CrossFit puts a link for both systems with the videos (wmv=PC, mov=mac). Or you can download Flip4mac free to play wmv files.

PC = Mc Cain
MAC = Obama

Coleco Vision = Pallin

That King Kong WOD needs an 800 m run between rounds, and you gotta lose the weight belt.

Impressive strength and power, though.

I previously used Linux for everything. Now I prefer Linux for servers and Mac OS for end-user stations and laptops.

Comment #20 - Posted by: Adam Drake at October 14, 2008 7:35 PM

Mac.

I have a random question for you wonderful people. I've been doing crossfit for just under a year now. I have been working myself back into shape after an operation. I have had to scale just about everything that I've done but have improved my strength and conditioning. Now that I'm getting more and more serious about this and now that I'm getting into better and better shape I'd like to get to the place where I am doing the WODs RXd. What I wanted to know was this: Is it better to go with the full weight knowing that I might be really slow at it even trying my damnedest, or should I keep cutting the weight, working on improving my speed and technique under load and then gradually upping the weight?
Thank you.

Comment #21 - Posted by: Nik - 29/ 6'6" / 210 - Ottawa at October 14, 2008 7:35 PM

MAC is same PC, same hardware :). Proper question MAC OS or WIN, or MAC OS is linux anyway...

Comment #22 - Posted by: kze at October 14, 2008 7:36 PM

PC

and i HATE ipods.

Comment #23 - Posted by: dani at October 14, 2008 7:36 PM

Mac for when I actually want to use the computer. Chat, itunes, code development, web browsing - the experience is way better on a mac.

PC for (a) gaming and (b) work stuff like Outlook. Notice the common denominator? When you're in Outlook, or a game, the OS doesn't matter - you just live in the app.

Comment #24 - Posted by: justinrocks M/34/172/6'1" at October 14, 2008 7:36 PM

Can anyone tell me -

when deadlifting multiple reps, do you set the weight completely down in between reps? Kind of along those same lines, is the lift done at the top of the movement? (As in, can you just drop the weight or does form on the way down count too?)

And I use a mac btw!

Comment #25 - Posted by: Audrey at October 14, 2008 7:36 PM

King Kong in 7:37. That's what I call a beast! Even though I cannot do a squat clean that heavy yet, I'm going to try that one eventually.

Comment #26 - Posted by: Herm @ CF Los Altos, CA at October 14, 2008 7:38 PM

That was absurd; King Kong indeed. I'd like to know how many people even have those weights as their PR. Just as long as it never shows up as the WOD, I'm good.

Comment #27 - Posted by: tom_boston at October 14, 2008 7:38 PM

Both. Or either.

PCs are better for some things, Macs for others. When I'm on one I always miss a couple of features from the other - they're both just tools to get the job done.

Comment #28 - Posted by: pinstripes and pedals at October 14, 2008 7:38 PM

Is it enough not to anything at all on rest day. I've been doing crossfit for 6 months and sometimes I feel like I want to do more.

Comment #29 - Posted by: Matt at October 14, 2008 7:39 PM

PC. I gave it a try and went back to the PC. I guess I prefer the real world for business...Maybe if I was a quirky emo type or had long hair then I would buy a mac....or if I were voting for Obama. But Im not so a PC for me.

I had a Mac and then I got so pissed off at the Mac wizard at the Apple store that I returned it. He said he was not allowed to show me how to find codecs for some of the applications that I wanted to run and told me to search the Mac forums. I told him I was not a dork and then he showed me his Apple tattoo. Yeah nuff said.

Comment #35 - Posted by: Chaplain Mike at October 14, 2008 7:44 PM

#21 Nik - the answer is both. If you can do the Rx'd weight even as a 1RM, once in a while you should try to do it, even if it takes a super-long time.

Remember that you are developing work capacity across broad time and modal domains. What this means is that while you're working up to the rx'd weight, it is of great benefit to you to do a light 'n fast WOD as well as a slow 'n heavy version of the same protocol.

As for KING KONG - that was pretty ridiculous. Who thought up such a workout? Did it come from a thought experiment? Awesome performance.

Comment #36 - Posted by: Alex m/28/6'3'/166# at October 14, 2008 7:44 PM

Macs are way better!

I'm an engineer and have to code all day on a PC. But when I get home, I have an iMac and a macBook pro, 2 iphones, iPod nano...

They rock for video editing. I do all my editing in Final Cut Studio. And it looks like most of the posted vids are edited on macs (if I had to guess).

Comment #37 - Posted by: Reno_Ty at October 14, 2008 7:45 PM

I'm going to side with the PC.

Why? Same reason I side with Crossfit. Openness. Seriously.

Mac is Apple, you want it then you buy the whole package...from Apple. More memory? Apple. Operating system.. Apple. Something about it sucks...too bad. If you buy a Mac you're stuck with Apple. Remember Apple is both hardware and software you HAVE to take both or nothing. (Ever see Tron? Steve Jobs=Stark and MAC=MCP)

PC is about competition. You can shop; there is a marketplace for ideas. So CompanyX puts out bad memory you go buy CompanyY's memory, just as it is through out the entire PC's hardware and software.

Sure Apple is a little open in places but in those same places PC is hugely open. Where Apple is not PC is still open. Does being so open cause some issues like more viruses and compatibility issues? Sure, if Apple was open (and had as much market share) it'd have these problems too.

There is one thing Apple does right. It does multimedia stuff great, but why? Well media carries communication by definition and if the majority of the people communicating use Apple they have default the "media control" that has the ear of the world regardless of true value or worth.

Apple turns pseudo-intellectuals and hippies into de facto shills of a non-open non-modifiable product. (Note not everyone using a MAC is a "pseudo-intellectual" or a "hippy" but these two groups complain the most about corporations while typing on their little close-sourced Macs.)

Think I'm wrong and simply switch "APPLE" and "MAC" to "Globo GYM" and "PC" to "Crossfit". Except for the current market share of PC and that current share of Crossfit the analogy seems to work 100%.

I am a fan of cutting the weight back on items such as Fran or WOD's that have really heavy dead lifts paired up with running and other exercises. These are meant to be metcon workouts so speed, power and lung function are key, not slow heavy lifting. Save the heavy stuff for when when it is a 3x5 day or sets of 1. You will eventually build up the strength and be able to move up in weight.

Comment #40 - Posted by: Cameron at October 14, 2008 7:48 PM

I have a PC, but prefer MAC.

It will be sometime before anyone duplicates King Kong (much less beats 7:37).

Based on his massive size, I kinda' assumed that he could handle the heavy dead / FS for a few rounds; I was most impressed with the solid MU's and HSPU's that the big fella' was knocking out. Stellar performance "Big O"!

It's just an email machine that I use to find porn on once and a while, or everyday. Whatever. Besides, it doesn't matter as long as I get my WOD.

Definitely PC...

coming from a computer science / electrical engineering major @ Stanford.

Mac banks on the fact that they have a hip advertising campaign and make people feel cool. For people in the know, having a regular computer is many times more convenient and versatile both in software and hardware.

Comment #47 - Posted by: MarcD at October 14, 2008 7:58 PM

Everyone wishes they had a mac because of the image associated with it, but when it comes time to drop $1500 on a mac when you can get the equivalent pc for $750, most people make the smart choice and buy the pc. That's why apple's market share is something like 10-12%.

i had a mac for a year and a half and juts sold it. so...pc. you can play better games :)

Comment #51 - Posted by: RSD at October 14, 2008 8:02 PM

PC = Personal Computer, both an Apple computer and a Windows computer are PC's. Anyway...

For photography or video editing I use nothing but Apple as my preferred tools are Aperture for photography and Final Cut Studio 2 for video editing.

Remember that the new Mac's are all Intel based computers -- so they can all run Windows, Unix, or a Linux distro. So in terms of flexibility, Apple gives me the ability to run OS X and also run any other OS either virtualized or native. And if you want to play Windows games, an Apple computer makes a decent gaming system as well.

At the core, the computer is just a device for you to get your work, or play, done. If you're more familiar with Windows or OS X, or if that specialty application only runs on a particular platform, then use the one that works for you.

Most of my personal computers are Apple, but my work servers are Windows or Unix as I need HA and clustering -- something Apple doesn't do (well).

PC

fun video. I'd like to see more videos of people working out. They pump you up, more than the informational ones(not that watching Nicole talk about CrossFit doesn't pump me up), before hitting the workout for the day. I know its not a walk in the park making a good video like y'all do but I just thought I would put in my opinion.

Comment #53 - Posted by: Austin McLean - 25 yom - 162 at October 14, 2008 8:03 PM

#38 penty,
I have to disagree with you on just about every point. I'm guessing you don't own a mac...
First of all, you can buy more memory from tons of third party vendors for a mac. Second, you can run windows on a mac via bootcamp, parallels, etc...

I'll bet you didn't know that a macBook pro runs Windows vista faster than just about any other laptop on the market.

But here's the rub: You CAN'T run Mac OS on a pc!

So you say you want choice? Buy a Mac Pro. Hot-swappable hard drives, eight pentium cores, memory expandable up to 16 GB, optical audio, firewire, lots of slots for expansion...

Seems to me, Macs give you more choices than PC's.

I personally take offense to saying Crossfit would be PC and GloboGym would be Mac.

Macs have less than 10% of market share. They are the underdogs!! Lots of people don't like Steve Jobs, but their engineers produce amazing products.

I bought Leopard the day it was released and it ran like a dream out of the box. Vista stumbled out of the box for a year and people still hate it after tons of updates.

That's all I have to say about that.

Mac.

It's true that there are fewer total options for some software categories, but those that Mac has are excellent and are really all you need. It has the reliability and versatility of Linux (through Fink) combined with the best GUI in the business. Unless you are a user with specific proprietary software needs (games, GIS, etc.) that can only be met with Windoze, Mac is absolutely the way to go.

Comment #57 - Posted by: jm at October 14, 2008 8:13 PM

But I do like the Yankees, who are surely the McCain/PC of baseball.

Comment #58 - Posted by: uri 38m/5'11"/160 at October 14, 2008 8:15 PM

Come on...MAC, there is no competition. I have a 15" MacBook Pro, 20" iMac, 24" iMac, iPhone, iPod Shuffle, and 2 iPod Nano's. I got mad brand loyalty!

I love hearing my PC friends complain about viruses, software issues, crashes and constant restarts. It's like a guy sitting back and listening to girls talk about all their "women" problems. It's so comforting. PC's may be less expensive, but you have to consider the stability and reliability of a Mac coupled with its longevity. I have seen friends go through 2 or 3 PC's while I sit working on my first iMac. They all tell me the same thing "I should have bought a Mac."

King Kong. Great video! WOW! That guy is a beast! I was most impressed with the muscle-ups and HSPU. Not many guys that big can manipulate their body through space like that. "Also I can "right click" w/ my pc which up untill just recentlly w/ a Mac you couldn't do that."

I developed on a Mac from 1999-2006 as a programmer and always had right click ability with my 2-button mouse. Just cause Apple didn't ship a 2-button mouse with the machines didn't mean the functionality was missing. ;)

In 7 years developing on Macs and PCs before my job change to a PC only CAD job, I enjoyed both, though both presented their own quirks. For video, sound, and general "multimedia", the Mac has my vote. For gaming and programming/development, the PC just has more tools/games developed for it because of it's market share. But when it came to bugs, goofs, glitches, and general oddities of system and programs during development and roll-out, the Mac just always had less problems. So that's my take.

If I could afford a really good Mac, I'd love to have one, but I'll gladly use my $500 PC for gaming and checking my email and the WOD.

Nice work "Big O"!

Way to set the mark way high!

I like the idea of the workout. Where are the weights relative to your (his if a 3rd party answers)1 rep max on the weighted lifts?

Your dradlift looked to be way stronger than 455 and you made the cleans look easy as well. I hesitate to guess, but it looked like 75-80% on cleans and 90% on deads.

I wouldn't mind doing a King Kong Jr. at the relative maximums.

By the way, good choice in footwear. The frees are great for deadlifting and good enough for cleans.

I'm going to toss in a vote for Apple (Mac) on this one.

My very first computer experience was on an Apple IIe and it was incredible. After that, a Performa 6800 that ran like a champ for many years. When the Performa was 'retired', we went through a string of Windows machines from Hewlett-Packard, Packard-Bell, and Compaq, all of which died shortly after their measly warranties expired. My family promptly went back to Macs - a Yosemite tower (with the matching behemoth of a monitor - awesome!), an eMac, and the first generation of the cheese-grater-style PowerMac.

The first-generation eMac is still kicking it back home - my Mom, who swore for years that she would never touch a computer, can use it to manage and print her photo collection, send emails, and browse the web. Even my Dad (who still brags to strangers about how he doesn't own a cell phone) has figured out how to go online.

As for myself, I have a first generation MacBook for schoolwork while a G4 Cube that I refurbished is connected to my TV to function as a DVD player and a source of extra music storage (yes, I have a few iPods too...). Honestly, if a 20-year-old chick can maintain and upgrade these machines, anyone can.

Long story short, Macs have the distinct advantage of a more tightly controlled manufacturing process - from the physical machine to the software inside. I have never had a negative experience when I have sought help from Apple Care and if you buy a protection plan, even the most expensive repairs will be prompt and very likely will not cost you a cent.

Anyone else worried about lack on control from the top of the deadlift?!

Still a great effort, just though the deadlifts looked like asking for an injury.

Cheers.

Mac forever. My making the switch was huge. I cannot imagine ever going back, which I won't. It's like seeing in color for the first time after a lifetime of black and white.

The only thing that comes close, as far as a profound paradigm shift in my life, was when I stumbled onto this site (how, I have know idea) and for some bizarre reason actually do these exercises and adopt this philosophy, drank the Kool-Aid.

I left globo-gym style of fitness in the dust and I don't ever want to go back or even look back. In fact, I am genuinely incapable of going back because it changed me for the good.

Hi I'm a PC and I think that workout should be named The Hulk instead. No f'king way King Kong could do a muscle up or hand stand push ups. I've seen the Hulk do one handed muscle ups. Impossible you say? Isn't jumping over buildings impossible? Hulk says not.

Well I'm a Mac and I think King Kong is a great name for this workout. King Kong can lift anything!

PC: King Kong is one dimensional, just like your stupid claim to fame about picture/video application superiority. Sure he can lift buildings, but he has a vertical leap of about 4 inches. I know yo may argue 4 inches is sufficient but trust me Mac females say not. Crossfit is about testing and strengthening all aspects of fitness. Duhh!

Mac: Shut up PC! I've had enough of your versatile sarcasm and wit. I'm going to go work on my dead lifts.

PC: Case in point!

How do you upgrade the hardware on a Mac? How does a Mac have better graphics when all it has is a low end ATI card? My Linux box has an ATI Radeon HD 3650. Far better graphics than what any Mac has to offer. If you want better graphics all you need to do is upgrade the video card on your Mac. Oh wait...How do you upgrade the hardware on a Mac? LOL :-)

Mac compared to a PC is the same as:

CrossFit vs traditional globo gym training

Increased work capacity vs increased points of failure

Functional vs Isolated

Fitness vs Pathology (lets call Linux Wellness)

Comment #96 - Posted by: CHAD_ETOWN (27/5'11"/178)d at October 14, 2008 9:40 PM

Windows!

Mac is a closed system. PC is open. With a PC you have a lot more control to mess with the guts of things if you want. You can't really mess with OSX. Non-power users prefer Mac because it is shiny and pretty, not due to any significant superior functionality.

Linux is the Ron Paul of operating systems. It doesn't get involved in your applications.

bout 1/2 hour ago came back from attending my local affiliate's (Valley CrossFit) 7pm intermediate co-ed class....

Mike Latch, Becca Voigt, Josh -
thank u for a great workout; for me, it reinforced one of the imperatives of CrossFit - root out one's weakness (the goat!) so that one may overcome it. i suck so horrifically at wall-ball that it's truly fantastic. had the 16# ball for the set of 21 and struggled with that, had to grab the 20# for the set of 15 and nearly died with that, and then struggled again with the 16# (meaning i re-did about as many missed reps as good reps) for the set of 9 and 3. hole-y cheese is that a huge weakness for me. subbin thrusters for wall-ball in the mainsite WODs does no good lemme tell ya! i wuz one of the latter half of participants to finish that workout and more than a lil disappointed in meself. (altho i wuz holding to strict form standards; target missed or uncaught wall-balls don't count, kb swings to overhead, k2e with patellas actually contacting olecranons, plate squats to below parallel, still, my biz wuz SLOW, all cuz o those wall-balls).

long story short, i made up my mind (with the help of fellow VCFer Trixie) by the end of post-class "play time" to lay down dues for a month of classes with the Valley CrossFit crew.

here now begins my experiment with affiliate WOD'ing. i think i will try to also keep up with the mainsite WODs as well (maybe with a lil less than full intensity), but if 2 a days begin to become troublesome, affiliate workout performance may take precedence for the next month.

i just hate tossin that damn ball and f*ing missing that 10' target.... rrr!

I'm currently not aware of anything that a PC does better than a Mac, except run applications that are only available on for Windows. In which case, running something like VMWare Fusion or Bootcamp for those specific applications allows one to enjoy the best of both worlds.

I cannot fathom an amount of money that could make me enjoy working primarily on a Windows machine again.

PC for me. Mac's are just PC's now with a fancy case and a better OS for a lot more money. I can't believe they are selling the new Macbook Pro with only 2GB ram standard when Dells that cost 30% as much come with 3 or 4GB standard. Memory is cheap as dirt these days.

I own an iPhone 3G and love it, but I hate how iTunes tries to take over and manage my media for me. No thanks, I'll control it myself. OSX is nice for general computer use (email, web etc) but a PC is better for gaming and development (in my opinion). Use a PC at work of course as well.

>>MAC is same PC, same hardware :). Proper question MAC OS or WIN, or MAC OS is linux anyway...

Noooooo... Linux is a kernel, OSX is not built on the linux kernel, and the unix part built on top of the non-linux kernel is based on BSD, which also has nothing to do with linux. The only way they are kind of related is that they both implement unix, kinda.

Also, to be fair, Mac's are PCs as well, since PC stands for "personal computer".. but I vote for OSX. I prefer unix to DOS, it's more stable, in general it's a better programming environment (I'm an engineer), more secure, more easily available free software, better performance in some areas, no registry hell to deal with (a major cause of instability and insecurity, and bugs), etc.

PC/Linux, boot to Windows for games. While I like the stability of OSX, I find it annoyingly restrictive when I want to do something some way besides the "One True Apple Way"--with my Gentoo Linux box I can do ANYTHING I want, the way I want. The only thing I can't do the way I want in Linux is play games, and I couldn't do that in OSX either. I have to use a Mac at work (scientific research) and I'd MUCH MUCH MUCH rather, for a much lower price, have a commodity PC built from custom parts, with more horsepower, running an OS I can tweak the way I need.

My first computer was a little 350MHz Blueberry Mac. I absolutely LOVED that computer. You will never find a more user friendly stable OS than a Mac. That thing rarely, if ever, crashed. Still have it running iTunes looking cute and retro!

However, when I started PC gaming and building my own boxes...I went totally PC. Loved the Mac, but I needed to be able to freely tinker and tweak my computers and couldn't do that much with the Mac.

While a nice computer, from the software perspective, owning a Mac is kind of like owning a really nice car you can only drive on 40% of the hi-ways and roads. Imagine that! Nope, this car won't run down that road, so you can't go there :P

Mac for me.

I am an MCSE, and I switched to Mac after xp. I used to scream from the walls the joys of Windows after XP came out. I was all about PC, and always asked Mac users: why are you playing with those toys?

Then I played with OS X for 15 mins. Went home and started selling all my PC stuff. It's just better. The hardware is better, sure you can get a Smell for 600 bucks, but try putting that against an 8 core, 32 gigs of ram, 4 terabytes of storage and a 2 gig SLI graphics in a Mac pro.... that Smell is now WAY more expensive than a Mac. (This fact has been proven by MANY PC publications)

As for the hardware being the same... they aren't. Apple makes all their own logic boards (motherboard in PC lingo) in house. SOME hardware may be the same, but they don't utilize it the same way. My G5 quad core (out YEARS before PCs were using multi-core in consumer products) ran at a 2.5 gigahertz. Doesn't sound fast but PPC is a RISC CPU, Intel is a CISC CPU, Clock speed means nothing, it was the Mhz Myth. My 2.5Ghz was almost equivalent to a 4.5Ghz intel. Not the same hardware. The processors now are the same, but the way the OS utilizes that hardware makes a huge difference too.

As for Mac's running Vista faster, you all can say its bull, but better check your sources. PCWorld:"best computer for vista" CPU:"Vista faster on the Macbook Pro than on the Dell" PCMag:" Vista ran error free on the MacBook Pro"

p.s. Not emo, and not a hippy

Just wanted to answer a few of the questions about Matt. When we shot this video he had just returned from 6 months in Army intel school. When he left he weighed around 240 & now he is down to around 218. Obviously, he's not even close to Welbourne's size, but at 6'1" 218, is bigger than most elite CrossFitters.

As for the workout - we like to play with super-heavy barbell movements in our metcons (80-90% of 1RM), coupled with either high skill gymnastics moves, or a balls-out cardio sprints. This usually provides the requisite amount of suck that we have grown to love. Matt is somewhere between 80-85% on both of the lifts in the video. He has a 535 dead & a 305 C&J.

Yes, he is a beast - he also has a 21 minute 3 mile run, 2:36 Fran, & 30 rounds of Cindy. When we shot this video we really wanted to see if anyone else could not just finish the workout, but could beat Matt's time. We had a short list of athletes (Jeremy Thiel, Josh Everett, Anthony Bainbridge, Matt Murski, Jason Khalipa) that we thought would challenge Matt's time, but after seeing what this workout (i.e. the squat cleans) did to an athlete as big as Matt, we honestly don't know what to expect.

Have at it boys (& ladies, Gillian?). We're excited to see what happens.

#2, Todd - I wondered the same thing.

Mac, all the way.

Interesting, though, to see the responses here - the Mac folks just know they've got it. PC people have to defend, scrape up 8-year-old arguments, and hope that people won't actually try a Mac. 'Cause once you really do, you'll see what you've been missing. Just like CrossFit.

Comment #148 - Posted by: Adam K, M/36/6'4"/208 at October 15, 2008 4:32 AM

Feel free to love your Mac, but don't rely on it to be a safe professional tool. Many people seem to work well in its interface, but overall, the maturity of the product and the attitude of the company are 10 years behind the competitors.

As a professional security researcher, I've worked with many vendors to fix security vulnerabilities I've discovered in their products. Overall, Apple has the worst track record in terms of acknowledgement, reproduction, and remediation of issues. In addition, OS X lacks the modern interal operating system protections which make reliable exploitation so difficult on vista and (some) newer linux distrobutions.

Instead of working on their technology, they use their marketing team, and their relatively small market share as a shield, and claim good security and stability.

I've used Mac's for many years, and my grudging conclusion to my professional career is that Apple has sadly damaged their brand as far as software goes, and in contrast, Microsoft has become amazing in terms of software protection. I know this seems odd to hear, but realize that solid information takes a few years to pass from professional to layman, just like in exercise science.

If you've got doubts, google my name for credentials.

Anthony Bainbridge was the first person I thought of too when I saw this video. Def think that him along with Everett could go sub 5 easily!

I might be able to do "King Kong", but 455 is my PR for DL, so doing it 3 times along with everything else might be a stretch at this point.

PC - I work as a mechanical engineer and until a year or so ago you could not run various engineering programs on a Mac. It probably will be a PC for the rest of my life because of habit, cost, etc. Ever try to transition from PC Word to Mac Word... frustrating! Though Mac's do have some cool software that comes with their computers (e.g. Garage Band).

MAC for sure.

I'm currently using a PC but want to switch as soon as I can convince the wife.

But it depends. For photos and music a MAC is the way to go.

For gaming, I'm going to say PC.

You have to remember, a printer is the only thing that a MAC won't be able to plug and play. Everything else is good to go. Whereas on a PC you need software for most things.

With the new technology of MAC's being built, I don't think they're outdated as quick either.

MAC!!!

Mac.

Security issues noted by Lurene Grenier are a concern that should be acknowledged and addressed. However, the simple truth is I've never had a modern mac (2003 and up) that has experienced crash issues and catastrophic hardware failures. By contrast, I've had 3 PC's in that time totally melt-down.

The minor issues I've had with Macs have been dealt with as follows:

* Bring computer to Apple Retail Store
* Apple tech diagnoses problem on the spot
* Apple tech either fixes problem immediatly (ie. if it is a software or battery issue) or orders part and schedules work time to fix it.
* Apple tech gives me computer right back...even if the part to fix it is on order. This is huge considering a failed optical drive does not make the computer unusable.
* When part arrives, apple tech fixes the mac within an hour of dropping it off.

With warranty repairs I've never been without my computer for more than an hour! Compare that to the process of sending your Dell back to Texas for diagnosis and repair.

With all of that said, they are not for everyone. There are some people who need the PC platform as there is a huge gap between the two platforms in terms of commercial application compatibility. PC's still rule the corporate IT culture. But those PC's are supported by smart, trained IT staffs whose job it is to know the corporate platform, and how to keep it operating properly.

Mac provide consumers and small businesses the same up-time peace of mind through their ease of use and retail support.

FWIW, my home now has 2 MacBooks, 1 iMac, 1 Airport Base Station, and an iPhone used by yours truly. Yeah...I guess I'm a Machead.

I'm an engineer for a defense contractor and I only use PCs. PCs have been around a whole lot longer and been proven.

Mac is just a craze, the new IT thing. Mac is associated as new, independent, cool, creative, etc. Mac is only good for photos, music, and other artsy stuff. If you want a business machine, get a PC. Mac will never be as good as PC.

PC

Broad range of software products.
Broad range of hardware components.
NEVER had a single problem with hardware components.
Easy to upgrade individual components at home instead of lugging it to some store.
NEVER had a virus on my PC because of anti-virus software and common sense.
No problems viewing videos online either.
I use it for work and play.
In fact, the only problem I've ever had with my PC is opening the case and cleaning on a normal basis.
Still use XP too because I like it.
Granted, the majority of the above has to do with the brand of PC I bought, and it sure as crap isn't a Dell, CrapWay (GateWay), or HP, but hey, it's still a PC.

Macs are cute and all, but that doesn't mean I want to own one.

K. Kibbe #143,

Finally a comment with some knowledge behind it. I love the part about the Mhz myth. So many PC users see the numbers (4Gb of RAM vs. 2 like grambo #117 posted) and compare to that. It's not about the number but how well the components work together.

The other number they see is price. Good timing for this discussion with the release of the new macbooks and new prices. As you mentioned Kibbe, by the time you get the upgrades of the "Smell" (love it) it'll cost way more.

Most of the comments I've seen here in favor of PC are as credible as the comments towards the dangers of Oly lifts. Let's put it in context people... Just because Elliptical's are still popular doesn't entail quality.

You don't have to choose anymore, given boot camp or parallels being available, as well as the use of the intel chipset in the new macs.

If I had to choose, here is the breakdown:

Mac for home "bulletproof" use, like for the kids to pound on, and the wifey to have trouble free reading of TMZ.com, PC for anything vaguely related to productivity.

Granted, PC's CAN BE less stable/secure/reliable, but that is a function of their complexity. Any complex system is going to have more "parts" to break. I will take that complexity and its inherent need for more careful use over a Mac any day.

Now, that being said, my dream machine is the Macbook pro with parallels installed, so's I can look at the pretty pictures in OSX, and run Visual Studio in XP pro on the same machine.

Macs are great for people easily convinced a product is good through colorful and flashy commercials. Also great for those that like to pay more for a "cooler" product that offers a lot less choice. Apple also makes some great products if you loved to be locked in and don't like competition in software products you can put on them. Come to think of it, Mac is kind of like Obama...communist.

Comment #187 - Posted by: Corey at October 15, 2008 7:58 AM

PC running Windows xp/vista or even Ubuntu for things that matter and real world effectiveness and to support capitalism and ingenuity.

Mac for video editing maybe playing games. They are also good for gandma who can't figure out her TV remote.

See no difference in usability within apps that matter like MMORPGs, Office apps etc...

Seems to be a personality thing. If you like things spoon fed to you, Mac is the lazy socialist dream come true.

If you like having a say in what goes into your computing experience and don't mind be an informed consumer PC is more for you.

For those that say PCs are less secure, think about this. If you are a malicious hacker type hell bent on doing the most collateral damage to the most people, are you going to waste time writing code for a platform that is scoffed at in business and only accounts for about 5% of the global PC market? Probably not.

Yes, its easier to write bulletproof drivers when you keep a straglehold on you hardware and don't allow competition on your platform. But the customers suffer when given no choice.
I'm not happy being another brick in the wall.
I wanna be a glass skyscraper.

Apple does make real purty media players and phones but again their proprietary formats drive me away everytime. I got an ipod and gave it up for a zen stone. It plays mp3s and wmas without wasting my time.

My religion is christianaty. I'd be a poor christian if I had room to worship anything else.

Personally I run FreeBSD when I can. I've been known to use NetBSD once in a while, but not in a while. Linux is interesting, but I prefer the FreeBSD attitude. I don't like the way Windows makes me work, but I can deal with it. I haven't needed to do something on a mac in years, but I can use them as well.

I do tell my non-computer friends to get a mac - because they just work so I don't have to be tech support as often.

MarcD,

First of all, this is not a topic I care all that much about. This is like discussing whether you should use a Casio or a Seiko watch. Really, I don't care all that much. I guess I just enjoy arguing or something :-) I tried to respond last night. But the board censored me because I posted too many URL's in my message. I don't think I'm misinformed at all. And thanks for the sweeping statement with only a single point (that was very weak) to back it up.

You may be running Mac OS on your PC. But we both know it is not only ILLEGAL (Violates EULA when you install Mac OS) to do so. But it is also not supported by Apple. At any time, Apple could release a an update that will break your compatibility. So I stand by my statement that you can't run Mac OS on a PC. You can't drive 100mph down the freeway. Sure, your car will go that fast, but you can't do it.

My claim that the macBook pro runs Vista faster than almost any other laptop on the market is substantiated by a simple google search of "MacBook pro runs vista fastest". The top hit is from "PC World". In 2007, they found the MacBook pro to run Vista the fastest "so far". What's funny about this is that Apple was not optimizing their hardware for Vista. It just worked out that way.

I said that Mac has less than 10% of the market share. Right now, they are sitting at just over 8% (world-wide). In the US, they are at around 14%. Do the research. If I post the links, I'll get censored :-(

I said that a lot of people don't like Steve Jobs. That is certainly not misinformed. Most people respect his savvy. But lots of people can't stand his "strangle-hold" over his own products.

As far as Vista Vs. Leopard. Did Leopard work perfectly, out of the box? Of course not. No OS does. Did it cause shockwaves of disdain among its users like Vista did? No. But it worked really well from day one. Vista, on the other hand, was a steaming pile on day one. "The Wow Starts Now"? Sure, if the next thing you say is "Wow, this OS kinda sucks". I've had to install XP on several machines for friends and family that had very bad experiences with Vista.

Bottom line is this. Macs, like crossfit, work across broad modal domains, out of the box. PC's, like Globo Gym, promise you the world and leave you with a blue screen of death more often than not. If you want to see a typical PC experience, do a google search for "Windows rg edition". Click on the top hit.

That's it for me. I'll wait for a more interesting topic to waste my employer's time while reading endless posts :-)

Mac.
I own them at home, and luckily work for a company which issues me one for work. I use my Mac as a salesman, where 99% of my colleagues use PC's. Its controversial at times, I get the occasional "wow your computer is so confusing." When I use a PC I literally feel like I am in a box, constrained, claustrophobic, etc etc.

I don't think anyone actually chooses to use a PC over a Mac, PC's are just the status quo, they are cheap, mass produced and readily available. Kind of like fast food, people are conditioned to just "not go against the grain." You have to go a bit out of your way to own and use a Mac, but it is more than worth it.

Comment #204 - Posted by: Jim G-ville at October 15, 2008 8:56 AM

I've used Macs, plenty of them. I always feel like I can't do enough with them, because Apple doesn't like allowing people free-reign to do whatever they want with the products they buy. Loved my iPod Nano, because I could put vPod on it and bypass iTunes, and I love my iPod Touch 2.0 because it's jailbroken and I don't have to pay for apps (how it should be). I love XP because I can tweak the hell out of it. But Linux takes the cake, because the assistance online is superb, I can customize it how I want, and it runs on PC machinery, which I can upgrade at will without completely voiding any warranty(s) I might have.

Linux tops all.

Mac 125
PC 5

No surprise here. Most Crossfitters are hardly "go with the crowd" people. We think for ourselves and are focussed on end results, not doing what every "muscle head" in the local "box gym" is pretending to do.

Open source is a concept in continued development. And although we as consumers like the idea of choosing between Mac and PC, the reality is when you reach a certain level of computer technology,

it is all the same thing... zero's and one's.

Kind of like the government. We are all fooled into thinking we are expressing ourselves by voting for one of two parties (2 perceived choices).

But, when you get to a certain level in politics they are all just the same...zero and one's. They are the "one's" and we-the masses are the controllable "zero's".

With continued development, "open source" and sharing on the internet it may all soon be moot.

We'll all be accessing the internet, everything with be on the internet and the computer we use will simply be an expression of our individuality.

Arguably, the same could be said for one world government or at least one world currency.

Crossfit already has and will just continue to compile more "evidence based training facts". The only defense for the uneducated and misinformed muscle heads will be to give baseless and emotional attacks on Crossfit. Sorry, but how much you can "bench" and how long you can drag your sorry a*s on a treadmill, does not hold a candle to a "Fran time" in functionality, translation into a measurement of true fitness and communicability.

Great video and effort!! To all you folks stating that this person or that could crush the time and go sub 5 or 4 minutes. Please consider Big O's CrossFit stats: 2:36 Fran and 30rd of Cindy, 535 DL and 305 Clean. That dudes got metcon and power, there may be guys who can beat the time but I don't know about crushing it. We'll have to see. Thankyou Alexandria for the challenge.

Mac

Both OS X and Windows XP are good operating systems. I prefer OS X but that is mostly cosmetic. If I were into maintaining my own system I'd go with some flavor of Linux. Since that's not what I'm into I go for the full-support of consumer hardware and consumer software.

The problem I have seen with PCs is that people often cheap-out on them and get crappy hardware. Apple provides tested, high quality hardware at a high price. You can get the same thing from decent PC manufacturers, most people just don't want to pay.

Comment #224 - Posted by: keithcelt at October 15, 2008 10:23 AM

Give me a PC. You can have your MAC to draw your cute little pictures or post photo's to your blog that no one reads.

Mac all the way.

Try and edit a video on a PC and then compare it to a Mac with Final Cut, and see who wins.

Photoshop.. Mac Owns it.

As far as office products, I have both Apple's iWork, and Microsoft Office 2007 for Mac. Both perform amazing.

I own a iMac 24", I have had it for about 6 months. I love it. I still have a PC which will soon be going on craigslist and sold to a poor poor soul who is still with the status quo.

Have been a PC user all my life, and got a MacBook Pro 3 weeks ago.

I like the Mac's user interface, but am still having trouble transitioning. Checking emails is easier using Outlook than Entourage. Many of my work applications don't work on Mac, so I have to use VMFusion. VPN doesn't work on Mac!

And the COST - my MacBook Pro is over three grand. Luckily my company paid for it :)

But my kids think I am cool now, so it pays for the aggravation of transitioning.

I was absolutely exhausted yesterday. Took it as a rest day with walking only and at that about fell asleep walking ;)

Today:

DL rep 3: 155-185-190-195 (PR)-200 (PR)
FS rep 5: 95-105- (115x7x3)- (115x8x2)- 110

Felt good. Could have gone even higher on DL. Was tiring out on FS and really hit max for today. My 1 rep ME for FS I believe is 145 so theoretically I am at 108 for rep of 5 which sounds about right. I am so close to 115 though… but that means theoretically I should have been able to get 209 for DL rep 3 with ME rep 1 at 225…

Found this quote by Charles Poliquin:

What do you think of that Crossfit stuff?

A: "I have no clue what the hell that is. Is that one of those systems that's a mish-mash of everything?"

"Wait, I saw on article on that in Muscle & Fatness. Looked like a bunch of cachexic fitness-model wannabes searching for their souls in the weight room."

"It reminds me of a Hungarian proverb: "If you only have one ass, you can't sit on two horses." If you try to do everything in your workout, you get nothing."

"Another way to look at it is to think of Tim Ferris's example of wearing your underwear over your pants. It's different, and maybe even fun for some people, but it's not very effective."

"No athlete has ever gotten good training like that."

Charles Poliquin is supposed to be a well respected strength coach from Canada. I was a bit surprised at his comment. Does anyonehere know him?

As many in the CF community probably do, I like to take stuff apart, make it better, and put it back together. (was doing dips on my homemade rings yesterday)
Therefore -PC for me.

Last week I went to frys' and baught a DVD writer for about $40 and a SATA cord for about $8 and in 20 minutes I had installed and was burning a DVD of 'Heroes' (the show not the WODs although that would be cool...)

I've installed a 2nd hard drive just for storing movies so I have about 800gig storage.

Can a MAC be torn appart and upgraded with no tech help and for under $100?

I got nothin against MAC's. I'm just sayin'...

(This fact has been proven by MANY PC publications)..."

If you price out "8 core, 32 gigs of ram, 4 terabytes of storage and a 2 gig SLI graphics in a Mac pro" on the Apple eStore it comes to over $23,000.00

I sure hope it would beat the $600 pc, otherwise I'd say you got f'ed.

I don't understand the fanboy mentality. I have both, but only prefer the 24" iMac when websurfing or viewing photos b/c of the big screen. I don't think the OS is really that special. I use the PC for gaming & development work. I say PC b/c I built my last CPU - spec'd out w/ all the best parts. I only have to upgrade the CPU & graphics card every 3-4 yrs & I'm getting 2-3 times the longevity and better performance for about the same price.

Funny thing is I wanted to get a cheap new laptop & was going to get a MacBook (new models out today), but there's no longer a firewire port on the new model. What are they thinking? Sorry, Mr. Jobs, I'm not going to spend over $2k on a MacBook Pro for a freaking port. PC's are half price. I was going to buy AAPL but I can't see it being an easy time for them in recession times.

Murph is beast. Michael P. Murphy was a stud.

Oh yeah PC > Mac. Windows has to run on any configuration. If you think about it, it's amazing that it works as well as it does. Mac's OS works fine because it only has to work on Mac's.

I built a Q66000, 8800 GTS gaming rig with Vista this year. Vista works great. I've got very few complaints with it.

I work with both Mac & PC everyday and after careful consideration of all the pros and cons...Paper & Pencil wins. Very portable, fits in your pcoket. Can play games, Tic-Tac-Toe, Hang-Man, etc. Great graphics (well, this really depends on ability). Minium impact on the earth (if recycled). I could just go on and on.

It's hard to say "Ok, you are right and I am wrong". But when someone makes an irrefutable point, you must, or risk becoming less of a man.

So I must say: "Ok, you are right and I am wrong". Mac and PC are both far inferior to paper and pencil.

While everyone disputes Mac vs PC, you have hit the nail on the head. Well done sir!!

I work in IT Support for a company with 15000 employees and 11000 PCs. Have worked with Windows since 3.1 and Mac OS since summer 1984. Typing this on my Dell laptop (purchased by my employer), but my own money is spent on the OS-unlimited machines from Apple.

That having been said, I agree that non-Apple HW is better for gamers and tinkerers, as well as those interested in the cheapest possible machines. Compare HW spec for spec and Apple is in most cases NOT more expensive, they just don't offer as wide a range of products.

King Kong... you ain't kidding! I'd have to use his squat clean bar for my deadlifts and do the squat cleans with 155 to come even close.

Slow Cookers:

Students on a Budget who want to Zone: research getting a slow cooker.

I recently bought a 6-quart slow cooker and have made a few recipes from my Zone cookbook and others that I have downloaded off the net. Results are good to excellent.

Recently, a student was asking about a cheap way to zone, and I think using a slow cooker is the way. You can get a smaller one, like a 4-quart and make several reheatable meals. I just made a zone friendly 3-bean chili and it turned out pretty good and I have done a couple of roasts. I double the recipes in my cooker and have lots of leftovers that I freeze into single servings (Using the cheap plastic Ziplock resealable containers. If I lose one, who cares, and they are reusable).

The slow cookers can be safely cooking on low while you are in class or working. I have a programmable one that I put on in the am when I go off to work and after it finishes cooking, it turns to "warm" setting.

Do some research and google for zone friendly slow cooker recipes and you may find it suits your lifestyle and budget.

If anyone has any tips or links to great recipes, hope to see them on Rest Day.

Cheers, RD

I'm a power user...went to Mac for a while, couldn't do anything fun (no modding, little hacking, no custom hardware or firmware upgrades/add-ons), plus my iMac froze/crashed about 90% more than my Vista and XP boxes.

Anthony (M/29/168)

"King Kong"
3 rounds of:
1 Deadlift 455 pounds
2 Muslceups
3 Squat Cleans 250 pounds
4 Handstand Pushups

Time: 6:50

This was interesting. The deadlift, mu, and hspu are pretty easy for me. But my max clean is actually 255, so nine reps at 250 was intimidating to say the least. I actually failed my first two attempts and wasted about a minute trying to recover (mentally and physically). Once I found my groove I was fine - barely broke a sweat.

I'm pretty sure if I had a do-over when I was fresh (today was supposed to be a rest day) I'd chop this down to the 5 minute range. I do have it on video, but it's from a phone and quality is very poor.

I expect the firebreathers to tear this one apart.

Question for CrossFit as rehab.
My friend is recovering from a brain tumor and the subsequent treatment. He is been in remission about a year and wants to start getting active again. He's lost a lot of muscle and due to the chemo has lost a good deal of mobility in one leg.
We were talking tonight about activities he can do. I get the feeling he has been introduced to exercises for the "disabled" and doesn't want to feel like that label applies to him. So, especially after seeing Mr. Maynard, I think that CF could work for him.
I have been Cfing for about a year (with great results), but I don't have the knowledge to coach him. Can anyone point me in a good direction? We live in the Philadelphia (PA) area.

Thanks everyone.

p.s. Mac, all the way, I have been a true Apple user since my Apple IIc.

Comment #275 - Posted by: Michael at October 15, 2008 5:21 PM

That depends on whether you're talking about the hardware or the operating system. In the hardware arena, PC is open, mac is closed. PC also happens to be better in general...hence the reason that MacOS now runs on PCs. If you're talking about the operating system, then the question is MacOS vs Windows. In that case, I think it's pretty clear that MacOS is better. Although the question totally ignores other good operating systems such as Linux (my personal favorite, and free btw). There's a pattern here. Open hardware architectures, open-source operating systems, and of course open-source fitness. :)

CHECK THIS OUT!!

At a computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated: "If GM had kept up with the technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release (by Mr. Welch himself) stating:

If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

1. For no reason at all, your car would crash twice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines on the road, you would have to buy a new car.

3. Occasionally, executing a manoeuver such as a left-turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, and you would have to reinstall the engine.

4. When your car died on the freeway for no reason, you would just accept this, restart and drive on.

5. Only one person at a time could use the car, unless you bought 'Car95' or 'CarNT', and then added more seats.

6. Apple would make a car powered by the sun, reliable, five times as fast, and twice as easy to drive, but would run on only five per cent of the roads.

7. Oil, water temperature and alternator warning lights would be replaced by a single 'general car default' warning light.

8. New seats would force every-one to have the same size butt.

9. The airbag would say 'Are you sure?' before going off.

10. Occasionally, for no reason, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key, and grabbed the radio antenna.

11. GM would require all car buyers to also purchase a deluxe set of road maps from Rand-McNally (a subsidiary of GM), even though they neither need them nor want them. Trying to delete this option would immediately cause the car's performance to diminish by 50 per cent or more. Moreover, GM would become a target for investigation by the Justice Department.

12. Every time GM introduced a new model, car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

13. You would press the 'start' button to shut off the engine.

As for mac or pc, I own a dell that has lasted since 05 with few problems and I own an iPhone. Like both and don't think it really matters. Use whatever floats ur boat

"really - can you post the wod before 1030pm-ish eastern time? I'm sure i'm not the only one who lives on the east coast, works out in the morning, and goes to work..."

REALLY! Why don't you just call Coach directly and ask for the WOD in advance?

Seriously, just make up a WOD if you're wanting to get to bed.

Goodnight!

I'd make a negative comment about the weight belt, but I don't see me trying King Kong anytime soon.

Outstanding effort!

MAc or PC?

I personally hate this discussion. Slow news day eh? I would think that most CrossFitters would use whichever tool works best for them, whether it be a Mac, a windows based PC, Linux/Unix, or stylus and wax tablet (my personal favorite).

Personally, I prefer the DEC VAX. Seriously. I got a bit of work done on one when at UC. The shortcuts were pretty easy after a while. And while I'm typing this on a Mac, I could just as easily be using a PC Running DOS 6.0. Why?

I was probably more productive running a CLI. Well, I feel I got more actual work done. Also, there were less infotainment distractions like YouTube to annoy me. The commenter that suggested "pencil and paper" hit the nail on the head.

One thing that all modern computers lack is a decent keyboard. I still have My IBM "clicky" with the mechanical keyswitches. It is miles better than any keyboard bundled with any computer nowadays.

Comment #110, saulj: Shimano or Campy? For road, Shimano, tho Campy has really improved since the late 80's. I think the Dura-Ace gruppo is pretty solid.

But as I don't ride road anymore, the more appropriate argument is:

Shimano or SRAM?
Fox or Marzocchi?
26" or 29er?
Geared or SS?

;-)

I understand the question to be McCain or Political Correctness.

Actually, I understand the subtext to be latent despair about the ratiocinative and perceptual capacity of Americans. What is the point in trying to have substantive discussions when the mass bulk of our nation has turned into Obama-bots? I have been accused in the last week by a friend of racism by pointing to the fact that Obama is manifestly, documentably, either a liar or an idiot, in that he can't possibly come close to keeping all of his promises.

If you look at his website, the only sacrifice he asks anyone anywhere to make is that he will raise taxes some 2% of the top 2% of Americans. He will increase our expenditures a minimum of $400 billion--with the actual total likely much higher than that--and he states, in his usual clear, measured, quietly passionate prose, that he will balance the budget, since this is a necessity.

I am reminded of the movie "Matchstick Men", where Nicholas Cage and his Sam Rockwell con a couple over the phone, then show up a couple months later pretending to be FBI agents, get all their credit card numbers "to conduct an investigation", or something like that, then steal their money again.

All the people who borrowed money they couldn't afford to pay back feel cheated. They are going to rectify things by electing someone who will cheat them again. Debt is bad. Debt after you've lost your job because the economy tanked after a generous application of leftism is quite another.

I read Saul Alinsky's book "Rules for Radicals". Obama's playbook is straight out of it. He has ALWAYS credited the teachings of Alinsky for his success.

First off, Alinsky realized that notoriety is actually a good thing. He actually brags about how the community reaction in Rochester, New York to his coming there--one filled with charges of moral corruption, Marxism, and a desire to shatter common sense social order--actually helped him. In his view, the alienated "have not" figured that if the Establishment hated him so much, he must have something going for him.

We see this in Obama. Once you have made that conversion, to seeing lights in the sky when he speaks, literally nothing anyone says is going to cause you to think anything other than that person is crazy or a racist. Likely both.

Secondly, you have to understand him as a gangster. Alinsky literally associated with the Chicago underworld as a sociologist, and took the basic principles of extortion to the execution of his self admitted Marxist beliefs.

Part of this process is portraying your enemies as evil, and yourself as saintly, all the while practicing the most Machiavellian tricks imaginable.

Obama doesn't need to go negative for the simple reason that leftists have been rewriting history literally while it happened for the last eight years. All he has to do is point to Bush, then link McCain to him. Leftists also triumphed in the truth war about Vietnam, and have made significant gains in eradicating our common culture in favor of one based on universal tolerance, recycling, and organic farming.

Finally, I wanted to point out that Alinsky is very practical and clear in his demand that would be organizers use the language and manners of those they wanted to organize, which is codespeak for "manipulate to form a mass capable of extorting concessions from the enemy of the moment".

"[The organizer] learns the local legends, anecdotes, values, idioms. He listens to small talk. He refrains from rhetoric foreign to the local culture; he knows that worn out words like "white racist", "fascist pig", and "mother@#$%^" have been so spewed about that using them is now within the negative experience of the local people, seving only to identify the speaker as "one of those nuts" and to turn off any further communication."

Mike Kruglik, who called himself Alinsky's "St. Paul" (note the latent evangelic attachment) said Obama was the best student he ever had. Given this, we can expect he would never be dumb enough to use language that reflects his true radicalism.

Please note, though, that Alinksy is fully sympathetic to the use of those words. That's where he lived, and that's where Obama, too, appears to live. None of us would have chosen Bill Ayers to host our coming out party.

On that note, as well, it's worth noting the Annenburg Foundation was dedicated to community organizing along Alinsky's principles. Logically, if you get the kids riled up young enough, you can do what you want.

You have only to look back 70 years to see the power of what you can accomplish "if you get them young enough."

I think the goose is cooked. Maybe I'm wrong, but the communication path from conservatives to the Middle is blocked, clogged with the hopes and fears Obama has successfully accessed with his skilled and disingenuous rhetoric.

What remains is to use his own tactics against him. More on that in another post, or elsewhere.

ABBOTT AND COSTELLO BUY A COMPUTER

You have to be old enough to remember Abbott and Costello, and too
old to REALLY understand computers, to fully appreciate this.

For those of us who sometimes get flustered by our computers, please
read on...

If Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were alive today, their infamous
sketch, "Who's on First?" might have turned out something like this:

COSTELLO CALLS TO BUY A COMPUTER FROM ABBOTT

ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?
COSTELLO: Thanks. I'm setting up an office in my den and I'm
thinking about buying a computer.
ABBOTT: Mac?
COSTELLO: No, the name's Lou.
ABBOTT: Your computer?
COSTELLO: I don't own a computer. I want to buy one.
ABBOTT: Mac?
COSTELLO: I told you, my name's Lou.
ABBOTT: What about Windows?
COSTELLO: Why? Will it get stuffy in he re?
ABBOTT: Do you want a computer with Windows?
COSTELLO: I don't know. What will I see when I look at the windows?
ABBOTT: Wallpaper.
COSTELLO: Never mind the windows. I need a computer and software.
ABBOTT: Software for Windows?
COSTELLO: No. On the computer! I need something I can use to write
proposals and track expenses and run my business. What do you have?
ABBOTT: Office.
COSTELLO: Yeah, for my office. Can you recommend anything?
ABBOTT: I just did.
COSTELLO: You just did what?
ABBOTT: Recommend something.
COSTELLO: You recommended something?
ABBOTT: Yes.
COSTELLO: For my office?
ABBOTT: Yes.
COSTELLO: OK, what did you recommend for my office?
ABBOTT: Office.
COSTELLO: Yes, for my office!
ABBOTT: I recommend Office with Windows.
COSTELLO: I already have an office with windows! OK, let's just say
I'm sitting at my computer and I want to type a proposal. What do I
need?
ABBOTT: Word.
COSTELLO: What word?
ABBOTT: Word in Office.
COSTELLO: The only word in office is office.
ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.
COSTELLO: Which word in office for windows?
ABBOTT: The Word you get when you click the blue "W".
COSTELLO: I'm going to click your blue "w" if you don't start with
some straight answers. What about financial bookkeeping? You have
anything I can track my money with?
ABBOTT: Money.
COSTELLO: That's right. What do you have?
ABBOTT: Money.
COSTELLO: I need money to track my money?
ABBOTT: It comes bundled with your computer.
COSTELLO: What's bundled with my computer?
ABBOTT: Money.
COSTELLO: Money comes with my computer?
ABBOTT: Yes. No extra charge.
COSTELLO: I get a bundle of money with my computer? How much?
ABBOTT: One copy.
COSTELLO: Isn't it illegal to copy money?
ABBOTT: Microsoft gave us a license to copy Money.
COSTELLO: They can give you a license to copy money?
ABBOTT: Why not? THEY OWN IT!

(A few days later)

ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?
COSTELLO: How do I turn my computer off?
ABBOTT: Click on "START".............

I have an iMac
If/when I get around to a laptop, it's going to be one of sweet aluminum macbooks, however, I think I might go with a open source (some form of linux like Ubuntu) on a 'net-book', which has the power a decent laptop had a few years ago for only two or three hundred bucks.

My MAC crashed. Seriously. It was acting just fine, then one morning, it froze, and now it won't boot up past the "DOS" screen, keeps bitching about an invalid argument. I didn't think Macs crashed? Or at least gave proper warning?

So I'm stuck with my work PC. But I loved my Mac.

I haven't tried snatches yet but i am getting stronger and closer. Today I did 5 rounds pull-ups, dips, overhead squat. Used 55lb on the over head squats and did a minimum of 10 each round. 12-15 average i guess. Once i can put some weight on the overhead squats i will start with snatches

Have a Ubuntu CD sitting here but thought about ALL the software I'd need to replace and the new monitor I would need to get because there aren't drivers for my Samsung 214T.

Ok this is a little late but, in the ton of the Zen remark (minus using the word "stupid") I say linux.

I would hazard to guess that most people use there computers to email, browse the web and process words. I certainly do. I appreciate Linux because while I can certain run in on a super powerful machine and serve video, play games and crunch big numbers I can also install in on just about any box I might find at goodwill or find on the side of the road.

What's great is that it is my choice.

Free, effective and scalable: sound familiar?
