Left shoulder is in a sling for at least 2 weeks. Shoulder rehab is coming!
In lieu of "Cindy," I will be doing as many BW Squats as possible in 20 minutes, while trying not to use my arms at all. This ought to hurt.
Are the one legged squats on Mary the same as pistols?
My arms are sadly sore from yesterday's W.O.D.

Rookie, please don't! I know you are young, but please warm up extra long and MAKE SURE your knee is good to go! Don't unnecessarily wreck your knee! It puts too much strain on your ACL/MCL if you're not 100% on your knee. Trust me, I have seen these injuries happen with pistols.
Try doing "Mary" with regular BW squats.

Well, one of us is happy about "Mary".. Not me but I'll do her anyway..
Yesterday I made up the OH WOD and did one of my own:
Press: 75, 80, 85f, 80, 80, 80. 80 felt easy.. 85 didn't. I'll take it. At least I'm getting some of my strength back. Still about 18# short of my PR
Push Press: 95, 100, 105, 110, 105 (PR 118)
Push Jerk: 105, 110, 115, 120, 125 (F after 3), 125 (F after 3) (125 is my PR by 5 so I'm ok with that)

I was at the gym today doing skill work. Handstands, walking on my hands, L sits, etc. I was sitting in the hot tub after thinking "Next time Cindy or Mary comes, I will do Mary." Seriously, I was thinking that today. I was even thinking of it yesterday when I worked on pistols.
I have done Cindy 3 times. Tomorrow will be the first for Mary. Hittin it hard!

We are all young at heart, and that's what got me in trouble with my shoulder in the first place... "no big deal, the pain will be temporary"... boy was I wrong!
Crossfit is the ultimate time machine/fountain of youth, but as Coach says, CF is very powerful medicine which needs correct dosing. Good decision on the pistols. Be well, brother.
hey guys just a question, im still a little new to crossfit (just over a month) and scale some of the WOD's, not all, just some, thing is, at the time of the WOD during and after i feel smoked, completely worn like it was a great workout, you know? i always think im gonna be tore up the next day, and coincidentally the next day im never sore, really at all, should i stop scaling? any suggestions?

I've never tried Mary -- I think it's time to try.
I have an idea that I think would improve these comment pages for we posters. Perhaps this isn’t really the forum for this discussion – but I didn’t want to just send a letter to Coach and Lauren Glassman before getting the community’s input. I think it’s a keen/swell idea, but others in the Crossfit community might disagree. Hence this post.
The idea: Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to display avatars, show pictures, and have nested comments on these pages? (there are a bunch of free ones that would do the trick: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Internet_forum_software)
*CONS :*
1) If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The site’s worked just fine like this for years.
2) It’ll cost Coach some money to make a change… Even if the posting software is free he’ll probably have to pay his webmaster to install it.
3) Depending on the system, you might have to log in to post. That could be a hassle.
4) Pictures might clutter up the page if filters don’t prevent people from posting ones that are too large.
5) Different software would change the look of the comment pages. And since a good percentage of you are white republicans like me, the very idea of change causes us apprehension and terror. :D
*PROS :*
1) Nested comments: With the current system all posts are chronologically sequential. With nested comments, you could either post normally, or ‘reply to’ someone else’s post, and your post would show up right underneath theirs. I like this idea for the following reasons:
1a) FAQ questions: “Hi, what’s a muscle up?” “What can I sub if I don’t have a row machine?” “So that’s (21+15+9) reps each round?” “I’m confused by the word ‘pood.’” - Every time someone asks these questions there are three or four responses littering the list further down for each time the question is asked. Plus the person who asked the question will have a hard time finding the responses (see next) and sometimes you see them ask the same question again because they didn’t see the responses.
1b) It’s currently hard to search for answers to questions. Maybe #147 asks “What’s the fastest way to heal a torn callus?” if you want to see other people’s answers you can search for “#147” …but chances are that somewhere a post got deleted so the post number changes, so your search doesn’t find an answer. Now if you really want to know, you have to skim through about 300 comments.
1c) It’s also hard to find the question that goes with the answers when posts are renumbered. You read “#45 Ha! I agree 3-2-1 go!” – but that post isn’t #45 anymore. It takes a bit of detective work to find the post they were originally referring to.
1d) With most forum software, you can have the site email you if someone comments or replies to your post, answering your question. Or if they had a question about your post. How handy would that be?
1e) With nesting, off topic conversations would be bundled together. If you’re interested in the following discussions, you can read them all at once to get the story. If not, you could just skip them:
- The song in that video swears and I’m offended / Stop whining, we’re all adults
- Some journalist wrote an article that says Crossfit’s dangerous / They’re dumb, we rule!
- I have an inspirational Crossfit story / Yes, that is an inspirational Crossfit story
- I’m going to be in X city tomorrow, who wants to work out with me? / (no response)
- I hear Gym Jones is great, just like Crossfit / Mark Twight is the devil incarnate
2) Avatars. Having a picture of the user (or their favorite icon) next to each post would help build recognition in the community. Tom/34/6’/185lbs might only post once a week, but if every post has his picture next to it then it helps us all remember him. I think that with avatars people will be more aware of other people’s progress and personalities. Most people are visual, and having an image to associate with a person makes the info stick in the ol’ noodle.
3) Pictures. I think it would be cool if we could post pictures. If given the option, I think there would be a few people posting before/after photos, and it would help to further inspire the rest of us. Plus you’ve got people posting all the time about something they built for their garage gym – I wouldn’t mind it if they could show us what those things look like.
That’s my piece.

I agree with #44, it would be useful to have comments using a forum system (nested, ratings, collapse/expand), easier for searching in the future. I imagine some people would be annoyed at having to login but it does have its upsides.
Watching that video at the FilFest with my huge CrossFit Family I was filled with pride for the blessing of being a part of something so amazing and powerful. Thank you Coach and Lauren ! I think those are all good ideas. Especially the nested comments, and I think Avatars are good ideas too. It would make it easier to check OPT's times if you could just scroll through and find an avatar. There is something to be said for the simplicity of the current format however.
But I think overall it would be worth somebody looking into. Dealing with the FAQ's with the nested comments is a good idea....I wonder if there is another way to deal with this...like maybe put a header under the "Post a Comment" section that says something like *Before you post questions please check the FAQ*. Maybe that could work, but then again I think it adds to the community if people ask questions and real people doing crossfit take the time and answer them...then again sometimes it gets a bit old seeing 'what's a pood?'
BTW the "Some journalist wrote an article that says Crossfit’s dangerous / They’re dumb, we rule!" line is Golden! lol.

"Cindy" and "Mary", the evil twins of CF, arriving as a pair with some regularity, approachable and feared (rightly) by both newcomers and pros. Did you know that there are two teenagers in Ramona, CA who have Cindy scores in the 30's? Speaking of Ramona, consider visiting BrandX if you haven't done these yet for a reasonable way to scale them.
"Cindy": 5 PU--you've been doing PU all month. Scale these just like all the rest. Record what you did so that you can compare the next time she comes around. Doing "Cindy" as Rx'd is one of the first achievable milestones available to us mortals. Same thing with the push-ups. Squats = air squats: no weight on your shoulders, just you.
"Mary": 5 HSPU--there was a great link a couple of days ago on HSPU subs and progression. No, I'm NOT going to give you the link. You're a big kid and it's important that you learn how to find it on your own. It's still on the front page. 10 one-legged squats--that's 10/round. 5 right leg, 5 left leg. No, it doesn't matter if you do 5 with one then 5 with the other or 1R/1L etc. Do 10. 15PU, same as "Cindy". And no arguing about kipping vs. straight. No one cares what you choose to do; the default PU on CF is STILL the kipping PU. It's a power thing...
FWIW, entry to the big-dog club is 20 rounds of "Cindy" as Rx'd and 10 rounds of "Mary" as Rx'd. That means no subs and no assist.

Hey everyone, I just read a thread in the forum where Josh Everett discussed his training routines. Highly recommend it.
Josh, if you read this what sports did you play in college? I'm just curious because the only people I have ever known to workout like that are wrestlers and track and field athletes with an occasional football player.
Damn. Before I read any post to this thread I would just like to say that the video inspired me. Not only from the realization that soooo many people benefit from CrossFit; but also that Coach G has essentially built this from scratch. As a former Air Force NCO turned Officer after getting my paper in Kinesiology, turned civilian, I can't tell you how much respect I have for Coach and all who have helped him get to where CrossFit is today. I can only hope that my entrepreneurial spirit can get me half as far in the fitness industry.

would like to say that other than the 4 or so affiliates in Mississippi, that this state is slowly catching on to crossfit. At drill this weekend, I discovered the state is paying for soldiers to go to the Level 1 cert at Crossfit Hattiesburg (thanks guys!) in March. I almost Passed out!!! I had been preaching crossfit for the past year, and finally someone is listening...I was floored to hear that others are finally catching on. Just in time for deployment.

Jim, count me on board with the approval of the changes. At first I thought your idea was stupid because i skimmed and saw "avatars" and thought of stupid chat rooms I went in as a young teenager (I associate things oddly sometimes.) But, I digress, after I read it, it sounds awesome. I agree with everything you said about the nesting. I find it hard to navigate the comments sometimes, though I do it anyway because the advice on here is worth looking around for. We'll see if Coach buys off on it, which he should. Your idea is well thought out, as opposed to the constant "why don't we just get a different comments section and leave this for times" type of comments that I love oh so much.

That evolution video is just about the greatest thing I've ever seen. Big time congratulations to the people that produced that, great content, style, and production.
Makes me want to go do Cindy again and I just finished two hours ago.
I just wanted to say thank you again to all of the trainers at the Level 1 Cert at Crossfit Montclair this weekend. Your knowledge and passion for all things Crossfit made the two days fly by and made me wish we could have a week-long cert.
To those on the board that have not had a chance to attend a Level 1 Cert I highly recommend it if possible. While there is a vast amount of information about Crossfit and the movements and philosophy and methodology available, nothing can replace the dynamic experience of the cert. Videos are certainly a great way to see and learn the foundational movements, but in order to gain a better understanding of the movements nothing beats seeing someone go through rep after rep, both good and with faults, right in front of you, and then having that person work you through the movement to reinforce everything that was said. Add to that the opportunity to listen to, and ask questions of, people like Pat and Chuck and all of the other trainers, people who fill Crossfit with an immeasurable amount of life and spirit, you will leave the cert not only ready to attack the next WOD, but ready to, and wanting to, spread the word of Crossfit to everyone you meet. I am glad to say that I actually did have an opportunity to introduce someone to Crossfit within an hour of leaving the cert, and I could not stop talking about everything that I had learned.
If any of you are interested in taking your Crossfit experience to the next level, both for personal goals and for helping others in the Crossfit community, the Level 1 Cert is a great step to accomplishing those goals.

I felt really good...well at least as good as one can feel when going through one of these workouts. My lower back and lower abs needed a little break after this past cycle of workouts.
I need to work on my HSPU so that I can try Mary eventually.
Just as a sidebar, there was a couple of people who came up to me as I was doing this workout and asking me questions along the lines of "you sure are working hard aren't ya?" and I all I could do was grunt. Big difference from the body building workouts where you could actually converse with people...but I love it!

First time so I know I can do 12 or 13 next time.
Funny... Not being able to do HSPU's was the reason why I found Crossfit. Now that was the easiest part of the WOD. I have never done more than 10 pistols total in one day and I was usually hurting. Today after the first round, I was in the grove. Muscles feel great. I do something in between the butterfly kip and a regular kip. I use way less energy that way. Every PU round was unbroken.
I never mentioned this, but I work out in Truckee at 6500' elevation.
Rock climbing at the gym today after work. Yeah!
My wife says I workout and do too many sports and we are going to go broke. I'd rather try to do too much fun stuff and go broke than not.

Did Cindy today. My third time. I wanted to give Mary a go but talked myself out of it. I still don't have the kip and 15 sucky pull ups each round would have killed my intensity. So,19 rounds. Not the best, but I increased one round from december and stopped the clock at 19:06.

Thanks, after I haven't seen any progress with my old workout, I figured I'd give this a try. Plus my buddy who I worked with in Iraq started this when he was in Afghanistan and showed me the progress pics, I was amazed. I hit my goal of 315 max bench, so it's time to change and move away from lifting. I have been watching videos, reading almost everything on here which is motivation itself.

As for their software, those are nice in that they have avatars, but the splitting comments across multiple pages prevents people from reading deeper into the comments. I like the one-page comments the way they are now. Plus those sites have avatars are huge and take up a lot of space (especially if the post is only a few words).
I just imagined something streamlined like we have it now, just with a small avatar and the ability to 'reply to this post.'
Oh, and I'm glad some of you enjoyed the inside crossfit jokes I threw in there. It was a long post, so I figured I'd make it entertaining while I made my point.

That "Evolution" video is probably the most kick-ass thing I have ever seen...as a XFit rookie, it's truly eye-opening at the current effects and unlimited potential of this Sport...
Quick question for those on Zone: Are kidney/black beans OK for carbohydrate blocks? I know they are in the favorable of CFJ 21 but recent search of forums lead me to believe they are not (not just from the Paleo folks). They are such a great tasting and easy substitute to a plate full of veggies is why I'm asking.

Had to blast out 33 solo high C's (don't be confused, was singing in a run of a rock musical, and trust me, hitting those notes is incredibly difficult to do) this past weekend, so I am just starting up again since last Thursday. I also get from everyone... "I want to look like you" Then I tell them what I do and most drop it. I have only converted a couple people so far. Most would rather spend 2 hours in the gym on the elliptical and doing curls, etc.
I am getting so close to challenging all the "big" guys in my gym to a lifting contest at lifts they do every day and I never do... just to prove my point.

Well, I read a few earlier posts and several seemed to be taking on their “least preferred” girl workout. Sooo…I opted for Cindy. I like Mary lots and have with with it, and I actually get very nervous about Cindy (even more so than I already do on all of them, ha ha). So much so, I did not do Cindy at all last year so the last time was in 2007. I believe my PR was 23 or 24 rounds, amt of asst on pull ups then is unknown. I will have to look it up later. I will want to make up Mary soon though because it is a favorite.

I have X-fitting for over 1 year and my times/reps are usually about the average of what's posted. My problem is with CINDY. I feel like I'm hitting it super hard and not breaking, but my PR is 16.6 rounds. I see that many are doing 20+ rounds. Whats the secret, if there is one?
I was thinking about trying to do pushups and squats right under the pull up bar to eliminate any excess time moving between "stations" that I set up in my home gym. Any other suggestions?

I do my Cindy right at the pull up bar. I don't move anywhere. That's a big time saver right there.
Can you kip? Once I learned the kip it was on. Pullups take about 10 seconds max on Cindy for me now.
On my pushups I practically hyperventilate. I breathe so hard and heavy that I exhale spit on the floor. Exhale hard on the way down and inhale hard on the way up.
I try and explode at the top of my squats and find myself jumping off my heels occasionally. If I need a second to breathe I do it during squats.

I pushed pretty hard. I'd say I gave a good 90-95% (I'm sick of all this 100% and 110% talk. 100% = death/hospital after completing the last rep).
I say ~95% because I think I could have got 19 rounds if I was offered a million dollars, but I think I would have died trying if had to get 20.
I did Cindy last time, back in December - so I tried Mary this time.
Definitely tougher for me. HSPUs were challenging, even with legs on the wall - I started full ROM but was 90% ROM thru most of the workout. Maybe not quite 90% on the last set. Pistols were really hard from a balance perspective. So I did them 5-and-5, but I was using my hand on the wall to balance myself. Pull-ups took the longest - my first 2 sets were unbroken, but it was tough to string more than 5 or 6 together after that.
Results: 6 rounds, + 5 HSPUs + 10 pistols + 6 pull-ups

I did Cindy with pull-ups on an assisted chin/dip machine (assistance level 13) got 10 rounds and 5 pull ups. This is a PR for me. Last time I got 9-2/3 rounds with a pull up assistance level of 15. Pull-Ups are the limiting factor for me in this and a lot of other WODs. I am trying to finish my garage gym so I have somewhere that I can practice and learn to do a kipping pull up.

Shortly after my husband started doing CrossFit 3 years ago, we spent LOTS (!!) of money on equipment. Initially I was a bit disappointed because it meant I wouldn't be getting my living room furniture updated anytime soon. I figured I'd move the GHD & the Bench upstairs when we had company coming. Dynamx balls are pretty comfy to sit on too. :) Here we are years later and our investment in the equipment has been the best money spent in a long time. (I still don't have that new living room furniture either.)
We both are CrossFitters, we are finalizing CF affiliation and like you ... are happier spending lots of money and being able to do a lot fun stuff.

Felt like being upside down today, so I opted for a first encounter with Mary and OLS for that matter. Is it bad that the majority of my female friends are XFit workouts?
11 rounds even and two hefty blisters under the callouses, so I'm sure it'll be all about pull ups this week.

Time to run the dog in the sunshine -- this in between seasons BS is starting to get old. Winter or spring, not Sprinter please. Then some yoga to wind down the day.

I just started cross fit last week. I got 19 rounds in on this one. Some at my gym are saying that I'll lose all my hard earned muscle mass with a program like this.

Been working out for about 3 years and doing Crossfit for the last 5 weeks.
First time doing Cindy today....17 rounds even.

WOD - Feeling Mary (1st ever) 8 full rounds [50y/m/11st/70"]
So maybe someone asked this already but I didn't feel like reading all the comments (which I guess is support of the nested comments feature). I've never tried Mary but have done Cindy. Should I try and improve my Cindy score or should I try a new WOD in Mary? Thoughts - Herm, Bingo, JPW, Apolloswabbie, anybody?

I tried to improve on "Cindy" 2 times before I ever attempted to do a 1-legged squat. If you can do 1-legged squats decently, you can try "Mary", but it won't be much of a WOD metcon wise if you cannot get the squats done quickly. If you are good at HSPU and 1-legged squats, give Mary a go.
If you still cannot decide, how about if you do a 20 minute AMRAP consisting of both Cindy AND Mary? Start off doing Mary, then once you reach 10 minutes, switch off to Cindy and try to match at least half of your Cindy PR.

Tried what Lube suggested - slow down the pace but take no rest in between rounds. So would do 5 rounds straight thru at about :40 per round, marking each on a piece of paper after. Then, after each 5 round set, I'd take 10-15 breaths and then start again. While the end result wasn't much different, I felt like I wasn't pushing as hard until very late in the 20 minutes. I think that if I keep up the pace from the first 10 rounds during the last 10 rounds, I can hit 24 rounds next time.

I've only recently been introduced to CrossFit in the last few weeks. My first session was a Tabata run by the ROTC at my school. It destroyed me. Today I attempted Cindy, the first WoD I've tried on my own. I'm overweight, out of shape, and have a ruptured L5-S1. I had to switch to knee push ups about 5 minutes in and did weight assisted pull ups the whole time. At 20 minutes I could hardly move an inch but as I lay there panting I could say I did it. 11 rounds and I did it. CrossFit you rock.

Hurt Back from the catching my last jerk in a funky position yesterday. So I modified my Cindy a little.

Dead Hang Pull-Ups (kipping hurt) - after 3 rounds B assisted me.
Push-Ups ( really had to focus on staying in a total plank because any drop in my hip hurt)
Squats (My back didn't slow me down at all on these.)
Then Later On:
3 strict Muscle Ups. No kip at all and easy full lockout at the top. They're back! It must be all the dip work I've been doing and the Zone. I'm stoked.
Pistol Practice. They're good but tweak my back a little so I didn't do too many of them.

Tried a different timing scheme, but it's not what I'm looking for. Best still seems to be to start a new round every 55s, as this is the only approach that's every gotten me past 20. I was getting rounds done in 35-40s through 10, then hit the pushup wall.
At first, I was held up by general lack of glycolyotic energy pathway fitness, and pullups. After getting more 'glycofit' and learning to kip, it was squats that slowed me. Now it is pushups. As you improve any element, it puts more pressure on the others since you return to them faster. Fascinating. Paul

I know how you feel. When I nailed my first muscle up my wife couldn't have cared less. At first I tried to get her to do it with me but she wouldn't have anything to do with it.
After watching me stay with it for 2 1/2 years and getting sick of people asking me how I stayed in such great shape, she took the plunge.
She still won't let me coach her but she does work out utilizing crossfit methodology. She has now stayed with it for a year and loves to tell her friends about it.
She was talked into going to a big box the other day to do a workout with a friend. The minute she came home she started ragging on the instructor and the morons in the class, not to mention the idiots at the big box.
So, hopefully I'll be able to set up some coaching sessions for her with Jodie at Front range crossfit for her birthday.
We're proud of you, stick with it and your hubby may just come around.

This is HUGE to me and I just wanted to thank the whole crossfit community. I've been on it 1-1/2 years and could not do more than 2 pullups when I started. Now I'm in the best shape of my life due to hard work and an awesome program.

I've gotten the "I want to look like you/What do you do??" comment as well. I explain the concepts of Crossfit and people tend to be unable to wrap their head around it. At least those that are my age anyway. They're too stuck on popular thought, Muscle&Fitness, split routine training styles and it's a sad thing to see. However i have had my successes as well thankfully!

Thank you to all of the trainers at this weekend's CrossFit Level 1 Cert at Guerilla Fitness. It was an absolutely incredible weekend. Pat and Chuck are two of the most polished presenters I have ever come across (and I see a lot of them in the corporate world). They were not only incredibly knowledgeable, but they were extraordinary communicators. EC, Dennis, Mike, Jenn and Joe were also great teachers/critics/motivators. Oh -- and monster CrossFitters.
As a new CrossFitter, I learned a lot and also got my butt kicked -- what more could you ask for. I needed a rest day after a weekend of: Tabata Squats resting at the bottom (11); Fran modified to 75# (6:47); Seagrams 7&7 (16); and a 500m row (1:38) in addition to hours of practicing SQ, FS, OHS, SP, PP, PJ, DL, SDHP, MBC, snatch, MU, GHD, C&J, etc.
Worth every penny and then some! You will see me at another cert in the very near future.

First time doing this workout. The Rob Miller clip doing Mary at 7,000 feet (http://media.crossfit.com/cf-video/CrossFit_MillerDoesMaryAt7000.wmv) demonstrated the kipping handstand pushup. The technique really works and is pretty easy to learn. The pistols were pretty awkward for me. I did them with no hands and no assistance but to a 10" plyometric box. Rounds 1-7 were completely unbroken but that changed in rounds 8 and 9. With a little more work on my handstand pushups and my one-legged squats I think I can get 10 rounds - my goal for the next time.
After recovering I worked on my overhead squats. I used increasing weight until my form began to fall apart. My shoulder flexibility is improving and my form is getting better, but I still need a lot of work on this skill. I will continue to work on the overhead squat until I master it.

I think the CCP knew that Crossfit was coming and prepared for my arrival. There are more pull-up bars and dip stations in this country per-capita than a FOB (ok well at least more than in a regular US city). Learn from their mistakes while identifying their strengths. Observe, acquire, adapt. That's why I'm here.

Been doing Crossfit for a little under 3 months now. Cindy was one of the first workouts I attempted, so was glad to see her come up again to compare.
First time - 17 rounds, but was switching grips on the pull ups just to get them done and using a box to climb up to the bar by the end. Push ups were decent but not chest touching the ground.
This time - 19 rounds + 5 pull ups and 9 push ups. Oh so close to 20, but overall happy with how it went. No need for the box anymore and cranked out butterfly kip pull ups all the way through without needing to switch grips. Push ups were what did me in again, but these were all chest to the ground. Next time will be in the 20's while keeping full range of motion.

CrossFit has done more than make me more physically fit; it has made me mentally and emotionally stronger. It has helped me to become the Father, Husband, Soldier, and Trainer that I have always hoped I could be.
