Mercy that's a load of work right there partner...

Comment #3 - Posted by: Tim Hamilton at September 6, 2007 7:25 PM

Awesome...This type of workout is exactly why I'm sold on CF for me and the wrestlers I coach.

Comment #4 - Posted by: McCoy at September 6, 2007 7:28 PM

Comment #5 - Posted by: DP at September 6, 2007 7:28 PM

wow. I want to give 'er a go; packing up tonight, bus to the city in the morning, finals visits, fly out Monday (back home to Whistler). This would be a good one for my first visit to CF Toronto.

Many blessings on the work, pain and sweat to come from this WOD.

FILTHY FIFTY! Whahoo!

Or, more culturally appropriate to my new locale, (insert Rebel yell here)!

Annie, friggin' awesome as usual.

Gotta get a bar and some weights for home - gym at the base is not conducive to many of the weights/running workouts, such as Helen and Nancy; intolerable circumstances.

Comment #8 - Posted by: Apolloswabbie at September 6, 2007 7:36 PM

Man, I've gotta quit my 24hr fatness membership if I want to keep these workouts up. Can you imagine trying to pull this one off at a fitness center?

Comment #9 - Posted by: tim at September 6, 2007 7:38 PM

Nice Annie!

I've got to learn the L-climb...

So excited for the Filthy Fifty. Haven't had this in a few months!

Comment #12 - Posted by: C. Jenkins at September 6, 2007 7:42 PM

So I guess my prayers for a rest day were not heard. Fantastico.

Anyways, what can you sub for the wall ball? Any ideas.

all joking aside, I am looking forward to this. New to CF but am loving pushing my body and mind.

...or Filthy Thirty-Five in my case. (Brand X pack modification) Last time this came around, I was brand new to CrossFit, so I did the puppy version. I'm stoked to be moving on up. And looking forward to crawling home from the gym tomorrow.

Comment #18 - Posted by: Rydain at September 6, 2007 7:54 PM

I was looking through my workout notebook today and saw filthy fifties. Funny how I thought to myself 'thank goodness this hasn't come up in awhile'. ha. Tomorrow is standard Friday rest day for me. Hope to make it up Saturday. Have fun everyone! ;-)

This is ridiculous....

I couldn't feel my lower back and my arms from Elizabeth (11:52 as Rx'd) then I had to do Helen (11:20 as Rx'd) I thought "cool... it will be a challenge doing it so sore" but now I cant feel most of my body...

I guess where Im getting at is... Is it ok to attempt this when simple life task such as tying my shoes prove to be very difficult?

Comment #37 - Posted by: Paul at September 6, 2007 10:21 PM

#9 tim,
you are so right my brother. I can't wait for the trainer's rolling eyes at my jumping pullups. trying to get that all set up in one area and not have someone come in a grab what you need next is going to be laughable. Still, can't wait to get at it shredded hands and all. good luck

Comment #40 - Posted by: Drewsky at September 6, 2007 10:34 PM

Annie - awesome as always.

Anyone know of a good place to get a rope like the one pictured in the video? Perhaps someone knows how to make one that will work?

Nice shirt by the way...

Comment #41 - Posted by: Smitty at September 6, 2007 10:38 PM

Drewsky,

Check the FAQ! 1 pood ~ 35#

Now for my own noobie question:

Is Jumping Squats with about 2/3 BW a decent sub for Box Jumps? What do others do?

Comment #42 - Posted by: timh at September 6, 2007 10:43 PM

#38: 1 pood is about 36 pounds

Comment #43 - Posted by: Tim T at September 6, 2007 10:47 PM

#39: eBay. look for 1 1/2 inch Manila rope in the length you desire. I paid about $10 for mine.

Comment #45 - Posted by: Tim T at September 6, 2007 10:50 PM

Annie, you're my hero! Wow! Skipping this workout, looking forward to the next time though, still need to do "Helen" tomorrow and save myself for Weekend Warriors.

Comment #46 - Posted by: Amber at September 6, 2007 11:19 PM

I just got back from the gym doing Helen to see this posted. So this is the infamous FILTY FIFTY. Heard a lot about it but wasn't actually sure what it was.

There must be something wrong with me. This looks absolutely brutal but I can't wait until tomorrow so I can do it. Tomorrow is Saturday here in Australia. I am going to earn that beer tomorrow afternoon. Was a good week.

Thanks.

Wow. I've got the pleasure of living in Japan so I get to do the WOD's 13 hours before you do and I just finished todays and it really kicked mine. Keep em' comin and good luck to all of you!!!

Comment #55 - Posted by: Gipper at September 7, 2007 3:48 AM

Coach...congrats! I started doing CF back in November in the States but now live in Spain. To my surprise, although perhaps not warranted, I watched a program on the tv last night that talked about CF. Welcome to Spain!

P.S. I continue to keep up with the CF routine even though the looks that I get here are even stranger than the ones I recieved when doing some of the WODs back home. Thanks!

Comment #56 - Posted by: Fletch at September 7, 2007 4:03 AM

Jonah, #54

Yes, it takes a bit of time. Your whole body is being transformed. Don't worry about some of the crazy times that are posted here. When the same WOD comes back around, follow the link to refer back to this workout. (tip: use the "control F" feature to "Find" your user name. This will save you having to scroll down through hundreds of post.) Then when you do the WOD you'll find your times improving. Use this resource to track YOUR improvements, not to compare yourself with someone else who may have been doing crossfit a lot longer. I am confident you will see remarkable progress.

Go for it!

Last night "Helen" = 12.5 minutes (subbed 55lb. dumbell 'no kettlebells available', and did strict pullups).

Before "helen", I did squats for 1 rep max. New PR at 490lb. squat.

Question, if you do wear lifting belts, at what weight do you decide it is time to wear it? Or do you just not wear it at all?

Nothing like the Filthy Fifty at 5am. Still managed to trim over 11 minutes off my previous time. Happy with the effort but there were still way to many breaks. More room for improvement on this one.

Thanks

Comment #77 - Posted by: Leon at September 7, 2007 6:56 AM

Jonah #54?

It will start to "click" soon, especially if you're working hard enough to come close to pukie. Give it a few more weeks of intensity, and be religious about doing the CFWU especially if you're not yet all that strong. I found that the added strength/endurance from all those dips and pull-ups swiftly translated into more ability in the MetCons.

The great gift of being a newbie is that when you do meet a WOD for the second time, your initial performance jump is very satisfying. I've dropped 2-6 minutes on workouts I'd gasped and schlepped through 6-8 weeks ago. That rate of improvement isn't sustainable, but it's fun to ride the wave while it lasts.

Got the shakes from this one. You really need to eat something at least an hour before exerting yourself at this level.

35M/194lb/5'10"
Subbed 10 pound ball, since I don't have a 25
Subbed 20 pound bar for presses
Subbed 25 pound dumbbell (kettle bells on order)

I honestly couldn't do the burpees, my upper body was just spent by the time I got to them. This is only my third crossfit WOD and I think it will take some time to get to the level needed for most of the WOD's.

Total time: 30:25 without burpees :(

France v. Argentina gets ball bouncing at 15:00 EST today. If you want to see the application of fitness, watching rugby played at this level will inspire. Here's hoping the US does not loose by more than 60 tomorrow!

Comment #97 - Posted by: momentum at September 7, 2007 8:33 AM

35:44, as rx'd except for ~17" box, 20lb dumbbell thrusters, and tuck jumps due to equipment deficits. Went well until the knees to elbows, which were very very hard on the rack I was using... and just very hard in general. Had to sub in akimbo-leg situps for the last twenty.

Push press was unpleasant and by the time I hit thrusters the fronts of my shoulders were crying foul. Burpees were a trial; the pushup was the worst part, but it was just a mess overall, and I was eventually eking out each one by clambering up and down, occasionally collapsing in the bottom of the pushup, and my jumps became a fantasy.

I don't know the last time I did Filthy Fifties, but I don't remember it being THIS bad. I think I need a rest day.

My first Crossfit posting! Filthy 30 with these mods:
Jumping pull ups were rarely all the way to the bar
Skipped the wall ball shots (forgot I could have subbed thrusters)
60 single unders for double unders. Need to work on these.

30 minutes

Ran a half mile for warm up/cool down. Feel great!

Not sure of time, did not get watch started over 40 min.
Subbed unweighted goodmornings for back extensions, did not hit 10" wallball more like8'
technique much better than last time.

As RX'd, except did 60 reps with a #15 (I think) ball. Also had to do burpees using DBs laid flat on the floor due to hurt wrist, so with maybe 3" of elevation.

33 minutes even.

Comment #108 - Posted by: APB at September 7, 2007 9:26 AM

29:00 as rx'd which is a pb by 2 minutes. Still slower than I'd like though as the knees to elbows slow and the wall balls too. Too many seconds in breaks of burpees.
post: amrap kipping chins = 25, missed 26 by about an inch and came off the bar

Comment #109 - Posted by: Intent at September 7, 2007 9:35 AM

Are all you people asking about box jump subs really unable to find a sturdy object to jump on? Pretty much anything works, I can hardly imagine an instance in which I wouldn't be able to find some steps, a wall, a box, a bench, a rock, *something* to do box jumps on. Maybe you can't, I don't know, but it seems like one of the simplest and most common pieces of equipment possible. I don't intend to be negative about this, just want to encourage people to be a little creative.

totally destroyed on the burpees--must have taken 15 minutes to get them done.

24hr gym only had 12 # ball so did 60 reps
35 pound d/b for kb swings.
44'45 with about 5 minutes running back and forth, flipping off the trainers, waiting my turn to get on the pullup bar etc--man i wish we had a cf gym in colorado springs.

Despite it all, though I am in awe of many of the times I see posted, I am proud to have completed this workout in any time.

21:12 as rx'ed, a new PB, last March was 24:48. I've been waiting to do this one for about two months because I was convinced I could crush my old time and I finally did so I'm pumped. That's three PBs in a row this week. For my records, my reps were as follows (roughly):

Box jump-straight through
Jumping pull-ups- 25,10,10,10,5 (I think)
Kb swings-straight through
Walking Lunge-straight through
Knees to elbows-10 and all 5s, 3s and 2s (too slow but hanging so my feet couldn't touch the floor)
Push press-40,10 (straight next time!)
Back extensions-straight through
Wall ball-all 10's (too slow, hurting here)
Burpees-all 5's (started at the 20min mark so still too slow)
Double unders-whatever, stopped 2,3 times to prevent missing or puking...

So burpees took me about 5 min!! Really need to get better, K-to-E bad because I was at a dead hang each rep but breaks much shorter.

28:44 w/ tuck jumps for du's, burpees done last, otherwise as rx'ed. A pr, first sub-30. I calculated a per round par of 3 minutes, shot par on the jumps and birdied or eagled everything up to the knees to elbows which I pared (1 or 2 r's?)> I knew I needed time in the bank going into the wallballs which cost me 4 or so; the burpees took over 4 minutes but I did 5 every :30 until i hit 40 then it was go for broke with the finish line in sight. To all first timers on this WOD: I hit this WOD about 10 days or so after starting CF and couldn't finish. DNF, no finisher's shirt. A year from now you'll have done this WOD 2-3 times again, and you'll be astonished at how much you've improved. I guarantee it. Thanks everyone, and Coach, too! BW:174 Y/A:58

The Treacherous Twenty-Five:

25 12" box jumps
25 pull-ups @ 90# assistance (BW 216)
25 25# dumbbell swings
25 steps walking lunge
25 GHD sit-ups
25 45# push-press
25 back extensions
25 16# wall-ball shots
25 burpees
25 jumping jacks

I forgot to start the timer, but based on clock time I think it was around 26 minutes. If that's right, then it's 9 minutes faster than last time, which was nine months ago and with a 4" shorter box, 90 *more* pounds assistance on the pull-ups, and an 8# lighter ball. Hooray.

I've heard about the filthy fifty, but this was my first time actually doing it and I must say it's brutal. I started out OK; I was about 10 min in and I had completed the lunges, but then the KTE slowed me right down. I had to do them in 4 sets. Then good to go until the burpees. 5 sets of 10. it killed me!.. My only subs were 35lbs DB and Tuck Jumps.

50 Box jump (6 risers on aerobic steps)
50 KB, 35# plate
50 Jumping pull ups
50 W Lunges
50 Knees to “Armpits”, can’t quite make the elbows
50 Push press, 45#
50 Back Ex
50 WB
50 Burpees
50 Tuck jumps
Time: 30:04
(had to stop and slightly break down some “stations” so I was not hogging all the equipment at the gym)

On knees to elbows (or in my case armpits), I get this weird feeling in my hip flexor like I just twisted a rubber band there and it is stuck. I had.some hip flexor- ripped one, both very tight/ ITB issues and thinking this may be from poor flexibility there? Tight muscles there?

Set a PR of 32.07, essentially as prescribed but using 2x20#db for thrusters. Used a true 24# box this time and it was harder. Strength was shown in double-unders, where a correct-length rope decreased my time from 7min to 1.49. Weakness was in burpees and WB shots.

42, 76: I typically do box jmps on my third basement stair. Stairs, by code, are between seven and eight inches in riser height. Plus you get a little more horizontal travel in the air than you might with a plyo box. My two cents.

I have no idea how you guys can rip through this workout so fast. It took me almost an hour. If my heart is ok, my muscles need a short break, and if my muscles are ok, my heart needs a short break. At the end, Burpees seemed out of the question, so I did 50 squats, 50 pushups, and 200 single jump ropes. Maybe I should eat more than once a day.

I'm one week back after 4 months off. This was a tough one. But when I was thinking about cutting the burpees short after 20 (like last time), I thought about my buddy Scotty on the front lines in Afghanistan and it seemed silly to complain about this.

As rx'd, 44:21

Sub'd 25 regular pullups for 50 jumping pullups; K2E and burpees slowed me down, big time. I had to cut each into 10 sets of 5. My overall time was 9 minutes worse than last time. Embarassing.

Comment #230 - Posted by: mbalanda at September 7, 2007 4:36 PM

32:24. While faster than my last attempt, there was no jump rope to be found at the lux-o-gym so the final 50 were box jumps, not double unders. I am sure that my time would have at least matched my last effort with the jump rope. 2x20# db sub for wall ball shots. As usual the KTEs and Burpees sucked up the time.

Comment #231 - Posted by: Norma at September 7, 2007 4:37 PM

14# Wall ball (heaviest one at the gym)
200 single-unders (4 per Rx'd doubles)

Felt much stronger this time. A bit slower (34:48 in March), but did full 50 back extensions (last time 25), and 24" box jumps (last time 18"). Feel good about this one.

This was one of the first CF WOD I did six months ago when I started CF before I got my husband convinced that CrossFit is AMAZING!
My favorite part was when I was doing the box jumps he comes over to me and says, "You're making a lot of noise and everyone's looking at you."
I don't care was my reply =)
Looking forward to doing this tomorrow WITH him when he gets back into town =) He's gotten used to the wierd looks you get =)

To everyone with sub 30 minute times I applaud you! Something about CF makes me always want to keep working harder, even though I have a long way to go. Thanks a lot!

The wall ball was the hardest part. I was supprised that my ROM on the pushups in the burpees improved as I went along.

I liked the variety. We had fun with this one.

Brand X pack - Terrible Thirty-five?

35 jumps on a step with 6 risers
35 jumping chin-ups
35 35# dumbbell swings
Walking lunge 35 steps
35 incline sit-ups
35 45# push presses
35 Roman chair back extensions
35 15# DB thrusters
35 burpees
35 single unders

Everything broken except for the single unders, which were surprisingly easy. I've been practicing jump rope, and it really helped. Speed was limited by muscle fatigue and Pukie watching from the horizon. Burpees were slow and evil. I got a few good ones, and then I had to step back and do the push-ups on my knees. And even then, I was reduced to sets of 5-7.

Time - 40:00

070329 - Brand X puppy (25 reps of each exercise at equal or lesser difficulty) in 30:00. Considering the significant increase in volume and load, I'd say I improved. Back then, today's workout would have taken me far longer than 40 minutes.

I expected that to be hard, but I still severely underestimated it. Its pure evil genius the way each new exercise seemed more and more menacing as I worked through it. I should have scaled to 30 reps or possibly paced a bit slower, tried to keep pushing but eventually gave up when I couldn't do a pushup or jump after 25 burpies @ 33:48.

I'll do the remaining 25 burpies and the double unders latter tonight or tomorrow morning.

35:40.

Doing this 20 minutes after Helen (and on an empty stomach) was a huge mistake. I was into knees-to-elbows in 7 minutes and thinking I could get low 20s. I haven't bonked like this since an endurance ride. I did burpees one at a time and my calves cramped too bad to leave the ground. I had to sub squats for double-unders to avoid seizing up entirely. Live and learn.

It took me almost 7 minutes to complete the burpees and 3-5 minutes for the knee to elbows. This represents almost 50% of my time for the exercise. Is this normal for these two movements or am I incredibly weak for both of them?

Of all the CF WODs, I think this has to be one the the top-3 hardest -- at least for me.

Anyway, as RX'd except for subbing a 35lb dumbbell for the kettlebell swings, 40lb thrusters for the wallball, and 100 tuckjumps for the double-unders (lost my jumprope in Baghdad).

:38::48::19 -- which is about 13 min faster than last time.

Six minutes slower than last time, but last time I sub'd ball slams for wallball shots, and this time I did 45# thrusters. Big, big difference.

Burpees were murder--great pace until I hit the wall there. Took probably 8-9 minutes to get through.

Comment #339 - Posted by: rcurriejr at September 8, 2007 9:39 AM

Yes, definitly one of the hardest.

Didnt eat enough, this morning prior. Subbed 30lb dumbbell for wallball. Did 150 jumps with 10lb dumbells (need to be a jumprope). And knees to elbows were weak. 35lb dumbell for kettlebell.

Used a 21 lb. homemade medicine ball, and a 27 or 28 inch box, the rest as rx'd. Slow were KTE, burpees, and the double unders were the worst. Was at 16:45 when starting the double unders, so I was pretty disappointed with my time.

subbed 400m row for double-unders (jumprope kills the knees still). added set of 50 (1 pood) kettlebell thrusters before wallball since only 12lb wallball.

Age 51, BW 245# "Filthy Fifty"; subbed squat jumps for box jumps, single arm DB swings @ 25# (25/side), used 45# single arm bar thrusters(25/side)for wall ball shots, combined 50 pushups and 50 OHS w/55# as sub for burpees and a 1000 meter row for double unders (otherwise as rx'd) 47:40 (3:00 slower than last but with more weight and balance work).

Did 'dirty 30' instead of 'filthy 50', same subs as last time:

Comment #425 - Posted by: Geoff L at September 10, 2007 11:05 AM

BW 127, mixed wu, still trying this wake up and work out thing...ok today, but not great.

50 24" box jump (20"stair, but also 20" forward, so I'll count it as 24")
50 jumping pulls
50 db swing 35#
50 walking lunge steps
50 k to e
50 push press w/ 1 25# DB, 1 15# DB (closest I could come to rx'd w/o bar)
50 back ext. abmat
50 wall ball 20#
50 burpees
50 double unders

40:58

2 min longer than usual, but I did wall ball with 20# instead of 12# (big difference), 24" equivalent box jump instead of 20", and a weird push press variation w/ unequal dbs instead of barbell. This is the one part I wish I could change, otherwise I'm finally doing it as rx'd. Hope to get a better time next time, as some of these "subs" are different (also at home, not gym)from what I did before, so hard to compare exactly.

Comment #426 - Posted by: Sarah at September 10, 2007 11:49 AM

26.15, with following sub's:
incline sit-up for kte's
45lb good mornings for back extensions
2 x 20lb db thruster for wall ball.

Bench depth jumps (1:18)
Pull-ups
swings (forgot to stop after PU 6:53)
lunge
kte (forgot again 3:34)
push press (1:08)
back extensions (1:35)
wall ball (light ball thrown high) (2:50)
burpees/sprawl no jump (4:28)
Double under (broke rope @ 40, 10 knee tucks - (2:26)

Pull-ups, swings, and wall ball took too long. Burpees and KTE are always a problem.

FOllowed with 15 HSPU, frog stand and tuck.

Did this WOD a few days ago, as Rx'd, the time was so so aka 30:15. The real issue of these long WOD I find interestings, its at 20 min, and afterwards, at that point its pure drive, its mind over ATP, its mind over saying to oneself, I gotta find a different gym. I love these long WOD's, I actually live for MURPH, (God Bless Him), these are the work outs that test the spirit. Except for cindy, and for some reason, I hate her! Freud, help me!
