rope climbing = bane of my hands existence, I'll definitely have to try that technique Jolie showed though.

Comment #5 - Posted by: David Vessey - 21/M/165 at April 5, 2008 9:15 PM

Speaking of pull-ups...

I drank 6 beers and whiskey at a party after the IFL event the other night.

Of course CrossFit came up in conversation. A few fighters and their friends said that girls just aren't made for pull-ups which started a HUGE debate with all of up resulting in a pull-up contest..

I told them they didn't know what they were talking about because I CAN do at least 25 pull-ups. No one believed me and a few of them scattered to find some kind of bar that I could use to prove my point or have them prove theirs.

One guy finally came running in from outside. He found a tree! I don't like to touch trees but I was set on showing them that chicks can do pull-ups. So we all went outside and Shad picked me up and left me hanging on this stupid tree branch. It was horrible. All the bark was hurting my hands, it was uneven, had to hold, bouncing and too small! Excuses excuses

I ONLY GOT 9!!!! I fee like I let myself and Crossfit down :( I'm SO mad

Alcohol is bad.
I guess I should be happy that I didn't kill myself swinging around like a drunk monkey in a tree or have a bug crawl on me..
I told the guy I'm going to e-mail him a video of me doing pull-ups.

>:(

I've heard of this workout, haven't done it yet. Guess I don't really need skin on my hands for the next 2 weeks. I think it looks cool to walk around with your hands all taped up anyways. This will be fun.

How long does this take people on average? If possible I would like to make up my CFT and this WOD tomorrow, but I might put one off until the rest day. If I need to do that, which one would be best? Also, is anyone else still hurting after the GHD situp and back extension workout? I scaled it and still need a "kip" to sit up in bed! It's like I don't have "abs" anymore, but one big "ab" :) .

I couldn't agree with you more Ken! My CF buddies and I got the honor and pleasure of working out with Barb the last couple of days. We did Gwen and CFT, and let me just tell you - Barb "is the HEAT"! She made a great point when we were chatting it up: "Every CrossFitter that she's met has been friendly, supportive, and encouraging." She couldn't have been more on the money with that - we're all one big family!

It's always refreshing to find yet another CrossFitter in the midst of all of the globo-gym wannabe's.

Sunday musings...

1) It's hard to Zone at a business convention

2) I like wine. Good wine makes me happy (see previous discussion with Hari and Spider Chick). Too much good wine in myself or another makes me unhappy. There is a tippling point that one becomes aware of only after reaching the other side. I try to remember this when I drink good wine.

2) Heroes. Who's your hero (or heroes)? Why? I'm surrounded by the biggest names in my professional world this weekend, men and women of astounding accomplishment/talent/contribution, and yet not a one of them qualifies. Is it because my own accomplishment/talent/contribution is so close to their's (but known only to the tiniest group of cognescendi, all of whom happened to have the same last name as I do) that there just isn't enough separation to create enough awe? Is it because we have the same job and it's just that much more difficult to do something that much better? Or is it that they lack some heroic characteristic, without which professional accomplishment is simply not enough?

What is it that makes a hero?

I don't think there is any one answer for this because we may not all agree, and reasonably so, about the hero-worthiness of any individual. Some may require out-sized accomplishment; others may need to see courage or sacrifice or hardship. You might wish to see a certain selflessness in that person. We could go on and on.

But for me I think it boils down to this: someone who is, or could be, MY hero is someone who for whatever reason inspires me to be a better man.

So who's your hero?

I'll see you next week.

I thought that everyone would enjoy this little crossfit tale.....there I was in the gym finishing my crossfit workout and pushing myself as usual. Well when I finished I was laying on the floor exhausted and sweating with my eyes closed and I "felt" someone over me, so I opened my eyes to a person standing over me asking if I was "OK" and I really should keep my head above my heart or I might pass out. All I could do was laugh and say that I was fine, but thank you for your concern......oh how the non-crossfiters dont get it!

#43: Here is one of my favorite quotes on the subject...

"When the will defies fear, when duty throws the gauntlet down to fate, when honor scorns to compromise with death - that is heroism." --Robert Green Ingersoll

Personally, I think the defining characteristic of heroism is the absolute unwillingness to be defeated. The phrase "indomitable will" comes to mind. It is the idea that you can be beaten, killed, or whatever, but you can't be defeated until you stop fighting.

Comment #74 - Posted by: Kevin 24/M/5'10"/165 at April 6, 2008 8:46 AM

#61 Liz -

Start a timer. As soon as you start the timer, do one pullup. Wait until minute 2 starts. Do two pullups. Wait until minute 3 starts. Do three pullups......etc....

You can break up the pullups as many times as needed within the minute. Say it's the start of minute 10 and you can only do eight total reps before the start of minute 11 - the WOD is done. Your result would be 9 full rounds + 8 reps.

I hope this helps.

But to answer your question, just do what you can manage...if you can manage actual PUs (even 2 or 3), then do that. Then switch to negatives, then Jumping...you want to get as many rounds as possible...Just note what you did, and it's all good. You need to personalize the program to suit your needs and level of fitness (in whatever pathways/movements you're short on).
If you're new don't forget the CFWU. Check out the FAQ and starting sections on the main site. Get on the forum and get using the search function...LOTS of cool stuff posted in there.

On Sunday musing heroics:
Heroism is usually unintentional. An ordinary person doing the extrordinary. Unfortunately, for most performance takes precedent over character. The unsung hero is the perfect model of good character. Someone who does what is right for the right reasons, not for personal edification. What greater love is there then this: that one would lay down his life for his friends.

Haven't posted to HQ in a while. Waiting for my gym equipment to arrive so I've been improvising in the park!

Made it out to Inner Strength Crossfit in Smyrna, GA. Nick is a very gracious host and great coach!

Pull-up ladder WOD:
14 rounds + 10 more pullups.
(I think that's 115 pullups... holy cow!)
I also got 3 rips on my hands.

Did a 2nd wod afterward...

Comment #113 - Posted by: Shana A. in ATL at April 6, 2008 11:00 AM

First time ever posting here. I've been fairly active on Crossfit for about a year now and I LOVE it!! I'm a normal, working, single father with 2 kids in all kinds of sports so time is very hard to come by for crossfit. At the same time, I absolutely HATE if I miss a day. My back and surgically repaired knee problems are a thing of the past. Coincidence?? Maybe, but I doubt it. I still struggle and can't complete many of the WOD's as rx'd, but if it were that easy then what would be the point, right? I both fear and relish the inevitable feeling of utter exhaustion, dizziness, and puking. This is now not just my hobby but my way of life.

Thanks for the very kind words! Geez--I'm sitting here in my hotel room in Scotland (drinking some of that fine wine mentioned by Bingo in comment #43) and blushing.

I really enjoyed working out with your CF cadre at Ramstein, Brian. I wouldn't have pushed myself anywhere near as hard as I did had I been at home.

I feel that I've really found a family here and I meant what I said the other day--every other CF'er I've met (and I've been to a very big cert in SD last August) has been caring, compassionate, and giving.

If any of my CF family ever finds themselves in El Paso, Texas drop by to my garage gym for a WOD--you're always welcome.

May not be able to do too many workouts for the next couple of days here in Scotland, but I'm going to see about dropping into CrossFit Central Scotland while I'm here (it's not real close to where I'm staying).

Great job by everyone so far!

First time doing this WOD so everything was a PR.

14 Rds + 8. I coasted through about 5 or 6 rds with strict form then had to throw in quite a few jumpers. A total of 113 p/u's.

I did yesterday's WOD too, before my pullups. This was my first time doing this WOD as well so naturally these numbers are my PR's.

Squat - 230#
Shoulder Press - 140#
Dead Lift - 385#
Total - 755# (A little disappointed in this WOD but i'm sure after doing CF for a while longer I will definitely improve.)

I also did some 300+ lbs. tire flipping relays in my backyard for time. All of this put together was an interesting workout.

I hope everyone has a great Sunday. See you all tomorrow.

#43, Bingo asks,

"What is it that makes a hero?" and asks why for him, some of his most esteemed colleagues don't seem to fit the bill.

When we’re young, our heroes are people who have accomplished great things that we hope someday to match. Children typically pick a favorite sports figure. At a young age, we don’t appreciate that great accomplishment can be a function not only of talent (something most of us are not endowed with in any great quantity) but also of determination, struggle, and sacrifice . A child may feel sorry for a handicapped athlete, while an adult may feel awestruck.

As we mature, we recognize that talent is distributed randomly, and our heroes move from those who have simply been endowed with great talent and made the most of it to those who have made extraordinary and difficult choices requiring characteristics like courage, effort, selflessness, and principle, characteristics to which most of us have accesses, but only at great personal cost.

As a child, if you told me that some guy stood in front of a moving tank in the middle of the street, I would have thought, “what a dope.” But as an adult, when I saw the picture of a peaceful protester standing down a tank in the middle of Tiananmen Square, I was stunned speechless and needed someone else to put into perspective what I was seeing:

"But history teaches that empires do not break up voluntarily; dictators never dictate freedom; totalitarian state do not overthrow themselves. The sad truth is that the tree of liberty is indeed nourished by patriot blood. The thousands of Brave young Chinese who were killed did not, in Lincoln's phrase, die in vain; their sacrifice will lead their people out of Communist bondage."

Beat old pr of 16 rounds.
I'm obsessed with G4 TV shows ninja warrior and ultimate bansuke. On bansuke, they had a competition of 1 min man situps, 1 min max back extension, 1 min max push up for a total of 3 minutes. Each rep was counted by hitting a part of your chin/head on a counter to count the rep. The clock did not stop for 3 minutes so transitions had to be quick. I tried this as a warmup to the wod and got 134.

52 hours after GHD wod, still in constant pain with limited mobility. Obviously I'm no stranger to muscle soreness -- extreme DOMS, spasms, burst blood vessels, strains, tears, etc, BTDT. I think it's largely the location, the centrality of these muscles and their role in all body movement and posture that is so uniquely unpleasant. Can't stand up straight, and it takes a long time to settle into a flat lying position. The only relief I've had, onset after 4-5 rounds of the PU ladder.

did a 5k trail run charity race post workout and ran it in 21 min. A full 2 min faster than last year, all thanks to crossfit. I came in 3rd place. A 150 pound classic long distance runner passed me with a km to go and I knew that if I kept him in sight I could beat him on the 400m track portion of the finish. That is exactly what happened and in fact I almost caught the second place runner in that 400.

Open Letter and class review for Crossfit Certification Seminar in Atlanta on April 5-6:

Thank you for teaching me real intensity.

We can read about intensity, talk about intensity, and hell, even watch various flavors of intensity on video - but - nothing can match the actual experience of ass-in-the-fire intensity.

I got exactly what I wanted out of this class.

I'm no trainer, nor do I want to be a trainer; instead, I came to certification class to find the holes in my training.

I found them.

and, in fact, discovered that perhaps, I haven't really ever been *really* training.

More than ever I believe Crossfit is the real deal. It struck me during some of the lectures, that Crossfit is nothing new --- it's really just a packaging of all the training types that are proven to work because they are required "in real work", be that real of fire fighters, law enforcement, military, or as instructor Pat liked to say, "carrying your kids and groceries from the car"

This no ass-kiss post. There were periods where I got bored, but that's mostly during the discussions more geared to towards training and training business - which I just don't care about - so there, I am being a little selfish.

Also, while I can subscribe to some of Nicole's Zone preaching concepts, much of the trainers seem to be single, without kids, which makes writing down everything you eat, measuring everything and being super intense about diet just a little more difficult. If you don't want to alienate the rest of your family and friends, it's a real challenege to find that fine line between doing what's 100% best for yourself, and participating in real life with your family.

The technique training was the incredibly helpful --- knowing how to deadlift, clean, squat and snatch correctly are strong reasons for my attendance and most of the training attention focused on these, and relative, movements.

nice...

Shout outs to Pat, Nicole, Media Guy, Mike G, the Marine from Florida, Jelli, and all the other trainers who spent the necessary time with this sweaty, stinky dude who thought he knew something, but came away finding out he has a lot more to learn and work on to improve.

...a lot more Crossfit training to do.

But isn't that why we're here?

Thanks and Cheers!

18 full + 16 reps, way down from last time. Not too surprised this WOD took at hit, but I approached it with the intention of besting my last performance. It's been too long since I worked at these so that's the reason I didn't PB. Grip was a factor and then I just died at round 17, all previous sets were straight through. Elbows are throbbing.

It's possible I did round 12 twice, who knows. No extra points for not paying attention.

Post-Tabata push ups and SQUATS (for the first time in a while, my cranky ankie held up) 78 and 128. Push ups brutal post-J.T. just two days ago.

I was using a pull up bar outside my bedroom and my grip SUCKED! wasn't so much my hands giving out on me, just the sweat on the bar was givin me the damnedest time. Felt really good tonight, I had to push it because today was my cheat day from the zone. I've been strict zone all week and feel totally awesome. I had ice cream for my cheat food and I almost couldn't finish it....almost :) The zone is really the way to go I'm just feeling great.

VERY impressed by all the 40+ age group. I'm m/41/6'/215. Did 9rds. Kinda embarrassed to say Doing more than 10 rds seems very impressive to me. Especially #300! 45 yo and whipping them out like that? NICE! Not sure what kipping is. So, I didn't do it.
