SWEET VIDEO

Rowed 2600m Thats the longest I've ever stayed on a rower. Not so bad. I'm starting to like these outside workouts. Runs are much more fun on trails than dodging pedestrian traffic in the city. Nature isn't so bad. I like Arizona a lot.

Tonight were doing the squat workout from the other day. Fun stuff.

this looks like an awesome workout, can't wait to do it.

Has anybody here heard of this P90X workout? It's supposed to chisel your body in like 12 weeks or something like that. I think it's only purpose is to get a great body as fast as possible. It has no purpose of strengthening your body for functional movements, like crossfit. I tried explaining this to a friend who tried it who said it's a killer workout. I went into a bit more detail than this, but I couldn't get the point across. Is there any way of explaining to him why crossfit is much better? I'm going to get him to come down to Crossfit Pittsburgh with me soon to prove it to him, but I just want to explain to him the major differences. Thanks to anyone who responds.

Let me know what you find out. I have a friend doing the same thing. I know it's a whole lot of jumping around in your living room watching a video. I know they do a lot of curls too. Problem is he's VERY happy with the way he looks now and how much his endurance has improved (he's a soccer player). We gotta figure out what to tell these guys.

Maybe we should just have them do this WOD which I call Fran Practice.

#20, and #38

I checked out the P90x website, and remember seeing an infomercial about it. It combines light weights and high reps, basically like a step class with weights. A good workout to get you winded and ripped, but very much lacking in the strength department, from what I gather.

Excellent workout vid! When are we gonna see that one (scaled for the individual) for the WOD. I wanna do that. I will look like Freddy C. tho doing those double unders. Gotta work on those. You're not alone Freddy!

Comment #41 - Posted by: Murray/San Diego/M/31/5'10/185 at June 19, 2008 8:49 PM

Awesome.

Gonna hurt so good. I'm thinking: thrusters, easy (early); pullups, hard (long time).

I'm hoping for double digits. I'll take whatever I get.

Comment #42 - Posted by: Joe McCune at June 19, 2008 8:52 PM

Keith D:

I think the main difference between P90X and CF is in the goals.

With CrossFit, form follows function. Athletes train to be well rounded in all areas of fitness (general physical preparedness/GPP). We train using functional lifts at high intensities with constant variety. We train to be able to perform well in a variety of situations; our training reflects real world challenges faced by athletes, as well as military/police/fire personnel. Looking good results from hard training, but that's not the main goal here.

The marketing of P90X is all about form - looking good. Of course, there's a lot of interest in that. Most people don't have a goal to be functionally fit; they want to look good in a swimsuit, and that's fine. Looking at their site, there are a few isolation movements (flyes/curls/lat raises), and the videos (at least what I've seen on TV) have the feel of the typical "cardio class." There is a focus on "muscle confusion," with varied training modalities, and there is the idea of a recovery phase similar to that proffered here (3 on 1 off, reducing intensity 50% week 4, etc.)

Their surrogate markers for improvements in fitness (per the website) are interesting. They focus on improvments in push-ups, pull-ups, wall squats, leg lifts, toe stretch, and HR recovery. First, there is no indication of whether push-up/pull-up numbers are max reps or for time (1 min? 2 min?) Second, what the hell is a wall squat for time, and who cares how many leg lifts you can do? They do post some decent gains in these areas of fitness with P90X, and it is better than nothing. However, in a "hopper" scenario, I believe a CrossFitter would blow a P90X'er out of the water. This is reflective of what matters in training - application to real world scenarios, whether in sport, your profession, or everyday life.

In addition, their dietary focus is different. They use a three phase approach, with a high-protein diet, followed by a mix of protein and carbs, followed by a higher carbohydrate diet. All phases are inferred by me to be low fat. Once again, their goal is to "get you ripped." Compare this with the Zone/Paleo Zone advocated by CF, its balance of macronutrients, and its impact on performance and longevity. Once again, CF's focus is on function - eating for health and performance; "getting ripped" follows.

I don't think P90X is evil; it's better than no exercise/diet/lifestyle modification at all, and it's probably better than most other fitness programs. However, CF is superior in its goals and its results.

If that doesn't convince him, just tell him that any program that uses dumbbell curls, flyes, and lateral raises is for wankers.

Comment #44 - Posted by: JD Hein at June 19, 2008 9:03 PM

P90X is like Crossfit-lite on a starvation diet. it's not a bad workout, lots of pullups, quick pace, but Crossfit is definitely heads above. I have done both (Crossfit for about 2 years) and when my coworkers were sucking wind and dropping out of the P90X workouts, I was cruising along trying to break a sweat. I'm trying to use it as a stepping stone to Crossfit for others who are dead-set on P90X...P90X is a 90 day program, so what do we do after the 90 is up...Crossfit!!

That was a great weekend of lunchtime WODs!

P.S.- I hit 18 double unders in a row the other day. WooHoo! (I still hate them)

Comment #52 - Posted by: freddy c._one world at June 19, 2008 9:35 PM

I have a question. Does anyone else seem to have a large difference in weight in regards to their 1 rep max for dead lift and back squat? My 1RM for DL is 405 but my 1RM for BS is only 315. Just wondering what the disparity is about. Didn't know if it was normal (slightly different ROM with the lifts) or if they should be closer due to the mutual muscle groups/similar ROM involved.

Comment #53 - Posted by: The Good Shepherd at June 19, 2008 9:37 PM

#53 the good shepherd

I think quite of few of us are in the same boat, it just simply means that we have to work in creating balance. Also its my opinion that for the deadlifts you have a lot my asisting muscles so I think you are ok..just keep focus and work on making them even or at least closer to being even...I could be wrong. dont fret you are doing fine.....:o)

Ken D. How do I get somemone who is on the P90X workout and diet to try crossfit?

Ken, tell any person who is doing P90X that it is a good prep for crossfit and to try it after he/she is done with the 90 day P90X cycle.

Pete NZ comment 49, I am sorry for your loss, its a loss for all of us. May Vic Reeves and his family find peace.

The Good Shepard comment 53: Hey, my dead lift and squat seem disproportionate? Am I weak?

Actually, Its hard to tell without knowing your body weight so I used 200 pounds for you. If you do weigh 200 lbs than your dead lift is between intermediate and advanced and with a squat of 315 you are in the same range between intermediate and advanced. From here, you look well rounded. There is a chart in Rip's book, starting strength that has all of the figures that you are looking for.

Have Fun, Train Hard,

Billy

Thanks for the input. I meant to put my stats but forgot to. As it is: m/72in/182lb/32yrs The question wasn't necessarily 'am i weak' but more 'is this a normal spread considering the two lifts are functionally similar'. I think Lee may be on the right track in that with DL's there are more assisting muscles. Quick question, with my weight being lower than you estimated does that mean I'm in the advanced/advanced group?(everyone wants to feel special) :) Thanks again for the help.

Comment #60 - Posted by: The Good Shepherd at June 19, 2008 10:48 PM

I've seen CrossFit Sonoma do this one a lot earlier than late April 08. Last year or early this winter/spring; I think sometime when I stopped by for the adult class that happened that crossover'd at the same time as the CrossFit late night class at that gymnastics gym.

It looked disgusting and I remember asking Danny S if it was some mutant form of Fran.

Good Shepard, comment 60: Am I special :>)

Well, a 181 lbs advanced lifter who is not a specialist should do:

Shoulder Press: 164lbs
Back Squat: 367lbs
Dead Lift: 438lbs
Bench Press: 275lbs
Power Clean: 264lbs

a 181 pound intermediate lifter who is not a specialist should do:

Shoulder Press: 138lbs
Back Squat: 269lbs
Dead Lift: 315lbs
Bench Press: 201lbs
Power Clean: 194lbs

Your 405lbs dead lift and your 315lbs squat at 182lbs of body weight puts you right in-between intermediate and advanced which means that you are pretty proportionate as a lifter for these two lifts. If you are in the same area for the other lifts mentioned then you are a well rounded athlete who is not specialized.

So, you're special and not specialized :>)

Have Fun, Train Hard,

Billy

Comment #64 - Posted by: Billy at June 19, 2008 11:26 PM

Ouch, metcon hell coming right up. Light weight, short reps - the only reason to stop is that you are staring at your lungs on the floor ...

65lb thrusters - that's just a 10lb'er on each end of an oly bar cos we count the weight of the bar too. Drop down into a deep squat with the bar in the rack position, drive up out of the hole with enough momentum to drive the bar overhead till you are wearing your shoulders like ear-muffs. Rinse, lather and repeat.

Pull-ups - kip them or otherwise get em done as fast as poss. Full stretch at the bottom, head over bar at the top

Cheers, kempie

We ended up doing FRAN today so I think I will skip this one. Also I did FRAN in 7:37 today. It is no 2 minute FRAN, but my last on just over a month ago was 10:04 and at the cert in April I didn't even finish it as Rx'd. John from Agoge switched it to 65# half way through and I finished in 9:40 scaled. So I think I am making excellent progress.

Now what to do today....

deadlift should always be more than your squat. anytime i see someone's deadlift and squat being about the same i think either their deadlift is weak or they're not getting the correct depth on their squat.

Question:

Need some advice in regards to epicondylitis. Been re-occuring over the past year. Docs tell me to rest, ice, compression, elevation & anti inflammatories. Been doing all of that. Then try to do pull ups again - it flares up all over again.

Anyone have any other TTPs that worked for them. ATT I can't do pull ups & it's holding up my ability to train.

#20 Chad, Here is why I picked crossfit over P90X:
1. Crossfit is free!
2. In crossfit, the workouts take only as long as you make them
3. In P90X, if you wanna look like that, you have to follow their strict diet.
4. Their diet plans, like many other popular workout/diet plans assume you have a high in grocery store like many that are found in Laguna Beach.
5. If those results were that real, why isn't it the only thing in workout mags?
6. Who the heck wants to have to listen to that douche count and talk while you work out
7. after watching the video 2-3 time you memorize the work outs, sounds like a bunch of money just wasted.

Finally, look at the people in the crossfit pics and videos, those are real people and real results.

Tell your friend to stop being a bigot. Granted, they are entitled to their own opinion, but listening to others and being open minded not only makes you learn and grow as a person, it makes you not look like a baby. Or, it could just be that they know your right, and they don't wanna admit they wasted hundreds of dollars.

I did P90x for 2 months.
this is my 2nd month of crossfit.

Crossfit is by far the best fitness theory/program/experience I've ever done. However, any and all P90x nay-sayers should go out of their way to try the first 2 DVD's. Sure, Tony Horton is an imbecile and the marketed goal is aesthetic, but the chest and back DVD is essentially Cindy training. I'm actually having a friend do P90x for a few weeks before he joins the local affiliate (hudson valley).

comment 43#
for a wall sqaut.
go to a wall. face the other way and drop into a squat position (landing at 90 degrees with your back against the wall) stay in this supported position as long as possible. You make fun, but if Coach added this to a WOD, there would be a lot of positive chatter on the boards.(think one-legged wall squats in a Fight Gone Bad scenario)

My dead-hang pullup stats:
Pre P90x-10
Post P90x-14
2 months Crossfit- 25

In closing,
P90x is for that guy at the bar who keeps looking at his reflection in the mirror. Crossfit is for the guy who beats him up (and then hoists him overhead and sprints to the nearest hospital).

Thanks Coach!

P90X is an ineluctable facet of our success (that's what the lawyers say about all our derivative/parasitic imitators, even the friendly ones. We turned down the infomercial "opportunity" at the heart of P90X's successes. We'll turn it down again.

If anyone is unsure whether to try P90X, Gym Jones, Ross Boxing, Monkey Bar Gym,...or to do CrossFit, our answer has long been an unequivocal, "do us last".

Get in the best shape you possibly can doing anything and everything else, then and only then come around. This is easiest on us and you. It's a direct route to your potential without doubling back. When you arrive here, recheck old workouts from your travels and you'll find that you can crush your old PR's.

I tried the p90x last summer before I knew CrossFit existed. I was about two months in and somehow stumbled onto CrossFit surfing the web. I packaged up the p90x sold it on ebay and used the money to outfit my garage gym and have been doing CF since September.

As said above, it is a good prep for CF but blows it away in the overall fitness gains and solid thinking behind the training.

Just wish I had been turned onto CF long ago.

Body type has a lot to do with how your deadlifts and squats compare. Rip states this over and over. I am someone whose squat is about 90% of my deadlift. I am 69", 165lbs, wear size 30 inseam...short legs, long torso. Short legs help a lot in a low bar back squat. I bet a lot of guys with long legs, have a much different ratio of deadlift to back squat.

Yesterday, I PR'd back squat at 350 and DL'd 375 (15lbs under PR). I squat to a pad 11" off the ground. In this position, my patella is 19" above the ground, hip crease 18" off the ground.

I added two dead-hang pullups (20 to 22) and dropped almost 45 seconds off my run (21:40 to 20:57). But the improved score is a sideshow to the improvements I've seen in every aspect of my fitness, and my general feeling of wellbeing. Thanks Coach!

Comment #130 - Posted by: Jacob at June 20, 2008 6:45 AM

first, about the video. this now ranks in my favorite videos -- nicole doing linda, nasty girls and today's video. why those? because crossfit is humbling. to EVERYONE. i loved hearing nicole talk about "just finishing" linda and her struggling to get those muscle-ups in nasty girls and today watching eva struggle and freddy's double-unders -- they struggle. just like me.

it reminds me of something i read at againfaster:

"The men and women that decimate your times are not superhuman. They’re not particularly genetically gifted. Hell, most of the top CrossFitters in the world would get absolutely pummeled in your standard game of rugby, buried by larger athletes begat by larger parents.

What differentiates these individuals is not a gift, but an unreasonable desire to push self-imposed suck beyond its logical limits. What comes out the other side becomes legendary."

thanks, Jon. thanks, coach.

10 rounds even

subs: 35# Thr; rd 1-4 with 2 small red elastic bands, next 5 reps with one purple, one red, rest jumping pullups.

switched pullups because i wanted to keep this a metcon workout. i think i should have gotten 12 rds, lost time futzing with the bands and lost some focus around 7-8 rds. also, i thought i was cheating BIG TIME with 35#, especially because i only took a pause 3 times through all the thrusters. i feel pretty good about this. i almost convinced myself to not do the WOD this morning, but then i said "suck it up, buttercup."

happy weekend everybody!

I'd appreciate any feedback from trainers or coach -

I noticed in the past couple of days that I've been prone to muscle cramps (quad & calves) during WODs or training BJJ.

Any ideas like hydration issues, or just typical training soreness? I don't think its nutritional, as I'm pretty locked in with the Zone and have been for 8+ months.

FWIW - I train in a garage gym so typical temp is 95+. So maybe its environmental?

Thanks for any replies.

I'm not completely sure but i think that the gym i work out at doesn't have the soft medicine balls people use for thrusters. What would a suitable replacement be? Would a regular flat bench work? Or one of the smaller balls people use for abs and push up balance work?

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Having a higher squat isnt bad, seeing how you started with a good squat in weight, you may have just been tired and un-able to use the hip drivee for the deadlift. Next CFT, try doing your deadlift before you squat and see how it differs.

Before I started crossfit in winter '04, I was doing Body by Fish (trainforstrength.com). I actually found out about crossfit somehow through the guy's website. I was impressed that the workouts got me in relatively good shape, even though I wasn't eating very well, and had just come back from a deployment where I had actually gotten fat and out of shape by eating too much AF chow and doing bodybuilder routines. I got leaner and stronger, had more energy and such, and when I found crossfit, I was able to pretty much get right into the WOD's. The first time I did Cindy I got 20 rounds, which I thought wasn't too bad for a first timer, so I think Fish was a good base-builder for crossfit.

I've since changed crossfit to my primary routine with the Fish routines as a supplement every once in awhile. This really isn't an advertisement or anything, but Fish is good for times that you're traveling and don't have access to a gym to do the WOD's, it costs way less than P90X, doesn't require access to a DVD player and TV, and Fish's voice doesn't make you want to punch something like P90X guy's does. (The smarmyness of the P90X guy is overwhelming, IMHO.) I have Fish loaded on my iPod, and can pretty much do the workouts anywhere I can find a 8 ft x 4 ft patch of space. I've done many a workout in between beds in hotel rooms. I can't testify to the effectiveness of the P90X system, however, since it pretty much sits on a shelf (as I anticipated it would), but I'm sure if you stay with it and eat right that you'll look great, and probably wouldn't have too hard a time transitioning to crossfit.

I have been doing crossfit for about 3 weeks now. It is the best. My legs and shoulders were so exhausted from the CFT. I was whipped on the first set. I think i did a total of 7 or maybe 6 i was so f'n out of it. My weak point are the thrusters, I did the pullups no prob. Those thrusters are so deadly even with 65#'s. Dear Adrian,
You are sick.
Get well soon.

Comment #271 - Posted by: Michael Wiebe at June 20, 2008 11:17 AM

I did my best to push past what I did last time this one came up, which I think was in between 8 and 9. Today I completed 12 rounds with 6 seconds to spare. I also did my first Tabata workout from crossfitendurance.com about 45 minutes before. That was a kick in the lungs.

Re; advice for elbow epicondylitis
I had brutal lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) last year-this is what I did to get rid of it:
1. see a physiotherapist-and do what they advise: it will be a period of rest followed by gradual return to activity when pain free
2. wear an elbow brace for all WOs, these are available in drug stores and they really work
3. massage the tender spot hard for 2-3 mins after all excercise: this seems to prevent it coming back
antinflammatory drugs do nothing, icing helps a bit
it took about 3 months for mine to get better
good luck

One of the best videos ever. The wife says she's going to look like Eva or die trying. Does anyone know what kind of shoes Bozman is wearing?

11 round and 3 thrusters

Thrusters at 20kg
Pull up with band

Did this in my garage, bought a bar, so I was able to do thrusters and had already put up a bar for chins, although this bent when I was using it. I need a stronger bar or need to lose weight.

Yes you can wear gloves, but if you do be aware of a couple of things:
a)hardcores will make fun of you
b)you will lose a sense of connection with the bar
If you don't care about those things and would rather not have ripped up hands you can find gloves at pretty much any sporting store.
Personally, I have a pumice stone that I use on my callouses to make sure they don't get too big and then tear and as well if I am doing a workout like todays where there is going to be lots of pullups or knees to elbows I will tape my hands up before I even start to prevent problems. If you look at the picture from a couple of days ago of the two young kids on the pullup bars they have a good tape job going.

GET GLUCOSTMINE IT WILL NOT WORK SHORT TERM, BUT WILL WORK IN THE LONG RUN.. I HAD TENNIS ELBOW, AND IT WOULD HURT JUST TO GRAB SOMEONES ARM. AFTER TAKING GLUCOSTINE I HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS. ICE THE ELBOW AND MASSAGE DOWN THE ELBOW. STRETCH IT OUT BY PULLING UR HAND BACK FROM UR FINGERS.

If you are worried about tearing your hands, use lifting straps...improves your grip and also looks more hardcore !

7 rounds, first two at 55# the rest at 65# but with broken sets. I think that I underestimated myself today as I definitely could have done them all as rx'd. Arrgh!
I have a question: my wrists started to hurt after 4 or so sets so is this normal until one becomes more conditioned to the exercise?
I finally did my first couple of overhead squats with the bar and not the broomstick. Woohoo!
