This would be a good one for:
- a high school PE class
- travel or home workout (as long as you have a place to do pull ups)

Ive been waitin for Barbra for a while now. Finally I get my belated christmas gift.

I created a work out today after the CFT. I need some help naming it. Any names anyone?

21 Manmakers/ 30 lb. DB
21 pullups
100 Jumprope
15 Manmaker/ 30 lb. DB
15 pullups
100 Jumprope
9 Manmakers/ 30 lb. DB

As rx'd: 14:40

It kicked my butt. I encourage anyone else to try.

Comment #16 - Posted by: Patrick M at December 26, 2007 6:55 PM

Greg & Judd, one word, Amazing.

I will be doing Barbara but will have to sub the 50 squats with 25 left leg assisted squats by holding onto sides of my squat rack. All because of this DAMN LEG CAST!

Comment #17 - Posted by: Adam W 39/5'7"/178 at December 26, 2007 6:56 PM

* Barbara, sorry for the spelling

Comment #18 - Posted by: Patrick M at December 26, 2007 6:58 PM

Ooo I haven't seen Barbara since I started. I was going to try it on my own if it didn't come up. I think the squats are going to be a problem for me tomorrow.

My CrossFit Total was a TOTAL disaster. I had to stop before I started. On my warm up set for the squats with 135 my hip flexor cramped up so much and hur really bad. Every time I tried to get out of the squat it pinched again. Keith W tried to help me streth it out but that killed me too. It's been bothering me a little but nothing like this. It even hurt in the DLs. So I stopped that too because I didn't want to make it worse and just didn't feel like feeling the pain.

What the heck should I do? Just stretch? I've been doing the SS streth but it's obviously not enough. It's just my left hip and it's kind of in my lower back too. Will a massage help?

Comment #19 - Posted by: AllisonNYC_23/5'2/118 at December 26, 2007 7:00 PM

I have tooken a full week off after my diagnostic angio gram this will be my first workout. Hopefully it goes well I may have to take out the situps.

Question about timing of Barbara...is each round timed individually or is the entire workout timed?

Comment #22 - Posted by: Sean at December 26, 2007 7:08 PM

Happy day after Christmas to all! I am guessing that the squats are using bodyweight only?

Maybe I should have phrased that as "I am hoping..."? :-)

Comment #23 - Posted by: Brian at December 26, 2007 7:31 PM

Yikes! Who said Thursday was going to suck....

Brian, yes squats are body weight. good luck!

Comment #24 - Posted by: Matt S. at December 26, 2007 7:37 PM

Sean I read it as time each round individually and post each round's time, not the total 5 round time only.

Barbara as Rx'd...love this workout
3:18, 3:49, 3:29, 3:37, 3:29

Did my situps on a bed of ice and my pushups in a foot of snow. On the fifth round, it started to sleet hard!

I've been doing CF for a few months now, but only the bodyweight WODs because of lack of equip. Yesterday did my first Fran at 85#...barely completed it, time 15:22. Terrible, I know, but I'd never done a thruster in my life before that. I loved it though; it was the most painful 15 minutes ever.

Comment #28 - Posted by: Shane S at December 26, 2007 7:59 PM

There is NO WAY that I will be able to do pushups tomorrow in Barbara. After the Bench Presses on the 23rd, and the Burpees on the 24th, my chest and shoulders are so incredibly sore that doing pushups is most certainly asking for severe muscle strain or possibly an injury. Any suggestions for what I could sub in? I don't like to sub if I don't have to, but like I said I pretty much have to. Thanks!

Comment #29 - Posted by: Rob Sheldon at December 26, 2007 8:01 PM

WOD demo video is awesome. Would the snatches be considered swing snatches, power snatches, or what?

On Joshie (071222), it says to do squat snatches not power snatches, but that's with dumbbells.

Thanks.

AllisonNYC either a massage or see an ART person (active release technique) they can do some specialized pressure-point work that may help to release whatever's binding your flexors up.
Awesome pix of you & SpideyChick (she's da bomb... every time I think of her Murph time I just shake my head in awe lol)

1st time for Barbara. Can't wait. Almost seems like cake compared to Fran, Badger & Joshie in the same week hehe.

32/m/215/6'5"

Press - 165
Squat - 345
Dead - 385

CFT - 895

This really surprised me after hurting shoulder on Fran and taking the last 3 workouts off. I took it easy on the press since left shoulder is still hurting on that motion. I went really slow and still was able to get 165 up, which is 10 less than last time. Legs felt really good, like they were fully rested for the first time in a long time, squat was up 30 lbs. Worked up to 385 on deadlift and called it a day, had I realized I was so close to 900 I would have added the 5 lbs. to get it.

Comment #36 - Posted by: GMT-NYC at December 26, 2007 9:48 PM

Allison NYC,
Massage and ART are awesome, but in the meantime get a tennis ball or lacrosse ball. Lay on your stomach and put the ball under your hip flexor. So your laying on the ball kinda. You can do this with your back, legs, feet.. It's a dancer thing works wonders.

Comment #37 - Posted by: Denver at December 26, 2007 9:48 PM

did Total (680) this morning at 5:30, one of my buddies couldn't make it so he talked me into doing barbara about an hour ago. Not sure that was a good idea, but hey Alpha Breed mentality talks us into stupid things.

our times as perscribed:

Mike

Age: 21

BW/H: 190ish 5'10

3:33/2:59/3:04/3:05/2:55

Me

Age:22

BW/H: 142, 5'10

2:53/2:32/2:45/2:15/2:34

Doing the math thats a little less than one rep a second for most rounds, and more than one rep a second on the 4th round. I would never have imagined that possible before Cfit.

Mike has been crossfitting in a somewhat erratic fashion for 6 months, his times are incredible. he posted 5:35 Fran on his second ever attempt. A testament to the belief that guys with a strength background can be dominant rather quickly. He has never totaled, but i can see 400 pound deadlifts in the very near future.

Re: Hip flexor problems

I can throw out another recommendation for hip flexor problems. Hopefully it will help.

Try stretching all the muscles in your hip area every day. In addition to the Samson stretch, I specifically stretch the following during each round of my Crossfit warmup: hamstrings, quadriceps, and glutes. For hamstrings, I actually do 3 variations each round. After dealing with chronic hip flexor injuries for several years, a therapist suggested that the other muscles in my hip area were so tight they might be putting undue strain on my hip flexors. I can't speak to the accuracy of her diagnosis, or whether the stretching is even what fixed things, but I haven't had any major hip flexor problems since I started doing this a couple years ago.

BW bench press, 30 reps

nadia: BP: 85#

eric: 34/m/139

BP: 135

rep 30 of round 2 i completely failed. the bar was on my chest i could not sit up and could not dump. just had to lay there for 2 min while eric finished up his last 500m row and then saw me lying there stuck. ha. never have had that happen before. i think my chest will be sore tomorrow. ken you will be happy to know i had a grey goose martini (extra dirty) tonight at the bar downstairs, and two mini veggie burgers. :-)

That workout was brutal.
I had question about the video today. They're dumbell snatches look nothing like the ones they show in the exercise demo. I could've done this in half the time if I did them like that. I guess maybe one is a squat snatch and one is a power snatch. Which one is which?

Peh, hip flexor cramping.

The solution is simple and it doesn't have to do with ART or stretching.

Remember when you starting working L-sits and your quads and hip flexors were cramping up? Same thing. When you hit the bottom portion of the squat, the hip flexors activate against the hamstrings to keep the pelvis anterior rotated so that the lumbar spine is upright. At this point since the insertion of the hip flexors on the femur are close to the pelvis and lumbar spine where the hip flexors originate, the muscle is contracted at basically it's shortest position. This leads to cramping as you can attest with L-sits with the quads/hip flexors or V-sits with the abs and other exercises that require very tight contractions.

So the answer is to basically do weighted squats more so that the cramping goes away. Start with fairly light weights to allow your hip flexors get used to a light load and then build up from there. As you probably noticed, CF doesn't incorporate a lot of weighted barbell work for squats because of the metabolic work that airsquats can give in conjunction with other exercises, so you'll have to do a little specific work on your own.

P.S. And no, CFT, full squat clean oly lifts and the occasional 1-1-1/3-3-3/5-5-5 squat don't really count cause you'd get maybe one every week or two at most.

Comment #44 - Posted by: steve low at December 27, 2007 12:22 AM

Looking forward to this. I need to make up the burpees, total AND this one. HOlidays are tough.

I did 90 pullups and 90 dips for time (pull ups were all dead hang)

Did the "cindy"-ish workout before where you do 5 pull ups, 10 pushups, 15 squats each minute on the minute for 20 minutes before that.

Comment #45 - Posted by: Ropo at December 27, 2007 12:48 AM

Wod #7 (I still owe a crossfit Total)

Warm Up - skill practice of the WOD excercises

WOD - 1/2 Barbara

5 Rounds
Pull Ups x 10 (hang as many as poss, then Jump)
Push Ups x 15
Sit Ups x 20
Squat x 25

Round 1 = 0.00 - 1.33 Round 2 = 3.00 - 4.37
Round 3 = 6.00 - 7.27 Round 4 = 9.00 - 11.02
Round 5 = 12.30 - 14.53

I tried to 1/2 the rest period as I was scaleing down the work by half. I think 3/4 might have been a better representation if my current level, will find out next time. Pull ups and Squats are still the limiter at this stage.

Thanks Kath, Denver and JP22. It's 6am here and I've been up for over an hour bacause I can't get comfortable. I woke up wrapped up like a mummy because I was tossing and turning so much. I'm took excedrin and I'm trying to lay in a positing that stretches my hip out.

I tried rolling on a ball and it hurt like crazy. Geeze. I also tried a few air squats and it's just not good at all when I get to the bottom. I think I Need a massage.

I'm not a happy camper. Will ice or heat help? I think I may have to do Barbara without the squats tomorrow

Allison,

Sounds like you're having some serious psoas issues. The remedies posted so far are great for short term relief. However, if you want to get to the cause of this problem some more intensive therapy may be required. I practice and recommend a form of therapy called Myofascial Release. It is an awesome form of soft tissue therapy designed for long term results. You can learn more at myofascialrelease.com. There is a practitioner in your area. Her name is Debra Abramson. You can locate her at abramsonPT.com. Hope this helps.

I subbed 100 revolutions on a stationary bike for the squats because my knees told me to. When I was interviewed at the Toronto cert, I said Murph was the hardest WOD. I take that back. Last time I did Barbara, a year ago, I didn't finish. This time I finished but it was a near death experience.

A.R.T. or Active Release Therapy (same as myofacialrelease) is incredibly effective for all the aches and pains caused by people who train intensively. I swear by it.It's painful when being done but the results are well worth it.If you want to continue doing Crossfit at an intense level especially as you get older put an ART practitioner on your payroll.

1st ever "true" Crossfit WOD.

Subbed 10 pull ups instead of 20. Forgot to do squats on the first round. Stopped after third round becuase I was about to puke. My ass is spent and I cant wait for tomorrow.

Holy CRAP!
I'm trying to remember why I decided to make my pull-up bars with a 1 1/2 inch bar ...? Did better than last time, all pu's kipping with first two sets uniterrupted. Push ups weren't "perfect" but at least to 90. Almost met pukie after the third round, enough to go into the kitchen and get my trash can. I tip my hat to everyone who averaged 3 min or less per round.

5:01/6:18/6:51/7:48/7:24

I don't know what kinda drugs most of you people are taking to get an average under 5 minutes! After the first round, the pushups and situps were severely broken up. Why do they suck so bad? The air squats, however, were my saving grace. I think I was able to get all 50 unbroken on the first round, then to 40 on two more of the rounds. They were fast too.

Nice job today Kim Phan - glad you got to meet Pukie today, but I just missed him!

I did the sit-ups on the GHD. Full range of motion on pulls and pushes. I also did my squats without a med ball so I could squat deeper (and not get that little trampoline cheat). Wow, what a difference!

Exactly 3 min between rounds, except between round 3 and 4, at which time I took an extra 27 seconds to puke. My time picked up after that :-)

Alli NYC, just leave it alone. Sounds like your body is telling you something, REST. You could have pulled something, torn it, sprained it, etc. Ice a few days and see what gives. Start back at reduced weights and reps and gradually go back into it. So what if you have to take a step back, how many steps have you taken forward (I assume a lot by now)?

So, take it easy. I'll have to plan to be up at black box some day in 2008 to play with you all. Perhaps next Christmas/New Year's season.

Awesome Vid. Doing a workout with Greg A. is on my 'to do' list.

Came very close to quitting on round 3. I was in a cold sweat from round 3 on and almost met the infamous pukie today, almost. I'm still shaking from this one, and it's nearly an hour later.

Embarrassing time, but what the hell here goes:

1 - 4:59

3 - 9:10
4 - 9:34
5 - 8:45

It looks like this will be about the worst total time. No doubt about it, being a long legged, long armed, monkey boy who still has some weight, I suck at body weight exercises. This workout was excruciating and the hardest I have done in 9 months of Crossfit. I was seeing pukie after the 1st set and he didn't go away until 15 minutes after I stopped. Extremely humbling workout.

Did barbara for the 1st time. Got a call in the middle of the 1st round, and just stopped the clock and continued when I got back. I gave myself only a 1 min rest after I finshed the first round because of the call. I still don't have the kipping rhythm down yet, so my pull ups are strict. I hit the wall in the 4th round and it took me 2 minutes in round 4 + 5 to get the pull ups done.

Hey ken c.!

I got an email from poi dog today. He's officially in our "40+ Support Group"!

Yes I puked today. Second time in two weeks. Kinda wierd as I wasn't clocking in any world class times today. I fear I have unlocked my "puke switch." Great!

About the medball, I never considered it a cheat, but I tell ya, it was a lot harder going deeper and not bouncing off that ball, which is something I tend to do as I get fatigued.

AllisonNYC...I have a similiar problem with my left hip flexor. I can't say rest was particularly helpful (it is most bothersome when I wake up) or different types of massages (but who doesn't like a massage anyway regardless of pain level). Stretching consistently produced the best results for me, by far. During my CFWU, I include a twisting lunge, pidgeon pose, and cobra pose. I found them in the October issue of Men's Journal, whose fitness articles I generally ignore, although they did feature an article about the Glassman's and Crossfit once.

Good luck

Comment #164 - Posted by: gmoni at December 27, 2007 12:20 PM

AllisonNYC

Try this stretch as is should hit the spot!!!!

Lie on your back and cross your right ankle at your left knee as if you were going to do a glutes stretch. Bring your left knee up so the thigh is at 90 degrees to the torso and then keeping your shoulders flat on the floor rotate your legs over to the right side and you should feel the stretch in the left hip.

Took me about 2 months to totally get rid of it, but I didn't have to stop training during the treatment from my oesto. Massage, ultra sound, accupunture and stretching sorted it out.

Thanks for all of the advice on my tight hip. You guys are so helpful. I'm going to take the day off but I'm not happy about it. I feel so heavy and slow and I know the rest of my body needs to move. It seems like everyone is saying I need to get an ART massage. It sounds painful but it can't be worse than this annoying feeling that won't go away.

Gina: He couldn't be any cuter. I think he's the best thing on the planet. I've been on his sh!t list for the last few days and it's breaking my heart. I don't know what I did. I have to go to the gym tonight to pick up a bag of Thomas the Tank and Friends trains for him from another Black Boxer. Maybe that will get me back on his god side. I'll have to wear jeans because if I wear LuLuLemon pants I'll be too tempted and I'll probably end up training.

Melissa:: I can't wait to meet you too. I just started saying I don't love running instead of saying I hate running. I really hope it becomes more enjoyable after the weekend. I'm really looking forward to it. The bonus is that Eva is going to be there..

John Wopat: Thanks for the kind words the other day. :)

BoB and Brian- you guys are funny. I'll keep em coming for you.

One more thing: I got my First CrossFit Certificate in the mail today. I'm going to frame it and hang it up. So exciting. Reminded me of the awesome time I had at the Kettlebell Cert. Great people and I learned so much. I love my Crossfit.

ABout the med ball for squats: I think if you have a deep squat you don't really need the ball. If you go low enough without it you'll probably just bounce off of it and it will stop you from going lower if you can.
It's good for people who are just getting used to squtting to the right depth.

Pull ups were with 60lbs assistance on the gravitron. Amazing that my times improved when I actually rested the full 3 minutes.

Can anyone point me to any scientific research about squatting with the knees over the toes/full depth? I naturally do that when squatting (butt to calves), but have been chided twice in two days by the personal trainers at my gym.

One is going to show me tomorrow how to squat "while protecting my knees," which I imagine will mean butchering my ROM - one trainer asked yesterday "Why do you squat so deep?" I was floored, and had no idea how to respond. Why wouldn't I train with full ROM?

Anyway, I'd really like some credible articles about the whole "knees over toes" thing. Is it really that bad?

The sit ups were killing me, just couldn't sit up. Switched to anchored situps in the third round, and that helped some - then the low back started hurting. The 4th round had about a 1 minute break in it for personal, non-wuss reasons that I won't discuss in mixed company :D Situps in the last round just took forever.

Seeing the sub-3 rounds posted here just adds insult to injury. Heh heh. Time to start working situps more, too.

I bought a 25lbs kettlebell by the GoFit brand at my local sporting goods store. Its painted a nice orange color, perfect for fall :). I didn't want to go too heavy since I'm just starting out. I'm M/6'1/205. Was this a logical move on my part starting with 25 lbs. Its not as hardcore looking as the black kb's but its a start. Right?

I'll run and do some pull ups in the morning. Perhaps "Nicole" will be okay for someone with anterior shoulder pain.
