We can break them up into sets, but we can't partition them.

That is, we can't do ten rounds of 10 pull-ups, 10 push-ups, 10 sit-ups and 10 squats but we can break the pull-ups up into as many sets as we have to to finish them before moving on to the push-ups.

Friday- was feeling in the mood for a favorite I did last year.

5 rounds for time:
21 Burpees
18 walking lunges with 2 (20#) DB overhead
Time: 17:34

Completed a 6th round just for fun. Love this workout. It was just what I needed today. Makes me a little sore-and hyper after :)

Saturday is a typical rest day for me, so get a couple extra pull ups for me!

I've been coming to this website for about two weeks now, and have been doing the WODs for about as long, I just wanted to say that you are ALL an inspiration to me. Keep up the great work!

I do have a quick question though. When doing the pull-ups for this WOD, I am doing them at home on a makeshift pull-up bar. For me right now, doing 100 pull-ups is tough, and I haven't got the room to work the kipping pull-up. Is it OK to scale down the number of pull-ups I do, in order to get through this WOD?

I thought that the Filthy 50's would be today's WOD... Guess that wasn't enough before a rest day. But I am up for the challenge. :)

"Angie" was one of the first workouts I was exposed to for CrossFit and I used to build my strength and endurance up to complete the WOD's by starting out at 25 of each and building up from there. Now, I am ready to time myself with the full thing. Wish me luck.

I also have to make up the workout from Leap Day... I am SOOO glad tomorrow is a rest day.

SML, I bet you are going to regret that little addition for your WOD on the 29th. 50-ish more days... then you are home to me. Yippee!!!

Like #16 and #21 said, do jumping pull-ups and accentuate the negative (the down side) of the pull-up. This will get you on the fast track to being able to do 100 kipping pull-ups with no problem. Good luck & most importantly, don't give up. It'll all come in due time.

During my warmup for this I usually just stare at the pull-up bar for a while and then the ground and then my medicine ball. Kind of in a stupor thinking about what I am going to do to my body.

The "official" CrossFit Warm-up is in the April 2003 CrossFit Journal.

3 rounds of 10-15 reps of
Samson Stretch (do the Samson Stretch once each round for 15-30 seconds)
Overhead Squat with broomstick
Sit-up
Back-extension
Pull-up
Dip
Note that for a workout that's dip or pullup-centric, you might want to do something else in the warmup.

They are what ever kind of sit-ups you want them to be.

Just make a note of what kind of sit-ups you did so you have a better comparison for the next time Angie pops up.

Oddly enough, I will be able to manage 100 pull ups while struggling to get 100 push-ups! In the same vein, I can strict press more than I can bench! Anybody else with me on this?

Yo Gaucoin my brother from the far north! I forgot to mention how happy I am that you are back.

I find unanchored Abmat sit-ups (with the feet sole to sole) where you sit all the way up and push your abs forward and sit nice and tall to be a lot harder than GHD sit-ups (parallel to the floor). Of course, GHD sit-ups when you reach all the way back and touch the floor trump everything. Those just suck.

OMG! I just got back from being out sick for a year..........how am I going to do 100 pullups........they definitely will be jumping pullups no doubt.

My lower back still hurts from the sumos's.........did I do something wrong? I am sure it will straighten out after 100 freakin pushups HOORAH!

I'm newish to CF, but have been doing WODs for about 6wks. I've been training for a lot longer in other systems, and seem to be competitive with the message board postings.

Just wondering if anyone can tell me if guys like Speal have a training history prior to CF or not? What are these guys doing to jump up to the next level (don't say the ZONE, i'm already a fan)?

Check out you local 'rigging and supply' vendors for rope that's thicker than 3/4". Depending on what they normally stock, you might be required to purchase a spool of what you're looking for. You can also search the message board under equipment for vendors on the 'net.

#36- mcmasters.com has really good rope prices. 1" to 1.5" would be a good size to get. most lengths in gyms for climbing are anywhere from 15' to 20'.
I'm pumped for angie. been wanting a good workout. itll take me all day though.

Somebody please elaborate on the "rules" here. I am under the impression that this is for time - so you can mix these events up however you see fit...not necessarily finish every rep of one thing before moving onto the next. Also that pull-ups can be any grip, any style - just get your chin over the bar 100 times...

Please school me on the appropriate method for self-destruction here.

We will be adding again, already did the lunch session - will post complete W/O upon completion of the evening session.

We have been going at this CF / Gym Jones-ish pace for about two weeks now and the results have been great - feeling a little destroyed however...

PS - TTC (yesterday's comment), we dont watch the videos on either site, server here wouldnt allow it even if we tried. And for the record, we have never violated the Laodicean border...unless posting to this site does just that...you tell us.

With Angie, the goal is to accomplish each exercise before moving to the next in the shortess time possible. This WOD is for total time.

If you are really good at situps then you can essencially make up time that you might have lost on the push ups if that is your weak area.

The beauty of Angie is that it really tests your endurance and strength and how much you are willing to stick with the WOD once fatigue sets in.

Hello from Camp ADDER,IRAQ

Did this in 20:28, i ran 5 miles before doing this workout.....kinda sucked on the squats today....did 80 last night at 135lbs. I did most of the push-ups as diamonds. All dead hangs pull-ups,once i got to 91 i could only get 2 at a time. At the end i did 100 flutter kicks just to shake out my legs...wound up killing my hip-flexors.

Rx'd or R'd is shorthand for "Received" - so when someone posts a time "as rx'd" they mean they did the WOD as it was written. They made no mods or subs. Some people can actually do that ;-)

Rx is a medical shorthand term that means prescription.
Coach "prescribes" us workouts. Like any other drug, Crossfit being one that if you truely get into it, will make you higher than ever, you are to take them "as prescribed", or "as rx'd". However, sometimes modifications need to made to the WOD, as Annlee stated, and scaled for a varied number of reasons. When we do the WOD as RX'd, we post "as rx'd". If we do jumoing pullups, modified pushups 76-100, crunches, but squats as rx'd....well I think you get the gist ofo what it means now!

Pullups took ~9:30 alone and another ~4-5 for the pushups. Squats went 60/20/10/10 pretty fast.

I'm not happy about the pullup time, but this is a PR for me as it is the first time I've done it without partitions.

I hear you cats on the sit up options, but if someone is asking what type sit ups to use, they are probably new to the game and should stick with regular. I'm all about trying harder ones if I've done a WOD enough times (like when we did Michael about 6 times back in the fall) but if I'm doing this as rx'ed, as in for speed, I'm doing the fasted method possible. If I'm at the CF games and sit ups come out of the hopper, I sure as sugar ain't asking where the GHD bench is.

Thanks for the welcome back, Freddy, it's been fun yet hard. And I'm not that really far north, it's just one short plane ride, really. You should come visit in the summer!!

Oh and Gym Jones attitude, 'most' people aren't looking for elite status here, many are looking to finish first. Have fun with the GHDs and then crying every time you sneeze tomorrow.

BUT...I broke them up differently than I was supposed to. I started with pullups and did until failure(first set was 36), than immediately went into pushps to failure(56), then right into sit-ups(completed in one set), then to failure on squats(63). I then went back to failure on pullups and so on until until I was left with about a dozen or so pullups that I finished up with.I than followed it up with 20 minutes of running.
I might not have been as RXd but it was much faster than previuos Annies(by a few minutes).
I'm happy with results and that I hit a single set PB on the pullups.

First of all, if you look up in the dictionary the definition of partition, you will see the first sentence you wrote is inaccurate. Partition in fact does mean to break up the sets.
Secondly, had I just started crossfitting or just started posting on this site, it would make more sensxe to me as to why you would even say something, something obviously cloaked in ignorance with a hint of self righteous indignation,to me anyway. I was helping the brother.
Thirdly, if you are going to correct someone, although I would suggest staying away from looking like a know it all (there are enough on here as it is), especially when what you have to say is inaccurate.

Well this was ugly. I don't think Angie likes me. I can do 10 quality dead hang pullups, so not wanting to slow the workout down and not having the kipping thing down yet, I tried using assisted pullups, hoping the high reps would still yield a good conditioning overload response. Even assisted it nailed me.

I am certainly no adonis, but I could score a 270 on the APFT when I started crossfitting at the end of November. Of course, I have gained about 25 pounds intentionally the last seven months too, 171 to 196. Maybe not such a good idea. Anyway maybe this will encourage the mere mortals on here. I started cramping at about 50 reps of everything in the places you would imagine for that exercise. this is my first 100 rep Angie, did 50s in the past.

Pull ups - assisted
Push ups - chest to floor
Sit ups - feet anchored, hands behind head, elbows to kness
Squats - deep, full extension at the top

time 30:12

then 1.5 mile run in 14:30

The rest of you amaze me!! I will keep working to catch up with you!

This is the first time I've done Angie in order... (completing each exercise before moving to the next, instead of partitioning it.) Also new it would not be beneficial for me to max out on pull ups in the beginning, but I wanted to take the opportunity see if i've made any improvements since last pull up max... Isn't it awesome how you always set a PR the first time you do a WOD! My illusions about completing this in under 20 minutes ended when the pull-ups took almost took 20 minutes on their own. Did sit-ups on decline bench.

Oh, it was actually the pull-ups & push-ups that almost took 20, but it's all good. I'm really impressed with every one who finished sub 20 and the sub 15 times are out of this world.

No record of last time, but I remember doing a lot of jumping pullups.

This time: As Rx'ed, 28:17. I'm stoked that I did 100 pullups AND that I did this in less than 30min. I incorporated tabata intervals and it helped me pace myself.

Assisted pullups...40 with 25 lb assist, 35 with 35 lb assist, and 25 with 45 lb assist.

100 push ups (broken sets of 20, and 15)

100 crunches (broken sets of 20 and 10)

100 squats (broken sets of 50)
approx 28 minutes.

My wife tried this...her 1st time.

50 assisted pullups with 50lb assist.
50 push ups from knees
50 crunches (broken sets)
50 squats
just under 12 minutes

The girl has had a hard-on for Angie since we first eyeballed the Girls more than 6 weeks ago. She was dancing with joyous anticipation when I came home today.

if you go to the named workouts in the FAQ, you will see that in only one case - Murph - do the instructions explicitly include "partitioning" as being allowed - if it meant the same thing as "broken sets", that wouldn't be in the instructions

I did this with my brother, whose is a SEAL. I started pullups, and he started pullups when I started pushups. He was gaining on me from the start and finished in 12 and change. Humbling.

Can't get to a pull up bar today as I'm at home with a sick family. But I was able to do everything else in 6:47. Pull ups would of been near the slowest, so maybe a true finsh time of ~14 min? Maybe next time I'll get the pull ups in!

First time with Angie I think, 27 minutes and pukie came around (could have been due to the previous nights extracurricular activities).
Been Crossfitting for three months and seen amazing results.
I was very impressed at my globo gym today when they through out a bench but kept the inner/outer thigh machine. Probably the most used piece of equipment in my gym, ridiculous. Definitely can't wait to get back to the tri-state area and join a CF gym.
Checked out gymjones.com, is there any relation to the Crossfit team? Seemed very similar in theory.

WELL I started off with a bang and then managed to sprain the ever-lovin'-bejesus out of my left ankle when I came off the chin up bar awkwardly. The irony is I set up 3 45lb plates so I'd have a larger platform to stand on in between reps, I've been paranoid about spraining my ankle on the small step we have!

Had an ominous feeling before the workout, like I just couldn't get in the right headspace, turns out there was a reason for that. Oh well, looks like I'm going to get that chance to work on my push ups, chins and all the other upper body exercises!

OK, I think I did Angie wrong. I kept switching back and forth between exercises in order to keep momentum, but it's starting to look like I was supposed to do 100 of one B4 moving to the next. Can someone who is certified PLEASE answer this question definitively for me and anyone else who is unsure? I would like to know that I am following the Coach's instructions. Thanks!

Those pull ups took up most of my time, once I got going on the push up I was unstopable, the squats hurt so much though! I pushed through and feel really good. I dont want to sound conceded but I finally feel comfortable enough to wear a tank top in the gym. Thanks so much cross fit! I love the workouts and I love the results, I am all about this for life! This was the first time that I timed this workout... and I finished it in 31.00

I did use the pull up assist machine for part of the pullups(30 of 'em) with 20# assistance. My hands hurt too badly after trying to kip before the workout. My calluses are sore.

Since I skipped out on the back squats on Friday, I made up for it today. And since I don't do much of the heavy lifting or the behind the neck stuff without my spotter, who is in the desert, I made up my own hell...

Still working on my pull ups so I did 200 squats. I broke the workout into 4 rounds of 50 squats, 25 push ups, 25 sit ups. I got through it really smooth. My personal modification made it much easier I am sure.

WOW I did it. I'm beat but it did. this is a huge accomplishment for me. I'm going to bed tired but happy. I have a pull-up structure that does not allow me to kip. oh well.

At pullup #77, my aggressive newbie kips (and the fact that I usually pullup with grippy kayaking gloves) allowed me to rip all the calluses off my right hand.

Readjusted my grip and attempted to finish the set, made it to #81.

So:

81 Pullups - 24:41.33 (including time examining hands and kicking dirt and throwing things)
100 Pushups (padded mini parallette pushup handles allowed me to do these missing portions of my right palm skin) - 17:02.84
100 Situps - 06:51.60
100 Squats - 06:32.49

Ouch. How long does it take after you rip away calluses before you can handle hanging from a bar again?

(Total time: 55:08.26 - soft, weak, and aiming for 45:00 or faster next time.)

This marks my first week on crossfit. I have a question about the kipping pullups. What is the thinking behind them? I saw a seal team guy had the same question a few days ago. I think Marines and Seals are like-minded in thinking a "kip" largely defeats the most difficult part of the exercise - getting from arms extended to arms at about 90 degrees. Of course that is probably why it took me 16.34 just to get 50 pullups using the strict method.

I think it is because the kipping part of the pullup uses your whole body and is more of a gymnastic move. It uses more of your whole body. There are workouts that have you do strict L pullups. If you do 100 kipping pullups, you will be just as beat if you do as many as you can with as little rest as you can. It also wrecks your ability to pump out situps at a fast pace as well. I hope that helps. Not so much a scientific explanation. I haven't been doing xfit for too long, but that is what I was told/what I have experienced.

Pullups took most of the time...though I was able to pump out 30 right off the bat, they quickly deteriorated to sets of 10 and then 5 and the 3...:)

My chest was kind enough to remind me that I just did Tabata pushups on Friday.
Now my chesticles really hurt!

FYI...Globogym was having their monthly PIZZA DAY! Where all the members can help themselves to as much pizza as they want. This a Fantastic business model.
Step 1) Only employ young inept trainers who specialize in "recreational fitness" and are completely close minded toward anything they don't "already know".
Step 2) Fill your gym with Fat people who have food craving and control issues.
Step 3) Supply them with the necessary tools but leave out any meaningful instruction and never judge anyone.
Step 4) Give 'em free pizza. Crush their will. Kill their ego and take from them their last remaining shred of Pride.
Step 5) Rake in the cash from all the insane people doing the same things but somehow expecting different results.

Incidentally, the suggestion of a "grilled chicken and salad day" actually put Globogym employees on the defensive. How dare I suggest something that interupts their cash-flow? :)

WOD: 33:15

Pull ups: All Kipping from elbows locked at the bottom to clavicles/ shoulders touching the bar.

Push ups: normal width hands, chest to floor.

Sit ups: un-anchored hands on hips from head on the floor to shoulders hit knees/thighs

Squats: A to A

I did this on the rest day to make it up. I focused on form and getting every rep to its fullest range of motion. This is about fifteen minutes slower than my best Angie. It was a good rest day workout/stretch.

Cooldown: Double Under Practice for about 10 minutes.

Psyched myself up by staring at the PU bar like someone else said. PU's in this are the problem. Managed the whole thing in 32:20. Funny, I was OK and on pace until the last of the squats--the last 20 to me almost as long as the previous sixty or so (did 100). For me it's the 7-8th round or set that kills.

100 pullups (about 4 min)
100 pushups (about 6 min)
100 Sit ups (About 3 min)
100 squats (about 4 min)

17 minutes total

Why do many people take so long on pull ups haha?
Don't give me because you weigh little, your muscles are made for YOUR body.

Also no kipping pull ups
and unsupported sit ups
