Great pic!

(Is there now a color requirement for attire at CFSC?)

Comment #2 - Posted by: Carrie at August 24, 2007 7:42 PM

Annie you rock. Excellent form on the snatches. I was wondering if you are going to deep on the OHS?

Comment #3 - Posted by: Jim D. at August 24, 2007 7:45 PM

When you run out of white board space - use chalk on the ground! (See ground of the pic, stop staring at the gals!)

Trevor, I need you buddy!

Comment #5 - Posted by: gee-o'coin at August 24, 2007 8:11 PM

Those women are incredible. Annie is my hero!

Too deep on the squats, Jim? I think it's safe to say that girl knows what she's doing when it come to squats.. or anything else Crossfit related .

I have an outfit that would totally match. Now if I could just get my pullups like that... Watch out :)

Go Girls! I love watching the videos of the girls doing such strong work. It's so inspiring.

I love the WOD videos they show from time to time. I think I've tried every one I can remember seeing for the last couple months.

Comment #9 - Posted by: Grant at August 24, 2007 9:05 PM

Layman #7, the workout in the video was:

1 Snatch + 10 OHS, 65lb BB
1 Snatch + 10 OHS, 65lb BB
15 Pullups

5 Rounds for time

Comment #10 - Posted by: Tony B. at August 24, 2007 9:30 PM

"Excellent form on the snatches. I was wondering if you are going to deep on the OHS?"

WTF? Watch some videos of women snatching 100k and see how deep they squat. It's called Ass to ankles.

Comment #11 - Posted by: Chumba at August 24, 2007 9:39 PM

she-roes all 3 of these fabulous women!! this workout looks killer. imma hafta give this one a try sometime.

gonna intro my friend to her first CrossFit-style workout tomorrow mornin. can't wait!

Comment #12 - Posted by: cleverhandz at August 24, 2007 9:41 PM

I love the matching outfits. That was fantasytastic!
As for the ROM on the OHS, I think Jim D. was making an honest question and not a critique. Jim, hips below the knees is the minimum ROM you want to shoot for, anything lower than that is gravy and what we should be shooting for. She could have probably got an even better time if she had shortened it, but Annie would have made no improve impact on her flexibility in that case. Also, the lower OHS helps build the catch position on the squat snatch. the lower you can come under the bar and the faster you can do it, the more weight you'll be able to put up.

Comment #13 - Posted by: John S at August 24, 2007 9:51 PM

Comment #18 - Posted by: Harry at August 24, 2007 11:12 PM

so i've been doing the workouts as best i can for two weeks now, and i love them. i'm new to weight training/body fitness training. but i'm young and eager (22). two weeks ago, to track my growth, i maxed my bench press(90lbs) and 2arm curl(45lbs) and my BWT is 126. i have already put 25lbs onto to my bench and doubled my curl in two weeks! i'm so stoked on these workouts and i find myself thinking about them all day long and pondering how to be better and more efficient.

i know i'm new so please don't laugh but i'm confused. everyday before the WOD i've been doing the crossfit warmup as described in the "exercises & Demos" and then the WOD afterwards. i'm so tired i find it really hard to finish the whole workout. most of the time i just take a break and continue later (except for yesterday..... forget that) am i doing it right? any suggestions? encouragement? i'm a small guy but i'm mighty and stubborn and i'm totally into working out now so any help is very greatly appreciated. thanks so much.

D

Thank you!

I would give up the arm curls and bench press as measures of your level of improvement. Track your "Fran" times as it is one of the benchmark workouts.

Comment #21 - Posted by: theresa at August 25, 2007 12:21 AM

My husband got hooked on Crossfit in Afghanistan a few months ago, and he talked me into starting it yesterday. I've always been pretty athletic and in pretty good shape, but damn, I am so sore after these two workouts!

For today's WOD, I did 3 reps each of 65-85-85-85-85-95-105, plus 10 min on the eliptical. Oh, I'm female, 22, 125#.

I'm looking forward to posting REAL numbers in a couple of months!

Comment #22 - Posted by: Sarah at August 25, 2007 12:24 AM

40yof, 5'7, 150lbs
I did deadlifts on Thursday:

10 x 70kg (154lbs)
5 x 80kg (176lbs)
2 x 90kg (198lbs)
1 x 100kg (220lbs)
1 x 105kg (231lbs) (Failed first try – hand gave out. Got on second attempt)

As I'm visiting the parents today and have to get an early train I opted for a 5k run. Turned in a rather disappointing 35 minutes, which I put down to being half asleep (I pulled something in my upper back yesterday and it kept me awake last night).
Finished with 100 squats when I got back.

Comment #23 - Posted by: Cal Jones at August 25, 2007 12:35 AM

CFWU, WOD as rx'd, BW 84kg, 100kg-120-120-140-140-120-120...dropped to 120kg to maintain strict form...handstands/walking to finish...good day...

Comment #24 - Posted by: charlie from aus at August 25, 2007 12:36 AM

Hey "D" (# 19)

Sounds like you've made some excellent early progress!

I am also young - 21 - and was fit but 'tiny' when I entered college. After a few years of Olympic Lifts and conditioning (and more recently, several months of Crossfit), I can say that it only gets better!

Don't despair if you're tired early on... that's the point. Just never, ever, ever give up, unless your body is warning you about something. You can do it! Finish that workout! Scale it back if you have to, but improve week by week! Enjoy your progress and share your enthusiasm with others.

It sounds like you're passionate and dedicated, and that's all it takes. So keep reading/listening/watching to what the CrossFit folks have to say, and keep on keepin on brotha!

Comment #25 - Posted by: Blake at August 25, 2007 12:52 AM

just gettin to bed after a long night out and called it in my head. thought to myself, what could it be tomorrow that would kick my a$@. oh, maybe some deadlifts. this ought to be a rough road, maybe i ought to read the workout before i go to the bars to drink cause this one would have kept me indoors tonight.

Comment #27 - Posted by: Pfeif-a-Life at August 25, 2007 2:36 AM

I think the squat depth was just a honest question. People shouldn't be so quick to shoot folks down with questions on here. This is a place to help each other, not say "shut up and get back in line" as it were.

It may have come from the fact that you see 3 different people each snatching and squatting a little differently.

Comment #28 - Posted by: Stout at August 25, 2007 2:37 AM

I'm recovering from a hip flexor injury, and not ready to do 1RMs. Did 5 x 5 instead.

60, 70, 75, 80, 80 kg

Light weights, focused on form.

I dont know why, but after yesterday's WOD, I was extremely motivated and feeling absolutely violent. I can not WAIT to get into this workout, and really pull some weight.

Comment #31 - Posted by: Intent at August 25, 2007 4:38 AM

As RX'd with a little added pain.

Due to all the squats yesterday, I wanted to loosen up my legs and decided to incorporate a 400m run between each set.

1 - 185 x 5
2 - 225 x 5
3 - 275 x 5
4 - 315 x 3
5 - 365 x 1
6 - 385 x 1
7 - 405 x 1 (this one was a ball-buster)

g2g fellow crossfitters, loving it!!

Comment #32 - Posted by: Jesse at August 25, 2007 5:01 AM

Started a little low at #95. Had to stop at 5 sets because I felt the beginning of a muscle strain in my neck.

44/175

10 x 154
3 x 242
1 x 330, 374, 403

And that was that, too many variables didn't come to gether this morning plus a slight twinge in the low back suggested that I play it smart, at least, smarter than normal.

You can check out a lot of the places by looking around the CrossFit website way down on the right hand side of the main page. As for bumper plates, a couple you could look at would be:

http://store.wfwclub.com/index.html

http://www.roguefitness.com/index.php

These are both "CrossFit friendly" stores. If I had the cash, I'd be orderin' some stuff myself.
Hope this helps.

6 minute snatch set - 60L/59R. A poor hand switch at 3:02 minutes kept me just off a 20 rpm pace with the right hand. Hands in good condition.

10 minute break.

Quick OH squat question:

I have been working on my wrist flexibility for the last few months, and my front squat and hand stands are starting to come together. My least comfortable lift for my wrist remains the OH squat. I tend to relax my arms and wrists a bit once I feel properly positioned. Are other folks maintaining a lot of tension in their arms, thereby cranking their wrists less? Thanks.

Got a PR of 185 today, which was a pleasant surprise.

A guy came up to me while I was dead lifting and asked if I wanted to borrow his belt. I explained why I didn't need it and the whole functional fitness mantra. He gave me a compliment for doing deadlifts by saying that it had been years since he's seen any female do them. Always nice to get those kinds of compliments. Had my CrossFit t-shirt on today too, so I did my part in spreading the word!

Feel like I could have done a lot more but without someone ensuring correct form I did not want to sacrifice for poundage and slip back into bad habits.

Incorporated some KB swings into warm up and post WOD just to keep the engine running.

At a stage now, I think, where I can start to increase the weight back up.

After years of moving heavier loads with poor techniques before Crossfit and particularly Kempie (crossfitnortheastengland.com) showed me the error of my ways, dropped me down back to basics and rebuilt form, technique and fuller ROM. I look forward to doing a 300-400-500 again soon, but now with flawless technique. (BP-DL-SQ)

I don't know if there is something in the air at OPT today because I didn't even scratch the surface of my old PB's. I suppose it could be a combination of factors against me but the weight just felt way heavy today. Maybe I rushed the warm-up, maybe it's too early for me to do singles, maybe I'm stressed/tired but wow, what a huge let-down for me today. I was really jacked for this one, I had my new lifting shoes and everything but it's wasn't meant to be. Time to focus more on strength work. I'm so bummed out now...

Cole, #69 - I'm very impressed! Good work.

First time doing 1RM on deadlift. I've always been scared off by 1RM, but I learned today how much the mindset matters. Physically, the lift is demanding, but not in the CrossFit endurance manner I have come to expect of the WOD. However, I found that my attitude toward the lift was of supreme importance - thinking it would be too heavy would only hinder my performance, so I kept a positive and aggressive attitude and came away very happy with my results:

23/m/155lb
CFWUx3 + muscle-up practice
DL: 205-225-235-245-255-265

Looks like I must start higher next time around - no failures today! Hope to hit 2xBW soon!

Ran a mile out to a hill to do sprints, felt shin splints creeping up on me, turned around for a total of 2.

All in all a good day, just what I needed to blow off some stress from yesterday. Looks like a day for big numbers...I'm looking forward to some posts from family and friends!

it's great to see someone so motivated to become strong and healthy.
keep doing your bench and curls, but don't forget to put forth a greater effort on the big lifts, like the squat, clean and military or push presses. you'll get the most out of them. those are the ones that will build your foundation... and then you can go from there.
when wrestling, i did enough burpees to... well... burp up my lunch, so i would do a bunch of them too. crossfit it cool because it is not uncommon to see burpees in a workout.

I'm not a power lifter at all, and today I definitely learned the importance of lifting aggressively (all with good form of course!). Keep your spirits high and you will be amazed at how much weight you can move.

Did yesterday's and today's WOD

Yesterdays as Rx'd with jumping pullups on last two rounds
55 min

Deadlifts
225 for first set,275 for all others

I've found it motivating to hear the success stories of others using crossfit, so I thought I'd post mine (lurking for 3 years, just starting to post results to comments).
I discovered Crossfit in 2004. I started with heavily scaled versions of the WOD's and generally the CFWU was enough to do me in. Since then I have kept pushing forward and now most of the WOD's I can do'as Rx'd'. Today I found an old workout journal from back when I started crossfit. I had written my personal stats down for future comparison, but then never did go back to compare to my current numbers. I was pretty surprised when I did the comparison between then and now.
Here's the stats (before and after)for comparison.

Male, 30 Years old (27 when I began crossfit)

Before (2004):
Weight: 267
Blood Pressure: 144/92
Diet: 'crappy' would likely sum it up
Max Pullups: 0
Max Pushups: 8
Running: no stats - wouldn't even think of it back then

Now:
Weight: 206
Blood Pressure: 118/82
Diet: Meat, vegetables, nuts and seeds....
Max Pullups: 12
Max Pushups: 30
Running: Did 5k three days ago - a lot of walking, but I finished it.

Thanks Coach......

recipe for disaster:

1) lingering wrist injury
2) ripping my palm open during yesterday's fun
3) 6-8 adult beverages last night
4) late night, unnecessary fast food

combine the above ingredients and you will get a bad WOD

DL'd 235# and 255#, once each. after that, i couldn't move either load again.....not fun...old PR was 275#, was trying to equal that today...maybe next time

I just love doing DL! It was quiet today in my military gym, so I was able to DL barefoot, oh what a difference! I changed a few things from my normal routine. I tried the mixed grip and I like it. Also, I stomped my feet before a rep, like I had seen on one of the vids. It seemed to have worked... I felt really strong today and it showed

Warm up DL
135lbs x 15 reps
205 x 10 reps
225 x 5 reps

DL 1-1-1-1-1-1-1

245/255/265/275(New PR)/280(New PR)/270(old PR)/270.

This was the perfect build up it felt like, because I felt strong throughout. Slight back arch on the 280, but I muscled through it.

Post WOD: box jump scales (12",18",24",33",12") 3 sets of 15 reps.

115 x 5, 185 x 3, 215 x 2

WOD:
255, 315, 345, 400 PR! (Callus in middle of right hand rips off, I don't notice till I'm at front of gym and notice blood streaming from right hand. I had to clean up all the blood I dripped around).

Hand stops bleeding but no tape, so I put a piece of paper towel between bar and right hand.

400 again. Hit PR twice, so I'm happy, hand is shredded. So for my last 2 sets I went and did more newly acquired muscle-ups.

Cool down - 4 mile bike ride home.

Good day.

Looks to me like you're spending way too much time at the bottom setting up; makes it hard to stay tight and ready to go. Work on making your set-up automatic (foot position, hand position, back arch, breath, etc.), and it'll be much easier to just rip that sucker off the floor.

I've got a question. I have been deadlifting for a while and have always been a "purist". (No wraps, just chalk and grip strength) Today I was maxing out at the gym and there was no chalk around so was having trouble holding the bar when I was going for my new PR of 375. So I blasphemed and borrowed a pair of wraps. I subsequently not only got my new PR easily but added another 10# and got 385# easily (probably could get even more). Here's my question. Is it truly blasphemy to max out with a natural grip and then on days like this do the last couple reps wrapped in order to get the most out of the workout? Joel

#134 - It's not a pure PR IMHO. You used a tool other then your body and mind to accomplish the feat. You were relying on the straps instead of yourself. If you didn't get the most out of your own grip, then you didn't work hard enough.

My 2 cents. Take with salt.

Comment #138 - Posted by: Angry G at August 25, 2007 12:53 PM

i know we don't do requests, but I have to agree with previous posters that it smells like a 5k tomorrow...
also, the DL today gave me a real hankering to do a CFT sometime next week...

Comment #139 - Posted by: peter at August 25, 2007 12:53 PM

Thanks Angry G. I agree that it isn't necessarily a pure PR and there will always be an asterick by the weight for me, but it gets the rest of my body the ability to truly work at there maximum effort. I would never use the wraps until after I have already exhausted the natural grip. (I guess I probably sound a little like a Barry Bonds advocate huh.)

Joel (#134) - If you look at the olympic weightlifting events, most guys there wrap their knees. Seems to me the logic of "if you use straps, then you're using something other than your body" is too strict according to the olympic rules. Same thing for "bench press shirts" which I think are allowed at weight events (not entirely sure). However, I think it is a more impressive feat if you can do the lift without any special devices. I found that when I used to use straps, I would disengage more of my upper body during the lift, transforming my arms simply into human chains. Proper form makes this exercise a full body one.

Comment #142 - Posted by: Davis at August 25, 2007 1:02 PM

By the way didn't use no chalk, salt, wraps or a backstrap...all i had were my own grip and ba.l.l.s

Comment #143 - Posted by: Kajan at August 25, 2007 1:03 PM

My back is not cooperating. Did 315 (405 is my pr)and it didn't feel so good. Put 335# on, got about 3" off the deck and knew it was gonna hurt me bad if I finished. did 6 more sets of 225# X 3. Concentrated on good form and no back pain. I hate being injured....

weight each set:

300, 305, 310, 315, 320, 325, 350

This is my first week doing CF. I did hex-bar deadlifts, but I wasn't sure what kind of rest to take between sets, so I rested just long enough to change the weight and do it again. Any suggestions for how to be successful with CF?

thanks to everyone who helped with my previous comment (#19) i really appreciate the advice and encouragement.

like i said earlier, i'm new to this whole weight training/body fitness thing. so when i saw today's workout it was a chance for me to see what i could do, cause i've never done a dealift before. so after the warmups (crossfit warmup and a 1 mile run), i got to it and this is how it laid out.

it looks like for my size that this was a very good lift and i'm very surprised that i could do this weight having never attempted it before. any suggestions on how to safely increase weight without hurting myself? how do i test my strength next time this lift comes up? and should i have a spotter?

thanks

The 402 is a post-Achilles-injury PR. The 420 would have been an all-time PR, alas, no joy.

Felt good to DL. I'm in no shape to be pulling 400+, but once the groundlock is broken, the only thing that's going to make me blow the lift is an injury. A very emotional lift (for me at least), but now I am doing it with strict form as well.

#141 - While I can't argue rules at events, I can argue those events tend to also be with people specializing for the event.

CrossFitters on the other hand are specializing for nothing, ready for everything. If the car is on your buddy you aren't going to go grab your straps. Heck no, you'll lift that car.

I have used the "human chain" thought process for quite some time, glad to see others are using it as well.

#171 Rob,

I see no one has responded to your sumo-deadlift question, so I will attempt to help with your answer, however, be warned that I am not the most qualified to do so.

It is my understanding that the sumo-dead lift is generally easier on the lower back, with more power generating from the legs. The regular deads focus more (not completely, mind you), on lower back strength.

Since we have ME Squat days and the like, and to maximize my back strength, I opt for regular deads. I do not switch it up, so I can track my progress. (To tell you the truth, I have never done sumo-style deads)

But then again, it's your workout. Hopefully this helps.

Wow, I could just spend hours on this website for all it has to offer...

Anyway, made up yesterday's WOD:
As RX'd
5(50 squats, 30 pullups, 15 HSPU's)
Time: 28:48

Felt very sickly after that 1. Will be making up the ded's on a day that doesn't involve legs.

Random Warm up (squats, sit ups, push ups, pull ups) x 2

Wod as Rx'd:

225, 255, 265, 275, 295, 305 (p.r.), 275

The first three sets were the best form I've ever had doing DL's. I was really happy w/ it so I decided to jump up to 295, which I got, but the form started to disintegrate. Still, I thought it was okay so I went for a p.r. @ 305 which I was able to do, but the form got even worse, so I then went down to 275 the last rep in order to end on a good note.

Real happy w/ today. Finally started using my legs to push up, instead of just pulling w/ my back.

Then did 2 sets of 10 knees to elbow for fun.

New to CF; Question about DL and knees.
Apologize in advance if I missed it in videos... I watched as many as I could before this DL-centric WOD today.

Video said bar makes contact with shins then legs all the way up to top of movement. I tried this today (usually use way more lower back; less legs) and my shins and knees (especially knees) feel banged up and sore. Am I hearing correctly that bar slides up entire leg during DL movement? Or can it reside an inch away instead? Please advise this newbie.
