moved my hands closer together on the bar. I, too, had some shoulder issues due to sports overuse. However, when I move my hands a little closer together for pullups, I can kip w/o it hurting.
Hope this helps.

I want to echo what Lisa says in her post about the Kettlebell Cert this past weekend at CrossFit NYC (The Black Box). What a great crew Jeff Martone assembled for this Cert. It was a fun two days and Jeff made it that way with his sense of humor (Martoneisms) and, more important, his leadership by example. Jeff made sure to demonstrate each move multiple times using 70 lb KB's. He easily could have used a lighter weight, but it's those details that inspire. All I can say is that it was a pleasure to work with such a talented and professional crew. I also want to mention the crew at the Black Box. You guys made it a lot of fun as well. If you have not ventured to the Black Box, it is a trip. I arrived in the city on Friday night and wanted to check out the facility ahead of time to make sure I wouldn't get lost. So here I am on 26th street in Manhattan trying to locate the place, when I noticed a bunch of people running down a flight of stairs and heading out into the street to run. It dawned on me that these people had to be CrossFitters because who in their right mind would be out running in mid-town Manhattan on a Friday night? Yup, it was those crazy CF'ers doing the Friday WOD. Anyway, I had a great time, and met some truly great folks - Lisa, George, Keith, Melissa, Mike, Ray, Allison, Court, Torch, etc....Thanks!

Had my first experience with coaching/training someone today. I took him through Cindy and he did great! Training someone is hard and anxiety provoking. Teaching someone helps with your own mastery, and I am psyched to start down this road!

Strict dead hang pull ups
Thigh, chest, and chin to the floor push ups
I don't have an abmat, but I did use a 45#plate to anchor my feet
air squats

1: 4:04
2: 3:58
3: 3:55
4: 4:55
5: 4:57

Total: 20:29 (without rest) 32:29 (with 3min rest intervals)

**I figured I would include both, considering some people are only including their time without rest it appears.

I could've done better I think had I done kipping pull ups, but I wanted to see how well I could do going the strict dead hang route. Situps slowed me down the most though.

Last time I bonked on round 3 and had to do pushups from the knees for the remaining rounds.
Previous: 3:55, 5:41, 7:37, 6:00, 5:45

Today it was as RX'd until I met pukie for the first time.

Round 1: 3:33
Round 2: 4:52
Round 3: 5:34
Round 4: 6:10
Round 5: 15 pullups then pukie!

I think i drank to much water and the butterfly kips and sit ups brought it back up for a 2nd visit.

A lot of people out there doing all 5 rounds sub 3:00... you guys are truely inspiring... crazy, but inspiring!

What am I going to do ...

Threw up after round 3 and couldn't complete the WOD. Pullups are way to tough for me right now. I'm going to have to scale the WODs where there is pullups.

Losing 10 pounds would also be suited. Will add some cardio at the end of WODs, when I feel I can do it !

Question :Would it be a good idea to work on regular pull ups and make it to 15 before considering working on kipping pullups ?

Thanks for your answers !

When this came up in Jan, I scaled it to 20 knee pushups and 30 jumping pullups since I wanted more work on the pullups and less on the pushups.

This time I attacked Barbara with 10 kipping pullups and 30 knee pushups, everything else as Rx'd. I had a fear I'd be at this until Saturday if I attempted each round with 20 full pullups, but I probably could have done it. Next time!

S’more- Congrats!!

Sunday- run 10k

Today: Helen
35# KBS/ Asst pull ups
= 10:47, PR

Gym slammed today. dodging the “pedestrians” on the indoor track.

Went Right over to do DL. However, you know that feeling when you first wake up in the morning and if you tried to write something but you just can’t make your hands work? This was my hands after Helen, along with being pretty nauseous so it was a little tough to do them so back to back

DL 185x2-205-215-225-230 (tied PR)- 230F (actually just gave up and dropped it)

LOL, I was calling myself a dork. When I do met-cons hard, I have a hard time counting after awhile. When I go for ME, I have a hard time adding. Then I panic thinking I lost all ability to add simple numbers. So when I got 230 (everything got all crazy looking after this lift and slightly black, thought I almost passed out), I looked again and I THOUGHT I had 240 on the bar. I was like Ahh!!! Then I looked and I was late for work, and I was like Ahhh! So when I went up for 230 again, I just dropped it, deciding not to try, still thinking 240 was on the bar.

Very sad today…my mom/stepfather have been staying with me since the beginning of Jan. They left today for home :(

Modifications:

20 reps of BW-112# assist pull-ups
30 reps of 35# DB 1-arm bench press
40 reps of GHD Sit-ups done with arms tucked in, torso parallel to floor
50 reps of BW Squats (unmodified)

Did 3 rounds instead of 5, and kept the rest period at 3 minutes.

Round 1 - 10:16 (took time to set-up anchored sit-ups, felt too easy)

Thanks. This is my third month doing CF, and I feel like I'm starting to get the hang of it.

Coming off a short, violent bout with stomach flu, still too weak to do this girl justice.

Instead, ran 4 min. easy, 2x1 min. striders at 11.0 on the tread, snatch and jerk drills with box jumps, 3x 1HPS-5OHS 95-95-95, PJ 5x3 95-95-115-115-115, FS 4x5 135-185-185-185(ROM deteriorating).

Felt weak throughout, but technique has improved a lot on the OHS making some small improvement possible. OHS and handstands are the two moves I absolutely dread to see coming out of the hopper. Everything else I have at least an uneasy truce with, but I plan to focus on those two moves this month.

Short answer, yes, you are going to all 4 of those exercises 5 times.

Today's WOD will have you cycle through that complete set of 4 exercises 5 times. Time each cycle/ round.

So the WOD broken down looks like this:

Round 1: 20 pullups, 30 pushups, 40 situps, 50 squats - stop & record time it took you to complete this round

then rest 3 minutes

Round 2: 20 pullups, 30 pushups, 40 situps, 50 squats - stop & record time it took you to complete this round

Rest 3 minutes

Etc. for rounds 3, 4, and 5

Make sense?

I have to say, I think this was actually WORSE than Joshua (didn't even think that was possible)! It was great though, after my second set the gym manager (not a CrossFit gym at all) was like "Wow, that was a rough workout today, eh?"

"Haha, three more sets to go..."

Eric- I was a little scared (me asusta) when I started, didn't want to run outta gas, so I took it slow and then keep gearing up. I knew my previous time so that helped keep me focused.

Also my music was kILLEr. Kept me dialed in to that deep well of intensity - no more anger re: you-know-who (who is still texting, thankfully no more cowboy pix) just an amazing amount of ferocity. Is that a word? :)

The sit-ups killed me, especially in Round 3. Abs started to loosen up after that; hence the improved times in the latter rounds.

Call me a hater, call me jealous, call me what you will...but I am calling you out on this. This forum is always positive and encouraging, but sometimes someone posts something that just seems to defy the laws of physics and goes beyond the realm of human performance. Either you are the world's most elite athlete or you are a liar. With a performance like that I expect you to be the CrossFit 2009 champion. Why don't you prove me wrong and post a video of this performance?

They brought up the WOD at TFL! Nice...

Great team effort! There were too many people doing the workout so I doubt the 3 minute rests and I wasn't sure if I was on round 5 or if I was done at the end. Would of been nice to see our round times though but oh well. Only felt like taking a pic of our times (there were still people going after me so not everybody's time was posted up)

First Barbara for me. Worked out at globo with no room and pull-up station too close to wall for me to kip well with my poor form. Would have been Rx'd but ended up having to jump pull ups on last round.

Managed to kip first 10 in a row (PR for reps). Push ups suffered today. Sit ups all unanchored without ab mat. Squats were my best ever - got at least the first 20 reps in each round before having to break reps!
Very pleased, all in all.

MGySgt. USMC M/47/6'2"/205.5

I know there is a method to the madness and since I have not been setting the world on fire with my times I should have just done this WOD as Rx'd. However, I just felt I needed to bump it up a bit today.

I completed this WOD, Barbara, while wearing my 20 Lb vest. I also worked on yesterdays WOD, Dead-Lifts, since I missed out. College class and homework. Did DL during todays 3 minute breaks.

1. 9:40 + 315 Lb DL
2. 11:12 + 325 Lb DL
3. 11:27 + 335 Lb DL
4. 15:51 + 345 Lb DL

Low Back slowed me during the GHD Sit Ups. I slowed down and had a conversation with a fire fighter who was rather interested in what I was doing. He said he had been watching saying, "That's Intense".

5. 11:50 + 355 Lb DL

All Pull-Ups completed via Dead-Hang since I am getting ready for the USMC (PFT) physical fitness test.

My first complete crossfit workout since slamming into a tree snowboarding on 19 Jan. I have a grade 2 tear in my MCL, a minor tear in my ACL, a tear in the Minscus, and a severe bone bruise.
Times were:

Squats were 3/4 of the way to 90 deg to protect the knee.

I look forward to any more guidance on training with injuries. Joe

Previous PR was 31:29. At 22:31, during 4th rd qsquats, I hit a wall and collapsed in a Crossfit enduced breakdown. Totally defeated, but not a quitter, I rested on the gym floor (not quite fetal but I thought about it)and finally completed the last set and round 5 at the 59:16 mark. Control tempo or lay wasted.

"Barbara", as RXd Big Dawgs:

20 Pull Ups
30 Push Ups
40 Sit ups
50 Squats

Resting precisely 3 minutes between rounds, timing each round separately.

1. 2:35
2. 2:18
3. 2:18 ( I know same exact. I dunno how it happened, but it did)
4. 2:34 ( Grip was getting loose on pulls-ups and push-ups sucked this round for some reason)
5. 2:13 (Just let it all go for final round.)

Was an awesome WOD, felt great too.

Whew. Paying for this today. New to crossfit, with not a lot of elite athletic training, so I started small (chopped 10 reps off PUs, pu's, and Situps). Found my times low, and I was feeling alright, so I upped it to Almost Rx (15 Pullups instead of 20). Everything unbroken except the last set off pull ups. Loving Crossfit!

i would seriously question the quality of the reps on the 1:43 per round guy, especially the 1:39 set. i did all sets unbroken, no breathers, with maybe a one second transition time between exercises. this workout was a sintch, yet i only got 2:00 sets. uhhh, that guy has to start going to full arm extention on pull ups, quit doing the popper type push up and start doing more than a little knee bend.

First question, Are you on any nutrition plan ie. Zone, Paleo?
2. How long have you been crossfitting and how hard to you push yourself?

There is a woman's forum online both on a yahoo blog and facebook. to follow are both links. I think you'll find it a great place to ask such questions and more....

This was my first Barbara, but also the first time I have done any of the high-rep pullup workouts without any assist on the pullups - did them dead-hang(maybe a little kip at the end on a couple of them), but was very proud of myself!

They slowed me down on the last couple of sets, but it was very satisfying to have done all of the pullups with my own bodyweight! yay!

Aside from that, pushups were tricep style - with arms to my sides, sit-ups with feet anchored under a couch, and standard bodyweight squats

I have a question about something I don't understand here. When you are listing your times are you saying, for example, that you are finishing the complete round (20, 30, 40, 50) in something like 2:15? Or am I missing something? Because that is ridiculously fast. I am in pretty good shape but my best round was 6:00.

WOD: Barbara Lite: 5 Rounds, each for time of:

•10 Pull-ups

Rest precisely 3 minutes between each round. Post time for each of 5 rounds to comments

Round 1: 4:18 – with push-up bars

Round 3: 5:49 – Knee Push-ups with push-up bars

Sit-ups were a challenge in this WOD. Usually the sit-up is where I gain time and speed.

#677 Chris-

The good thing about a program like this is that there is no point in lying. I can get on here and post a lie that I did a round in 1:00 flat, but what good would that do? If I'm cheating on my ROM or just posting crap to impress people, I am really cheating only myself and my body. We're all here to compare ourselves to our past selves, and that's the point of all of this.

Fairly new to Crossfit, I've been doing the body weight workouts for 2-3 months. I'm finally able to do what is requested. However, I feel like I'm hitting a wall, after the workouts I feel like I could have put more intensity into it. Any suggestion? (I'm in college and work out on my own).

First time taking on "Barbara"

23'57'' to get through it, I know I can go faster now, I felt like I was testing the waters with the first workout. I felt myself taking slight rests between the sets that weren't needed...I can't wait to do it again and see my progression.

I threw in a nice kettleball workout to top my morning off...
10 kettleball swings followed by 1 burpee, then 10 kettleball swings followed by two burpees and so on until i reached 10 burpee's, that combined with 3 rounds of one arm over head walking kettleball lunges was amazing!!

Kipping pull ups, chest-to-floor push ups, anchored abmat situps; squats to D-Ball.

12:22 (2:31/2:25/2:22/2:28/2:36)

Felt pretty good. Form started to deteriorate on the last round. All sets unbroken with the exception of the last set of pull ups (16-3-1).

Also did the following 5 rep sets of back squats:

135/225/270/250

Got below parallel on all sets. Got down to a D-Ball at all weights below 270. Will do some "hold at bottom" squats using 270 next time to develop better depth on this lift.

No CrossFit for Mom and the kids today - they had a scheduled PE class at the YMCA.

Me: 42yo/M/5'10"/174lbs/10%BF

Warm Up: 1/2 mile run to the gym and I can't remember the rest of my warm up...

Barbara: Did not finish, but I have a story :>)

Today I did not have breakfast, but I did have a large cup of coffee, extra strong...

My tummy hurt a little from the coffee so I wanted to get this WOD done quickly so I could get back to my place and drink some milk.

I started Barbara and blasted through the first two rounds without breaking up any of the exercises. At the end of the third round on the last squat I threw up in my mouth, total bile, but the gross part is that I kept it in my mouth until I walked, casually, to the men's room, at which point I completely lost it for about five minutes. After I re-grouped I went back out to the bar and told myself to finish the last two rounds. I jumped up to the pull up bar and felt green. I stopped and stared at the bar for another five minutes before picking up my cr@p, and walking home with my tail between my legs. I did not feel human again for about 2 hours. That's my story and I'm sticking to it :>)

Have Fun, Train Hard,

Billy

Boxing today. Did 3 rounds of Barbara Lite as per brand x, but after the 1st round I subbed 45lb barbell presses for push-ups due to shoulder discomfort.

15-20 minutes of intense catch pad work between rounds.

First week of Crossfit for my wife and I! We love it! We love Barbara, but we hate her to.
