Comment #2 - Posted by: mikeySFV at December 29, 2008 7:24 PM

By far #1 best experience of this year was committing to the CF program. Changed my life completely. Worst experience was getting arrested for a 4yr old warrant. Thank God Case was dropped.

Comment #3 - Posted by: mikeySFV at December 29, 2008 7:27 PM

Well what a year 2008 has been.

The best experiences by far was getting Certified in Sydney and meeting Coach, Nicole, Dave and the rest of the crew and opening my affiliate. Hands down the best thing I have ever done.

The worst would probably be Eva on Xmas Eve. Just kidding. Not too many bad experiences this year just many different challenges.

Looking forward to a great 2009 and meeting more great Crossfitters on here and in person.

Cheers,

Rookie

Best moment of the year: Opening Triangle CrossFit's new box just south of Raleigh, NC, and making a lot of great new friends.

Worst moment of the year: Losing a few old friends. Rest in Peace, brothers.

Comment #5 - Posted by: Clay H. at December 29, 2008 7:28 PM

Experiences of 2008 - is this purely crossfit experiences or any experience (i.e. family, work, financial, spiritual...)?

Comment #6 - Posted by: Greg at December 29, 2008 7:29 PM

Was wondering what the panel's thoughts were on coffee. I know a few days ago there was a discussion on diet soda but I was wondering about coffee and also the new addition or the natural caffeine taurine (or however you spell it). I only ask because in my line of work we drink and use caffeine like it is going out of style. Thanks for the help.

Comment #7 - Posted by: Adam at December 29, 2008 7:31 PM

My best and worst are all in the same experience. Since starting CrossFit, I have gained a great deal of strength. More noticeable is my gain in mental toughness. I've had a goal of completing the Dobson Trail (a 60km backcountry hike that usually takes 2-3 days to complete) in 1 day. CrossFit helped me attain that goal this summer. It took 12 hours and 7 minutes, with massive blisters, huge cuts and scrapes, a tight IT band that felt like a knife in my knee and a close encounter with some wildlife. There is no way I could have finished the trail if it wasn't for CrossFit. I've always believed in the quote "Whether you believe you can or can't, either way, you are right". My experience confirmed it.

Comment #8 - Posted by: Kevin Wood - CrossFit Moncton (27/6'3/179#) at December 29, 2008 7:36 PM

Worst CF experiences of 2008: spraining my ankle during Angie!

Best CF experiences of 2008: getting certified at the Mecca, CFHQ in Santa Cruz before it closed; meeting Nicole, Annie, Tony B, Coach, etc.; forming bonds with other CrossFitters both at OPT or elsewhere; pushing myself to my limits; and #1 for 2008 - The Games. What a weekend...

Comment #9 - Posted by: gaucoin at December 29, 2008 7:37 PM

Best: doing Fight Gone Bad at Crossfit New York. Or maybe doing Barbara at a globogym with David from Crossfit Brooklyn. Props, David!

Worst: Injuries. Had a glute issue that I recovered from, and a rotator cuff issue that still needs some recuperation.

Comment #10 - Posted by: justinrocks M/35/169/6'1" at December 29, 2008 7:37 PM

Best:
Family ski trip-learned to snowboard finally!
Crossfit level one cert-CF Ripper
Crossfit kids cert-Brand X
Worst:
Slipping a disc and not being able to do a regular WOD since August.
Oldest child getting her driver's permi. Yikes!

So, just from this list, there was more good than bad, so it must have been a good year!

Comment #11 - Posted by: momo-okc at December 29, 2008 7:40 PM

Worst:
Eva or inverted burpees

Best:
Ridiculous gains in 2 months!

Comment #12 - Posted by: Steven Willis (M/21/5'9"/170) at December 29, 2008 7:41 PM

Comment #13 - Posted by: John L at December 29, 2008 7:41 PM

HA. Where do I start? I think I'll sleep on this one.

2008 was a roller coaster filled with tons of excitement and CrossFit adventures. I'll put some thought into it and report back.

Looking forward to reading everyone's answers.

Lows-

Safe New Year to everyone.

Comment #16 - Posted by: bs2103 at December 29, 2008 7:45 PM

Worst = realizing height and CF are not friends. Best = being introduced to a life changing concept. I think back to the days of bicep curls and leg extensions and laugh. Dominate the day.

Comment #17 - Posted by: LA at December 29, 2008 7:48 PM

From a workout standpoint, being a 'Masters' athlete is a just a drag. More injuries, slower recovery, etc. But I have to say that this year I've experienced the grace and wisdom that comes with age in a far more visceral way than ever before. It's truly gratifying.

Thanks again to the Glassman's for all they give us.

Comment #18 - Posted by: John Seiler at December 29, 2008 7:49 PM

Here are my best CrossFit related experiences of the year:

Starting CrossFit

Learning new exercises I had not known before starting this program

Setting new personal records on most of the days I work out.

Helping my friend train for the Ventura County Sheriff's Academy by introducing him to the CrossFit program.

Looking and feeling better than ever before and doing more than I previously thought possible. Thanks CrossFit!

Comment #19 - Posted by: Thomas Baklayan at December 29, 2008 7:50 PM

best experience of 2008, I found crossfit......Thnk you crossfit...

Comment #20 - Posted by: joe at December 29, 2008 7:50 PM

Best: This is my first year crossfitting, so there's a few: 1) Squatting over 200. Felt like I just won the lottery. 2) Learning to jump the full 24". That box looked 6' high the first time, swear to God. 3) Learning to kip. 4) Meeting a great new workout partner who shames (I mean motivates) me into going when I want to collapse.

Worst: 1) The days I was just too busy (or too sick) that turned into the weeks that I was just too busy (or too sick) that turned into feeling generally crappy about my performance and consistency....and having to work back up after time off. 2) The 15K WOD from this summer that I miscalculated the distance of and ran (then jogged, then walked) 18K. Took me 3 f#&@ing hours.

Comment #21 - Posted by: Erica F/29/5'9"/155 at December 29, 2008 7:52 PM

Best - Gauley River, West Virginia. 10th best river in the world for white water rafting.

Worst - Not finding out about CrossFit untill Nov 08, and broken noses.

Comment #22 - Posted by: adam/22/150/6' at December 29, 2008 7:54 PM

Best of 2008:
1. Started CrossFit
2. Lost 30 Pounds
3. Finished the Marine Corps Marathon
4. Got My Level 1 Certification
5. Just Got Affiliated

With a top five like that I guess I forgot anything bad that happened.

Worst: Becoming a morning person to do my training.

Comment #26 - Posted by: Jerimiah at December 29, 2008 7:58 PM

Best- losing 100lbs due to draconian reduction in food intake and consistent Crossfit.

Worst- Not being able to eat like I used to.

Was very very hard please try it

Comment #28 - Posted by: s'more at December 29, 2008 8:03 PM

Without a doubt the coming home from Iraq and bringing my 17 year old MMA-loving son into CrossFit. Pushing each other at the gym everyday is better than any drug could ever be. The physical and cardio changes in us both are next to hella-stupid.

Comment #29 - Posted by: Al at December 29, 2008 8:07 PM

I haven't had a bad day or year since the doctor slapped me on the ass! God Bless!

Comment #30 - Posted by: John-in-Jersey 34/6'0/190 at December 29, 2008 8:07 PM

Best: cancer went into remission. WODs were good.

Worst: cancer came back. WODs not so good, lots of scaling and missed workouts.

Comment #31 - Posted by: Terry at December 29, 2008 8:08 PM

Best was getting into crossfit last Dec.and getting my level 1 cert last March. Worst I can't do a muscle up yet and not being an affiliate yet. But I will this 2009.

Comment #32 - Posted by: dave at December 29, 2008 8:12 PM

Best - My muscle up
Worst - 3 Bars of Death

Comment #33 - Posted by: ken at December 29, 2008 8:16 PM

Worst...Having my boyfriend Jason breakup with me, Losing the Prop 8 battle in CA, and having the industry I work in lose more money than ever before.
Best... Joining CrossFit, getting in-shape, making new friends, electing a new President, going to New York on vacation for Christmas, and reconnecting with a great guy I haven't seen in 3 years.

Comment #34 - Posted by: David Alcaraz at December 29, 2008 8:17 PM

Worst...dealing with bureaucratic, unimaginative, field grades working for that next billet. Nothing new.

Best...catching a 225# clean and then standing up with it, as my 2 1/2yr old son watched.

Better than that...getting my 14 month old daughter to mimic my Tabata Squats and bounce up and down 11 times.

Comment #35 - Posted by: rob/43/225/6'1" at December 29, 2008 8:17 PM

Best: Moments when I touch who I am in my heart. This is not always easy. Writing helps, being fit helps, particular people help. May I keep it going and thanks.

Worst: Who cares.

Comment #36 - Posted by: Arana at December 29, 2008 8:19 PM

Best:

1) i found my passion. crossfit has allowed me to do things i never thought i'd do. never in a million years did i think i'd want to become a trainer, now training my clients is the highlight of my day. watching clients learn a new skill or hit a pr, is probably the coolest thing ever! nothing can compare to the look on their face when they do something they didn't think they could.

2) becoming stronger mentally and physically, the mental part especially; translates into all facets of life.

3) having the opportunity to learn from and work with some of the best trainers out there

4) getting to attend a cert at the old CFHQ in santa cruz, that was just effing awesome.

5) turned 30 and feel stronger and better mentally and physically then i did at 20, all thanks to crossfit.

worst:

1) had to cut back on the wine (damn your robb wolf!) ;-)

nah, all in all it's been a great year, no worsts for me.

thanks greg and lauren!

Comment #37 - Posted by: nadia shatila at December 29, 2008 8:22 PM

Best experience: Seeing a steadily increasing fitness base and the confidence generated due to CrossFit. Oh, and Coach Bergener's olympic lifting clinic, which started a growing love for the fast lifts.

Worst experience: Tearing the labrum in my shoulder on a PR jerk, which has put me out of overhead activities (most of CrossFit) for the foreseeable future.

Comment #38 - Posted by: MB at December 29, 2008 8:23 PM

Best
1) By far was my intro to CrossFit in June of this year. At the time I thought I was fit, NOT!
2) Pushing myself everyday on the wod to improve my time or get more rounds and giving all I've got to push hard on the HERO wod's.
3) Moving to SoCal to be closer to my son.

Worst
1) Doing the Globo Gym thing for the first part of the year. How could I have been so lame?

Comment #39 - Posted by: NavyChief at December 29, 2008 8:23 PM

worst: receiving the call from my father, last March, that my 37 year old kid brother had passed away suddenly of natural causes without any warning signs.

Best:making the commitment to crossfit in May 2008. This has enabled me to enjoy strength training again after many years away (~5years) and feel that for the first time since college (20 years) that I actually have the potential to be as strong and more fit than I was playing football in the Big Ten Conference. I am so excited to see where I am at the end of 2009.

Comment #40 - Posted by: p. l. at December 29, 2008 8:23 PM

I've got a pretty short memory, but highs for my year are date nights with my wife when we can finally get a moment away from the kids. Those are usually the nights I get some action.

Lows - I have diarrhea. Other than that, things are going pretty well. Oh yeah, and I'm always hurt. And the Cowboys suck.

LA, comment 18 - I like that height comment

Comment #41 - Posted by: Andy P 200 pound 6'3" 41 yoa guy at December 29, 2008 8:23 PM

Worst- Death of two very close friends exactly two weeks apart, one to cancer, the other to the rip tides at Cabo. Why do the best people get taken when an endless line of douche bags are allowed to roam the earth.

Best- The historic election, a close friend finally getting custody of a beautiful baby, and new friends I've made due to Crossfit. They are a great bunch of people.

Comment #42 - Posted by: Erik Lilliedahl at December 29, 2008 8:24 PM

That's great. Now my dunmbass comment 42 will forever be sandwiched between Erik's and p. l.'s tragedies.

Comment #43 - Posted by: Andy P 200 pound 6'3" 41 yoa guy at December 29, 2008 8:27 PM

Andy P (#42) - It may have been a dunmbass comment but it reinforced a very valuable lesson for me - -

You guys don't get action every night? Add that to the list of reasons I'm not getting married any time soon.

Comment #44 - Posted by: AllisonNYC_24/5'2/125! at December 29, 2008 8:32 PM

best--getting married and going to Hawaii, graduating med school and landing a sweet internship

worst--Murph...twice.

Comment #45 - Posted by: B.Prendergast at December 29, 2008 8:32 PM

Andy P - No worries. Levity is required. Its one of the best ways to heal the wounds.

Besides Angela and Stephen would be laughing along if they were here.

Comment #46 - Posted by: Erik Lilliedahl at December 29, 2008 8:34 PM

when performing "MURPH" with a 20lb vest do you partition the reps 10, 20 30 for 10 sets or do you do the 100, 200, 300. i read partition the reps as required.

Comment #47 - Posted by: Roger at December 29, 2008 8:34 PM

Comment #48 - Posted by: Kevin Suttmoeller at December 29, 2008 8:36 PM

Best - Being with my family everyday.

Worst - Investments, Housing Market, Stock Market

But the Best makes the Worst not matter at all.

Thanks CrossFit - Wish I would have met you many years ago.

Comment #54 - Posted by: Steven@CrossFitAffliction-Ft Lauderdale at December 29, 2008 8:40 PM

one of the best: finishing OSUT/basic infantry training. one of the worst:not being able to do Crossfit during those ~14 weeks of training..damn that sucked. But im back now and loving it again!

Comment #55 - Posted by: Ramsland m/22/5'10/170 at December 29, 2008 8:41 PM

Worst: Been doing CF only since Nov. 08 and still haven't done ANY lifts, only bodyweight exercises and running.

Best: Having the CF mentality take over my running and b/w workouts, watching my pull-up counts climb, doing more reps and sets than I ever thought possible--and FAST. Good workout variety.

Completing the Annapurna trek in Nepal with a good friend, 17,500+ft. max elevation. And simply sacking up, grabbing the savings, leaving work and going to India/Nepal for 6 months.

Comment #56 - Posted by: Bambolay at December 29, 2008 8:45 PM

Working so hard for the last few months to lay our foundation in NH for a true Crossfit Affiliate, and then finally submitting the application tonight...wish us luck.

Comment #57 - Posted by: Samy at December 29, 2008 8:49 PM

Thanks Erik. I didn't want to be one of those douche bags you mentioned.

Comment #58 - Posted by: Andy P 200 pound 6'3" 41 yoa foot in mouth guy at December 29, 2008 8:50 PM

Best: The birth of my 3rd son and discovering crossfit.

2nd best: Reading a bunch of articles and watching a bunch of instructional videos from Mark Rippetoe(on this site) only to discover that he runs a Crossfit affiliate in my own freaking town! I've joined up and haven't looked back. He's since taken time out of his busy schedule to teach me the proper technique on squat, clean and deadlift. Thanks Rip!

Worst: Not so much---------Everyday is a blessing! God is good!

Comment #59 - Posted by: Jerad Miller at December 29, 2008 8:51 PM

Good- attended K9 Patrol School with partner "Clif"
Bad- wife was in car accident while in K9 Patrol School
Good- wife recovered from minor injuries
Good- attended K9 Narcotic School with partner "Lido"
Bad- daughter was in life threating car accident while I was in K9 Narcotic School
Good- daughter is still recovering and will be for the next year.

Lesson learned for 2009- Stop going to K9 school

A great thank to this community who gets me through my workouts everyday. It helps me keep my sanity!!!!!

Comment #60 - Posted by: bill at December 29, 2008 8:54 PM

Best: Easy. The birth of my son, Padraig. He has been a blessing. That, and being able to watch the most wonderful little girl learn about the world around her. She makes me cry just about every day. Seriously, she does.

Worst: I gotta tell you, I cannot think of a worst. I had a good damn year and I am exceedingly grateful for all that I have. I was able to commit to Crossfit and it has changed my life for the better. I look better, I feel better and I am performing better at every level.

I'm a lucky motherf$#@er.

Out.

Comment #67 - Posted by: Daniel Canon at December 29, 2008 9:34 PM

Best: Finding out about CrossFit

Worst: Not actually starting CrossFit yet. I found out about it two weeks ago. Making up lame excuses to hold off to the new year.

I bought SS, it should be here in the mail any day now. I only wish there was a CF gym in this country.

Comment #68 - Posted by: Andoryu at December 29, 2008 9:51 PM

It is about a gazillion way tie for best experience involving innumerable treasured memories my two beautiful daughters and lovely wife; everyday with them is a blessing. In defense of family/kids/marriage, I can confidently say that family is the most rewarding and fulfilling experience of my life. Three years ago, I was focused on career, digits (and I don’t mean Crossfit scores), and partying with no plans for family anytime soon, if ever. “Life” happened to those plans, and today happier, healthier, and humbler than ever.

In second place for best experience (or close to) is my “discovery” of Crossfit. In fact, I first heard about Crossfit in Muscle and Fitness’ article “Sweat Storm.” Especially conscious of this coverage because of its introductory role for me, I grew increasingly confused about the article the more I learned about Crossfit, given how critical the approach is to so much that Muscle and Fitness promotes. Frankly, my view is it likely that the editor did not research Crossfit before publication. Therefore, I also read references yesterday to “Caveman Training” with much interest. For those of us living overseas, where magazines arrive late – if ever, any less copyright-conscious resources available to satisfy curiosity about what was written?

While perhaps not the “worst experience,” knee surgery last April was a big bummer.

Looking forward, I am excited to improved fitness and health in 2009, with Crossfit enabling these achievements with better planned and more structured programming to achieve these goals. Thanks to Coach and the Crossfit team for all your hard work.

Comment #69 - Posted by: scott_28/m/6'/330 at December 29, 2008 9:52 PM

Best: commissioning, intro to crossfit, every official / non official coach i've worked with since, and a workout routine that is never routine. Worst: another knee injury and no time to fix it.

Worst: Rhabdo; post-CrossFit Level 1 Cert in San Diego. 76,000+ CPK upon arrival at the hospital and 1 week in ICU: Definately worth it (having said that; I've since used better judgement and know when to ease up and recover)considering I've bounced back stronger than ever!

Comment #76 - Posted by: InfidelSix at December 29, 2008 10:26 PM

All I can saw is...135# thrusters/muscle ups. 15/12/9... Most painful thing I've ever done.

Comment #77 - Posted by: Joe Morgan (5'8''/150#/19) at December 29, 2008 10:27 PM

Best: Not too many "highs" this year. The best has been just chilling at home with my brother. Luckily, I get to do this almost every night, and it always makes me happy, no matter how bad my day was. :)

Worst: Leaving my job and not being able to find another one. :( My grandfather dying was pretty bad too, but such is life...

Comment #78 - Posted by: Carrick at December 29, 2008 10:45 PM

Best: working my tail off to get back on the crossfit porch a month and a half after surgery for a liver abscess.

Worst: repeating the same surgery (Dec. 23rd) and losing 15 pounds of muscle (again).

Best for 2009: getting it back again, and hopefully blasting out a few decent muscle-ups so I can stop subbing like a chump! Let's get some...

Comment #79 - Posted by: indo chris at December 29, 2008 10:47 PM

Best: Paramedic school

Worst: Paramedic school

What can I say- that experience left me chunky, out of shape, and broke!
...but much more knowledgeable.

Easing back into CF 2009
Get some!

Comment #80 - Posted by: Tim F at December 29, 2008 10:53 PM

My best experience was learning to snatch and clean this year. The worst was last night when I went to deadlift 300# and pulled a lower back muscle. Now I'm out for a week or two. What a way to start the new year.

Comment #84 - Posted by: gjonbelay at December 29, 2008 11:09 PM

Can't think of any bad experiences. I don't understand the word 'best' very well, as I've got more than one: Every day with my wife Tash and our new puppy, Mischka.

Running a 400 meter in under 60 seconds (I couldn't run on my ankle and hadn't started CF in January, but sub-60 was my goal for 2008.)

Returning to the US, starting a new career as a CrossFit trainer, starting our affiliate CrossFit Litchfield Park.

I'm so thankful for every day that I've got.

Upsides:

Lots more Crossfit: Olympic lifting cert in Feb, volunteering at the Games in July, finding CF Santa Clara and Jason Khalipa in September, being a "test subject" at a Level 2 cert in November...

Sharing CrossFit with my younger 2 kids - leading to Ben (age 10) taking up gymnastics and breakdancing as well, and Catie (age 12) telling me "Mom - you have to make CrossFit workouts mandatory for us so I do at least 3 a week!".. and watching Catie deadlift more than her bodyweight with perfect form..

Meeting new friends through CF, both in person, and in the virtual world (shout out to the Female CrossFitters Yahoo and Facebook groups!).

Downsides:

Leaving the West Coast Martial Arts world, of which I've been a part for nearly 13 years (and through 3 black belts), and not yet finding a new "home" in the self-defense world (looking for Krav Maga and SPEAR system, plus some kickboxing & NHB)

Starting, but not consistently staying with, a Zone-friendly practice.. and not yet committing to a life without Peppermint Mochas.

Still not being at a point where coaching can be a real and regular part of life, even though I love it.

Best: I got 2. 1st is getting certified at GSX Athletics and meeting Jolie G!!! 2nd is actually getting to expose others to the beauty of Crossfit.

Worst: Getting injured a week before I went to my cert. Pulled a groin muscle during a WOD, in front of troops no less.

CF best: finally *finally* getting regular again with CF after too long a break.

CF worst: that too-long break.

I think my best experience righ of hand would have to be the CrossFit games. Getting the chance to watch all those amazing athletes in person was awesome. Also having the chance to compete even with my slow and scaled performance. It was just a great experience and one I hope to have again in 2009.

I hope you all have a Happy New Year!

2. Watching my wife finish residency in June.
3. Seeing black-maned lions in Tanzania in July.
4. Moving to Soquel in August and training with the fantastic people at CrossFit Santa Cruz Central.
5. Scuba diving with manta rays and dolphins in Nov.
6. Seeing friends and family at Christmas time.

Worst:
1. Working way too much the first half of the year.
2. Letting work be an excuse for inconsistent training and watching my gains melt away.
3. Not spending enough time with friends and family.
4. Being a complete pansy in the WODs.

2009 is going to be amazing. Happy New Year everyone!

Worst:

being deployed from Dec of '07 to Feb of '09 (yep, still here) and missing 2 Holiday Seasons in a row (missed 3 out of last 5 Holidays)

Being away from my gorgeous Peruvian girlfriend (Te Amo sweetie)

Letting the deployment take too much of a toll on my ability to stay positive; I tend to pride myself on that, but it gets tough in this environment.

Loosing almost 30 Soldiers and civilians assigned or atrached to our Brigade here in Iraq (RIP brothers aned sisters in arms)

...and the Best for last:

Honestly, Crossfit as a whole - I owe my sanity to it; not to mention the best shape of my life (27 now)

Going on my mid-tour leave and visiting my beautiful girlfriend in her home country of Peru, seeing all of the sites (Mach Pichu, Cusco), and receiving the "wow" comment from her in regards to my "crossfit body" ; )

Getting a regular CF crew for the WODs here on our base

Wost: Eating a tub of popcorn after two months of no grain (and realizing that 'gluten intolerance' is more than just a good reason to avoid bad carbs) . . .

Don't usually post . . . but I gotta.

Best:
Discovering CF in Jan 2008. Agree with all others' sentiments. CF has changed my life. In all ways. Mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually tougher. What an incredible community. And free. Unbelievable. We are all such passionate advocates. I blab about CF any chance I get.

225# deadlift. 155# front squat. 135# overhead squat. 10 dead hang pullups in a row. (couldn't do ONE when I started) Learning how to POSE run and adopting it as natural habit. 135# clean. LEARNING how to clean in general, teaching myself from the site only. I broke my toes doing the Filthy 50 when I dropped the Oly bar on them . . . I'm proud of that and my ripped calluses/blisters/bleeding hands.

Worst:
I still suck at metcon workouts (but my times are better than when I started . . .). I still can't kip. Murph. Eva. DEF. the inverted burpees (oh, God . . .) I broke my toes doing the Filthy 50 when I dropped the Oly bar on them. Realizing I'm addicted.

Mixed:
My jeans don't fit on my thighs and a#$ any more because of the muscle I've packed on.

Merry CF 2009 boys and girls! 3,2,1 . . . ; )

Worst: Taking a 3 month break from crossfit and gaining back all the weight that I lost from doing crossfit. I am such an idiot. Getting horribel headaches when working out that make me fall down in agony. I have not been able to workout the past 4 times. I hope the headaches go away.

Worst moment: Rhabdo in late October, 3 days in the hospital, 2 months later I am still not 100%, but each day gets a bit better.

Comment #111 - Posted by: jonvw at December 30, 2008 5:12 AM

Best and worst in one: Deadlift injury to low back & piriformis.

Worst, because it hurt like hell and threw off my CrossFit training for months.

Best, because it forced me to reexamine my form & mechanics on just about everything. I learned more from that injury than any anatomy book or video could ever teach me.

(what healed it all in the end? deep squats, particularly the ones inflicted upon me at my Level One cert. That cert took my healing from 80% better to 95% better, and in the month since, I'm back to 100% - and better than I was before the injury. So yeah, you could say that CrossFit—and its attention to technique—healed me.)

2008 has been a year of serious ups and downs for my family.

I lost my job in June, company closed after 25 years. started a new job after 6 weeks and hated it so I quit thinking I had 3 other jobs lined up until they went on a hiring freeze. Went 8 more weeks and finally got something else and then my wife lost her job. Wife's grandfather has cancer, close family friend's father passed away etc. Just been one of those years. CF has given me physical and mental strenth and toughness and I know all this will pass and 2009 will be awesome.

Bests: finally drinking the CF cool aid. CF has seriously changed my life. 2 years ago I was just lifting and doing the standard gym crap. Back was all screwed up and I was getting cortizone shots in my shoulder. Now I'm pain free, lean and mean at 170, sets tons of PR's including yesterday destroying my Angie time by 6 mins. Psyched to get my Level 1 cert in January in Golden, CO and hope to start training soon after with hopes to have my own facility in the next year or so.

Major Best was re-enlisting in the military. I'm a former navy diver and just enlisted in the Army National Guard with hopes of becoming an airborne ranger. CF has given me the inner and outer strength to confidently pursue this goal at 37.
My family is awesome and have been so supportive. I don't know where I would be without them.

To Greg and Lauren, I hope you know the impact you have had on so many lives. I haven't met you yet but have nothing but love and appreciation for what you have created. Thank you so much. The CF community is absolutely the best.

I enter the subway at 42nd Street
Nobody speaks in this Tunnel of Heat
Only the conductor, which sounds foreign to me
I stare at my boots and try not to Think

I escape this train at Chambers’ Street
The smells' hit me first
In the Air It Lurks
It Invades my Pores, my Senses and More.
This Smoke is filled with Horror

Hardhat, ID, Past Security.....No Fear
Not many women working Here
It's mostly Cranes, Iron Workers and Engineers
So Lifelike, Dinosaurs almost Appear
Digging, Pulling and Wrenching our Tears

I Breathe the Chemicals; I Walk in the Ashes.
I Hear the Stories; I Feel the Pain.
It's like a Nightmare that won't restrain.

Best (as related to Crossfit) - Completing my first marathon with my wife in 100 degree heat with my legs cramping the last 10 miles and then wanting to do it again. Discovering the high of pushing myself beyond what I believe I am capable of and incorporating that attitude in all aspects of my life. And lastly, which has made the above possible, stumbling across the Crossfit website last December.

Worst - Nothing significant.

Comment #120 - Posted by: JoeCam at December 30, 2008 5:57 AM

2008 was a roller coaster ride for me as well. Injuries, spinal injections, divorce, legal feuds, heart ache were all part of my year. However, I grew spiritually, emotionally and mentally from all of these experiences. Would I want to do them again? Probably not. Am I grateful that they happened? Most certainly...I would not be where I am, WHO I am, without those experiences. And who and where I am right now is alright by me!

Reconnecting with "bada$$i" at BCF and being a part of a two-team that is undeniably the best, announcement of fatherhood (will be DadDyroCk in 6 months...wow....litTleroCk being made as we speak), crossfit training taken to new levels never dreamed of for both my self and the training of clients, learning to love deeper-speak sweeter-and giving forgiveness that I've been denying, have also all been part of 2008.

Trials, tribulations, ups and downs...like any other years. I am grateful I was a part of 2008 and look forward to all that 2009 will have to offer!

Best:
My first and only marriage to a beautiful person; I am amazed at how much I love her.
Buying our first home.
The incredible moment my wife told me that she was pregnant with smiles and tears on her face.
Seeing my child for the first time via ultrasound, watching him (we'll know offically Monday the 5th) flip around like a fish and seeing his little mouth open.
Opening my wife's restaraunt and thinking how much my pop would have loved the place.
Meeting so many people wanting to return to a dynamic life style with CrossFit and then watching them want to repeat the process with their loved ones.
Being priviliged to work with my fellow coaches Mike, Graham, Brandon, Jamie, Matt, and Sandy at CrossFit Troy.

Worst:
Life has been very kind to me this year, and I am truly thankful that there have been no "worst" moments that even register. I could say bumping my head on an open cuboard door, but heck, that's not even been around this year.
I think my truck is getting up there, so there's potential that she might need some attention, but crap, no problems there either. And even so, she's been so good over the years, if something happens, well, I can't complain.
My dog has been bad only a few times.
Oh wait, I did lock myself out of the house at 10 at night without a coat and it was only 20 outside and my wife was still at work and I had to call the cops after disturbing my neighbors and we had a laugh as I had to 'break' into my house through a window.
Nope; nothing but turn to laughable moments actually. : )

Best: Finally getting a long-needed divorce and managing to keep the moral high ground through the mess.

Worst: Going through a divorce.

I must say by maintaining all of the important aspects of your life and weeding out those that are not as important or productive pays huge gains when your life gets put in a hopper. For me those things are my daughter, work, school, and Crossfit. Each reinforces the other, but the physical and mental conditioning of Crossfit greatly enhances ones ability to perform in their life. Crossfit is my training regimen that allows me to see clearly when the blizzards happen and allows me to have reserves of positive energy that can be directed at the above stated priorities. Thank you Crossfit.

Best:
- Getting on the Fire Department after 5 years of trying
- Finding Crossfit
- Finding the balance in life with my diet, friends and family
- Putting on 15lbs of lean mass

Worst:
- Injuring my back earlier this month.
- Some minor aches that wont go away.

Hurting my back was a blessing in disguise however. It made me realize that foam rolling, stretching and active rest are a crucial part in staying injury free. Its something Ill have to stay commited to the rest of my life to continue the sports and activities that I enjoy.

Bring on 2009!

Best experiences:
1) Joining Freedom CrossFit and working with Joey. I have learned a ton compared to when I was doing the WODS in my garage. Thanks Joey.
2) Visiting with Coach Glassman at Freedom CF.
3) Attending the Level 1 cert. at Mesa Fire. Coach and the crew of trainers were top notch.
4) Attending Robb Wolf's nutrition cert. at CF Flagstaff. When it comes to nutrition, Robb's the f'ing man!
5) Continued PR's in the WOD's and a gain of 5 lbs. of lean muscle mass. Never in a million years would I have thought I could achieve this level of fitness at 36.

Worst:
-Loss of my father-in-law to cancer. I have seen some horrible sh!t in my career but nothing could have ever prepared me for seeing him die such a painful death.

Best: Discovering CrossFit in a Muscle and Fitness magazine and starting Crossfit in May at a time when I thought that doing cable chest flyes and calf raises was on the path to fitness.

Worst: Only doing the metcon workouts for about the first three months I did CrossFit.

Best: Being able to coach CrossFit and earn a living doing what I love

I'm an eternal optimist, think you gotta be in CrossFit, so can't really pin down a worst, however I was fotunate not to lose any people dear to me but my thoughts and prayers go out to those who did this past year.

Thanks Coach and Lauren!

Comment #141 - Posted by: dan colson at December 30, 2008 7:56 AM

oh, what a year it was...

Best: The competitions. Each was a riot. CF Wilmington was the funnest, and that gym has the best tribe on Earth. Aromas was the most intense workouts I've ever had, and I finally found my breaking point during the 100 lb clean & jerks. That was the most intense physical experience I've ever had, and gotta recommend being extremely evil to yourself every so once in awhile. Nothing quite says your alive nearly as much as somehow surviving something ghastly. Albany and East Coast were equally amusing. I also had amazing good times with Jolie, and am proud to have her as my sister.

Worst: the injury I got just before the Wilmington competition, that's messed me up to this very day. I've really hated what it did to me. It drained out my strength and speed to where I went from a 250 Deadlift to a 195 DL at its worst. It's added daily pain to each and every thing I do.

Bilateral plantar fasciatis is invidious. At first you think you can train around it, then it rearranges every single thing about your skeleton until your muscles are all bound up in really painful knots and even your jaws hurt. Headaches. Painful to sleep. To walk. The whole thing, starting from the feet and crept its way up. It was a complete kryptonite meltdown, and I hated to live it. I drained out thousands and thousands of dollars on trying to treat it. Temporary results at best.

That being said, I'm still madly in love with Crossfit, and know that I'm way too smart and mean to let plantar fasciatis defeat me. I'll be back to being a super hero in 2009, even if I have to cut my calves off.

Worst: The death of my brother 4 days after finding out I didn't get an O billet to BUD/S. What a week that was...

Best: Not letting hardship destroy who I am or distract me from my goals. Also, realizing how much stronger I have become because of these setbacks. CrossFit kept me in the game during the most difficult days of my life - mentally and physically, and I am forever grateful.

I graduated this December and will commission 16 Jan. 2009 marks the beginning of what I hope to be a very exciting career.

I've been doing CrossFit since 2006 and went to an affiliate for the first time about a week ago. I felt like a kid in a candy store. Man I've been missing out...

RIP Danny. I'll get a lat-trans to bud/s no doubt. If I gave up now I never deserved it in the first place...

Worst:

Finding out that my Mom has brain cancer. She's a tough woman though and has been a huge inspiration to all of us.

Best moments:

Standing on top of Half Dome, staring in awe at God's creation and being totally thankful for my Wife, my two Sons and my life.

Going to the 2008 Crossfit Games on a whim (I had just discovered Crossfit at that time) and then driving to the beach afterward and drinking a beer...by myself, just looking at the sea. That was a great day.

Best exercise-wise - Starting crossfit

Best life-wise - Snaring the girlfriend

Worst exercise-wise - The illness that is currently preventing me from training. I'm getting better slowly.

Worst life-wise - I let my poker habit get the better of me at one point and that was a very low point. Past it now and it's being monitored tighter than ever.

Bring on 2009!

worst experience of the year was going through another bout of depression that lasted several months and damaged my personal and business life significantly. best experience was coming across the crossfit site. I was in a bad spot and my running just wasn't cutting it. Crossfit didn't just get me on the road to fitness, it reminded me of the commitment and dedication it takes to succeed in life.

Bests -

-Learning a very important lesson... Not only learning it, but appreciating it, too. Every move I make doesn't work out the way I plan. The key is to keep moving. Keep trying until I get it right. .. and learning from my mistakes along the way. I've learned a lot this year. I plan on f'ing up more in 2009 but I won't repeat my 2008 mistakes.

- Waking up every day knowing that I have the greatest Mother and Little Brother Ethan Boo that I could ever dream of. They're my world and none of my other bests would be as sweet without them.

- Every single CrossFit adventure I've been on this year. The traveling, the people I've met and had the pleasure of spending time with. It's been a wild, crazy, adventurous, dramatic year.. Too many things to even mention since I was up to something new every month. I mean, really, lots and lots of stuff went down... gyms and people and men and traveling and certs.. oh my.

- Videos on the site made for lots of drama and controversy in my world.

- The month I spent in Arizona was not only one of the best of this year, but by far one of the best of my life. An infinite thank you to the people I spent time with there. I'll never forget it.

- Getting my Mom to start CrossFitting was one of my proudest accomplishments.. Shes still a work in progress but she's into it and trying. I'm proud of her.

I don't have any worsts worth mentioning. The bad parts are important because they put the good stuff in perspective, but aside from that I don't dwell on it. I don't like to focus on the lousy days. I like to keep my eyes focused straight ahead towards all the new bests and worsts that I can't wait to experience.

I'm excited to see what I get myself into this year. I'm sure I'll figure out how to keep myself entertained ;D

Best --> so many to list...seriously. Company revenue/profit is up, my health is terrific, family is doing great. No reason to bitch about anything.

Worst --> it's the same thing every year: the passing of my father in 1992. It's always the worst thing every year and I miss him terribly, but he was a terrific man and I'm glad he was my dad.

As if it's not done enough times, I would like to thank Greg Glassman for his efforts at making us a fitter nation. If there was a Nobel Peace Prize for fitness, indeed he would win it, and deservedly so.

Was inspired by the Hero WOD from yesterdays video so today decided not rest and pay tribute to those men and do it solo. Took a little over an hour to complete the whole thing by myself all reps/weights but it was worth it. I strongly reccomend it to anyone who wants to pay tribute. The workout offered time to reflect not only on the men for which it was made but also for fellow fallen comrades I've known and lost while on duty. "Rangers Lead The Way"

Comment #157 - Posted by: Michael at December 30, 2008 9:26 AM

Best: being with my wife every single day, achieving a few career milestones, going to the mountains almost every week. My stepson getting back on his feet. In a way, getting older - being wiser and less anxious about life, realizing I can deliver when people look to me for help with matters great and small. And yes, "discovering" crossfit last april and learning there is a whole new world out there, inluding some new friends.

Worst: death of a beloved family cat, Liberty. I know it sounds trivial, but she was really cool and it is funny how attached you get to the little critters. RIP.

Best life experience was snorkeling in the Galapagos islands with my brother.

Best fitness experience was learning to do pullups and getting excited about exercise.

This will mark a year and a half for me in Crossfit. Worst experience-- Any Fran workout as my time is still over seven minutes.

Best experience-- Unfortunately it was during a Hero Workout. I could not get to the gym for Ryan Hummert's workout so I just did the best G.I. Jane for Ryan I ever performed: Under 14 minutes! 13:54.

Overall, being in perhaps the best shape of my life at 42 and able to outperform most athletes in their 20's is worth all the calluses and aching muscles. I still have not disciplined myself to attain the dietary requirements of Crossfit (I still love pizza and soda) but it is a New Year resolution.

What a fun last Rest Day for 2008.

Worst? It's been a tough couple of years financially for the bingo clan and our business. Each time I have to say to my kids "I'm sorry, we can't afford that" a little part of me dies. It hit home hardest when our big dog had a spinal cord injury and lost the use of her hindquarters and control of her bladder; there was a limit to the care we could afford.

Best? Truthfully it's impossible to choose! Having to say "I'm sorry, we can't afford that" has made me a better parent. A little deprivation makes for a more ambitious young adult, too. And our big dog rallied, survived the injury, and continues to shower us with love on a daily basis.

Best of CF? Again, tough to choose. How about rooming with Apolloswabbie and Dale Saran without ever having met either one prior to the Games? Thanks again, gents. This was my year to meet the Crossfit nation I had only known in cyberspace, and the Crossfit Games were a revelation. I pretty much met EVERYONE, so I won't name names for fear I'll forget someone. What a gift you all gave me, that look on your face when I introduced myself to each of you ("people around here know me as Bingo")--many thanks to one and all.

I finally got my long-awaited handshake (and hugs!) from Coach and Lauren! Thank you, my friends, for everything.

But most of all the best of 2008 is the same as the best of so many years before, the fact that I am part of the Bingo family.

And that every day when I wake up I am STILL the father of a daughter.

Comment #181 - Posted by: bingo at December 30, 2008 11:17 AM

1. Attending the Special Olympics Canada National Winter Games in Quebec City as Team Manager for Team Saskatchewan. These athletes have the greatest determination to succeed and it is amazing to watch. They are also so grateful for everything you do for them.
2. Learning that 5 of our athletes were chosen to represent Team Canada at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Boise, Idaho February 7-14, 2009. If you have a chance to catch them in action, it is truly amazing to watch.
3. Starting Crossfit in October has proved to be very beneficial. I have made physical and mental gains. This is the first workout program that i have stuck with. I'm actually upset when i have to miss a day.

Worst

1. It has taken me over a year to find the time to finish renovating my kitchen and it still won't be done before the new year. I have not been eating very healthy and have been eating out a lot. It will be nice to have a functional kitchen by the end of January...I hope!

Allison,

That's funny. I tell my kids one secret of life is persistently inventing new mistakes. Sticking to the tried and true ones is just boring.

Best and worst were, like many of the posts, related. I made good money, but I exhausted myself doing it. I had a dream last night that I was on the road late at night, too tired to drive, and checked into a hotel. Then I realized that I had never even left town. When I tried to tell them where I was trying to go, I couldn't remember, as it could have been any of a dozen cities. I truly spent most of the year like that.

It was worth it, though.

I spent most of the year alone, too: working alone, driving alone, eating alone, sleeping alone. It occurred to me, standing on a ladder somewhere or other, that solitude is very much a form of dialling down external noise in your environment. It is a form of fasting, that allows the normal fog of confusion to reduce in density so that you can on occasion actually think and feel with clarity. That is so hard, and so rare, at least for me.

I've decided to get my first tattoo in the coming year, and if I can remain true to it, next year will be my best year ever, no matter what happens.

Comment #188 - Posted by: Barry Cooper at December 30, 2008 12:01 PM

I'm an avid Crossfitter who never posts comments until today. Why now???...because the picture attached to todays posting is in fact the very location I started Crossfit (a once lonely little FOB in Afghanistan...I was there before the fence was up...I hear it is a busy place now). Not only did I fall in love with Crossfit here I was one of the Crossfitt trailblazers at this FOB.

If anyone reads this who is currently or has been on this FOB please confirm or deny that the home-made rings are still around. They are made of 3 wraps of 4 AWG wire wrapped in duct tape. This is awesome!!!

I can't even think about my best and worst of the year...I am too excited about the picture.

Worst: I can't really complain about anything.

2008 was the best year of my life.

CrossFit made me a member of the traveling Certification Team, letting me work side-by-side with some of the most passionate people I've ever met: Andy Thompson, Pat Sherwood, Chuck Carswell, Tony Budding, E.C., Kurtis Bowler, Robb Wolf, Todd Widman, Boz, Pat Barber, Lisa Ray.

Along with the athletes we train, you guys are the reason I get up in the morning.

We've been allowed to film some of the best up-and-coming athletes in the business, screened our videos right here, and been welcomed with hugs every place we've gone. The power and confidence that brings to the human psyche is amazing. I appreciate the love more than I can ever communicate, and will always strive to earn your trust.

Again Faster has blossomed as a business and a destination. It is more than I ever imagined. Thanks to everyone who visits, whether for business or pleasure.

Thanks Samantha, Patrick, Neal, and Brendan for all of your hard work and endless support. 2009 will be even better.

I promise.

Worst. My cat Moose passed away. Sounds stupid, but he was my best friend for 12 years and I'll always love him.

Best. Stopped being a selfish chickenshit and moved in with my girlfriend finally. Best thing I ever did. And Crossfit... CF has changed my life. My MMA training did a 180 and it's 100 percent due to the fact that I gave up BB and drank the kool-aid. Looking forward to my first pro fight in 2009... Thank you Coach, you are an amazing human being.

God Bless, everybody. Best and brightest New year to you all!!!

worst: Having to apply mental strength, fortitude, and stamina (all improved by CF) to a sometimes uncertain life.

Best - Another year without leaving my family for more than a month. Promotion. The Mugu surf. Rhino qual. A very interesting job.

Worst - The realization that the optempo will still be horrible when I go back to the fleet. Having friend after friend go back to the fleet to get 13 month DIFDEN IAs. Compound injuries keeping me from working out at all for 2 months. Stock Market. Worrying about the future.

Really enjoying reading everyones posts.

Us CFers have INCREDIBLE inner strength.

had to make up 'Angie' today

100 pull ups- First time doing about 1/2 with chest to the bar kipping. These were really hard and slowed me down tremendously. They also pretty much ruined my rhythm with regular kipping for some reason. Could not get more then 5 at a time.

I'd like to get really good at these and make these my new kipping pull up.

100 push ups- legs touching ground
100 sit ups- unanchored and fingertips on temples
100 squats- well below parallel

I loved reading through these...

Greg and Lauren and their incredibly dedicated team have impacted so many people, it truly is an honor to be a part of this family.

I'm 48, Ive been an athlete my entire life and nothing has held my attention, challenged my confidence or morphed my conditioning like CrossFit has.

Even before discovering CF, I couldn't imagine not training. As a youngster, I would roll out of bed and do push ups before I brushed my teeth - understanding the benefits of fitness, my greatest source of frustration was that my family didn't workout and my commitment to training interfered with the scarce family time I had...

Enter CF :-)

My wife, who's idea of working out was buying fitness magazines and hoping 'osmosis' would kick in...now she is an avid CrossFit-er, as is my 17 year old son Nick. My 6 & 11 year girls will train with us anytime we hit the garage gym.

My 6 year old asked me for an extra egg the other day..in fact her exact words were: "Dad, Im doing a 2-block today." :-)

CF, Zone, a community of coaches...

Greg, whatever it was that sparked the original idea to combine the movements, inject the intensity, throw up on yourself, and do it again...whatever it was in that moment that went from intuition to mission...thank you.

I'm honored to be your student & friend,

Tony

Family -
Worst: the plane ride from Melbourne to Paris with my wife when we heard our 12-yo daughter had been hospitalised and tested for brain tumour and encephalitis during her 3-week school trip to France in October.
Best: arriving to see that she was going to be OK and watching her make a full recovery over the next 8 weeks.

Crossfit -
Worst: contracting whooping cough at the age of 40!! 3 months of night sweats, coughing, fatigue, etc... and no WOD's.
Best: a PB of 19-and-a-bit rounds of Cindy recently, even though I'm at the early part of the walk up the comeback trail.

Thanks to all involved in the CF community. You inspire me, educate me and challenge me.

Happy New Year!

Almost daily, I thank God for a roof, HVAC (like many of you, I've lived without it), enough food, health, and useful work to do.

But you really can't imagine how good you have it, unless you live through something radically different. I don't know how you soldiers hack it. All I can say is you have my respect, and that you're tougher men and women than me. I do the best I can, but I don't think I've ever truly come close to my limits.

Having said that, I can't resist posting the following, an account from the Israeli settlement of Sderot. This is a life I'm quite sure they would all be quite happy to be free from.

http://www.commentarymagazine.com/viewarticle.cfm/sderot-under-siege-14043

It is interesting, but depressingly unsurprising, that after 6,000 rockets in 2 years--all of them intended to kill civilians, and as many as possible--the Israeli response is being painted as aggression. I understand why 2 bit dictators--most of the Arab world--would want to channel aggression away from themselves and towards the "usual suspects".

What I don't understand is the craven and morally obtuse Western media collusion in this. It does nothing to help anyone. In fact, it prolongs the conflict.

Best - First workout in a CrossFit box... have been doing them in a globo gym, and dealing with the funny looks the rest of the time! The camraderie in a box is awesome, and something I look forward too all the time!

Worst - Mr. Joshua for the first time, and being unable to finish the 4th and 5th sets up dead lifts... ugh, that was brutal pain, and the running didn't make it any better! LOL

Best ? Tree-house building, a 1.4 mile open sea swim for charity, a Tuscan wedding with old friends, and playing rugby for the first time in 7 years.

Worst ? Deaths. An old family friend, and the daughter of a friend.

Lessons learned ? Get out and simply enjoy what life has to offer, for it is sometimes snatched away early. Oh, and Grace is a real buzz !

Best: Finally committing to Crossfit 110% just a week or 2 ago. I always kind of lurked around and browsed, but I made things official on Dec. 16th and have been all the better for it (even if it has been short lived thus far). Going to experiment with Zone dieting as well very soon (thanks mom for the book!). So that's something to look forward to.

Worst: ....I really can't think of much. I consider myself a pretty positive person and try to look at the good in even the bad situations. Nothing comes immediately to mind, so I can be thankful for that :)

All of my "bests" far out-weigh any of the "worsts", and I choose to learn from the "worsts", so as not to repeat them. One of my bests that I am most thankful for are my CrossFit friends who I've come to love and depend on to push me through and cheer me on with every WOD. CrossFit is no fun by yourself, and I'm REALLY, REALLY lucky to have the friends I've made this year. I realize each day how much I learn from each of them, and how blessed I am to call them my FRIENDS and not just my workout crew. Thank you to each of you!

2008 was a crappy year for me, but I feel foolish even thinking that now after reading some of the stories. I didnt face cancer or death this year, and God willing will not for many years to come, but it still was a hard hard year.Early on this year, when I met CrossFit I learned I never have been fit in my life even though I am a 3 time Olympian. That hurt. Then I gave up for a while on trying to finally be the fit person I always thought I was. But I am back at it now and committed (going to cert in May YAY!!) The realization that even though I was ranked first in the world in '92, won a silver medal in the 93 World Champs and won a few national titles I have always been unfit. Scary. I just look back with regret...what could I have done if I was fit? Its a long road to true fitness starting at 37 with 4 kids under age 7. I feel ridiculous writing this, but I feel like the kid who was really successful in high school who becomes the total loser later...its been a long long year of harsh realities that Crossfit gave me, and CrossFit will pull me up into a new reality.
all that skiing gave me something though - the ability to DL 225 and squat 150 totally untrained.
Thanks Eva for leading by example:)

By far my best for the year was maintaining my commitment to Crossfit & losing over 40#'s!

Worst - Keeping Debbie away from the hospital a little too long, and insisting she walk the 1/2 mile there. Her pain was so bad she couldn't make it half a block without doubling over. Very bad call in hindsight. Should have called an audible.

Best - With the admitting doctor, seeing the top of Nathaniel's head sticking out rather than the cervix and, of course, his arrival two hours later. Nothing can beat it.

I have fallen off the CrossFit wagon the last couple of months due to bowhunting as usual (Appolloswabbie, it is good to see that someone else shares the bowhunting addiction). I thought this would be a good time to chime in. Been doing CrossFit since 2006 and like everyone here eventually realizes, Crossfit will get you in the best shape of your life if you have the drive and commitment. I lifted in my 20s and ran several marathons in my 30s but still feel and look better than in my younger days. An example, we recently visited Six Flags in Arlington,TX and I noticed a line of people at the Marines booth. I thought that people were signing up but then realized that it was actually a deadhang pullup contest. After watching several people try to reach the top level of 20 deadhang pullups, my daughter said Dad you do CrossFit you need to enter. Long story short, I did 21 dead hang pullups and reached the top level. When I dropped off the bar, the 20something marine stared at me with a puzzled look on his face, then he finally asked "What type of training do you do?" I took my free water bottle and T-shirt and said CrossFit.com with a smile on my face. He then said that the majority of 20 year old guys that he comes across can't do six deadhang pullups. I told him again to look up CrossFit because it kicks a$$. The entire time that we spent watching the other competitors only one other person reached 20 pullups. I walked away thinking that most CrossFitters could probably do 20 pullups. That's the reason that I am here but then again that's the reason that all of us are here.

Thanks Coach

Worst: Having to give up my xfit routine and golf temporarily because my wife broke her ankle and is wheel chair bound which means she needs total care 24/7 in addition to my daytime job. I did not deserve rest today so I did the Michael
WOD I missed. 27:30. Treadmill @ 1% incline, anchored sit ups, back xtensions as rx'd. Gotta step it up on the running, but only my 3rd week of crossfitting. All this started because I saw one of the young trainers at my gym doing some type of goofy monkey pullups! I asked him what was up with that and he shared his newfound excitement about crossfit to me. Thanks Eric!

i don't understand how crossfit makes anyone's life better. but if it does, more power to you.

#241- i had a similar experience early in the year. a couple friends and i came across a marine corps recruiting stand with a pull up bar. 20 pull ups would get you a t shirt. i did 20 and they told me that 24 was the best for the day. i did five more, hung there and asked if i now had the record. they said yup, so i hopped off and ran away with my free t.

dilemma:
i can't do as many deadhang pull ups as i could 10-15 years ago. pr is 38. today it's 35. however, 50+ pull ups with hip drive isn't a problem. i thought the kip would help a bit more in boosting my real pull ups. i guess i'm still going to do them b/c i like hitting 50 pull ups per set.

Thank you all for your comments. It always amazes me when I learn how and why other people CrossFit. It's really incredible that there is something in all of us that needs this, that craves it. And the space it fills in each of us is different, the same, and a deep and wonderfully complicated but simple space.

Worst: not being near friends and family when I was needed or wanted to be there. Failing the written test for the fire department and feeling completely lost.

Best: buying a house, getting better at balancing my life and my diet (and blood sugar), recovering my motivation to take the next fire exam, spending three weeks with my sister's family.

Josh,

Thanks!!!

On a related note, I would like to take the occasion of New Year's Day to simply encourage all of you to ask the question: what is Goodness, for you?

Politically, is our goal not universal peace and wealth, with every nation governed by people who can be removed by popular vote if they abuse the trust they have been given? Is it anything other than good to desire to check--violently if necessary--those who envision a world governed only by their own parochial understandings, and who are prepared to commit any and all acts of violence to get it and keep it?

What is gained by caving in to those who are intolerant? Is the cause of tolerance served? It should be self evident that it is not, and only moral idiocy and cowardice keep this plain fact from being proclaimed daily by our intellectual elite from the highest rooftops.

Since Josh mentioned Post 50, I will mention my own post 216. If anyone wants to know why the Israelis are fighting, it is because they have been undergoing the closest equivalent to the V2 blitz on London that the Gazans have been able to create. Their casualties are low simply because they live like feral animals underground.

Launching rockets with the intent to commit mass murder is an act of war. There is no ambiguity here, and no gray area.

Worst:
totalling my car last Sunday
If my kids are healthy and happy there are no bad experiences that count.

Best:
Being able to walk out of the crash and laugh. You can always buy another car.
Being able to call my daughters on 12:01 am New Years and get an answer that they are happy, healthy and having fun.
My mom having fun on New years eve after having a kidney removed due to cancer and being in remission and loving life.
