I'm gonna do it anyway, and probably be proud when I'm done, but not until then!

Thanks.

Comment #14 - Posted by: Jason Ackerman - Albany CrossFit at March 2, 2008 7:13 PM

Last time I tried this I had to give up after an hour. In that hour I managed to complete THREE rounds. 10-9 and 8.

Since then I've put on 5kg. Which translates to a 7,5kg heavier deadlift which then translates to my being lucky if I manage to complete three rounds this time.

By the way, the date in the link is wrong. It's the right link... but it was 071114 not 071104

Comment #15 - Posted by: Júlíus at March 2, 2008 7:14 PM

we use squat cleans, right?

Comment #16 - Posted by: soccerman at March 2, 2008 7:16 PM

I 100% knew it! I should have done some fasting last week :/

I've never done the three bars of death with the right DL and clean weight and never with the bench press at all.

I'm nervous. Torn hands and 55 185# deadlifts sounds painful. Something tells me my hands are the last thing I should be worrying about. eeek

Comment #17 - Posted by: AllisonNYC__23/5'2/125 at March 2, 2008 7:19 PM

Júlíus - If that's the case, I'd recommend scaling a bit. You will definitely get more of the intended adaptation from "Linda" than if you struggle through 3 slow rounds with the rx'd weight.

Comment #18 - Posted by: Jeff at March 2, 2008 7:20 PM

i like the part that says storm through for time...

Comment #19 - Posted by: fish at March 2, 2008 7:20 PM

Hey folks,
In the new journal there is a good lecture from Nicole on zone/paleo diet. Could someone tell me/put me in the right direction of how to figure this out for my body and fitness level. I just ordered the Paleo for Athletes book and nowthis combo idea caught me off guard. On yesterdays posts some folks gave me a good intro to this in regards to definitions of paleo vs. zone but now how do I apply it?
Thanks!! Sorry if this sounds basic but I am really poor at the diet conept, I have been following the "eat everything in front of my face diet" lately.

Interesting that Linda is my mom's name as well as my mother-in-law's name.
Should that make it harder or easier? lol
It's still the hardest one for me.

I like the gymnastics instruction and have taken a liking to playing around with stuff in the gymnastics videos on rest days. I can tell it's helped a lot in other workouts, as well.

Don't miss Robb Wolf's stuff on intermittent fasting. I struggled with the paleo/zone combo because I was constantly hungry but for some reason when I combine the rigth foods with IF it works great for me. Good luck.

Holy god. Im wrecked already after today.
I had to skip Saturday and Friday, so I decided to do the 3-3-3-3-3 back squat and Angie wod's together. Bad idea. I got through the back squats then through angie's pull ups, push ups and situps
but 30 reps into the squats I hightailed it to the chuck bucket.
No more doubling up on WODS for me.

Comment #48 - Posted by: Micah T at March 2, 2008 8:50 PM

Would like to thank the Martins, their kids, and the staff at Brand X for putting on a FIRST CLASS CrossFit Kids Cert. If you want to pass your level 2 CF Cert, I recommend hitting the CFK cert first. You will learn some great cues for teaching the 9 main movements. They have little kids executing some "Rock Solid" technique. If you want to know what "Rock Solid" is, check out Jeff coaching or his students doing a WOD!

P.S. Hey Coach. Ramona doesn't smell - that bad :-)

Comment #51 - Posted by: sergio at March 2, 2008 9:28 PM

Theres no way im gonna be able to do this tomorrow... its monday which means that its chest/tricep day for 99% of the people at the globo gym i work out at and god forbid someone take the bars to do a real workout. Theres already gonna be like a thirty minute wait for people to use the benches and i laugh watching people just sitting on machines waiting to use a bench. I'll just make up angie which i missed over the weekend.

I feel your pain.

I'm going to go do this at around midnight - 1am when all the 24hr fit meat-heads are resting their chesticles.

Comment #54 - Posted by: Shane at March 2, 2008 9:38 PM

I cant do that, my gym closes at midnight and even at that time its still busy. I go to the globo here at school and a lot of people are still working out at that time. Oh and if they see me doing cleans, i could get kicked out like last time!

Maybe in a few years after i graduate ill have a nice gym in my garage complete with bumper plates and rings!

Comment #55 - Posted by: arivgt at March 2, 2008 9:45 PM

This looks like a blast...
but its the kinda thing that doesn't work too well with the status quo of the university gym where I do these things.

I can barely alternate between the pull-up bar and a dumbbell without someone moving in or cleaning up. 3 bars? I'll definitely be getting the stink-eye on this one!

I really don't know how I am going to work this in the gym. The only place to really do clean and dl are on the opposite sides of the gym from the bench. I might just do the whole cycle of the first 2 than start back at 10 on bench. Plus the weight?! ugh! my grip is GARBAGE. Last time I did dl I put a layer of paper towel over my hand so the sweat would not get on the bar. Actually worked pretty well though

#67, I was wondering the same thing and went over to the Brandx site for scaling. There is an excellent description of scaling Linda by weight and increasing reps that has you doing as much work as the rx'd workout, but at a scale that is achievable.
http://forum.brandxmartialarts.com/viewtopic.php?t=3590&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=30
The post is by JDG and really breaks it down, I had to do a little math, but I think I found a way to do the workout and not feel like I am not doing the same amount of work as someone who does it as "rx'd". Hope this helps.

Modified Linda

I decided to let Linda choose my reps for me, as this is the first time I have done her.

I started at 1.5 times body wt. 300 #s. After rep 2 I didn't like the popping noise my back was doing(back injury from the Coast Guard). Reduced DL to 225 # and left the rest as RX'd. I did 4 more DLs at the reduced wt and could do no more. So I started at 6...I know. Pathetic. But I'm a noob to this stuff, and doing it only makes me stronger. To not do, means I will never satisfy Linda...

6-5-4-3-2-1

DL at 225 lb
Bench press at 200 lb
Clean at 150 lb

27 min in a globo-gym

I followed up with a reduced wt 155lb DL set of 5 for 10 reps each. Obviously I need the practice.

Squat-clean: 145 (had to partition all sets)

Yeah, quite an awful time, I probably should have adjusted the bench and clean weights downward a bit. The squat clean is what added so much freakin time. I kept getting light-headed throughout each set as I was having trouble figuring out "how to breath" during those reps.

That workout was a killer.

Since I'm at a box gym it had to be two bars of death with me loading and unloading one bar for the Deadlifts and Cleans. The hardest part was actually the grip, after the first three sets I couldn't hold the bar anymore. First time and I'm glad it's over. Can't wait for this one to come up again.

Hey Crossfitters!

The garage style gym I joined a month ago just closed. I loved it, I could do all of my wods and it was the rough and tough style gym that I had been looking for. I have other facilities I can workout in but they are all health clubs. I'm looking for some crossfitters in the ST. Louis, MO area that possibly workout in a garage style gym. I'm on the IL side of the Metro area, but I'm willing to travel a bit. LET ME KNOW!

Any crossftters in the Toledo Ohio area that are looking for a place to do the WODs? I have a 30x60 heated outbuilding that is set up crossfit style. The closest affiliate is 45 minutes away in Ann Arbor so if you need a gnarly space to get brutal in email me. The floors are already conditioned with the visitation of a hundred sweat angels. Come and go as you please, turn down the heat and shut off the lights when you leave.

Comment #123 - Posted by: joetoledo m/53/180 at March 3, 2008 7:49 AM

Linda is a special workout for me. As I said a year ago in Comment #76 here: http://www.crossfit.com/mt-archive2/001722.html, Linda was my last workout before being diagnosed with cancer and my first workout back after finishing my chemo. Now it's been a year, and I'm almost back on track (it's taking a lot longer to get back than I though it would). Still had to scale the weights a little this time, but I did it all in 50 minutes. So I'm happy.

Now that it's been a year since I finished dealing with all that chemo stuff, I feel better talking about it. Crossfit (or really, just being in great shape in general) really helped with the treatments. Because I was so strong going in, the doctors were able to give me the really nasty stuff that ended up saving me. Of course it took me all the way back to nothing, but there were people in the hospital with me that weren't able to do their treatments on schedule because they were beat down too far. So keep up the hard work, it does more for you than you realize.

Last night needed a Sunday workout.

3 rounds of:

500m row
12 140lb deadlifts
21 20" box jumps

15:02

To my pleasant surprise the box jumps were the easy rest part. The first couple were tough then they just flowed. I'm thinking that's a pretty good sign I need to get my 24" box in use.

THEN

A mop job of my 1800 sq. foot facility...rubber floors and a cloth mop. Try it sometime. I went high intensity until my back and butt began siezing on me and I began to get light headed.

Bench went in full sets the whole way through (scaled too much there).

DL's were tough and Cleans here really hard at the end mostly due to a failing grip.

Echoing the sentiments from last weekends cert at GSX. Thanks to all the lecturers/coaches (Dutch for kicking me through Fran). I tried to thank all you personally, if I did not- I apologize, you really did an outstanding job. The cert attendees were all very friendly and eager to share their personal thoughts about coaching, nutrition, physiology and what works at their box work.

Quick thought about GSX. Jeff Tucker has an amazing facility, and is an extremely hospitable host. No disrespect to the other cert locations but GSX is centrally located in the US and is easily accessible to most in the midwest area. If you are considering a cert, and live in the midwest area/central US- book it at GSX, you will not be disappointed.

Thanks
Tony

Linda would have been cool, but I'm not ready yet. Lots of DOMS from my half Angie before the rest. I just worked on BPs and DLs, for today (skipped the cleans).

BPs: 5x 67.5kg, 5x 67.5kg, 4x 65kg (missed 5th)
DL: 5x130kg

DLs felt pretty good, but I've lost a lot of upper body strength. BPs were miserable. It'll come back, though. DOMS felt a lot better once I got to work.

After being upset about yesterdays "Angie" for 26:32 I feel like less of a CF and more of a biggest loser loser :)
I'm going to have to do this one tonight, from like 8 or 9 at night so that I can use all the bars in sight.
Your times look awesome!
Keep up the fantastic work! "And somebody get me a Venti BREVE STAT~

Third time with Linda, first "as rx'd"

DL 205
BP 135
CL 100 (full squat cleans)

Time: 32:00 on the nose. This is the first time I've had the opportunity to do this with 3 bars instead of 2, so some time saved there but then you're just more exhausted anyway. Definately had some people in the gym giving me weird looks.

Last time: 35:50 with 170, 135, 70 lb weights.

First time: 31:35 with 125, 115, 65 lb weights.

Thanks Crossfit, that's some serious progression in only 5 months, and I was NOT a rookie lifter when I started. Linda was one of my first WOD's, and boy was she a wakeup call. I remember thinking when I finished "there is no way I'll ever do this as written". I'm very happy to have just proven myself wrong!

Killer-Adjusted heavily, need to re-access and scale down work outs.
Deadlift: (1.5 bw =305-not able) started at 240-240-225-225-225-200-200-200-200-200.
Bench: 205-200-200-195-190-190-190-190-190-190.
Clean: (3/4 bw=150-not able) Started with 105-all 10 sets.

Have only 2 bars-which became tiring to change. As reps went down grip-weakened on deadlift.

This time:
Reps as rx'd. Weights scaled as follows:
DL 250#
BP 170#
CL 125#

Made it through 10-9 then had to drop to 225#DL (grip failing), 155#BP (just wasn't going up), 115#CL (grip again). Made it through 8-7-6 then had to drop BP to 135# for remaining reps. Finishing the reps as rx'd was a physical as well as mental triumph for me. My arms are shaking as I type this and showering/shaving is starting to worry me...

Ankle update:

My left ankle looks like a balloon with some purple hues to it so I'll be sitting out Linda today, and probably anything that requires standing for some time. No news regarding my X-rays yet but I hope it's just a sprain.

I'll be rocking out the upper body stuff for a while, it would seem, so look for my JT times and HSPU to improve dramatically whilst my newfound deadlifting and squatting strength takes the hit.

Never a dull moment at the Aucoin household...

Used 225 for the deads, 135 for the cleans and 185 for the bench. Ran out of time at 29:20, had to go to work, finished through round 6.

The deads and cleans were a bit light for me (I could do complete sets from the get go). I was sharing the bars with two other guys. I had to break up the benches every round.

Really focused on full Squat Cleans this time. Grip became a factor in the later rounds.

Post - Hand stand holds really getting better with these thanks to Jeff Tucker and the folks at GSX.

May be a dumb question:

Would you say its better to rest enough when needed to be able to finish a set, or go as fast as possible and rest during the set if needed? I have seen both done, and personally I prefer the second of the two. But isn't that what crossfit is about?

One more ass whomped here. 8:54 as rx'ed from yesterday's video. I've got a workout tomorrow with Zach Even-Esh and Linda would have exhausted me, and I have no idea what Zach has in store for me. I thought how bad can 75# thrusters be? And then burpees? You get the picture. BW:174 Y/A:59

My 1st time doing Linda. DL225, CL165, B205 I started with 315 on the DL and dropped it to two plates after the first set. My heart was pounding for the whole time, and I finished with what I thought was a decent time of 55:30. It looks like there is only one way to go, and that is up.

Back from a long weekend at the Arnold Classic. It was great to finally meet Veronica Carpenter; unfortunately I missed watching her compete in O-lifting. The O-lifting was definitely amazing to watch. A good number of the competing women were putting more weight overhead than most women can deadlift.

No Linda for me; lower back very fatigued from the six hour drive and doing kb demos for the past three days. I did the featured video WOD instead preceeded with a 10 minute 16k kb snatch set.

7:43 for 5 rounds of 7 reduced kip pullups done on Catherine's doorway gym (reduced so I didn't kip the bar off the doorframe), 7 pushup burpees with a lateral jump over a 12"x12" piece of luggage and thrusters with a pair of 36# kbs. The luggage jump forced me to maintain an honest jump each rep.

Finished with 5 minutes of jumping rope using Catherine's speed rope. Much, much better than the beaded one I have been using.

The second greatest workout in the histroy of Hero CrossFit (out of two)!

We took our time through the sets to demonstrate proper form, as well as having to change weights out every single set. Otherwise each set was unbroken.

OPT : WHAT ON EARTH!? That's outrageous.

What kind of workout is this?! I can't believe how wrecked I am right now. As soon as I got to the gym I picked up a 95# bar and figured out then and there that my hands were going to make this next to impossible or really painful. I decided to give it a shot anyway.

Keith cut us off at 20 minutes because we were going in heats and only had on BP.

I started out with 185 for the DL. I thought it would be easy enough since my max is 240. yeah right. I got 2 reps and said no, no, no. All DLs were done pretty much by my finger tips because holding it just freakin hurt.
My first time Bench pressing except at the Barbell cert. Never done a max so went light...too light

In 20 minutes made it through the 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, and 5s with:
bench press: 75# all unbroken
clean: 95#
Deadlift: 145#

I feel like I"ve been hit by a truck. It was harder than I expected and I'm not looking forward to doing it heavier and all rounds. WFT. That was insane.

Did pressing before and worked up to 90. Failed at 95.

Seriously overtrained last week (between CrossFit and Jiu Jitsu) and physically crashed Friday. First work out since so I was just feeling it out.

Did the first 4 rounds (10-9-8-7) as Rx'd, but with ring push-up/fly combo in place for bench, in just under 20min. I usually scale down quite a bit and this felt a lot harder. I might try it again in a couple of days to get a base line.

Wow... this was a lot harder than i thought it would be and i'm super-glad i let them talk me out of Rx.

I did 205# DL, 175# BP, and 115# clean. DL was HARD for the first 5 or 6 rounds, then not so bad. BP was pretty solid throughout, and I probably could have lifted more on the clean, but it was good to get a slight breather. Did all BP unbroken.

finished with a time of 29:55. Had I gone as prescribed, I probably would have taken over an hour to finish, and I work out during lunch, so that wouldn't be good. Still a good workout though, even though I scaled it down. The globogymmers were giving me curious looks, all inbetween their cable crossovers and lat pull-downs, of course.

I only had two bars. I could have totally gone heavier with my bench but was using the same bar for my cleans. I think I could have pulled off 105 for the cleans. Under estimated my capability. Hello crossfitters! Only my second workout with you guys. I loved that I hated this workout. I can barely move.

Something I wanted to comment on. I may be new to crossfit, but I am not new to staying healthy. I was reading through the comments and I saw a lot of people commenting, "Just getting over my sickness," or, "...a little under the weather." Come on guys. Part of the reason of doing crossfit is staying healthy. We need to practice our nutrition as much as we do our cleans. If you are having problems getting sick this winter, take some vitmin C, a multi vitamin, echinacea. The more the merrier. And eat your vegetables! (broccoli, spinach, dark greens) They are packed with nutrients and vitamins that will not only help you recover from these nasty workouts, but they will help keep you "above the weather."

40:06, but only made it through the 10, 9, and 2/3 (DL and BP) of 8 rep sets, then crashed. Started with too much weight on DL (255) and SC (135), had no second bar so used 75 lb dumbells for BP.

Next time start with 205 on DL and 115 on SC, and 185 BP if you have a second bar.

Really frustrated, disappointing effort today...
