For Mary for each round do we perform 10 single leg squats with right and left each round or do we do left leg on round right leg the other round?

Comment #13 - Posted by: doogie003 at March 4, 2008 7:47 PM

I have been crossfitting for awhile now I don't know why but I never read Eugene Allen's certification seminar notes located in the FAQ section under essential reading. It is a really great read:

See you tomorrow Mary.

#15 air squats.

I was hoping for Cindy because I thought it would be Murphy.

I think I'll get a taste of Mary. And to everyone who was crossing their fingers, hoping against hope for a Murph-less Wednesday, Murph is just a mile, a 20 round Cindy, and another mile. Those of you doing 30 rounds of Cindy should feel ecstatic.

by the by, it'd be a goddam miracle if nobody got RHABDOWNED!! this week.

Oh yeah, does this ring any bells with any other female crossfitters...

- Complete WOD
- Shower, get changed, lose all ability to hold a hairbrush in one hand and a hairdryer in the other and keep both arms above your head for more than 5 seconds.
- Take ages to dry your hair
- Give up trying to apply makeup
- Get strange sideward glances from girl in next mirror at the noises you're making
- Fumble in your bag as you've lost all control of your fingers
- Go to work, stare into space for a while
- Try to disguise inexplicable whimpers you make when getting out of your chair.
- Sit all day waiting for the next WOD to come around

damn it - it's fecking GREAT:-) and you know you're gonna do it all again the next time.

Comment #33 - Posted by: Helzy (Northern Ireland) at March 5, 2008 1:42 AM

Made a medicine ball today out of an old basketball and sand, ended up weighing 25.5 lbs - yikes! Maybe a kids ball or womens size ball woulda been better but I got through them. Good times

Really? that's all?

Yeah, I was taking it easy on the squats with 135...

:) Eeeep. Can you imagine doing Murph with 135-225?

Another beautiful day in the sandbox. Sun is shining (still), starting to heat up (again), and the CF workouts just keep the days exciting. Today's WOD choice was Cindy. Was excited to see if the one rep per minute would actually work, and it turned out to be pretty sweet. Next time around, will have to start picking up the pace after the 10-12 min mark to try to get 2 more. What's the PR --- two more than last time. YEAH!!

28(+5 pull-ups and 10 push-ups)PR by 2 rounds!

I started to notice that after a set of days that are really difficult like the past few, or like last time when it was a "linda" and "murph" back to back combo, the thrid day of the rotation, even though I'm crushed I still come out strong, and most the time with PR's? I think someone is CrossFit said "if you keep doing the same thing your gonna get the same result"(maybe Greg A?), is that like whats going on? different line-ups of WODs so different, and mostly better results? whatever it is I love it..

One of the many great things
about the Crossfit cert. is meeting amazing people. The singular bad thing about the Crossfit cert. is having to say goodbye to the best workout partner you've ever had!

If you are brand new to Crossfit or you've been around for a while, if you haven't already, get to a cert. It will be the best money and time you've ever spent.

First time back at crossfit in a long time...
So we return to find Cindy in the que.

15 rounds (had a little help on the last set of pull ups) in 20 min

Also introduced a friend to the workout of the day

He did well with 12 rounds (with a lot of help throughout on pull ups) in 20 min.

Good to be back.

Comment #79 - Posted by: Devin at March 5, 2008 6:09 AM

8 minute 16k kb snatch set: 82L/78R. Hand switch at 4 minutes.

10 minute rest.

I achieve 30+ rounds regularly. Time to up the ante and add weight to Cindy. Good choice - this was much more challenging and really exposed my pushup weakness:

"Heavyweight/Increased ROM Cindy" - done wearing a tight 20# X-vest: 20 rounds + 5 pullups, 10 pushups and 6 squats. Constriction from the vest made breathing difficult.

Kipping pullups done with increased ROM over the bar with clavicle or chest touching bar rather than just chin barely over bar. Full elbow extension. No broken sets.

Pushups were my nemesis as usual. I was breaking them after round two. (At least I didn't have to break any rounds more than three times). Hands on 2" blocks to make up for the reduced ROM of wearing the vest. Vest to deck and full elbow extension each rep.

Squats to 20# D-ball with full hip extension. The D-ball is smaller diameter than the Dynamax for a little more ROM. No broken sets.

#60 RB and #73 Angie: For the 50's I usually do them as listed on the page. 10 sets 50 in the listed order. For me, I have to walk all over the gym to get to the various pieces of equipment so splitting up the sets takes more time. I think that doing two rounds of 25 might be quicker though. I think that the only official rule is that you do the required number of each exercise; order and sets is up to you.

I've been crossfitting since Jan 1 and each time I repeat a workout I crush the previous PR. This stuff is amazing, I am running farther, faster, and lifting more weight than ever before. What's better is that I'm actually gaining weight! I've been stuck at 170 for 3 years doing a standard weight lifting routing. In the past 2 months I've gained almost 5lbs. Crossfit rocks!

My pullup bar is part of my power-rack, so that when hanging and legs bent at 90 degrees, my knees are around 8" from the floor. Just can't seem to kip in that bent-leg position. Going to install a new pullup bar soon, because all these dead-hang pullups are killijng my times!

Lance #121: Yes the burpees include the push up part. Drop down, kick out legs, do a push up, stand up, jump with your hands over your head (not out in front of you or anywhere else).

Others: The "Filthy Fifty" is completed by doing all 50 reps before moving on to the next exercise. The order is not critical, it is still a killer workout if no matter what order you do the movements. BUT you should note it next to your result, and if you really want to compare to everyone else it should be completed in the listed order.

Mary: 7 rounds. Top of head to floor HSPUs against a wall. Used a hand for balance on the pistols.

. . . HSPUs are when I hate being 6'4" 210lbs.

20 rounds with 10 seconds to spair

Also did yesterdays WOD yesterday and subbed pull ups with push ups and didn't do the kettle belle exercise and back extensions. I have a very limited home gym, in a time of 14min 45sec. As a replacement of sorts (about 2 hours later) I did 100 push ups, situps and air squats for a time of 6min 50sec and later last night did 100 very strict push ups in sets of 20 with 10 to 20 sec rest in between sets.

Me: 41yo/M/5'10"/191lbs

Warm Up: Greg's circulars + 1 set of crossfit warm up and 10 slow reps of 45lb shoulder press.

WOD: Mary

7 Rounds + 5 HSPU + 10 Pistol Squats + 2 Pull ups (PR)

HSPU: No Broken Sets all good ones

One Legged Squats: I did them on a box to allow the leg in the air to go below the level that would be the ground. I succeeded in keeping my non weight bearing leg in front and above the level of the box on most reps.

Pull ups: All Kipping. Palms out normal width grip. I got my chin over the bar every time but I need to lock out at the bottom better.

A good site for one legged squat progressions

http://www.beastskills.com/pistol.htm

All in all, I am pretty happy with a PR after this 3 day cycle. It is on cycles like the one that we just completed that I gain the most ground on strength and stamina.

Can't do enough kipping pull ups yet to do a full workout. I can do about 10-20 full pushups and then I'm spent and have to go to knees.

I'm wondering if all you other girls out there have a hard time with full push ups? I just can't do very many. I do the crossfit warmup before workouts and work on them but I just can't pump them out like Nicole and Annie. I really need to get on The Zone diet.

Gnat, about push ups,

Kelly Moore posted today (comment #80) about her difficulty with push ups and what she is doing to overcome that, although she is super human and what she considers a weakness is not quite typical (she is working on stopping bullets with her wrist bracelets when she is not working on her push ups).

In the Army physical fitness standards, there is a large difference between the men's push up standard and the women's push up standard. The mens maximum in two minutes is 77 reps and the ladies maximum in two minutes is 42. Here is a link to the standards:

http://usmilitary.about.com/od/army/a/afpt.htm

I think this speaks volumes because the Army uses these standards for recruitment and they want candidates that are as equal as possible.

Gnat, about push ups:

One more item: I just spoke to a friend of mine who is a push up machine and she said one word: tabata

She said that she was not any good at push ups until she got really serious and started doing tabata workouts with push ups, now she can knock out sets of fifty.

A round is a completed group of exercises. For example, for Cindy if you did a total of 55 pull ups, 110 push ups and 152 squats the score would be:

10 rounds + 5 pull ups, 10 push ups and 2 squats.

And about Mark M. and Mark R. just a few people from yesterday's posts who only want to see times and loads posted to the comments board, no useless banter, like this post, should be allowed. So I am taking my lunch break and commenting more than usual just for fun because I trained hard already today :>)

Every successive day without kippable pull-up bars is hell.

This weekend, gonna make new pull-up bars. This time we'll put them in the ground instead of on the marble tile floor of living room.

It doesn't make sense to go the next 4 months "progressing" on dead-hang, quarter-kip pull-ups. That would be 4 months of progress lost.

Comment #219 - Posted by: gorillasoph & girl at March 5, 2008 12:42 PM

Not my best effort but the best one as RX'ed.

I got 17 rounds plus 5 pull-ups and 10 push-ups in 20:13.

I have accomplished 20 in the past but didn't do all the pull-ups kipping. Some were jumping.

Today all pull-ups unbroken, full extension and chin over bar. I alternated between palms away and palms facing. All push-ups were chest to floor and full extension and squats to a 15# medicine ball. At 6'2" hips were definitely below knees.

Less rounds than last time - but the pull-up bars outside are higher than in the weight room and the height forced me to do kipping pull-ups (which I'm still quite crappy at) but it was nice & sunny & warm and now I have a benchmark for doing this workout- without jumping pull-ups. Yay!

Ok today I am wiped after the previous two days! 8 rounds + 10 one-legged squats. Not my best. My right levator scapula is so tight it almost felt like a vertabre was out. Maybe go and do Cindy this evening...yippeee!

Also did 3 1minute rounds of lateral box jumps and 2 1minute rounds of jump rope finished off with 3 x 200yd sprints.

Also started the zone diet 2 days ago...feel great, not tired and have acute focus all the time. Should have done it 15yrs ago.

14 rounds.

Had a nasal surgery last Thursday to help my breathing. I did seven in 7:00, then had to slow down because I felt a little shaky. Not a bad start back to XF though.

6x Cindy in 15 mins (gym closed), can't do pullups worth a rat's ass, although admittedly I was pacing myself.

First cross-fit workout in a while, hoping to continue the trend.

19 of Cindy + 5 PU. The first XF I've ever actually followed without subbing something. Kicked my ass.

Could have done better but had a brutal day at work unloading a truck.

38y.o. Female

First time doing "Mary" and I love this workout.
I had to sub jumping pull-ups.

Completed 7 sets in 19-1/2 minutes.

I'm marathon training right now and the one-legged squats made my glute soreness practically disappear. I need to do this workout more often.

Who says you are not fire every bit of muscle when you are doing kipping pull-ups. My calves were cramping at the 11-15 reps. Ouch. Puking my guts out all day yesterday probably left me a bit dehydrated.

Mary

9 rds + 12 pull-ups

Only my second time doing mary. Good times!

Well today is the first bad workout in awhile. Cindy as rx'd, only 12 rounds. Same as I did on 1/27/08. Really thought I'd see some improvement. Had a stomach bug the last 3 days and lost 5 lbs. But as was said earlier, "the effective range of an excuse is 0 meters!" Charlie Mike!

Cindi has become my new favorite girl. 19 rounds new PR from 17 the last time I tried her out.

I have a funny story. I'm sure we all know people who give CrossFit the short shrift. My brother-in-law is a Globo Gym lifer and has told me on several occasions I was wasting my time with CF. Well, the last time we got together to workout we did Cindi. He saw the 5 pull ups, 10 Push ups, 15 squats in 20 minutes, etc., and he asked me if we were "warming up" with this.

Now my brother is a big guy and he's been lifting seriously for 6 years, so I told him that at the end of the 20 minutes if he doesn't feel as if he got a good workout, I would never ask him to do another CF WOD and I would never talk to him about CF again. So we start the clock and I start blazing through 5 rounds straight, I take a second to look over at him while he was working out and I never saw him get his chin above the bar once. Not one time. When he dropped to the floor, he didn't get his chest down once, and when he squatted he didn't get his quads lower than 90 degrees once! He cheated the whole damn time!

About half way through he started complaining about how much time was left and said that he was going to do more squats and more pull ups and stop doing push ups (because he had a big chest workout the day before). We finished up and I had completed my 17 rounds, a new PR for me. I asked him how many rounds he did and he responded by asking me how many I did. I told him and he said that he did at least 21 or 22 rounds!

So I asked him what he thought of the workout and he said that it was too easy, but he couldn't catch his breath for 30 mins and the next day he couldn't even sit down!

Cindy....awesome

14 or 15 Rounds I lost count.

This is the first WOD I did when I started the program. I started on an off day on Jan 31st. I think I did 10 rounds of her. I feel pretty good increasing by 4 or 5. Thanks all

21+5+10, new PR by 10 pushups. Just went steady, only one rest of about 10 sec. to gulp some water. Tried kipping pushups, and they felt good, definitely feel it in the core, was able to go 17 rounds completely unbroken as opposed to the usual of having to break the pushups after round 8. Cool.
