Let's get Filthy!

Comment #1 - Posted by: AllisonNYC._23/5'2/126 at July 19, 2008 4:51 PM

Walking lunge....is 50 steps 25 Left and 25 Right, or 50 of each?

Comment #2 - Posted by: Wes at July 19, 2008 4:51 PM

that's filthier than a Subic Bay....

Comment #3 - Posted by: Wally at July 19, 2008 4:53 PM

Ouch! Unless I want to spend the afternoon in the hospital, I think I'm gonna have to cut this one in half. There's no way I could finish this!

Comment #4 - Posted by: Seiji/30/199 at July 19, 2008 4:53 PM

43/6'1"/185

did the push up, ring dip, push press wod today.

7 rounds + 15 push ups + 7 ring dips

really wanted 8 rounds but the ring dips were singles by the last round.

i like the 50.

Comment #5 - Posted by: ken c at July 19, 2008 4:57 PM

#2 Wes-

50 steps walking lunge works out to 25 each leg.

Comment #15 - Posted by: J at July 19, 2008 5:39 PM

I am currently deployed and have just gotten two of my soldiers into crossfit. I've been doing it for 6 months. I feel I have a fair amount of athletic/exercise knowledge and experience plus I have the benefit of the comment board if I have any questions, so I feel I won't lead them astray. I am doing the WOD's as RX'd (usually) in the morning by myself (so I know what they're in for) and then doing the BrandX scaled version with them at night. Only 2 days in and they already hate me, but they're sticking with it. One soldier is 72in, 258lbs with 27% body fat. He cannot pass an Army PT test. I have 4 weeks to work with him before I go on leave and plan to do a PT test and weigh & tape right before I go. Wish us luck on getting those numbers down and his PT score up. (He needs it to get promoted).

Comment #16 - Posted by: The Good Shepherd at July 19, 2008 5:46 PM

As an instructor, that simplified anatomy & phys lesson rocks!

Revolutionary progress is often simple, like the concept of planting seeds in rows. Once implemented, it is impossible to imagine a time when it was done any other way.

Comment #17 - Posted by: TnT in MD at July 19, 2008 5:49 PM

2 questions:

1) Is it ok to change the order a little?

2) Is it ok to go through the routine twice with sets of 25?

I am looking at getting a traditional boxing bag for my husband (and myself) who does crossfit and also is an avid runner. I am wondering what anyone who recommend for weight. I see some are 40 pounds, some are 70 or 80. Is it best to just get the heaviest one? He is at a cage fight tonight so I thought I would post a comment to see if anyone could help. Thanks for any help.

#25, i want to say 1 pood equals around 35 lbs. Check out the FAQ section of this site and I know its on there some where. Cannot wait to do this, I'm really scared of the knees to elbows, my abs are weak!

Comment #28 - Posted by: JohnFahn at July 19, 2008 6:32 PM

I have been doing crossfit for about 4 months now, but I just looked at the nutrition guidelines today. Is there a set amount of daily calories that is recommended or simply try avoiding eating processed foods?

Comment #29 - Posted by: Steve at July 19, 2008 6:37 PM

Shamp - from the FAQ:

Russian measure used for kettlebells; common ones: 1 pood =36 lbs; 1.5 pood = 54 lbs; 2 pood = 72 lbs. Approx db equivalents are 35, 55, 70

Mike - no and no. (If you want to do the 50 as rx'ed.)

But I sympathise with your attempts to tackle this monster in a more approachable way!

Comment #39 - Posted by: Jake B at July 19, 2008 7:32 PM

Welcome to the Filth!

If you're doing this as Rx'ed, it's 50 of each exercise (25 lunges each leg) in the order listed for time, otherwise you're scaling. Feel free to scale, but don't consider a scaled time a PR over an unscaled one.

Try to work your way up to 50 of each exercise, but scale to a number that takes you 20-40 min at your fastest pace (yeah, it's a huge range, but most people underestimate the burpees).

Subs -
Swing a Dumbbell if you don't have a kettlebell.

Supermans work similar muscles to back extensions, although they lack the glute-ham hit.

Weighted thrusters are essentially the same motion as wall-ball with less of the power element.

And most people sub tuck jumps for double-unders, but once you start listening to Buddy Lee's advice on how to DU, you'll realize how incredibly different these 2 are.

You can get one H-E-double hockeysticks of a workout by subbing, it just won't be the same WOD. So, this might be a good chance to check out a local affiliate or pool resources with another CFer.

Study each of these movements in the videos or with a trainer before you try the whole WOD for time. Remember to warm-up before hand & stretch after. Get some.

4 full round plus 15 PUs & 3 dips

Working a couple days behind, did both of the last 2 earlier today, about a 10 min break in between

Comment #46 - Posted by: Willis - Nashville at July 19, 2008 7:56 PM

Is there a set of exercises to completely replace the kettlebell workouts? I've done lots of different kettlebell workouts, under the supervision of kettlebell instructors who said I was doing the exercises correctly. I usually used more weight than the instructors, but I never really got anything out of it. It just seems like too much momentum. I never got tired or got a burn. I'd have to go for a long time before tiring. The only thing that ever felt like exercise is the turkish get-ups.

And kb swings with a dumbbell just annoy the crap out of me. Is there any set of workouts I can do other than kbs? I just don't get anything out of them.

Comment #52 - Posted by: JC at July 19, 2008 8:54 PM

#48 Don't tread I can't say I have the same problem as you and, frankly, I'm lost. Do more weight? Do more reps? Are you just doing swings or do you also do KB snatches?

Maybe you have a talent that needs to be addressed here.

good gosh fedor is a monster!

Comment #55 - Posted by: ken c at July 19, 2008 9:34 PM

Gaucoin, I could do more reps, but with the momentum in the swings, those types of kb exercises just don't seem worth the time it takes to get a good burn. The kb exercises that don't use momentum are great, like the get-ups or push-ups and row, I can do those with dumbbells and they hurt pretty fast.

But the kb exercises with momentum just don't do it for me, and I was wondering if there was any good replacement we could do (my wife doesn't care for them either). The swinging kbs just aren't worth the time for us.

Comment #56 - Posted by: Dont tread at July 19, 2008 9:48 PM

#57 Dont tread,

How heavy is your kettlebell? If you're not already trying 2 pood, I'd give that a shot. Swinging 72 pounds all the way to almost directly overhead tends to pack a pretty big core strength (as well as grip) demand.

Comment #57 - Posted by: MB at July 19, 2008 9:58 PM

Comment #59 - Posted by: ryan at July 19, 2008 10:13 PM

I use a tire chain bag, which amounts to a big purse, with a 20 lb or 30lb anchor and small 2.5-5 lb plates to make "kettlebells" of different weights. Works well.

The answers are No and No. If you are planning to do the wod as prescribed then they go in order, and you complete all of the reps of one before moving on to the next. If you have to scale, then by all means do what you are capable of, no shame there. If a bad time or pride are your issue... suck it up buttercup.

Comment #63 - Posted by: john brown at July 19, 2008 10:31 PM

# 65

Thanks for the response.

A bad time is not really my issue. It's just that some of the exercises I'll have to do in my condo, and some of the exercises I have to do 3 floors down in the gym on the first floor. lol. Kind of weird to run up and down each set, but I guess it's just more work which is good.

TODAY'S FAQ
==========================================
WOD = Filthy Fifty

Sorry for the late post. Basically see buretto #41. You can use Control-F to search his post or other things on the page. To rehash. You can modify the workout, but if you do, it's not really the same WOD. The WOD is to finish 50 repetitions of exercise A, before proceeding to 50 reps of exercise B, ... you get the idea.

For time:
50 Box jump, 24 inch box
50 Jumping pull-ups
50 Kettlebell swings, 1 pood
Walking Lunge, 50 steps
50 Knees to elbows
50 Push press, 45 pounds
50 Back extensions
50 Wall ball shots, 20 pound ball
50 Burpees
50 Double unders

Buretto and others have already covered the basics. If you have any questions on form, or other substitutions, you can review the videos on the "Exercises and Demos" page, or the FAQ.

I have yet to do this workout, and I'm not going to do it this time, sadly... due to scheduling constraints and my access to my gym, I'm on the 5 and 2 schedule and we only do longer workouts like this on S.O.S. days, which I can't ever get to because I'm asleep. But hopefully it's within my fairly near future... I want to see what all the fuss is about.

Well this was tough!!!!! I thought I could do it all but unfortunetly I didn't. However, this was only my 4th WOD ever! I don't feel too bad, should I????

I had to sub Supermans for Back Ext., 45lbs Thrusters for Wall Ball Shots and 35lbs DB Swing for Kettlebell swing.

I only completed
50 Box jump, 24 inch box
50 Jumping pull-ups
50 35LBS DB Swing
Walking Lunge, 50 steps
50 Knees to elbows
50 Push press, 45 pounds
50 Supermans
20 45lbs Thrusters

Time: 34:08 (I had to throw up, or else I would have finished)

I am not discouraged, I will continue. I can't wait till this comes around again to see how much I improve!

Thanks Coach!

supermen for back ex
45 lb. thrusters for wall ball

Comment #90 - Posted by: CapeCodDave at July 20, 2008 6:27 AM

#88 - Don't get discouraged. I think your time is very respectable. This is a tough workout and many beginners either sub a lot of exercises or scale back the reps their first time through. Attempting to take on the full Rx'd workout is very admirable :) !

Just did this at my GloboGym. I probably wasted about 1:30 walking back and forth between exercises because the equipt. is so spread out. My time was 24:55. Did OK with everything except the KTE's and Burpees. After the first 10 I had to break these into sets of 5. I really suck at these 2 exercises!!!

If I only have dumbells and no kettlebells, do I use the same weight, or more/less with a dumbell?
By the way: 150 single unders as a replacement for 50 DU, or 50 tuck jumps as replacement-My time would have been several minutes faster with these replacements. Today was my 5th day since I started CF a couple of months ago, and suddenly these DU were much easier. By a rope if you dont have one, believe me its much harder than the subs.

When I first saw this WOD, I said there is NO WAY I can do this one! I have been doing CF since April and have had to sub or scale almost all of the work outs. But my first thought was quickly followed by a second, that said you are a CF chick...you can do this!! I did sub on the knees to elbows (going as far up as I could), GM's for back ext., thrusters for WBS, and 4x the rope for DU's. I finished in 36:12 alot of which was burpee time. I did the PU, dip, PP yesterday and ran 3 miles.

I'm am an idiot because I didn't eat anything before I started. This led to long breaks within sets and between sets so I could stop feeling like I was about to puke. I got through everything but only managed 20 double unders at the end.

Time was approx. 40 minutes. If I energize properly next time I know I can get around 35. But I'm not looking forward to this one again haha.

Subbed 1 pood kettlebell with a 40pd free weight.

Subbed wall ball with doing squats holding a 20pds weight out straight.

Today I turn 34. 34/m/201

I weighed 201 this morning. Last year on my birthday I weighed 260 and the waist on my pants was 10 inches larger, that's right 10 inches, I used to wear a 44 inch waist in my pants now all my pants are 34's, same as when I was an athlete in college.

I am glad we had a "filthy fifty" on my birthday

Everything was as rx'd except I used a heavier kettlebell. 1 pood = 36 lbs (16kg) I used the 20kg kettlebell.

32:18....

I smoked my last recorded as rx'd filty fifty by 12 minutes. The huge improvement for me was the knees to elbows and double unders. I have been practicing them so I now I can fly through both those movements.

Thank you Crossfit

Cross Fit Testimony

39.5 yr female CrossFitting for 2 years, zoning since May. I just did my 4th sprint triathlon with CrossFit as my main training. Ive been in the pool twice (i have a swimming background), on my bike twice (to toughen my seat), and I run the local charatiy 5k's. I took 1st overall female, cut 1 minute off my time, and 12th against the men. My 2 Crossfit friends did it with me and have trained similar and they both cut their personal times as well. CrossFit works, the zone works, and my one thought to calm my nerves was...."this cant hurt any worse than Murph"

Have fun with the 50, I'll do it later this week.

6 min 20k kb snatch set - 45R/42L. Hand switch at 3 minutes.

5 minute break.

WOD: 30:29. I decided to do this one as strictly as possible... I was interested to see how it affected my time and how it made me feel.

50 20" box jumps - did not count if both feet did not land completely on box
50 jumping pullups - chest had to touch bar each rep to count
50 35# kb swings - bell had to stop directly overhead to count
50 walking lunges - knee had to touch ground and full hip extension to count
50 KTE - knees had to touch forearms to count
50 push presses - full stop at rack and full stop overhead to count; no 1/4 thrusters
50 extensions - no momentum, complete stop to count
50 20# wallball - had to sub 25# sandbag throws to 8' ceiling; no 10' walls at the apartment
50 burpees - chest/thighs touching floor during pushup, vertical + lateral jump with overhead clap (jump over 12"x12" bag on floor)
50 doubleunders - still can not do one, subbed knees to chest tuck jumps

Adding the chest to bar during the jumping pullups and jumping over the bag during burpees made this WOD a complete bear. That extra work on the burpees had me fighting a side stitch after rep 18 and it killed my tuck jumps too. I definitely felt those additions...I will make these permanent fixtures in this workout.

As Rx: 29:46

3:11 slower than PR. Had a solid PR going until hitting a brick wall at, perhaps fittingly, the wall ball shots. Spent about 4 min just fighting off Mr. Pukie. I guess that's what a day of high humidity, poor eating, and little sleep will do to you. Felt like it was my first day doing CF. Which is also fitting considering…

Today marks my one year anniversary of doing CF - WOD #275. My initial intent was to find a better conditioning program for my martial arts training. I decided to try CF for a month. But of course once started, there was no turning back. I haven’t missed a WOD yet. What I found was more than just a superior conditioning program, but a methodology that has provided a strong basis for psychophysical understanding. My sincere gratitude is extended to Greg and Lauren Glassman for providing this service and their insightful wisdom. Thanks also to all the coaches and athletes that make CF one of the best resources for fitness I’ve ever come across.

Just for fun - total Rx pull-ups (not counting today, warm-ups, extra work, etc.) I did over the past year: 6,461.

3.5 mile run in 90 degrees with insane humidity, followed shortly after by filthy fifty:

52:22

subbed tuck jumps for double unders

subbed 35# dumbbell swings for kettlebell

medicine ball was a little lighter than 20#s, probably 15ish? the options are 15 or 25 so i alternate between the two (last FGB used 25)

lost a ton of time on knees to elbows, never done these before, was doing them two at a time with rest in between (realized at the end that one at a time with only a couple secs in between would be faster and more in keeping with the metcon spirit of it. oh well.

oh, and i HATE burpees. at least they are directly relevant to improving surfing performance, that realization is the only thing that gets me through them......

I'll agree about the remix or whatever it was in the video, however given the songs that were mixed up they almost fit well together, but what ever.
Question I'm now at a point where I'm not struggling to get through the WOD and I really want to improve my times etc. Usually on a workout with like today I'll do a set of 10 (rest about 15-20sec) and then another. If I'm looking to improve my times I was wondering if people have found better to increase the number in a set and keep rest the same or to try and decrease the time I rest between sets?

i have been doing crossfit for 7 weeks. for my age, i feel my fitness level is above average at least. my weights and times are accptable, although i know there is room for improvement. that said, i must comment on some of the times posted. i feel some of the posted times are unrealistic. maybe i am not figuring my times correctly.
using todays wod as an example: 22:00, 25:00, 19:00? with these posted times you are talking about less than 3 minutes per exercise @ 50 reps each. and that does not include rest periods or walking from station to station.
another example is the 10k run from last week. i recall seeing times in the low 20:00s and even a 19:00. were these people running 6.2 miles. those are world class times or better.
do i include rest periods in my final time, or just working time?
PLEASE! i understand there are people who are in better shape than i. it is not my intention to bash anyone. being fairly new to crossfit, i want to make sure i have a full understanding of every aspect of crossfit.
thanks.

Wow... I havent blasted this bad boy in a while...

My Favorite Chipper... But definately not an "Any Asshole" workout.

I am really trying to not let my male competitive nature and my willingness to kill for points get in the way of my form on the exercises. With that said, My Knees to Elbows died out on me after 20 reps.. and i finished them up doing a hanging leg lift/knee tuck because i just couldnt get my damn knees up there. I dont have a 20lbs med ball.. nor a 10 spot to throw to.. so we took a 25lbs plate and did deep thurstder with them.. that burned.

Im working hard on double unders... rocking 4 singles and as many doubles as i can do before i mess up. But I did an even 100 including my singles just to try getting the same desired effect of 50 double unders.

23:15 PR!

my best time was 27:52 thats a nice improvement.

Lost track of time after wall ball because I laid in the pool after DU's. I was at 25'00 after those and I had hit my wall. I could only do 5-7 in a row. I blew through the stuff before though. Check times in log to compare for next time. Skipped burpees because I ran out of gas and wanted to get through the double unders. Those were a lot better this time. Could do 5-7 consecutively. Beat was about every 3rd skip. Sometimes was able to do every one as DU for about 5 in a row.

Not feeling filthy today so I did a 5K loop close to my house in 22:20.

I mapped it out online so it could be a little short but it sure was hilly and winding. There was a painfully long inline for what felt like close to a kilometer but, fortunately, it lead to a longer but less steep downhill back towards my house. The mental push was a little lacking but physically I felt pretty good, left calf held up but is tightening by the minute now. Hopefully I can get back to the daily WODs soon.

#176 Mike. Start stop watch at first rep of first exercise, stop the clock after last rep of last exercise. That is your time (rest is included). Every now and then there is a time posted that doesn't make sense, whether a typo or forgetting to post a mod to the WOD. Don't sweat other folks times, as there are some real amazing performances that CFers put up. Sub-20 min filthy fifty is certainly attainable by many on these boards. Someday we'll get there too :-) The key to the super times seems to be that the CF elite just never stop moving. I wrote that on my cheat sheet today - Just Keep Moving. Throttle the cycle time for some exercises as necessary, but generally better to slow the cycle time and keep pushing than to go to failure and then rest.

@ #176

When I have for time events, I start the stop watch and it does not stop until I have completed the last rep of the last exercise. There are no delays subtracted for my breaks, walking from one side of the gym to the other for the next exercise, or just plain wimping out during the exercise.

However, I have only been doing Crossfit since mid April, so I am by no means an authority on it. But the way I look at it is that I am really competing against myself. So as long as I do it the same way each time, I can track my personal progress. I know some people at my work that will break up a work out such as Angie into 25 of each exercise 4 times. They do the same total number of reps that I do, but just that slight modification gives them times that are 10 minutes faster than what I can do when I do it 100/100/100/100.

So while I sometimes doubt some of the fantastic numbers I see....it is in the no harm, no foul category to me.

yes, the fast times are likely for real. the filthy fifty was the 2nd CF wod I ever did and i did 1/2 reps in about 45min... 10 months later i am doing all 50 reps of each in 27min and some change. i also thought i was "fit" as a runner and triathlete prior to starting CF, but this is a whole different beast. as your strength and stamina improve your times will decrease rapidly. i don't know about the fast 10K times the other day, but people are doing this wod in very fast times... straight through, no rest and fast pace. also pay attention to the subs people make as that can make a difference in their time. keep training hard and keep us posted on your progress!

I completely agree with you...the excessively low times are a joke...not physically possible, even with poor form.

My suggestion is to not even look at others times other than a general grading of where you might want to target (age/wt/size) and use this primarily for a personal log of your work.

Sub'd supermans for back extensions, and the box was definitely higher than 24'', but that should make up for a slightly lower wall ball target. 50 Park Bench Jumps
50 Jumping Pullups
50 Dips(sub for swings)
50 Lunges
50 Knees to Elbows
50 Push Ups(sub for Press)
50 Back Ext.
50 Air Squats(sub for Wall Ball)
50 Burpees
50 DU's

43:25, new PR! Beat my old time by about a minute. The dips were slow, I think I would have had a much better time as rx'd.

used 35# db for swings
40# db thrusters for wallballs

Mike #176:

Nice work on your first "Filthy Fifty"! You are correct--start the clock before rep. 1 and stop it after last rep. Rest and transition is included as Wes points out.

This CF is powerful stuff and the longer you do it the faster you will go. Prior to a shoulder injury I did this nearly as Rx'd in 28 and change at age 47. I have seen video of the CF monsters and recently saw them perform in person at the Games. Despite Bill #206's skepticism it is not a stretch at all for some of these folks to go sub-20. OPT, AFT, Speal, Anthony B, Dutch, Pat Barber, etc. are more than capable. The bar is very, very high.

Having said that I agree entirely with the two responses above: CF is you vs. you. Stick around; do the WOD, and be prepared to be astounded at your improvement the next time this comes around.

Welcome aboard to you as well. Fasten your seatbelt.

the short times on this workout are probably correct as I have had the experience in seeing many people do it and have done it myself. I think my first attempt was nearly 40 minutes then down to about 27min with much room for improvement over the last three exercises. the k2e are the point that get slow for me and I am usually hitting them at about the 8-9min mark. It is also a test of will as many people who think they are in good shape crumble when the wall balls hit.

Comment #243 - Posted by: Intent at July 20, 2008 2:15 PM

I'm not gonna lie. That unhealthy rest day I had killed the workout for me. I did everything as required...but about puked when I got to burpees. I did 10 burpees and I hit the wall hard.

You know that feeling when everything starts getting dark..haha. Like you're getting choked out..

So, I didn't finish the filthy. I feel very disgusted with myself! But I will hit it harder and not treat a rest day, like a "REST" day.

When i got to the burpees, the time was 34min. I was suckin today.

The rest of the WOD was relatively easy, up until wall ball...murder!!

Until next time, I won't quit.

Hey mike,
Just to clarify, those comments regarding the world class times for the 10K were in complete jest. They were in response to a prior comment made by someone suggesting that those of us who run 10k's slower than 40 minutes are not training hard enough. That wasn't recieved well, so those comments about the 20 minute 10k's were actually jokes. Stick with this, you will progress. It's hard to imagine doing today's wod any faster, but you will someday, if you stay with the program. That's the beauty of it!

Comment #247 - Posted by: J at July 20, 2008 2:33 PM

doing this in the heat (90+ degrees in the shade with 100+ humidity)...didnt help. it was hard to breathe in the shade.

subbed -
40lb db swings for 1 pood kb.
knee raises for kte
all but 20 of the ohp were strict instead of push press
standing goodmorning with hands behind neck for back ext
and 45lb bar thrusters for wall ball.

only did 10 burpees and no DU. this was the exact way i did it 4 months ago, as my only 2nd week of cf. the heat was unbearable...so i wanted to quit early. but at least i got to compare to before.

Howdy,
So why don’t scaled workouts get cool names too?

The Dirty Thirty Five
35 Box jump, 24 inch box
35 Jumping pull-ups
35 35lbs BD swings
Walking Lunge, 35 steps a leg (leg 1, right 1 etc)
35 Regular Sit-ups
35 Push press, 45 pounds
35 Back extensions
35 Wall ball shots, have no idea how heavy, wasn’t labeled, 10lbx? Maybe? Having no target kinda sucked
35 Burpees
35 Standard Jump Rope Jumps
39:54
The pull ups and the burpees killed me, my lower body runs with The Pack, but my arms belong sometimes with the buttercups. I punch below my weight but I’m working on it. This was a true crossfit experience, i.e. people looked at me funny and my heart felt like it was going to explode and I was dizzy at times(I blame the zone). But someday I too will be able to write, "As rx'd..."

22/m, 43:39 >.<

Was doing so well, with about 6 minutes elapsed, but the elbow-to-knees killed me, couldn't hold myself up to do 50 straight and killed a lot of time there, that and the need to run around my house to complete the workout killed my time. Alwell, more to improve on.

Much thanks for posting workouts like this ;D

No Filthy 50 for me today!

Just attended the Running and Endurance Cert held at CrossFit Atlanta this weekend. I had such a fabulous time! Brian and Carl were very well-researched and I benefited tremendously from all the information presented. I thought I was an okay runner before, although, I did tend to avoid the longer distances. I feel faster and lighter and SO much more comfortable. I'm so excited now, I came home and ordered some new shoes! (next I'm getting one of those torture rollers, hahaha!)

Thanks to Dan McDougald for hosting this cert and Brian and Carl. I can't wait to fix all my clients with these drills!

YAY POSE!

No filthy for me, still reluctent to work my knee that hard. Biked to the beach this am for a swim, but the water was frigid! Mid July and it had to be 62 degrees! I swam no more than 2-300 yards for fear of hypothermia. And I want to give a shout out to Kelli Moore, no hangs ups about a super fast time, no sir, but she's doing each movement with strict attention to form, chest to bar, hand clap over head on the burpees, knee touch on the lunges, etc. IMO, she is what CF is all about.

#284 Shaneb - I definitely feel your pain about the globo gyms. And it's not fun when you get all your 'stations' set up, and someone has to go get in your way!

Anyway..I was actually kinda nervous about starting out on this one (first time!), so put it off longer than I should, and ending up not being able to finish due to the gym closing, boo ;_;

For time:
35 box jumps
35 jumping pull-ups
35 KB swings 35#
35 walking lunges
35 unanchored sit-ups
35 push presses 45#
35 back extensions
35 thrusters 45#
10 burpees
10 double-unders

33:00

So I had about 10 min left till the gym closed with both burpees and double-unders left. Since I'm not terribly fond of the burpees (heh), I decided to go for equal amounts of the last two exercises. Double-unders have been getting alot easier.. thrusters (and of course burpees) were the slowest.

Like everybody else says, it's just you vs. you. But, I also completely agree that some of the times that people post are more than a little suspicious. The elite may find those numbers attainable but for the most part...I think not. I also find it kind of funny that Bingo chooses to point out that he did it, "Almost as RX'd" in 28 and change. Um, I don't know about you but it's usually right near the end of the WOD that I find the most difficult so from now on maybe I'll just cut it short and say, "I finished in x amount of time but it was almost as RX'd."

50 Box jump, 24" - catastrophic failure on improvised box jump. Both shins and one knee now purple. Subbed 100 jumps on a 'step'.
50 Jumping pull-ups - gravitron - offset at 55lbs
50 Kettlebell swings, 1 pood - 35lb dumbbell
Walking Lunge, 50 steps
50 Knees to elbows - knees as high as I could get them on that 'roman chair' thing
50 Push press, 45 pounds - 35lbs x10, then 25lbs x 40
50 Back extensions - x10, then had to sub supermans x40
50 Wall ball shots, 20 pound ball - 5Kg ball
50 Burpees
50 Double unders - not able to do this - subbed 100 'regular'

54:50 Goal was under 40 (gotta have goals)

Today I turn 34. 34/m/201

I weighed 201 this morning. Last year on my birthday I was 260 and the waist on my pants was 10 inches larger, that's right 10 inches, I used to wear 44 inch waist pants now all my pants are 34's.

A filthy fifty on my Brithday I could not be happier.

rx'd 32:18

The only difference is I scaled up and used a heavier kettlebell. 1 pood = 16 kgs I used the 20kg kettlebell.

I smoked my last recorded as rx'd filty fifty by 12 minutes. The huge improvement for me was the knees to elbows, double unders and wall balls. I have been practicing those movements so I now I can fly through them with little problems.

Rauterki #299:

I was, am, and always will be "understrong". I am also a little limited by what my gym has in the way of equipment. I post my subs, and I post my rationale for the subs if there is any particular one in force (eg. I have a torn rotator cuff and can no longer do a push-up, hence squat-thrusts with jump and clap today vs. true burpees).

FWIW, in the context of #176, at age 47, roughly 1.5 years into CF, at 151 lbs. I did this WOD in "28 and change" with a 20" box(all that was available), a 30# DB (see above understrong), and splitting the KTE. I noted this above, and elaborate here, in order to provide context to my contention that sub-20 minutes is not outlandish for athletes who are bigger, stronger, and younger than yours truly (old, short, light, understrong, and a slave to gravity to boot). If I had all of the equipment available at that time my "as Rx'd" time would likely have been mid-30's.

Right smack dab in the middle of the Bell curve, where I have quite happily landed after 2.5 years here at Crossfit...

I just want to say, being one of the sub 25 minute times posted today... that i understand where you are comming from in this.

If you have gone to a seminar you will see that they emphasize being equally bad ass at all aspects of fitness. I agree and am really busting my butt to get those things even.. I lack in a lot of ways and have some really good strengths... one of my biggest is my cardio endurance. I used to weight 400lbs and running has been one of my favorite ways to lose weight... until crossfit. I still run 4 times a week. My cardio is through the roof... and i rarely gas out on exercises. My Muscular enbdurance on the other hand and my upper body strength and endurance is another study.. i got through the first 8 exercises in 13 minutes... and then my uperbody gave out making it take me 10 minutes to get through my burpees and my double unders.

We all have strengths and weaknesses.. thats why we crossfit.. you exploit those... and get rid of our shortcomings... well at least thats why i do. I dread every time pullups are on the WOD... because i still weight over 200lbs.. and have trouble with caring my body weight.

but I do them as hard as i can.. i fight for it.. and i dont cheap myself. I hope everyone else with a sub 25 minute time posts with as much honesty as i am trying to show.

Bingo #323

I have to say that I am more than impressed with your newfound humility. A few months ago I asked the simple question of: Is the WOD enough for most folks or do they also do something else?

Your seemingly smug answer of, "Well, as you lie there on the ground trying not to choke on your own tongue, gasping for air and waiting for your eyes to stop bugging out from your head, ask youself if that was enough." That's not verbatim but it's more than close. Now I see that you are posting times as being, "Almost as RX'd" To that I say, "Good job at even attempting to do this workout as most would find it more than daunting." I was not taking a shot at you nor trying to belittle your achievement.

I have noticed that most of the elite or even above average posters on this site also engage in some other form of physical activity. So, it would seem that the WOD is not enough but merely a part (albeit a large one) in their level of fitness. I will stand by my statement that some of the times posted here are a little suspicious (but, what do I really care???) unless some substitutions are made. There are a select few that have truly reached a level of fitness that can be considered as "Mind boggling" while there are many who have a level that is way, way, above average.

And, FWIW I did the Fifty in a little over 28 mins. as RX'd and am now a member of the 40 year old club. I have also noticed that gravity is now a little stronger than it was 5 years ago (how the hell did that happen), a 45lb barbell must really weigh in the neighborhood of 75lbs and the soreness accompanying the WOD lasts just a little longer.....

Out of curiosity; Is your shoulder problem a result of trying to do things too quickly and getting out of form or something else entirely?

Ref #176, et al - I log my times elsewhere, for a couple of reasons. Mainly, I can track my own progress more easily, and I can go into detail, and the log is, well, all me, with no other data to wade through. I don't think lying on the times is out of control, but there are some suspicious numbers that pop up now and then. Especially for runs. I've laughed out loud a couple times reading 5 & 10K times...but I try not to let it bug me.

Now that the first 6 mos. are out of the way...how do you feel? I'm just curious because I can tell you that after my first Crossfit Challenge I was feeling mighty humbled. I thought I was in pretty good shape until I was told to do 50 pullups, 50 pushus and 50 un-anchored situps for time. The pushups and pullups were a breeze but the dang situps almost wrecked me.

"As Rx'd": I believe an agreed upon definition would be doing the WOD exactly as written on the main page without substitutions for requested exercises or scaling of either weight or reps.

"Almost as Rx'd: As used in my earlier post, to mean done with listed subs or scales that approach, but do not reach, the WOD exactly as listed. Perhaps I should not have tried for brevity in the original post and should have listed the exact substitutions utilized, as I did in my second post. I performed 50 reps of each exercise, alterations noted, for a total of 500 reps both today and on the "almost as Rx'd" example.

"Eyes bulging, ..." Yup, sounds like me. Out of nothing more than curiosity, and with zero editorial intent, at 28:00 as Rx'd will you need more exercise today?!

I tore my rotator cuff doing push-ups during a warm-up on uneven ground at a playground--probably too many too fast while too cold. Not being bright enough to realize that I had begun the process I completed the deed in the bench-press round of 8 on "Linda" at 0.75BW some days later.

Bingo,

Don't know what happened with my computer so if this gets posted twice..sorry about that.

I would say that your definition of "As RX'd" is spot on. Here is a little something I noticed though: When I watch the demo's for the WOD I see that for the most part the intent is focused on the fitness aspect of whatever is prescribed. But, when I watched whatever portions of the 2008 games I could find, I saw that some of the competitors used a very liberal interpretation of the exercise/rules. That is to say there may be two very distinct versions of the exercises: one is used for fitness and one is used for competition. Not saying that anybody was cheating because God knows I didn't have the guts to step into the ring. But, when it comes to competition people will find a way to win and that is why I feel that some post somewhat suspicious times. If it truly were just you vs. you then nobody would post their times right?

I honestly have no problem with people posting their ludicrous but honest times. They worked hard for their rewards and should be damn proud of what they have accomplished. I wish I would have found Crossfit 20 years ago so I could hang with them.....

Oh, I almost forgot: No way for more exercise today. Surfed this morning for a couple hours and did the WOD in the afternoon. Shoulders are smoked. Hope I'm not too tired to lift my beer later.....And, I am sorry to hear about your shoulder. I wouldn't want you getting shaky with the laser in the midst of something important. So, when you say that you're in ridiculous shape do you mean that you're shaped like an amoeba or....wait, never mind, I get it. Keep on keepin' on dude.

Oh my, our new friend, Mike #176, and his supporter, Bill, should probably try a few WODs before they start doubting experienced CrossFitter's times. It would also probably help if Mike didn't do extra reps of jumping pull-ups and burpees. The first time I did the filthy fifties my time was probably about 30-35 minutes but this year I did my first sub-20 so if a flailing goof like me can do it the elite folks sure as heck can.

Stick with it and watch the same thing happen to you!

M/35/5'10/185 - Crossfitting for 2 months+

Tried to do 2 WOD's in a day today...not quite ready. Here's what I did:

Workout #1 6:00 am:

25 pull ups
50 sit ups
40 bar dips
50 meter sprints/10 push ups (x4)

Workout #2 2:30 pm...tried Filthy 50:

50 Box jump, 24 inch box
50 Jumping pull-ups
50 Kettlebell swings, (subbed with 35# dumbbell)
Walking Lunge, 50 steps
50 Knees to elbows
50 Push press, 45 pounds...

...that's as far as I got when the heat in my garage started to get overwhelming (it was about 96° here today in central CA)

So I didn't finish the filth and was pretty diappointed, but I had to listen to my body. Can't wait to get some more tomorrow!

Nice job to everyone who finished!

50 burpees (chest to floor everytime)

i will continue to do what i have done for the last seven weeks and perform each wod with the hunger that will allow myself to post one of those "unrealistic" times.

Me: 42yo/M/5'10"/173lbs/BF 11.0%

Warm Up: some stretching and I ran 7K earlier in the day just because it was a nice day :>)

WOD: The filthy fifty: 41:32

I did this one at my house with Shane who smoked me:

50 Box jump, 24 inch box: Subbed jumping onto large truck tire about 22" high

50 Jumping pull-ups: Jumping Pull Ups with rings. from locked out at the bottom to rings in armpits.

50 Kettlebell swings, 1 pood: used a 44lb kettlebell

Walking Lunge, 50 steps: Knee to ground

50 Knees to elbows: Yes much fun on these, I broke them down to sets of around 5 at a shot.

50 Push press, 45 pounds: Used the same kettle bell 44lbs.

50 Back extensions: legs inside big tractor tire. Those really zapped my back for sure.

50 Wall ball shots, 20 pound ball: Used 25lb basketball up to 12 foot target on tree, very special.

50 Burpees: Yea! Burpees!

50 Double unders: did one single one double for a total of 50 singles and 50 doubles.

All in All, pretty filthy. I love this...

Have Fun, Train Hard,

Billy

72 min.

Had to use 30-lb. DB instead of Kettleball.

The heaviest medicine ball that the YMCA had was a 5-lb. ball. I did 90 reps of these to help compensate for the weight difference.

I couldn't perform the Double unders for reps just yet. I will need some more practice. I did single, alternating leg skips with the jump rope instead. I also performed 75 skips per leg to help compensate for the substitution.

By the end of the workout, my endorphine level hit a PR!!

Finished in 34 minutes.

Subbed Tuck-Jumps for double unders. I think I did box jumps on a 26" box based on my shoe measuring. Knees to elbows were more like knees to above the naval.

That was a fun time in the gym. I wore a heather-gray shirt and watched as the light gray slowly lost the battle to the dark grey. After a long 30 minute battle, they light gray only occupied a small heart-shaped island in the middle of my shirt.

Okay, so I kind of messed this one up, but oh well, it was still a darn good workout. I forgot to do the knees to elbows and wall ball shots. I think the intensity went straight to my brain causing me to overlook these grueling exercises! :) Otherwise I scored 27:23 minus two exercises. Even with the two left out it was killer!

Complete misery.
Jacked up wrist, strained quads, coming off 1 week vacation layoff and crappy diet... burpees were more like "gingerly bend down, extend one than another leg and then do the push up part and bring the legs back and stand / jump clap. Repeat for fun."

oh hell

my second filthy fifty. my first CFT WOD was FF on March 4th, time of 54:40

This time:

20" box
100 single jump rope sub for double unders
44:40

started wall ball at 21min, began to break down during wall ball. hit the wall at burpees, had to break down in sets of 10, rest on my back for 1 min. fought off the clown multiple times. jump rope was a joke i was so spent.

flew all-nighters last two nights, might have had something to do with it, but still a 10min improvement, and a pretty quick recovery.

Been following crossfit religiously for about 3 weeks now. First post and filthy fifty. Modified as below.

50 Box jump, 24 inch box
50 Jumping pull-ups
50 dumbbell swings, 30 lbs
Walking Lunge, 50 steps
50 Knees to elbows (turned to assisted-jumping knees to elbows after about 10)

1/4 mile walk back to the hotel gym while holding 35 lb dumbbell to do the second half (the only "pullup bar" we have is a child's swing set in the park across the street. We got some great looks when we put the dumbbells in the metal detector at the hotel entrance.

50 Push press, 45 lbs
50 Swiss ball back extensions
50 Thrusters, 45 lbs
50 Burpees
50 Jumping knee to chest

Total time: 47:12

I think without the weighted walk, hotel check-in, and elevator ride down to the gym level I could've broken 40 min. But I'm going to be staying here for awhile, so might as well stay consistent.

RETROGRADE PERFORMANCE ALERT!

27:05 as Rx'd today. Last time was 24:19. I should have been under 20 since I can now double unders nearly unbroken and I've been hitting big PR's since March in everythign else.

Every exercise was broken up today when I should have been able to do most nearly unbroken - it only got worse as the WOD continued. My muscles just did not want to continue today. I did however, get my first 43 double unders unbroken.

Observations:
- Did a lot of travelling/rowing/workouts over the weekend and got little sleep. However, I thought the sleep was caught up yesterday
- Started new diet yesterday after eating pretty much whatever I wanted over the weekend. I was pretty strict Zone before that at 17 blocks and 2x fat. Yesterday, I started the Metabolic Diet. I don't know if I can do it long if the WOD feels like this!
- Heat; it is already 86 degrees and climbing outside

Hello! I am a trainer from MI and this was my very first CF workout but I made it through. I was equally scared and excited. This stuff is the real deal! I'm hooked. Surprisingly, the burpees weren't my troublespot (I actually enjoy doing those) but the push press and pull ups took the longest due to a previous shoulder injury but I did all 50 reps! Can't wait for tomorrows workout!!

as rx'ed well i thought at the time. My girlfriend was doing it and we wrote everything down for her, and i wrote down situps instead of knees to elbows, so in the midst of all my pain when i got to that part, i forgot and did situps. Maybe it was better this way, i was so dead in the end that i don't know if it would have mattered, haha. anyways

* Jumping pull-ups - the chair might've been too high.
* Substituted thrusters for wall-ball.
* Oops, also knees to elbows, did the wrong exercise. I jumped and touched my elbows with my knees.

As they want except for jumping pull-ups (they kill my shoulder for some reason) using kipping pull-up instead. Wish I could do more than 2-4 doubleunders at a time. It would shave some time of the total.

Was still a little beat down from a weekend beach ultimate tournament, travel, and poor sleep (camping) and wasn't sure if I was going to bonk on this or not. I haven't done the full 50 before (did it with 29 reps), so I tried to keep a nice and steady pace throughout. Time: 40:05

I had to alter the order to take advantage of open spots at the gym, and so I wouldn't annoy everyone running around like a crazy person. Most sets were broken up into 25-15-10. I had a lot of trouble with knees-to-elbows by the end. My burpees probably made me look less like an elite athlete, and more like a ragdoll flopping up and down. The time would have been better but my double-unders probably took almost 10 minutes as it was broken up into about 50 sets of 1 double-under.

Used a 1.5 pood KB because that's what I have.
Didn't feel like I had it in me today. I had to break the burpies up into 5's.
My neck/scapula spasmed on number 10 of the double unders of all things (all the more reason to hate them) so I finished with 100 singles.

Okay, that was hard. Thing is, the day before I was thinking, "I'll bet burpees are coming soon." Sure enough, my worst fears realized.

So here it is: 50 reps
14" jump box. 1st time, a bit intimidated.
Regular assisted pullups.
16kg kettlebell (most weight so far)
Walking lunges
Elbow Knees
Push press, 45 pounds
Back extensions
Wall ball shots, 20 pound ball
50 Burpees (I hate them, but won't let them conquer me)
200 speed singles (still suck at doubles)

Honestly, that was the most difficult one for me so far. Sweet.

Comment #637 - Posted by: sullinator at July 21, 2008 9:59 PM

Mods:
higher bench on jump pull-up (should have had to jump more)
first 10 kettlebell with 35 lbs the reest with 25 lbs
20 wall ball with 12 pound (see reason below)
25 burpees
100 single unders

Comments: Globo gym has heavier balls for wall ball, but won't let me use it without a trainer (are you kidding me???) Then doing the wall ball was really tough because they don't really have the space - next time will do thrusters instead.
Burpees were tough - never done them before
Can't do double unders yet but singles are much beter than the double bounce I used to do and could not believe I did 100 all in a row no rest.

Goals:
Took breaks on tens in many of sets - next time break at 25 if needed.
Do all the burpees.
Do at least 15 double unders.

Time: 50 minutes on the dot. Thought it would take an hour, but didn't do all wall balls and burpees...

65 minutes (32 yrs, 5' 6", & 164 lbs)

The second CrossFit workout I've tried, but:
- 20 pull ups (didn't jump)
- 10 lb wall ball (the heaviest medicine ball the gym had).

Second workout and I think I'm already addicted. Anyone else in Toronto?

Scaled down to 35 reps instead of 50.
35lb plate for swings.
45lb Thrusters for Wall Balls.
Tuck Jumps for DU.

Time: 37:15 .. first time ever doing this, it's only my third or fourth CF workout, wow... If this one pops up again after 4 or 6 weeks from now, I might have to try the 50 rep version!

Also, it was my first time ever doing KTE, these were mighty tough. Same for the Swings, I used a 35lb plate which taxed my thumbs a bit, had never done swings. What a great workout.

My first "Filthy Fifty", (3rd WOD ever) and
Wow....I suck.
55 minutes, and change...
With one modification:
Subbed 100 10# wall ball shots (no 20# ball).

The knees-to-elbows killed me - couldn't get all the way up, and I had to do them in sets of 5-8 then rest significantly for my forearms and hands to recover. Having never attempted one before, however, I guess I shouldn't be too hard on myself.

I had to do the double-unders one by painstaking one (again, I had never done one before).

Looking forward to trying again!
