it just the pull-ups that get me, everything else is only kinda sadistic

ok

Comment #3 - Posted by: RobD at April 23, 2008 7:45 PM

I'm pretty pumped for this one! I hope my mountain biking doesn't affect my squats too much.

Comment #4 - Posted by: whisky at April 23, 2008 7:45 PM

Good one, expecting Fran this cycle though.

Comment #7 - Posted by: Jason Ackerman - Albany CrossFit at April 23, 2008 7:46 PM

Oso i want to see you do one pullup on your own today or i will fail you in my evolution class!! This would clearly show that you have not evolved far enough from apes!

Comment #8 - Posted by: Prof. Marshall at April 23, 2008 7:47 PM

I'm excited about this one, I feel another PR coming.

Comment #9 - Posted by: Jdale m/37/6'2/180 at April 23, 2008 7:47 PM

you have to say it like mick jagger ... "i'angie, angie, remember all those nights we cried"

Comment #10 - Posted by: larry at April 23, 2008 7:50 PM

hells yeah! been wanting to do this one since is tarted cf!!

if i do this at home i only have rings that i hang from a tree in my front yard, should i scale it? nah....

3..2..1... go!!

Comment #11 - Posted by: Jay B. at April 23, 2008 7:53 PM

Can I change the order (move pullups away from pushups) and break it up into 5 sets of 20??

Comment #12 - Posted by: Rajib at April 23, 2008 7:53 PM

Do you have to do them all in sets of 100 like that or can I break it up?

Comment #13 - Posted by: wrk at April 23, 2008 7:54 PM

angie!!! my favorite girl.

Comment #14 - Posted by: PE. in SD at April 23, 2008 7:55 PM

Do not break them up. Do all of one before moving to the next. You can of course do multiple sets to get through one exercise.

Comment #15 - Posted by: Denver Sheepdog M/34/5'9/165#/CFT=880 at April 23, 2008 7:55 PM

Rajib: Sure.. but it won't be "Angie"

Thank goodness.. All I need is a pull-up bar. I'll be on the lookout for one tomorrow.

If worse comes to worse I'll just practice my tree pull-ups :/

Comment #16 - Posted by: AllisonNYC_23/5'2/125 at April 23, 2008 7:56 PM

After the weighted chins, BW feels like nothin'.

Comment #19 - Posted by: mithious at April 23, 2008 8:01 PM

wanted to post this early so people would see it. There was an article in New York Magazine about walking barefoot. They mentioned the Vibram Five Fingers, which have been mentioned several times on this site. Anyway, interesting reading, so I thought I'd post the link:

Comment #23 - Posted by: ben at April 23, 2008 8:05 PM

Bolling's new pull-up bar is nasty, i'm jealous. All these new pull-up bar systems keep one-upping eachother. It's like how roller coasters are always getting a little bigger and better. Maybe someday a CrossFitter will create one that's worthy of the Guiness book? I'll get them on the phone...

Looking forward to Angie tomorrow, my girlfriend is boring me.

Comment #24 - Posted by: sleeveless in seattle at April 23, 2008 8:06 PM

oh my god i'm not going to be able to do this in less than an hour if I want to do full pushups. bring it on.

Jake,

Not as bad as you expected?! Please excuse my ignorance, but how worse can it get?!

Comment #29 - Posted by: Juan Manuel at April 23, 2008 8:12 PM

body weight squats or weighted squats?

Comment #30 - Posted by: Richard at April 23, 2008 8:12 PM

Watching the video, I kept thinking, "Don't dump the weights on the dog."

Comment #31 - Posted by: MikeC1 at April 23, 2008 8:13 PM

video info

10 rounds of the following:
- 225lb squat clean
- muscle ups
- handstand pushups

either 2 squat cleans then 3 mu's then 4 hspu OR 1 squat clean, 3 mu's then 5 hspu. failed attempts count as one rep on the squat cleans (if you disagree w/ this rule, you give it a shot!)

mike's bodyweight - 200lbs
chris's bodyweight - 160lbs

Comment #32 - Posted by: SARdog at April 23, 2008 8:17 PM

All I have to say about that video is...damn son.

Comment #33 - Posted by: Luke H. at April 23, 2008 8:19 PM

Ha So I, instead of resting on rest day decided to make up a workout - Good thing I chose Michael instead of this! Giddy up.

I also can not do a pull up yet. I have been trying to slowly get off the gravitron machine, one of the guys at work is also bound and determined to help me and is spotting me but that puts my arms out of commission for a few days. Any suggestions anyone?? Lat pull downs? I think the problem is I lack lats.

Comment #37 - Posted by: wtp at April 23, 2008 8:22 PM

Nice I have always wanted to do this one ever since I heard that my friend got rhabado after it.

I found out that the outside track has a pull up bar, that means I can finally do real KIPPING PULL UPS! The bar at school only allows me to do a mini kip.

Just to make sure, this workout is done in any order, but you have to finish rep 1 to 100 before switching exercises? In other words I do 100 pull ups then 100 push ups and not 25 Pull ups then 25 push ups 4 times

Comment #38 - Posted by: Adam/TempleOwl M/19/6'2/185 at April 23, 2008 8:23 PM

I did this the other day because I couldn't do back squats - 25:05. That's 3:30 off of a month ago!!! The next day, I did Weighted Pull-ups for the first time - worked up 80#!!! Not bad for 3 months of CF! I love this stuff!

Comment #41 - Posted by: Arthur Morgan at April 23, 2008 8:27 PM

Not complaining, but there seems to be a bit of a theme going with the movies lately.

Comment #42 - Posted by: Monty at April 23, 2008 8:29 PM

Sweet! This will be my first attempt at Angie doing real bodyweight pullups. I subbed her in a week ago for another workout and had shaved 8 minutes off the prior time. Cannot wait!

Comment #43 - Posted by: Brian at April 23, 2008 8:30 PM

OK, loved the video. So eerie and tough. Cool.

No way I am going to be able to do 100 kipping pull ups. I am going to have to do mostly jumping. Those x@! pull ups... why are they taking so long...they frustrate me! I have done 5 kipping in a row then recently I have regressed and can do only one! AHHH!

Comment #44 - Posted by: Gnat/f/34yr/120# at April 23, 2008 8:31 PM

I remember the first time I did Angie......Ripped my hands open on those pullups. Hopefully will do better this time!

Comment #45 - Posted by: Jeff at April 23, 2008 8:34 PM

I believe the tree pullups require a dose of beer and/or whiskey to be 'authentic'. ;-)
Like this one as it is a prep for Murphy.. planning on that one next month.

Comment #49 - Posted by: MarkW at April 23, 2008 8:47 PM

OK, to answer the question, it's 100 pullups, then 100 pushups, then 100 situps, then 100 squats or it's not Angie...

Comment #50 - Posted by: ScottMacArthur at April 23, 2008 8:54 PM

Whoops should have looked at the previous posts before asking the same question. Thanks #15

Comment #51 - Posted by: Adam/TempleOwl M/19/6'2/185 at April 23, 2008 8:54 PM

Anyone ever tried to do this with 20 get ups between the 100s (and 20 to finish off the workout)? I thought they'd be a break from the high reps, but they are the most miserable part.

Comment #52 - Posted by: Mark at April 23, 2008 8:59 PM

to anyone who has already asked or is unsure

the workout is done only in the order as stated and you have to complete all 100 before moving on the next exercise. that's just how it is with angie.

Comment #53 - Posted by: ken c at April 23, 2008 9:01 PM

I'm loving the last two videos. Keep the Transformers coming. Just did a rough workout tonight at Red Rocks Amphitheater for my "rest" day, so might have to skip out on Angie. Although it was the first WOD I did and recently did it for my 1 year CF anniversary on the 9th. Guess I'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Comment #54 - Posted by: Cody_MHC at April 23, 2008 9:06 PM

BUT FFS how simple can it get?
100 pullups
100 pressups
100 situps
100 squats
do it in order, partition as nessesary - thats it.

read the FAQ please, its all there in glorious technicolour complete with pictures, videos, etc.

Appreciate it.

Wow, I don't have a pull-up bar, only rings. I think that mean this will be painful.

Since starting crossfit a few months ago, I will never go back to jogging/ split workouts. This is so much more fun! Every morning when I wake up the crossfit site is the first thing i check. This workout really defines my new motto (stolen of course) "It's going to hurt so good"

Good morning all. Great workout. First time I have even done angie (don't tell g/f). Anyway, I must confess, I started with a defeated attitude. Before I even touched the p/u bar, I was thinking of scaling down. Funny, something came to mind from yesterday's post I think. btw, I hate pullups!

1/2 Angie (all 50s instead of 100s): 4:28. Can't afford a hand tear or callous rip this close to Nationals, hence the reduced Angie.

No breaks on pullups, situps or squats. Three breaks on pushups....I could have been very close to a four minute score if I were stronger on the pushups.

Comment #95 - Posted by: Kelly Moore F/44/5'/114# at April 24, 2008 3:57 AM

23min, which is a full 4:30 off my PR. Explained by the fact that a) this is the first Angie post-injury; and b) morning workout, which is never PR-land for me.

Looks like something my company need dearly, muhahahaha!

Comment #97 - Posted by: Nick T (28m/6'2"/179#) at April 24, 2008 4:02 AM

I started with kipping pullups and then when I could only do one at a time I transitioned to jumping pullups with the occasional kip mixed in. Very painful the whole way through but dagumit I finished. I was lightheaded during the squats, so I took them a little more slowely. I know a lot of you like to throw up after a workout but I don't :)

All kipping pullups (45 on the first set, another pr!)

Squats to medball

Situps still slow, feels like they take forever.

angie, you beee'yatch!

wu

1) 30-35 pullups - mostly strict, some negatives, still trying learn kippings

2) 100 pushups - some with palms flat, some with bars, some with alternating med ball underhand

3) 30 abmat situps

4) 100 air squats + practice overhead squats with 45 lb bar and front squats with 45 lb bar

amazing the swings in weakness. It's embarrassing being able to press 160 over head and only cranking out 30 situps ...and so freakin weak on pullups.

But the intensity was cranked up and I feel fatigued but awesome.

Thanks Angie, you nasty, nasty girl.

Still getting over an upper resp infection I came down with about 2 weeks and having all four of my wisdom teeth extracted the other day.

As a scaled up active recovery workout I did:
Dynamic Mobility Drills as a warm-up
pass-throughs
OVS with PVC

Then completed Angie without a timer.

Took rest b/t reps, sets and rounds as needed.

Felt pretty good. Breathing still heavy.

First ever Angie in 25 min 56 sec.
Warmed up (?) with Muay Thai class then into it. Pull ups 13 min's - strict (can't kip on the bar at the club and can't kip anyhow) didn't have to do jumping but dropped back to sets of 2's and 4's. Push Ups 7 min's. Sit Ups 3 min's (bent leg on the floor). Squats 3 min's (2 kick shields flat on top of each other as a depth marker). Not overly smashed up at the moment. Looking forward to kipping one day.
CrossFit rocks! Been doing it for about 3 months. Not super regular yet but getting there. Huge fitness benefits already.
Cheers.

Rx'd 19:14 (PR by 3:03)

Pullups took 7:23 (about 2:00 faster than last time)
Pushups took 6:03 (~1:00 faster than last)
Situps took 3:53
Squats took 1:55 (60/18/7/15)

The biggest difference in my time was in the pullups and maybe 1:00 in the pushups. I don't think my situps or squats were improved from last time. Didn't feel winded, just muscle fatigue slows me down on this one!

2nd WOD, and I only did a 1/2:

The pullup routine whooped me:
50: 8min. Broke these down into 10's, after the first 2 sets I had to do jumping.
Pushups: Broke down into 25, 10 , 10, 5 - 2:30
Situps: 50 took less than 2 min
Squats: 50 in about 1:30

My obvious weakness is the pullup. Still have a way to go until I do 100 of each.

I think I will try the second half scattered throughout the day.

on behalf of mike, myself and cfjax i want to thank everyone for the compliments on the vid. we tend to take each other for granted since we all train w/ one another on a daily basis. to have people from all over acknowledge our hard work and effort makes it all worthwhile.

i believe this wod took me around sub-17 and mike sub-20 or 22. the squat cleans definitely put molasses into the wod, regardless of a successful or missed attempt. mentally it was tough for me to get under the bar each and every time.

you can't hear the audio in the vid, but yes, neetch, the doberman in the vid, was providing us motivation by telling us to quit being 'vertical smiles' and clock-in and work lol.

great scores and times to everyone on angie today btw!

I was all excited to go outside and get some real kipping in, but the pull up bar at the track was slippery and rotated when I was swinging. That being said the problem was fixed when I got to rep 50 and switched to a mixed grip. I also forgot that the kip is supposed to be violent VIOLent VIOLENT! After the first 20 I was doing sets of 5 every 10 to 15 seconds, at 80 I started to do only 3reps and I got pissed and started to kip harder. I got to 90 and took a 30 second break, then finished with 10 in a row, kipping my ass off!

If anybody sees this post and hasn't done Angie yet remember to KIP YOUR ASS OFF! HARD! HARD! HARD!

A personal trainer left his lesson and promptly came over as I was taking a breather between kipping pullups on the first set and reminded me that unless I control the motion better, sooner or later I will rip a lat. This is the second time this has occurred in this gym and no amount of "I have been doing pullups like this for over two years" or "I don't know anyone who has 'ripped a lat' doing kipping pullups" will convince him otherwise. I felt it was bound to happen sooner or later, I just hoped they wouldn't be as persistant. Anyway...

35 pull-ups, 65 jumping pull-ups (5 better than last time)
push-ups chest-to-floor
DB-anchored situps
squats to medicine ball

Felt good power-wise. Left shoulder starting acting up early during pull-ups, making negatives painful. I felt had the strength to to 50 kipping pull-ups but not the willingness to further hurt my shoulder. Push-ups were the toughest part...failed on a few reps.

I did my PRT for the Navy the day before and got my first Outstanding, improving my push ups by 10 for a total of 77 and sit ups to the max score of 101. Crossfit works, No doubt!. And the video "Big Fat Lies" is really good, I recommend you watch it.

Pain is Temporary...

Two PR's today:

15:53 as rx'd (PR)

40 Pull ups straight!! I think that if I pace my Pull ups I would have a faster Angie but when I got to 30(old PR) I new I could get through it.

#245, Matt (and anybody else who wants to know)

It's always you vs. you, so if you kip this time, then the next time Ms. Angie shows up, you will kip again, so that you're comparing your times on the same workout. Most people kip. You can be sure that if you see a truly stellar time posted, that person kipped.

For all Crossfit exercises involving pullups, it is expected that you will kip, unless the WOD states "Full ROM, no kipping" or something like that (which I've yet to see a WOD rx that). Now, go getcha some!

You should have gone "oh, my lats? They are ripped"

And promptly torn of your shirt, and flex your back muscles at him until he cries. At least, thats what I would have done.

Cool video and awesome work by the guys in it, but some of those catches were looking like a wrist break about to happen and some serious lower back rounding was going on. I was starting to cringe a little. I'd love to try that WOD, but I would consider going down in weight a tad to a more manageable weight with cleaner form. Still, I can't take away the fact the JAX boys did some serious work there!

Comment #281 - Posted by: Ian Carver at April 24, 2008 10:57 AM

Actually did 'Diane' today.

21-15-9
225# deadlift
handstand push-ups

as rx'd: 18:21

First time doing it. I watched a video on crossfit and the guy (can't remember name at the moment) did it in about 5 minutes!!!! WTF!

Anyhow, although tough, the workout was great.

225# deadlift might have been too ambitious for a first Diane. Did 3 at a time the first set. 1 at a time the next two.

Did kipping handstand push-ups. I actually like this exercise. Got the rhythm down after the first 5.

Pain is my companion!

3rd week with CrossFit, 1st time with Angie.

Everything as Rx except pullups. Got 41 and then did the other 59 as jumping pullups.

Read about CF in Muscle and Fitness and started with Andy Petranek's Hell Week as Rxd in the article: Helen, Fran and the Murph were some of my introductions to the program.

Got Chris and Mary Evelyn in Mississippi amped.
Do work, Chris.

this was my third crossfit workout. i'm definitely excited about the crossfit concept and the workouts. kipping looks so easy on the videos, but i guess it's going to take practice. will practice in warm-ups going forward.

need to improve push up endurance as well. i was able to knock out 40 push-ups at first, but upon finishing the 100, i could only do 4-5 at a time.
