This has nothing to do with the WOD, but I would love to know why the new shirts display the word "infidel" on them. Does Crossfit stand behind a non-belief system when it comes to religion? Or am I completely off the mark? Forgive me if I am. Hope everyone has a great Christmas!

You are correct. Crossfit promotes the intolerance for any organized religion, with the exception of wiccan, taoism, and some minor pagan belief systems of sub-saharan Africa.

Or you could read all the comments for that day.

I just did my first CF work out today and it was a modified Cindy. (Only one-arm, I had to do a wall press. I also only had to go for 12 minutes and only made it through 6 rounds. Weak, I know...

Loved the Cindy though. :)

What "#17 head" is saying is simply...no Crossfit does not have any kind of religious preference. I myself interpret as "infidel" of the conventional gym scene. It also apparently has some roots in supporting our troops. However, I shall not delve into that because i am not well versed enough on that subject to be spouting information on that. The info is there in the comments from that day as said if you're curious enough.

Annnnd on that note....I've never done either of these, but i'm thinking Mary just because kicking my ass is just that much fun. That and...I don't think anyone in my gym has ever seen someone go for handstand push ups. I'm all for shock value.

Jeff Tucker and Gillian give me your strength!!!

"Cindy":

Scaling up with a 40# vest, ring push-ups with chest to bottom of the rings, and 1/2 BW (100#) squats. Gunning for 10 rounds.

Afterward I need to make-up today's 800x4. I was too wiped by the challenge WOD at Austin's gym, Unlimited in Milpitas.

Austin wrote up a partner-up WOD:

2 athletes share a barbell, and complete the following in order (for time):

55 Power Snatches @ 75#, athlete 1
55 Power Snatches @ 75#, athlete 2
Switch the weight to 95#
40 Floor-to-overhead anyhow @ 95#, athlete 1
40 Floor-to-overhead anyhow @ 95#, athlete 2
Switch the weight to 135#
30 Deadlifts @ 135#, athlete 1
30 Deadlifts @ 135#, athlete 2

I paired up with Dave from Santa Clara. He was athlete 1 and I was athlete 2. Everything was going well and we were in a close 2nd until Dave tweaked his back trying to change out the weight from 75# to 95# during the switch. Austin stepped in and continued with the 40 floor-to-overhead. He went so fast that I didn't have a chance to rest! Needless to say, the 40 reps at 95# was brutality.

I think we finished with a time of 14 minutes and some change. What a butt-kicker! I am totally wiped. We stayed around eating their holiday party leftovers and talking about the Games, the Affiliate Cup format, and the Bad Girl Open. What a fun Saturday morning!

I do not think it's a cut against religion or traditional gyms/working out. That seems to limp dick for me.

Who uses the word infidel as a degratory term? Al Quedia? I think by placing the word on a shirt, it in a sense embraces the word. Stealing it's power. Sort of like saying "if being faithful means to be like Osama, Then I am proud to be an infidel"

You are correct Osama. we do not believe as you believe. We do not think as you think....And we never will. so piss off.

I never even gave a second thought when I first saw that shirt. But now that I think about it and what blanant defiance and go F@@@ yourself that says to those who have/wish to do the U.S. harm. That Shit just sold me on a shirt.

Sunday musings...

1) Home. The big kids are home from college. The house is crowded and warm; it's hard to believe we had enough room to have them here full time. It's more than nice, and I miss them.

2) Carb loading. A full day of baking Chez bingo. Dozens and dozens of Christmas cookies now cover every surface in the kitchen. 50 weeks of strict Zone so I can indulge for 2. Yum.

3) Another mirror story. One of the bingo progeny, it doesn't matter which one, is kinda sad right now about a romantic relationship that didn't pan out. Looking in the mirror to discover why my child didn't really like the person who was looking back. Not terribly fit. Owner of some bad life decisions and some unhealthy choices. Looking for more success and not finding quite enough. And sad about all of that.

Mrs. bingo, the smart one in this couple, saw the opportunity. In order to find that one special person, that soul mate, the one who will like every little bit about you, you first have to like yourself. It's necessary to do whatever it takes to be happy to see the person who looks back from the mirror. She seized the teachable moment when it arose in the middle of the night.

Almost all of those unhealthy choices, those bad decisions, can be overcome. There's a fresh start out there every morning. A day filled with new first impressions to make. It's kinda like each WOD we get--each one is another opportunity to make ourselves better. We get to choose every day.

It's kind of trite I guess, but in order to be liked, to be loved, it really is necessary to like yourself. 'Cause if YOU don't, why should anyone else?

I'll see you next week...

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know why Cindy and Mary get posted together? I always feel like I'm missing out having to choose only one. I never know if I should try and get them both in with separate workouts, to alternate each time, or to keep doing the same one to chart progress. Hi,
In Mary, are the one legged squats
"10 One legged squats, alternating"
10 with left on 1st round, 10 with right on 2nd round...
OR
1 with left + 1 with right + 1 with left + ... for a total of 10 (5 with both legs) every round?
I'm sure the answer is somewhere on the site but I would appreciate a quick reply from someone who knows. Thank you.

#32 ELo

A normal day of fueling for me consists of:

Breakfast: 5 eggs--an ounce of cheese, 2-2 1/2 cups grapes, 60-75 almonds

Lunch: 5 oz cooked chicken (weighed), 2-2 1/2 cups grapes, 60-75 almonds

snack: 5 oz cooked ckicken or 5 eggs (with an ounce of cheese), 2 cups grapes, 60 almonds

dinner: 5 oz cooked chicken, 2-2 1/2 cups grapes, 60-75 almonds

snack: 3 oz cooked chicken or 3 eggs (with an ounce of cheese), 1 1/2- 2 cups grapes, 45-60 almonds

No joke, it is as basic as it gets. Like I said, cooking is a passion next to CF and a few other things...ahem...so my food tastes good and is not bland. Each time I cook up a "batch" of eggs or 10 lbs of chicken, I make it taste different each time, so that eating doesn't get anymore "boring" than it is. However, the goal here is for fuel, to increase performance and to show myself, and others, quantifiable proof that zoning and following the main site WOD does infact blow it up!
I have coffee in the am, and it has cream and a splint of sugar. I will snag a cookie out of the jar a couple times a week, but my cheats don't go far beyond that. It is basic, rigid-as Fit Mom in CT put it-but it works like i never thought possible! And it keeps on getting better and better and better! I have just begun, and there is a long road ahead....thank God! What fun would it be to hit peak or max in a month, ya know!? Let it take...forever! I will be at this through this life and the next, I enjoy the work and the struggles! Overcoming obstacles IS what IT is about!!

For the record, most folks choose to do Cindy when this choice comes up....because it's easier. Don't be a wimp --> give Mary some face time and push through the pistols.

Did pushups off the knees until round three, then the rest off the wall.

Pullups are hard, because my chair is a little too high to get me to work them, but I'm definitely not in condition to do the --uh oh, newbie alert--"kippings"--yes I'll go look it up. Anyway, from my folding chair, I bent my knees, dropping down to hang a little and do the pullups from there.

The CF.com WOD from yesterday (since my legs were cramping all afternoon from the partner WOD at Unlimited):

SATURDAY 081220

Four rounds, each for time of:
800 meter run

Rest as needed between efforts.

Post times for each round to comments.

3:11 (again tried to keep POSE technique, but reverted back to sloppy survival mode running and gutted through it on the 2nd lap.)

OMG my calves! Goal for next time is sub-2:50. Seems like 8 minute rest intervals worked well for max recovery without getting cold.

12 rounds + 3 Pull ups at 6000' elevation and the perpetual smoking fire pit stealing the thin air outside the gym here at Eggers.

Stateside PR for Cindy around sea level is 17 rounds + pull ups and some push ups.

I made a severe tactical error of taking on Cindy within 1 hour of consuming KBR dinner washed down with a Diet Pepsi. Oh the pain of it all. So close to Pukie, but it was this or an excuse to not do it at all and I didn't want to be the little kitty.

Today is my second day on this program all together. I am fat and out of shape and I'm pretty sure that cindy isn't going to go home with me. That slut really beat me up today.

Had to sub real pull ups with lat pull downs on a machine

1st and 2nd sets at 200, then 3rd and 4th at 180, 5th and 6th and 7th at 160.

Push-ups really made me feel like a ho. 1st-3rd round did all the push ups... the 4th thru 7th I was cindys hag... couldnt'get more than 3 or 4 reps.

Now the squats... all 7 rounds no problem...

Finally, cindy just laughed me out the door as I was finished after 7 sets in 17 minutes.

I feel very good though because today is the first day of the rest of my life.

Guess what, today is a gift... otherwise it wouldn't be called the present!!!

Comment #109 - Posted by: Casey at December 21, 2008 8:19 AM

Cindy may have to wait until I find a suitable pull up location, the bar I have at my house was designed in the flawed dead-hang state of mind.

In the mean time I am going to have a go at some DIY gymnastic rings made with PVC heated in an oven. I have a pretty good idea of how this should go, but does anyone have any pointers?

Crossfit staff,

Just a note to thank you for putting this all together as a concept. As an AF guy with 14 years of service, I have dabbled with different components of functional exercise over the years. My only regret is not finding you guys sooner. Life has been a blur since 2001: work, life and annual med boards stemming from a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) 6 years ago.

But honestly, the big news is that I feel better today than even before getting PD. I've been doing foundational crossfit exercises for a month and am fully sold on the results. I first learned about you guys from a TACP friend of mine. I curse his name during the routines but always thank him afterword. I just wanted to take a minute to thank you guys. I hope to speak with you soon at a level 1 certification seminar. Take care for now.

First crossfit work out. I did Cindy and completed 12 rounds. I am a cross country runner, since the season ended I have been spending about an hour and a half between my cardio and lifting. I leave there feeling great and I am sore the next day. I was told about crossfit on thanksgiving by my cousins. I have been reading the site a lot and decided to get into it today. I plan on doing the WOD daily. I hope to build muscle mass and improve my running.

I think i have become a crossfit addict. looking forward to another great one tomorrow.

Fit Mom,

I couldn't disagree with you more... pull ups are the bane of my existence. I would blow cross fit up if I didn't have to do stinkin' pull ups! LOL Of course, I don't have the gymnast background, and I'm thinking the football background that I do have might explain why I do so well with the lifting segments, and not so much on the gymnastics segments. With all of that said, what do burpees fall under, because they're right behind pull ups for sucking! LOL Cross fit sure keeps me from being proud - I promise you that!

It will be Cindy for me (fewer pull ups) in about 3 hours!

Dude--I had been stuck at 19 rounds for over a year--it turned into a joke no matter how great or shitty I felt--19 rounds. This is what got me to 20 last month-- I sat down on my fourth point of contact for one minute at the halfway point. Don't ask me how sitting on my ass for a minute got me another round.

On the infidel shirt thing--I always took it to mean that I was infidel in the eyes of jihadists--funny story the last time I was in Iraq in 2006 it was actually put out in Baghdad that the wearing of infidel t-shirts was not allowed in FOB gyms--because clearly we would have been offending each other--whatever. Merry Christmas all.

Anyone that wears an infidel shirt is normally either a support guy, swcc student or something else who actually does clothing shopping at general jacksons. It should be banned for lameness not offending each other

Tied my pre-knee surgery pr. Legs were my limiting factor.

Kelly Moore, not that I have room to give you any advice but, with all the problems I've been having with my shoulders, I started doing pushups with my arms tight to my ribs. After months of doing them that way and warming up my rotator cuffs before every workout, I've found that I can now move my arms out away from my body again while doing pushups. However, they collapse on me when doing HSPU.

All pull ups were dead hang because I couldn't kip on this bar. It was really a blessing in disguise because I found that I could do all those pull ups in unbroken sets. To everyone who is skeptical about the efficacy of kipping pull ups, they work. Power through them, get as many kipping as you can and then test yourself on dead hangs after a few months. The results are amazing.

The first crossfit workout I ever did was Cindy. That was back in January of this year. Got 12 2/3.
Just finished today with 18 1/2.

My 15 year old son got 20 1/2 and I was proud to be beaten by him.

Started off with 25 secs rest in between rounds and after about 6 rounds, figured out that I could get 22 w/ about 27 secs rest in between. Held that pace right thru the end. Definitely need a rest day tomorrow. But very happy w/ a string of PR's over the last couple months.

I have question/comment regarding yesterday's discussion about what constitutes "elite running and deadlifting".
The reference, cited on this website, provides standards for elite crossfitters: 800m in 2:20 and DL 2 1/2 BW.
However, the barbell standard for an elite level DL for a 181 lb lifter is 548 lb (approx 3 times BW); and of course (as was pointed out yesterday) 2:20 is not even elite running for a high school athlete.
So, as Coach says, we are training to try to achieve novice levels for 800m runners AND gymnasts AND Olylifters, all in the same athlete.

Sorry for the long post! But I really would be interested in comments. Are there many Crossfitters out there with a 2:20 800m and a 2and1/2plus BW DL?
I am 53/M/162lb and have a 2:55 800m and a 345 DL

I disagree that "Infidel" on the shirts should have any meaning beyond that of symbolizing Crossfit as the antithesis to much of the accepted fitness dogma existing today.

However, for those that want it to carry message to Muslim radicals, you should convey that message in Arabic. كافر read from right to left and pronounced "Kaafir" is "Infidel" in Arabic.

Been doing crossfit for two, three day periods now. Having to alter workouts a little to get through them but Im sold. Did "Cindy" today and got 14 rounds in. I can't kipe and I couldnt do regular pull-ups after the 6th round so I did jumping pull ups to finish the last 8 rounds. The looks im getting from the body builder guys in the gym is awsome, I wish I had a camera! Can't wait to see how much crossfit helps me for my summer job of Wildland fire fighting. Thanks for the workouts!

Amazingly though I hit the wall on the pushups though which surprised me. I thought I could've cranked out 15 but hey, CF never ceases to amaze me.

Cindy as Rx (12rnds+5PLU & 10PSU) See adds.

My standard for this WOD on the Air Squats is Bottom to Top. I use the Big F-in Flat Egg (BFFE) to bottom out on. In addition the feet are placed on top of the BFFE to create a progressive push-up. Any object can be used in this manner as long as it requires the user to go low (bottom to top) on the squats. Preferably something that doesn't give a springlike effect for the return trip back up. As for the push ups, use a MedBall and put your feet on it balancing on your toes. This is also fun while performing ring push-ups.

This combo creates a much different requirement for output, and the cycles show. This is also a good way to keep everyone in your group honest in regards to how far they are going on the squats.

Yes, Shana is HOT!

feeling a bit run down today...really hit it hard the last two days on the 50 and running, so...
went for a one set max of chin ups, pullups, hspu, dips and OH squat. Numbers still low but given week 7 they are improving, and the workouts are not kicking my butt as bad as they did in the beginning.

"Mary"
5 HSPU
10 Single leg sqt
15 pullups, kipping

6 sets + 5 HSPU + 10 single leg
used a 10 pd weight to counter balance on sqts. really not very good at them at all.
first set of HSPU was quality, after that is was more like head dips, but still better than previous attempts at HSPU. Mostly a strength issue vice cardio when I normally do a tougher "Cyndy" with 5 pullup, 15 push ups, 25 squats, 18/19 sets in 20 min.
So all in all, nor terribly successful, but my first time doing the tougher Mary.

We did a workout that was put on the board at the Level II cert at CrossFit One World. We later found out that it was supposed to be 5 rounds, not just 3.

3 rounds for time of:
- 5 deadlifts
- 5 cleans
- 5 push press
- 10 pull-ups
- 15 box jumps

Rx'd weights were 95/65 for guys/gals.

I used 135# and a 24" box, and did full squat cleans instead of power cleans.

Time: 5:26

There are tons of people/ athletes on this site that can attain the 2:20/ 2.5 bodyweight D.L. you mention. I haven't seen that as a WOD or anything, but I know that Speal I'm sure can smoke that.
The 2:20 is going to be hard to kill, but the 2.5 is totally attainable, as is the 2:20. If those are your goals.
I haven't tried to max out my D.L. for safetly reasons, but I just did the WOD with 5 sets of 275 D.L. and at 128 at the time that wasn't too bad. I didn't have a belt and I didn't chaulk up or anything. I know I can do 325 becuase I have not that long ago and it wasn't a max. As for 2:20. I would need to do that outdoors. The treadmill is not really good for maxing out with the running. I do the max, 10 mph when I do the 4x400 with 50 airsquats and that feels like I could do that for 800 easily if that was my WOD. That would put me at closer to 3:00 I think, but I know I can go faster than that for just a 800 race if you would call it that. I do NO training for running, other than the WOD's that coach puts out there and I know Speal can smoke the runs, from his videos and the Games times, with a sick vertical challenge.
Anyhoo, I just wanted to let you know that you can do it if you put your mind to it and train hard and intelligently, adn eat right, adn sleep right. Sleep and workout oppportunities are my biggest challenges right now with our little ones, but I never get too mad at a missed WOD when I need to take care of the little ones. Priorities. I just go nuts at the next opp at the gym. That's all... Good luck with your training.

my first crossfit workout ever.....

5 rounds in twenty minutes...... seriously out of shape, but then again, i've never been a really conditioned athlete. i was proud of myself just for doing it. afterwards, i had to sit for about 20 minutes with my head spinning. I was going through all of the reasons why i should never do this again. once i recovered fully, though, I was ready for the next one, to be as good as i can, even if that's not much.

From the second round on, i had to use a pullup-assist machine. I'm ashamed. But i like this alot. I can't wait to join a crossfit class when i move to the bay area!

Happy with the result considering a tough Tabata Something Else yesturday. Been crossfiting a little on-and-off during the autumn due to repeted colds and a nasty back-thing 3 weeks ago (after Fran).

Anyhow nice to be back :-)

MERRY CRISTMASS TO YOU ALL CROSSFITERS!!

14 rounds plus 5 pullups, 10 pushups and 9 squats. Finished off the 15th round in 20:09. The nearly complete 15th round reps are the sum of my PR -- and more than two rounds better than when this came up the last time.

First time: 8 rounds
Second: 10
Third: 12
Fourth: 14
Fifth: 12-plus
Sixth: this one

And "polk"? Thirty second per-round average? Unreal.

Pistols still rubbish. Had to use 8KG KB as a counterweight to stop me leaning too far forward. Need to work on these a lot!!!

This was my first Crossfit workout ever. I did 15 rounds, but as a newbie needed to do supported pullups. I've never done 150 pushups ever in my life, and was kind of surprised that I could.

I've been doing a kettlebell workout and running between for the past few months - apparently it's been doing something!

I expected my arms to be the most tired at the end of this, but weirdly it was my legs that felt most worked! Really looking forward to keeping up with this workout!

11rnds, not full handstand pushups, and pullups assisted.

Comment #728 - Posted by: Jarrad at February 9, 2009 4:13 AM

Mark: 22 rounds + 5/10/2
(focus = chest to ground every pushup)

Theresa: 14 rounds + 5/7 (small band k.pulls)
(focus = all push ups no knees)

Comment #729 - Posted by: Mark & Theresa at February 9, 2009 8:07 AM

"Mary"
Complete as many rounds in 20 minutes as you can of:
5 Handstand Push-ups
10 One legged squats, alternating
15 Pull-ups

6 rounds.

I'm able to go just half way down on the handstand push ups and 3/4 down on the one leggers. I stayed after class to work on the one leggers a little.

Cindy:

Got a personal best today. 17 rounds. Never eclipsed 12 before today. Actually did all of the pullups without jumping. Huge stride for me.
