I would like to finish the trifecta with honor, but scaling Mary is strange territory. Maybe some kind of assisted HSPU, regular squats, and pull-ups? Yeah.

Been on the crossfit train now for 3 months. Have seen major gains across the board. But when I first saw the handstand push up, I knew I could get going after a little practice, & can now deal with them. BUT this one leg squat thing, for a chicken leg type of guy my age is a steep hill.
Where there is a will there is a way. Will get creative with a rope and an overheard cheater hookup. GOD BLESS LT. MURPHY

I am a social worker and my husband is a police officer and we are avid crossfitters. I don't mean to wreck the fun but i have to say that picture is disturbing. We have both seen similar incidents when investigation child abuse cases. If possible, could you please remove it as I am sure many of the other police and professionals may find it offensive.

PS - 57 min for "murph"

Comment #24 - Posted by: flower3636 at October 12, 2007 11:54 PM

is it 10 on one leg, then 10 on the other in 1 round? or is it 5 and 5 to total 10? or is it 10 with one leg on a given round, then 10 with the other on the next round

which is it?

Comment #25 - Posted by: bklyn_chris at October 12, 2007 11:58 PM

#8- At One World, for pistol assistance, we use the pull-up rubberbands (Held with one or two hands overhead) or we place a hand on a pull-up post for support. Both variations work well, but I really like the band assisted ones cuz you can scale assistance by using different sized bands.

P.S. We get our bands from www.ironwoodyfitness.com

It is a post like yours that really concerns me in pondering which direction our society is going. The child is not in harms way, appears very content, healthy, and has a smile. While your vigilance is warranted in some situations, the mindset that we must intervene in all matters dealing with childcare is ridiculous.

I'm a cop, married to a nurse, and we both thought the pic was hilarious. And the kiddo seems to be interested in what is going on, not upset, unhappy, uncomfortable, abused, ect. in any fashion. It's a fun photo and that little one will be proud of it someday.

I should have read your post completely before I posted last. My appologies.
Pistols are one leg squats. The leg not on the ground is out in front at a slight angle not on the ground. Arms extended out in front for ballance. One of the best ways to describe it is if you have ever seen rollerskating videos from the old days, and they squat down on one skate with the other skate out infront of them. Well, it's that position, but without the skates! LOL!

Comment #38 - Posted by: J the Bear at October 13, 2007 4:04 AM

#35 Paden

I'll take a shot. A pistol is a one-legged squat. Extend one leg out to the front while standing (doesn't have to be and probably won't be a perfect "L" extensions). Lower down into a full squat, which for me is typically very deep. Return to standing. When learning, it helps to hold onto something. Someone above mentioned doing these in a door-frame, in which you'd put your hands to either side for assistance (both in balance and getting out of the hole). If you can do them assisted like this, then progress to holding light dumbells in hands with hands extended to the front for balance assistance. When doing Mary, I alternate legs. Unlike normal squats, your back will round at the bottom of a pistol.

It's sad however, because I can undestand #33's point. They have seen things the average person has not. One of the reasons why I have to take a break from watching the news every few days, well at least Nancy Grace...he he

Oh and thanx for posting the CFkidfit. Don't know how long it's been under the daily WOD cuz I just now noticed it. LOVE CFK by the way.

Comment #44 - Posted by: Gina Johnson at October 13, 2007 4:52 AM

Only popped off 3 HSPU's (free), so switched to extremely elevated PU's for "Mary"

9 rounds on the button... those 1-leg squats are harder than they seem (balance with leg straight out to the front was interesting)

Going to start integrating a 2nd workout in per day, probably just cardio + abs, but we'll see how it goes on the next set!

Comment #49 - Posted by: PKlein at October 13, 2007 5:40 AM

If the Elias Sports Bureau covered CrossFit, surely it would be busy researching the following conjecture: The current three-day sequence of Linda, Murph, Mary sets the all-time record for most work (= force * distance) ever prescribed. Given that all three of these WOD’s are for time, they should also hold the record for the most power (= force * distance / time) ever required.

Can any CrossFit historian provide a counter example to refute this claim?

8 rounds with 1 second to spare.

I would say as rx'ed but the caveats are:
Used wall for HSPU balance
Put back of hands on door way opening for balance on pistols.

After Linda and Murph, I'll take it.

Comment #60 - Posted by: sailorcrew at October 13, 2007 6:37 AM

I need a break from kb snatches and jerks.

As many rounds as possible in 20 minutes:

15 70# Ironwoody bag "snatch grip-zercher catch" squat cleans (butt to ankles depth with full hip extension before dropping bag to ground each rep)
15 kipping pullups

7 rounds + 3 squat cleans. No breaks on pullups, but plenty of breaks on the squat cleans. Very difficult to drive fast into the hole to catch the bag the final rounds. Pullups a bit harder than usual as my biceps were fatigued from holding the bag during the zercher "catch and stand ups".

man, i thought i avoided mary when we got to pick cindy or mary recently. oh well. 3-2-1-go.

for mary, is it 5 pistols per leg per set, or 10 pistols per leg per set?
-if you have an answer i have an email and a blog. i dont normally check these comments here for responses. thanks.

52:04 for Murph - that was brutal. after 8 sets of 10/20/30, the pullup bars at the gym all became occupied so i thought, would LT have complained? no, he wouldve found a way or made one. so i finshed off combining my last 2 sets (40/60/80) by doing jumping pull-ups on the smith press machine.

for anyone actually offended by this picture today, get over yourself. its hilarious. youre obviously not a true crossfitter. im sure bally's has some great rates this time of year. but if you really cant handle it, look closely. its actually just a cut-and-pasted photoshop picture. i think thats a picture of annie's baby, too, if im not mistaken.

CFWU: Completed five rounds with some modifications.
HSPU - improving but I still have a way to go. Did first two rounds with feet on raised smith machine bar. Could only get 4 good reps on the 3rd (added 1 inclined pushup); 1 good rep on 4th (added 4 inclined pushups); only 2 good reps on 5th (added 3 incline pushups): One Legged Squats - first ever attempt - used 2 power bands to assist and steady. Last set of pullups were jumping pullups (trying to beat the clock).

I led PT for my small group (Army guys) yesterday and concocted this WOD for everyone. I had never attempted it and luckily it turned out well.

"Legal Age"
3 rds for time of:
800m run
21 1.5 pood KB swings
21 Pullups
42 pushups
42 situps
42 squats
21 Burpees

The guys enjoyed it and it isn't all that equipment intensive. It took me 36 minutes. I probably could have put a little more effort into the 800s. Send any feedback.

Found in the FAQ section:

2.12. What's a Pistol? How do I do it?

Stand on one leg, with the other leg out in front and parallel to the floor. Hands go out in front to help balance. Sit back and down, as if sitting in a very low chair. At the bottom your support foot is flat and your hamstrings/glute is resting on your calf. Now stand back up to the starting position.

That is one rep.

A great article on pistols can be found at PowerAthletesMag.

5 + 5 hspu as rx, nose to ground hspu, first time with official pistols, wasted a lot of energy repeating reps where i didn't maintain balance all the way to standing.

Pullups were a beeyatch after the last two days. Used a squat rack to assist on pistols. Feet started to come off the wall in HSPU. I'm hoping to soon be able to do them free standing. My lower back was lying next to me in the bed this morning telling me "we need to have a serious talk!"

No vest, wish I had one. I see all you guys at OPT used a vest. That must have been brutal. I am torn as to try to get a vest for next time Murph shows up or go for sub 30 which I think is achievable.

I was really weak today, I guess.

Squats were probably not low enough, or the quiet right form.

Each time I get to pick between Cindy and Mary I choose Cindy because I cannot do efficient one legged squats yet. I have 3 questions. 1.) how do you practice them? 2.)how can they be assissted? 3.) DOes Mary call for 10 on each leg or 5 on each leg?

Well, that was somewhat of a step down from my PR (10 rounds, pulled off twice). I couldn't get more than 6 pistols no matter what I tried; something is Not Right with my lower back after Linda. I think I may have injured my lumbar vertebrae.

First time with Mary. I have always chosen Cindy before.

As Rx'd, PUs on rings
5 rds+5HSPUs+2pistols

Way better than I expected. I managed three HSPUs the first go all but the 3rd round. Pistols unbroken but form a little off. Improved as I went and no surprize they got a little easier as my form improved. What a cycle! I'm so glad for rest day tomorrow.

ok, so I forgot to time my "murph" yesterday, but it was pretty intense. Today, I think I got around 13ish rounds for mary, I was doing jumping pull-ups, woosey I know, but my hands are still torn from LAST time I did this workout, which wasn't that long ago. I can't do straight hand stand push ups yet either, so those were with my feet on a bar.

So today was my first crossfit since about 2 or 3 months ago and i pulled some muscles in my back during football a few weeks ago.. My dad (bingo) thought it'd be good to do cindy to get me back into shape and ready for the last 2 weeks of football..(i also think of it as a pre-lacrosse season workout)

i got in 17 rounds but had to do jumping p/u after the 4th round and had to do incline pushups after the 7th..... all and all i feel pretty good but im sure it'll come back 'round and hit me tomorrow

WOD
DJ: 9rds +5 hspu (10 Figure-4 One Legged Squats per leg per rd.)
Sara: 7rds +5 push-ups +13 Lunges (PU's assisted)

Modified Sara's due to pre-existing knee issues. Great job considering she couldn't do a real Push-up not too long ago. My HSPU's were all Forehead to deck. Calouses slowed up PU'S. That or I was being a lil-girl. Thought doubling up on the un-assited Figure-4 squats would be easier on some dings. They were.

Now to drink some Guinness & pray for a Notre Dame victory.

Lil-Bingo- Glad to see you're back at it. Hope your back holds up & tell your dad hi for me.

I was a bit apprehensive about doing this one as I hurt my knee last fall doing Mary. The pistols improved as the rds went on, so warm up is key on this one. I still need major practise on the hspu. 12 full plus 3 pull-ups of the 13th round, so a partial round more than Sept 29th. Sorry, Rob, no 13 full today.

HSPU too slow this time, I didn't have the pop today. Pistols much better partly due to proper footwear (lifting shoes) and more confidence. I gassed badly on chins and only got 2 rounds straight through.

My eating is back on track but I'm a bit sleep-deprived from being back at a busy station last night. Maybe got four hours at the hall and another one back at home. Here's hopin' Calgary lets me rest tonight.

Pistols need work so I had my heels elevated slightly and dropped my butt to dynamax ball which increased the speed of those. The chins killed me today and were by far the slowest component. Pull-ups turned into jumping pull ups. Today was the first time I was able to do HSPU without the use of the Smith Machine or squat rack. I couldn't believe the difference. It took more time and effort but I know it was worth it. A little nervous since the last time I tried to do HSPU without anything, I did a flip into the door and about knock myself out. Hurt like hell but I had my wife laughing at me.

Folks @ the gym think I'm strange. Asked a big guy if he wanted to do a hard workout. Showed him it on paper, pass thats not normal working out for me. Nice comment. What does that say about you? - a person who comes in here and insults an entire community of individuals who are more tightly knit and devoted to fitness than 99% of the world's population. Do you know anything about Crossfit or what goes on here? Come on? Your ignorance is showing.

1 day behind this week. Did Murph today

Normally would not post 1 day late but too excited about my time not to. Goal was 37-38 minutes.

1rst Murph... 6/29/07...48.06

2nd Murph...8/16/07...41.23

today...33.58

mastering the kipping PU, which finally came to me a few weeks ago saved ALOT of time.

45 degrees and pouring rain in CO tonight. Somehow made Murph seem more appropriate. It felt good to suffer knowing what I was going through was nowhere near what these soldiers do.

reduced pullups to maintain intensity, as they where the obvious limiting factor, probably because the pull ups are the only part I could attempt unscaled. I did manage a smooth, unbroken set of 15 for the first set though, something I haven't been able to do for about a year.

CFWU x2

4 rounds (subbed 100lbs presses for HSPU)
The single-leg squats slowed me down. It was my first time attempting them. Thankfully I read through the tutorial on the Beast Skills page. Turns out, I have the strength, flexibilty and balance to do them with either leg. The limiting factor was a lack of focus. When I really concentrated on keeping my foot flat and my core tight to my thigh they weren't so bad. That being said I would do three or four, lose concentration and fail on the fifth. Still, I soldiered through and counted only reps that went through the full range of motion without any assitance. (either for balance or where my raised foot touched the ground)

during the second half of the second bball game this morning, i felt somethin pop in the lateral plantar area of my right foot. afterwards putting any weight on that heel wuz really painful. tried running on my toes and that wuz painful also so, no breakfast today. but i couldn't pass up todayz WOD, so with determination i met up with Jennie n Shelly (our counter and timer as she wuz resting for her half marathon) at the park and practiced supporting the pistol on the right side so that the pain wuz less than excruciating.

WOD: amrap in 20 minutes:
5 hspus (heels against pole)
10 supported pistols (one hand on pole)
15 pull-ups
= 7 rounds, 5 hspus, 10 pistols, 7 pull-ups

Jennie 26/5'9/160#
5 piked push-ups (feet elevated on bench)
10 supported pistols (one hand on bench)
15 jumping pull-ups
= 5 rounds

OLS's very difficult due to 300 squats for Murph the day before. I was very glad I was limited to 20 minutes for this.

6 rounds + 1 HSPU. Didn't have to cheat on the HSPU for a change, but unable to do the one legged squats because of a mild knee injury. Sub'd standard squats.
