If we can't do BW Bench do we just scale to a weight that we can complete 2-6 reps? I just don't want to go too light and miss the point of this work out.

Thanks,

Comment #36 - Posted by: murph at January 16, 2008 7:17 PM

Well that was as much fun to watch again on video as it was in person. Gotta love the Skynyrd tune, unless you're saying OPT is a simple kind of man!

Oh and there's nothing little about the hill up the OPT driveway, cars get stuck there in the winter snow. They just stay there until the spring thaw so I use 'em like speed bumps.

Comment #37 - Posted by: gaucoin at January 16, 2008 7:18 PM

So OPT just does the WOD and that's it? I'd be really curious to know how much additional work he and the other CF superstars do.

For "Lynne" I think you can rest as long as you want between sets. Go directly from bench press to pullups and after pullups take as much time as you need to recover but not so much time that you cool off.

Comment #38 - Posted by: Redding Mark S. at January 16, 2008 7:18 PM

Great job James!!

OPT...wow...just, wow. 3 sets of goose bumps as I watched along with Lovely Daughter and Mrs. bingo.

"Lynne" (for the love of Gawd, don't forget that 'e').

There is no officially prescribed interval between sets. Some folks storm through and make it a met-con work-out, but the consensus seems to have been that this is actually more of a max effort WOD. Therefore, one rests between sets for 2-3 minutes; long enough to recover but not long enough to cool down or lose intensity. There is NO REST between the bench and the pull-ups, however.

If you can move your BW more than 5 or 6 times go ahead and do this as Rx'd. If not, what's the weight you think you can do 4 times in round 5? Go for that.

No spotter? Got a power bench with safety pegs? How about using the squat rack and setting up the bars just above your chest. Sure, it's not all the way down to your chest, but really, isn't that a little better than 2 inches LOWER than where your chest started? No bench? How about ring PU? It's supposed to be hard.

This is a max effort PU WOD. The kipping PU is the default PU since it will maximize power output. Once you drop off the bar your PU set is done. Give this some thought before you start--you can answer pretty much any pull-up question on your own now.

Sadly, bench is how I trashed my shoulder, so any WOD with bench, dips, or Push-ups is still off limits for me. When I'm the only person in the gym and not doing the posted WOD is the only time I really do feel alone in the gym. Have fun.

3-2-1...Go.

Comment #65 - Posted by: Ronnieb at January 16, 2008 8:37 PM

bingo -

usually spot on, but after exchanging a few e-mails the last time this came up with none other than Lynne Pitts (of "Lynne" fame), i have to make a correction to your WOD description:

since the WOD as posted says absolutely nothing about rest, it is absolutely unnecessary to go directly from benches to the pull-up bar. rest as much as you would like in between both benches and pull-ups AND pull-ups and benches.

as you said, however, this do leave some room for personal preference. some may storm through for time, some may rest for 5 minutes in between each set (which would make this close to an hour in length), and some - like brendan in the posted video for lynne - may choose only to rest after pull-ups. i cannot stress enough, however, that we can each rest as much as we would like.

i have always performed this brendan-style, and last time posted 127 reps. today i will go lynne-style and see what happens.

if you, or anyone else, has any questions, shoot me an e-mail.

one last thing - for purposes of comparison/posting, i suggest that we should all include our rest scheme with our total reps. 150 reps with no rest at all is certainly a different animal than with 3 minutes rest between each set.

Hats off to you, OPT!

Comment #72 - Posted by: Keith W. at January 16, 2008 9:05 PM

Being there was killer, but the video made it even more exciting. Tony B., seriously, your work on the vids is nothing short of inspirational. You are so dialed in right now. Great job by you and all your crew.

I was fortunate enough to stick around Sunday night and listen to a little of OPT's interview. The man is an amazing athlete, and on top of that, one of the most humble, coolest guys you could ever meet.

A little side note: #38 posted: So OPT does the WOD, that's it?

Sometimes, I do the WOD and that's it. I get lazy. I skip my warm up. I skip my skills training. I jump right into a WOD without the proper mindset. I finish and I call it a day. That's why I am a mediocre athlete. My guess is OPT never shows up at his box, does his workout, and calls it a day. I don't know what OPT does besides the WOD, but I've seen first hand his warm-up mindset, and the focus that he brings to the start of his workout. I would bet money that he brings that intensity to EVERY workout. That's what separates the superheroes from the rest of us mere mortals.

James, thanks a ton for enlightening me and getting me on the right track. Mediocre sucks. Those that train with you are some lucky SOB's. Almost makes me wish I lived in Calgary, but it snows there right? .

Comment #73 - Posted by: freddy c._one world at January 16, 2008 9:20 PM

OPT is my (moving) target. did the Filthy Fifty in 21:04 which was a SF Bay Area record by far, but still over 4 min away from OPT time and this is my best WOD! Anytime I can do 75% of OPT effort I feel damn good!

Inspiring video. OPT is definitely a great CF'er. I'm sorry I didn't get to meet James in person when I was at Crossfit Calgary a week ago Monday. If James is anything like his counterpart Brett (AFT), then they have one heck of a class act running the place up there, which I suspect to be 100% true.

CCTJOEY - whatever name you end up giving that puppy, you know for sure you are going to be calling it a little "pood maker" at some point. :)

Just a quick question. For bench press do you find it best to exhale on the press. I was taught when I was younger to "blow the bar up". Is that right?

Comment #81 - Posted by: JakeO at January 16, 2008 10:04 PM

Got a question.

Has anyone here ever gotten any knee tightness that was mild to minimal at first and then moved into not so much pain but over all tightness in the knee area. In the past on my left leg I would notice it being tighter when I would stretch my left quad, not being able to stretch as far as my right quad. Now, since getting back into crossfit for the last month I have noticed my knee getting tighter and the only correlation I could make was with the workouts I am now doing. Prior to this last month of crossfit I was running, cycling or swimming three times a week with just the very mild tightness I would feel if I was stretching. I have improved my rowing technique as I think that may be one of the culprits with me knee but also am thinking it may be to the repetitive squating movements with high repetitions. I have never had any prior history of knee problems so that is why I am posting here to see if anyone else has had any past with this and any wisdom to pass on. For now I know RICE is the best but hardest policy!

Great OPT vid! Very impressive.

I'm frustrated with my workout today. I've been nursing a shoulder injury which seemed to be doing well. BP and high reps of push ups seem to be the things that make it flare up. It actually came on after the last time I did Lynne. I hoped to just scale today since I thought it was on the mend. Wanted to limit the bench to sets of 10 w/ 135#. After a decent warmup to that weight, I felt the shoulder half way through the first set. Shifted to ring dips plus 10 push ups in place of the bench. Those felt OK. Worked on kipping. Can get the basic motion but can't seem to string them together in rhythm.

One of those days.

I love the look that he has as he gets moving...the glazed over...shark eyes look...

Whenever I see that, I know that no one is home in the consciousness...and that one has reached way deep down inside themselves to grab the desirebull by the horns, and wrestle its a$$ to the ground. Obviously OPT has a direct line to that space in him! Frickin awesome!

#28 Hooger
Brother, the WOD makes you wish you lost the 40lbs the doctor asked you too...WELL, YOU'RE IN LUCK, cause this WOD and all the others, done once a day, plus the proper diet is HOW you lose that forty pounds!! The answer to your "problem" is in your statement! Have at it man, go full steam and attack it all! Would have, could have, should have, is completely in futile. The past is exactly where it belongs, IN THE PAST! Grab the horns, wrestle that animal in your head to the ground, and move forward! Today is what we have, TODAY is the gift we are given, START TODAY...1 pound at a time, one rep at a time! 3...2....1....GO!

Quick question, is this BP/PU workout a strength builder or a met-con? I could bump up the weight significantly and still get sets of 5 (reps) to exhaustion, or should I just do the body weight and get very high reps (like 20s). I am an ex-weightlifter in my 2nd week of crossfit.

What is "the OPT" warm-up? I assume it's the standard CF warm-up done at high intensity, but if I'm wrong let me know.

So, I used to think I was good at Helen, especially since I had the advanatge of being a runner coming to crossfit. I was pretty proud when I went sub 10 and even prouder when I went sub 9. It may take a while before I get to sub 8 and I'll still be a minute off OPT's time. Nice.

I'll get to work on it! I would like for it to be May/June when the whether is nice. Are any weekends holidays or any other weekend we shouldn't hold the event? Once we pick a weekend, I'm going to get it set up with the help of Brett and Susie we should be running a great and organized competition!

Anyone interested please send me an e-mail: JasonAckerman246@hotmail.com so I can start putting together a distribution list and figuring out the number of competitors.

Reminder: This is not a qualifier. Anyone and everyone is welcome to participate in the CF games. This is just a fun way to challenge ourselves on the East Coast. If we get enough competitors we will use the winnings to help pay for the winner to head out West for the CF games.

We were doing a really good job of critiquing each other throughout the pullups as we worked on our kip, so the number went up and down. Man, I felt like I had enough strength to keep going on the pullups, but totally lost my grip. To the point that I literally fell off the pullup bar trying to eek out a 20th on my last set. Fell about 5 feet and landed on my hip, so glad tomorrow is a rest day.

I think, I'm doing great...getting tired...better stop or I'll suck in the next round - even though there's a rest.

A truly amazing and inspirational workout from James and put together in a beautiful video by Tony and crew-yes, almost as great as being there!

This is the kind of dedication, inspiration and hard work we get to see everyday at OPT/Crossfit Calgary gym from OPT, AFT, Gaucoin, Intent, OPT Mommy and so many others...but what makes it the best place to be is the support, encouragement and cheering down to the final effort for each and every one of us (average humans) who are 'just out doing our best.'

first, OPT, you are always inspiring and helen is my favorite. i always look for the Calgary regulars postings here, seriously a great group of people!

kelly moore -- bingo beat me to it. you are a beast. well freaking done. (although i wish my BP was only 115 for lynne. even then i still wouldn't come close to your numbers!)

CCTJoey -- Eris, definitely. sorry i missed looking that up.

31/f/161/68"

did the "puppies" scaled version from BrandX. i am still new with incorporating real pullups into my WODs and just switched to on-the-toes pushups, so this WOD seemed perfect for me.
w/u 5' DU work, CFWUx2 (jumping pullups)
5 rounds
pushups 12-7-6-6-7
pullups 3-2-2-2-1

sad little numbers, but i did not rest between rounds. in hindsight, it would have been smarter to rest 2-5'.

post: 10' bike sprints (really pushed hard and almost puked! lol, it wasn't even a WOD.)

I know whatever warm up he does is not the only reason for his elite fitness, but it sure does help, it seems!

Well, I took your advice from the Cert I class Santa Cruz 1/12 and 1/13. I too thought the "zone" or any other diet was not right for me since I was already in good shape, eating healthy, and I felt good. I have been "zoning" now for 4 days and if this workout is any indication of the things to come....Thank you, Jack (shaved head, mustache sportin', secret keepin', Santa Cruz cert I attendee, fireman)

Was really hoping to see an OPT reply to the video...It was nice to figure out that OPT Mommy is his wife. I always thought it was his mom yet she was putting up solid times of her own so I never really got that.

Best Crossfit video so far for sure. When they posted his time the other day I was hoping they were filming. It looked like a fricking movie set out there, must have been a great experience to be at. I hope we get more of those videos of the truly elite performing.

Well done to all.

Rob_ME: that would be AWESOME!
Sparky: Rob, you're a sick, twisted individual. But it would be pretty cool.:)

Down from last time, my chest was shot after doing chest yesterday after the run...I was thinking, nice a short run, I can do some bench and pullups after the run because we hardly ever do WODs with bench...

Great work OPT. I'm pissed I had bounce early and missed the live act.

I'm 6'2" and watching that video inspired me and made me question if that's at all possible for me to accomplish. I'm competitive and can't help to think about how much more work I have to do in comparison to somone 5'7" in most WODs(anything without rowing). So my suggestion for the games is to have height classes for the hopper WODs. CrossFit is all about intensity.(force x distance/time). I think some kind of height class will even things out.

What about a weight class? Weight is managable and can be manipulated, height not so much.

Please post your thoughts.

Took it easy today. Prepping for the cert this weekend!

Today I did 3 rounds of samson stretch, 5 pullups, 10 situps, 10 OHS and then ran ~1mile at a very slow pace to get loose. My hamstrings are so tight/sore they are causing a lot of hip stiffness the last two days.

I can't wait till Saturday!

James,

Congratulations, and thanks for the effort. I'm having a hard time sticking to my guns during my current strength/explosive cycle. "Helen" is calling my name!

Great job. Be proud. Go faster!

Disappointing workout for me, although I matched my total from last time I just lost it after the 2nd set. I got into the gym about 45 minutes late and breakfast wore off, I just felt my energy level plummet and had a hard time recovering. Next time over 100!

On a side note, I need to be my gym for a pull up bar. All these great kipping videos and and can't even practice because of the crappy combo dip, pull up thing we have in my gym. Don't know how much my pull up numbers would go up, but probably at little bit.

Comment #247 - Posted by: Corey at January 17, 2008 10:58 AM

For today's WOD, how much rest should we take in between sets? And should we rest in between exercises as well? Or is this for time, like most of the WOD's?

I'm new, someone throw me a freaking bone here (hahahaha). CrossFit is the poo!

I hear you! I have come to accept that my height and even more so my monkey arms will always keep my rep numbers from being impressive. I just compare what I do in one workout to what I did previously and compete against myself, otherwise I would get pretty discouraged.

It would be interesting to see height categories, sort of like the Clydesdale classes in running/triathlons. I am at about my minimum body weight right now (210) but even that puts my in Clydesdale #2 class. It would just be interesting to see how much of a role height and to a lesser extent weight plays in Crossfit WOD times/reps.

My doc says I need to start using dumbbells so my injured shoulder is forced to do the work instead of my good shoulder carrying the load.

What weight should I press in dumbbells that would be equivalent to a bodyweight bench press with a bar?

Thanks

Been on the shelf all week recovering from shoulder injury and trying not to catch my daughter's cold. Shoulder about 95% now. Anyone else going to the Dallas cert this weekend? Driving up from Houston, hoping to be there in early evening. If anyone would like to grab dinner or anything, drop me a line. Otherwise see you Saturday morning! Can't wait.

#243 Colin, Check out post #43

When there are this many posts this late in the day, EST here in OH, you can most likely count on someone asking and answering all questions regarding the WOD.

To make it faster for you you can use the "CTRL F" feature to search for key words like "rest" in your case, to find the information you are looking for. Since you are new I suggest starting daily with post #1 and skim down through all the post a few times each day. It is a great way to get a feel for other peoples times and other pertinant info regarding the WOD.

Comment #259 - Posted by: Adam W 39/5'7"/171 at January 17, 2008 11:21 AM

One of the best videos on the site by far...
I got completely lost in the moment on that last set of KB swings when everyone was counting out loud. All of a sudden, I was bobbing my head up and down and counting along at my desk (to the confusion of coworkers). Great stuff OPT and Tony B!

OPT or other Calgary members: If you read this, I would really appreciate a brief description of a typical OPT warm up session. I know it's been touched on that they are long, dynamic, and focused on the WOD, but any specifics you could give me for a sample WOD like Fran, Elizabeth, Cindy would be great. Thanks!

Lynne tonight... : )

Yea. I will take your advice, thanks for the hint on the CTRL F idea. And thanks for your answer.

I do like to read all the posts, sometimes my eyes just skip the info i'm searching for.

I know i'm new, but I can already tell this is a cool family to be apart of. I can only hope to meet more people as I continue my workouts. Is there any rough guess as to how many people use the CrossFit training method? Just curious

Take care, and have a great WOD!

Comment #275 - Posted by: canoer_M/31/68"/159 at January 17, 2008 12:08 PM

Austinb, Corey:

I have always been torn on the weight/height catagory issue. Part of me just accepts that I have poor leverages for heavy lifting and a long way to go from a dead hang to chin over the bar. I am certainly not an extreme height/weight at 6'2" 185, but it sure will make a difference.

There are two things to keep in mind. First, remember that crossfit is not an end in itself. For almost any sport I particpate in my height is advantage and that I had to work harder to do the same workout only means that in my fitness APPLICATION I am at an advantage to someone who is 6 inches shorter than me. Now that doesn't solve the CF Games problem so, second, my larger frame means that my high weight totals should be better than someone who is trim enough to do well in pull-ups but only 5'7". I am lifting a lower percentage of my bodyweight in CFT, Dianne, Fran, than someone who is 7 inches shorter than me (unless they are as wide as they are tall in which case they probably aren't stringing together 40 pull-ups).

It's an interesting thought, but I think the disparity is somewhat solved by the fact that if you are taller you can be bigger (though not necessarily) and perform better on fixed wieghts. It's obviously not perfect for the skinny tall guy, but maybe the skinny tall guy (that's me by the way) should get stronger.
