Shout out to SurferJenn and RobertNYC. So great to meet you guys. Thanks for the tape Jenn!

THEN a kettlebell class at Throwdown. It was pretty hard and my hands were giving up on me. But fun.

This ZONE has got a hold on me. I'm starting to like it and I'm actually teaching myself how to cook. I hope it gets my weight down. That way 15 bodyweight OHS will be easier ;)

Can anyone explain OPT and AFT? I realize from the video that these refer to actual Crossfit people, but who are they and what do the acronyms stand for?

Looking forward to this one. Shoulders are still sore from the Bar Muscle ups and I need to focus on my lower back and core. Seems like whenever i get humbled by a workout and have a realizaion that i need to work on form in a particular area, someone reads my mind and provides the lessons ;)

Thanks for your help

Hello All,
Just out of the CrossFit womb. Been doing CrossFit for about a month and I'm lovin' every second of each workout. You guys are great & very helpful. One question. I can do the exercises as rx'd, but it usually takes me a bit longer than the times posted. Would it be better for me to drop the weight so I can decrease my recovery time between rounds? Or should I continue to do WOD as rx'd as quickly as I can?

Comment #26 - Posted by: Sean at May 13, 2008 8:25 PM

I just don't get why more CF celebs don't want to compete in the games, we have maybe 15-20 people from OPT's facility alone coming just for the fun of it. Step up, you are the CF standard!

Hey guys,
i just started crossfit 2 days ago, my boyfriend got me into it and its awesome!!! i see the WOD is deadlift. I have a 20 lbs kettlebell and currently do not have access to a gym. Any suggestions on how i can modify this exercise with the kettlebell?

Comment #29 - Posted by: sati at May 13, 2008 8:32 PM

Question about DLs.

I am a lanky guy and when I do DLs the only way I feel I can keep my lower back in its natural arch is to rake the bar across my shins and knees which leave me bruised and bleeding after about 2 sets. I then compromise my form to keep the bar from rubbing my shins and knees because it's painful. Does anyone else experience this? Any suggestions on how to prevent this? The shins and knees are still bruised and scabbed from Diane. Thanks.

Comment #30 - Posted by: Jason at May 13, 2008 8:33 PM

Hi Tim P. comment 23

Nope and .... nope

Crossfit's methodology says that you should be able to lift and hold onto the weight without extra equipment, especially straps. There is a place for weight belts according to Coach Rip in his book "Starting Strength", which is an awesome book that you should read if you haven't already, which says that weight belts are fine with heavy loads. Most crossfitters do not generally train with a weight belt.

Have Fun, Train Hard,

Billy

RE: #31

Thank you billy; what about grip?

both hands over or alternate grip

Comment #33 - Posted by: tim p at May 13, 2008 8:43 PM

#29 sati- One way to modify is to find odd objects to deadlift. If you go to any store that sells 5 gallon water jugs that has handles, the kind you find on top of water coolers, you can fill it them with water and keep adding. About $20 for 2 if not on sale. Placing them on a scale next to you before your lifts will let you know how much you're going up in weight. They have plugs and won't really leak. I haven't had any problems with mine. Just about anything can be dead lifted. Hope it helps. Have fun.
D.L.'s!!! Looking to get over 225#, and then some. Should be interesting. Yo Rookie Brian Mac.!! Hi to all you guys from the Huntington Beach Cert.

Comment #34 - Posted by: polo lopez at May 13, 2008 8:45 PM

Hi Jason,

#30
I am also a lanky guy, and deadlifts scrape up my shins as well. I usually wear high tube socks (like a soccer player) and just look like a weirdo. But it does help.

Nick in Laos

Comment #35 - Posted by: nick at May 13, 2008 8:50 PM

#23 I think a belt is OK but I believe no straps are allowed.

For people wondering about grip, it is up to you. I recommend one hand over and under when doing heavy loads. It will prohibit the bar from rolling out of your hands.

By the way, I got the smack down from Lauren by getting my meaningless first post removed. Lesson learned Lauren! LOL

Comment #36 - Posted by: Adam W 39/5'7"/178 at May 13, 2008 8:57 PM

#30 Jason

Yeah I have the same problem. No I'm not tall and lanky, but from watching the videos, I've concluded that keeping the bar in contact with your shins/thighs is simply part of the lift, and in doing so, I beat the crap out of my tibia. So I get scabs and bruised shins. If you watched "Glory Box" you'll notice that there's a close-up of one girl's bloody knee... I can only assume that it is the result of deadlifts or full cleans. Anyways, my philosophy on it is that eventually my skin and bones will get used to the scraping and toughen up.

If you're wondering about the videos I watched, check out the Rippetoe series on deadlifts. It is VERY enlightening. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you want to maximize your weight on deadlift, you're going to beat up your shins and knees.

Comment #37 - Posted by: heady murphy at May 13, 2008 9:03 PM

I have the same problem with the bar scraping my shins and knees. I either wear sweat pants, it helps a lot, or put baby powder on my knew and legs where the bar touches and powder on the area of the bar that scrapes. i wear chalk on my hands when dead lifting really heavy, it just seems to help. i can't get comfortable with a belt, but i would think it would help the average person considering the amount of weight you will be pulling with a dead lift. good luck!

Got to get 550lbs on this one. 520 is my pr so far but i want more. I'm trying for a CFT of 1300+ next time it rolls around.

Jason - I'm 6'6" and have long limbs. When i do deads i don't touch my shins, however i don't beleive that i have good form. I think you should touch your shins, i just don't because i do not want to end up bleeding because of my workout.

Comment #41 - Posted by: Raze at May 13, 2008 9:15 PM

#37-heady
If you get a true olympic lifting bar the middle section between the knurling should be wide enough to keep from beating up your shins. you might catch a scrap now and then but it's a self-correcting error. You shouldn't be setting your feet wide enough to get scraped. Think angle of hips to femur. Hope that helps a bit.

#29-sati
Almost forgot. Use a wooden dowel or pvc pipe and practice your form. If you're just starting out in Crossfit, then there's no hurry to set PR's just yet. If you stay in the starting position with a wooden dowel long enough you'll feel the position, be able to make adjustments, and get a workout. I have my clients do it and they dread it. We were help in the starting position at the Huntington Beach cert for what seemed like forever. It helps and gets the point across. Hope that helps.

Comment #44 - Posted by: whisky at May 13, 2008 9:29 PM

Tim, comment 33, what about grip?

Many people use the double overhand hook grip like it is shown in this video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=UYzNkYDdJT8

On the dead lift, as the weight gets heavier, I move from the double overhand hook grip to the alternating grip with my thumb over my fingers instead of under. If you decide to use the alternating grip, you probably want to face your non-dominant hand away (supinate) and keep your dominant hand in an overhand grip. Be careful using the alternating grip, it can cause problems in your shoulders if they are not flexible. If you use just the overhand grip, your grip strength will increase fast.

Have Fun, Train Hard,

Billy

I'm new to crossfit but have been dead liftin off and on for a few years. I'm a pretty lanky guy with some long ole knuckle draggers, and my shins are almost one long continuous scar. I am constantly getting asked why they're all scarred up (people usually think its from bike pedals?) I thought it was cause I'm a man-scaper and that just made the scars a little more visable. Anyways, good deadlift form is keeping the bar close to your body so a few nicks and cuts is just a small price to pay. Tube socks and pants are both good solutions, I've even seen dudes wear soccer shin guards - but I would definetly not recommend going that route. Long story short, chicks dig scars!

Way to go out on a limb with those predictions, guys... ggmmmfft! Wouldn't want to step on any toes. Well, to tell you the truth, I'm going to be bummed if Bozman doesn't compete. I would just love to see him in the clutch, especially going up vs Pat, his arch friend/rival. I'm not too disappointed about Eva, because I'm pretty sure she would just kick everybody's ass. I'm trying to get as many people from my affiliate as possible to come, even the Noobs. Just want it to happen and want them ALL to get stoked and amped. I can't wait myself. I really did enjoy the video, but it would have been more fun if you guys would have made predictions/bets/picked favorites. (And now for the hyper-unrealistic trash talking... ) How about the most important prize of all The Games? How about the Affiliate cup? Oh yeah... that will belong to CROSSFIT MARIN. Didn't really need to mention THAT, did we?

Love you all,

-Drais

Comment #53 - Posted by: Amadraeus at May 14, 2008 3:14 AM

Oh, yeah.. so another prediction.. The Teenagers? How are they going to do? Connor & David from Brand X will actually be able to beat most of the MEN, but I'll still edge them off by a couple of points. Is that a challenge? You bet! (I better get off my lazy ass so I don't get spanked and have to eat my words.) We will also introduce Gabriel Taube from CrossFit Marin to his first games, and even though he is just a noob, he will give an impressive showing. Also Kalista and Keegan will win the 15 & under category, and Mark will win the BAD-ASS OLD GOAT category. Wow, now I'm going out on a limb... lol.

Comment #54 - Posted by: Amadraeus at May 14, 2008 3:26 AM

since starting crossfit about 8 months ago my deadlift has gone from 135 to 325, and i only weigh 160. and the improvements just keep coming. i am constantly in awe of the simplicity and efficacy of this program.

now if i could only save enough money for a cert and find one that's not sold out!

it must be awesome to meet and work out with fellow crossfitters. i envy those that get to visit gyms like one world. i am stuck going solo down here in naples, fl.

good luck today everyone!

I've been stuck at 365 for the deadlift for a few months. Would really like to break that today...

Comment #82 - Posted by: Jim G-ville at May 14, 2008 5:50 AM

WOD: attempted beltless standard straight bar deadlifts in heeled shoes....I don't have a clue how O-lifters can lift so much in them. I felt off balance during the lift and regardless of which hand used the palms away grip (I used a mixed grip each rep) there was a pronounced twist that direction. If I want to use shoes for deadlifting, it's going to take some time to get used to the new groove.

You need to get the West Coast Canadians to bring thier beer! I grew up in Seattle and lived off Kokanee when I didn't have enough money to buy both food and beer.

Freddy, you better recruit the Vancouver CF crew to come to the games if you want the sweet nectar.

After this cycle I will have CF'ed for 99 days. I think after every 100 days (so this cycle is close enough) I'm going to take a cycle off for a full 5 days rest of no WOD's or training of any kind. I was thinking about doing my favorite 3 WOD's for this last cycle, but then I realized I like them all and will just keep doing what is posted.

Stayed at #205 today. Back still very tender from poor deadlift form on "Diane." Worked on form today to avoid future problems, but still hurts even while tearing hide of of shins....disappointing....

#30 Jason -

I went out with an extremely accomplished powerlifter in high school and one of the first things he taught me about DLs is that the bar should remain in contact with your legs throughout the lift. Yes, it does usually mean bloody shins and badly bruised knees, but that's just how it is. I actually just picked up a pair of soccer socks a few days ago, so I'm very excited for this one!

first of all, if you are bleeding because you are using correct form, so be it. It's better than the alternative. A little scrape never hurt anyone.

However, when i see it's deadlift time, I wear sweat pants (assuming I remember at 5:00 a.m. when I am getting ready)

My failures on the 395 were caused by my grip. I would get the weight about an inch off the floor and it would just slide outta my hands. Gotta work on that! The rest of me felt like it was ready for more weight.

This was humbling. I come from a powerlifting background and 14 years ago I used to just throw this much weight around for multiple reps. I actually used to bench more then this! Of course knee wraps, wrist straps, chalk and a belt probably helped a bit back then! :)

I hear ya. Having a Powerlifting background is certainly an advantage when doing Crossfit singles. Doing heavy deadlifts today was like shaking hands with an old friend. Still, a humbling experience considering what I'd toss around as a younger man. I always look for your post(s) considering we've got similar stats. Grab some chalk for your next go 'round. As I'm sure you're aware, it really helps keeping your hands on the bar. Run to win, my friend!

So it has been a while since I have posted. I did Crossfit, but I was not the diligent disciple I could have been.

With that confession made.

I have no idea what the progression was but I PR'd at 300, 25lbs above previous. Between sets, knees to elbows - sets of 5.

This is seriously good stuff.

Cool Down: None

Today was a banner day!

I got over 300lbs on my dead lift today and I felt quite strong. On the last three dead lift days I have been stuck at 295lbs, today I joined the 300 club. I know its not much but its better than I have ever done before and I'm 15 pounds lighter than I have been in 10 years. I was also able to string together 2 bar muscle ups in a row without coming off of the bar :>) another first :>) thanks coach and thanks Dr. Sears.

My lady Lysa also got a PR on her dead lift at 5 pounds over her body weight, very nice Lysa!

Have Fun, Train Hard,

Pre: 3.5 mile track workout, with sprints. Felt my hamstrings -- they must have been thinking about the deadlifts!

Warm up: CFWU x 2, plus worked on L pull ups, 3 x 135 lb. DLs

WOD: 155, 175, 180, 185, 190, 195 (F). I always worry about my back on deadlifts and I think it psyches me out a little. I got the 195 about 5 inches off the floor and then just got stuck. I will get to 200 lbs. one of these days! When you have 190 lbs. on the bar, adding 2 little 2.5 plates seems like it should hardly be noticeable, but then you can't lift it!

Post: 135 DL x 5; worked on inverted pull ups and hangs as seen in this months CFJoural - tons of fun!

Continued my love affair with the shoulder press and things didn't go as planned. Today was supposed to be the press, push press, push jerk triplet but I stalled out at 150 on the press so I backed it off to 115 to try and wave load but stalled at 150 again! After that I just played with push press (170x3) and push jerk (150x1) as it's been a while.

It feels like there is something physically limiting my ability to press heavy weights overhead, like a neural impingment in my neck or something. It's very frustrating, progress here is at a standstill.

Post-21 straight 95lb thrusters to prep for Fran.

so I got scolded today by a "trainer" at a local globo gym, for dropping the weights during my deadlifts. Apparently rubber coated weights hitting a rubber matted floor is a bad thing to be doing. So be warned... rubber hitting rubber causes damage, and disturbs everyone else's serenity as they "pump iron".
