I will be in Qatar at Camp Asaliyah for two weeks in Sept. Any CrossFitters out there?

Comment #7 - Posted by: Diana at August 23, 2007 7:36 PM

AngryG posted that it is not good to reach muscle failure all the time? I just started crossfit and every day I go until I can't go any more with each exercise. If there is weight involved I set it to where I can do the prescribed reps, but usually I'm just using the bar anyways, or with pushups and situps I can't reduce my weight! Sometimes I am so sore I have a hard time standing up, much less doing a squat. How do I know how far to push?

Comment #8 - Posted by: Myra at August 23, 2007 7:44 PM

Diana,
I've been there. The gym's great ok, just stay away from the Burger King that's RIGHT OUTSIDE of it! Have fun.

Comment #9 - Posted by: ProPain at August 23, 2007 7:49 PM

Hey everyone, I am new to the website just had a quick question hopefully someone can answer for me. It says 5 rounds timed is that just timing all five rounds together or do you time the first round of 50-30-15, then take a break and then time the next round? Hopefully that makes sense and if its a dumb question I am sorry. haha Thanks for the help.

Comment #10 - Posted by: Billy B at August 23, 2007 7:52 PM

#10 Billy,
Time from the start of round 1 until you finish round 5. Take as little rest as possible and whatever rest you do need is included in your overall time. Enjoy the kool-aid and good luck!

Oh the Pain. Got a 10 Km forest run just before this as well. Look like ill be on my back for the rest of the weekend!!. Due to my lack of ability in doing handstand press ups, will probably just double to 30 per rep

Comment #13 - Posted by: NZTom at August 23, 2007 8:09 PM

I find it ironic that this workout is posted along side a video touting ways to avoid monotonous workouts.

Comment #14 - Posted by: masterpayne_MIAMI at August 23, 2007 8:24 PM

These Jeff Martone videos have been great. Could you post one where he shows how to switch the kb from hand to hand at the top of the Turkish get up?
Thanks!

Comment #21 - Posted by: Sam L at August 23, 2007 9:09 PM

Sam L (#20). I've only been to a few of Jeff's presentations, but I've never seen him switch the KB at the top. It's always been on the ground. I've seen DBs and BBs switched at the top, but not the KB.

Comment #22 - Posted by: Tony B. at August 23, 2007 9:12 PM

Hmmm, this workout looks killer. I have a 5k race on Saturday morning so I think I am going to have to put this off until after that. I have a feeling 250 squats won't make my legs feel real good on a hilly course with last .75 miles on sand. Don't think I will be able to double this one up with another though. Will have to catch up somehow.

Comment #23 - Posted by: Corey at August 23, 2007 9:22 PM

first off, don't be afraid to scale back workout to accomadate any limitations you may have. that being said, i think what angry g meant was two-fold, though hopefully he will elaborte for you as well - i don't want to put words in his mouth:

1. form is more important than weights and reps; i.e., for a rep to be effective (and counted), perfect form must be used. so lower the weights and be sure your form is good. for those using the lightest barbell available, you may have to stop short of the prescribed reps in the WOD or break sets up to maintain form. for me, this plays out in multi-joint movements like squats - though i may fully exhaust my glutes and quads by lowering and raising, say, 225 pounds 10 times, it may not be nearly as effective for overall strength as using perfect form with 135 pounds five times. note that unlike in the former case, my muscles may not be sore in the latter case. so, muscle exhaustion is not necessary for improved future performance and strength gains. i should also mention that many smaller muscles in the hips and back are brought to exhaustion through the use of perfect form; these just may not be the muscles you thought you were working in a squat.

2. strength and performance gains can be made performing more work in the course of timed WODs like today's. you may not fully fatigue your quads during the squats, but if you can perform the 50 faster than in your previous effort, your muscles are in a sense stronger.

finally, to angry g and all crossfitters, if some or all of my logic is off, please let me know...

OK, thanks Tony.

Comment #27 - Posted by: Sam L at August 23, 2007 9:51 PM

Ooooeeee, what a great video! Jeff is great with that thing. Another thing to work on.
I must admit though that my wife told me I'm banned from doing Turkish Get Ups. My sweet darling came in and saw me doing them and swore I was gonna cave in my skull with it.
I told her I would stop doing them when she stops swinging from underneath a helicopter on a rope.

I'll have to wear steel-toed boots and a groin protector for kettlebell juggling.

Comment #28 - Posted by: jon h at August 23, 2007 9:52 PM

I am going to sub this as I'm not on the level quite yet. I'm thinking;

-50 squats
-20 Pull-ups (Towards end add jumping if necessary to keep intensity up)
-10 Rep Barbell Shoulder Press

WIll report back, its going to be brutal either way!!

Comment #36 - Posted by: Brent Dodge at August 24, 2007 3:07 AM

This one was brutal.

After the first set, I had to do pullups on a gravitron and HSPU at 3/4ths.

52 minutes.

I liked the volume of this one. I got an awesome pump, and I ended up flexing in front of the mirror for about 20 minutes.

Dig it.

#41 Kelly Moore I know your times are always insanely good but this hit home more than normal as I just completed this workout 20 mins ago. How you did that workout in under 14 mins is beyond my comprehension

I am in awe.

Comment #43 - Posted by: Aaronwilson at August 24, 2007 4:22 AM

How does this brutal workout not earn a name?! LOL. This was killer. Funny story at the gym this morning...

I was on my third set of this workout when a personal trainer walked away from his client to "critique" what I was doing. He informed me that I was cheating by doing jumping pullups and in doing so was not getting any form of a workout. As I stood there drowning in a pool of my own sweat, I looked him in the eye and told him I would be more than happy to talk to him about it when I was done. I then reminded him I wasnt paying him for his opinions about my workout, but they old lady he left squatting the bar in the smith machine was, so he should probably get back over there. Upon finishing, I made my way over to him and made a deal with him. If he could complete ONE set of what I had just done, I would gladly pay him whatever his hourly fee was and have him train me the way I "should" workout. He accepted. 50 squats, 3 pullups and 8 minutes later he admitted defeat and left the gym mumbling under his breath!

Sorry for such a lengthy rant, but I hate it when personal trainers all think they know what they are talking about!!! Time on todays WOD 29.10 and every second hurt

Pull-ups were mainly jumping apart from first round, and first few reps of each round. Workout was killer.

M/36/215 lbs.

I have nice callouses now.

round 1
50 squats
pull ups - 8+8+5+3+4+2=30
HSPU - 6+8+1=15
round 2
50 squats
pull ups - 3+6+5+3+4+3+3+3=30
HSPU - 2+5+6+2=15
round 3
10 x 5 = 50 squats
pull ups - 3+3+3+6+3+3+3+6=30
HSPU - 2+4+4+5=15
round 4
10x5=50 squats
pull ups - 3+3+5+2+7+6+4=30
HSPU = 5+10 = 15 * pike position to get deeper ROM
round 5
10+40=50 squats
pull ups (on gravitron, 63%BW lifted)
10+5+4+5
(then back to reg cause I hate the gravitron)
4+2
= 30
HSPU - pike position
5+10 = 15

Does anyone else get that evulsion (muscle pulling away from the bone) feeling in the forearms while doing pull ups?

sub'd self-assisted HSPUs with toes over Oly bar in the squat rack. all else as rx'd.

I kept mini-sets of pullups short and intense (3-8 reps with mixed grips until I hit 30). The pullups felt easier, at least they seemed to required less effort in the third and fourth round, or perhaps I just stopped thinking about them. Still, I managed to rip a deep hole into calluses on both hands.

And I noticed a very sweet sensation moving from the upside-down HSPUS to squats. Nausea, I think it was.

Kelly Moore - great work!

Good job Jonathan.
Here's a quote that your story reminded me of by A.W. Tozer. It's one of my favorites on leadership. It's about Christian leaders but pertains to every leader in my opinion.

"Cattle are driven, sheep are led; and our Lord compares His people to sheep, not to cattle... The minister (coach, leader) must experience what he would teach or he will find himself in the impossible position of trying to drive sheep... and scarcely anything is is disheartening as the sight of a vexed and confused shepherd using the lash on his bewildered flock in a vain attempt to persuade them to go beyond the point to which he himself has attained... We cannot take our people beyond where we ourselves have been."

Yes, all were kipping pullups with full extension and chin over the bar. The last sets were done using Annie's "frog kick" style - they are more vertical than the swing style and pull on my hands less. My hands were a bit sore and tender (but not torn) from the kb snatches done prior to the WOD.

Comment #73 - Posted by: Kelly Moore at August 24, 2007 6:31 AM

When people mention "jumping pull-ups" do they mean jumping from the ground, grabbing the bar, and pulling up? Or does this just mean they kick and such as they are pulling up. I can only do a solid set of about 12-15 PU right now and I just dont see how to do multiple sets of 30 PU's.

The first couple WODs were absolutely killer to me, as I had no idea how much I needed to scale in order to allow myself to gain

On vacation in OC, MD for a few days. Hit a modified "Murph" this AM: 100 pullups, 100 pushups, 100 squats partitioned as needed at the 3rd St. playground. Ran back to the beach for a beach/boardwalk run. All exercises done with a 20# vest and Blackburn HydraPak on. Should've seen the looks on the boardwalk as the weights "clanked" in the vest!

I'll hit today's WOD tomorrow morning since I'm sure one of the upcoming WOD's will require more than playground equipment.

Nice workout and new this was going to hurt. Great job to everyone else for completing or just trying to complete.

I'm in the Air Force and move every few years. I'll look you up if I visit though!

Again, great job and thanks for inspiring us.

most people commenting seem to mention assistance on the pull-ups and nothing on the HSPUs - does this mean most of you are actually performing these as Rx'd, as in full handstand (no wall) and a full ROM? if so, i am SO out of whack with you all, as i can rip out pull-ups, but man, those HSPUs are tough... i am impressived by each of you...

I'm still on vacation so I was a day behind and did the shoulder press workout yesterday at a local gym nearby. I opted to stay away from the gym today and hit a local park instead that had a playstation set up (monkey bars, slides etc.) The monkey bars were actually pretty good for kipping and I had to kick my legs up to slide to perform the handstands. Stopped a bit shy of touching head to the ground as I was getting sore from the pebbles imbedding into my forehead.
Oh yeah, time was a slow 34:45 as the handstands and chins very broken up. Tore a nasty hunk of skin off my hand in the 4th rounds.

Comment #110 - Posted by: Intent at August 24, 2007 9:01 AM

Could only do four sets. Plus pull-ups were cut to 10-15 and still working on HS push-ups so did hindu push-ups. First time doing WOD and felt like I used to after running a 400m race at PR pace(49-48sec.) just like in college. All in all I am a convert from the Globo Gym environment. Good shiznit!

I always do my HSPU against a wall, and get maybe 10-15% without any wall assistance. That % keeps improving, however. I don't expect to be able to rock HSPU in the middle of a room for a few years still.

I get the impression that most people use a wall to some extent.

Anyone else?

I have been doing CF for about 4 months now and HSPU was/is a new one for me. I have been putting my feet on my work bench and piking up at the waist. Today I am going to try kicking into a handstand on the wall. We'll see how it goes. I used to also get slight mottling around the eyes from not being used to being upside down. This appears to be improving. I don't get the mottling anymore, but my face still feels pretty full of blood.

Is it bad that I am becoming desensitized to the horrific WOD's that come up? When I started I remember seeing some of the WOD's furrowing my eyebrows and saying "Are you f'n kidding me? I can't dead lift 225lbs and what's a thruster? That sounds sexual and violent!"

Then I graduated to the reaction of..
"I think I can finish this! It's going to take a while though"

Now when I see them I thank God that I got a rest day yesterday and I'm guessing how fast I can get it done...

What's next? Picking an adversary to try and beat every week?

Comment #131 - Posted by: Swedishe at August 24, 2007 10:14 AM

Michigan:

Kipping Pull-ups are the default when "Pull-ups" are listed on a WOD. Don't scale the number, scale the load. Start w/kips, go to jumps if you need, then gravitron or bungee assited, and so forth. Doing 150 deadhang pull-ups would take a while, plus 250 squats and 75 hspu. Those great times posted: I guarantee they are all kipping.

If someone claims a time of 20 minutes doing deadhang pull-ups for this WOD, I would need to see it with my own eyes...

as rx'd with feet on top bar of smith machine for hspu's. 30 min 40 sec.

(last "set" of pu's 6,6,6,4,2,2,1,1,1,1)

does anyone have any input on doing the hspu's on the smith machine? I started cf about 2 months ago and am no where near being able to shoulder press my body weight with the barbell. Therefore I have been hesitant to try hspu's. Instead I have played around with the smith machine on the off days and have done sets of push ups moving the bar up one notch with each set. When I put it all of the way up my body seems to be at an angle of about 70 degrees. In this position I feel like most of my weight is hanging off the bar and that I am actually pushing up less than half my weight. It seems way too easy. Any suggestions?

Almost as rx'd: 28 minutes (give or take as I was using the clock on the wall). Still can't do HSPUs, and I got asked to kindly not use the mirrors to support my feet as I'm dirtying up the mirrors, so used the Oly bar on the squat rack to support my feet and did Push ups that way instead. Had to break the Pull ups into 6s, then later into 6 jumping pullups, and finally had to move on the gravitron. I misread the WOD and did sets of 12 Pushups, so I owe the group 15 pushups. I'll get right on those. Loved the WOD though.

Pullups (jumping): 20,20,16,15,15

I´ve dediced to practice handstands but the idea of doing a pushup while standing without any support seems pretty far away at the moment..

i had the same issue of not feeling like i was getting enough resistance with smith machines and other platform-assisted HSPUs, and i think the best method is to find a smooth wall, remove your shoes, and perform the PUs so that you are facing the wall while upside down and your socks are allowing your feet to slide while you are in motion. i experimented with the pike position for a while, but felt i was getting too much assistance from my legs, so now i just keep my body as straight as possible from hands to toes. resistance can be increased by walking your hands in closer to the wall, and vice versa, though i don't think it's very effective (or even possible) once your hands are further than 30 or so inches from the wall. i've only been doing this method for a the last few WODs that require HSPUs, but i have noticed improvement already.

27/m/188

43:35, HSPU using method described above, about 18" from wall. these were heavily broken, but i really felt like trying to get the most resistance possible.

hspu, toes hooked at 5 1/2 ft.

squats/pu/hspu
50/15,15/15

HSPU on wall would have slowed me down by about 10 to 15 minutes. I can't find much of an assist that is harder than hooking my toes but easier than a wall.

OK, so bad timing for me on trying to use the wall instead of feet on workbench and piked for HSPU. But, I did it and it was significantly harder. Feet on the wall just under my height of 73", except toward the end of the last set, when I had to lower them or make a dentist appointment.

CFWUX3, but with 50% jumping PU and X7 ring dips.

WOD: 30:58

My kipping pu have really improved. I used rings exclusively for PU the last few weeks and I used my PU bar for today's WOD. My kips are much improved.

Tomorrow is my rest day so work out day #4 today and quite sore from the Tabata I did yesterday…and tired out today. Both which showed.

Did as many rounds in 20 min of 60#
DL, 10 rep
Hang Clean, 8 rep
Push Press, 6r
= 8 Rounds, 10 DL, 5 HC. 3/1/07 got 9 rounds….Bummer. Finished the rest of the reps to make 9 round but that was over the 20 min mark. Arrrrrrrg.

Notice that the WOD’s that look easiest on paper are the most challenging?

Assisted pullups were done on a Smith machine with my feet resting on a bench (yes I ACTUALLY found a use for the Smith machine). It's kinda like having a partner hold your feet while you do pullups. Kinda.

Assisted hspus were done in pike position w/knees on a bench.

I had high hopes of making all 5 rounds but that funny feeling that always precedes pukie came around on the squats of the 3rd set. Until next time!

23:54 - Ouch for some reason pull-ups were a limiting factor today. Could be that I got my rings two days ago and I haven't stopped playing with them.

Plus I feel like I got ran over by a truck today. Could be I did it outside in the 105° weather.

Esteban I agree with what you have posted, but if you can do 50 air squats in more time, you are definitely more powerful, though maybe not stronger. Yes you can make gains in WODs like today, especially in power and overall load.

I fully agree, form is worth more then weight for the end goal. If you can't move 100 pounds correctly, I really have no respect if you can do 500 pounds incorrectly.

I spent all day helping homeless veterans get medical attention, clothing, good meals and some shelter. Today's WOD was dedicated to them.

#235 John - they sell out in around 1-2 days of being posted.

First two sets with flak vest (16 lbs.) then I had to take it off.

Last two sets were jumping pull-ups

Smith machine assisted HSPU's

Met Pukie for the second time in my life. I did this one for one of my best friends, Dan, who's in Special Forces Selection right now.

I just watched "Friday Night Lights" last night for the first time and I had this going through my head during this insane WOD (thanks Coach!).

"Being perfect is not about that scoreboard out there. It's not about winning. It's about you and your relationship with yourself, your family and your friends. Being perfect is about being able to look your friends in the eye and know that you didn't let them down because you told them the truth. And that truth is you did everything you could. There wasn't one more thing you could've done. Can you live in that moment as best you can, with clear eyes, and love in your heart, with joy in your heart? If you can do that gentleman - you're perfect! "

Got my first HSPU's today prior to the workout! Only about 1/2 depth, but I can finally do them, so I got to do this workout as Rx'd :)

I finished what I believed was 5 rounds (38:00), and then I second guessed my counting and got an extra one (50:15). Ouch. That extra round went super slow because I ripped my hands to pieces doing pullups, and left bloodstains all over the bars. Literally. I don't think I'm going to let myself lose count again :0

WOD slightly modified:

5 rounds of:

50 squats
25 ring pull-ups (mostly jumping toward the end)
10 hspu's w/ feet supported at 5' (hspu's - my achile's heel)

Still nursing a pulled lower abdominal muscle. I notice this pull much more doing ring pull-ups vs. bar pull-ups, because the swing of the rings really takes the kip out of the pull-up.

This was a tough one! Most of our staff had never done a true CROSSFIT W.O.D., so here is our times for the W.O.D. 8/24/07:

First 3 rounds up on hands, heels against wall, could only do 5 to start then 2 or 3 at a time up to 15. First time doing full hand stand like this... way harder then with feet up on shelf.
Last 2 rounds did them with feet up on shelf, felt guilty, so I did 25 instead 15. Hard workout, felt good about the 3 rnds. of hspu.

#44 Johnathan - loved the story, great choice of how to deal with that. p.s. just got certified as a personal trainer, figure it's a good first step to launching a career in this field... fitness insurgency anyone?

#68 ProPain - I'm not a Christian per se, though spiritual definitely. Loved the story. I do believe that leading by example is the best way.

workout today, did my own thing (might do this one tomorrow morning, we'll what gets posted tonight)

I wanted a light day: 5 rounds for time:
20 squats
10 knees-to-elbows
round 1,3,5 are one-legged squats "pistols", rounds 2&4 are regular
10 min
then 100 punches against heavy resistance

subbed shoulder press at 65 lbs first two rounds then 85 lbs instead of HSPU.

41:28

Fun note: I've never been able to do kipping pull-ups until I "discovered" how in the last set of this workout, where I busted out 6-7 at a time. All other pull-ups were deadhang mostly in sets of 2 or 3.

Subbed situps for squats since I'm a runner and all these squats were severly affecting my running. I've only been doing this for a little over a week, hoping that I can strike a balance between running and all the squats. I hope that with time the soreness won't be so great. Any suggestions from runners on how they balance the two would be greatly appreciated. Anyways:

5 rounds of:
30 sit-ups
20 pull-ups (jumping)
10 HSPU (feet on smith machine)

Tried kipping pull-ups but I looked like a drunk monkey. Think I need to spend some more time working on kipping form.

Five rounds for time of:
50 Squats
30 Pull-ups
15 Handstand push-ups:

Time- ~42 min.
M/19yr/150lb/67in/WOD#5

Five rounds?! Shoot, this was really rough mentally. I tried to do as many strict pull-ups as possible, breaking each 30 into sets of around 5 or 10 with quick breaks in between. (I had to add a few jumping and kipping pull-ups near the end of every round, though.) I tried to pace myself well so I could get through all five rounds, so I didn't push myself as hard as I could of. Still, it was a great workout! (The handstanders are getting easier!) Hoping for a nice 5k run tomorrow...

Massively scaled due to weenie fitness level:

4 rounds:
50 squats
20 pullups
12 hspu (weird back bend self assist on table)

Timer didn't start when I hit the button, so after the second round of squats I guessed and tacked on 6 minutes, it was prob 4-5 realistically.
