Comment #5 - Posted by: naruto@hotmale at July 8, 2007 9:37 PM

MC, 8 intervals of 20 seconds of the exercise, 10 sec. rest, so it's a total of 4 minutes of each exercise. Hope that helps. This one will be a beast.

Comment #11 - Posted by: Geo at July 8, 2007 9:58 PM

Here's a shameless plug for the Gymboss interval timer. Go to gymboss.com = $19.95 + tax.

It's perfect for Tabata/FGB WODs. I also clip it to my shorts when I run. Great for Fartlek/interval sprint training.

Comment #12 - Posted by: wilson at July 8, 2007 10:01 PM

Is there a Tabata mp3 out there to help with the timing? That'd be super helpful...

Found a timing mp3 here:

http://www.angelfire.com/hero/urbandruid/tabata.mp3

Starts with 10s rest, then times the whole 4 minutes with a little chime.

Comment #17 - Posted by: Matt Q at July 8, 2007 10:53 PM

the Gymboss is awesome, you should get one!

I use mine for FGB, Tabata anything, 1-more-pullup-per-minute-every-minute, etc.

Looks like I will be using it tomorrow too.

It has held up much better than any other timer/stopwatch I have ever owned. It rules.

See you all tomorrow... (!)

Comment #18 - Posted by: Tim T at July 8, 2007 10:58 PM

I always use my Timex for Tabata intervals (but I take it off so I don't hit buttons accidently). Search the forums, there have been long discussions about timers, but Gymboss, Timex, and mp3s (for headphone wearers) seem to be the top choices.

Comment #19 - Posted by: jneedler at July 8, 2007 11:36 PM

tabata sumo deadlift 45 pounds, does this mean just the 45 pound bar itself or 45 pound plate on each side, kinda a dumb question but unsure

Comment #20 - Posted by: J-Dizzle at July 8, 2007 11:43 PM

It means that the bar itself plus the weights totals 45 pounds. It doesn't sound like much but it is...

Comment #23 - Posted by: idratherbekipping at July 9, 2007 12:23 AM

After all those pull ups and push ups from today, my muscles are going to be screaming sore.

This is probably one of those annoying newb questions but how sore is too sore to do the workout?

Comment #24 - Posted by: Westlake at July 9, 2007 12:46 AM

This will be my 1st WOD attempt, im excited.

Comment #25 - Posted by: Mike at July 9, 2007 1:21 AM

#24: I believe mr. Glassman said something like "What do we say to people who have pains, a little injury, feels bad etc.? 3-2-1 GO!"

You are never too sore, Westlake. NEVER! (",) When you get started, a whole new pain takes over...

Couldn't make the angelfire.com Tabata-link work. Can anyone help, like emailing something similar?

a day behind now, did Cindy this morning

saw a couple of guys in the gym and picked out the tabata intervals and figured they were just doing something on their own. Now I know they were doing today's workout.

Looking forward to this smoker tomorrow - hopefully it won't keep me up all night!

i'll have to get creative for a sub for the SDLHPs and the squats - i think more box jumps for the squats

a suggestion for the time keeping on tabatas, this is how I do it:

set the timer on your watch for 10 secs and to repeat. 2 rounds thru the timer for work, 1 for rest. as for the minute between exercises, just watch the clock

Hi folks, just for clarity...Sumo deadlift high pull range of motion is plates touching the ground to full high pull (hands to almost chin) and repeat...

When using the 45# olympic bar only, what are you using to limit your range of motion instead of the plates touching the ground???

looking for ideas...

You know, if this was my first time introduction to Crossfit, and Crossfit.com, the video of the day would not only have made me bat an eyebrow and Crossfit, but surely laugh my ass off at that joke of a workout.

What the hell were they doing anyway? Crossfit is revered as this group of elite athletes, doing the most badass, creative, challenging workouts you can come across, and here I am watching the dumbest video I've seen in the 3 years I've been doing Crossfit (not to mention the huge lesbian vibe I was getting).

They must have begged Tony to film them for the video of the day, because, based on the badass videos he's put out in the past (mostly of the Santa Cruz group), I can almost bet you this wasn't his idea. So I don' knock on Tony, but I do knock on everyone who thinks this video (and the other lame ass videos we've seen i.e., the sprinting videos) is the kind of media that proports the Crossfit mantra, because I do not believe it does.

As much people who are skeptic about Crossfit, you'd think everyone would be on there guards about making sure that nothing the community does can be questioned, socially or scientifically, and we all are always setting the example of what it means to be an elite athlete, of which this video accomplished not.

If I was to tell any of my athlete friends to check out Crossfit, because, as I would say, it's the best thing out there you could do for yourself (which it is), I would be wholly embarrased to find out that there first introduction to Crossfit was a video like this.

Come on guys, be real. Just get Brendan, or Shari, or Annie, or Rob, or Freddy C., or any other of those badasses out there to be in the movies, and let's do some workouts that are actually worth copying.

Sorry to rant, but this is an f-ing joke.

*Although, I just weighed in at 180. This workout beat the crap out of me.

12/15/3/8/5 = 43 (painful to type)

As soon as I hit the pul-ups, it was over. I'll blame it on the 90 degree heat and humidity. However, after reading "JBLsmalls" post, I'm thinking maybe my psyche was affected by today's video. In any case, I'm going to eat, drink and rest up.

#95 JBL -- get over yourself. If you're insecure about your workout or your results, go start your own Matt Furey-style website. Maybe call it BadAssFit or something, have people doing Tabata truck-dragging with their teeth, iron crosses for time, etc. and never, ever show normal people.

I mean, come ON. Life is far too important to be taken seriously. Get a grip. (edited to remove spammy asterisks... Coach, use Markdown already)

Chill out, man. I'll admit that I don't think I've ever been laughing in the middle of a WOD, but what's wrong with a little fun once in a while. CF is for everyone, not just the elite, and this looks like a great WOD to get people started on some otherwise very difficult skills (i.e., HSPU and pistols, in particular). I suspect that WOD could kick most people in the a** if done at high intensity.

Holy moly #95, what's with all the anger today? That's got to be one of the saddest rants I've ever noted on this site, maybe you should hit the preview button before you post junk like that. Where is it written that the videos have to all be of the so-called badasses? Can't they show videos of the lower rank-and-file humans doing their best in the spirit of teamwork and actually having fun?

Life is about balance and it sounds like you've gone way to far to one side to be spouting out your poison to a community based on positive vibes and working together. I feel bad for you at this point and I feel the only thing for me to say is keep on CrossFitting, keep spreading the good word, and seriously chill out.

While I disagree with JBL in regards to the lesbian thing, that was sophomoric and cruel, I totally agree with his energy and desire to destroy fitness. I am going to sub the next WOD with beating up the first person I come across just to prove a point. Badassfit for life!

JBL, Sam Nix, I must sympathize with your expressed opinions as my INITIAL thoughts were similar to yours. However, after watching the video longer I realized the women in the video were working out for real and giving solid EFFORT to pull it off.

I had to remember they are women and it is much more acceptable (Socially speaking) for them to TOUCH each other than for men (Straight). I understand your thoughts on the whole workout looking at it from a male standpoint, I was trying to figure out ways to pull off the workout without being touched or touching unless I was working out with a female workout partner (of course we probably wouldn’t be able to finish the workout if that were the case with all that touching)(I know I am a pig)

You need to keep in mind that these women are getting it done and comparatively speaking from what I have seen, they are badasses as far as fitness is concerned when compared to the mainstream fitness environment.

Unless you can post a better time for the total workout they accomplished then pipe down. If you can, good for you. I for one was pleased to watch them have a good time getting a solid workout in.

Well done ladies!

Wayne.

As coach says, people "will kill themselves for a point." It goes double for team sports.

As for touching. Get over it. Do a crosspit workout. You'll wish some guy was just holding your hand.

Jim and I had started today's WOD and as I worked through the Sumo Deadlift High Pulls my frustration rose. I finished my last set and launched the bar and weights onto our garage floor, Jim cringed at the sound of clashing steel and groaning, chipping, concrete. After we finished we made room for our daughter, N, to go on with working out. She was halfway through when we heard a delivery truck pull up out front, so the mad dash to put the dogs outside, move to the door, and change time keepers out created pandemonium in the garage. Well, we got the door open and Jim went up to the UPS man, started grinning, and low and behold, if only the bumper weights had made it 20 minutes sooner we could have saved part of the floor!

Thank you all again for the additional delivery and surprises.

Additionally, I thought the video was a good one, it demonstrated the team work and the ability to have fun while it sucks.

JBL just said what many of us are thinking: That video was not something that says "Forging Elite Fitness." Those girls were working hard, and that's great, but the videos on the front page are about more than that.

When WOD videos are guys doing 7 minute Nasty Girls, 4 foot box jumps, etc, thats showing what CF is about. Being hard. Seeing those videos is motivating and gives everyone something to shoot for, something that puts you above the rest. If you are laughing during the WOD, you are probably not doing it right.

BadAssFit is right on, that's why we're all here. I too will sub beating up the first guy I see for the next WOD to also prove that point. Then I will do the truck pull with my teeth for time...

I think a better score would come from some kind of a pacing strategy. I blew it going full out in the first couple of rounds of each excercise and it really hurt my rep count toward the end. I think if I would have paced it better, I would have been consistantly stronger throughout.

My first "true" Tabata workout, and the mp3 that was offered up made a huge difference in how I undertook it (i.e no exxxxtttttrrrra long 10 second breaks). I think I'm going to modify it somewhat so that it has a 3-2-1 countdown thing going (at the end of 10 second rest) as I got caught flat-footed, sucking wind out of my behind instead of getting ready for next set. Will post it if I ever get it made (I'm in the process of moving, so I will be away from comp (but not CF) for the next week or so).

For those of you that use the Gymboss interval timer, how loud is the beep and how strong is the vibration? I have a cheap, $14.95 Everlast "timer" and when working out, you can't hear the bell and you can't feel the vibration.

Also, when WODs call for rowing, is "1k" 1,000 meters? I'm new to this Crossfit thing.

opted to do clean & press 135x50 instead. limited self to 5 reps or less per set.
still only took about 8, 9, 10 mins or so.
followed up with some footwork/speed drills.

another quick question (sorry beginner here)

Do you each exercise 8 times through (i.e. 8 rounds of sdhp, before moving on to 8 rounds of squat, before moving on to 8 rounds of pull-up) OR do you do 1 round of sdhp, then 1 round of squat, then 1 round of pull up, etc. with each 1 round of each exercise making 1 Tabata???

I wasn't sure on that and wanted to make sure I went about it the right way. Regardless it's going to break me and I love it.

10 minute kb jerk set this morning: 63R/57L.

WOD done after work.

I wanted to do one more rep for every tabata interval for every exercise than I did on 042210. I succeeded - just made it on the SHPs, squats, pushups and situps. Easily bested my goal on pullups...should have aimed higher.

45# SHP - 13. Max effort, no more to give
Squat - 23. Max effort after SHP. Full hip extension, Dynamax ball depth
Pullup - 9. Very strong; should have done 11-12 per round
Pushup - 15. Chest to deck with full elbow extension. Close to a max effort. I believe this is a PR.
Anchored situp - 16. Max effort...I have no idea how folks do them so fast

76 total.

9-19-5-10-14 total: 57 Tabitas are interesting because they require that you guess a number of reps you feel you can hold; go out too hard, you explode, go out too easy and you short yourself. My strategy sort of worked, except with the pullups where I thought I could hold 10 reps, wrong! I limped home with 5 at the end. Thanks, Coach! BW:175, Y/A:58

With respect to JBL...a thought. Yes the Video is a departure, but after todays WOD, what the heck. WE here in Jax have all sorts involved in CF, heck we have this 60 some old gal, a grandmother who climbs the stairs of our tallest building once a week with the team, and each week her times get faster and faster. Heck, I am an old guy, relative to the rest of you, and when we have our cross city meetings, I can keep my own with some of the best of our local police and Navy CF dudes and dudets, the things is, work hard, kill your self, and at the end, smile and be damn proud that you gave 100%. That's CF. Now with respect to the video, as a male, I have no trouble watching a video which has in the slightest way a lesbian suggestion....its just good video, it promotes growth hormone and testosterone secreation, and I say the better ...LOL// Looking forward to CF in JAX in Sept.

Crashed physically and mentally during pullups. Tried to make it up on pushups and then situps, paid for the ambition on both counts. Ugh.

Never been so glad for a rest day.

Comment #246 - Posted by: Patrick at July 9, 2007 6:51 PM

A workout behind....
"Cindy"
5 pull ups, asst
10 Push ups
15 squats
=20 rounds + 5 pull ups + 5 push ups
4/16/07: 21 R + 5 Pull ups but more asst on pull ups
I am going through my "I feel tired out" phase. Prob should ease up or take another rest day.

Evening: Soccer 60 min, hot& humid and few on our team showed up so we played short players and pretty much just ran ran ran :)

This workout was effin brutal. You guys clearly show how much training helps because I do better than everyone I know at these workouts and I struggle like hell and don't score nearly as high as you. I think maybe I didn't pace myself well enough, i rushed through the first few sets and was fatigued.

Should I take it easy? Or go as hard as I can on every set for 20 seconds?

My results:
SDLH - 9, 10, 13, 10, 8, 7, 8, 8
Squat - 15, 12, 12, 12, 11, 10, 10, 11
Pullup - 8, 4, 4, 4 (STOPPED kipping here, was way too hard!!), 4 negatives, 4 negatives, 3 negatives, , 3 negatives
Pushup - 19, 11, 9, 7, 7, 6, 6, 6
Situps (feet under bench, hands behind head, body flat, to vertical position) - 9, 10, 9, 7, 9, 7, 7, 7, 7

Total Score: 7 + 10 + 3 + 6 + 7 = 33

And I felt DEAD!!!

1) How exactly are the sprinting videos lame? I would think that a major part of GPP is the ability to sprint a short distance very quickly.
2) What exactly is lame about handstand push-ups, one-legged squats, and ju-jitsu sit-ups. I realize that they are assisted in the video, but we all had to scale workouts when we first started (I still do sometimes), and a video showing how to do it properly certainly isn't going to hurt anyone.

I love the "bad-ass" videos becuase they inspire me with long-term goals, but I found this video tremendously helpful for my short-term goals. Maybe using their techniques I can finally learn how do to a one-legged squat.

To anyone asking about a tabata strategy:

I think you should go full blast on every interval. Do you want a good score or a good workout?

The workout calls for 20 seconds of work followed by 10 seconds of rest, to be repeated 7 times, per esercise. What good does it do if you stop at 10 reps, when you could have done 15, just so you could maintain a good rep count from the first to last interval?

I thought the point was to do maximum output during each and every interval, so as to eventually improve recovery time and strength. To me, a score should not be a tool to impress others, but rather a gauge to track improvements in performance and fitness levels. Don't cheat yourself by working just to get a good score!!

Yes the video is not the most hard core workout but so what! There are people with all different levels of fitness doing Crossfit workouts and maybe that video is aimed at them. My kids do scaled down versions of the workouts all the time and I think this workout would be good one for them.

I'm sorry I don't remember the one girls name that's in the video but she was at the Crossfit Seminar in Ann Arbor I attended and she is a bad ass. Check out the Hot Mama Clean Pull up video.

Plus you don't know the commentary that is going on while they are working out. Maybe it was funny????

To the people that want to be memebers of BaddAssFit I wish was that first person you see so you can try to knock me out. Pack a lunch.

A higher score means more work done in the same amount of time. I prefer to work smarter so I can work harder. Eventually I want to get to the point that I can go all out the entire time, so I add a rep or two each time. Burning out in the first three rounds may not be the best technique for everybody. Obviously if you are holding back and have something left on the last round then you could have pushed harder. But there is something to be said for aggressive pacing. Just my 2 cents.

Do their workout tomorrow in better time without assistance and I'll listen to your opinion (and maybe even join you at BadA$$Fit).

I'm pretty sure that "nothing the community questions" is not part of the program design here. The revolution wasn't televised, it was on your media player.

I think I did SDHPs wrong- I stood up completely between each rep setting the barbell down, then squatting to pick it back up instead of continuing squatting down and then back up again with the bar in hand??

Felt like I might puke afterwards- my arms and legs are fried from yesterday and today.
