I've been waiting for this wod for quite some time. ;)

I can't wait!!

I know this probably isn't the right place to ask this, but what do you all think of the split snatch, compared to the "regular"?

I believe that tomorrow is my first go at "Mary".

Looking forward to it.

Comment #8 - Posted by: Rajib at January 7, 2008 6:37 PM

I felt it coming too Theresa.. I've been looking forward to it but my hands are such a mess! Gosh Darn It. I guess I'm going to have to push through the pain.

Sniper 64: Infidel6 was right the other day. When I posted on the message board about kipping I got lots of really quality info. It also gave me a little lesson in patience too. :) Give it a shot.

Comment #9 - Posted by: AllisonNYC_23/5'2/118 at January 7, 2008 6:42 PM

this is a question from a crossfit newb, are these wods meant to be the only thing you do a day?

Comment #10 - Posted by: CrossFitnub at January 7, 2008 6:46 PM

Whenever I do front squats, the way I bend my hands back to support the bar is always very painful. My hands just don't want to bend that way. Does anyone else have this problem?

Comment #11 - Posted by: Anthony at January 7, 2008 7:00 PM

#10 .. I think it's fair to say the WOD is the prescribed minimum .. but for other relative newbies like me .. mastering even them is still a distant goal. When you're new the WOD's can look deceptively simple, but when they're done to time, involve gymnastic feats (muscle ups and handstand pushups for eg) you realise how humbling they can be. Also you're quickly realise the limitations of your strength endurance - just try doing 150 burpees and see how long you last. On the flipside, the WOD being the "only thing you do a day" can be incredibly liberating - because it's quick and challenging and you can get about your day, knowing that slowly bu surely you're drastically improving your general physical preparedness for just about any sport or bit of fun or work thrown at you .. enjoy!

I mentioned that the other day b/c the message board is searchable and preserved. Trying to follow a sub-thread when there are 400 posts gets pretty tough too. Obviously off-topic chatter is something we all do, but if it's a good off-topic issue, then yeah, the message board might be the better place to ask. No hard & fast rules really so the poster will have to use his/her judgement.

Hope I didn't come off as rude the other day. It was late & I had to be up at oh-dark-thirty.

Comment #14 - Posted by: InfidelSix at January 7, 2008 7:17 PM

My gym buddy Mike Mc and I just talked about this today. Going to attempt "Mary" for the first time tomorrow. By the way I just pop an blister practicing kipping pull-ups tonight so I think I am going to "self cry myself" tomorrow doing the WOD.

Comment #15 - Posted by: Kim Phan at January 7, 2008 7:20 PM

Hmmmm. I just may need to set aside my other program to take up Cindy. I can handle these numbers, slowly, but those rep numbers I can do.

Comment #16 - Posted by: Bob at January 7, 2008 7:23 PM

I'm new to Crossfit so I hope you'll forgive the dumb question: When squats show up in a workout like this where you're running through cycles of several exercises are they intended to be weighted or body weight?

Comment #17 - Posted by: Pete at January 7, 2008 7:24 PM

#11 Anthony, look at the message boards under FS wrist pain from today. I posted same ? and got awesome advice.
good luck

Comment #18 - Posted by: U'i at January 7, 2008 7:25 PM

What's the best pull-up practice if I can only do one? I don't always have someone around to do assisted pull-ups, so would it be lat-pull downs or the gravitron? I just don't feel like I'm getting any better or closer. I'v done about a million jumping pull-ups too and It doesn't seem like I'm getting closer to real pull-ups. Thoughts?

Comment #19 - Posted by: Spy at January 7, 2008 7:25 PM

Evening.

Cindy and Mary, classic, benchmark CF "Girls". Often the introductory WOD for the newcomer. If you are at all unsure of your fitness, strongly consider "mini-Cindy", 5 PU, 10 Push-ups, 15 squats, # or rounds in 10 (not 20) minutes.

Record what you did, exactly. What kind of pull-ups. What kind of push-ups (and don't call them girl push-ups, there are plenty of girls here likely to kick your results in the butt). What kind of HSPU. Squats are un-weighted, "air" squats.

Yup, that's all there is. If you have enough left over to do any substantial work-out you didn't do your chosen "girl" hard enough. Even the CF monsters generally don't do a second WOD at the same time of the day. Want more work? Go for it (skills, strength, etc.), but beware, this is the second of three days in a row, and Coach knows what you did after the WOD...

It's been a while and time to get back to CF. I haven't done a handstand push up in months, but I'm going to choose Mary anyway. I need the challenge. Plus the one legged squats help my running.

Comment #25 - Posted by: wtp at January 7, 2008 7:39 PM

#11 .. The gravitron is best or assistance bands from iron woody et al ... it's always best to be doing the full motion because lat-pulldowns etc just don't engage the core and back the way pullups do.. i still use assistance bands to avoid injury because the tendons in my elbows take a lot longer to get conditioned than my muscles do ... it takes time but it does happen

Comment #26 - Posted by: bodhikenobi at January 7, 2008 7:42 PM

Spy: The way to get pull-ups is to do pull-ups. . . Lots of pull-ups. Work the negatives. Jump up, hold yourself for a bit then lower yourself slowly. Use a band. Get yourself a pull-up bar at home and do them all the time. Use different grips - wide, narrow, chin up, pull up. Once you have some start mixing it up with kipping, dead hangs, weighted, Ls, I went from 0 to 18 that way.

(You could also go to the squat rack and do bicep curls. Just be careful, the last time I did a bicep curl I pulled a muscle. :)

I6: Not at all. I appreciated the advice and it worked. I got all the information I was looking for on the boards.

AAAhhh, Eric you got me. Did the front squats and Tabata tonight (was joined by a few onlookers to see how they matched up....teehee.....they didn't know what hit 'em)

Anyway,

FS:
1x225, 1x245, 1x265, 1x285, 1x305, 1x315, 1x335, 1x345, 1x355

Tabata:
448 was the overall score. Pullups started strong, but ended numb.

I'll see if the same crew wants to play tomorrow.

Comment #37 - Posted by: Rajun Cajun at January 7, 2008 8:26 PM

Hi Guys-sorry if q is silly-

BlacBoxer here- 38/f/5'5/119

if u can do HSPUs but not full ROM and only against the wall (use one abmat under head) does it make sense to do Mary and work on the HSPUs or instead do Cindy having just finally mastered kipping pullups thus at least Mary will be as rxd (thought it may not be the strongest showing)?

Any advice?
Thanks! This site is awesome!

Comment #38 - Posted by: mishnyc at January 7, 2008 8:29 PM

will attempt mary tomorrow; going to go for unassisted hspu's all the way through.

Oh, and WoooHooo, LSU just won the Championship tonight! The City will probably shut down to party!

Comment #39 - Posted by: Rajun Cajun at January 7, 2008 8:41 PM

I just did 24 sets of "Cindy" with strict pullups, standard pushups, and standard squats within the 20 minutes, and one extra set after the time limit just to round it off to 25.

What about every else?

Comment #40 - Posted by: Louis at January 7, 2008 8:44 PM

Mary? Wow, my first thought was a reflection to the first time I saw Pavel doing single leg squats. Then doing some more. Then some more. Wow. Those single leg squats are well beyond my ability, at present.

I'll be doing Cindy, so I can actually do the WOD. I'll tack on some HSPUs with my post, just to keep improving.

For single leg squats, would you suggest negatives on a box? The floor? Something totally different?

Comment #41 - Posted by: Leslie Ap at January 7, 2008 8:54 PM

For the squats you do alternating one legged squats for a total of 10, so 5 squats for each leg.

Check out the video

Enjoy!

Comment #42 - Posted by: Adam W 39m/5'7/172 at January 7, 2008 9:01 PM

Leslie Ap: You can use a door frame for support to practice pistols.

I'm thinking about trying Mary for the first time. I can do some pistols although I don't know how many after tabata and FS. My new HSPUs need practice too.
Pull-ups are going to kill me either way because of my hands so I might as well practice new skills. I do push-ups and squats everyday.
Yeah. Mary. Eek.

#3 Sniper 64 -

Watch some of the o-lifting demos in the exercises/demos section, you'll see one of the crossfitters doing only split snatch/cleans (rather heavy). The difference is this:

"Regular" (aka squat) snatch is more efficient and generally considered superior, as displayed by a pair of weightlifting brothers.

Split requires more power generation to accelerate the bar to get the height necessary to get under and catch it. But does not require the balance and flexibility of the squat snatch.

Split snatch was the norm for quite some time until Jim and Pete George "convinced" everyone that the squat snatch was superior.

In my opinion, which you choose to do makes little difference. Split snatch is more efficient so for example for Elizabeth, you'll probably have a better time if you can squat snatch. If you can't split snatch is fine too. If you wanted to compete in weightlifting, it'd probably benefit you to learn the squat snatch (and use a much more specific training program).

Mary - 16, 2 more than what I did last time this shows up.

A note for people who might just be getting started. If you get a chance and live close enough try out one of the affiliates. I have been hitting CrossFit Eastside in Redmond, WA once a week for the last month and it is a blast, fun asskicking and great coaching.

#10 - If you do the CrossFit Warm-up at full reps (15) followed by the WOD at full intensity you will be thoroughly taxed. Coach answers that question in his interview here: http://www.crossfit.com/journal/library/05_03_Interview_Glassman.pdf

#39 Louis-

Before you challenge everyone on the site you might want to:

a) Post on a regular basis. Of course, if you did that, you would know that no one ever challenges anyone on this site because there is always someone better, faster, stronger.

b) Do your homework and checkout what some of the monsters here do for Cindy.

Just sayin'..... :-)

Comment #59 - Posted by: Cory Chi-town at January 7, 2008 10:26 PM

Might I ask yet another newbie question? What is the overall goal of CrossFit's workouts?

My goal, for instance, is weight loss/body fat % loss and I want to LOOK and feel leaner/thinner/stronger (think Jennifer Garner in Daredevil or Britney Spears before she became all blown out). I know, sounds silly, but that's my goal.

I don't necessarily want to "bulk up" or look like a body builder. Am I on the right program?? I sure hope so, because it's grown on me ;)

#59 the goal of crossfit is not to improve your look but your functional fitness ... it just so happens that if you're functionally fit enough to complete WODs in good time and you follow the crossfit nutrition prescription you will end up leaner/thinner/stronger .. you should read the latest january journal about the featured crossfit chick .. that should answer your questions and hold any fears at bay .. but don't expect aspirational sentences which include "Britney Spears" in them, to be taken too seriously here .. good luck

When I first read todays WOD my first thought was, "that doesn't look too bad"....
Ha! I was sorely wrong.
Streched, ran 1/2 mile to loosen up sore legs from yesterdays WOD.

0-4:30min 5 intervals :30 sec. rest
(modified pull-ups w/ heals on bench)
(push-ups no problem)
(ball under butt during squats)

5:00-10:30min 4 intervals 1:00 min rest
(gased)

11:30-13:00min 2 intervals 1:00 min rest
(legs like rubber, pain at top of shoulders during push-ups)

14:00-19:30min 3 intervals had to stop
(light headed and dizzy, thought I was going to puke but held it back)(couldn't complete push-ups)

Total=14

"Mary" with a 15' rope climb in place of the 15 pullups (no good reason except that I haven't touched the rope for a while): 13 rounds + 5 HSPUs and 6 pistols. Rope climbs two trips up an eight foot rope using hands only , each trip up started from a seated position on the floor. Hands were getting tired the last couple rounds.

Late from yesterday
Jeff in VA M/48/ 70" /195
CFWU x 1 x 10 (subbed front squats 45 x 10 for OHS)

Front Squats 10 x 1 @ the following weights: 125/135/145/155/165/175/185/195/205/215 (last two were heavy enough for this go around)

Took 2-3 minutes rest between reps.

My target ended up being 15” (2” below my bench) which should have me close to parallel.

Just found a new target for next time that is 12” - that’ll be low enough for me!

John in NY

Allison I am going to piggy back on that statement! I love this topic! So let me give a couple reasons coming from the opposite $ex!

1) It is not 1940, Elvis is dead (not the CF Elvis), and the days of staying home barefoot and preganant are long since over!

2) The womean of today is strong in body, mind, spirit and soul.

3)The woman of today is courageous!

4)Today's woman is more beautiful than ever!
The woman of today takes no bs from the ridiculous statements of "you can't.." from the weak and insecure pawns in society who are disguised as the strong and powerful!

5) Today's woman has earned her train stopping asthetics by sweating, bleeding, swearing,...but never quitting, adding an irreplacable element to her beauty.

Don't know why I like this topic so much, but I dig it!

Love to hear some of your million reasons Allison and others! I get alot from sharing in this belief that I try to pass to my clients who come in initially with...old thinking!

#59 Cassandra, with regard to developing fitness verses bulking up, I would suggest you look at pics of Eva, Nicole, Annie, Jolie, and Allison to judge the effects of extensive use of Crossfit, with reference to the shape you want to develop. When not straining in demonstrating exercises, aren't they pretty well representative of the appearance goal you have? In other words, HOTTIES!

Thank you both for the info! Very helpful!

I agree about the flexiblity up top, and definitly with the low squat, but I would think a split would require more balance. Either way, I can perform the split and can't perform the squat snatch, so I will continue with what I can do, since I won't be competing anytime in the next 60 years or so :)

Yesterday afternoon I broke the ladder going up into our attic and ended up jumping/ falling the last 36 inches and landed badly and twisted my ankle a bit and banged my shin. Once you get one badly sprained ankle it is just a weak spot always looking to turn at the slightest moment, sheesh. I was pretty upset the remainder of the day.

Even though I break and spill things a lot, it is still aggravating every time I do it. As many people have told me, if it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all!

When we went to bed last night, I had a note on my pillow from L (13 YO son). I thought I might share it with you all-

Do not grudge that you are not the Hare

Be thankful that you are the Tortoise and have principles to go by and that you have finished the race

And it matters not what place you finished it, but that you have finished it

And most importantly, remember that others will tell what you have done wrong with no end, but should you look inside you will know that there are those who do not care what you have done, only that they love you for who you are and would stand by until the end because they know you have always, some how clamored back on top and never did any thing less than your best. I Love You Mom.

Have a good day everyone!

Good luck keeping ahead of Belinda. I have found that if you make the other person laugh at some point, it will slow them down a little bit, giving you the advantage to get ahead. ;-)

Instead of straps try chalk. I used to lift with straps and got some great advice from a serious powerlifter. He told me that straps definately put you at a disadvantage and you loose some from what you could have gotten out of the lift. Chalk helps gives you a great grip and you still get the full benefit of the lift. You can find it pretty much anywhere online and its inexpensive. I use it all the time now and find it almost as effective as straps, but my forearm strength has grown considerably more than when using straps.

I tried to email you re: trademark question, but your email bounced... if you see this, and you actually do feel like offering a bit of informal advice (apparently saggy's concern was well-founded, and my little interpretation on the kool-aid guy was enough to trigger cafepress.com to pull my design...), can you email me?
thanks,

Hi all,
Just looking for a little assistance for a friend here. He needs to set up a ring pullup combo in the back yard for one of his clients. $ is not really an issue for his client. Anybody know a good source for this or a crossfit preferred method of construction? Any help is much appreciated!
Just so I'm clear, we're talking about a fixed in the ground deal, for basically just one person at a time, and perhaps with the capability to convert to bar pullups. Thanks again!

Oddly enough, I could not find chalk in any sporting goods store in the Chula Vista area; wound up finding it at REI. Those pesky climbers use chalk quite a bit. If I remember right, I spent about 5 bucks for a brick and a mesh bag full of chalk both go double bagged in my gym bag.

I love Cindy, she messes with your mind. After the first 5 mins. your body tries to convince your mind to stop. After 10 minutes your mind tries to convince your body to stop and after 15 minutes they both see the light at the end of the tunnel and work together to reach the end.

Tuesday, January 8th, 10:30am. Fasted. WOD: "Mary": as many rounds as possible in 20 minutes of 5 handstand pushups, 10 alternating elevated single leg squats, and 15 pullups.

6 complete rounds, completed up to 5 chinups (not jumping) on the 7th round.

Did some light higher rep DB snatches a few minutes after Mary.

Notes: Pullups became chinups midway through second round, and became jumping chinups on the 3rd round.

Mary

5 rounds

This was the first time where I was able to do handstand push-ups touching my head to the ground. The one leg squats were assisted by touching a wall with one hand. First round of pull-ups I did all 15. The following rounds of pull-ups were broken but I did not less than 10 on each round.

I have found that doing full range on my exercises for either Cindy or Mary has really decreased the amount of rounds I am able to do. I have also found that because of the full range of motion I fell a lot stronger.

Oh, and by the way, I'm not really worried about Belinda passing me by on Cindy (it's just a matter of when). The competition is just for fun. She has beaten my times before on WODs like Filthy Fifty and others. I'm really proud as punch of her. She couldn't do any pullups at all and maybe just 5 pushups when we started Crossfit. Now she gets 20 rounds of Cindy. J roCk is right, Crossfit women are the tops.

I didn't think it was possible either until I saw it. He just keeps going and doesn't rest, it's amazing. 170 pull-ups, 340 push-ups, and 510 squats in 20 minutes. That dude is a beast.

Pull-ups were much better. In order to get the kipping rhythm I had to tap my toes on the ground every rep or two, otherwise I get swinging out of control. :-)

Gabrial #165

It can be done. I've managed 27 (I think I put 25 in Logs it All from my last attempt) and see people with better form than me make it to 30. 34 is hard but not out of the questen. I think Greg A was on pace doing 16 in 10 minutes. Granted he was smoked after 10 min and probably wouldn't have kept that pace, but he is a big dude. Take some of our smaller crossfitters who dominate the body weight movements and I'll bet you could get 34.

I seem to recall hearing Jerry Hill down in Alexandria's own Crossfit Challange does pretty well at Cindy.

i missed yesterday due to a mild stomach thing, but i had planned on doing "sprint" from LiveLong CF (WOD 1/3/08, i think.) it was something similar, but i wanted the cardio to burn off the christmas flub!

"sprint"
20 back squat (rx'd 135 women, but i subbed 85#)

"mini-cindy" 10' AMRAP
5 pullups (sub jumping, but lowered box -- very little jump!)
10 pushups (on toes)
15 squats to med ball
4 rounds -- made sweat angel #2

SERIOUSLY fighting off pukie whole last round. wanted 5 rounds, but wouldn't let myself "cheat" on knees for pushups, so they ate up time.

i feel awesome. first real double workout. the first one is a great mix of exercises. i experienced what Andy mentioned in the videos -- how it messes with your nervous system going from heavier lifts to functional, fast cardio. i kept saying to myself, if you train this right, you won't get hurt. means a lot to an athletic trainer. also, i have squat form issues, so while i could have gone heavier, as i fatigue it was very evident that i picked the proper weight. perfect amount of struggle.

thanks for the ramble, guys!

Cassandra,

"CrossFit is a Strength and Conditioning Program..." The goal of CrossFit is to produce General Physical Preparedness (GPP), ie Fitness. To make sure you can handle lifes challenges, foreseen and unforeseen, large and small, heroic and everyday for the rest of your life. It's great for women, childen, men, young, old, etc.

I'd strongly recommend the Starting page where you can check out some of the summaries of the program by Coach. CrossFit develops conditioning in the 10 general areas of fitness by using Functional movements combined in varied if not random ways performed at high intensity.

You're alread hooked, so you'll soon see the results you want. Make sure you include the dietary side of the equation, because to see all the feminine muscle structure you're developing, body fat will play a part. It's really about being functional and healthy. Form follows function.

:)

Couldn't think of a good warmup, so I did some jump rope and a few situps and back extentions. That's really all that's left of the CFWU if you take out the squats, dips and pullups :) Anyone have any better ideas?

Cindy as Rx'd:
9 rounds

Big day. My goal was 10, but I resolved not to cheat (all pullups real, no knee pushups, etc.) so I was down to singles on the pullups by round 7. Last time Cindy came up, and I quote :)
"7 rounds, 5 neg pullups. had to go to knee pushups for the last set, negs on the pullups after two sets"

So from 10 pullups to 45, and from 60 pushps to 90. Yeah baby. Also, since I was so close, I went ahead and did one more round to make it 10. Next time, next time.

I did Cindy today and totally lost count of my rounds! I was too busy running from one corner of the gym to do assissted pull-ups, then to the other to do my push-ups and squats.

After about round 6 I finally dragged a mat over by the gravitron machine and took up all the space around me. Oh well. I got some funny looks today and I just smiled.

Crossfit rules!

It's funny how just the motion of raising your arms during air squats makes your shoulders scream after awhile. Who would've thought.

AllisonNYC and others with hand issues: after my first time with 30 bar muscleups, I tore 3 huge callouses off my hands and a bunch of other skin as well. There was a link posted about a year ago on hand taping that kept me going. I can't find it now, but basically, you need some name-brand athletic tape from your local drug store. Basically, you take a few half strips of tape about 8 inches long and loop them behind your middle and ring fingers so the ends meet at your wrist. Overlap the strips a bit so that your bad areas are covered. Then, tape around your wrist a few times to hold the tape strips in place. I hope that makes sense...you should be good to go!

kipping pullups (divided into 3/2 on the last few rounds)
full-length pushups (started off with 10s, went to 5/5, then 5/3/2, then 3/3/2/2 for the last few rounds)
Air squats to a 13" platform (missed touching down a few times, but hit it about 95%)

Cindy:

23 Rounds as Rx'd.

This 4 off my best, but I blame a few different things, some of which have been mentioned today. I have had to re-baseline all of my times in workouts that involve push-ups ever since we got the push-up tutorial on the website last year. It's not that my push-ups were bad. They were better than you would see on your average military PFT, but unless one really consentrates it is really easy not go all the way to the deck, and even easier to now lock out at the top. It slows you down. No doubt.

Second, it was 70 degrees in Washington DC today and if you think I didn't spend 40 minutes running around outside the windowless pentagon, you're crazy.

Third, how does coach always know that I felt like a little extra work yesterday and did a few rounds of Barbara? Scary.

My fist "Cindy"- 19 rounds! Surprised the bageezus out of myself. Got a nice burst of energy after 15. Also got to initiate my superfly, ghettofied rings that I made last night. They're not pretty but they work great. Hoping to get a muscle up soon.

I was wondering does anyone have any suggestions for running. One of our officers is taking us on a run tomarrow for pt. Hes is a runner and so it is going to be a long on for sure. My problem is I can keep going but I cant keep the pace with the section. Anyone have any ideas with what I can do to improve on this?

Was going to do Mary today for a change, but my Globo-gym has mirrors plastered on every square inch of wall space near the pull up bars & I didn't want to take a chance of breaking a mirror with my heel doing the hspu's so I did Cindy instead.

Last time - Nov. 9, 2007

21 rounds + 5 pull ups + 9 push ups

Today:

24 rounds + 5 pull ups + 10 push ups + 5 squats

#355 Elspeth - I am not much of a runner so there's probably some better advice out there, but the only advice I can give you is to keep a high cadence. I used to try to run with a long stride (heel-toe, heel-toe) which beat me up pretty good. The recent talk on the Crossfit site about Pose running or Chi running (Google both topics to find a wealth of info) promotes a short stride (running on the middle & balls of your feet) with a high cadence. It's all about reducing the perceived effort level while maintaining proper form with good speed. Then there's that other thing - practice.

My first time with Mary.

As Rx'd

Did HSPUs with head to abmat - probably do without the abmat next time.
I hung the smallest woody band from my pullup bar to 'assist' in the pistols, but I found I didn't rely on it much, just helped to balance.
The pullups went very well, but I could feel a new blister form by the 4th round which did tear, even though I was trying different grips and trying to be careful. I had some headaches come on during the 2nd round, but I was able to keep a slow pace and keep going.

Mary - 8 Rounds + 5 HSPU + 10 Pistols + 1 torn blister.

Unable to do Cindy today because of massive soreness from the tabata. I will, however, make her up as soon as I can actually lift something heavier than my water bottle. Seriously.

I ran two miles instead in 20:10.

Oh, and good news on the home front: Since starting CrossFit about two weeks ago, I've dropped a dadgum 3% on my body fat percentage! How awesome is that?!

I am about 90% better. I was all pumped to go to the gym and all energetic, but it fades fast and I get all weak feeling. A few more nights of good sleep and I should be good.

I REALLY wanted to do better than last time. Last time I PR’d with 140. I made up all the failed attempts and then tried ONE More time – and got 145. I will attack this one again when I have some more energy and WILL get more 

new pb of 22 rds plus 5 chin ups. transistion time much better but still could have shaved off a few seconds as the time went on. Push ups stayed 10 straight thru to about round 7 which was better. We have a top 5 list for every WOD the list goes OPT,AFT,Rob C,Gaucoin and then a young (18y/o) hockey player who got 22 plus 5 chins last summer. I vowed to get him off the board someday and thought today was the one but it's a draw. Not bad since he is 18 and I'm 46

1st time doing this. Not very pleased with myself. Pull-ups are my nemesis. Did all from a dead hang but could only do 1 at the time with couple of seconds of rest in between towards the end. Concentrated on perfect form on push ups and squats. Broke down maybe 4 sets out of 19 with a short 3 second break. The rest was unbroken with good form. Squats down to butt 12” from ground with good form. Small 1-2 second breaks here and there. Should be able to get push ups into unbroken sets quite quickly. Squats ok, but I need a lot of work on the pull ups.

Today I did this one a little different than usual. I started each round on the minute so that I went at a pace of 1 round per minute. I usually had about 26 seconds of rest each round including the last. Next time I plan on doing the same, but quickening the pace in the last 5 rounds to see if I can pump out 2-3 extra. My usual routine is to start fast paced and then slow down.

17 rounds* w/ 15lb weight vest on.

I was trying to to one round per minute so I'm not sure If I didn't keep track of the number of rounds correctly or I buggered up the time management. I was fiddling with the vest in the beginning so I may have not marked a round or two.

Oh... she's catching me, she's catching me. But, Wow, a year ago (070106) Belinda did her first Cindy with all bw pullups and scored 12 rounds

Complete as many rounds in 20 minutes as you can of:
5 Pull-ups
10 Push-ups
15 Squats

11 rounds plus 5 pullups. My best is 12 rounds, but this is my first time with stopwatch. And I might have lost track of a round, not sure.

Comment #557 - Posted by: blades at January 8, 2008 7:11 PM

Forgot to mention: last time doing this wod, got 8 almost 9 rounds so 13+ is a HUGE improvement. (I guess in a couple months) Crossfit rules.

Comment #558 - Posted by: Shana A. in ATL at January 8, 2008 7:14 PM

Terrible day.
5 rounds with 23# vest in 5 min.

Lungs seized on me. Felt a little wheezy warming up jumping rope, but thought it would pass, it didn't. Oh well, next time (last time 15 in vest).

Last time: 13 rounds with 70lbs assisted on pull-ups and push-ups on knees.

This time: 13 rounds jumping pull-ups, full push ups.

Heather: 12 rounds; 2 jumping pull-ups, then 70lb assisted, 6 rounds full-push-ups - the rest on knees.

Had first run in with people not happy with my workout - the pullup bar is inbetween cable pulls and i had three people stop and ask me if i was done - i could barely breath - but had to stop and tell them how many minutes i had left - then one guy stayed and kept asking if i was alright --- i want to scream - but didn't.

Thanks Coach and family!

BrandX scaled wod - Puppies
Complete as many rounds in 12 min.
3 Pull-ups
4 Push-ups
7 Squats

Completed 7 rounds! FYI - even with scaled wod's, these workouts are leaving me completely spent. I love it. My arm's are still shaky and my upper back is starting to talk to me.

Using Gravitron @ 80# - I use 110# for the CFWU so this was a big improvement - 3 weeks ago I couldn't make the Gravitron budge at 100#.

1st round of push-ups - strict, next 6 were box push-ups with shaking arms.

CFWU (minus pull-ups)

Cindy as rx'd: 14 rounds. All pull-ups were done "to standard" either kipping or straight arm hang, i.e. no jumping pull-ups. Sets 5 and on were broken on pull-ups.

Compare to 9 NOV 07: 12 sets, sets 3-12 most pull-ups were jumping.

Improvement!!

Just started Cross Fit last week to try and bulk up. Got tired of being the "skinny kid". Feeling really good after workouts (soreness that I never felt after regular workouts).

First time doing a workout like this. Lets just say people weren't kidding about having to have a bucket handy. I had to run to the washroom after about 9 sets.

9 sets in 14 minutes.

I happened on a short bio of Jack "Juiceman" Lalane in the Coscto magazine. Good read (accessible at the bottom of costco.com). At age 42 he set the record for doing 1,033 pushups in 23 minutes (sounds like an up-coming WOD) and at 45 he did 1,000 push ups and 1,000 chin ups in 1hr 22min. I wonder if Greg Amundsen could (or has) beat those numbers?

I can't believe it either!
I started the Zone on November 16th weighing in at what I thought was a slight 165 lbs standing a mere 5ft 5in tall. I'm meticulous about my food blox and in 54 days I have lost exactly 20 lbs. I didnt even think I would be AOx3 losing that much weight. 4 block meals 2 block snacks. Perfect 98 percent of the time with about a 2 percent margin for error when eating at the station. I dont know what my body fat percentage is but my workouts are still getting better and Im stronger than I have been since probably my days in Camp Schwaab or Somolia

Happy with my second Cindy. Cindy was my very first ever CrossFit WOD exactly two months ago. I can't believe the improvement. I think I could have maybe squeezed out 2 or 3 more but I played hockey for an hour and a half, then did Cindy. was on pace at round 12 for one round per minute, then got gassed, oh well leaves room for improvement next time.

[tried to post this last night...don't know what happened...]

holy crap you people are inspiring (as usual).

F/27/5'7"/140lbs

Cindy = 8 rounds

Same as last time, but at least this time:
* Only last 3 rounds assisted pullups, whereas last time all were assisted. 2/3 of the rest of the pullups were still jumping, but still an improvement!
* All pushups were standards, whereas last time at least half were on my knees.

Thanks for giving me something to aspire to, folks! ;)

Usually I do either a Mary or a Cindy but this time I wanted to do a little of everything, so I started with 5 rounds of: (about 7 minutes)
5 HSPU, 10 L-Pullups (strict), 15 walking lunges
and then followed with a fast 5 rounds of CINDY:(about 4 minutes)
5 pullups, 10 pushups, 15 squats
and then did 2 rounds of Mary:(about 4:30)
5 HSPU, 10 alt. single leg pistols, 15 pullups
(I figured that this gave me over 100 pullups and a good range of moves all with good fast paced intensity.
Next time I'll get back to a strict Mary and a strict Cindy. My goal next time is to get 28 rounds for Cindy.

Cindy 15 rounds, but I'm still weak at pull-ups so... First 5 were 25# assist with the gravitron, 2nd 5 were with 40# assist, and last 5 were with 65# assist, and they all hurt! Squats were killer after the 10 1RM of front squats yesterday too. I'm gonna sleep well tonight.

After 2 days of tabata sprints after the holidays, I started easing my way back into crossfit yesterday with Cindy. I opted for 10 minutes instead. This was followed by 10 4-count leg-lifts, flutter kicks, and hello-dollies. I hate looking this bad. I need to slim up for my $1k dress blues that I'm wearing for my commission in May!

Pfft, Cindy looked easy (well, 1 round looked easy). So we decided to try Mary, as the HSPU were brand new and it's been a long time since we tried pistols. Didn't even complete one round, since we realized early on we sucked. So we made it a technical day and worked technique instead.

Hey Dutch, someone posted a comment on youtube about you only doing 4 pull ups each round on the Cindy video. So I took a closer look. It really does look like there weren't full sets going on. Not trying to rip on a great performance but, the video is a little suspect. Could you slow the video speed down a little. Thanks, and by the way good job regardless, because I know you still got a good work out.

"mary" was modified thanks to my carelessness. I ended up doing 5 HSPU's, 20 1-legged squats (10 each side), and 15 pull-ups). The results have been greatly altered because of this, not to mention the state in which my legs will be later. I am glad to report that all pull-ups were regular, though they had to be broken down into subsets totaling 15. I'm on my way!

ahhh the double under....couldn't even get one for a while then I couldn't get 2 in a row...now I can get about 10 with out meesing up!
When I teach it I teach that your arm/hands have to stay VERY close to your body. Get into a good one jump rythme without even THINKING about a double under. Then when you have decided you are posed ...it is ALL timing. The exact second I kick my knees up higher on my jump is that same instance I turn my wrists more rapidly.
Really is is ALL technique and once you get it you will always have it!
OH and after a WOD like Cindy tomorrow try to get a few DUs in right after...when your legs are ROCKS it makes them more challenging and a better way to learn! Have fun!

is it recommended to split the workout, in other words can you do ten minutes of cindy and ten minutes of mary, for a total of twenty minutes.

WU: 3 trail laps with the dog, time: 30 min

Doubled up today, CFT + Cindy. Big improvements!

Squat: 250 lbs (pr by 10)
Press: 117.5 lbs (pr by 2.5)
Dead: 295 lbs (pr by 5)

CFT: 662.5! About 4.9x BW

Cindy: 20 Rounds (pr)

Last time, 17 rounds and change. Last time I rocked through about 12 rounds in 9 minutes and then just hit a wall... this time I paced at 0:55 per round in the beginning. By about round 14 I couldn't maintain that pace anymore and just kept a steady pace with 5-10 seconds rest each round... huge difference, especially on pushups. Only had to break up the last 4-5 sets vs. 9-10. Lesson learned! Next time, need to try Mary.

Complete as many rounds in 20 minutes as you can of:
5 Pull-ups
10 Push-ups
15 Squats

12 rounds, ties my best. Pushups are still the sticking point. Next time, I won't pause before pushups. Had a little pain in left middle finger after this one. Suggs to get old.

Complete as many rounds in 20 minutes as you can of:
5 Pull-ups
10 Push-ups
15 Squats

12 rounds plus 5 pullups and 10 pushups. My previous best is 12 rounds. I did use "kipping pushups" to try to keep motoring when I started to fail on strict PUs. Reason is that kipping really helped me with reagrd to pullups, just as CF advertised. I found kipping the pushup does allow me some more reps and quicker recovery, but are still not easy when arms start to give out.

Comment #893 - Posted by: blades at March 7, 2008 8:13 AM

16 complete rounds

Pull ups were dead hangs and jumping. Push ups were RLS due to wrist pain (improved w/ brace)
