Comment #15 - Posted by: RV-KY at October 4, 2008 7:32 PM

Man that's one of the best videos I've seen in ages; what the heck is Barber doing? It looks like he's trying to put in a contact lens from the floor with no hands. And someone seriously get Boz some shoes; doubles with no shoes is loco.

Freddy, keep the hands lower on the doubles!

Barbara kicks my butt, body weight much higher than the 135 for this WOD
Hands hurt and I am fried so maybe 3 rounds then cross fit endurance swim but I will do this at 155

Comment #23 - Posted by: Karin at October 4, 2008 8:55 PM

It's all five rounds straight through correct?

Comment #24 - Posted by: KP at October 4, 2008 9:02 PM

Were those double-unders Freddy C was doing ? Looked like he was trying to clear a fence.

Comment #25 - Posted by: sevan at October 4, 2008 9:12 PM

Dutch is a beast.

This WOD is fun - let's get some.

Comment #26 - Posted by: Alex m/28/6'3'/166# at October 4, 2008 9:22 PM

Its good to see that Freddie's Double unders look like mine, very nice. I have been told that I jump high enough on my double unders to get up onto a 20" box. I look like I just got off the short bus and its recess when I do double unders.

Joline, super solid stuff, your double unders looked fantastic.

The rest of the guys in the video all come from a heavy gravity planet, I can't even understand that level of performance, 8 minutes and something, phenomenal...

Have Fun, Train Hard,

Billy

Comment #54 - Posted by: Lars at October 5, 2008 5:45 AM

Last time I did this in 20:48 but I had a rack so in between the HPC, FS, and the Jerk's I could rack it. Today I did this with no rack so I had to pull from the ground every time I needed a rest. I wouldn't say it was a completely different WOD but it was definately tougher than last time. Felt really strong on my FS.

So i waited to do Barbara today and accidently remembered it as 3 rounds instead of 5... internet wasn't working. I finished that in like 31 minutes.

I'll have to get this one later, no way to be able to that much for time in these gyms.

Comment #60 - Posted by: blake.greeleyfirestation1c at October 5, 2008 6:48 AM

Erin you crack me up!
Too much chat..."f" you people who were whining about too much chat yesterday. I already spoke my peace on that and hopefully the message got across that there is nothing that can be done about the chat, and infact some of us enjoy the chat. If you don't like the chat, you can skip over it and just read what you want to or you can pound sand, and go to a non chat message board (how silly is this...wow!)
Fact of the matter is I am just chatting now to stir the pot in you whineholes hoping you will throw some enormous tantrum and look up lots of big words in the dictionary and put them in sentences that they don't belong in so everyone one will say "ooooooooo....watch out for this verbal lancalot" and get us all thinking you are quite the tailhole of the day.

With that said, guys that was a great video! Pat you look tight brother! Keep zoning! Freddy you rock, kick the smokes though (haha, sorry brother). Dutch, what can I say...I am speakless. Adrian, Jolie and the rest of you...you all rock! Great vid, great workout.

AllisonNYC, Brendan, tatoo nicky, some guys from Blauer are all going to workout with us today! THEY are coming to US, so it is our WOD that will be posted! Can't wait!

More to come!

Up until recently I was a member of a crossfit gym. On their WOD they had 2 weights posted for men and women. Now that I get the emails there isn't 2 different weights posted. What weights should us non-olympic, non-superfit, just a tad above average females do? Do we try to do 75% of weight or 50%?

Lungs just couldn't pump enough air!~ What a workout!

That video from Robb Wolfe about zone fat blocks on Friday came at just the right time for me. I was experiencing all the symptoms he was describing: recovery not so good, not feeling so energetic, shoulder joints aching during workouts... I have doubled my fat blocks for my 3 main meals, and today my shoulders weren't a problem in the push presses!

This community is just amazing with the wealth of good, relevant information it provides!

Holy crap, that sucked! I looked at that workout on paper and was thinking 5-7 min. Somehow, I thought I was only going to take my hands off the bar to let it fall to the ground between rounds. Wow, I should have looked at some of the times from the last time it was posted before I did it. I got a little dissafected when I realized I wasn't going to hit my goal. "Barbara", details there.

Couple of thoughts:
--I think it's the trashing of the core in round one that makes us all so much more likely to meet Pukie on this one. My kips required so much more effort after round one I was nauseous on both the PU and the squats.
--There's such a fine line between eating to be lean enough and eating enough to have adequate fuel. I felt the need to lean out a little recently and went down to 1.5xfat. I did, indeed, lean out again but I'm not performing as well on body weight met-cons or longish met-cons in general. Tough call...

As a newbie, is it better to try and do the full weight listed in the WOD and do fewer reps, or will I build my ability faster by doing less wieght but the right number of reps/rounds?

I'm really excited about being able to do a full WOD in the future, my current goal to just be able to do full WOD at the prescribed load and reps every day. Thanks for the great program, glad to have found it.

I look like such an idiot doing double unders. Even Buddy Lee couldn't fix me up. (He kinda just pushed me off to the back of the class) I think we filmed that video the week or two before the Crossfit Games so Pat & Dutch were really dialed in.

If you think I looked like a doofus in that video, maybe you'll get the chance to see the one we did at the last Cert. I really got spanked in that one and it had no double unders in it at all.

BTW- I posted yesterday that I was fighting off Pukie for five minutes after my bout with Barbara. I didn't fight hard enough. I drove to work and threw up in the locker room bathroom. Almost got my beat partner throwing up too since his locker is within earshot of the toilets.

I hate double unders and puking.

17:55 as rx'd, goal was around 15 minutes so tough luck there but I now know my strategy could have been better.

All DL and PJ straight through and I found out, too late mind you, that I really needed to do all FS straight through and just break up the HPC accordingly (6,4,2). Too many long breaks did me in but I was sucking wind hard. I didn't use a rack as well so any breaks I took required me to take the bar off the floor to re-start. Done at 7:30am on an empty stomach before work, possibly not a good WOD for those parameters.

Nice work to anyone in the 15 minute or under category, this WOD is tough.

Was completely spent after 3 rounds, despite taking a 1 minute break between rounds. First DNF in years. This has to be among the top 10 most brutal CF workouts, right up there with Linda and FGB. And right after Barbara, no less!

Ok, just realized I timed this workout wrong.
I did it like Barbara, timing the rounds. I will have to use fuzzy math to extrapolate total time.

Scaled to Pack= 3rds at 135 pounds

1.8:59+3 min rest
2.10:21+6 min rest
3.9:10=

37:30 Total

Hang Power Cleans killed me, I though I was better at them then this, I only did maybe 6 and I was tapped out, so I did full power cleans, it was the only way I could get the weight up and I didn't want to scale the weight.

Question: Is it acceptable to do front squats with the arms folded technique? You know like Count Dracula or a Cossack Dancer. It puts less strain on my wrists and I feel like I can focus on the squat more.

I have a feeling true CF Technical purists would say no because your not training your arms and wrists for the squat clean.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Almost forgot - love these kinds of WODs as they allow repetition and work on details of the movement. On DL, used this one work on the 'no legs' lift - legs bent but not moving, all glute/back work. Used the PCs to work on posture - how to do 2nd pull in such a way that heels slide back w the lift. FS - focus on moving hips back/down allowed my deepest FSs to date, and no knee pain; that back/down focus is key. PJ - just blasted them out for fun/speed. Paul

hey guys looking for some help building a pull-up bar. Ive been looking around and decided to go with 1" pipe and fittings. wondering how important it is to attach the ends of the bar to the wall as well as having it attached into the beam running across the ceiling. Its going to be over 15 feet long, and I dont want any problems with it shaking loose due to kipping. Also wondering what type of screws to use. any help is greatly appreciated.

I waited a long time to do this today, psyching my self up (anyone else have this little mental challenge?) Then I got everything set up....waremd up....then paced.

Afterwards, I thought it interesting, though. Once I hit "Start" on my stop watch, no matter what the pain, no matter what the mental arguments going on, I always go until the end.

Just curious if anyone else goes through these mental gyrations.

Charlatan comment 209,

Is it OK to do the front squats with arms folded instead of in the catch position of the clean?

Nope,

Not because I am a crossfit purest, brotha man, but because it's just not safe. A slight forward dip with your arms folded and the bar is going to leave and the arms will be in a very poor position to do anything about it, then the bar will crash down on the next object in its path, probably the knees.... "its not a quote from Coach Rip, but its close.

Front squats should be used as practice for the proper catch position. If your wrists hurt, try playing with where your elbows are, try and point them at an object that is at your shoulder level across the room. Your fingers should just be there to babysit the bar.

Speaking of babysitting, I will have to do this WOD tomorrow in the morning and make up tommorow's WOD in the evening :>) My lady Lysa is skydiving and crossfitting in Southern Cali this weekend and I have the kids at home :>)

I agree that properly racking the bar helps a lot in the front squat. I am finally starting to get it and they are becoming easier for sure.

Also, try using a tensor wrap around your wrists. I had a lot of pain and I found these wraps kicking around. I decided to try them and they have been wonderful. I only use them in extreme cases, like todays WOD!!

Ok, now that I re-read the WOD I realize I got it wrong. I missed yesterday due to helping my son move into his new house and somewhere I got mixed signals. ha ha ha I gave myself 3 minutes between rounds today and I started with 12 not 6. Oh well I still felt it.

12 DL, 9 PC, 6 FS, 3 PP @ 135 Lbs
1 - 4:00
2 - 3:25
3 - 5:50 Left Wrist hurt bad while squating. Put it down and picked it up for each squat. Ouch.
4 - 4:42
5 - 4:27

Finally figured out the part about getting the elbows up and the weight back on the chest. I really do need to start doing more practice.

Completed Day 14 of my Burpee/Double Under Challenge and then took my boys (dogs) for a run in the river. All in all a good CrossFit Day even with the errors. ha ha ha

I had to scale the weight down to go for time. I scaled it to 100lbs. I could do the Deadlifts comfortably and the Front Squats ok enough, but for some reason I had to rest practically 30 seconds between each hang-clean rep to manage it. I figured it would be best to just scale down and go as quick as I could as the WOD called for.

Now I have a goal to work towards!

WOW....I looked at this workout and thought, "Man that looks fun! I'm looking forward to that one." Holy forearms!! They gave out on me before I even finished the first round and I damn near dropped the bar several times during the hang power cleans. That was my only limiting factor, my forearms. I think I could go heavier if it weren't for that. Next time I will rethink my warm-up routine.

Began with CFWUx3 10 reps each (1 10-second Samson stretch per leg each round) with assisted pull-ups (40#) and assisted dips (50#), plus Bergener warm-up.

Injured wrist on 6 or 7th rep of 4th round. I knew it was bad enough that I'd have to call it a day, but I still wanted to finish up the round, so I proceeded with due caution and wrapped it up.

I was looking forward to this one until the end of the first round. At that point I started cussing myself and just hoping for survival.

41:08, hpc by far the most difficult, although push jerks got increasingly challenging as the rounds passed. Still, a seven minute improvement over last time.

Need to gets some 10 lb bumpers/plates!
Time 20:07

Last was 20080730. Used more weight but took much longer (35 min).

Trying to compare work and power outputs.
I used a arm of 1.5 ft for the DL and HPC and an arm of 2 ft for the FS and PP (yes those are very rough numbers).
Last time did ~29,500 ft-lbs
This time did ~25,600 ft-lbs
Power output in ft-lbs/min were 843 and 1273 respectively. So less work but more power this time. Could of done more work today but I am limited on plates (garage gym) versus the set I used in globo gym the first time.

That's after a 17 hour plane ride (not total trip time), and a change in elevation from near sea level (bucca) to several thousand feet (McGregor range). I probably should have rested but I never have had much sense, and when I saw the workout, I just had to know what my time was going to be. Me: 42yo/M/5'10"/170lbs/10%BF

Warm Up: Some stretches and one round of the WOD @ 95lbs nice and slow.

WOD: 135lbs of fun 37:35

Round 1: 6:40
Round 2: 8:49
Round 3: 10:29
Round 4: 11:36
Round 5: 10:18

Total: 37:35

Cool Down: 5 Bar Muscle Ups

135lb Dead lifts: This was a total break, focused on form and doing it as quick as possible. By the 4th set these weren't funny anymore. I believe that I did these each time in under a minute.

135lb Hang Power Cleans: Total smoker, I had to take these from the ground instead of from the hang position. No way I could do 60 of these babies from the hang. Better than last time though. Broke these up into sets of 6 and 6 each time.

135lb Front Squats: Tough one after the power cleans. I broke these into sets of 6 and 3.

135lb Push Jerk: Fairly easy, I did these in unbroken sets. I used a crappy rack position though elbows almost straight down. I look forward to the cert in December at Pendleton to figure out why I can get way more power with my elbows down for the jerk than with them out in front.

A muscle guy came by when I was in the middle of this WOD and gave me the thumbs up and told me that I was consistantly the hardest working guy in the gym. I gave him a card to Olympic Crossfit. :>)

Cleans were hard, but I found the front squats to be the worst. Balance was the tough part - I was afraid I'd flop over. First 3 sets had good form, last two found me squatting higher and higher.

Could have done the deadlifts all day.

Push jerks weren't bad either.

Sub'd 65# for all, and I'm glad I did!

First set was all unbroken, then had to do 6-6 with the hang cleans, 5-4 for squats, and 3-3 for jerks. The jerks were a lot easier just going straight through, so they were unbroken after the 2nd set. Would have been much better with chalk - sweaty hands made this go slower.

This was rough - very shaky afterwards. Just starting to feel it today.. trying to get a bunch done at work here before I am totally incapacitated!

Also I witnessed a guy deadlifting 435# 5X! I was very impressed, and told him so. He went on to compliment me on my workout, saying it was awesome to see someone doing such useful lifts at the gym :)

Nothing like 60 HPC's to force you to focus on fundamentals like the hook grip (so you don't drop the bar) and opening your hips (because using your arms just doesn't work after 40 reps). First round was 3:30 or so, after that, it was about 8-9 minutes a round with a minute or so between rounds.

Was OK with everything except HPCs, I could barely make it through the first 12, the 2nd set was the longest part of the workout and from halfway through the 3rd set onward I had to go from the ground, which I had no problem with. So I probably increased my output, but I really have to work on the form from the hang position, my forearms are like wood today.

Very scaled. 65lbs, 20:46. My forearms were shot going in due to my ride yesterday that ended up being way longer than I expected and Barbara's pull ups. Was hoping to do 85lb but couldn't hold the bar so I was just stripping away weight until I could get it where I could hold the bar. Didn't stop my watch when I was stripping away the weight.

CFWU - 3. Regular reps. Superman. Burgener.

29:02

Grip really slipping on cleans. Most sets of Front squats unbroken. Push jerks much better than expected.

Did this on 10/16/08 in a public Gym and the looks on everyones face was priceless which leads me to take on two different faces. At the regular gym I am the spectacle and on San Clemente Island (Navy Gym) I am just Joe Hamm. I had great form and when muscle bound freaks stop their work out to watch yours, thats pricelss baby. Thanks Crossfit for the strength, endurancer and confidence.

As rxd. My clean form sucks I just use strength for the most part, and the DL prior to the HPC blew that right out of the water. 135# DLs I can do all day long and not have issues, but when I needed those lower back muscles for the HPC 100% different story.

1. 242 "this cant be so bad"
2. 1015 (yes it took about 8 minutes)
3. 1721 A little better at ~7minutes
4. 2426 I'm frigg'n tired
5. 3055 ITS OVER! I have no clue how I got those cleans done but they got taken care of.
I just kept a running clock so the elapsed time includes rests and a few broken sets.

22:16.
First round was 72 lb, 2-5 were 52 lb. Should have set up a lighter bar for the front squats, and used the heavier one for the rest.

Comment #665 - Posted by: Cynthiaj in Sunnyvale, CA at October 16, 2008 10:57 PM

this was kind of weak...
rd 1 95# - forgot to do the front squats
rd 2 - 5 droppped down to 65# and did 12 front squats each set to make up for the missed first set.

time 14:48

I could have done 75# for the whole thing, next time will be 80#...

Could only manage three rounds, completed in 23:02.

Had to scale the Hanging Power Cleans to 95 lbs.

Next time might want to scale everything down to 115 lbs. or so and ensure good form.

damn

first leg work out coming off a strained quad that had me out for a couple weeks. Bad decision to do this first thing back.

managed 3 1/2 rounds in 20 minutes before everything stopped working.

6 minutes off PR?, maybe I only did 4 sets last time, maybe I did 6 sets this time. This is a tough one, dizzy at several points along the way. OH-SQ felt quite tough, probably need to work on these a little more.

uh oh, dufus did not read. did OH-SQ instead of front Squats, that may have helped. Oh well.
