Thank you again, and I am grateful for you all!

Tony Blauer is just 5 minutes up the road from my home. I still have not made i over to see him or the Facility here in Virginia Beach. Shame on me!

And crossfit discovers/spurns yet another great coach...now that was some effective teaching of an elusive concept - the kipping PU. Articulating and teaching the kipping PU makes me feel so inadequate. Maybe it's just my personal deficiency in *visual percipacity*. I have to thank CF for showing me once again where I suck. I mean that - really.

I have a question: Where can I find one of those superbadass HUGE stopwatches to post on the wall of my garage? I was looking online tonight and the only ones I could find cost like several hundred dollars. I want one for like 59.99. Please email me if you can help.

Question on intensity

I'm not new to crossfit but I am new to attempting the WOD with intensity, I started out nice and slow over the last year trying to build strength before getting to hardcore.

My question is the few times that I've really tried to give it my all probably somewhere around a dozen or so times, I get really light headed and dizzy almost to the point of passing out then I have to lay down before I fall/throw up, I go ghost white pale and then have to make a bowel movement. I'm 25 6'2" 183lbs mostly muscle with a little bit of fat on my belly, sometimes i run a slightly high BP but usually really good about 110/60 with a normal pulse. I'm on the zone now, I pass my physicals with flying colors and they are pretty indepth for my work. Does this happen to anyone else? Should i consult a Doc.? Should i tone down the intensity so I can finish the WOD then work on getting the time down later on?

Thanks

Interesting article. There's obviously a huge problem in Mexico; the drug cartels half-run the border areas. The question is, what can we do about it? I'm all for aggressive pursuit of these scum, though any actions we take against them will have to 1) include Mexican law enforcement officials, and 2) match the organizational/logistical level of the cartels themselves - both of which will pose significant challenges at multiple levels.
Additionally, looking at *why* these people are so interested in moving drugs and people across the border, we can work to remove at least some of that profit motive. Rather than focusing upon a "War on Drugs" that has had little meaningful effect upon demand, and hasn't seemed to have put that much a dent in supply, we can undertake comprehensive rehabilitiation and reeducation programs to help get people off of drugs, and we can re-examine some of our more ridiculous drug laws. I'm not advocating having heroin flowing openly in the streets, but there needs to be a realistic appraisal of the common opinion (and, importantly, practice) regarding some of the less-intense drugs available in the US.

Interesting article. I'm going to Big Bend Ntnl Park in about a month. It's on the border of TX and Mexico. As a kid, I went there several times, and you used to be able to cross the river freely. I think we paid a dude with a rowboat $10 to take a dozen of us boyscouts over and bring us back a few hours later. Now the border is closed, and those tiny villages don't get any of the tourist money they used to. Since 911, crime in the park is up. People sneak across the border and break into vehicles.
This was a self regulating community in a remote, desolate area, for literally hundreds of years. It's now part of a much larger machine.

Possibly Sunday morning? Sounds awesome.

Reading the article, it sure seems Mexico has a problem. Thing is, I couldn't help but immediately focus on the fact that America's got a problem here, too: illegals still making their way into the country.

Don't get me wrong; a 3-day journey through a desert means you've got some desire, but I'm not so sure it means we shouldn't try a bit harder to fence/border the area, rough terrain or not.

Decent video, Todd Whitman seems like a great coach...brother. Still working my kip, I like his big C analogy.

This article is weird. Captain Obvious must have written it. Doesn't real tell you anything, "Traffic" didn't.

So what's the point of this blatantly conservative magazines article? They keep talking about Arizona? Who used to be Governor of Arizona? Gosh...what was his name again? He'd probably be the guy who would allegedly know how to handle those evil Drug cartels and close the borders forever. Connect the dots la la la la, thinly veiled partisan garbage.

Who pays to read a magazine that tells you what you already believe? That's awesome but the way I do it is free.

I guess we should just start digging the moot now.

Lame...

#15 aswmg - Intensity question.

Very good question. Going from safe to extreme intensity is probably not the way to go about it. It is always best to start cautiously even when you are wishing to take your intensity to another level. How about raising the intensity slightly at the start of the workout, assess how you feel, then decide whether you can take it up another notch or not. Progressive intensity I guess how I would call it.

Remember that starting out "redlining" probably means you won't finish the workout as best as you could. Take the 400m runner at the Olympics. Yes they want to finish as quick as they can, but they are not sprinting at the start of the race, they are slowly building a rhythm and momentum.

So develop a steady tempo at the start of your WOD, then build on this intensity so you complete your workout fast, with intensity, and efficiently. Rhabdo has been widely discussed on the crossfit forums. No need to become a casualty.

Comment #24 - Posted by: bladeboy at September 20, 2008 10:01 PM

I have a suspicion that the ones making the trek through the desert are the ones trying to come here and make better for themselves. The ones that come here and commit crimes and bring down the rest of society (I'm sure are making it into the country a lot easier b/c of gang ties) are sort of like guns in America. Gun reform doesn't prevent criminals from having them, it just prevents upstanding law abiding citizens from having them.

I deal with illegals on a regular basis. I'm some what torn between how I feel about they're presence. My family immigrated here through Ellis, however, they did it legally, learned English and did not commit crimes. They worked hard for what they had and believed in Freedom.

I come across many Mexican illegals that are trying to do the same thing, however, I find that they don't learn English and end of violating civil laws that later gets them into criminal misdemeanor issues, leading to their deportation. Unfortunately, these few hard workers are ruined by the ones that come here and leach off the system, straining an economy that is already having tough times and then forming violent street gangs. Mexican gangs are one of the fastest growing criminal syndicates in AZ. They are quickly becoming established and more dangerous. They are almost always here illegally and do not come through the desert because of the their gang ties.

They are also the ones pushing our drug issues. I think that if we cracked down harder on border issues we could take care of 2 issues with 1 stone however, we have to be willing to provide the resources and manpower to secure the border. We then need to address the rest of illegals that are here that are not Mexican.

#23 - Oh, by the way your lost. Janet Napolitano has been our governor for some time now and has done little if anything to help address our border issues. To my recollection, she's never been to the border to see the issue first hand, at least its never been on the news as such. Oh, and she was on the long list for possible Osama Obama VP's. Go figure.

"She continues to fight for quality schools, affordable health care, sensible and forward-thinking economic development, a safe homeland, and has taken extensive measures to create fiscal responsibility and to end bureaucratic waste." (quote from her website)

In reality, AZ schools are far worse in quality of education in comparison to the rest of the country (AZ ranked dead last in 2007, oh by the way they've intigrated a number of the illegal students into classrooms and the teachers have to teach both spanish speaking and english speaking students)
AZ is in dire troubles do to the housing market crashes and the housing market was they largest economic boom AZ had.
AZ's crime statistics have gone up every year she has been in office and illegals have attributed to more than 1/2 the violent crime.
And as of late she has come under fire for allowing money from one industuries licensing fees and allocated it other sources which is a violation of the state Consitution and is now putting the industries that she took the money from in fear of financially failing due to lack of funds.

Way to go Janet Napolitano and the Democratic Party!

Sounds like you could be a bit dehydrated prior to your workouts. Going pale, dizzy, and the urge to defecate are symptoms of dehydration. It's possible that you arn't getting enough water in you before your workouts. Good hydration takes anywhere from 14-48 hours, so just guzzeling water the night before isn't going to help much. Try to do a week where you are getting pleanty of water and see if that helps anything. I'm willing to bet that it will help.

yay for rest days! nice that it coincides with Sundays (our "holiday routine" on the boat).
So, I wanted to share this with you guys because I find it funny. Yesterday my Chief saw me getting off the couch with a little trouble because my thighs killed after Murph. He asked me "What's wrong Petty Officer?" He's a tool and I normally avoid conversation with him, but since it was about Crossfit I've become almost a Crossfit bible thumper if you will, trying to spread the word. After a brief explanation of what Crossfit is about to him he threw out the comment "Is this a cult or something?" Now, normally coming from him weird comments wouldn't spike on my radar, but he's like the third person to ask me if Crossfit is a cult after I explain it to them. I find this hilarious because I'm sitting here explaining the most revolutionary form of fitness I have ever come across and they act scared of it. I don't know, has anyone else gotten that reaction? Maybe it's the way I'm explaining it. I still think it's hilarious.
Well, I'm going to go stuff myself with pancakes (i know, totally not Zone, but it's Sunday brunch and that's one thing I look forward to each week.) I will meet with you again cultmates.

Good article. Mexico is as it is for a reason. If we continue to import millions of their citizens and allow them to live here without assimilating, they will bring their problems (corruption, unemployment, crime and the awesome creative power of a sack of doornobs) to our entire nation, as they already have in all the border areas. I think it better to export our ideas then to import the entire population of the third world simply because we've fooled ourselves in to thinking they're all "good people, just looking for work".

The problem is unresolvable though and I've learned to live with it. If we'd put up a wall in the late 80's we'd have some hope. As it is, we can get ready for somewhere in the neighborhood of 130+ million immigrants in the next 40 years. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/01/AR2008090101714.html

Imagine what that will do to health care, the environment, urban/suburban sprawl, crime, government, the economy...

I don't know how many Americans are killed in Iraq everyday but DHS estimates that 12 Americans are murdered by illegal aliens every day right here at home. An additional 13 are killed by illegal alien drunk drivers. And additional 8 are sexually assulted by illegal aliens.

Like it or not, that's low intensity warfare - and we're the targets.

its easy, build the wall first, arrest the employers and shut off the open well of benefits. Have the fed step in and outlaw safe harbor cities like NYC and SF.
But this will never happen. This is a consequence of NAFTA. And you can point squarely at Bush, Clinton and Congress for allowing this to happen. Given the glaring lack of response I wouldnt be surprised if it were negotiated into NAFTA.
Bush is a globalist first, and puts global economics before the preservation of the American society and culture. These new immigrants are not coming in to be Americans. The free trade Bush espouses opens borders to the extend of free migration, blending cultures and economies. You, the union contractor remember this when you cannot find work, and you have to string out jobs just to stay employed. Some argue that the infusion of cheap labor into our society pulled America through the post 9/11 period, but that is a very thin argument. This all started at the top. We voted for them, its really their fault.

Since I wanted to hear Coach speak, I went ahead and downloaded and listened to the mp3 files off Neil's blog.

My advice is to NOT wait until 8am (PDT) to try and dial it in. Try fifteen minutes early just to make sure you've got it figured out.

More than the details or even the wisdom of the current bailout, I'm struck by the almost complete silence by congress and the president. Our elected officials are totally dependent on the advice of two people--the Fed Chairman and the Treasury Secretary.

Everyone in congress has an opinion on war, foreign policy, global warming, offshore drilling, and abortion. Not one of them seems to have a clue about banking. When they find their voice, it will only be to to avoid, shift, and assign blame.

I have come to realize that all the drug and human smuggling is actually a response to American Empirialism.

If we would just learn to TALK to the drug lords and Slave traders, and perhaps give them a clear path to transit back and forth across the border, the violence would end.

Time to end the COWBOY mentality of defending something which isn't really ours. (Property, land, communities, and our way of life) With a more open minded (and borders) approach we can all get along.

We can stop this people! We just need to quit being selfish.

#51 CCTJOEY,

You're being willfully obtuse. People who have set up shop to meet market demands for illicit drugs and illicit immigration are denied means other than violence to solve their problems and so even more violence from the government is applied to quell them.

The violence isn't inherent in the trade but rather is a consequence of the nature of the enforcement of laws prohibiting it. Your sarcastic argument is the sort of thing that is used to justify police states.

WOW, just finished listening to the CFR debut followed immediately by the mentioned Strength Coach Podcast (which can be found on iTunes - Episode 19.5). It's absolutely STUNNING how misinformed these gentlemen are. They are obviously knowledgeable in the arena of fitness, but they are woefully lacking in solid data regarding their arguments against CrossFit. Some examples:

Kipping as cheating. Well, I'm not even going to go into this. If people are REALLY still making this argument and don't understand that a kipping pull-up is a different exercise that has different objectives than a dead hang pull-up, then they have proven my point about not doing their research before speaking.

Rhabdo: This is one of the most common arguments that I see. People state that the CrossFit community is filled with false bravado regarding Rhabdomyolosis. Judging by the fact that there are several publicly available CFJ articles which state the dangers of Rhadbo and that our job as trainers is to properly indoctrinate our clients to this potentially fatal injury, I'm not sure where they are getting their data. A t-shirt?! Come on! So the ENTIRE CrossFit community laughs in the face of Rhabdo and is leading people to face certain death because one guy decided to make a shirt. Obviously, these guys have never spoken with a CrossFit trainer regarding Rhabdo.

Secondly, their assertion about how "some guys" they've witnessed at training camps were putting out more wattage than we do in our WODs don't get rhabdo because they're technically sound. I challenge Mr. Boyle to present ONE CASE where a veteran CrossFitter has come down with Rhabdo. It hasn't happened, therefore his assertion isn't sound because he's comparing the output/technique of a novice CrossFitter to that of a seasoned athlete (I'm postulating that he/she is seasoned because they're at a training camp and referencing power output). Which leads me to my next point.

They mention that there isn't an emphasis on progression; that CrossFit advocates running through exercises without a care for technique. They even go so far as to say that we don't emphasize the deadlift before focusing on the clean. There are numerous references that show that it is understood that having a solid deadlift is a prerequisite to undertaking a barbell clean.

Speaking of the Olympic lifts, Coach Boyle states that the "fundamental rule of Olympic weightlifting" is "don't do more than six reps." He additionally states that "any good Olympic lifting coach" will tell you that any more than that and you "cannot not have the level of technical mastery that you need in the Olympic lifts." The coaches that he's referencing are speaking about using the O-lifts to achieve peak numbers on the lifts. Is he saying that an athlete that can POWER clean 200+ lbs, doesn't have the technical ability or requisite strength and stability to safely clean and jerk 135-lbs?

They clearly don't have all the data regarding the lawsuit placed against the FORMER (they neglected to mention that part) affiliate. They speculate about what the workout was, even though that information has been put into the public domain. I would like to hear Coach's Boyle's assessment as to how an ALL-NAVY WRESTLER could become floored by a workout PROVEN to be completed by children under the age of 10 with no ill effects. Maybe, and this is just one crazy guy talking, there were other factors involved. There are many risk factors associated with Rhabdo: dehydration, other pre- or post-workouts, alcohol intake, etc... Without knowing the whole story, it's pretty difficult to look at this case and make the judgment that a CrossFit workout is to blame.

I think it's a shame that these men are so blind to what our community is about that they feel the need to throw around utterly stupid and false quotes. For example, at 27:30, "Saying things like, 'If falling off the rings and breaking your neck bothers you, then we don't want you around the ranks of CrossFitters.'" I'd LOVE to see where Greg Glassman said this!

Did anyone else find it interesting that one of the guys said it was hard to teach someone to squat? At my Level 1 certification, I witnessed 55 people learn how to squat properly in oh, 5 minutes. Did we all need work afterwards? Absolutely, but in the amount of time it takes to run through a warm-up, we were given the tools to improve our squats on our own - working towards the virtuosity of movement that every CrossFitter strives for.

Hell, Michael Boyle himself didn't even know if CrossFit was Incorporated! Come on! Don't you think that as a trainer looking to ATTACK a competitor's (make no mistake, there is definitely major business competition here! A free site vs. a site that required $10 a month) method's and principals, that he should AT LEAST gather some background information?

Lastly, and most comically, at 45:27 on the podcast, they actually said that CrossFitters are "like a bunch of ADD kids" that "don't want to gain mastery of anything" that AREN'T GETTING FIT. Neil, you'd BETTER challenge Michael Boyle to step up and bring some of his top athletes to compete against our firebreathers. I think that's the only way that these guys will at least garner a semblance of respect for the capability of the CrossFit system. Well, they still probably won't since Greg and Lauren don't charge for this stuff, so obviously it has to be false. :rolleyes

I would apologize for the length of this post, but I'm not really sorry about it in this instance. I hope everyone has a great rest day! :-)

Not so much with the resting today.

Boulder Backroads Half Marathon

1:42:53

All training done with WODs and Crossfit Endurance workouts. No long runs, not since my last 1/2, two and half years ago!

The last two miles of sprinting to the finish really proved the efficacy of strength and sprint conditioning as a method of endurance training. Sure it hurt, but I could just keep pushing on the pedal and kept speeding up.

No more of those for a while....

Biking (not mountain biking of course) should be fine on your knee. I feel your pain. I've tried, but I can't do more than half of CF exercises right now, and certainly not anyting timed. Knee injuries suck!

Comment #64 - Posted by: Pleepleeus at September 21, 2008 12:57 PM

#62 Cory, do a search for Mark Rippetoe and his rehab "program" for fixing numerous injuries. Start here

http://www.strengthmill.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=36 (fairly W/F/S, except for language).

Learning to squat and move properly are the first steps towards CORRECTING your knee problems. You don't have to go through life with bad knees, get started with Rip's stuff, and then, WHILE FOCUSING ON VIRTUOSITY OF MOVEMENT, start CrossFitting. You'll be astonished how great your whole body will feel as muscle strength imbalances balance themselves out and tight muscles, tendons, and ligaments learn to move through proper ranges of motion.

Good luck! Get over to the CrossFit forum and start a log. You'll be able to get a ton of support and answers to questions that will inevitably come up along the way!

You probably won't either, because it directly refutes the ideology of many on this board who fervently believe in the brilliant efficacy of the "invisible hand" of unfettered free market capitalism. The near complete implosion of our financial system due in large measure to the deregulation of the industry during the 90's all too clearly shows the likely outcome of unchecked capitalism if left completely to it's own devices.
(greed-increased risk-bubble-collapse)

The only slightly gratify result of this Trillion dollar fiasco is seeing all the free market economic 'winners' queuing up to the government trough for handouts to save them from the consequences of their actions. (personal responsibility anyone?)I guess every good capitalist is a socialist at heart when your own wealth is at risk.

I had injury of left knee 15 yrs ago. I continued to run, however after my second marathon I gave it up. My problem is with cartilage, and doctors told me years ago surgery is inevitable, eventually. Doctors also told me to lose body weight and gain more muscles around knee (upper and lower leg, obviously), so I do that tru CF.
I ride bicycle a lot, swim and use elliptical trainer, no matter how some hard-core CFtters feel about it.
I scale down WOD's, however not on the type of exercise, but usually on the weight. Most importantly, after long day and difficult WOD, I sleep on my back with leg ellevated in knee area.

I wish you all the best. Do not give up, try different things until you find those that work for you and keep you fit.

Nice try, but a predictably lame ideological spin in trying to place blame anywhere but where it truly belongs. What about Lehman, Merrill, AIG Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, WaMu, Wachovia and the hundreds of other banks that are currently under severe financial pressure. All publicly traded companies I believe. The consequences of this fiasco are clearly a result of unregulated capitalism regardless of what Rush may tells you.

I'll bite too. A huge problem with those banks was the that the SEC changed/relaxed capital standards allowing leveraging ratios of 30-40:1 to actual capital. Leveraging being when a bank uses borrowed money invested in the hopes of earning more interest than is paid. Already, 3 of the 5 banks who received such "favorable" treatment by the SEC have failed.

The government has decided which investments were too dangerous for individuals and created new regulations against all sorts of these practices. The result is a rat's nest of regulations and accounting practices. Businesses will pursue risky investments to make money, regardless of regulation, for themselves and for investors. With the housing boom, there was a lot of money to be made. So, the finance sector, created a new safe (read: safe as long as house prices keep going up) product that has not yet been banned (MBSs). Well, housing prices dropped, and every loss was magnified many times over.

Anyway, if we go a step back further than your original post (#67), we'll find that in the 90s, the Clinton administration with a Republican Congress, both complicit, formed the GSEs Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae with the purpose of increasing home ownership. Fine. But included was the idea that "traditional" measures of credit-worthiness were "outdated." It would later (2008) turn out that putting 20% down on a house IS a good idea!

Now, I'm a Libertarian, but I don't think it would take a genius to see that government caused the 1st problem (the SEC), the government caused the 2nd problem (the regulations), and the government created the 3rd problems (FM&FM). So, what is the answer?

Please take this with a grain of salt. I definitely support small and sensible regulation of the free market.

Unfortunately there are no economists who are used by the 24 hour news cycles. We had been talking about these issues 5 years ago with my Economics professors. Everyone knew there was a problem...mainly ineffective regulation of a housing market subverted by power-hungry Congressmen/women who wanted to "get every citizen into a home". That, coupled with the refusal to actually enforce the regulations that were in place led to a crash of the housing market...the banking sector follows naturally since they were the ones giving out these mortgages, and trading them on secondary and tertiary markets.

As far as the "fundamentals of our economy" as we had heard famously by John McCain...yes they are strong. Unfortunately he foolishly backed off and said that he meant "the people" when he said fundamentals. No, our tech industries, defense, services, manufacturing (certain sectors), etc are actually very strong. The one sector experiencing this "crisis" is the financial sector. And no, he's not necessarily my choice for President.. thats not a "vote for John McCain" comment.. just a comment on our economy.

A comparison to the Great Depression is just laughable. During the Great Depression people didnt have the means to feed their families and had to give up their children to keep them alive. This hit every sector of the economy, save the black market. At this point, we are just worried if it will cost us too much to get to Gamestop to pick up Madden '09.

Anyway, the bailouts are not as scary as the news cycle is making it out to be. In regards to AIG, it was a government funded loan, that must be repayable in 2 years. That is a big gamble, however, with the size of AIG, and the number of employees/beneficiaries that would have been affected by AIG closing, there really wasnt much of an option. By taking on the debt of the others, the government is not simply throwing away the 700 billion like the news is saying, they have taken on the LOANS, the mortgages. They are not worthless, in fact there is a very good chance that by restructuring the payment plans of many of the loans, the government could actually make money off of these loans. If not, there are homes, physical property that are at the back of these mortgages, and those can be auctioned/used for social programs if no buyers are present.

My point is ...all is not lost, it was a bad situation, brought on by this administration, and going back 4 or 5 previously, of course Congress...Republicans and Democrats, Wall Street, and especially the greed and "handout mentality" of the American people who took 600k mortgages when they were making 60k a year, hoping they could sell the house for a profit in 2 years.

And yes, real economists saw this coming, no one wanted to listen.

"Paulson's monster
by Robert Peston 21 Sep 08, 12:56 PM

More details have been disclosed over night about the new state-owned institution being created by Hank Paulson, the US Treasury Secretary, to purchase distressed US mortgages and securities manufactured from those mortgages.

He wants to raise $700bn for this institution, from the sale of US government bonds in tranches of $50bn. That $700bn is about 35 per cent more than the entire annual budget of the US defence department.

And to facilitate the funding, the statutory ceiling on US public debt is being raised from $10.6 trillion to $11.3 trillion a rise of 6.6 per cent - which puts this ceiling at around a fifth less than the entire annual output of the US economy.

According to the draft proposal put to Congress, Paulson would have very wide discretion in deciding precisely what "mortgage-related assets" could be purchased, but they would include "residential or commercial mortgages and any securities, obligations or other instruments that are based on or related to such mortgages".

....
As for the mechanism for buying the poisonous assets from banks, a fact sheet put out by the US Treasury talks about using reverse auctions.

This would mean that commercial banks would bid to sell their assets to the Government, and the winning bid - and the clearing price for all bids - would be the lowest price put forward by the banks (hence the "reverse" tag).

The merit in using a reverse auction is that it should provide better protection for taxpayers from future losses, because the Treasury-owned bank would be paying the lowest price acceptable to banks for the assets.
However, the worry would be the one I highlighted in my note of yesterday: if the selling price of these impaired assets was determined by what the most stressed banks would accept, that could force all banks into further writedowns, which in turn would further undermine their balance sheets, and thus enfeeble rather than strengthen the banking system.

So just how big a bank would Paulson's baby turn out to be?

Well if it were buying mortgages and asset-backed securities at somewhere between 10 and 50 cents in the dollar - which is not an unreasonable assumption based on the latest markdowns by banks - it would end up owning assets with an origination value of well over $2,000bn (or $2 trillion).

That would make it about the same size as HSBC, on one measure - so something of a monster."

I think we paid a dude with a rowboat $10 to take a dozen of us boyscouts over and bring us back a few hours later. Now the border is closed, and those tiny villages don't get any of the tourist money they used to. Since 911, crime in the park is up. People sneak across the border and break into vehicles."
