Sounds like a good one; wish I wasn't sick :-(
Another new hero wod....
RIP. I'll hit this one hard Friday.
So sad to see another Hero workout. Our thoughts and prayers are with Erin Doyle and his family. I will again give it my all.
One new Hero WOD is bad enough. Thought and prayers to Erin's family. I will do this one in your honor.
I'll be doin this one tomorrow. Looks like it's gonna be one of those weeks. RIP.
Question
I saw the demo, he was alternating legs, so is it 30 reps total 15 each leg or just 15 reps alternate if you want
I do not know whether to be sad or happy to see another hero workout. While it is sad to think of another brave man sacrificing himself for the good of others, that so many good men still exist in the world today cannot but bring a smile to my face and hope to my heart.
RIP Erin, and thank you to all the heroes out there, living and dead, whose dedication, sacrifice and perseverance can never be fully repaid by the grateful (and not so grateful) people of the world.
RIP Erin.
Looks like a great.
Same as question from #8? 30 total ( 1 each side) or 15 total..
Another day, another hero workout.
I can only say that although I hate to see these come up, because I know that is another brave soul lost. I do take comfort in the fact that these hero workouts help spread the awareness and let people research a story or two of these heroes that they would otherwise never know about.
God bless you Erin.
IS it 40lb. Dumbells each arm? and same as #8
#8 and #10
I'm assuming each clean counts for one rep, regardless of which leg is forward
Just to answer the questions that have come up and clear things up.
40lb dumbbell in each arm.
15 total split cleans. (You can do them all with the same leg in front, alternating, or what ever.)
#8
It says "40 pound Dumbells" ... which makes it seem as though we will have a 40 in each hand. I agree with #14 - one rep is one rep, regardless of leg. I will however be alternating like the guy in the video.
My condolences to his family. He looks like he would have been a fun guy to know.
Here's hoping we don't see any more hero workouts any time soon.
Sometimes I think stuff like wow, my hands are going to be dog meat from all these pullups.
Then I think about the hardship that our Heroes and their families endure. And I think about those who can not "do" what we do.
Its a sobering reminder to enjoy every minute every inch of this life.
posting from yesterdays wod, which I just finished.
Ryan in 32:39 (weak, I know, but those burpees)
imagine my surprise to see another hero WOD ready for my completely drained body!
Two WOD's in a row. RIP you Erin and Ryan.
RIP Erin. My heart goes out to Nicole and Zarine.
He seemed to love his job, for that I am glad he could do it until the end.
My heart tightens with each new hero WOD.
I felt too sick last night to do Ryan justice so I suppose I will be doing both of these today.
Dang coach, two new hero WOD's in a row, that's tough. My prayers are with the Doyle family.
Hero's.
You will be missed.
Aloha,
Jordan
RIP ERIN. God bless him and his family. Nice workout, probably sub thrusters for cleans and maybe some jumping pullups
In your honor, Erin. R.I.P.

Well said, Troy, and a good point to hold on to when in the middle of the Erin tomorrow.
Erin, fair winds, following seas on the journey. Paul
Another hero.... R.I.P guys
Tonight when I did Ryan hero-wod, I quit in the middle. No really, after round 3, I just quit. I got a pr of the 1st 5 muscleups consecutive, then all the fire-power in my muscles was gone and it took like 6 failed attempts for every 1 successful. Weird to say the burpees were cake in comparison.
Then my trainer partner "Tommy-Gun" made me come over to the computer and watch a video about Ryan. Ripped my heart out... he was 22.
All he said afterwards was "this is why we're doing this workout remember?... now you have to do it"
And so I did.
I've done 30-mups rx'd in 14mins -- but this Ryan took an epic 50:05mins, which is kinda embarassing to admit -- but I didn't quit. As a trainer sometimes the pressure is on to KILL every wod and well,... I guess we all have an off day. I will take my own advice and let it roll, move on.
I fully plan on doing Erin hero-wod tomorrow with a new resolve, because we are lucky that there's an elusive "more" to the why we do this.
My prayers for both the families.
Nicole, we honor your husbands service. You now have 500 corssfitters thinking and praying for you and your family.
As a Canadian, this Hero WOD will be extra special.
Thank you Erin and all the other Heros and brave men and women that fight for our freedom.
RIP.
Sad to see another hero workout. I'm a fellow Canadian and CF member. Will be hitting this one hard for your honor.
RIP Erin...
The new hero workouts lately got me excited and sad at the same time...
God speed Master Corporal. I hope the bastards died miserably and pray your passing was swift.
Your rest is well deserved and all of us are fortunate for having men and women like you who choose to serve.

Erin looks like someone who would be a kick-ass drinking buddy AND the person you want standing behind you when a fight is going down.
Condolences to Erin's friends and family.
Our prayers are out to your family Erin!
I'm glad that I had the pleasure to meet Erin and drink with him. I could think of few people that I would want by my side when St. Peter came a calling. The Canadian Infantry lost a great warrior. God Bless the family he left behind.
Salute to our Canadian friends. While we may not always see eye to eye, you couldnt ask for better neighbors.
It always saddens me to see another hero added to the ranks.
Godspeed, Erin.
Love the hero of the day workouts, just hate that we have to have them in the first place. My prayers are with both families and loved ones.
RIP Erin
Another day, another hero WOD. Not fair that we keep losing heroes, but we will again do this WOD in your honor.
Zone question!
why do i not hear about Zoning from other sources of fitness such as pro athletes, pro trainers, Olympians etc??? If it is as effective as claimed here, would not there be talk of it from other sources??? I never hear it mentioned anywhere else.
...please enlighten me!
to those asking
40lb. dumbbells means 40lbs. in each hand. 15 reps means 15 reps regardless of which foot forward on the split clean (i.e. not 30 reps).
so adrian had a jacket on in the beginning of the video and then no jacket later. hmm...some kinda wacky crossfit camera trick there.
Ryan kicked my butt in this altitude / dryness.
Erin, we Canadians will do this one for you in Kandahar City tomorrow.
oh yeah did nate tonight.

i'm on my amry computer and can't access the links for the video demonstration. can some one briefly explain the movement to me?
i'm assuming it is normal clean stance how ever when you power through the clean movement instead of catching in a front squat you catch in a split lunge with weights caught at each shoulder.
is this correct?

Rob,
You are correct. Normal clean stance form the ground, catch in split lunge with dumbells at each shoulder.
To the question on the Zone diet. You can actually go on Dr. Sears zone diet webpage and see many athletes including Olympians who are on the zone.
Thanks to Rob G. for the kind words about us Canadian neighbors. Much respect to the fallen hero's family. Your sacrifice is not in vain. God make His face shine on you. He understands what it is to sacrifice as son. There is nothing more divine or God-like in my opinion than to sacrifice for others freedoms. I stand in awe.
had to sub 35# dbs since that's all i have at home.

You are correct with your understanding of the movement.

Question on Subs for Rowing:-
One of the subs listed for rowing (oh, for a cheap rower...) is to do
sumo deadlift highpulls. although i definitely feel the push on core and legs like a rower machine, i feel the highpull doesn't really work the back muscles the way a rower does.
for that matter... which part of the upper body
does the SDHP actually work out? i feel strain on certain parts like elbows, hands and shoulder joints, but not an actual 'pump' otherwise...
Michelle, I completely agree with you and I hope everybody else follows your advice.
thankyou #55, #57. much appreciated!
RIP, Erin
I look forward to the day when the roster of hero workouts is complete.
RIP Doyle, you'll always be remembered.
Hey Guys,
Technically, which leg are you supposed to bring back first: back leg or front leg? On the video demonstration, the guy is alternating so there is no way to know but I think it is back leg first, right??
Thanks much and have a great one!

I mourn for the families.
This hero workout hits close to home as it is a Canadian Solider. Working in medical transport I have gotten to know quite a few of these guys. Looking forward to hitting this hard tomorrow.
Mimms got $300k? Good lord. That's going to piss quite a few people off I should think.
#69 Ryan- I can't believe they actually held that trainer and gym liable! The guy didn't have to do the workouts if he didn't want to! He should have to pay some sort of extra pussy penalty. Don't bring that weak sh*t to the playground if you want to roll with the big kids.
As Coach said "If you find the notion of falling off the rings and breaking your neck so foreign to you, then we don't want you in our ranks."
(If he didn't actually say that I apologize but I saw that quoted somewhere and I thought it was pretty tight)
Are there any video for Dumbbells split clean?

I just read that article! Wow! It is truely amazing what people will do to get money. That gym should have never been held responsible. I guess if you have the right lawyer, you can sue anyone for anything.
That is a great photo!
RIP Erin, your spirit lives on!
Looking forward to adding this wod to the board.

I hope tomorrow won't bring any Pullups since my right hand got destroyed today. It's pretty much skinless from two Pullup-featuring Hero WOD's in a row.
Any tips on dealing with calluoses?
I'm sanding them once a week, but every three-five weeks or so they tear anyway.
Hoping this isn't an obvious question - how much like a clean is that actually? Is there supposed to be significant hip extension? It looks like a fast squat to a lunge rather than a variant of a clean - is that what we're supposed to be going for? Thanks for any help...
For anybody in the Virginia Beach area, NAS Oceana is hosting a pull-up competition all day today. You just stop by when you can and have a staff member spot you. I'm a pansy and a relative newbie, but if any gung-ho crossfitters are in the area, do me a favor and put xfit on the boards at Oceana.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Erin's family and friends. Deepest sympathies.

Great picture, looks like a guy I would really get along with. I actually nearly puked during yesterday's WOD, doesn't happen often, I think it was the burpees. I got a date with Erin after work.

Being new to crossfit I really have not got the kipping pullup at all, so I am doing dead hang pullups, however that often means that when there is higher than 10-12 pullups I am having to do jumping pullups or negatives!is this the right thing to do??

I have been doing crossfit for a little over 3 years now and have always appreciated the "hero" workouts. This is the first one that hits close to home.
Knew Erin, not well, but knew him. I was one of his football coaches when he was in high school.
Thanks crossfit for naming a workout for him.

We don't have dumbbells at our affiliate, and I was off balance with the 1 pood kettlebells when trying to split clean. I used a barbell loaded to 85 lbs.

My condolences go out to Erin's family.

technically you would want to push back off your front foot after the split. dumbbells aren't heavy enough for it to really matter though. if you had a 1rm overhead its more stable to push back off the front foot.
#86 Dan
wow! you even looked it up and everything. that might just win the prize for dumbest comment ever.
RIP Erin.
Has anyone been keeping up and compilling all the new heroe workouts?

Thank you Coach for memorializing Erin today.
Melvin, as I knew him, was a CrossFit trainer and took his level 2 coaching in Vancouver over a year ago when I met him. He was truly an engaging person, a soldier from Edmonton.
Thank you Erin, for your commitment to the Canadian Forces. I'll never forget you.
Another thanks to another great soldier.....thank you Erin.
Has anyone else had to do as many pull ups as me....I ahve yet to be able to do a muscle up....guess I have not tried because no access to rings......
Subbing the muscle ups with 4 pulls ups and dips means in the last 4 days I have done 345 pull ups including this workout.....hands hurt and back and arms are SHOT....
I have asked a few times now with no response.....how many people also do crossfit endurance?
IF YOU WANT SOME.........GET SOME!!!!!!!
I awaken this morning with time on my hands, annoyed at the news of the lawsuit, and I am greeted chez CF with "Erin".
Nothing like two back-to-back hero WOD's to put things in perspective.
Coach and Lauren post these WOD's, I think, for three reasons. In order to complete these epic work-outs we must dig deeper, go to a place that is harder, and do so voluntarily, on purpose. Kath#30 gets it right--thank you for that post. Doing a Hero WOD makes us remember that these men were volunteers who CHOSE to put themselves in harm's way. We honor their memory by choosing to complete the WOD as best we can.
The Hero WOD's also should prompt some reflection on the concept of sacrifice and community. Even the most ardent Libertarians among us realize that there is a common good, something to which we all can and should contribute. There is a gratitude that each one of us should have for these people who serve to protect us. All jobs and all work has virtue; it has always seemed to me that those jobs that put one at risk (military, LEO, Firefighters) come with just a little more.
Lastly, each Hero WOD is an opportunity to remember the LIVING heroes among us, those who walk among us daily and those who walk in places far afield. Remembering and thanking the departed is a worthwhile endeavor to be sure. But the posting of a new Hero WOD is an invitation to thank these people while they are ALIVE. It is an invitation to do something concrete on their behalf or in their honor while they live.
It doesn't have to be big. When's the last time you waved to a cop driving through your neighborhood? Did you hang up when the recruiter called your home rather than engaging? Have you brought your toddler to the fire station to gaze in awe at the ladder truck and pretend to slide down the pole? There always seemed to be rather big smiles on the faces of rough men when we made those visits with a younger clan Bingo.
So today I will visit the gym and give my best doing "Erin". I don't have a MU, but I'll honor "Ryan" by doing some burpees, too. I'll give a shout out to my boys Dale, Paul, Bob, Andy, Eddie, Dave, John B, a howdy to Fire Captain Jack and gaucoin, and a wave to Darren and Paul here at home and Freddy C. et al. as they drive through the neighborhoods.
Thank you.

Thank you for posting that article. I hadn't heard that... though it seems that many others had as I see some other comments on it. Here are my thoughts:
I found it oddly appealing that our workout is able to seriously injure someone. Much like finding joy in watching the misery of others, I kinda smiled to myself when I read that article - while admitting that it's terrible that the gym was found liable and the serviceman is seriously injured. In my opinion, Mimms was in pretty good shape and got injured by some freak accident and attempted to hold someone liable for what is a random injury. If that is the case, then I'm glad he has had some serious damage. He suffered a freak injury while working with a certified (hopefully) CrossFit trainer - that trainer was doing his best to push Mimms to be his most elite version of fit. The trainer shouldn't be at fault for a random accident that occurred from an intense workout that Mimms explicitly asked for.
My prayers to the Doyle family.

I did Ryan today. I guess you could say I "subbed" the MUs for just trying to build some pullup muscles. I was in a little random elevator room that has a treadmill and a speed bag (haven't figured it out yet) but I had pleanty of room to do burpees and a good system of pipes overhead to attempt my pullups with. I started off with the Waste Drain pipe because it was small enough for a decent grip, but luckily I found a freshwater pipe of the same size in a different part of the room. I was a little worried about my weight breaking the waste drain and it pouring in my face... not a realistic fear, but still scary. OH, and I didn't time myself. I had to dig deep though to finish, I completely underestimated burpees. They remind me of boot camp (we do a thing called 8 counts, evil buggers, especially when the division commander decides to see how fast he can count). I pulled through with Ryan in my mind. My only regret is that I could not bust out one pull up for him, it almost brought tears to my eyes, I was trying so hard.
RIP Erin. Thoughts will be with your family. Thank you for serving.

Thanks, Bingo, for saying things a lot of us are thinking, and saying them well.
I came across this article which might be of interest for those of us who may not know much about this man. Sounds like he was well-loved by everyone around him.
LEGAL, Alta. - A standing-room-only crowd paid its last respects Thursday to an Edmonton-based soldier killed in Afghanistan - on the same day the deaths of three Canadian combat engineers were announced.
More than 500 mourners streamed into the St. Emile Church under grey skies in Legal, a town of 1,300 people about 50 kilometres north of Edmonton, for the funeral of Master Cpl. Erin Doyle of Kamloops, B.C.
Doyle, 32, was killed during an attack by insurgents against a Canadian combat outpost in the Panjwaii district on Aug. 11.
He served with the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, and was on his third tour of Afghanistan.
"He's one of those figures you don't miss - with the big red beard and the bald head," said Eric Radfield, a Legal resident.
"You may not have known what his name was, but you sure knew who he was."
Doyle leaves behind his wife, Nicole, and daughter Zarine.
Following the service, a solemn procession made its way to a nearby cemetery for the burial service. They were watched by a handful of residents who stood along the town's main street, its businesses adorned with baskets of brightly coloured flowers.
"This brings it home. There's really nothing, nothing open in town. Everybody's here - as it should be," Radfield added.
The deaths of Doyle and of the three combat engineers brings to 93 the number of Canadian soldiers who have died in Afghanistan since 2002.

Might have been my worst pull-up performance since I started CF in August. I made it through three and a half rounds as rx'd in about 9:30. My hands and grip then completely failed. I got 7 pull-ups in round 4 and then just could no longer even hold myself from the pull-up bar. After trying for about five unbelievably frustrating minutes to get even one, I moved over and did underhand lat-pull downs for the last two rounds. Now looking at some posts, I guess I could have tried jumping pull-ups, but I don't know if I could even have held at that.

Still struggling with the lean vs. adequate fuel issue. I've have been quite stable and content at 17 blocks for 2.5 years but can't quite dial in the appropriate fat multiplier. I can't help but wonder if my recent WOD performances haven't been held back by insufficient fuel.

I had to laugh at Erin's picture, though. It shows the true mark of a man who can take a bad situation and still have fun and find some in humor in it all. A lesson to be learned by all of us as we go through life.
Godspeed, Erin.
I'm curious why "Crossfit" requires pullups so frequently. Does anyone know the reasons/justifications for doing pull ups so frequently. I had did the sub for muscle ups yesterday, and I am dreading having to do 5 rounds of pullups today.

I'm the first to decry our letigious society and the lack of personal responsibility, but even though that looks pretty tame, Mimms was a noob. From the court documents:
--- (Image I could use blockquote tags)
This was the first time training under the direction of Mr. Lopez and using CrossFit exercises. Before the training session, Mr. Mimms informed Mr. Lopez that he had not resistance-exercised his legs prior to December 11th. Thus, Mr. Mimms would be considered a novice for these types of exercise. Mr. Mimms was not informed of the potential for CrossFit exercise to result in rhabdomyolysis.
---
You don't have to read very far on the Crossfit "getting started" page before you come across
---
In any case it must be understood that the CrossFit workouts are extremely demanding and will tax the capacities of even the world's best athletes. You would be well advised to take on the WOD carefully, cautiously, and work first towards completing the workouts comfortably and consistently before "throwing" yourself at them 100%. The best results have come for those who've "gone through the motions" of the WOD by reducing recommended loads, reps, and sets while not endeavoring towards impressive times for a month before turning up the heat. We counsel you to establish consistency with the WOD before maximizing intensity.
---
What was Mr. Lopez thinking?

Even with just 85#, the form on my cleans, as far as the DROP underneath the bar goes, felt better than any cleans I'd ever done. Something just clicked in my brain, and suddenly I was dropping under correctly. As far as the rest of the form goes... well... let's just say it still needs work.

Got to the gym at just the wrong time, and no platforms were available, which meant no rings. Also pressed on time, and ended up not warming up for the first time in recent memory. Ended up having to do PUs on one of those damned soft-wrapped parallel PU bars. Didn't have any experience with the "split" before, and after a few attempts prior to the WOD, I decided to do regular db cleans this time, otherwise as RX'd.
19:52
Not with it today. At beginning of 3rd round, tore one callous and "grew" two blood blisters thanks to the lovely soft wrapping plus sweat. Slowed way down after that. Response to the article about crossfit taking lives etc. The main "disease" caused by hardcore training is mostly associated with dehydration. Hydration is very key to intense work outs, if you stop sweating your in trouble.
That being said the website talks quite a bit about scalability of the work out (normally in reference to older people, or people starting out) perhaps the trainer did not scale it down enough for this guy's fitness level, and he just kept pushing because he had the drive too.
However I do say that trusting someone else with your health is risky. Though it seems in this situation that's what was being purchased....

Wow, this WOD was incredibly taxing on the forearms. Even though I had enough cardio and body strength to complete all of the reps, my hands couldn't hold onto the pullup bar anymore. It's really upsetting that my grip strength is holding me back. A friend of mine, however, has given me some "grippers" to use while I'm driving/watching tv. Hopefully they will help build up my grip.

#30 Kath, thanks for sharing that story... I did Nate yesterday and in the end didn't feel I gave it my all but I shrugged it off, telling myself, "Some days are just going to be crap." Reading what you wrote reminds me that the WODs - especially the hero WODs - are not the place to half-ass it, even if you feel like crap. That's the time to leave the negative energy at the door and focus 100% on honoring the workout. Today was my off day, but tomorrow I'll do Erin and give it 110% (hell why not 200%? ;). Okay, so, I wasn't sure what "Rx" women's weight would be. 70% would be 28# dumbbells, which we of course don't have. 30# dumbbells makes the girl weight 75% of the men's weight. Thank you for standing with us, thank you for bleeding with us, thank you for taking care of our wounded, and above all thank you for giving us your hero's.
RIP Erin -
#470 Adam,
I know exactly how you feel. My buddy works out with me occasionally. And every time I pause to catch my breath, he says "Cmon, go before you're ready". Now I'm in the habit of consciously starting again long before I feel like I'm ready. Basically, if there is a moment that you feel comfortable during a high intensity WOD, you're doing it wrong :-)
Hope that helps.

2 rounds, pullups on swing bar; 2 rounds + 14 of last round on fixed pullup bar; ripped my hands on number 14 and forearms simply could not hold on any more (about 12 failed attempts), so the last 7 were jumping pullups.
Once again, my forearms were the limiting factor. I actually dropped the dbs once because my forearms just gave out! Frustrating!
