Because I can't manage so many consecutive DU's, I do 3 times as many Single Unders. If you don't have a rope, do as many as rx'd tuck jumps.

Comment #18 - Posted by: RV-KY at May 30, 2008 7:58 PM

Anyone ever used the Stamina ATS Rower? I've read on a couple different sites that its comparable to the Concept II at a fraction of the price. Just wondering if anyone has any personal experience.

Comment #19 - Posted by: Rick at May 30, 2008 8:03 PM

The thing I love the most about this WOD is the fact that I will be able to do it at an army globo-gym while I don't have access to my friend's garage gym. It sounds rough except for the fact that my double unders are a lot better - without practice, to boot!

Rick there are plenty of threads on this topic of rowers in the message boards but I can save you the time. Everyone says it is either Concept 2 or nothing else.

Coach:
So based on that comment I would have to speculate that you have moved from Santa Cruz to Flagstaff and that the Tuesday Morning workout in the ManCave was at your new diggs. Very nice if I am not mistaken. Looked to be the perfect garage gym for a stray challenge every now and again and a place to devise some of the most scrupulous workouts known to man. Thanks for all you do. The next workout looks like another good one.

2 months in and trained up to a 740 on my CFT, and whats best is I EXCEEDED MY GOAL of 725.

I think thats what we're about, right?

Lets go on this WOD, its gonna hit my weak shoulders and make me stronger.

Gonna hit Barbara in the morning and WOD in the afternoon.

There's nothing like progress and making goals to spike your intensity.

Here goes an even 1000 CFT in 6 months!

Coach, thank you for the cert at CrossFit Ripper this week. We have a saying in the Marine Corps, “ a commander votes with his time” In other words; if a commander says one thing but spends his time on something else, his words are hollow. You voted with your time this week. Your physical presence at our cert and the tremendous effort and passion provided by Tim, Jolie, Jimmy, Dave and our brothers from CF Camp Pendleton. Your commitment helped us advance our goal of ensuring Marines are trained as combat athletes. You all have had an impact far beyond your numbers. In short, we may have built a decent facility, but that alone is simply an inanimate object. You and your staff, as well as the whole CrossFit community, breathe life into our humble facility; you are the heart that pumps blood to our muscle and sinew. Because of your efforts and that of your team, the Marines and Sailors of 7th Marines will go into combat better prepared.

Just got back from the CrossFit Ripper cert. It was a great experience. Being able to have this experience on the Marine base with the Coach was an honor. The trainers were pros, they were helpful, insightful and demanding. You can't ask for more except we could have used 2 more days with all the things we could have gone through. Picking the brains of the coach and the trainer was a great opportunity for learning. An experience I will always remember. Thanks Coach, the trainers and all the Marines that made this happen.

Coach & CrossFit Cert Team:
Thank you for all you did for us at the CrossFit Ripper Cert. It was an incredible couple days and an honor to share the gym with you. I only wish I didn't have to go back to the real world after two days in CrossFitLand.

Comment #36 - Posted by: Rachel at May 30, 2008 9:17 PM

Just wanted to post this quickly and say thank you to coach and the crossfit community. I've been doing crossfit for about a year and a half after being told about it by a friend. After finishing a career as a college football player I began to gain weight and become increasingly bored with the traditional workouts i was doing. Crossfit gave me confidence by pushing me to do things I thought previously were impossible, and has made me mentally and physically a tougher person. This Monday I'm applying to become a firefighter at a full time department, and feel more confident in my athletic ability as I've ever been. My many thanks to crossfit for introducing me to the horribly wonderful feeling of pulling up the website, reading the WOD, feeling my stomache twist into a knot, then taking a breath and smiling because I know I get to test myself in a new way everyday.
Thanks again.

Comment #37 - Posted by: The Crisco at May 30, 2008 9:23 PM

Double-unders are so much harder than singles that I don't think doing more singles is really a substitute. I would suggest doing tuck jumps or if you can only do one DU at a time, do that.

I can do hundreds of singles without stopping, but in the 40-50 range of DUs I have to stop, they are just so exhausting. I just don't think there is a 3 to 1, 4 to 1, or any ratio that makes sense, the intensity level is just different.

If you can't do consecutive double-unders, try doing one or two singles then a double and alternate that. Not good for your time, but it is good practice. I started practicing DUs for a couple minutes before and after the WOD. In a couple months you'll go from having to alternate a DU with a single to as many consecutive DUs as your heart will allow before popping.

Comment #38 - Posted by: Corey at May 30, 2008 9:38 PM

Some confusion out there... for those that can't do double-unders. The proper sub is tuck jumps.

Check the FAQ for a definition of this. Good luck.

I read that the subs for double unders is tuck jumps, but the video linked is pretty grainy and at a bad angle. Is it basically a box jump minus the box? Thank you in advance for the help.

Tuck jump is basically bending at the knees a bit like a push press, and then explosively jumping as high as possible keeping your head forward and back straight as possible and bringing your knees to your chest and back down.

WOD as rx'd 25.34 had to break up thrusters in 4's and same with double unders

Suggestion: If you are having trouble with double unders: try a different rope or rope length. The gym I am at is well equiped, several ropes from leather to light platic. I hadn't done a double under in years and had difficulty with the first to ropes. Then I found another and was doing 3-6 at a time immediately.

Great for the Heart rate! Your form is key. The rope that did work was slightly too short whereas the next one was too long. It wouldn't fit under my feet without a big tuck (inefficient) thereby tripping me up after several jumps.

Afterwards I did some single jumps to keep the cardio going. Noticed that my swing is imbalanced due to shoulder reconstruction. When I concentrated balancing my swing to keep the rope in a uniform arc (felt awkward for my shoulders) the jumps were smoother.

To all the Marines that got the cert put together at Crossfit Ripper, you did a great job. It's a real priviledge to be able to attend a cert anywhere, but I think being able to attend at a military base makes it that much more of one. My husband and I were both very impressed by the character of all the Marines (and civilians) there. Thanks to the Marine(Sorry, I've forgotten your name already) who took Jeff to the PX to get some shoes for the cert. He hadn't planned on certing so he was not really prepared.

As for the Crossfit staff, it can't be said enough, you were all great. It's obvious that you walk the walk. All of you were very encouraging, corrective where need be, and obviously cared about how we all took in this knowledge and put it to use.

Coach is as knowledgeable, caring, and funny as everyone has said. He is also very generous. Jeff and I personally thank you for that generosity.

Dave said if we had any negative comments, let you guys know. Only one, could have stayed for another week and still not learned enough!

Thanks again! What a way to spend your 19th anniversary. All it lacked was crystal blue water and a couple of snorkels.

15:16. Used 85# for thrusters and sub'd 18" box jumps for the double unders given there is no room in this gym for jumping rope. Totally ridiculous.

Comment #121 - Posted by: Norma at May 31, 2008 9:00 AM

I used 115lbs for the thrusters and did twice the amount of singles.

10:08 was my time.

I'm going to work on DU because I enjoy skipping and will probably find I'll get it easily with a little practice.

I've been doing crossfit for a few months now (I wish I would have kept track of a start date) but I've noticed a huge change in the way my body looks and how strong I've become (I used to be impressed with a 180lb DL and managed a 275 in the CFT yesterday) but I know I have to clean up my eating. I picked up a Zone Cooking Made Easy book but I find most of the meals are a little 'different' and I'm trying to feed myself and an 8 year old. Any suggestions on simple yet common meals and snacks that keep you in the zone?
Also, anyone have any thoughts on dairy? I've recently come to the conclusion that I'm lactose intolerant so I've gotten rid of mostly all dairy in my diet but I've started drinking soy milk with meals. Getting back to the Zone, it looks as though its mostly water that you're supposed to be drinking, aside from some shakes. Is soy milk a 'bad' drink?

Thanks,
amanda

this workout looks sooo fun! and yes i am being serious! I have to take another restday, since i am stuck at work all day.

i'm working on drinking less and zoning a bit better on the weekends. i do great during the week but come the weekend it all goes to hell. last night was good, went to the movies and brought broccoli, turkey and almonds. :-) my only cheat was a couple glasses of wine later in the evening; which is a huge improvement for me.

Weight on the thrusters was very challenging for me, but I'm proud I went that heavy. Had to do one single for every double under, but I kept the rope moving well. It was only once I finished that I realized I could actually do consecutive double unders and I proceeded to get 10 in a row. Finally figured out the rhythm!

I wasn't gonna do the WOD. I was at a friends house and we did a few rounds of Muay Thai-style mits(swedish) training and I did 3x4m rope climbs (no legs), box jumps to about 1,2m 2x10 reps, 2x10 reps of L-PU so I thought it was a decent workout and felt (almost) pleased. But... when I came home I wanted to give the WOD a go, just to see if I could do one round. It was hell, but I finished and the satisfaction is just unbelievable. I love X-fit.

First time doing double unders, very very ugly, but a steep learning curve, I should be much better next time. Alot of power from the shoulders on the thrusters, tried to concentrate on gaining momentum from the hip.
Been crossfitting for a little over 3 weeks now, jumped onto the mainstream WOD two weeks ago and already added 20 pounds to my standard 10 rep max bench press. Been doing 225 for over 5 years now, just yesterday I did 225 like it was a warm up, and easily pumped out 10 reps of 245. Squats are much better as well, I no longer feel like i been in a 12 round fight after doing 10 reps of 225. I have good form and good power throughout the movement. I tell everyone I know, that crossfit is the way to go, better than any other workout I've ever done, I love it.

Shoulder problems still, so...

Subbed 40 kilo (88 pound) front squats for thrusters.

Most of these were singles or doubles. Then, just to rub it in, my body did an unbroken run of ten strait on the last set. I just pray we don't have to do this at the Games, I can't really do it, if I weren't counting the times I made the 'double heigh jump' as a "DU" I'd still be out there trying to finish this thing.

I was thinking of subbing 95# on the thrusters, but my brother talked me into doing 115# and I'm glad I listened.

subbed 115# thrusters and tuck jumps with knees up as high as possible:

14:36

The first set of thrusters was unbroken and every other set was broken into 2s and 3s. A month or so ago my thruster 1RM was 115# and I just used the same weight for my working sets.

This shiitake works!

Thanks to all for your support and help, couldn't have made it without you guys, Todd, Dave, Joli, Jimmy, and Tim. Coach G you were awesome and really opened my eyes to the truth about the measurable ways that describe fitness and what crossfit is all about. I appreciated you spending time with me. Col. McCoy thanks for hosting this great training experience, plenty of good guys behind making it a success. When I open my crossfit I hope to get a few guys like the ones under your command, they were terrific. All in all an A+ in my book, cant wait to get to Charlotte, NC and begin to open up a new affiliate there. Hooah.

Whats up everyone. This is my first ever post on the website:0 I have been doing crossfit workouts for 8 months but not following the WOD schedule until 2 weeks ago. I realized life would be a lot simpler had I just followed the WOD's all along.
I am a former college football player and I have NEVER been humbled from my college S&C program(and it was damn tough), the way Crossfit has humbled me. When I watch the atheletes in the videos (OPT, Nicole, Rob Miller, Greg A., Eva T, Speal,Annie come to mind) I am just blown away. I wish I knew about Crossfit when I was playing ball. I am absolutley certain it would have made me a better, more conditioned athelete. I really want to be a part of this community. Everyone is so positive. Its a monster gulp of fresh-air. Congrats on the PR's/improvements everyone, keep on truckin. Coach Glassman is amazing. I am a Crossfit lifer. sorry about the long post.

Set 1: Did 5 thrusters, rested, did 3 more and decided I couldn't do 10, so settled for 8 and decided to skip the first set of 10/50. Then, realized I couldn't do DUs either, so sub'd 2:1

I couldn't believe how the jumps gassed me. I thought the thrusters would be the hard part, but I could have actually gone heavier on those.

Thrusters with 135 where tough but completed,
Tuck/Box jumps where tougher but completed,
Even though its an Army gym I got several strange looks. Walking to the car was hard.

I don't think there are two exercises that I could be worse at than these. Well, scratch that, it could've been OHS and burpees

Comment #294 - Posted by: EricBrandom at May 31, 2008 3:22 PM

As per Freddie C., the thrusters were a cakewalk (although a heavy cakewalk) while the double unders were a comical event. Add to that the torment of every 8 year-old girl in the neighbourhood pointing and laughing as I flailed around with the rope like a buffoon.
But I'm still damned proud that I pulled off 150 DUs one way or another. Time was pitiful at 26:40 but I'm happy with my small victory.
Thanks Coach and Crossfit! I love the fact that I can leave my workouts proud that I accomplished a feat I never thought I could do.

I made my first 10 thrusters unbroken and did pretty well on the first round of DU's. Got ugly after that. Thrusters were broken 2-3-3 (I didn't expect to be so winded from the DU's), 3-3, 2-2-2, 2. If I could clean up the du's I could have been a little faster...

My right tricep is really buggin' out on me. I definately strained something when I missed a PR clean attempt last weekend. I hope tomorrow isn't anything pressing.

I'm freaking out. This is the first time I got to look at the site all day!

I need a new computer.

CrossFit Weekend Warriors this morning outside in beautiful snny California. This is what I came here for.

400m run
50 pull-ups
400m run
50 push-ups
400m run
50 sit-ups
400m run
50 squats

I think my time was 21 something. Terrible considering my Angie time is one a couple minutes over that. Running Kills me which is why it's good I've been doing more of it.

I've got that hill on my mind!

Jeff Tucker's Gymnastics Seminar is a must take for any Crossfit athlete. Everyone in the class is perfomring techniques that they have never done before. For many the seminar is a first to accomplishing many goals that athletes thought were unreachabel. Thank you Jeff and thank you Crossfit Cherry Point.

135# thrusters and tuck jumps subbed for DU (still no jump rope cause I'm lame and won't just go buy one)

165# was my 1RM for thrusters the other day, so 30 thrusters at 135# is quite an accomplishment. I almost gave up at the middle of the set of 8 to switch the weight down. Glad I didn't.
