Great job to our member Fred Gokey, he did an rx'd "Fran" in his full Firefighter gear. The video is coming, and hopefully HQ might even put in on the main page. He is a real hero!

Good article, interesting read. The author brings up some interesting points and, of course, is immediately attacked in the comments. Regardless of how you feel about the issue, you should remember, both sides have agendas and not everyones is for the good of humanity.

Comment #8 - Posted by: Corey at March 9, 2008 7:59 PM

Why is every one who is concerned about the environment labeled as a leftist? Let's break this whole thing down to one very simplistic experiment. Would every body who believes that mankind is not contributing to environmental warming and the poisoning of the environment please go into a garage with a car running for 30 minutes. If you survive I will believe your rants. Imagine over 1 billion cars a day and thousands, if not more, of coal/gas burning electric plants putting hundreds of thousands of tons of emissions into the atmosphere. Where does it all go?

We're mortgaging our children's future for the benefit of a short term bottom line. Why can't we stop looking at the next quarterly report and instead think about the future ten years out?

Sure lots of global warming can be explained by environmental conditions. But, does that vindicate us for adding to it?

Comment #11 - Posted by: Ed at March 9, 2008 8:13 PM

The comments on the article are genius:

"A PhD can get $500k/yr to parrot Exxon/Mobil’s lines or $65k/yr to work at USGS or NOAA and the latter is taking payola for cashing his fat government paycheck?"

There goes the entire payola argument. There is still plenty of debate about why and what is causing global warming, but denying that it is happening is, at this point, just being ignorant.

Also I love that this "professor" is so ignorant of the scientific method that he believes how something is financed determines whether it is true or not. Tell me this, since we are all going to take Bush's Chinese economic stimulus money this tax season, doesn't that invalidate all of your opinions on anything political?

i usually dont get in to these political debates, however, before i switched paths to physiology i was working towards a master's in environmental biology. at the time, i was doing some pretty ground breaking work on localized environmental issues in KY and the result we were getting from our study was not what our initial hypothesis presumed. the harm we had thought to been done to the surrounding environment was not the case (the particular type of "harm" we were studying was not global warming though and if any of you would like further explanation on this, feel free to email me).

my point with all this is in regard to bkedelen, #14s, statement about financing determining the scientific method...the professor overseeing my research at the time said "even though the results aren't what we had initially thought, we can SKEW THE RESULTS TO SUIT OUR NEEDS"...(needs meaning grant money that he was hurting for at the time). i will NEVER forget those words for the rest of my life and after completing that semester, switched majors to my passion in life instead of looking for the "truth" through science...bc in my opinion, there is no truth in a science the skews its results to fit the needs of those pursuing it...

Do we make McDonalds fix the overwieght people that may eat their product? If it is so darn easy to fix you would think someone would provide a product to capitalize on the pro global warming consumers. Oh someone already has it's called a bicycle. we've known about global warming for 30 years. nobody in washington has wanted to do anything about it, fearing they would be branded as having harmed the economy. is bush more to blame than clinton, each of whom wasted their 8 years of potential leadership on the issue? bush probably has a little more to be sorry for, since he and his staff have not only sat on their hands, but actively suppressed information and politicized the role of science advisors to a level that seems far greater than ever before. sooner or later, we're going to have a carbon tax. it makes no sense to allow utilities to give us "cheap" energy while poisoning us with mercury and destroying the ecosystem.

Comment #26 - Posted by: joe p at March 9, 2008 9:35 PM

#21 cletus,

You've hit on the fundamental economic difference between publicly- and privately-funded science. Publicly-funded science requires that the scientists be consistent in their results to receive funding, otherwise the government agencies funding the research conclude the scientists in question are incompetent. Privately-funded science requires that the results conform to reality, otherwise the funding body will go out of business following the scientists recommendations and other businesses will be reluctant to hire those scientists.

However, global warming doesn't necessarily fit this pattern because the environmental consequences are a long way off (about a degree per century change, in spite what the talking heads claim about our unseasonably warm winter being caused by global warming), but I do know that since the legislative bodies of the world's governments have latched onto global warming, it has ceased to be an economic or environmental issue, but rather is entirely political and is yet another mechanism by which politicians can acquire power.

The truth or falsity of the proposition is no longer of consequence.

#26 joe p,

30 years ago people were talking about global cooling...

Comment #28 - Posted by: Chris H at March 9, 2008 9:44 PM

The climate is such huge, complex and unpredictable system that I think it's naive for anyone to say anything about it with any certainty. While I'm certain that money flow motivates some people to "adapt" their research, others are motivated by politics or just by the prevailing intellectual "wind."

I'm also reminded of Mark Twain: "There are three kinds of lies: Lies, damned lies and statistics."

I don't know, with any certainty, if global warming is human caused, human influenced or entirely a natural trend. The bigger threat to the environment, in my mind, is the sheer number of us and what it takes to maintain that number and continue to make more of us.

Comment #29 - Posted by: Joe B1 at March 9, 2008 10:50 PM

My two cents:

Te article, in my opinion, is a non starter. Of course people, including scientists, keep an eye on where the money is coming from and its no surprise that scientists do not bite the hand that feeds them. This is not a shock to me.

About environmentalism:
If you want to create more people in the world who care about the environment, you must create a wealthier world population.

In other words, the only people in the world who care about the environment are rich folks and they probably got that way because their government was open to capitalism.

If your starving, you do not give a hoot about what kind of planet your children will be inheriting. You'll gladly burn a rain forest to make room to plant crops to feed your kids. If you want to counter this argument than please name the impoverished nation that has a policy on the environment that involves controls on emissions.

Have Fun, Train Hard,

Billy

sorry to get off topic, but after doing Lynne yesterday, I had a couple of questions.

first, I only got 11 reps over 5 rounds (4-3-2-1-1) of bw (205#) bench. is it better to get only a couple of reps/round as rx'd or drop the weight a little and do more reps?

second, do pull-ups only count if the chin makes it up over the hands? how can I work on just the last 3-4 inches of the motion?

thanks for the great workouts. keep it coming.

Comment #31 - Posted by: Evan at March 9, 2008 11:38 PM

I have another question concerning "Lynne". When I started crossfit a few months ago I weighed a lean 220 and was repping my bodyweight for close to ten reps on barbell press. Each time this workout comes up, I am decreasing in performance even with lighter weight since I now weight 210 after leaning out more on the zone diet and crossfit workouts. Shouldn't I be getting stronger? It's very, very disappointing.

Comment #32 - Posted by: Cody at March 10, 2008 12:29 AM

f: 35/5'7/60 kg (132lb)

After quite a few rest days I completed Lynne. Sorta used it as more of a gage to see where I'm at re bench-pressing my bw, which is a non-starter by the way!! but I'm definately stronger and curious now to see what my 1 rep max might be.

5 rounds and 5 reps:

BP: 30kg
half my bw and 5kg heavier than I've benched before.

PU: kipped all the way!
and did a wee dance of joy after my first set cos it's the first time I've 'got the kip' and managed 5 unbroken PUs.

Yes, global warming is a leftist conspiracy implemented by scientists as a get rich quick scheme!

To think that there is more money to be gained by convincing people global warming is real, as compared to the plausible deniability of its existence is ridiculous. Energy companies have far more profits to gain if people think global warming isn't an issue.

I find it disturbing that a community full of people dedicating themselves to being as healthy and fit as possible, don't at least have SOME skepticism when big business tells them nothing is wrong with something as important as the environment. I think I'm going to go ask a crack dealer if crack is bad, and I'm sure i'll get an honest answer from them.

1) 30 years ago we did not "know about global warming." Kids were being taught about the coming ice age and global cooling. This back and forth has been going on for over a century.
2) In the last 12 months the earth has cooled more than global warming alarmist have said the globe has warmed over the past 100 years.
3) The ebb and flow of the temperature seems to corresponds an awful lot with the cycle of the sun.

Despite CO2 emmissions having risen over the past 9 years by 4%, the average temperature on earth has remained exactly the same.
Does anyone remember being a kid in the early eighties and listening to your geography teacher talk about the general ice-age trend that scientists were predicting, based upon cooling trends in Europe? What happened?
My 10 day forecast on weather.com is rarely right. How do scientists, who have wildly varying interests and loyalties, have any idea what is going to happen to this immense natural system in 10 or 100 years?
"We rely on the Sun for warmth, and water vapour (the principal greenhouse gas) ensures that we have a reasonably equable climate. The effect on climate of human-induced carbon dioxide emissions is negligible." (kininmonth and fox, http://www.lavoisier.com.au/papers/articles/kinin-fox.html )

Mods: reposted as I think I forgot my name and email.

I mentioned last time putting together a blog post. I did, here: http://www.moderatesunited.blogspot.com/

However, since spending a day writing that post, I have realized the issue can be simplified greatly.

1. Anthropogeneic Global Warming cultists lie. Al Gore was recently told that his film had to come with a warning label to be shown to British school children. That label read, in effect: Propaganda, not science.

Link here: http://scienceandpublicpolicy.org/monckton/goreerrors.html

I will emphasize his errors were not deviations from the ideas of skeptics, but from his own experts, most notably the members of the IPCC. For his work, Gore got the Nobel Prize and an Oscar.

2. With respect to glacial time, our period is predictable. There are clearly periods of warming, which are followed closely by periods of increasing CO2. If you look a the following two graphs, you realize that our warming--and associated CO2 levels are fully unexceptional:

This picture is historical temperatures, from the oft-cited Vostok ice core: http://cdiac.ornl.gov/trends/temp/vostok/graphics/tempplot5.gif

This is historical CO2 levels: http://cdiac.ornl.gov/trends/co2/graphics/vostok.co2.gif

You will note temperatures--and lagging CO2 levels--have been rising for some 10,000 years, in part of what any rational assessment would instantly see is a natural cycle.

3. Finally, the Anthropogenic Global Warming hypothesis is remarkably slippery with respect to falsification. The scientists of what is now termed the Climate Change non-debate won't say just what would falsify their hypothesis, which technically makes it a conjecture.

However, their models can be replicated with a simple heuristic, in which the value of one of their variables--lambda--is .303. This value expresses the net effect of complete or partial CO2 doublings on atmospheric temperatures. It "predicts" to a high level of accuracy what was seen in the last century.

In order to generate truly apocalyptic scenarios--and enough corresponding hysteria to get their World Socialist Government in place--they have to increase this value 2-3 times over, which is empirically unjustifiable.

However, since the relative importance of CO2 is much greater higher in the atmosphere, specifically the upper troposphere, than at ground level (the lower troposphere), we would expect 2-3 degrees of warming there for every degree we see on the surface. For that reason, they would, if honest, predict that our highly accurate satellite measurements in that region would show rising if in fact their models are correct.

Those satellites have shown nothing, and their reaction has been to ignore the evidence.

Additionally, their models predicted temperature increases of 2-3 degrees more than what we had seen this time last year, and their response was to say it had gone to the oceans. We don't have detailed, long term readings of the deep ocean, but what we do have shows no change. This means both the proposed mechanism of the preferential warming of the deep ocean, and COMPLETE failure of their predicted surface results to appear should give--to any objective eye--the lie to their supposed conformity with scientific methods and ethics.

Finally, in actual fact the world got colder last year: http://www.dailytech.com/Temperature+Monitors+Report+Worldwide+Global+Cooling/article10866.htm

In the past, they have blamed this on particulates resulting from industrial activity. However, this no longer works, so they are in effect ignoring this result, calling it a statistical outlier, and carrying on. They still, though, have not made any statements as to what would falsify their conjecture, meaning that it still has not risen yet to the level, formally, of a high school physics project. They would currently get an F with adult supervision.

Comment #45 - Posted by: Barry Cooper at March 10, 2008 5:36 AM

One in the hopper. Should pop out around number 41.

It contains, I think, everything anyone wanting to assess the science dispassionately would need. This issue has recently become much simpler for me, since I spent the time to get a basic understanding of the math.

Comment #46 - Posted by: Barry Cooper at March 10, 2008 5:40 AM

If you read Nancy Pelosi's essay in the World in 2008 from the Economist, you will see that those who have bought into the human-induced global warming idea have summarily dismissed any ideas besides those which they read about in An Inconvenient Truth and my sister's 7th grade report on saving the planet.

Disclaimer: Shopping related post.

I went to Dick's Sporting Goods (I believe they're national), yesterday, to pick up some clips. Of course they were out. But they were selling a 45# Olympic bar for $10. Yes, as the salesperson I tracked down told me, it's the chrome kind that comes with the 300# set, of which they receive extras, and sell when they have a surplus. It's worth checking into if you're in need of an extra bar. I snagged one, and lo and behold, it came with clips. I wouldn't be surprised if other sporting goods chains did the same.

"Would every body who believes that mankind is not contributing to environmental warming and the poisoning of the environment please go into a garage with a car running for 30 minutes. If you survive I will believe your rants."

Sounds kind of inhumane. Another experiment we could do is put everyone in a room and release 10lbs of sulfer dioxide into the room and see how long everyone lasts. Wouldn't probably be too long huh? Interestingly enough, that is less than 1/2,000,000 the amount of sulfer dioxide a single volcanic eruption can release in just a few hours. Not to mention it is actually launched high into the stratosphere, unlike the carbon emmissions from my car.

Just something to think about. Love some of the discussions today. I was actually talking about the same topic as this article with my wife this morning.

What is kind of funny to me about the comments so far is how quickly it turned into a "global warming is happening you idiots" vs. "you have no proof so stfu lefty" type argument. That is not even what this article is about, it is about how money talks and it can "influence" science. It also talks about low fat high carb diets and recycling, but for some reason people did latch on to those. Interesting...

As a self professed FNG, after scrolling by the welcome “Rest Day” Rx I noticed that included was a fairly provocative article. The human body sadly has a limit to how far it can develop. If it didn't, we all would be breaking world records. I believe that we aren't anywhere near the threshold of the limits for the mind. As posted by Jamie- "Yes, global warming is a leftist conspiracy implemented by scientists as a get rich quick scheme!"

Global warming is a leftist conspiracy to further control and regulate freedom. As are all leftist conspiracies. Leftists only know how to make money through government regulation. Those just getting rich off of it are capitalists and those that think they should be at the top of the decision making process. Che could not write better rhetoric himself for why the "people" need to take back power.

this whole thing is crap. look at the sky. there is a burning ball of fire that is 7-8 light seconds away that farts at the right time and causes satellite damage. It gets a belly ache and our poles shift.

Now we find that plastic bags are not that bad and don't take 35 thousand years to biodegrade (anyone who has ever left a plastic bag on the rear dash in a Texas summer could have clarified this).

Then we have people talking about turning their cars on in their garage for half an hour and dying. What does asphyxiation have to do with this?

Look, I go to the grocery store. The meat-stick bagging my groceries says paper or plastic.. Change that, actually I go through the self-serve line. Mostly because I like playing with the scanner.

So, I can chose paper or plastic. I chose plastic. Why? Because it came from the earth. All those jerks who bring their own bags don't care about the environment. I do. I am trying to get as many of those plastic bags into the garbage as I can. That way they go to the land fills and with time become oil again. So it is like I am actually helping nature (at my own expense which is at least as noble as my effort I might add) put that petroleum back in the ground ASAP.

Why do I not chose paper? Because I want a Log home someday. Well if people keep using paper bags, that drives up demand, thus shrinking supply of logs to make my future home.

So not only am I doing noble work helping the earth by putting as many plastic bags as I can into the landfills, I am getting screwed by the environmental movement who keeps pushing paper or canvas shopping bags on everyone. Plus, they want me to remain in my little house with my little gym and know my role. This is strange because I promise I would cut down a very large swath of trees they could use to make more paper bags.

Now I ask, who really care about the environment?

As for Global Warming. Ya right. I wish. Do you know how much I had to spend on diesel fuel to keep my gym warm with my torpedo style heater, just to keep the bars warm enough? Probably $100 over the last several months. That is unacceptable, because I believed in the global warming hype, I only budgeted $75. It is like these GW types want me to go out of business or something, which being leftists, they probably do.
Luckily we had plenty of plastic bags to burn.

Fool me once

Being able to bench a lot is not a CrossFit priority. I too have lost some chest strength, but being able to bench is lot is not really all that functional. I used to be able to bench 325 now I don't know what I can bench, but probably only 300 now or so. My first Lynne I did 11,8,7,6,6 with 220 this time I did 11,9,7,5,5 with 210. So I did one less rep overall with 10 less lbs. That is the only lift that has gone down though, although my shoulder press dropped for awhile also. I just accepted my max lifts were going to do down some but I was going to be in better health. I'm sure if I ate some more I would get more strength back, but that is not really what I am going for at this point.

Privately-funded science requires that the results conform to reality, otherwise the funding body will go out of business following the scientists recommendations and other businesses will be reluctant to hire those scientists."

Capitalism at it's finest, eh? Privately-funded science has the fundamental goal of increased profits for it's parent company. That's it, no other primary goal. How do they accomplish that? Well, producing and becoming known for accurate science would be one way. Producing results consistent with what would be best or most convenient for their sponsors want would be another way. If it's a construction company consulting scientists to help build a building, truth is primary. If it's an oil company consulting scientists about global warming because they "care" about the issue, then the best option for the consulting company is to produce an answer that will help the oil company's bottom line. For the construction company, truth helps it's bottom line, for the oil company, not so.

Sure, it doesn't help their reputation, but that's an issue public AND private. If gov't agencies (like the NSF?) have motives, they are certainly less overt than private companies' motives.

To assume that "excellence -> market success" is the ONLY way capitalism works out is suggesting you need your head checked. It is simply *A* way, of which crossfit is one of a few examples. The truth is most people start companies or get jobs for the potential money involved.

I do completely agree with you, #27, that now that global warming has become completely politicized, truth is no longer an issue on anyone's front in the (political) debate, and we need some people like Taubes to go through it all and take really rigorous approach to figuring it out. Perhaps someone has already. At any rate, none of us have done that, and so we are not qualified to argue in that debate.

And to #50, "I always enjoy reading CCTJOEY's remarks. So clever." Ya, but he's also flamboyant and one sided.

Boy, am I disappointed - I usually count on The Economist for having the most reasonable journalists possible writing their material. Hey everyone, Im going to start gearing myself up for the crazy crap you guys do. I was curious as to whether you all thought that it would be a good idea to work on being able to complete the official warm up before moving on to the WODs? I was thinking of taking a month or so (4 weeks) to build on the official warm up just to get my body accustomed to various movements.

Thanks.

For anyone interested I am shaving my head for an amazing event this coming Saturday 15 March 2008.

My wepage is: http://www.stbaldricks.org/participants/shavee_info.html?ParticipantKey=2008-38239

Please take the time to review the site and if you fill compelled donate to the cause.

Every child deserves a childhood...what better community to donate to the fight than this one.

Thanks,

Sully

St. Baldrick's is the world's largest volunteer-driven fundraising event for childhood cancer research. Thousands of volunteers shave their heads in solidarity of children with cancer, while requesting donations of support from friends and family.

At a St. Baldrick's event, something amazing happens. People who normally shy away from the very thought of childhood cancer find themselves compelled to support this cause after looking into the face of these brave children who are smiling broadly as their friends and family members proudly display their newly shorn heads.

Volunteers and donors see it can be fun to support a serious cause. Young cancer patients and survivors see how many people care. And researchers see St. Baldrick's funds helping to find cures!

5% of worlds population that would be us consumes more 30% of worlds resources. India and china are just roaring to go saying "If america can do it so can we".
It does not require a PHD or Oil company money to see that "its going to run out".
Even if global warming is a myth it is the fear Americans need to consume less. As that is what works best in this country "fear", bush has shown that over and over.
Its not about going from one extreme to the other its about moderation.

they're called xtreme rings

i put them up in my garage to see if ring dips are 3-4 times harder. that seems like a pretty fair assessment.

You said:
Why do I not chose paper? Because I want a Log home someday. Well if people keep using paper bags, that drives up demand, thus shrinking supply of logs to make my future home.

I'm thinking that in the short term the cost of logs might go up, but that in the long term some wise entrepreneurial capitalists would buy a lot of land and start sustainable logging on them to not only provide you with paper bags but also tons of logs for your sweet log home. Choosing paper might actually drive down the cost (inflation adjusted of course) by the time you are ready to buy. Plus, all those tree will suck up CO2 while t hey grow and I know you care about that! :)

Comment #66 - Posted by: Corey at March 10, 2008 8:19 AM

I don't know that it is a "conspiracy", but to deny that there is money involved in the research is ridiculous. Lots of research has some sort of slant, or is grant funded, etc, etc. I personally think that there should be a little more oversight into what kind of "research" goes on, especially in higher education. The lack of oversight- deemed to be academic freedom gets a little ridiculous. This is why there are papers entitled "feminist marxists tranvestite contributions to globalization" (No, not really, but I wouldn't be surprised.

If your job depends on continued research, guess where your vote will go?? To those who want to continue research on that topic. Just for the same reason that an engineer at a weapons facility would probably lean to the right.

I've asked this question many places, but will ask again here, and address it to those who want to deny the fundamentally non-scientific, political nature of this issue: what would prove the so-called Consensus wrong?

This is a foundational, core issue that cannot be ignored or side-stepped by anyone wanting to claim that science has anything to do with this.

Warren,

What does that have to do with anything? Surely you are just being unnecessarily abusive if you otherwise lack the capacity to engage on topic using facts and logic? Joey is quite capable--and willing--to defend himself, but for my part I will ask that simple question.

The debate is over and anthropogenic global climate change is now established scientific fact. (See how I worked that in there, it's not "warming " any more) Any data that doesn't conform to this view is therefore, by definition, erroneous, falsified or improperly interpreted.

A glacier could could gouge it's way all the way to the Senate floor, polar bears could eat his kids, woolly mammoths could trample Tipper, and Gore would find a way to blame it on CO2 emissions.

Equating the low fat fad to burning fossil fuels is an inaccurate comparison. More spot on would be to equate burning fossil fuels with smoking.

Comment #77 - Posted by: gabriel at March 10, 2008 11:24 AM

Gabriel #76

No, it's a really good comparison. If global warming is like low-fat then an SUV is like pan fried bacon. Even the Atkins folks would tell you that eating too much of that is pushing it.

There's no denying that driving a gas guzzling vehicle of any kind is wasteful. That's a far cry from classifying CO2 as a pollutant and declaring that the ice caps are going to melt and drown everyone in Florida if we don't shut down our factories and power plants.

Comment #78 - Posted by: RifRafRob at March 10, 2008 11:58 AM

I have been a devoted CrossFit practitioner since October of 2005. I found that it has allowed me to push myself beyond physical and mental limitations. It has prepared me for the eventuality of combat better than any other program I have tried. Also, it has introduced me to a whole community of remarkable folks.

I have recently come to find that some CrossFit gyms are charging exorbitant rates for their memberships (upwards of $300/month). I find this absurd and against all of what I thought CrossFit was established for. CrossFit purports itself to be staunch supporters of our military, but what military member, officer or enlisted, could possibly afford gym memberships that are so expensive? Not too mention the legion of civilian CrossFitters that do not fit into the required income bracket. I embraced CrossFit because of the challenges and the rejection of traditional exclusionary, rigid and greedy main-stream fitness clubs.

It was my understanding that CrossFit could take Joe or Jill Average and turn them into healthy and fit elite athletes. Evidently they can, but only if Joe or Jill have the cash to foot the outrageous bill.

I realize that access to this website is free. But with charging the excessive rates that they do, are those gyms staying true to the spirit of CrossFit?

#9, well put, how can you even argue with his analogy? It's annoying to read people pick apart a completely sound metaphor with nonsense.

None of us knows what the extent of our impact environmentally in this world is, but there are so many ways to look at the situation rationally and not politically that lead to the conclusion that humans are or can impact the earth in a harmful way.

Between deforestation, increase in population, burning of fossil fuels, CFC's, chemical runoff, biomagnification, dead zones in the Mississippi delta, pesticides, herbicides, chem-lawn, etc.

We have definitely impacted this earth in a negative way; it's illogical to think otherwise.

Comment #99 - Posted by: Kevin_R at March 10, 2008 3:14 PM

I feel like both sides always fail to mention the good news about this topic: The science keeps getting done.

The fact there are two competing, well-funded groups of scientists studying this means we will, eventually, get closer to the truth. Will some scientists skew results to try and please benefactors or increase their grants? Sure. But the scientific method of demanding repeatable, predictable results will always eventually cull the herd. It may take 20, 30 years. As a casual fan of science history, it seems to me this is not a long time at all, science-wise. Getting from Kitty Hawk to the moon in 60-odd years kind of got us all spoiled and edgy.

And this research from both sides, will, if nothing else, reward us with an unprecedented understanding of the planet we inhabit as well as a ton of offshoot technologies we will soon take for granted. I can tell you the interest in this stuff has certainly created a slew of new construction products and materials. A few are great, a few are crap, but if the interest wasn't there, the r&d wouldn't have been done.

The question of Human Induced Global Warming is an important one. It is important for us to know if it is true or false. With the resources being poured into the science, one day we will, beyond all reasonable doubt. There are a lot of other important questions out there, with teams of scientists working away on them, just *wishing* they had the "Where did you get all this money?" problem.

A note: Again, as a casual science history fan, I'd point out an overwhelming majority of bad science in history seems motivated far more by ego and petty jealousies than cash.

Carbon dioxide is not the only emission that comes from internal combustion.

Sure, we create technologies such as catalytic converters that reduce pollution threats initially but that does not reduce the threat entirely.

Personally, I am of the opinion that green technologies will have a net growth effect on our economy. Reducing the importance of foreign oil can only help us not hinder us.

How many deaths has the alarmist ringing on climate change caused? Compare that to the amount of deaths and wasted tax dollars that alarmist ringing on WMD's and Al Qaeda in Iraq has caused.

Our economy is poised for a major revamp and the alternative is not pretty. Gas vehicles are going the way of the dinosaur and people are going to have to change their habits. The question is how soon are we willing to let this happen, or how soon will we make it happen.

The main problem with the discussion of moving to alternatives to fossil fuels to power our society is that 2 things need to be addressed at once - electricity generation and vehicle fuel.

Wind, solar, and nuclear could easily power our electrical grid. But 60% of all the oil we burn in the U.S. (upwards of 20 million barrels of it every day) is burned in the tanks of our cars. Until we have viable PHEVs and EVs on the roads, we can't power our cars with solar power.

What most people fail to mention when discussing MMGW, either pro or con, is that the best answer to the problem is capitalism. There are many large fortunes to be made and many hundreds of thousands of jobs to be created in this country designing, constructing, and maintaining a renewable energy infrasctructure for both the electrical grid and the vehicle fleet. And with every jump in oil prices, it becomes more compelling to do this for purely economic reasons. This latest jump in oil prices will cost the U.S. consumers over 127 billion at the pumps over the next year.

Add to the economic reasons to aggressively pursue alternative energy such as national security, price stability, etc, and pretty soon the argument doesn't hinge on a belief in MMGW at all.

This isn't my strongest subject.

But of course I'm a doubter of anthropogenic global climate change. What caused the ice age? Why did it stop? How did the ice caps originally form?
I agree with Don most bad science is ego driven not greed driven but that doesn't mean there can't be an entrepreneurial sect of the greenies.
Of course GE Silvan and other light bulb companies would like it to be legislated for new Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLB)to be mandatory so that we will use less energy and save the planet.
http://opinionjournal.com/extra/?id=110011070

One problem; these CFLB also have an environmental cost. Like all Fluorescent light bulbs they have mercury vapor. That's right vapor, the kind you can breathe. If one is broken the EPA recommends the following
http://www.epa.gov/mercury/spills/index.htm#flourescent
1. Have people and pets leave the room, and don't let anyone walk through the breakage area on their way out.
2. Open a window and leave the room for 15 minutes or more.
3. Shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system, if you have one.

Sounds great for the environment. Maybe while we have our SUV's idling in the garage we can have a piñata party with the CFLBs. Kind of a Jim Jones greenie coup d'grâce for us non-believers.

Gabriel,
Yes environmentalists have killed more people than terrorists. Undersized CAFE regulated cars are death traps. My TAHOE/BMW760 may be a gas guzzler but if I get in an accident short of a train or a tractor trailer I'm going to get out of my vehicle with some carpet burn from the air bag. I'll probably be able to back up and drive off. Someone in a Pious... er I mean Prius won't be so lucky. & if we are really doing it all for the children shouldn't we cart them around in up armored Humvee's to ensure their safety?

Which brings us back to auto makers jumping on the greenie band wagon. I'm sure they would be pleased as punch if it was a law you had to buy a hybrid and after they upgrade the technology then you could be forced to buy a fuel cell powered car to then force you to buy solar powered car & then comes the fairy dust power.
But none of those corporations have any benefit in promoting a global warming agenda.

Oh one more thing (I got caught up in my rant there)

History is a great guide. From the mid to late 1800's there was great concern about the great metropolises of America going dark at night because we were running out of whale oil. Whale oil became more expensive people conserved and started to switch to kerosene lamps. Then some wise guy came up with an incandescent light bulb.

As the cost rise and becomes prohibitive we will find other solutions. But the cost still hasn't become unbearable.

Haha that's a good one. But it wasn't environmentalists who popularized the economy car, it was OPEC and before OPEC it was the oil companies who made OPEC what it was. Environmentalists had nothing to do with the 1973 gas crisis, it was merely a continuation of the chain of events that is still and will still lead up to the changing of our entire economy and infrastructure to steer clear of fossil fuels.

Like it or not, it's going to happen, and people who want to fight the change will be left behind while people who embrace the change will get rich.

AL Gore and his ilk are simply using climate change alarmism as advertisements for green technology, and old guard establishments like GM and Exxon are going to have to work to keep up. It's simple market pressure. Come on, 65 years ago smoking was considered healthy. Now it is known to be unhealthy. Things change. If emissions for internal combustion engines go from being allegedly harmless to still harmless that would be a surprise.

Just used my day off to do "Angie". First time I've ever done it, being a newcomer to CF, and I've gotta say, I AM BEAT. I'm the fitness trainer for my fire department and I have never been more excited about a workout or an approach to exercise! Very excited for future sessions and the pain that comes with them!!! 1-2-3 GO!!!

I have no problem steering clear of fossil fuels or whale oil or kerosene. Like most consumers I want the most that my money can buy. If you have more stuff for less $, I'll buy it. If you have less stuff for more $ and a really good story about how unicorns and Strawberry Shortcake have approved of this product I'm still probably not going to buy it.
That is why CFLB only have 5% of the market. They cost to much for their benefit. Right now none of the alternative are viable economically. If solar power were really cheaper then coal power companies would be knocking people down to get to it. It isn't.
I'm still trying to figure out how to put a solar panel on my roof to power a hydrogen separator to run my fuel cell.
When the price of crude goes up significantly or the price of the alternatives go down they will be adopted in mass. Until then it's a non-starter.

I do my runs in the morning and crossfit workouts at night - since im doing so much cardio anywya I just do a short warm up - bust through the WOD at full force and go home - i usually skip the cardio WODs and do something else and I try to take it easy on legs before a long run
I think it is recommended that you do another sport while crossfitting - triathelons sound perfect to me - once i move back to the mainalnd and get my bike back I will be doing the same...good luck to you : )

A very good point. Actually, there's a third major issue - transmission. While still depending on easily transported fuels, one can build power plants wherever they are most convenient. Once we start paying attention to green resources, we're typically restrained by location. In Texas for example, all the wind resources are in the west, but all the people are in the south and east. Massive problems have occurred because of a lack of transmission, and since transmission is a common good, it gets managed by the regulatory body, which is inevitably (more) inefficient.

Similarly, there may be the technology and the resources to use a relatively small portion of the Mojave desert to meet the energy needs of the entire nation, but getting it from point a to point b is much harder.

Also, the issue with vehicles is shifting. Given that the transmission needs to be built with a shift to green power regardless, battery storage capabilities in vehicles are not as big of a deal. Efficient electric vehicles are on the way. However, being able to make such batteries last is a totally different issue, since it puts strain on them to be constantly drained and charged.

Anyway, interesting stuff. Looking forward to getting back to seeing what tomorrow is.

We have similar issues with existing power sources anyway. Hydro plants are obviously on rivers, coal plants are often fed by a neighbouring open-cut mine.

It's like when people say that wind turbines are ugly - drilling and mining aren't pretty operations.

Most places have some opportunity to exploit renewable energy if you consider wind, solar, tide/wave, geothermal and hot rock options. Quite a few cold, dark places with geothermal. Lots of cold places with lots of wind. Lots of still places with tons of sunlight.

And we're getting better and better at buffering these things. Batteries are obviously improving, but there are solar chimney designs that buffer heat in stone tiles to keep the plant running over night. It's all very interesting stuff.

Comment #123 - Posted by: Pinstripes & Pedals at March 11, 2008 4:20 AM

Nice article :D

Now don't get me wrong. I like clean parks and clean rivers/lakes/streams, and if you can get me energy more efficiently at a lower cost, awesome.

But this global warming bit is out of control. They whine that the Heartland Institute and other anti-global warming advocates hasve made 10 MILLION dollars from trying to disavow global warming. No one ever talks about the BILLIONS made by Gore and his followers. But that's ok, right? We'll protect the politically correct and if someone tries to use the scientific process in an attempt to prove that theory wrong (wait...isn't that what science is all about?) then we'll chastise them, right?

And no one ever talks about how all these fossil-fuel companies are banking on looking green (although, as an ardent capitalist I support that). All the hippies and enviro-nuts are, in effect, getting hosed because the corporations they hate are making the buku bucks on helping the environment ;)

My 2 cents.

The cost of crude is only going to go up, but when everyone is broke from trying to eke out the last few miles from their gas cars, installing solar panels on their roofs will itself be cost prohibitive.

It is the people that make the transfer now to more efficient and environmentally friendly practices that will be buffered when changes do come. They are ahead of their time.

Only doing something if it's cheap...not exactly cutting edge I'd say. I shop at whole foods. People who shop at Costco probably think of me as a snob but you know how they appear to me more often than not? Like white trash.

Comment #126 - Posted by: gabriel at March 11, 2008 9:01 AM

Yes, gabriel, but not all of us have the money to purchase at whole foods, while costco sells more for less. Get angry about it if you want, but that's the fact. Now is it sad that real good, healthy food is more expensive? Yes. But that's life right now. A lot of people buy what's cheap to pinch pennies.

Comment #127 - Posted by: Christopher Meyer at March 11, 2008 9:20 AM

You know, I think the issue of global warming is emblemmatic of the Left's struggle for relevance. China has admitted through capitalism that Communism doesn't work; our poor get less poor every year; the whole economy is going green through profit-based free enterprise motives; we are winning the war in Iraq.

All they have is rhetoric (hope, change), entitlement increases through ill conceived efforts at universal healthcare, and Global Warming. Even there, McCain is saying he is basically on board. Who is there left to save?

I guess Obama's nearly 900 billion aid package to the developing world could count. Why not provide welfare to the world as well, preferably without any ties to national interest?

You can only see this global warming debate, in my view, through the lens of an anti-corporate agenda, which amounts to anti-Americanism, since we have the most and largest corporations.

The effort has not been made to make this debate scientific by framing the evidence in such a manner that predictions can be made. They aren't acting in a serious manner. They are not framing anything in the form of falsifiable hypotheses, and even the few feeble predictions they do make (like the predicted major hurricane season after Katrina that never materialized) they get wrong.

Nobody predicted global cooling. All they can do at this point is pretend it doesn't matter.

The better I understand not just the issues, but the psychology behind them, the more I realize just how successful leftist propaganda has been at achieving our collective, unilateral, intellectual disarmament.

This need not last, but we need a lot more places like here.

Borrowed WOD from Diablo Crossfit!

"The Deck of Cards"

Jokers= Run 1 Mile
Diamonds = Push ups
Spades = Pull ups
Hearts = Burpees
Clubs = Sit ups

Instructions: Shuffle your deck of cards, start the timer and pick up a card, do the exercise listed. Each numbered card is face value, aces are high, and face cards are 10. So if you draw the ace of spades first perform 11 pull ups, then draw again, if you pick the 9 of hearts do 9 burpees.

WOW! What a workout. Finished in 54:10 no breaks...all out. Say hi to Pukie:)

My wife - 33f/5'-6"/120
Finished in 1:06:12 no breaks...both of us smoked!
