Cool WOD and even cooler Vid. Nice work Sevan and Carey.

Thank goodness I got some chalk. I don't care if the Tooth thinks it's for wimps. I need that bar staying in my hands.

So how do i reserve my copy of this video? The little trailer already makes it seem badass.

One day, i hope to be Games worthy :)

I can't wait till this comes out! Until, then I'm scaling tomorrow's WOD. Someday I'll be able to DL 110# more than what I weigh repeatedly. It's a long and glorious uphill fight!

Wow, cant wait for the video to come out.

We officially opened CF NWA this weekend. Had a good turnout. We finally hung our rings and got my first muscle-up on my first try.

Nice teaser; when do we get to see the whole thing? I'm stoked.

Did this WOD the other day after a couple weeks off. It was rough - 5:11.

Starting the Catalyst Athletics website tomorrow, we'll see if I can't get some strength this winter. Get after it.

Comment #4 - Posted by: Kevin

Yes. This was the WOD Speal did in ~3 minutes at the games.

I did this WOD in 4:17 a week after the games.

Here we go with another scaled-up WOD! To be completed tomorrow:

Five rounds for time of:
375 pound Deadlift, 5 reps
10 Burpee Pull-ups, chest from deck to bar.

Comment #39 - Posted by: REB at December 14, 2008 7:16 PM

herm

you could keep your power output a little higher by segmenting the burpees and pullups, do all the burps then all the pullups. As Greg Everett says, burpee pullups are a good parlor trick but not an excellent exercise. I agree. You'll spend too much time transitioning... I guess do both and see which is more taxing

Comment #40 - Posted by: matt Wichlinski at December 14, 2008 7:17 PM

Both of the items of the lift are "easy" alone; however, for some reason the combo of the two kills me. Looking forward to this one again. This is a fave.

Comment #46 - Posted by: Mel

Gaucoin is correct. 185 #.

Comment #37 - Posted by: matt Wichlinski

Matt, I think you're right. I'll do strict burpees, meaning chest to deck and "object 8 inches above reach" jumps. The DL at 375 should be a nut buster.

I don't like those clapping burpees used at the Games. They are too subject to scrutiny IMO.

Comment #57 - Posted by: Tom E at December 14, 2008 8:24 PM

The burpees in today’s WOD have inspired me to make by first posting to comments. The link below is a video of a WOD inspired workout. It’s done in the stairwell of hi-rise apartment building in Jakarta. Like most big cities in developing countries, it is challenging to get outside for exercise (heavy pollution, no green spaces, traffic, etc.). So, this workout gets us out of the gym for some added variety.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBda1HW7DPM

My burpee form is terrible, but the second-day muscle soreness from this tells me that I still got a good workout. Crossfit has been hugely beneficial in the past few months, in helping me in my lifelong battle with weight. I have lost about 40 pounds since January 2007 when I made a big lifestyle change New Year’s Resolution. But, I still have much work to do to reach a healthy long-term weight and fitness level. Crossfit has been helpful in keeping me on the right path, and I look forward to learning more in the certification in Brisbane in May (a long trip, but well worth it I think).

As the holiday season approaches (often not a great time of year for fitness), I seek to re-commit myself to my program – revised and fine-tuned based on what I have learned from reading crossfit.com for the last few months. I started a blog to track the journey, but the postings wavered as my commitment waned during the past year.

http://candotujuh.blogspot.com/search?updated-min=2006-01-01T00%3A00%3A00%2B07%3A00&updated-max=2007-01-01T00%3A00%3A00%2B07%3A00&max-results=1

I welcome those who are fighting off weight to a healthier lifestyle to check out my blog. Perhaps you can learn from my mistakes, find encouragement, or help keep me accountable. In my short life, I have already lost and gained hundreds of pounds (but luckily lost and kept off about 100 from my highest weight). I can tell you that as support network is crucial. Hopefully, that network is found among your family and friends nearby, but an online support system is a useful supplement.

Happy Holidays from Indonesia.

Bears some similarity to what I did earlier this evening at home,

5 chins

I like the DL/burpee combo, I'll be using that sometime. I miss posting times on mainsite :) but working out at a local affiliate is sweet. CF Whistler rocks.

I got lucky: I attended the Certification Seminar at Chandler. I got instruction from uniquely talented people. I got inspired listening to the one person that's done more to change the way people think about fitness than anyone else.

If you are thinking about attending a certification seminar, but are unsure, then think on this: you are not complete in your fitness education until you have. Nothing else will change your life in such a profound way and nothing else will better equip you to positively change other peoples lives. And that, after all, is your job. So do right by yourself and your clients and sign up now.

I am humbled. Paul, London, England.

#33 Herm, 375? you're a badass. Guess I could scale to #315..

Ran into Carey on Sat night. He said he and Sevan were working long days and nights to wrap up the first full cut for Coach to see. From the clip here, Carey, it looks damn good! Congratulations guys. Nice work - this trailer alone evokes the real sense of CF and the Games.

Comment #72 - Posted by: CraigH at December 14, 2008 10:05 PM

Being with CF for the past month and a half one of the things I've picked up is there's never a break on a workout day. This is definitely no exception. Was getting a back massage from my friend today and she's like, 'Damn! Your back is tense!!' Yep, feel like a few deadlifts will fix that. I try to tell her I stretch 2-3 times a day and that if she did these workouts she would understand. Can't wait to start doing yoga though.

Good luck fellow CFers! God speed!

Comment #73 - Posted by: Matt Fibich at December 14, 2008 10:10 PM

I'm going to say f-it and do this WOD outside on my power-rack and lifting platform...I will mention that it is -36C currently...perhaps I'll take the stuff inside for the WOD...I wonder how long it'll take my 20kg bar to become warm enough to touch with bare hands. Might have to heat-gun it first. It's hard to get out there in this, clearing the 5 inches of snow off there, along with the tarps...

Introduced five more of my Soldiers to CF today. I started them off with a baseline workout I got from an M&F article on CF from Petranek Fitness in Santa Monica. The guys were all well smoked, but loved it. I think I'm starting my own CF cult out here in the sandbox! Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

Well done CrossFit staff at the Level I certification! This was well worth because it helped hone my technique on a lot of the foundational movements and gave me some good cues and pointers on those movements that have been slow for me to develop.

Good work Jason S. on being such a great host and there was a lot of positive feedback and glowing remarks about Competitive Fitness as a facility.

Air quality in Kabul, Afghanistan is laughable. 6000' elevation, excessive smoke and dirty air made this one of the most painful 17 minutes of my life.

Been on an extended break from any PT and this was a good snap off to bring me back to reality.

first time doing crossfit, scaled the deadlift to 231 lbs(105 kg) as i can't keep the grip on 275 lbs for 5 reps. time was 4:48.

My question is though is it better to scale down for proper grip or to go for the proper weight and be dropping the bar nearly every rep?

5 deadlift 155 lbs, 10 burpees

Rx: Latin root= Radix def.= numerical base or literally 'root'(as in plant), which led to extension of definition to 'recipe' which now is abbreviated as Rx for medications (as on prescriptions)and means "Prescribed" so,

'as Rx'd' means..'as Prescribed' or 'as ordered'.

Now time to do my WOD as Rx'd and post later....

Comment #171 - Posted by: DocMo at December 15, 2008 7:59 AM

#145 Jeff

"as rx'd" means "as prescribed" -- meaning that person did the work out exactly as stated and did not change it at all.
we commonly alter workouts due to not having correct equipment or not physically being able to do the workout as it is "prescribed", for instance, I cannot deadlift 275lbs five times so I wouldn't be able to do this workout "as prescribed"

I have noticed in the last 2 WOD's that I have had trouble breathing after the first round. It feels like I am breathing through a straw and cant get enough air, to the point I have to talk my self out of panicing. I never panic. Usually after a minute or 2 of taking slow deep breaths I return to normal, slightly out of breath where I can press on.

I have been doing CF for about a month now and this is new. is this normal? I am concerned!

Saturday my workout was a bit of a disaster. I am fighting myself on really needing a break/some time off and not wanting to take one (I sorta did in Sept but it was more of time off from crossfit with lots of running and hiking). End of year meetings, additional agendas for the job, working another job, less sleep, and working out hard for awhile, has left me a bit worn down. Then I fell down my stairs last Monday and still pretty banged up from that. So sat- I literally stopped the workout before I was finished. I was the next step from tears coming down my face.

Sunday- felt pretty good
Ran 10k, then soccer 2 hrs

Today back to feeling pretty sore, beat up, and worn out…we will see what I can do at the gym. My mind wants to workout, but my body is saying something different!

Dangit! I already did a WOD and I don't have access to a bar today. So this morning I did the one-arm workout w/ DBs (each side):
3 Rounds for time
10 thrusters (Left then Right arm)
10 snatches (" " ")
10 kettlebell swings (" " ")
10 bench w/ legs up (" " ")
10 row w/ a twist (" " ")
400 meter run

I went up in weights to 25# and did okay time: 22:25. Kicked my arse...as usual.

BTW, didn't rest yesterday. Ran 4.0 miles in 35 degree weather at 8 AM. Then played Ultimate Football in the afternoon. Surprsingly did not get winded. It was amazing!

I pretty much love CrossFit.

I am not a dr. and don't claim to be, but if your body is dragging that much, then you need to listen to it. It doesn't mean you are weak when you rest for a week. It means you are smart enough to let yourself recover, so that the next time you workout, you just might feel 85%-100%. Our bodies are pretty smart, and they know when we should go, and when we should stop. The Good Lord above made us that way. So, take a week off, rest up, and come back ready to set some PRs like never before. Just from one Xfitter to another.

Deadlifts were fine.

Burpees are murder. NOTHING gets my heart pumping faster than a set of burpees.

So - to anyone who took and/or succumbed to the 100-day Burpee challenge... did it:

A) Improve your body's reaction to burpees such that a set of 10 did not induce an out-of-body experience?

or

B) Merely improve your distance and aim in projectile vomiting?

I eagerly await your responses... :)

So i've been doing CrossFit for a few weeks now. I'm still trying to understand this rx'd thing? If you can, you do it as prescribbed correct? Almost all of if the WOD's I can do at the prescribed weight. Does some of the rx'd stuff play in in account for your body weight? My max for deads is just 20 pounds more than prescribed. Being only 150 lbs I think I might die at 275 5x5.

185# deadlifts get really heavy really fast. The first 2 rounds were cool.. The last round was murder.

Took me about 8 minutes.

the burpees were so easy compared to the dls. I had to stop on every single dl on the last 2 rounds. >:O. Very frustrating. But.. It's done

Look at comment #223. Rx'd is the same weight no matter what you weigh(unless the Rx'd weight is a %of bodyweight like in Linda). That said, don't kill yourself to do a weight just because it is Rx'd. Make sure you take safety into consideration and do a weight that is appropriate with the goal of doing the Rx'd weights eventually and maybe even getting to the point of some crazy firebreathers on here like Herm who scales up!

Hello All,

I have been doing Crossfit for about 2 months now and it is a great workout and community. The videos posted that have the incredible times are more than enough motivation to keep going.

I have a quick question. What are the best type of sneakers to use for olympic lifts? I am currently using an old pair of running shoes but am pretty sure these are not the best for these workouts.

Thanks!

Preemptively I want to say that this isn't a complaint or a hint at sexism, but an honest question: is there a reason that the RX'd weight for women isn't posted along with the WOD? I understand that one can figure out the weight for women a variety of ways (e.g., Brandx, simple calculation); I understand that all individuals are responsible for their own training program-- including scaling and substitutions; and I understand that the site is fabulously FREE (which is why this isn't a complaint) but, hypothetically, let's say I'm lazy and don't like figuring out my RX'd load and this [hypothetical] laziness has prompted me to be curious as to why the RX for women isn't readily available on the .com site, too.

Yea, running shoes can suck to do strict OL workouts. I wear weightlifting shoes most of the time, but a lot of people wear Chuck Taylor's, wrestling shoes, or racing flats just because that cushion in running shoes feels too soft. For powerlifting, like in today's workout, I like to wear my racing flats for sure.

Scaled to 205 DL. Now there are two giant holes in my head where 7 days ago there were wisdom teeth. I was commanded in no uncertain terms not to work out until today, and I felt pretty light-headed warming up. Very grateful to be back on the Xfit train; no doubt it made my recovery much easier. Awesome job OPT and Speal, and Calgary Colin. Fantastic trailer! Avg HR 178, peak 182, rec. 61.

I thought I would do better, but this WOD reminded me that I'm not that strong...or fast at burpees. First time on this one for me.

High so far today of about 25 degrees F in my detached garage gym (17 last night). Warm up was the worst part...pull-ups on a cold skinny bar. Any best practices from people in garage gyms that get cold weather more often than we do in the Seattle area?

This WOD scared me at the get go more than any other I have come across. But I so wanted to do the rx'd women's weight of 185. I thought I could manage to at least start there.

Well 185 wouldn't budge. I stopped the timer, took off 20lbs and tried again. After one rep, I knew I wouldn't be able to last five rounds, let alone finishing the first. I was in tears. Frustrated that I couldn't manage a measly 165lbs. Dropped it down to 155 and decided to forget the time and just get it finished.

I don't know how long it took, somewhere north of 30 minutes. I also was running low on time so dropped it down to 135 for the last 8dl.

I think the fear and trepidation messed with my brain on this one.

What is a good sub for deadlifts? I have an inguinal hernia that pops out each time I try to deadlift anything too heavy. How about straight leg deadlifts and squats? (for some reason, these don't bother my hernia too much) Would the weights work out 1:1?

Thanks for any and all input.

Alternating grip: I notice in the Rippetoe Videos that the Dead Lift is performed with an overhand grip (probably even hook grip). Am I cheating myself if I can do more now with alternating grip but in the future won't be able to get to higher loads?

alt grip is for safety as the load gets high or fatigue sets in

perspective: my max is 415-418 and anything under 350 I do overhand for singles triples and up I alternate grip

For this workout even at a light 275, I used alt grip so that I would not loose weight due to grip fatigue. Mix it up and they will both inprove, mix and overhand.

I was completely gassed but compared to the amount of time I used to work out I feel the gym thinking ... there's no way that I just worked out that hard in that short amount of time... it's hard to explain, trust me no dig on crossfit at all, it destroys me everytime, I just love not being in the gym for an hour and a half every night to feel like I'm staying in shape.

Prior to CF:

1) I would never have even thought of combining these two exercises.
2) I never would have considered this combination of exercises "a workout."
3) I never would have tried it.
4) I never would have looked forward to it.
5) I never would have been able to finish it.

And that, to me, is the beauty of crossfit.

Went out way too hard then kinda bonked. I did the first two rounds in about a minute then the last 3 rounds took like a minute each. The "busy-ness" of finals week and moving from school back home has left me eating on the run a lot lately and no groceries had me eating bad food. I can definately feel it. Cannot wait to start zone/paleo this month.

I also cannot wait for this movie.

I have been doing Crossfit now for around 4 months and after weight training for 3.5 years I was becoming bored of my daily workouts and found it quite challenging to drag my ass to the gym. Then my brother introduced me to Crossfit. I wont lie at first when I saw the workouts I thought that they wouldnt be challenging enough for me and the idea of building your cardio through your strength traning and your strength through you cardio training I thought was total B.S. Yes I was blind. I decided to give it a try to show my brother that this would be easy. He told me the WOD was:
30 HSPU
40 Pull-ups
50 KB Swings
60 Situps
70 Burpees
I figured no problem. Well after spending about 20 minutes puking in the parking lot of my gym while my brother did his burpees (I didn't do any)
I realized that this was the training I had been searching for, for so long.

Needless to say I have been Crossfiting for around four months and have gotten better results them ever and am in the best physical shape of my life.

I once was blind, but now I see.

Thanks Coach,

Matty

1 mile warm up at 8:00 pace

Then as rx'd 9:08 (that was a good bit of weight, and overhead clap on the burpee was a good touch)

i felt like a wuss for not beating 9:00 min. so I rested for about 20 min and then killed shoulders and ran a 6:30 mile and then worked abs to vommit in the mouth stage...... I truely love this stuff... Crossfit is amazing and I can't wait until I can post times like the studs and lady studs on this site.

6.11 as Rx'ed, 3s off of my Games time even done in 47 degrees in the AM darkness. I'll take it.

I figured out why the weight felt so funky at the Games - in the rush to go faster (which I didn't) I was letting go with my upper back muscles to allow the bar to drop further, but not taking the tension in those muscles back up prior to lifting - severely compromised rigidity in the 'lifting body.' Live and learn.

My first official WOD as I've been browsing for quite some time and getting lots of information.

M/27/250

Scaled to 225 for 5 sets but other than that as px'd - 7:55, which I'm questioning b/c I lost my stop watch so I used the stop watch on my cell and I was watching it everytime I got done with the DL since the phone was right in front of where I was doing them and I think on my last set of Burpees I got a text. So I think that stopped my time. Buying another stop watch when I leave here on my way to my second job.

Comment #752 - Posted by: Joseph Dennis at December 16, 2008 9:42 AM

Scaled DL down to 250, went slow because my back was still sore from friday.

About 15 minutes flat, could have gone a great deal faster, but didn't want to risk injury because of my still sore back.

CFWU x2 15 reps each + some hand stands, practicing how long I can hold one with out touching a wall. Also, practicing double unders now for warm up.

Used 125# for today's workout.
Total Time: 7:08

It was the correct weight for me. My max is 155# and I weigh 120. so #125 is as comfortable as I feel at this time for multiple reps.
I liked this work out. ;-)

M/ 34/ 128 lbs/ 5'-6"
Slight modified weights used on D.L.
I did this in 10:00
Rnd 1 (w/275) 1:00
Rnd 2 (w/245) 2:39
Rnd 3 (w/245) 1:58
Rnd 4 (w/245) 1:58
Rnd 5 (w/255) 2:22
Total: 9:59
I did this in a new facility. They only had octagonal plates and I did this in a small rack, that actually prevented me from lifting up once or twice. I had to rush and really didn't get into it, but I'm happy with doing it in under 10 the first time out. I haven't D.L'd heavy at all in a while and at 128lbs not too bad.
I had to wait a couple days to do this WOD becuase I did the WOD where you do 3 rnds of: 24" box jumps 50 reps, 185 lb D.L. 21 reps, and 30 rep. Pullups. That kind of zapped my D.L. for a day or so. I didn't want to do this heavy D.L. right after that WOD
I think that once I get a few more pounds back and I'm up to about 135 as well as using regular round plates and in a more open space, I'll be able to cut that down considerably. Also, I was doing this at my lunch break and didn't have enough time to really warm up and go for it. If I had chaulk that would have helped as well...
enough with my excuses.. it was a good workout and I'll just have to put it out there better next time.
