The Filthy 50! I have been waiting a long time to do this, again. I can't wait!
Mercy that's a load of work right there partner...
Awesome...This type of workout is exactly why I'm sold on CF for me and the wrestlers I coach.
wow. I want to give 'er a go; packing up tonight, bus to the city in the morning, finals visits, fly out Monday (back home to Whistler). This would be a good one for my first visit to CF Toronto.
Many blessings on the work, pain and sweat to come from this WOD.
awe.... im soooo gunna puke... etw 830am... 3..2..1.. GO!!
FILTHY FIFTY! Whahoo!
Or, more culturally appropriate to my new locale, (insert Rebel yell here)!
Annie, friggin' awesome as usual.
Gotta get a bar and some weights for home - gym at the base is not conducive to many of the weights/running workouts, such as Helen and Nancy; intolerable circumstances.
Man, I've gotta quit my 24hr fatness membership if I want to keep these workouts up. Can you imagine trying to pull this one off at a fitness center?
Nice Annie!
I've got to learn the L-climb...
So excited for the Filthy Fifty. Haven't had this in a few months!
i might have to call in to work after this one...
Oh I wish the gym was open, I'll have to save this beauty for next week...
So I guess my prayers for a rest day were not heard. Fantastico.
Anyways, what can you sub for the wall ball? Any ideas.
all joking aside, I am looking forward to this. New to CF but am loving pushing my body and mind.
Remind me never to pick a fight with Annie.
how far 'over' a cold should one be before jumping back on the crossfit wagon?
Oh yeah Filthy Fifty!
...or Filthy Thirty-Five in my case. (Brand X pack modification) Last time this came around, I was brand new to CrossFit, so I did the puppy version. I'm stoked to be moving on up. And looking forward to crawling home from the gym tomorrow.
I was looking through my workout notebook today and saw filthy fifties. Funny how I thought to myself 'thank goodness this hasn't come up in awhile'. ha. Tomorrow is standard Friday rest day for me. Hope to make it up Saturday. Have fun everyone! ;-)
Ooooh weee, I've been waiting for this one...
Filthy Fifty, yes!
Just like Annie said: "I feel like I might have too much fun doing this one."
Must you complete 50 of each exercise before moving on to the next?
Ernie #21
Oh, yes. (followed by diabolical laugh)
Greg
man the gurls are really doing it on crossfit. They're better than me! Well i have to certainly change that
Time to get more weird looks the usual at my big box gym. yay.
Good video, please tell me you studied that one closely, Trevor...
The pain train is coming.. wooo wooo :)
This will b the 1st time, can't wait for the experience. Come on Bring The Pain.
Gotta Love It Baby!
# 18 Rydain
I need to scale as well and I looked once, I looked twice and I can't find it!
Where do you get that info?
Thanks!
Do the pull ups have to be jumping pull ups?
Quick question for anyone...what is the PP done with? Just a bar or 2x 45# DB? Thanks
Annie, that L climb was incredible. I want to be able to do that. Rock on.
On a plane for much of the day........does anyone know the FAA rules governing wall balls at 26k feet?
"Too much fun" never!
Filthy Fifties.
yeaa! i love the feeling of the floor after this workout
cheers!
I feel fear. Or is that Pukie?
Annie, you amaze me. Seriously.
This is ridiculous....
I couldn't feel my lower back and my arms from Elizabeth (11:52 as Rx'd) then I had to do Helen (11:20 as Rx'd) I thought "cool... it will be a challenge doing it so sore" but now I cant feel most of my body...
I guess where Im getting at is... Is it ok to attempt this when simple life task such as tying my shoes prove to be very difficult?
What is annie's height and weight?
And how did she get like that?!
#9 tim,
you are so right my brother. I can't wait for the trainer's rolling eyes at my jumping pullups. trying to get that all set up in one area and not have someone come in a grab what you need next is going to be laughable. Still, can't wait to get at it shredded hands and all. good luck
Annie - awesome as always.
Anyone know of a good place to get a rope like the one pictured in the video? Perhaps someone knows how to make one that will work?
Nice shirt by the way...
Drewsky,
Check the FAQ! 1 pood ~ 35#
Now for my own noobie question:
Is Jumping Squats with about 2/3 BW a decent sub for Box Jumps? What do others do?
#38: 1 pood is about 36 pounds
#39: eBay. look for 1 1/2 inch Manila rope in the length you desire. I paid about $10 for mine.
#35: your call Paul. Tomorrow is a rest day, if that helps you make the decision. I'm doing it...
Annie, you're my hero! Wow! Skipping this workout, looking forward to the next time though, still need to do "Helen" tomorrow and save myself for Weekend Warriors.
I just got back from the gym doing Helen to see this posted. So this is the infamous FILTY FIFTY. Heard a lot about it but wasn't actually sure what it was.
There must be something wrong with me. This looks absolutely brutal but I can't wait until tomorrow so I can do it. Tomorrow is Saturday here in Australia. I am going to earn that beer tomorrow afternoon. Was a good week.
#13
For a wallball sub I use D/B thrusters
Go hard dude
sub'd back extensions for 45 pund good mornings..

Hooyah! Filty Fifty!
22:46, subbed 12# for wall ball based on availablity. Everything broken into sets as needed. I'm about to spill my tea. . .
43:48
When does it "click"? I've been doing the WOD's for about 3 weeks now. Does it take a little while before the times start dropping?
Thanks.
Wow. I've got the pleasure of living in Japan so I get to do the WOD's 13 hours before you do and I just finished todays and it really kicked mine. Keep em' comin and good luck to all of you!!!
Coach...congrats! I started doing CF back in November in the States but now live in Spain. To my surprise, although perhaps not warranted, I watched a program on the tv last night that talked about CF. Welcome to Spain!
P.S. I continue to keep up with the CF routine even though the looks that I get here are even stranger than the ones I recieved when doing some of the WODs back home. Thanks!
Jonah, #54
Yes, it takes a bit of time. Your whole body is being transformed. Don't worry about some of the crazy times that are posted here. When the same WOD comes back around, follow the link to refer back to this workout. (tip: use the "control F" feature to "Find" your user name. This will save you having to scroll down through hundreds of post.) Then when you do the WOD you'll find your times improving. Use this resource to track YOUR improvements, not to compare yourself with someone else who may have been doing crossfit a lot longer. I am confident you will see remarkable progress.
Go for it!
50 50 50 50 50 !!! Hell yeah baby!! Can't wait!!! woooo hooooo!!
50 50 50 ! Can't wait! Putting one of my clients through it in 5 minutes and then I'm up to bat! Can't wait!

Last night "Helen" = 12.5 minutes (subbed 55lb. dumbell 'no kettlebells available', and did strict pullups).
Before "helen", I did squats for 1 rep max. New PR at 490lb. squat.
Question, if you do wear lifting belts, at what weight do you decide it is time to wear it? Or do you just not wear it at all?

30:06 as rx'd save for subbing 40# thrusters for wall ball throws
Nothing like the Filthy Fifty at 5am. Still managed to trim over 11 minutes off my previous time. Happy with the effort but there were still way to many breaks. More room for improvement on this one.
Post - TGU with 1 pood and stretching
sub'd 30 reps each, except burpees. only 10 due to injured wrist.
30:24

Short box and still can't do double-unders so I did 75 high jump single-unders. I must admit that on occasion "high" meant just off the ground.

TGIF...
I need to sub good mornings for back extensions. What is the proper tech? Are legs (knees) straight or bent a little? Bar all the way to the way to the floor? Thanks for advice.

Jonah #54,
I agree with Pickle and didn't know about the Ctrl f action. I've been doing CF for about 2 years and have seen a change in my body and ability. I still have more to do to get better, but I would put CF against any other program. Keep up the motivation and determination. It will "click".
only subbed wallball's with 2 15lb dumbbell thrusters. The knees to elbows and burpies killed me.
44:22
for recording purposes, did this workout august 1st:
50 box jumps
50 jumping pull ups
100 walking lunges
50 knees to elbows
50 burpees
50 push press (45#)
50 back extensions
50 kettlebell swings (40#)
time: 39:57
Any ideas on subs for box jumps guys? I'm in the process of making boxes.
(thinking along the lines of tuck jump landing in quarter squat and then standing to extension)
Thanks
Jonah #54?
It will start to "click" soon, especially if you're working hard enough to come close to pukie. Give it a few more weeks of intensity, and be religious about doing the CFWU especially if you're not yet all that strong. I found that the added strength/endurance from all those dips and pull-ups swiftly translated into more ability in the MetCons.
The great gift of being a newbie is that when you do meet a WOD for the second time, your initial performance jump is very satisfying. I've dropped 2-6 minutes on workouts I'd gasped and schlepped through 6-8 weeks ago. That rate of improvement isn't sustainable, but it's fun to ride the wave while it lasts.

Wow, that was great! 22:19 and it was my first time! neck is stiff, but then again, everything is right now! Can't wait to try this again in two weeks or so! Train Hard!
Oh, BW 198, 6'1. Good luck to everyone else that cracks this one out! Great job to those who went before me!

Subbed kneetucks for doubleunders for lack of rope training.
Yay 2nd CrossFit workout!
Still feeling great.

Woot! Woot!
That was a world of hurt! I truly could barely finish, that taxed me to the max...had to stop and semi-recover several times. I'm sure the effin heat had a little do to with that. Burpees were just insanely difficult to finish. I have never done double-unders. I learned during the workout. Nice...
40yom/180 - 49:00
Always love this one
Had to use an 11lb ball-biggest one in the gym

Got the shakes from this one. You really need to eat something at least an hour before exerting yourself at this level.
35M/194lb/5'10"
Subbed 10 pound ball, since I don't have a 25
Subbed 20 pound bar for presses
Subbed 25 pound dumbbell (kettle bells on order)
I honestly couldn't do the burpees, my upper body was just spent by the time I got to them. This is only my third crossfit WOD and I think it will take some time to get to the level needed for most of the WOD's.
Total time: 30:25 without burpees :(

Does everyone realize that OPT averaged 91 seconds per segment? Can you imagine doing 50 burpees in 91 seconds? Amazing.
First workout after a short break due to various medical issue.

well well well.
I shot out at 15 burpees....couldn't finish due to Pukie. It was fun, though, in a sick sort of way.
People were looking at me as though the gym manager should not be downloading breakfast into a trash can on the gym floor. Some people are just never happy. (or would that be uploading?)
Anyhow, what I did I did in 31:12.
WTF, over.
Some rope skipping + pull-ups + push ups as a light warm up.
WOD: 29:40
- 16 Kg dumbell swing for kettlebell swing
- Oly bar goodmornings for back extensions
First time filthy. Felt good even though the burpees nearly killed me..
39:38 as Rx'ed
except subbed 50 burpees & double unders for 50 G.I. Janes (pull-up burpees). I think I made it worse.
Here comes the unavoidable Rugby World Cup Kickoff comment...
France v. Argentina gets ball bouncing at 15:00 EST today. If you want to see the application of fitness, watching rugby played at this level will inspire. Here's hoping the US does not loose by more than 60 tomorrow!
35:44, as rx'd except for ~17" box, 20lb dumbbell thrusters, and tuck jumps due to equipment deficits. Went well until the knees to elbows, which were very very hard on the rack I was using... and just very hard in general. Had to sub in akimbo-leg situps for the last twenty.
Push press was unpleasant and by the time I hit thrusters the fronts of my shoulders were crying foul. Burpees were a trial; the pushup was the worst part, but it was just a mess overall, and I was eventually eking out each one by clambering up and down, occasionally collapsing in the bottom of the pushup, and my jumps became a fantasy.
I don't know the last time I did Filthy Fifties, but I don't remember it being THIS bad. I think I need a rest day.

My first Crossfit posting! Filthy 30 with these mods:
Jumping pull ups were rarely all the way to the bar
Skipped the wall ball shots (forgot I could have subbed thrusters)
60 single unders for double unders. Need to work on these.
30 minutes
Ran a half mile for warm up/cool down. Feel great!
Not sure of time, did not get watch started over 40 min.
Subbed unweighted goodmornings for back extensions, did not hit 10" wallball more like8'
technique much better than last time.
As RX'd, except did 60 reps with a #15 (I think) ball. Also had to do burpees using DBs laid flat on the floor due to hurt wrist, so with maybe 3" of elevation.
33 minutes even.
29:00 as rx'd which is a pb by 2 minutes. Still slower than I'd like though as the knees to elbows slow and the wall balls too. Too many seconds in breaks of burpees.
post: amrap kipping chins = 25, missed 26 by about an inch and came off the bar
Are all you people asking about box jump subs really unable to find a sturdy object to jump on? Pretty much anything works, I can hardly imagine an instance in which I wouldn't be able to find some steps, a wall, a box, a bench, a rock, *something* to do box jumps on. Maybe you can't, I don't know, but it seems like one of the simplest and most common pieces of equipment possible. I don't intend to be negative about this, just want to encourage people to be a little creative.

totally destroyed on the burpees--must have taken 15 minutes to get them done.

35 pound d/b for kb swings.
44'45 with about 5 minutes running back and forth, flipping off the trainers, waiting my turn to get on the pullup bar etc--man i wish we had a cf gym in colorado springs.
Despite it all, though I am in awe of many of the times I see posted, I am proud to have completed this workout in any time.

I am still shaking as I type and could hardly pick up my 6 month old daughter after this one!!
21:12 as rx'ed, a new PB, last March was 24:48. I've been waiting to do this one for about two months because I was convinced I could crush my old time and I finally did so I'm pumped. That's three PBs in a row this week. For my records, my reps were as follows (roughly):
Box jump-straight through
Jumping pull-ups- 25,10,10,10,5 (I think)
Kb swings-straight through
Walking Lunge-straight through
Knees to elbows-10 and all 5s, 3s and 2s (too slow but hanging so my feet couldn't touch the floor)
Push press-40,10 (straight next time!)
Back extensions-straight through
Wall ball-all 10's (too slow, hurting here)
Burpees-all 5's (started at the 20min mark so still too slow)
Double unders-whatever, stopped 2,3 times to prevent missing or puking...
So burpees took me about 5 min!! Really need to get better, K-to-E bad because I was at a dead hang each rep but breaks much shorter.

This was a killer, the knees to elbows were torture for me, took me almost 10 mins. What a horrible weakness. Burpees also took awhile, but that was more just because I was dead than anything else. Really need to work on knees to elbows, or chop my legs off from the knees down.

Just curious: This was the first time I've done this particular workout. I've been following the WOD's pretty much as RX'd since Aug 1st.
I've never done the "300" workout. Perhaps someone who has done both could comment as to which is more difficult.
Wow, a tough one. I did the brand x scaling to the puppy level and it still killed me at 23:08. If crossfit is good at pointing out my weak spots I have plenty. Tons of room for improvement. Bring on the rest day

silly question, but with the way my gym is set up it becomes pertinent:

28:44 w/ tuck jumps for du's, burpees done last, otherwise as rx'ed. A pr, first sub-30. I calculated a per round par of 3 minutes, shot par on the jumps and birdied or eagled everything up to the knees to elbows which I pared (1 or 2 r's?)> I knew I needed time in the bank going into the wallballs which cost me 4 or so; the burpees took over 4 minutes but I did 5 every :30 until i hit 40 then it was go for broke with the finish line in sight. To all first timers on this WOD: I hit this WOD about 10 days or so after starting CF and couldn't finish. DNF, no finisher's shirt. A year from now you'll have done this WOD 2-3 times again, and you'll be astonished at how much you've improved. I guarantee it. Thanks everyone, and Coach, too! BW:174 Y/A:58

THEN

THEN

THEN you may collapse

The Treacherous Twenty-Five:

25 steps walking lunge

25 back extensions
25 16# wall-ball shots

I forgot to start the timer, but based on clock time I think it was around 26 minutes. If that's right, then it's 9 minutes faster than last time, which was nine months ago and with a 4" shorter box, 90 *more* pounds assistance on the pull-ups, and an 8# lighter ball. Hooray.

I've heard about the filthy fifty, but this was my first time actually doing it and I must say it's brutal. I started out OK; I was about 10 min in and I had completed the lunges, but then the KTE slowed me right down. I had to do them in 4 sets. Set a PR of 32.07, essentially as prescribed but using 2x20#db for thrusters. Used a true 24# box this time and it was harder. Strength was shown in double-unders, where a correct-length rope decreased my time from 7min to 1.49. Weakness was in burpees and WB shots.

filthy fifties as rx'd 18:53 my best ever. very close to puking, gotta try harder.
I'm one week back after 4 months off. This was a tough one. But when I was thinking about cutting the burpees short after 20 (like last time), I thought about my buddy Scotty on the front lines in Afghanistan and it seemed silly to complain about this.
As rx'd, 44:21
Sub'd 25 regular pullups for 50 jumping pullups; K2E and burpees slowed me down, big time. I had to cut each into 10 sets of 5. My overall time was 9 minutes worse than last time. Embarassing.
32:24. While faster than my last attempt, there was no jump rope to be found at the lux-o-gym so the final 50 were box jumps, not double unders. I am sure that my time would have at least matched my last effort with the jump rope. 2x20# db sub for wall ball shots. As usual the KTEs and Burpees sucked up the time.

First time doing it with back extensions instead of 45# good mornings (machine was available). Kept a great pace till after KTE where I hit a wall. Sets severely broken after that. Next time I'll be below 45:00 for sure.
WOOHOO!!! Filthy Fifties!!!!!!

Did this two weeks ago with my buddy on my own schedule... man what a workout.
Subbed barbell good mornings for the back extensions, and 5x jumprope for double-unders (5 jumps for every 1 double-under)
Getting better at the burpees though
34:53
30:09. Subbed 100 single unders for doubles. Just gonna have to practice doubles, there's a timing issue I've yet to work out. Bru-tal.

Subbed tuck jumps for double-unders (no rope)
32:56 a new pr by a long shot (double unders are a weakness, so I suspect I could add at least 3 minutes to the above, which is still decent by my standards).
AL
P.S I've been waiting for this one for a while. Not really looking forward to it, just waitin'... ;)

As Rx'd except for:
14# Wall ball (heaviest one at the gym)
200 single-unders (4 per Rx'd doubles)
35:04
Felt much stronger this time. A bit slower (34:48 in March), but did full 50 back extensions (last time 25), and 24" box jumps (last time 18"). Feel good about this one.

hadn't done burpees or doubleunders since HS, these moves killed my time; did 10x5 burpees, 50 singles on doubleunders
strange as it probably sounds, I feel pretty good about completing workout as prescribed as a first try in spite of the long time by comparison to most others
First filthy fifty. 29:58. One word: Brutal
The burpees almost did me in!!!!!
Oh man, what a way to go to a rest day!
400m walk at 4% incline then CFWUx3

This was one of the first CF WOD I did six months ago when I started CF before I got my husband convinced that CrossFit is AMAZING!
My favorite part was when I was doing the box jumps he comes over to me and says, "You're making a lot of noise and everyone's looking at you."
I don't care was my reply =)
Looking forward to doing this tomorrow WITH him when he gets back into town =) He's gotten used to the wierd looks you get =)
To everyone with sub 30 minute times I applaud you! Something about CF makes me always want to keep working harder, even though I have a long way to go. Thanks a lot!

Found a coworker/trainer to be my WOD partner. This was her third Crossfit workout and she is HOOKED.
Her time 32:57
The wall ball was the hardest part. I was supprised that my ROM on the pushups in the burpees improved as I went along.
I liked the variety. We had fun with this one.

Brand X pack - Terrible Thirty-five?
35 jumps on a step with 6 risers
35 jumping chin-ups
35 35# dumbbell swings
Walking lunge 35 steps
35 incline sit-ups
35 45# push presses
35 Roman chair back extensions
35 15# DB thrusters
35 burpees
35 single unders
Everything broken except for the single unders, which were surprisingly easy. I've been practicing jump rope, and it really helped. Speed was limited by muscle fatigue and Pukie watching from the horizon. Burpees were slow and evil. I got a few good ones, and then I had to step back and do the push-ups on my knees. And even then, I was reduced to sets of 5-7.
Time - 40:00
070329 - Brand X puppy (25 reps of each exercise at equal or lesser difficulty) in 30:00. Considering the significant increase in volume and load, I'd say I improved. Back then, today's workout would have taken me far longer than 40 minutes.
42/m/182
23:55
Completed 25 instead of 50 of everything. Did 50 of the box jumps but my box was only 12". The Burpees kicked my butt.
16kg KB, 7kg ball, 150 high knee singles for DU's

I expected that to be hard, but I still severely underestimated it. Its pure evil genius the way each new exercise seemed more and more menacing as I worked through it. I should have scaled to 30 reps or possibly paced a bit slower, tried to keep pushing but eventually gave up when I couldn't do a pushup or jump after 25 burpies @ 33:48.
I'll do the remaining 25 burpies and the double unders latter tonight or tomorrow morning.

Subbed thrusters for wall ball.

My time makes me sick. Just dissapointing.
