Hi all,

I'm rather new to CrossFit. Unfortunately my gym doesn't have the rubber barbell plates. How would you suggest substituting something for cleans and all those exercises that really require the rubber weight plates. Thanks for your help. This site is great.

Tyler comment #29, what else can I do besides clean and Jerk because I cannot drop the weights at my gym?

Tyler, some folks, me included, don't drop the weight but instead go from overhead to shoulder and from shoulder to hang and from hang to the ground on every rep. It gives you a better workout, like doing full squat cleans on Grace, and your gym should not have a problem with it, if they do, you should find another gym, you will be getting kicked out of that one anyway.

Wow, called this one. Took two rest days and knocked out Grace today in 4m15s. Finished up with a "Franita" 7-5-3 in 1m10s. Also did a Burg warmup and crossfit warmup series.

Knocked out L-sits for 3 20s reps.

Yeah, I'm still pretty wasted from last cycle, so I can't imagine this'll go well at all.

I can't wait.

Tyler, our CO doesn't let us drop weights in the gym, either, so we just have to control the weight all the way down. We have the rubber plates, but they still won't let us drop 'em. Silliness.

Luckily I get to have a good night's sleep before tackling Grace.

#27 - The answer is above already but Grace is floor to lockout overhead anyway you can. It is the one exception I know of (not to say there aren't more) where "clean" doesn't mean a squat clean. CR (post #19) posted some links with amplifying info. You must have missed it. Cheers!

Coming from an o-lift background, the clean has always been refered to as a full squat clean. Grace then should be changed to a power clean & jerk.

understand your point but think of it this way, if the movement were only clean then clean means squat clean unless otherwise specified. when the movement is clean AND jerk you can squat clean or power clean. if in an oly lifting competition you could power clean if you wanted to but the squat clean allows you to lift more weight. in grace you can squat clean if you have to but power cleans will be faster.

Did a WOD demonstrated by Brendan. 1st time doing this one.

10 Rounds for time:

135lb Deadlifts - 15 reps
Pushups - 15 reps

Time: 15:06

Thought I might go heavier on the Deadlifts before starting...glad I didn't, DL's were tougher than I thought!

Well, today will be my first WOD but I doubt I'll do so well because I'm still learning all of these workouts. With the overly crowded and poorly stocked gyms on the boat it's hard to be able to do most WODs, but this one should be doable what with only needing one bar and one area. I'm pretty excited. I also got my copy of Mastering the Zone in the mail today that I ordered from Amazon. I'm pretty stoked about getting that going as well, as much as I can with this boat food. So mostly today is a very exciting first day of a real Crossfit workout!

Finished "Grace" in 20 minutes today. I personally looked up the technique to the clean and jerk again. I saw it as it was. I full squat clean to stand then the jerk after. If it were any way in my opinion, then it would be stated as a power clean. I remember looking up explanations of WOD's and it was stated that if it says for example, clean, then it is full squat unless stated otherwise. From Parris island. Semper Fidelis and God Bless

I am going to try 95#... it might take me 20 minutes though!! I did Squat C&J at 85#'s in July and that took me 15:45. I wonder how this will compare, especially since it is heavier but power cleans instead?

Thought I would have to scale this one, so I started with 115# and did the first 10 reps in about a minute. Put 135# on after that and did 30 more in 8:20. For whatever reason this one was much easier than I thought it would be.

Zerg.- 115# times 10 reps, then 95# times 20 reps. Total time 11:18.

I don't pretend to know what the Coach intended when he invented this workout, but I do know one thing, Grace peformed with the squat clean is MUCH MUCH harder than the power clean version. If you want to get the typical Crossfit near death workout experience then do it with squat cleans, and if squat cleans are too technical for you, then do a power clean, front squat, split jerk complex.

First time doing "Grace", so I read all the comments and referenced message board posts debating power cleans and full cleans. There wasn't exactly a consensus, so I decided to do power cleans (my affiliate is doing power cleans because most people are learning the movement for the first time).

Anyway, I got 2:50 with power cleans using 135 lbs.

I'll do regular cleans soon or next time.

Well, this was my first WOD ever, woot woot! I just did the 45lb bar because I was mostly concentrating on learning the form correctly. Did that in about 9 minutes. I'm pretty excited about that for a first day!
That's it though, it's over, I'm hooked! The feeling of crossfit is much more than just working out. Here's what I mean. I run into the tiny weight gym right after khaki hour (probably the least busy time) and wait around for like 5 minutes to get the straight bar. I start doing Grace and out of nowhere some guy I don't know comes by and says "Doing the Crossfit workout for today?" And we automatically get into a conversation about Crossfit and I told him about getting the "Mastering the Zone" which he didn't know about. It's such an amazing random bonding experience. I flippin love it! I've totally fallen in love with Crossfit.

My shoulder doesn't like overhead ballistic movements, so I went slow and worked on form:

105# - several squat clean and jerks to start, power cleans and jerks when I became too fatigued to squat clean. 10:05. Did these outside on the stony area next to the porch so I could drop the weight without smushing a cat. Now have two 2" deep ruts where the plates landed each rep....no wonder it felt like I was pulling through more ROM!

Great job on the Man Grace - I still can not clean 135# once! You both are my inspiration to get O-lift instruction....

It's cool to change this to power cleans I suppose, since we want to be able to perform and put up fast times. However, the competitions should be based on bettering oneself through the way a clean and jerk are demonstrated. I for one love to be competetive and all, but I also want the best result in my form and development through the crossfit WOD's. I am proud to have completed 20:00 minutes on "Grace" with 135# That way if I needed to scale down, I would have to keep the form of the clean and press. As well, when I decide to scale up after I can do 135 more fluid in concession(faster time resulting)Then I will challenge myself further. Unless it tells me power clean, or any different form of each WOD, then I would follow the domo's and not change the Program, Either just deal with the times until more proficient or scale down if too much to ensure the technique and form is done correctly. I was extremely impressed with the ladies performance as well. I would love to see them advance to a full squat version as well and really progress past thier barriers. We all have them. I am new to the oly lifts, but love the results and at 33 I am learning so muc hmore about the importance of not sacrificing certain aspects when it comes to development.

Ok here is my question. It was brought to my attention by a friend of mine the other day that crossfit is a one plane style of workout. Let me make it clear that I'm a true crossfitter and there is nothing better. It was a very good point that we are very push pull and not much on lateral movements stressing the adductors and abductors. I don't know how to win this arguement. Robert #190 My appologies to all on this one. I didn't have the proper facts to my case and should have investigated further. I did perform full squat cleans, and wasn't trying to offend. I agree if he says anyhow, then so be it. I only looked into it as the progression. I think that crossfit is awesome all the way around. It has taken my own renegade experience that has made me extremely successful in adapting to anything new learned to a whole new level. I have learned new skills and stripped away the inessential. Learned to keep the variety with the indiviual goals still in mind. I love seeing the effort by so many instead of so few with something that motivates all of us to improve and be effective. Just to be involved and apply all learned there are results demanded. All crossfit has done is shown me the things a concept called Jeet Kune Do Showed me when I started learning and eventually teaching while still learning self defense. I don't think in the video EC mentioned anything about 85% BW...she mentioned that the weight that Nicole and Annie used in the video, 85#, is a different percentage of their bodyweight than hers. If the average male CrossFitter, say about 180 pounds, did "Grace" with 85% of his BW, he'd have to use 153#! I think 75% BW is a little more accurate.

I'm not up to manly-girl standards quite yet! 75% of my BW would be about 112#, which is doable, but ain't no way I'm strong enough to attempt "Grace" with 135! I think I have to stick with my normal 95# for a while longer...

Freakin' awesome performance, ladies! Now I know what my future "Grace" goal should be :)

LMAO. I am the SLOWEST person here at 16:09.

I did the full weight - and probably could go 10# heavier. I also barely broke a sweat so it's quite likely I could cut this time down. BUT, first time with Grace, so I wanted to take it slow.

Now I know. I'll do better next time. On the plus side, my form is improving because I felt very good on the last rep with the jerk requiring little effort at all.

I really wanted to do this exercise because it looks super cool. Maybe I'll do it tomorrow instead. Unless I'm at work, I don't have access to an Olympic Weight set.

So today I did the following:

Three rounds for time of the following:

Run 200m
20 Kettlebell swings 1.5 pood (53#)
20 Push Presses with two 50# dumbbells.

Time:

20.38.58.

The running really kicked my tail after doing the first set of exercises.

The Push Presses were really difficult. I might have used too much weight if I wanted to be able to go through the whole set without breaking it up.

However, I know I need to use that kind of weight, if not more.

Using 135 lbs. My shoulder is still wonky, so I can't lock out all the way at the top. I ended up having to do push presses, instead of jerks, which slowed me down a lot. Also, no bumper plates, so I had to control it on the way down.

Rowed 2k easy, some sprints thrown in; Burgener warmup; some C&J at 95 lbs.

Then Grace scaled to 115, 5:05. Split jerks alternating legs, thinking about telemark turns! Only a couple of months to go! Feel confident I can do this as rx'd next time.

Then ran 1 minute sprints on treadmill, 5:42 per mile pace, rests were 1 min., 50 sec., 40, 30, 20, 30, 40, 50, 1 minute. Some stretches, "it's a day."

C&J will be most efficient. Max output will, however, kill the efficient technique. The productive work is the same regardless of technique. The metabolic costs of the workout increase dramatically with weakening/failing technique.

taking a lesson from the uneven Grace video, I split it into 7 sets of 5. Probably means I should have gone faster, but it was my first time with Grace and I don't mess around with overhead lifts.

This is my first grace so I'm happy with my technical PR. I originally though I should scale to 95 but I knew I could power clean 135 and I can push press 150 so it added up.

How do you keep people away from you when you O lift? These freakin guys always walk right behind me when I've got the weight overhead. I try and tell them and they get all defensive, "I was walking around you!" Yeah well if I had to dump this your definition of "around" might get you killed! I can see the headlines now "Officer in Iraq kills Soldier with Olympic Bar!"

Just an observation, when you are playing with load as Rx'd :
I personally think the way to go with Grace is just go optimal straight away and stick at it as long as you can. Try to perform more reps unbroken each time it comes up. You may disagree, but it is just personally opinion

It's my second week doing cross fit and it hurts- in a good way: I got through this one in 6:11 could have done it quicker but the other workouts I've done so far killed me and I think I tried to pace out too much. Full squat cleans, no power cleans for myself or clients. I believe in the most bang for the buck, even if it takes a couple minutes longer = more work = increased adaptation/gains.

I tried the doing the Jerks as more of a thruster this time. I got smoked at the CF Games in the "Heavy Grace" final by guys doing it as a thruster - I debated this with Freddy C. as we were getting ready to start. He went with thrusters and was smokin'. I was push and split jerking each time, then dumping the bar, re-setting and going again. Lots of time loss. Thrusters were quicker and I rode the bar down more to save time with setting up. First set of 10, then sets of 5 with a couple shake outs in between.

First try at Grace, started at 135 pounds but dropped to 115 after 2 reps. So, I completed this in 11:54 with poor technique (the clean was miserable) but the jerk looked almost OK by the finish.

I've been videotaping all my workouts for about 2 weeks and I've got a lot to work on! The powerlifts (squat, bench and deadlift) are no real problem since I've been doing them for over 35 years, but the Oly lifts are where I'm sucking as quickness has never been my strong suit.

Did a quick push jerk after pwr clean, ended up working totally off of toes, hell of quad workout.

Pacing - started out w five as fast as possible, then lifted again every seven seconds. I will do this again next time but start with 10 fast, then on the 7s interval. Paul

My first Buttercup Grace -- 33lbs -- 13 minutes.

First time doing clean & jerk from the ground instead of "hang clean". It was actually too low as the plates i have only put the bar about 6 inches from the ground. That part was fine though as I have gumby like flexibility in most parts. I didn't really try to go for speed as i'm still working on form with the jerk.

Last time I did Grace was 8:10. My goal was to break 6 minutes this time. I paced myself through the whole thing, just trying to do a rep every 12 seconds, and it worked out pretty well. Never stopped for more than a few breaths. Next time I'll do it in under 5.

The video inspires me to kick it up a notch.

The CF Games had 155 lbs for men this summer.

Maybe I should push it to that level or a little higher. Maybe 185? I could probably do it in the same time as EC and Sam. I'll try that tomorrow morning.

Did Chief the other day. Did 16 rounds. I weigh 310 lbs. I was proud of the effort. The movements were all very clean. I need to pick up the intensity on that one.

Finished Michael yesterday in about 25 minutes. With the extra weight, it takes me a little longer to move my ass. Yet, I am getting the workouts in.

Being a lanky birdlike creature, I get schooled on alot of these lifts. My time seems a little quick, I should have upped the weight a bit but my form on the last five or so reps would have been REAL bad, instead of just poor.

For me, Grace was like a 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, etc.

All power cleans, which were strong. I don't know why I struggled with jerk technique today, but I found things a lot tougher today than with The Chief on Sat.

Managed about 5 or 6 "good" split jerks which made the weight seem easy; however, most ended up being push jerks which are my 1 rep max (not easy).

Managed to get my 30 reps but also had about 8 fails where I had to totally reload.

Good news: I love the option of dropping the load with my bumpers and Pendlay bar.

Overall: loved Grace, got a little better as I worked my way though 30 reps. Love the explosiveness of the movement.

Future: Need to work on my split jerk technique and I think I will start to incorporate C&J's into my warm ups.

Previously, Grace with dumbbells in 14:28 (2 @ 2x35# DB, 14 @ 2x30# DB, 14 @ 2x25# DB) on 2008-01-29
Grace with dumbbells (2x30# DB) in 14:43 on 2007-09-21 (363 days and 29 pounds ago).

Whew ... finally back.

Got too busy, worked too hard, got sick, lost about 12lb. Been out of action since September 2nd.

Grace is my first come-back workout. Taking it easy, so only 40.5kg (~90lb) on the bar.

5:33 - ha ha, still a PB. Last "Grace" with same load took 8:28! That was on the weekend of The Crossfit Games.

Nice to be back. Looking forward to a cruisy 5k tomorrow. Have learned my lesson about pushing too hard too fast!

Warm Up: CFWU + HSPU 3 sets 15 reps per set + 5 Bar Muscle Ups.

WOD: Grace 25:10

135lb Clean and Jerk: Did full squat cleans and a regular jerk (no split). Did singles working on form. I had about the same time as the last time I did Grace with some huge differences. First of all, I am 20 pounds lighter and second, I had great form today and did full squat cleans as compared to power cleans last time. I cannot drop the weights at the gym that I worked out at today so controlling the weight back down wastes lots of time and energy, but it does make you stronger. I am also now using the hook grip and really whipping my elbows through actively on the clean so that the bar is resting fully on my shoulders and my fingers are there to just baby sit the bar. Today was a great day even though the time was quite slow. Next time I would like to get it under 20 minutes.

Cool Down: 1 bar muscle up and then 5k.

Finally got the confidence to go rx'd despite 1RM shoulder press being 125#. I paced myself the whole way and actually could have pushed harder.

11:30. Squat cleans. Try to reduce breaks. Generally 2-3 after about 10 reps.

Get weight back on delts as far as possible makes it easier to stay on heels.
