Been taking a break from the WODs for the last few weeks, doing a SS routine... will continue for another 5-6 weeks, most likely. Just thought I'd say I'm loving the WOD vids that have been posted lately, particularly OPT from yesterday.
Really inspiring, and really making me miss those WODs!
ahhh my favorite WOD. Not a moment too soon.
Oh Halleluiah a rest day! Looking forward to Saturdays workout. On the side I am going to try for my first 'real' pull up (with kip). Was too tired today after Lynne to get one. I am confident that I can get at least one!
That's a hell of a back.
I'll be hitting the whirlpool at the gym. Gotta make the most of the rest day.
Day 2 of my mandatory rest WEEK. I keep hurting myself, I'm not sleeping and I'm addicted to red bull and coffee. I need to reset. This will be my first break from CrossFitting since I started without being sick.
I Hang Power Cleaned 115# but I thought it was 100# and messed up my back. It was U G L Y. It's a PR but not worth it. I also pulled a muscle or something in my neck and I'm getting pounding headaches.
Banged out 22 tabata squats which is a PR by 2 for me.
Resting is really hard for me. I want to go go go.
Nadia: I have the pants that go with your shirt! Do we get a video of PhatHellen? That is some back! Who is that??
I could listen to Coach talk all day.
A rest day... I am relieved, yet also disappointed. It's almost funny how I enjoy subjecting my body to this pain every day. But I love it all the same.

Allison, how did your class go? Rest is an essential part of training.
About the Security article: I've been airport security for 3 years and I agree completely with the author. Also I do not fly anymore unless I absolutely have to. Not because of the terrorist threat, but because of the stupid security rules.
Do you know how easy it is to get a rocket launcher and take an airplane out from 5 miles outside an airport? Any airport.
Take care and have fun, Johan
I've worked for nearly 20 years in the semiconductor chemicals industry. I work with lots of nasty stuff that could lots of interesting things if mixed.
Within a week after 9-11 I flew to Austin TX to inspect a chemical delivery system at a customer location. Neatly packed in my carry on was my chemical respirator ‘gas mask’ and a variety of other interesting sundries. I boarded through Phoenix with hardy a cursory glance and no questions by any airport security personnel. I spent the better part of two days crawling around numerous chemical systems and at the end of the day went to Austin’s airport for my flight home. I was wearing my steel-toe work shoes, which I sent through the X-ray rather than set off the metal detector. The agent running the X-ray decided that my shoes would be a good candidate for their new trace ion detector and sent me over to that machine. I was nervous, another agent thoroughly swabbed the soles of my work shoes, I was sure that they would get some ‘hit’ on any number of exotics; sulfates, nitrate, ammonia, solvents, etc. I looked around and noted several bury National Guardsmen armed with their M16’s and sidearms. I pictured a pending body-cavity search…. And nothing. The security agent returned my shoes… they asked nothing about the chemical ‘gas mask’ in my carry on. Now, given the experience of the shoe-bomber and other ‘threats’, I wouldn’t likely get to do that again, but the TSA is really little more than a bandage… giving the perception of security in a system as full as holes a Swiss cheese.
The article mentions NOTHING about the biggest threat to air traffic, the near lack of screening of FREIGHT items which also go aboard airliners. One only need remember the inept storage of O2 generators on the ill-fated ValuJet flight 592 from Florida… few passengers realize that they are often sitting above a cargo hold filled with freight items packaged by minimum-wagers who are looking forward to their next smoke break or weekend binge rather than correctly packing and labeling hazardous goods. The volumes of these items are immense. And what of those who might want to do intentional harm, they will slip through. Not a quetion of if, but when.
Interesting article. I've often (only half-jokingly) suggested that in the post 9/11 world, the best way to deter hijackers is to mount an ASP collapsible baton on every seat back.
I don't want to get bulky, I just want to tone, is Crossfit right for me?
\I kid because I am insanely jealous
Finally trying to go 'cold turkey' on Crossfit for a day or 2, Allison ? lol ;-)
Wanted to get this WOD done today.. too much snow and the 911 calls came in today. Shame as this fit perfectly.. hopefully will make up in the am.

Heh, my third WOD is a rest day. Think I'll go for a run. :)
Regarding the article...I wonder how much of a global impact the discussed airport security changes have had? For example, up here in Canada the same senseless ban on carrying liquids onto planes applies. Unless, conveniently, you purchased said liquid beyond the guard station.
I'm guessing that's Annie and Eva T on the pullups?
Hey guys, this is rest day so I need some participation here. My last post is rather impersonal as it is basically a cut and paste from yesterday with new names added for the puppy.
Said puppy is female, Boston Terrier, 8 weeks, maybe 4lbs and can fit easily into a ball cap.
Joey,
I like Ares, always have.
I also like Laid Back Joey. Call him ‘laid’
Curious to see how it comes out. Paul
CCTJoey,
Quite a different dog than mine (110lb female Rottie), but I will pass on her name- which may not be exactly feminine, but is meaningful and relevant to all those who serve. Plus it is a damn good name...Justice. ..there it is.

#10 - interesting post.
The article - law of diminishing returns applies, as always, to most law enforcement.
You know, I don't think I wait any longer now than I ever did. I don't find myself as offended by it as I do the federalization of the TSA in the first place. Pointless expansion of govt. Silly. Expensive.
Hadn't heard the liquid explosive bit was so overblown - then #10 reminds us it's not just explosives to worry about when one is on a plane.
It would of course be much safer if they issued a knife to every passenger willing to take one. If it comes to it, I'll have to settle for the coffee pot, fire extinguisher, bunch of soda cans ripple fired from the passengers who cover those rushing the bad guys, bunch of bags from the overhead bin thrown at the soon to be former bad guys, etc etc. I hope I never have to do anything that scary, but it comes my way I fully intend not to sit there like a sheep and be vaporized when the plane hits a building.
Allison, I hope you "get your healing on."
Missed this last month, another home run from Steyn:

Great pic!
And I can not stand British humor.
That is about the most you will ever hear out of me for a rest day.
Looking good ladies!
My day off includes an early morning hockey game and then a 1.5 hour drive to the big city until evening when I get to do it all again.
Much needed WOD :)

It must be true what they say about Americans not getting our sense of humour. The Chaser is an Australian import by the way and I usually get of the floor crying after it has been on.
I feel culturally significant now knowing I can laugh at the Office - from the Poms, Family Guy or Sienfeld from you blokes and still crack up at the likes of the chaser. It sort of like being multilingual in a comedy context.
Rest Hard!
when i saw the pic, i thought, "oh my god, Eva is ripped" then "hey, is that nadia?" i have never met either of these women -- is that weird that i can pick them out that quickly?
nice work ladies, great pic!
ck
I know! I know!
Nadia and Patty, fantastic picture! Looks familiar...
Would the Aussies have gotten away with their stunts in the humorless environment of North America? Somehow I doubt it, and I think it's to our detriment.
All I can say is thank you. To all of the people who post. This is the best community. Everybody is so helpful, inspirational, and motivational. Thank you Coach(es) for bringing us all together.
Hey k-star, you had the best job during the workout! You'll vouch for me when I say the view was just as good from the front as it was from the back right?
Two super cool girls and great athletes. Crossfit girls are such hotties!
For a more macro discussion of the micro issue raised by the articles posted this rest day see:
http://fora.tv/2007/10/29/Niall_Ferguson_After_the_Bush_Doctrine
It is a video recording of a talk at the Hoover Institute by a conservative historian, Niall Ferguson.
An aside: I doubt anyone one needs to hear my two cents on this point, but the crossfit website and the fitness instruction it provides to the public at no cost is just amazing. It is a gift. I found this website accidentally two years ago, googling some sort of search term for a work-out program I could do at home, because I could not stand to workout in a commercial gym that offered misogyny and 'enter-tainment' as part of the package deal that went along with access to a rowing machine. Thanks.
Re: Airline Security Policy
I think this guy almost totally misses the point about the new liquid restrictions. In America, policy directives rarely are considered in the context for which they were originally conceived. Almost always they are mediated by the interests of big business and corporate power. Please step back from the issue of security and think of the boon to Coke, Pepsi, Johnson & Johnson, et al, bottom line.
What a perfect scenario for sales without the bother and hassle of marketing! Captive audience inside the security zone. You need a bottle of water or some kind of "product", who are you going to turn to? Bang, they gotcha!
Does anybody have the video (or was it a slide show), that talks about the formula which leads to "intensity"? It was a great explanation about what it is we accomplish when we put out everyday. If anybody has it, I'd love to get a copy. Thanks.
The saddest part is the number of federal employee union members it created.
We have not come close to paying what we will in about a year.
I'm just waiting until a suicide bomber has 30lbs. of HME implanted in his/her abdominal cavity (who needs normal-length intestines when you're going to go boom in a couple weeks?) with a fully non-metallic and sealed package / firing device. Hell, if you were really creative, you could make it a shaped charge anchored to the fool's spine so they could ensure that they pop the airplane / hit wing brace points.
No matter how stringent the security procedures are (even with totally seperate baggage planes, full clothing replacement pre-flight, full-body MRI scans, etc...) there will always be a way for people who are as deranged as wannabe-martyrs to make attempts.
Isolationism does not work, pure defense does not work, and we will not rid ourselves of this problem until we can convince the extremists to desist (because you cannot reasonably expect to wipe them out nor wipe out their resources through purely kinetic operations).
CCT Joey,
Do you ever thing about the hippies out there that are paying your salary instead of spending their money according to their own rational self-interest? Union-members pay income tax too don't you know. Why don't you write a letter to your local chapter, and thank it for the part it's played in the survival of the American middle class? Or are/were your parents members of the professional classes? I doubt it. And I think you're proud of it. Working class but better, isn't that the story? Bootstrapper/Jackbootter!
same in Oz, I fly all the time and the thing that really gets me is the security requirements are different from airport to airport.
what about buses, trains ,etc? they are full of people to blow up and yet erequire no screening at all.
We have allowed this small band of terroist nutjobs to take away many of our freedoms via our elected goverments who keep us scared of the boogieman enough to let them do whatever they want in the name of security.
anyway - rant off.
did a beautiful hours ocean row last evening, still 38c at 630pm and no breeze.....just perfect.enjoy your weekend.

CHB, My parents were neither. They were entrepreneurs. We passed through all of them several times.
The hippies are not paying my salary instead of their own rational interests. Hippies have no rational interests. If they are tax payers, they are tax payers. I am one too. I think I will thank me first and the hippies can get in the back of the line behind those that bathe, downwind. The second they start to block up and form a drum circle, I am getting out the fire hose.
Silly hippies.
Gonna try Lynne this morning, but am hurting. Staff Rutter has mullered me!
Bin Laden has got to be laughing his ass off. The best part is its not costing him a dime...
How many terrorists have the TSA caught? None AFAIK. Shortly after 9/11, on the way to Vegas w/ the bachelor party that consisted of 1 Thai, 1 Vietnamese, 1 Puerto Rican, and 1 Pakistani (non-citzen) in the U.S on a student Visa, guess who gets picked to be searched? Yep, yours truly - U.S citizen, registered Republican, Irish Catholic, U.S. Army officer. There was a 85 yr old WWII vet being searched as well. Sometimes I'm just sure Al Qaeda's gonna win & I wanna throw my hands in the air. We don't we just smarten up & do it like the Israelis. PC b.s. is a waste of $$ and endangers everyone.
btw, remember the TSA skit on SNL w/ Dane Cook? - Just classic! Sorry, but I couldn't find a current link.
exactly what I was thinking #42
Well that was a surprise. Big PB in Lynne. My last was a total of 126 today, 140. My improved a little but my pullups increased big time.
Finally got a chance to watch the videos from this week. They were all awesome!
Joey-
I think Pood is the best name for your puppy.
Justice (recommended by x24696) is also a very cool name too. We once knew a NCO in the Army with the last name Justice.
I6-
The reason you were picked and not your friends, is because you are military, so therefore making you most likly to be safe to search and then the security has met their quota. Every military guy that I know that flies is surprised when they aren't searched.
I love British and Austrailian comedy! Holy crap, I had tears running down my face.
Thanks for the articles Coach.

How about Frannie Elizabsth, and then make up a WOD in her honor by combining the 2??
Spc. John P. Sigsbee, 21, of Waterville, N.Y. died in Balad, Iraq January 16th.
-You will always be our hometown hero, your sacrifice is something that will never be forgotten, may you rest in peace.
No rest today. Rested a few days in a row while playing nurse. It felt good, but I am skipping this rest day.
Now what to do.....
ALLISON~ I know that you know INTELLECTUALLY why you need to rest, and the benefits of said rest. EMOTIONALLY is where we get caught. The 18 inches between out heart and our head, although it doesn't appear to be far, is actually an infinitely long distance that make it impossible for the two to connect. Accept it, take it one day at a time, SUBSTITUTE...menaing when you would normally train, do something else equally as time consuming, ...breathe in , breathe out and move on.
Most of te time when I have taken a week off, I have suffered through it, not getting nearly as much out of it as I could have. However, the last few times I have taken a week off, I accepted that I was GOING TO take it off, enjoyed it, when I looked back on it was SO grateful that I had done so, and didn't suffer through it.
It's just my two cent honey, but being a CF junkie...I know what it is like when the fix takes a back seat for a rx'd amount of time. Look at this as your WOD for the next few days....as much rest as possible, 24 hours...5 days.....
POST RESULTS!
PLUS, I am NOT going to rest today....SO I will will train hard enough for us both!! LOL!
Sending a caring thought your way.
Rest day - as RX'd! haha!
didn't read the article, but read the comments.....i lived in England for 4 years and i have to say, i love british humor! Little Britain and Two Pints of Lager are two of my favorite shows! I still quote them!
the puppies got up early today... 25 degrees (in AZ for Pete's sake!) and they come jogging in like its nothing.. was kinda hoping they would stay home in bed.

Not at all a crossfit related name, but...
My dad had a boston bull named Chili Bean. God, what a great name. Try it out. Go outside. Yell, "Chli Bean" in ridiculously high-pitched voice, with slight southern accent.
Excellent.
The ripped backs are awesome!!
The Chaser - that was a good one to make fun of airport security not just in the US but also abroad. I would think that in Europe, it would just be easier to board a train - is there stringent security to board the train through the "Chunnel" as there is for boarding a plane?
Did Lynne yesterday - did not have time to post.
270 lbs - 10 10 8 8 6
Pullups (with Gravitron) - 6 6 6 6 6
I then did the 3.3 miles - I took an hour to walk it on the treadmill at an incline of 8.
Taking a nice rest day - I may work out - depends on when the cable company gets here to install my new stuff.
Followed my own advice and did a little search; obviously searched in the wrong place. Help a brother out--what are the specs for Phat Helen?
Thanks.
I love that video! The last bit with the names reminds me of the Simpsons. Funny stuff!
CCTJOEY,
Just throwing this out there, but you could name your small, cuddly dog after your favorite NCO (and make sure he finds out about it)!
And I whole-heartedly agree with your sentiments on hippies.
Those backs really are rockin!
Catchin up....
5km run indoor 200m track - 19:45
I need help from anyone who can help with this,please...
Physical therapists, Doctors or even better, crossfitters who have had experience in stregthening serratus posterior to decrease clavical dysfucntion, causing acromium to press down on the bursa (causing infalmation) and creating an impingement of supraspinatous in acromioclavicular joint.
Bottom line, weak serratus is causing shoulder problems and pain. Any experienced based suggestions to stregthen this?
Appreciate your help.
(Still no rest day though. Oddly, Doc said to ADD exercises...not less WODing.)
oh yeah...as a crossfitter and a massage therapist, those are some beautiful backs! what could be more beautiful than a strong woman? amazing.
At the end of coach's vid., it says you can find it in the journal section. I still can't find it. Can someone post the correct link?
thanks.
CCT Joey,
Well put. I think you should name your dog "Acky", as in Hacky-sak. Either that or "Shop-keep", in keeping with your entrepreneurial lineage.

Don't know if this makes sense, but I rehabbed my shoulder over a few short months by substituting the pullups for body weight rows. I would find a low lying bar (like the smith machine or low lying rings), put my feet up on a chair while hanging under neath and begin rowing. This seemed to pull whatever was being "pinched" and gave me my R.O.M. back with no pain.
I remembered that both pushup or bench pressing type of movements coupled with lat pull movements actually begin to pull the shoulders forward if no movement is done to counter them - a row.
Like I said, it took a few months, but I kept at it.
AlliNYC: I know what you mean. I've been resting due to illness. It sux. My wife forces me to stay in as I try to sneak away to hit the WOD's. My last WOD was the Filthy 50, and being sick definitely hurt the numbers and after hurt me as well. I still may sneak out to do today's WOD.

Does anyone know where to get a good workout timer?
Interesting on the pic - different use of thumbs on their grip on the bar. Gosh - wonder who came from a gymnastics background ;-).

Have you seen the South Park hippie episode? You and Cartman would so get along! Its one of the funniest tepisodes of any show that i have seen. Essentially, a huge hippie jam band festival comes to South Park, and Cartman takes it upon himself to get rid of them. Awesome episode, even if you don't like South Park, you'll get a kick out of their portrayal of hippies!
Okay, gotta share this with you all.

Allison. Watch that low back stuff, if it was your low back. I injured mine doing tire flips in June 06. After all this time, PT, injections and recomendations for surgery (which I declined) i'm at about 80%. Quite a scare. A powerlifter showed me a reverse hyper-machine that worked wonders quickly.
Nadia, thanks. Weighted PU? Heavier swing?

For those of you who haven't seen/played it before, here's the Airport Security game http://www.addictinggames.com/airportsecurity.html
It does a good job of making you feel like you are in the midst of the seemingly ever changing regulations on what is/isn't allowed.
CCTJOEY,
My suggestion for your pup's name is Infidel and you have all kinds of abbreviations off that name.

After 5 days in the field I planned on executing this WOD anyway
Nice pic ladies! Strong, beautiful backs, love it!
Question: I just watched that Helen demo where the guy gets it done in under 7 minutes. Great job, but what's up with his ROM?
I mean, super wide grip on the bar and only getting his nose over (instead of chin). Those are not legit pull-ups. Not even close.
Plus, his KB swings weren't full extension either. Honestly, I now have no idea how my times compare to those posted on this site.
Sometimes I see times that I think are way too fast. So do most people think that his ROM was legit? Is that how you workout? Is that why your time is so fast?
Sorry to seem cynical, but I'm serious. I want to know what you do. Thanks.
Regarding the article-
I've been saying since the formation of the TSA post 9-11, that the TSA was Washington's knee jerk reaction to try to show the ignorant masses of traveling sheep that our elected officials are doing something about the perceived terrorist threat.
On 9-11, the world learned that a passive resistant reaction to a terrorist threat no longer works. That being said the best security system we could ever use during another take over is called "YO-YO". "You're On You're Own"
#86-
watch the Jeff Martone demo videos and pay attention.
from what i can see in OPT's video his chin was above the bar and his kettlebell swings are perfect.

The Gift #86-
I think OPT's ROM was pretty damn good. His KB swings looked beautiful. There was one point where his ROM was getting close to questionable on the pull-ups and I remember someone from HQ (Nicole i think) yelling get your chin over the bar and he corrected it immediately. There is no denying OPT is legit.
Allison- enjoy your rest, i know it is tough.
not related to article...
haven't done a crossfit workout in two months. all lifts have increased considerably since then. while doing crossfit, my lifts dropped to all time lows (although my run times increased to pr's). even if my lifts sucked while doing crossfit, do you think the crossfit workouts have had a correlation (albeit delayed) to the improvement of my lifts now?
i'm closing in on weights i used to move while active in athletics. i thought those days were long gone, but i'm beginning to think otherwise now. i even threw the murph in there last week and finished in 27 flat, a pr, and that's without having done a crossfit workout in a while.
what's the deal? perhaps it is just from the change of pace? maybe if i return to crossfit in a few months, i will be able to finish the deads/handstand push up workout in 6 secs.
Anyone (besides InfidelSix #43, obviously) notice the similarity in recent rest day topics? Coach dished us a discussion on Political Correctness, on the pros and cons of Anti-Semitism, and now on our loonie airport security system. At their core of these issues lies irrational bits, stretched and woven into a dropcloth.
Definitions are situational, and ex post facto. Words are like little slates in the air onto which the moderator, critic, or opponent writes his own meaning. Whole subtheories, built around equality, cultural or moral equivalence, self-esteem, innocent-until-proven-guilty, and you-are-entitled-to-your-[PC] opinion, are axioms.
El Al has a great antiterrorist record. How did that happen, and why isn't it our model? Too Semitic?
Instead, our post-9/11 airport security system is an implementation of the PC prohibition against racial profiling. At its roots, the ban nurtures Victimhoodism. We must not offend anyone (except Jews, right?). Why not? If you have some hideous or merely obnoxious practice, you need to know it, and that it is taboo. Assimilate.
If you happen to look like the bad guys, develop a sense of humor. Too often he who looks like a bad guy acts like a bad guy, and gets an attorney.
By the way, Bobby Fischer, the Jewish anti-Semite who welcomed 9/11 died today.
I am from the snap-out-of-it school of psychiatry, the get-over-it school of victimization.
We have dumbed down our education system to make passing grades some kind of race-based entitlement. We promote condom use by adults and children as if AIDS were a disease of the general populace. We conduct random searches at airports as if little old white ladies were equally distributed among suicide bombers.
We make no effort to link travelers to their luggage, their ethnic background, their destination or point of origin, their clothing, their gender, their method of payment, their fellow travelers, whether they were madrassa trained, their headdress, or whether they would like the pork chops today.
Would you mind sitting with the Marshall?
Ignorance is winning. Bureaucracies erect barriers against experience. It's not so much a triumph of the left as it is an erosion of intellect.
À priori conjectures trump à posteriori knowledge.
If you think racial profiling is the answer, they'd better start checking the young white males. Timothy McVeigh was one, I believe.
My theory on the recent "advances" in airport screening measures are that the development of perfectly-sized carry-on luggage with nice little wheels, that was enabling all the light-packers of the world to go on two week vacations without checking luggage, was leading to an epedemic of empty cargo holds and overstuffed overhead bins.
What better way to force people to check luggage but to start outlawing the carrying-on of shampoo, toothpaste, and nail clippers; using 'enhanced security in the post 9/11 era' as a pancea for the unrest that was sure to follow?
Light Packers Unite! Should we start a union? Perhaps a million light-packers march on the whitehouse would be in order. We could all take trains in protest...
#92 Jeff
I'm in the midst of a book that addresses some of the issues you raise from a different context but, I think, nonetheless relevant. The title is, "HARE BRAIN TORTOISE MIND".
It suggests our reliance on strictly intellectual ways of learning about reality are incomplete at best because we have experiential modalities that create, what would be termed more accurately, "know how" or simply common sense that often defies articulation.
I have a sense that there is a connection between today's discussion and that hypothesis.
Check it out

i cannot recommend yoga enough for nearly all issues related to the smaller muscles of the posterior chain. not pilates-yoga hybrid stuff (though these forms certainly have benefits, too), but pure yoga. aside from working your serratus posterior and all of the other minor core muscles, the flexibility gains you may make will directly benefit your WODs.
at the very least, i recommend speaking with a yoga teacher about your specific issue and developing some set of poses/exercises to regularly perform. i am by no means qualified to make such specific recommendations; however, my yoga experience (while CFing) has been beneficial enough to know that it will help you out.
2nd the yoga reccomendation.
1 sub one WOD/week with 90min hot yoga. Great for injury prevention. I call it MEditation Black Box.
#86 The gift, another doubter rears his head. I'm quite sure that they wouldn't have posted the video if they didn't think his form was legit.
How would you increase the ROM any more on the swings? He reached full extension at the top and went deep at the bottom, any more range of motion and he'd dislocate his arms. Jeff Martone, the KB guru himself, barely comes to forehead height.
Nadia is right, Nicole told him to get higher over the bar and he did, immediately, in the middle of his set. Hand width is of zero consequence in this instance as is your choice of grip. If his hands were closer together he'd have to pull that much further so when time is the key a wider grip is more efficient.
Believe me, I was there and OPT was too legit to quit.
Your political links have been right on. Land of the free and home of the brave indeed!
A little off topic, but since it's a rest day...
I was floored at yesterday's post by OPT Mommy saying that OPT does a 45 minute warm up for Fran. I know it's important to warm up more thoroughly for the shorter, more instense workouts a la a sprinter's warm up, but I had no idea it was that long. I typically do a
CFWU or the Greg A WU, but nothing that lasts more than 15-20 mins.
Though I don't have specifics on the OPT Warm Up, I put together a long, dynamic warm up yesterday that might be similar:
3 mins of joint mob/shadow box
Active hip and post. chain stretching/samson stretch
10 kip swings/ice cream makers
10 jumping pullups
3 mins row
10 pushups
10 pullups
15 BTB Squats
10 Front Squats w/ bar
Burgener W/U x2
10 OH Squats
Repeated the entire sequence again but without join mob and rowing
The whole thing took about 35 minutes and then I dove right into Lynne. It was by far the best Lynne performance I've had to date and I can only imagine how well I would have stormed through Cindy or Elizabeth after that warm up. To anyone who thinks a long warm up might hurt their WOD performance, I'd suggest trying a long, dynamic warm up and see how it turns out.
I agree with the articles and the apparent uselessness of the screenings. Whats a solution? By the way, wearing the INFIDEL shirt while getting searched brought alot of smiles to those who walked through.
Way off topic but this made me feel so warm and happy I had to share it.

"...not so much a triumph of the left as it is an erosion of intellect."
Jeff, that was great. Sad, but true.
Joey, why don't you consider naming him after one of your favorite characters. We got a 8wk black kitten and his name is Jack Sparrow ... Captain Jack Sparrow. Makes me laugh. We call him little Jack for now.
#93 Steve, the McVeigh argument is a red herring. He was a criminal who committed an act of terrorism, but he wasn't part of a widespread terrorist movement or organization. He didn't subscribe to an the ideology of Global Jihad, he was just after revenge, like a disgruntled postal worker. There was no eloborate network of training, financing, and operational control. This is why profiling white Christian males would fall under the "erosion of intellect category." Completely ineffective and inappropriate. They are categorically NOT the threat. You'd have better luck profiling for COlumbine & VT shooters. That said, anyone wanting to put a truckload of fertilizer into the overhead bin should probably be scrutinized.
Do you think the McVeigh's of the world represent a threat equivalent to state sponsored terrorism and global jihad? Or is this a just a liberal/"open-minded" impulse?
CCTJOEY,
She's a beautiful boston! I had two boston terriers myself - Chelsea and Spike.
I like the Frannie Elizabeth idea that jodi colbert posted.
#103 InfidelSix:
Thoughtful commment. However, your last two questions represent a false dichotomy. And I think you've made a subtle bait and switch, without meaning it. The issue I was addressing is how to identify individuals--in an airport, say--who pose a security threat. What you're talking about is a wider issue: which groups should law enforcement worry might pose a threat because of their agenda. When you get down to it, the agenda of the 19 9-11 hijackers is a side issue; the problem is they wanted to down the planes and they did. What upsets us is knowing that they slipped through security (in the context of this discussion). So the issue here is how the individual security screener can recognize an individual passenger who's a threat. It's akin to the issue police officers face when they stop someone for questioning on the street.
It's not an easy issue and I don't have an answer. However, I don't think the answer is, take the extremely small number of people who've downed commercial airliners, see what they look like, and then detain every would-be passenger who looks similar. I think the vast majority of people who look like them superficially, do not subscribe to "global jihad" and will not attempt to commit acts of terrorism. Just as most Timothy McVeigh look-alikes don't have a paranoid anti-government world view and don't want to bomb federal buildings.
There has to be a better way to make airplanes safe than putting prejudice in action among security officers.
I think your term "liberal" is red herring, by the way. This is about security, and the best use of taxpayer money, and how to evaluate whether airport security is working or not. I don't see how political preference matters in this case.
Steve
Did anyone else notice the parallel between the BMJ article calling for measurable standards in the effectiveness of security practices and the linked journal article where coach called for measurable standards in the effectiveness of physical fitness programs? The BMJ article proposes the same thing for air travel security that Coach proposes for fitness. Coincidence or vast right-wing conspiracy?
Joey,
I was going to suggest that you name your dog Wulfhilde after the daughter of Duke Magnus of Saxony but I have to admit that I like Pood way better.
Yesterday's WOD Lynne:
bp 12/9/9/7/5
pu 15/12/10/7/5
44/m/158#
oh yeah, and you just KNOW that about four people at TSA headquarters are working furiously on a letter to the editors of the NY Times trying to refute all their points about why airport security really isn't ridiculous and why taking our shoes off is important and why the 3 oz. rule was carefully researched and is the right amount, and so forth. You gotta love bureaucracy. It's only real goal is to perpetuate itself. If it turns out not to actually work, the answer they will come up with won't be to eliminate it, the answer will be to give it more money so it can get bigger and do a 'better' job.

Hmmm...rather glad it's a rest day. Here on Capitol Hill we're a bit preoccupied by the arrest of a guy with a crossbow and samurai sword outside our offices.
Thanks for the support guys. Resting is really hard ;) I'm going totally nuts.
I'm going to cry if my everything still hurts next weekend. Nadia I feel like I sound like you before your cert last week. I'm worred that the weekend is going to be ruined. It looks like you felt all better for your weekend!
I'm really not happy that I have to take a whole week off. I feel like i'm going to be weak, lazy and fluffy when I go to Cali. I'm going to do some road trippin the week after and hit up a bunch of CrossFit gyms. That should get me back on track. Both Santa Cruz gyms and Mikes gym are on my list and a few others. I dragging my CrossFit coach Mike with me this time for a few days.
Bye Bye AllisonNYC Hello AllieCali :)
I'm going to the Black Box tonight to cheer on the Elements class during their first Fran. I'm going to wear jeans so I can't workout. I asked everyone not to throw kettlebells and dynamax balls at me when I show up.
Johan #9: It went really well. I was nervous at first which I wasn't expecting but once I got in the zone it was great. I'm coaching again on Wednesday. I was surprised how my personality changed when I started coaching. I was way more serious than I normally am. I guess that's how it should be and it felt so awesome. Everyone did a great job. I got lots of use out of that Barbell cert since we did presses. I can't wait for Wednesday. The CrossFitters at South Brooklyn are the stuff. It's wonderful working with them.

I agree with some of the other post regarding OPT's form on the kettlebell swings. This was after watching the series by jeff martone. As he explains the swing, it does not matter how high you go (ie forehead is sufficient). The idea is to create momentum with your hips and the kettlebell becomes weightless. Your hands should be on the same horizontal plane as the kettlebell handle, not above it (which OPT demonstrates in the video). The swing is really a core/hip movement rather than a shoulder exercise.
As for the pullups, I hear people complain about ROM on videos all the time and I would argue that from the angle most are shot, you can not really tell if his chin is clearing the bar or not. I will have to take the people word who were there.
just my 2 cents
Not that my opinions matter much, but -
Allison - REST HARD. this goes equal with work hard. I screwed myself pretty good in december and got tendenitis in both knees and jacked up both shoulders since i wouldn't be smart and rest when my body told me it needed it.
J Rock - i 3rd (or 4th, whatever it is) the yoga thing... my wife has been making me do it a good bit since the above mentioned injuries and it's been helping.
On today's topic - i fly frequently for my job - and i hate it. I have no real fact based thoughts to share on this, so i'll leave it at that.
thanks to all for the interesting reading.

Was it just me, or did Patrick Smith's NYT article come across as trite and self-entitled?
Yes, there are security measures.
Yes, they inconvenience you.
No, they are not soviet breadlines.
Yes, that half-soy, resstreto pulled, mocha-latte goes in the trashcan before you get to the front of the security line.
In contrast, the BMJ's article brings up the interesting question of whether or not the increases in security spending is directly relatable to the safety of airline passengers - And, can this be measured and tested with scientific protocols? The article reminded me of Coach's journal lectures regarding quantitative testing of the efficacy of fitness programs.
And the video of the two dudes in the plastic bags at the airport brought a smile to my face.
-Gotta love irreverence!
i decided to take this day to try to practice the muscle-up. first let me say that at this point it feels like i'll never be able to do one. i cannot believe how hard the transition from pulling yourself up, to rolling your shoulders is! can anyone please give me some pointers on how to get stronger in that area? i have just been doing the 120 dips and 120 pull-ups. is there anything else to try?
thanks
chuck
allison-
you are right that is pretty much how i felt before the cert. i will tell you this being sick beforehand forced me to rest and take it easy. it was a blessing in disguise. i had a pretty light week before hand and took thurs-fri off. my body felt gross/soft (i.e. small in the wrong places large in the wrong places) but i went into the cert feeling rested and not too sore (that didn't last long as we did bottom to bottom tabata squats in the first 1/2 of the first day). your road trip sounds like a blast, so try to relax this week (i know i know i need to take my own damn advice blah blah blah...;-) so you can enjoy cali.

My thoughts regarding the "questionable" ROM and technique in OPT's "Helen" vid.
I watch almost every WOD video that comes out with each post and I have to say that if anyone in the vids is not doing the WOD correctly, it is noted in plain view, for all to see.
One example is the Annie/Greg "Elizabeth" WOD. Greg drops the bar down early on the 1st 23 cleans without coming to full extension. This is noted in the video.
I didn't see anything noted for OPT's "Helen".
Again, AWESOME performance.
#98. Gaucion. Stop Drinking the Kool-Aid. Let me qualify that by saying I crossfit and love it. But seriously, think for yourself.
How do you do pull-ups? Wide grip and chin barely over the bar? Asked another way: If I only squat down into a 1/4 squat to be "more efficient" and "faster," is that legit?
My question is: does everyone limit their range of motion like OPT just to go faster?
I really don't care how you do it except for comparison purposes. obviously going fast is fun and beneficial and OPT went fast. But for comparison purposes, it makes it very difficult for me to know where I am.
For instance I do all pull-ups with my hands about shoulder with apart. I try to hit neck to collar bone on the bar. I open up my hips when I stand up on KB swings. How about you?
Had so much fun on the run (need to get the dog out more she was slowing me down) I did the 5k on the row today.
5K - 20:39 damper at 9. Still searching for the optimal setting for speed.
124:
Are you kidding around or what? I just re-watched that vid for the 3rd time and I don't get what you are saying. Or, maybe you don't get it?
#124: Why don't you do it OPT's way and let us know what your time is?
And please share with us what your time is doing it your way, which we now know is flawless.
My guess is you've done that workout less than 3 times if you've done it at all. BTDT's know better than to worry about stuff like that.
#124, The Gift.
Dude, I just watched the video again.
Over the bar, barely, is over. Wide grip, narrow grip, it's up to you. His arms are extended at the bottom and his chin over the bar at the top, full ROM. That's a good pull up every day of the week. As coach says, is all about work capacity. More work in less time=a higher work capacity.
i'm glad i'm not the only one who saw OPT go over the bar. and what does the width of your grip have to do the the price of tea in china? a pull up is a pull up. this posting actually mad me so mad i am shaking. i'll make sure i shake with a narrow grip and hyperextend my arms over my head though, just so it counts.
that should read: made me mad.... see, can't even type.
How do I calculate total power output for a workout? Thanks for any info.!
I love cross fit. I love this site. But I am so offended by the air security article you posted, I question my past promotion of this site. Please stay away from crackpot security journalist links on this site. It detracts from your legitimacy.
I am a current intelligence professional and a former special operations soldier. That article is crap. And that is my professional analysis...
Cheers
Mr. Gift, everyone else can debate with you OPT's ROM etc.
I may in fact differ from the majority of the people here, perhaps even in CF, on this matter. But -- if you push people enough, I don't think so, I think most everyone's with me on this.
I don't concern myself as you seem to with others' techniques -- unless they're my friends and I want to help them and I think they're shorting themselves out of ignorance or carelessness; or, unless there's safety in question.
I'm perfectionistic and obsessive about my own technique. I may hold myself to an overly strict standard just from ignorance. Good on me. When or if it matters someday, I can adjust to a more efficient technique that improves my score. If so, it was probably to my advantage all along.
You do Helen for the same crowd, let them help you refine your ROM so it matches OPT's... and how much of a difference do you think it's going to make? One rep? A cumulative 3 seconds, 4, 5?
Meanwhile, do you consider yourself to be producing more work and higher intensity than those who are posting fantastic scores on here? Is THAT really something to be pissy about?
I'm doing my double-unders with a heavy rope and weighted handles. I'll never report that in my scores. My kipping pull-ups are inefficient. My subs for box jumps are actually more difficult. I suppose, a la your worldview, I keep plugging away and not fussing about it out of stupidity...
You seem to be a person who's concerned that some of these elite maniacs may have jumpropes slightly lighter than yours.
WTF are you in fitness for? Measuring your dick, or self-improvement? You want to seem better, or you want to BE better? Which standard matters more at the end of the day -- your neighbor Mr. Jones, or your actual physical strength when measured against the need to pull your wife out of a burning vehicle? Are you gonna whine that other vehicles had lighter doors?
Perhaps the most beautiful thing about CF is that it's about real world functionality. There's an ultimate standard of truth, reality, in which we're all measured. This isn't a game -- the ultimate concern of CF's effectiveness is not an arbitrary standard, lines drawn in the sand, people whining whether one standard is 6 inches the other standard 6.25.
Form a union, brother, make it political, find a bunch of whiners who are primarily concerned with how they measure up compared to others rather than to their own abilities and the challenges of an operation.
But don't expect a lot of sympathy around here, and don't expect high real world performance from the kind of people who join and sympathize with you.
...I am from the snap-out-of-it school of psychiatry, the get-over-it school of victimization... (Have you chosen your school based on empirical study, or is this more a reflection of your will than your understanding?)
...Bureaucracies erect barriers against experience....(interesting, more? sounds a little like Lenin though)
...À priori conjectures trump à posteriori knowledge...(Isn't the a priori(ness) of a conjecture just a matter of timing, it is only a priori until it is tested? There's nothing silly about an a priori conjecture in and of itself. Now if you mean that bureaucracies operate on conjectures that they never intend to or cannot test, then you're on to something, but then whether you're left or right makes little difference. What is the probability of a terrorist attack on the US? Impossible to determine. And a "right wing" government repeats its a priori conjecture, using it as the rational for the creation a giant bureaucracy called the Department of Homeland Security)

I love the 'Chili Bean' name. Go outside and yell it as suggested. It's hilarious.

Feebie, with all due respect, anybody can be offended over anything at any time. You should state what is offensive and why. It's not enough to simply be offended ... it detracts from your ... ... legitimacy.
Steve, I thought you were promoting profiling single white Cristian males. And my opposition to that was that you're profiling the wrong group. But I'm not opposed to profiling.
"This is about security, and the best use of taxpayer money"
If that's true, the best use of taxpayer money would be to implement something that is effective. Simple as that. Implement what's effective. Any program that isn't IS a waste of $$$. Profiling works - it's effective. Searching old ladies b/c we want to "be fair"(and this is about feelings) isn't. I mentioned "liberal" because they consistently choose feelings over effectiveness. Also, because they love to mention mcVeigh as an argument against the idea that Islam has a problem w/ terrorist extremists.
Profiling is not mean or disrespectful. It doesn't have to be insulting, it is to be used professionally as a tool.
Profiling is discrimination informed by experience and/or probability. We all do it every day. Businesses do it (called marketing), bums do it, the IRS does it, singles in bars do it, even when you choose to avoid the shady looking mechanic, or to eat/not eat at the greasy-spoon taco stand. The FBI does it to find serial killers. So why wouldn't we use it to prevent terrorist attacks?
Is it fair? No, but neither is life. It's no ones fault (actually it is the jihadi's fault), it just is. Point being, ignoring effective means of safety & considering everyone, including little old ladies, for random search is voluntarily substituting reality for make believe. And that's a waste of assets, and that reduces EVERYONE's safety.
It's not about predjudice, it's about police work.
1 Week and counting to my first cert .. man am I excited... so looking forward to the critiques of my bad form so I can improve. yey

i'm military and the only time i have been searched was prior to enlisting. the only reason i was searched was because i had purchased a one way ticket, i suppose.
Its funny how everbody is so concerned with the "19 Hijackers" and there agenda. I think more questions need to be asked about 9-11, and answers need to be demanded by Americans.
I think i'm about to have a rant that may go off topic but here it goes...
How do buildings fall straight down?
How does a highrise building collapse with NO structural damage and three small fires on three seperate floors? Again straight down? Anyone heard of tower #7?? Thats a pretty scary thought as a fireman. I've been to plenty of highrise fires much worse then tower 7 and there was no collapse. Infact the thought of it would be laughable
Never in aviation history has a plane disintegrated from a crash. Where's the footage of the Pentagon crash? And why did they pour dirt all over the crash site they next day. Apparently the fire from the crach was so hot the plane melted into nothing yet they were able to find finger prints. (?)
Why was there at least 4 other war time exercises going on at the exact same time as 9-11 , with at least one specifically dealing with people flying planes into buildings.
How does metal reach "molten" levels when jet fuel does not burn hot enough to liquify metal?
A lot of things that happened on 9-11 are scientifically impossible the way they are explained to have happened. I'm afraid we know more about what goes on in Donald Trumps boardroom then we do about what actually happened on 9-11.
I think people need to be more upset with the lack of information from there own elected government then they do at the actual event.
Did you know that the head of Pakastans secret agency wired 100 000 dollars to one of the highjackers and that same figure head was in the U.S having breakfest with US gov't officials on the mourning of 9-11?
Anyways i could go on forever , but i won't as i'm sure i'm already going to get called out on many things i've said.
Hey Jeff Glassman, have u ever seen Zeitgeist???
I think every American should see this movie, but be careful it will make u mad. And if your very religious i suggest fast forwarding over part one as it may close off your mind to the rest of movie. Its basically about 9-11, war and the American banking fraud. Very good movie. If nothing else will make u think.
hey
Yipes, seems like I really don't have to reply to the technical aspects of "The Gift's" comments considering the overwhelming majority of other posters agree with my view. We just don't see what you are seeing.
Other than that, telling me to think for myself is just plain pretentious and rude. I'll drink all the Kool-Aid I want and attending the cert in Santa Cruz last weekend has only fueled my passion for Crossfit. Doubters like you are thankfully few and far between where the majority of true Crossfitters are supportive and positive. Look around you, you're on an island by yourself on this one. Video yourself doing Helen, don't even time it, and post it so we can all see what proper technique should look like.
Or go to a cert, you might learn something.
Ray, do you mean Zeitgeist that shares all the conspiracies. 9/11, wars, religion etc.
Yup, they also go out on a limb and explain that earth is populated by 5 species of aliens as well.
You are to good to be true.
Where is my fire hose?
Joey
I don't know if we are talking about the same movie. I don't recall any talk of the world being popualated by 5 species. Infact i have recently seen the movie twice and i'm sure there was no mention of that.
You do have to take things with a grain of salt. And granted i do not believe everything i read or see but there are definitly things that are explained that are not possible. Ask any engineer about building collapse or any physicist about "molten" metal.
There is more to the story and it shold be public knowlage.
Barry Bonds is forced to go before gov't and testify under oath about drugs for personal use yet the president doen't have to swear or be under oathe at the 9-11 inquest and one of his buddies can vet o any question at any time. Somethings backwards here.
the US gov't spends more time trying to catch athletes in lies then there elected politicians.
What fire hose??
Ray, well I guess the engineers at popular mechanics don't count then.
#147 Ray,
They certainly spent a lot of time, money, and energy going after President Clinton when he told that ill-fated lie about Monica Lewinsky. What a threat to national security that was! ;)
I have had video problems recently. Anyone else having the same problem? Heres the error message

RE: Airline Security
Well, the one thing that I do like about the screeners is that they all speak english...think about it, the screeners pre 9/11 usually spoke broken english and had very little training or background checks (remember we trusted our air space to private contractors who paid minimum wage), so that is a change for the positive.
But as one "in the know" I am so happy that we deploy armed Federal Air Marshals on our flights, domestic and abroad. It is a fact that the Air Marshals have the most mandatory training than any other federal agency and the highest weapons qualifications standards, as well. Good for them AND the ones I know are FANATICAL CROSSFITTERS!!!!!!!!
To Ray:
"three small fires", are you kidding me. Last time I checked people don't willingly leap to their death to avoid being burned to death by "three small fires" also why don't you reveal your source about the wire transfer from Pakistan and the goverment breakfast that you purport...did you read that on the internet? Because if it is on the internet it must be right. What a joke. This guy is a government insider and a structural engineer.
