This is going to be hell for those of us who are pull up challenged. Still can't wait, though.

I guess the pull up challenged do jumpings pull ups?

one word - brutal!!!

Comment #6 - Posted by: havok at May 17, 2007 8:27 PM

So as soon as you can't do as many pull ups as minutes you have been doing it your are done? Do you have the entire minute to do it or until you fail on a pull up?

Comment #7 - Posted by: Corey at May 17, 2007 8:35 PM

You have the whole minute so if you do 5 chins every 15 seconds you can get 20 at the 20 minute mark.

Comment #8 - Posted by: gaucoin at May 17, 2007 8:37 PM

#6 Corey,

You have the entire minute. Use as many subsets as you need.

Comment #9 - Posted by: Alfie at May 17, 2007 8:38 PM

What are the chances of getting the INFIDEL shirts in sand colored tshirts so us Army soldiers can wear it under our ACUs?

Thanks,

Hee hee. Well no Crossfit for me for a few days as I'm going away, but I don't feel too bad missing this as I challenged myself to do 50 pull-ups (well, chin-ups - overhand pull-ups bother my shoulder) on Tuesday. Took me 22 minutes. :(
Very sore after mind you...

... btw, great informative video again. I'm picking up my new C2 tomorrow. Haven't used one for about 5 years. Can't wait!

Yea, yea, pokin fun at TACP and CCT is all fun and games until air assets are needed in a pinch - then somebody's going to wind up getting an eye poked out. Somebody on the other side.

Granted, the comments about the uniform looking like a bus driver's is tough to counter.........

Really?! I had no idea kipping was expected! That explains a lot of what I've seen on the vids. I guess that applies across the board then? Even with CFWU, and everything else, unless stated otherwise?
Jeesh, that changes things for me.

Total time 23:35

Comment #39 - Posted by: Jorge E at May 18, 2007 2:40 AM

All strict pu's btw since my golds gym dip/pu bar combination stand doesn't really give room to kip...unless I feel like bashing my knees into steel

Comment #40 - Posted by: Mat at May 18, 2007 2:41 AM

14 minutes. All strict pullups until around minute 10. Mix of strict and kipping with broken sets from minute 10 through minute 14. Finished minute 14 with about 1 second left, and there was no gas left in the tank to attempt minute 15. Good WOD!

Comment #41 - Posted by: Chris Stowe at May 18, 2007 3:59 AM

8 rounds + 6 pu:s

Can't kip yet, so all was strict. I suck at pullups, so I'm (believe it or not) pretty pleased with the result.

POST (missed yesterday's wod):
Push-press:

3 x 30 kg
3 x 40 kg
3 x 45 kg
3 x 50 kg
failed at 55 kg
5 x 40 kg

Than I got an unpleasant tingling sensation in my right wrist, so I figured it was time to stop.

13 rounds, 12 reps.

Strange, my sets were unbroken through 12. Then good through 13, then I just died on the 14 minute.

Comment #44 - Posted by: rpo at May 18, 2007 4:23 AM

17 + 6 rounds - kipping pullups done on Jon Gilson's pullup bar; bar set up so it not only swings freely, but it also rotates (I loosened the lowest bolts on the black hanging clips). Tough, but easier on my bandaged palm than fixed bar pullups.

Another continously running clock workout: every 30 seconds do first one then two then three, etc...single arm 52# kb jerks. 8 + 5L matched with 8+ 5 right. 41 each arm.

Comment #45 - Posted by: Kelly Moore at May 18, 2007 4:24 AM

This question wasn't addressed yesterday. Does anybody have an answer?

After Brendan presses out at the top, the position he receives the weight in as he brings it back down to rack looks a lot like muted hip function (pelvis chasing knees). Is this ideal or not? My understanding is that this position is less stable and less powerful; stability being the primary concern for this phase of the movement.

I tend to do the same thing and I've been trying to "fix" it. But maybe I ain't broke and I'd love to here one way or the other.

Thanks!

Comment #68 - Posted by: brendan s at May 18, 2007 6:37 AM

Tim G... not PJ, I am a CCT, a Combat Controller. I will let others clarify if able.
Here is our mission statement:

"Combat Controllers (CCT) are ground combat forces assigned to Special Tactics Squadrons within the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC). The mission of a Combat Controller is to deploy by the most feasible means available into combat and non-permissive environments. Combat Controllers are Special Tactics Operators who establish assault zones, while simultaneously providing; Air Traffic Control, Fire Support and Command and Control communications in the joint arena. Additionally, Combat Controllers expertly employ all-terrain vehicles, amphibious vehicles, weapons and demolitions. Functions include assault zone assessment and establishment; air traffic control; command and control communications; special operations terminal attack control; and removal of obstacles with demolitions. The CCTs provide a unique capability and deploy with joint air and ground forces in the execution of Direct Action, Counter-terrorism, Foreign Internal Defense, Humanitarian Assistance, Special Reconnaissance, Austere Airfield, and Combat Search and Rescue operations."

Robert... no name dropping, Just happened to be at the right place, at the right time.

Actually, to be honest, that plane is humbling. It almost brings a tear to your eye when you look at it and realize who we are and why America kicks ass.

Dale... issue sunglasses??? Whada ya think, I AM IN THE AIR FORCE!!!

Blake... not Andrews AFB

Luke.. exactly, I was like "lets take pics over here out of the way"...then this plane pulled up and lots of people got out and everyone started saluting. So I went over and started kipping off the stairway until I had all these red dots shinning of my uniform.

TreeLizard... Wouldn't you know, I got a new rucksack. I don't climb over barbed-wire usually, if I can cut it.

Thanks everyone for a great cert the other day.

#35 - For the warmup I do a combo of strict and kipping, but unless it specifically says "strict" I always do kipping. It took some getting used to for me but now that I do it I pump out A LOT more pull-ups. I have noticed it has helped me in all the Olympic lifts because I've learned how my body generates power.

From the FAQ:

"Short version: Kipping allows more work to be done in less time, thus increasing power output. It is also a full-body coordination movement when performed correctly, which applies more functionally to real-life application of pulling skills. Last, but not least, the hip motion of an effective kip mirrors the motion of the olympic lifts/kettlebell swings, adding to it's function as a posterior-chain developer."

Off to the gym to get this workout on!

then... 2x45' body weight lunges, 3x30' 40# walking lunges. this was instead of trying to make up the lunges/squats/back ext WOD that i missed. i know, its not the same, but i wanted to hit my lower body a bit today. also, i really want tomorrow off!

Comment #89 - Posted by: Jim D at May 18, 2007 8:21 AM

I was subbing pull ups and dips for the muscle ups earlier this week. As I was getting fatigued, my descent was quicker than normal on my pull ups. I had a stranger come up to me and warn of shoulder trouble. I know that there are often lots of well meaning, but uneducated people in the gym, but is this a concern? I ask as I am about to go do this WOD and try kipping on purpose as opposed to trying to eek out the last few reps of a pull up set. Any feedback from the CF community is appreciated!

Also, the only pull up bar at my gym is a squat rack with an bar set on the top rack position, so pull ups are done with bent legs (for me). So kipping PU's may have to be somewhat modified from the demo.

Day 2 of easing back from the 2 week headache directed 'vacation.'

Did a variation from the Cindy workout:
10 pullups (blue assistance band)
10 pushups
10 abmat situps
15 squats to dynamax ball

Called it good after 10 rounds @ 18:30.

Felt pretty good, didn't push too hard - gotta keep my head from popping off...

The rowing videos are so helpful for improving technique. Two years ago I took a sculling class and learned to my chagrin that I had been doing it all wrong in the gym like 90% of the people who actually use the rower. It's a kickass workout when done with perfect form. Anyway that class taught me the basics. Angela teaches the subtleties that make a huge difference in output. Thank you for the excellent demo.

19 full + 13, this beats the heck out of my old performance on the newer OPT fat bar and is less than an old performance on the padded bar. My 'strategery' was to break up the sets as much as possible and switch grips whenever I needed (I never did more than 5 chins per fraction). I finished my 19th round with about 2 seconds left so round 20 was doomed. I noticed that I need to focus more on my hips whilst kipping to save my grip...

I was all impressed with my results until read that OPT did all rounds straight through until the 17 round. Nice work, homie.

Pre-loooooong CFWU due to severe leg DOMS

Oh, and I have to question #49's (Jay) logic there; I did 203 chin ups in 20 minutes and you did 81 so if volume was your goal you may have missed the point. By my math, you could have achieved over 81 chins total in under 13 minutes so maybe next time you should try it as rx'ed?

Unless it took you 15 seconds to complete each rep...

Failed on Rd 11 (got 10) but in fairness I had to use jumping pull ups for rounds 9 and 10. Deceptively tough than one - a pull up bleep test.

I had been trying to do MU on the bars in the toilets in work all day, nearly there - I think :)

Afterwards I did that 5 sets of 6 minutes rowing with the damper settings as prescribed in May's CFJ - really good fun!

Then a few bench presses because benching solves everything.

Joel #90 - You'll be fine as long as you activate your shoulders (see below)

From "The A-Z Of Pull Up Training by Graham Hayes"
The shoulders are said to be active in the pull up if they are shrugged or "in the ears" at the bottom phase of the pull up, and pulled back as the athlete begins to ascend. Pursuing active use of the shoulders in the pull up gives a longer line of motion thus more work and more power. It facilitates the swing in the kipping pull up, meaning faster cycle time and more pull ups. And also protects the shoulders from the harsh loads that can occur from a plyometric exercise like the kipping pull up.

Do you stay on the bar the entire time? Or can you drop off the bar once you complete the set? Example: 1 pull up - drop off the bar and let the minute finish. Mount the bar again and do 2 pull up - then drop again? etc?

Continued reply to Steve N. comment on shoulders and kipping:
It sounds like you would use the lat to decelerate, or at least take the "impact" at the bottom of the swing. Similar to how if a pitcher in baseball doesn't follow through and have the lat slow his arm down, there is a good (almost guaranteed) chance of serious rotator cuff problems.

Thanks again. I think I'll check that book out.

No problem. The excerpt is actually from a free online guide provided by CF London: http://www.stemlerfit.com/page6.htm
You've got the right idea about pulling with the lats. For strength techniques I highly recommend Pavel's "Naked Warrior". To increase strength and avoid injury, he says corkscrew your shoulders back into their sockets and tense the armpits to transfer stress away from the rotator cuff.

Seriously...what is with all (three posts in the last two days) of my posts getting blocked??? If there is that much of a problem, someone email me and let me know. I am starting to get very discouraged at this "open" forum concept...Mine have all been workout and law enforcement related. How do some of these other ones get through?

Great site! I just found out abou the crossfit system about a week ago, and I studied it a bit before I decided to jump in. I used to be in great shape and used to use a lot of these principles in my own training, but I was severly injuried in a motorcycle accident and spent a year and a half in physical therapy before I could get back to moving around normally. So...2yrs after near death I am building myself back up slowly. See yall up at the top....

CFWU x 2 minus chins

4 rounds of strict chins, then 2 rounds of jumping chins. I had to quit early because I was feeling a sharp strain in my left lower abdomen about 3" above the groin crease. It had been bugging me during WOD chins this week, and it looks like it's not going away until I take a break from exercises that aggravate it. My best guess is that it's an irritated hip flexor.

17 minutes. I was sure I could get 20, then both my hands ripped and that was it for the day. Going to take a little while til my grip doesn't hurt. Might have to use some gloves for a little bit.

Started jumping pull ups from round 8 and continued on till failure.

I thought this wouldn't be enough since pull ups are my weakness, but an hour after the pain started. even with the jumping pull ups, great burn. Keep up the good WOD's.

Ripped open a callus and stopped.

Have to save them somewhat for the Steve Cotter kb seminar

13 rounds or 91 pullups in one day (a PR I believe)
compares well to 6 rounds from last November

I couldn't find a real PU bar around my campus, so I had to use a stair rail, leaving my feet on the ground (kind of an upside down pushup).

19 full rounds, followed by 15 pullups the 20th minute.

BW 176

One of the few WOD's I can do within post-surgery hip resurfacing restrictions:

Fell apart on 12th round. Started to break rounds at round 8. Last time I was 14 rounds plus 13.I've been surprised by how much my pullup ability fell off after 2 months of inactivity.
