Interesting workout...haven't seen this one yet.

Comment #1 - Posted by: NAVAFIT at July 4, 2007 7:56 PM

What is a good sub for the row? Thanks in advance.

Comment #2 - Posted by: Grund at July 4, 2007 8:00 PM

Is there a typo here? Is the row supposed to be before the five rounds part?

Comment #3 - Posted by: Mike at July 4, 2007 8:02 PM

Sick video! I loved it!

Comment #4 - Posted by: AUty at July 4, 2007 8:02 PM

any idea what women scale to for the PJ?

Comment #5 - Posted by: sarena at July 4, 2007 8:09 PM

Grund: From the FAQs

Do Sumo Deadlift High Pulls (see exercise page for demo):
If you don't have a rower substitute sumo-dealift high pulls (sdhp) with 45 pounds for men and 30 pounds for women. Take the bar from mid shin to under your chin--"shin to chin."
2K row = 200 sdhp's, 1K row = 100 sdhp's, 500 meter row = 50 sdhp's

Thanks OPT Mommy. I just watched the video and saw that one. One sick (LOL!!!) WOD--I wanna play next year in the games. Awesome.

This will be fun after the CFT. Btw, I got a 450 (PRs all aorund). The CFNYC group truly rocks!

Comment #9 - Posted by: sarena at July 4, 2007 8:18 PM

The video is just awesome, I can't wait to do this tomorrow.

Comment #10 - Posted by: gaucoin at July 4, 2007 8:22 PM

Speal,

Very impressive times on the hopper and trail run.

Comment #11 - Posted by: Alfie at July 4, 2007 8:24 PM

I haven't been working hard enough.

Comment #12 - Posted by: Tim at July 4, 2007 8:31 PM

I wonder how many of the CFT results were PRs?

Comment #13 - Posted by: wilson at July 4, 2007 8:41 PM

That hopper wod is brutal!! Nice work guys and girls. As I watched the video, I cringed with you as I saw him write "5 Rounds!"

Comment #14 - Posted by: CraigH at July 4, 2007 9:08 PM

just 2 make sure....1k row = 100 sumo deadlifts right?

Comment #15 - Posted by: Chris S at July 4, 2007 9:09 PM

Hello, I was just wondering what does the 1k mean ? (as in 1k row) i'm new to crossfit. Thanks :)

Comment #16 - Posted by: Stefan G at July 4, 2007 9:20 PM

All,

Question on the pull ups in the video. I notice heaps of body flick, during the pull up. I have always been taught to do pull ups with zero lower body movement. I am new to crossfit... is this the norm for pull ups? I have been really scared by the numbers of pull ups in the WOD, maybe this is part of the explanation?

Cheers,

Cameron

Comment #17 - Posted by: cameron at July 4, 2007 9:21 PM

That is normal. It is called a kipping pull-up, tons of info in the forums about them.

Comment #18 - Posted by: Angry G at July 4, 2007 9:22 PM

i HAVE to quit watching these videos before i go to bed bc all i want to do is workout after them, haha.

Comment #19 - Posted by: cletus at July 4, 2007 9:49 PM

Suck on that, peeps! Prepare for DOMS like you read about. I'm still sore today.

I'm counting my time from Saturday - 20:10, as rx'd.
(I had the weight racked & 3 jerks to go at the 20 min cutoff.)

For the questions - Row the 1k, and then the 5 rds.

For the animals like Brendan, AFT, OPT, Chris S., etc., nothing but respect and props. Really, for anyone who finished under 20 mins. That is a brutal WoD. I'd like to see Matt Gag's time on this one.

Comment #20 - Posted by: Dale Saran at July 4, 2007 9:50 PM

I sure don't look too happy in this video. I was though, I just didn't realize it yet. Thanks for posting the results and the videos.

Comment #21 - Posted by: russ greene at July 4, 2007 9:52 PM

32"35 for hopper without row.
pull ups were chest to bar without kipping.
i must learn how to kip, it is costing me valuable time!

Comment #23 - Posted by: steve at July 4, 2007 10:13 PM

Russ - I just laughed out loud when I watched that. Brutally funny.

Comment #24 - Posted by: Dale Saran at July 4, 2007 10:22 PM

Inspirational video! It's getting me psyched for tomorrow.

Comment #25 - Posted by: Beemo at July 4, 2007 10:33 PM

trying to not irritate the runner's knee so avoiding a lot of bending of the legs under pressure.

a good average time for 1K on the rower for me is 5:30, so...

5:30 jumping rope then the five rnds as rxd. we'll see how well this goes....

Comment #26 - Posted by: sleepy at July 4, 2007 10:36 PM

That's just not nice. I'm gonna have to do that in morning so I can recover a little bit before rugby practice

Comment #27 - Posted by: Kevin M at July 4, 2007 10:40 PM

OPT, AFT, Mr. Everett, and all of those competitors who made the inaugural Crossfit games a possibility awesome job…

Your dedication to the pursuit of fitness and the Crossfit lifestyle is an inspiration to many of us, especially me. I could only hope to compete with you one year on the field of battle (Spartan flair)

I am inspired by the posted performances and the abilities demonstrated…thanks!

To all competitors, even those not in the top few, well done… It takes a lot to step up to the plate and leave it all out there in competition…regardless if not winning, being there demonstrates your character…awesome…

I hope to have the confidence next year to step up… by Then I will have a little over 1 year cross fitting…hopefully that will provide a good base, maybe enough to compete?

Wayne.

Comment #28 - Posted by: wtp at July 4, 2007 11:18 PM

Sleepy, I'm amazed, I *avoided* skipping and rowed instead when I had runner's knee recently!

Comment #29 - Posted by: Luke at July 4, 2007 11:26 PM

well, that proved to suck

the jumping rope was a far cry, i'm sure, from the effects of a 1K row, but it did give my calves and shoulders a good burn

i couldn't even manage the 135, so had to bump it down to 115

i had forgotten how many reps of the push press to do by the time i had gotten to it, so i did 15 instead of the rxd 7. but i only managed three rounds instead of five

better than nothing..

Comment #30 - Posted by: sleepy at July 5, 2007 12:11 AM

What is the proper substitute for the 1K row? I do not have access to a boat or a rowing machine.

Comment #31 - Posted by: Andrew at July 5, 2007 12:21 AM

NICE!! I can't wait.

Questions Questions.

#1. I always do the pull-ups where I keep my body from swinging. Is that alright or should I start doing my pull-ups like the people in the workout video?

#2. How can I gain size without gaining body fat?

I looked for the answers and couldn't find anything. Thanks everyone.

Comment #32 - Posted by: Nick C. at July 5, 2007 12:48 AM

Nick C, check the FAQ and look for comments on kipping - loads of info discussing why we do our pull-ups like that.

http://www.crossfit.com/cf-info/faq.html

While you're there at least scan the rest of it. Lots of answers to questions you don't even have yet.

Post your second question on the fitness or nutrition boards or just look at a couple of the threads that are live at the moment. The threads on the front page are primarily for results from the WOD and questions realting to their execution. More general questions will get more attention in the appropraite section on the message boards.

You have stumbled onto a gold mine of information here at CrossFit. To fit in though, you are going to have to make a little more of an effort to help yourself.

Cheers, kempie

Cant really do push press as have torn a ligament in my knee and can't bend it properly or put any weight on it. Going to do 5 rounds of max pullups and max bodyweight bench instead. see how I go...

SDHP + 3 rounds in 14:11 when a new client showed up an hour early for her first session.

1 hour later did 2 more rounds in 5:15

Def would have been over 20 mins without the break but very happy with the way my new-found kip help up. 4's and 5's all through.

Cheers, kempie

Comment #46 - Posted by: kempie at July 5, 2007 6:28 AM

Subbed sdhp for the row using a 20kg KB. That was tougher than I was expecting, something in my rear delts are hating me..

Scaled the push press down to a 40kg bar bell as I am not very confident in my cleans. By the time I did the fifth set things felt a lot better.

most of the sets of 25 pull ups were split into 10 or 5 rep lumps. I'm haven't got the hang of kipping plus my pull up bar inhibits much movement so all pull ups were done strict...

I can jackhammer the Push Jerks. My pull-ups are my weak link every time. I have done CF since Nov. pull-ups since high school and I can not seem to get more than 16-18 in one shot. At one point last year I could crank out 25 without kipping, but I was doing weighted and unweighted routines 6 days a week. Now on a good day I get 15 kipping. I figure that with as many PU's as we do I should be increasing. What is going on?

This was a weird one for me, it was hard, but not as brutal as it could have been if I could do pullups faster. I can't kip because I only have a dip/pullup tower to work on so all my sets were very broken after first set. It gave me more rest than I really wanted, but doing 125 almost strict pullups for me is just a real killer. I flew through the row in just over 3 mins and each set of push jerks was maybe 30 seconds. I pretty much did 25 mins of broken pullups.

This brings up a question. If you can physically kip because of equipment limitations, might it be better to use pullup assist machine so you can complete pullups more quickly to keep heart rate way up there?

#66 Mike J from what I've heard the trail run was a brutal 5K with many many ups and downs, and some walking was required.

#82 Patrick D push jerks are from the shoulders but you gotta get them up there to start somehow. Clean them up there and then do the jerks. Check the exercise page...

#89 Uncle Rico first of all how is Napoleon doing and secondly what stops you at 15 kippers? Your grip or something else?

#91 Corey if you can do that many chins you sure as hell don't need to be using assistance for anything, get your gym to get a frickin' real chin-up bar!

#93 Ben the guy in the blue/black shorts came 2nd so what he does works!

Okay I'm taking all comers today, but I'll shut up if y'all want me to.

gaucoin - looking at your time makes me think must be something in the water up there in the Great White North, eh?

Mark Rosen - We were both so close, yet so far. No matter where next year's is, I'm going. It was crazy fun, with such a great sense of camaraderie. I may try to bring a few friends with me.

BCoop (#34) - I was representing the rest of the herd. Funny thing is how nice, helpful (and better-looking) the lead of the herd was. By the way, I'm the second guy laying on my back in the video, rolling around in agony. The first guy doing that (aka AFT) came in first, IIRC.

for your first question, i would suggest learning how to do a kipping pullup. it helps a lot with your time. i used to do the strict pullups because i thought kipping ones were cheating, but it's really the same amount of work, just spread throughout the body. search through the wod archives and the message board for videos on kipping pullups. i remember one that helped me a lot but i forgot where it was

hello everyone! I'm new to Cross-fit this week. It is refreshing to find something new instead of the same old, same old. Just wonderin', do you guys do the official CF WU X3 or do you start cold or warm up with you own thing?

Comment #138 - Posted by: Jon J at July 5, 2007 1:59 PM

Just some musing from a loyal and loving CF member:

Although I believe that the hopper concept is effective in comparing Crossfitters to non-Crossfitters, I think that in order to compare Crossfitters against each other requires intentionally choosing exercises that test all 10 general physical skills. The most "fit" person should have some ability in all areas, and it is difficult to test all 10 skills with only 4 or 5 exercises. Maybe some sort of mandatory portion would be included in each CF Games, akin to the figure skating mandatory skills that used to be part of Olympic figure skating. I am in no way implying that the top finishers this year are not the most fit; in fact, I think that they are, based on my first hand knowledge of Josh Everett's abilities. I just think that the hopper might favor the specialist who is lucky enough to have two or three of his favorite exercises get pulled out of the barrel. Any thoughts?

Wow, those push jerks really hurt me so good. I'm loving having to learn all these new compound exercises every couple of days thanks to CrossFit. Proud to be a convert and just subscribed to the newsletter a couple days ago. Anyway, here are the stats:

CFWU x 3 subbing push-ups for the pull-ups.

WOD - 33:27.25.
Used 105# for push jerks because I'm still learning technique - still challenged and made me want to give up in between each set but I pulled through.

Thanks again for teaching me something new everyday CF!

Pullups were failing at round 4, just doing onesies. Round one/two I was crushed from metcon, by round four, I couldn't do pullups fast enough to keep it a metcon workout. Still, holy smokes, six months ago I couldn't do 40 pullups in 28 mins, much less 125

Did this one today, I'm a day behind.

35/M/82kg

Subbed 100 x 20kg sumo deadlift high pulls for the rows.
Jumping pullups because I can't kip safely on my chinup bar.
42.5kg Push Jerks because these were my first ever Push Jerks and I didn't want to find out the hard way I can't do 60kg.

All sets broken:
"Rows" 25, 15, 10, 15, 10, 15, 15.
Then
Pullups 25/15,5,5,5/15,10/15,10/15,10
Push Jerk 4,3/4,3/4,3/4,3/3,1,2,1

Time 26:14.10

With a bit more practice I'm sure I can push jerk much more weight.

Most of my push jerks were on the push-press side of things. I didn't have to break any sets.

I actually did 2 push jerks at 135lbs but felt really, really shakey. So I scaled down a notch to avoid dumping the weight (I go to one of those gyms where that sort of thing is frowned upon) or hurting myself.

The weird thing is: after doing a few rounds the push jerks got easier. I think my confidence went up and I was concentrating on form. I think I could've went back up to 135lbs. I didn't think of it until I got home. I was working really hard to get a sub-20 minute time and my brain had turned to mush after the second round.

Travis:
100 SDHP's, then:
25 pullups
7 115lb push-jerks
15 pullups
7 115lb push-jerks
Time - 23:10

I don't think I really let my arms recover after I overdid it on the 30 muscle-up workout a few days ago. My biceps were really hurting after the 1st 25 pullups, and was only able to make 15 the second round before complete failure and lots of pain. Tomorrow's rest day is much needed.

Jerry's results were similar, he did about 30 SDHP's, then some pullups, then more SDHP, then pullups, then 7 115lb push-jerks, more pullups, another 7 115lb push-jerks, and finished with pullups. I'm not sure about his numbers and he stopped around 25 minutes.

Working out with a buddy is incredibly motivating, but I've been experiencing some hardcore muscle fatigue since working out with these guys. Hopefully the arms will get some rest over the next few days.

Scaled to 42.5 kg (95 lb) push jerks.

25:30 with approx. 1 minute walk from the rower.

The pull-ups were no good today. The bar was slippery, and I kept loosing my grip. And I felt weak fron the get go. Ripped 3 calluses. Ouch. Need to start using chalk.

The push jerks felt good though, I should probably have used about 50 kg. Unbroken for all rounds.
