As Rob Corson as my witness I asked for deads today... Bring on the Tim Horton's coffee.

Comment #1 - Posted by: gaucoin at September 29, 2007 6:29 PM

Now that was funny, what a great frickin' video. I did a TGU with an 85lb DB today so I've got my work cut out for me. Jeff Martone, you are a machine.

Comment #2 - Posted by: gaucoin at September 29, 2007 6:33 PM

Legit.

Comment #3 - Posted by: Greg Everett at September 29, 2007 6:35 PM

When I saw a picture of that TGU on the santa cruz site I could only wonder how he did that. Thanks for posting the video, Tony!

Question

What should I use to wrap around my new rings? Is it some kind of tape?
Where can I buy chalk?

Comment #7 - Posted by: AllisonNYC_22/F/5'2/111 at September 29, 2007 6:51 PM

That was a great video! Can't wait to give it a shot with my kid!

#7
I use cloth sports tape, Its sticky and helps with your grip. You can either wrap it normal or use a "hockey wrap" by twisting the tape first as you wrap it around the ring then go back over it normaly, it will give you little ridges in the tape for more grip. The tape can be picked up at your local sports store inexpensivly.

Comment #8 - Posted by: Brandon at September 29, 2007 7:08 PM

Chalk-REI climbing chalk ball, about $4. Minimal mess

Comment #9 - Posted by: x66F at September 29, 2007 7:11 PM

finally a max dealift day, cant wait

Comment #10 - Posted by: Geoff at September 29, 2007 7:30 PM

finally
saw him do this at the cert amazing to see live

Training in Minnesota atm, no xfit gyms in the area but worked out at the new Mayo gym. Only two spots to do pull ups I still feel that the squat rack is too shakey for my big bod. O well. Cross fit eastlake should open some day.

Comment #11 - Posted by: angelo at September 29, 2007 7:33 PM

Dear Crossfit,

I have a friend, we'll just call him Ken C. No wait, that's too obvious. We'll call him K. Cutrer. Anyway, K. Cutrer is a 42 yoa, 190 pound lawyer. He claims his Cindy score was 21 rounds with 5 extra pullups. I got a 16 but think I'm much better looking. Is he lying? Is it possible he's NOT lying?

Signed,

Curious in Fort Worth

Comment #14 - Posted by: andy at September 29, 2007 8:01 PM

First off that vid was amazing. Actually, all the videos this week have been ridiculous.

Secondly, are there any CrossFitters in the Springfield IL area???

Comment #15 - Posted by: pfeif-a-life at September 29, 2007 8:08 PM

Thanks Brandon and X66F.

Just finished doing "Cindy" in my bedroom.

first time about 4 months ago 8 rounds
second time about a month ago 11 rounds (jumping pull-ups and cheap push-ups)

Tonight 13 rounds + 5 pull-ups (dead hang pull-ups and honest chest to the ground push-ups)

I feel like I'm going to toss my cookies.

Comment #16 - Posted by: AllisonNYC_22/F/5'2/111 at September 29, 2007 8:13 PM

Could someone please explain this workout? Is it as simple as a max deadlift for seven tries?

Comment #17 - Posted by: Matt at September 29, 2007 8:18 PM

7 rounds: skip 1:00, 8 pullups, DL 225, 235, 245, 255, 265, 270, 270
then 44 more jumping pullups to bar beyond max reach

Comment #18 - Posted by: James N at September 29, 2007 8:22 PM

That is awesome!

Comment #19 - Posted by: Angry G at September 29, 2007 8:23 PM

#10 Tom: Check the FAQ, should clear up at least 90% of your questions.
#12 Andy: My PR for "Cindy" is 21 rounds, but I have seen guys (and ladies too, I assume) with upwards of 28 rounds.
#5 Allison: I'd recommend chalk. Used to use the tape, til it ripped the callous off my wrist during a muscleup. Maybe a little too grippy?
My $0.02.
John

Comment #20 - Posted by: john32 at September 29, 2007 8:24 PM

That is freakin' ridiculous.

Comment #21 - Posted by: lara at September 29, 2007 8:58 PM

Yay deadlifts! And that video is crazy, I wanna try that with someone now.

Comment #22 - Posted by: Danny S. at September 29, 2007 9:19 PM

That's fantastic that he can wrap that girl around his arm then stand up. I'll have to get my wife to watch the video. She can wrap me around her little finger but she hasn't yet learned to stand up.

Comment #23 - Posted by: MikeC at September 29, 2007 9:28 PM

What? No way in hell did I just see him TGU a human being. I must be sleep-deprived or something.... okay, I just watched it again. How can I be inspired by someone's skill and humiliated at my own overbearing weakness at the same time? Seriously, that was incredible and I hope to be at that level of skill someday.

Comment #24 - Posted by: Kris at September 29, 2007 10:41 PM

Anybody catch the new issue of Best Life, check out pg. 122 they are talking to the F-22 pilots and their workout regime, who would have thought Cross-Fit...keep up the good work and stay motivated.

Followed with

overhead squats 5x5 90lbs(40kg)

Floor Press DB 5x5 55lbs(25kg)

Elbows to Knees/Good Morning Superset 10 reps x 3

Trying to build some mass :-)

"Super Sunday Session"

Today was catch up day. Did "Nicole" then "Cindy" back to back.

"Nicole"
8 rounds of 12,8,8,8,7,6,7,7 pull ups
Total 63 pull ups

"Cindy"
14 rounds
Definitely struggled on the pull ups after warming my lats up with "Nicole"

My first run today for 6 months because of my heel spur. Foot felt great. I am stoked I am able to run again. I love running too much to not be able to do it.

Have a great week Crossfitters.

#30 bladeboy: That's going to hurt tomorrow. I tried 2 WOD in the same day. About 2 minutes into the second I said to myself, "What were you thinking?!" Doesn't look like Cindy suffered much as a result.

I feel the same way about running. Since you started CrossFit, do you feel that your run (say a 5K) has become better or worse? I've been Crossfitting for almost a year now and I don't enjoying running as much as I used to, but my runs are better.

Sep 30: 60x5,90x2,100,110,115(f),110,110,110(f),100 kg

Felt weak today, as I managed to break the trend of at least matching my PR.

Comment #34 - Posted by: Tamas at September 30, 2007 6:27 AM

#32 - I've PR'd every 5k thats come up as a WOD so I'd have to say I'll only continue to get better. I have shaved an average of 22 seconds off my time each time it comes up. I know that will eventually get smaller and smaller, but right now it is pretty amazing.

Comment #35 - Posted by: Angry G at September 30, 2007 6:29 AM

Warmup: run 9k

WOD: ME DLs
1- 110kg
2- 130kg
3- 140kg
4- 145kg
5- 147kg (ran out of weights)
6- 147kg
7- 147kg

Well short of PR (170kg) but ran out of weight at home (short of tying my KB to the bar). Still a great workout after the run.

10 min. on the rower, just had to do this since I have never used one. I love it. Wish I could afford.

The Hustonian gym was fascinating, it had everything. Fru-fru and crossfit. I realised (perhaps a bit of a stretch, but stick with me) that all the Crossfit related stuff was on the outside edge. Kind of like shopping in the Zone. All the unhealthy stuff was in the middle. They even had a nice GHD and 2 Gravitrons really helped my esposa out.

155 185 205 255 265 275 285 (fail)
That’s a 25 lbs increase in 35 days! Woot!

Question to anyone, I am not a fitness specialist so I was wondering if that increase is within acceptable gains given the time period? Trust me I am thrilled that I increased at all and to know I am getting closer to my first deadlift goal of 300 lbs is exciting but if I had some idea of where I should be or at least what is an acceptable measure of weight increase over time, that would be helpful as I set new PR's and gage my progress.

Thanks in advance

Question for Crossfitters. I have a 5RM deadlinft of 270, yet, my 5RM clean is only 95 pounds. Any ideas on why I might have such a weak hang clean?

Question for all the Dr.'s or PT's in the community. During the last CFT, I strained my left forearm/elbow/bicep (maybe the brachialis) on the deadlift. I have since been taking 600mg ibuprofen about 3-4 times/day. I have recently noticed a SIGNIFICANT decline in my ability to produce any intensity without feeling a huge lactic acid buildup in my body (w/ nausea). I'm wondering if it is likely that the advil has decreased my liver's ability to metabolize the lactic acid. My elbow is getting better, but recently my chronic knee pain has come back and I think I will stick to just ice for now, w/out the ibuprofen. Anyone with similar experience or expertise in the area please email me. phx2083@hotmail.com--Joel S.

Probably could have done 260, problems gripping the bar.
Tried 285, after 225 seemed easy, overestimated - had to go back down.

Can't wait to get it going tomorrow.

Also did 'Cindy' to catch up - 14 sets in 20:00

Comment #94 - Posted by: hosedragger998 at September 30, 2007 12:05 PM

Made up Cindy today as well as doing the deadlifts.
Awesome video--I wouldn't have believed it possible without seeing it happen!

Warm up: ran 1/2 mile in 4:48--nice easy pace (fastest half mile in quite a while and I wasn't even breathing hard).

AMRAP in 20 minutes of:
5 pull-ups (jumping to bar overhead with full negatives on the way down)
10 push-ups
15 squats

Completed 14 rounds (problem with watch and think I may have underestimated actual count--so, I'm being conservative on the number)

Did Cindy on post at the "PT track" which has a nice set of pull-up bars.

After driving home, warmed up with:
87# x7
117# x5
135# x3

Then did DL: 150/170/175/180/185/190(F)/190--PB by 20#.
Messed up on the second rep by adding too much weight--my intention was to add 10#, but mistakenly added 20#. Thought that felt a lot heavier than 150!

After failing the first rep at 190, did the "Annie stomp" and made the second attempt--realized that I simply was not aggressive enough the first time. The stomp got me fired up!

Had to start using the alternating grip after the weight at 185 almost slipped out of my hands.

All in all a great day--can really see the strides I'm making. Thanks to Coach and CrossFit!

Well I suffered back injuries and pain for 10 of those 15 yrs, but since starting crossfit just over 1 month ago I have not had any back pain for the first time in years. It goes to show the classic powerlifting moves are the best for developing a strong core.

Just started doing crossfit a week or so ago and love it compared to the previous workout routine I was on.

Did the Deadlift WOD

Possibly could have done more weight, but I was concentrating on using proper form as it had been awhile since I had done the DL.

So I got a new PR for today. And a PR yesterday with pullups as well. To think - This is just my second week of crossfitting. I can't wait to see where it takes me.

This is my first time deadlifting. I watched all the DL videos on the site. I saw people mentioning bad form. Does bad form actually make the lift easier or does it just risk damaging your back?

Comment #137 - Posted by: Brandon Moy at September 30, 2007 2:42 PM

I just watched the video for jumping squats - we have to incorporate those sometime, they look horrendous. Did 21-15-9 HSPU/DL because didn't have access to internet this morning and I sensed deadlifts. Video cleared up questions after seeing picture on CFSC.

Worked up to 378 which is 20lbs off my max so I've got some work to do.

I thought the fact that my new lifting shoes had higher heels may have thrown off my form but that got squashed when I switched back to my Birks and I missed the lift... I've developed a new sticking point on my thighs now which I really can't explain for the life of me.

Felt lousy. I had warmed up w/ 5x95, 115, and 135, then 3x155, 175, working on mixed grip v. both hands knuckles out. Still haven't decided which I prefer, though until now I usually do both w/ knuckles out. Anyhow, just didn't have the power today, maybe partly because my lats are so tired. PR is 200 and I was hoping to break it, but after the 195 failed I couldn't get 190 again, and then missed at 185 before I just got mad. Better next time I hope.

I only have 300# at home, so I did 3-3-3-3-3-3-3 deadlifts today.

245x3
265x3
275x3
285x3
295x3
300x3
300x3

I'll have to buy some more weight for next time :)

On a side note, I was trying to teach my friend to kip at the park today. I was doing some over-exaggerated kips to try to show him the motion, and I surprised myself when I sailed over the bar, just enough to get my arms in place to get my first muscle-up. That felt really good.

I proceeded to do about a dozen more while he practiced his kipping. I see what people mean when they say they're more of a technical skill than an abundance of strength. Cheers!

Howdy, this is my first time posting! Been doing crossfit for almost 3 months now (was pretty overweight back then! And still am a bit but I feel a lot better anyway!), and this is my first time posting.

Kudos to MaxG (#138) and Chris (not posting :( ) for introducing it to me!

Anyway, this was my first attempt at a heavy deadlift WOD.

First time ever doing deadlifts, pretty sure I did them right I studied the videos. Where am I supposed to feel them? On the 295 lift I felt my back starting to curve a bit and didnt get the shoulder pop u see in the videos but other then that it went well. I don't feel anything yet though just really sore from yesterday.

Also any good warmups for deadlifts?

Mhlane, I wish I could tell you. One time early in the year I hit 394 but then we never really had many attempts at just max deads. Every time it would come during the CFT I would hit 365, jump to 375 and nothing. Back in August the same thing. I guess it just felt good today. I also seem to deadlift better when I do it mid afternoon with gaucoin as my training partner. I have added the occasional speed session where I take 50% of my max and perform 10 sets of 3 reps with 45 seconds rest. OPT showed me that one.

WOW! You are strong with the deadlifts.

Today I was drained, so I pushed the deads to tomorrow and rowed instead. I tried a different WO, it was fun, but the rest breaks were waaaay to long. Probably should have done something else while waiting. I will next time or shorten the rest period. Poor times for the first 3 intervales. I sprinted through the first half of each.

Great day!

Made Cindy up at 9am- 17 rounds + 5pull-ups
then at about 1:30 pm did WOD

Then my brother came by the gym so I wupped him w/ a Cindy, he's also a Devil Dog Auuhhhh, so he got some even though it was his first WOD- 14 rounds + 5pull-ups.
He motivated me into doing a second Cindy-19 rds-5pulls and 7 pushups, almost hit the 20 mark. not bad though for my 3rd WOD. :)

I never attempted a single deadlift, snatch, clean, muscle up, or HSPU until I jumped on the crossfit wagon. Now I continue to improve with every passing week. I was always in "good" shape, but crossfit has opened my eyes and the door to a whole new world of possibility. Thanks Crossfit, keep up the dedication, I'll do the same.

All PR's never did max dead lift before.

So my question is, how do I get more weight on the dead lift w/o feeling like I am going to hernate myself? What are the "straps" that people mention? Is that when you basically tie the bar to your hands?

I got the 335 up, but it took 3 tries and my form was GOD AWFUL. My form seems to be perfect in the lower weights, but as I increase in weight, my form just keeps slipping so I dunno when to call it a failure or success. For now, I'll say my form with a 315 DL is adequate, and thats a personal best :)

did this one a day late because i was on the road all day yesterday..

This was my fifth WOD. I have been doing modified versions of everything, so this WOD was a pleasant surprise; other WODs have been humiliating. Kudos to Rippetoe's videos, his explanation of proper technique for the DL was crucial. Hands near side of legs, chest out, bar grazing shins and thighs--worked for me.

My first attempt at finding a DL max...

135 - 185 - 225 - 245 - 275 - 295 - 305

That's about all I could grip without straps. Nearly sent the last one through the gym floor on the way back down.

Are straps discouraged? I feel like I could do more if I could keep my grip.

WILD PR! 235lbs. I'm still a tiny but mighty 125 lb thing.

Stop whatever you are doing, and eat the zone, the whole zone and nothing but the zone.

135, 225, 315, 345, 365 (PR!), 375 F - and then out of time, moved on to command PT.

If I could match this on a CFT effort, my total would be ~885. That 1000 CFT not seeming so outrageous any longer.

Command PT - dang, I wish I could get them to apply some crossfit principles. They are doing less for Sailors in one hour of sweaty and tiring(for step aerobics) work at low intesity than we could be doing in 20 minutes of real work. No range of motion in the movements, no potential to increase strength, no satisfaction from being able to do more, faster. It's a shame.

I do the WODs on a week delay to plan ahead so I can get everything in. Trying to regain strength I had in college before I started working too much and not doing any sort of training.

215/235/225/225/235/245/255 - felt the back arch a bit on the last 2, i will benefit from more reps for form...but this is a decent baseline. Grip felt great after Cindy, still struggling to find CF friendly gym in Fort Collins CO.
