about how many lunges is a foot or how many lunges in 100 feet? thought it was about 3 feet per lunge, so 33 lunges?
Cool, I seem to recall this is the first Crossfit I did and I was home on Christmas vacation! Too bad I didn't post, I must have been shy...
Oh, this is going to hurt.
this is going to hurt.
p.s. nice booty grab at the end!
Figures... I get my new bumper plates and barbell stands and I can't even use them tomorrow for the WOD... oh well, this one's gonna hurt without any weight.
no Fran huh, ok ill play your game...
F#&@ yeah squats!
brilliant i can give my wrist a break for a bit longer.. I think this looks deceptively easy. Best of luck everyone
Ref the Gymastics and Tumbling excepts.
As a retired 0-6 (full colonel) in the Air Force with 22 years of active duty service, may I say I am discouraged by the emphasis CrossFit places on militancy. The military is all about war. War is Hell. While sometimes necessary, military solutions should be avoided, if at all possible.
Maslow, whose theories the Air Force accepted in a big way, talked about self-actualization as the highest achievement a person can attain. Would this not be a nobler goal: to excel physically (be-all-that-you-can-be?) rather than preparing to fight an enemy real or imagined?
Groovy song! Definite toe tapper.
Funny....it did not look too cold when they were shooting that WOD video.
Ken,
The fight has already begun, it's too bad many Americans prefer to sit on their collective asses and whine about what is going on in the current state of the union. Better to be prepared to fight an enemy vs. fighting an enemy without having prepared.
The article on G&T was great! Is there going to be a specific exercise that Crossfit suggests for extended warm-up? Maybe have it change each week or something, possibly?
On the WOD: Nice job ladies! I think it was mentioned before, "Deceptively simple" - the skill and strength requirements seem low, but actually it is just the opposite.
I will do this in the morning.

I'm going to save this one from when I can't get to a gym this weekend, and do Monday's, which I missed.
hmm, this is going to be difficult. Can't do walking lunges and back extensions in the same place.. stupid gym has no indoor track. There might be a lot of running up and down stairs to finish this one. Looking forward to it! Biceps chest and tris still burned from dips and pullups.

Ran 4 x 1000 meters prior to the WOD.
Have a good day.
My lower back is still sore from Monday's workout (when I did the Sat workout I missed). That'll teach me not to jump around...
Ken #6 - I agree with your post. While I hope CF can give our fighting men and women (as well as our domestic police, firefighters, EMTs and other public servants) an edge in their work to help save their own lives and the lives of their comrades, most of us will never fight a day in our lives.
I do CF to improve my fitness and health and to improve my self-confidence. Challenging myself physically every day reminds me to challenge myself mentally and spiritually to do what I can to minimize the need for violence.
To those who are serving now... Thank you! I wish we lived in a world where we did not need you to serve in this way. But we do and I thank you for being there.

I noticed in the video that the back extensions were done slowly. What is the reasoning behind this, other than making sure that form is there? Is there concern about kipping/going quickly with this exercise?
Good workout. I'm glad to see that Annie had to take a quick pause with the squats also. Legs were on fire.

Ken #8, as a retired Army Officer with 23 years in Armor and Infantry units I don't see where you get the militancy issue from out of this gymnastics article. I see lots of diverse discussion on everything from fitness to politics on this site, but I think the point of this article and many in the CF Journals is to relook past ideas for fitness and training to better our training techniques. This site has given me plenty of useful training information that I wish I had when I was on active duty, especially when deployed to austere locations.
Keep reading, evaluating and working out here and I think you'll see what I mean.

can't wait to do this one...
when doing lunges, people shouldn't forget to maintain core stabilization throughout the movement and try to avoid breaking at the hips during the concentric portion of the movement [up from the knee down position]. just thought i would throw that in there after watching the video...
Quick questions about the WOD a couple days ago, I'm still catching up.
For the substitutes for the 15 muscle ups.
Is it 15x4 = 60 pullups then 60 dips or rather, 4 pullups + 4 dips x 15 sets?
Thanks

#8 Ken,
tres odd that a full colonel would see what happens here as anything more than the development of the tools needed for survival. It just happens to be that our Military members are in great immediate need of this and we are in support of them.
Gymnastics and Tumbling happens to be a great resource for the instruction of basic gymnastics. The US Air Force recognized this fact in the 1940's and 50's. They've forgotten - we're just remininding them that they were doing it in the first place and getting better results than what they are providing the troops with now!
Out with the new and in with the old.

I have only 8 years in the AF, but let me tell you CrossFit is better then any program the AF is going to provide. The only people in the AF I see who do stuff like this on a regular basis are the combat controllers and pararescue guys. They do stuff like CF or CF itself to be ready. Groups running 6 miles with a telephone pole on their shoulders is what I call intense!
I've done my best to spread CF here at Beale AFB, CA and the following has grown immensely just because it's simple and it works. People are tired of the AF mentality of working out to pass a PT test. The AF is tired of it too now that they'll kick people out who don't get in shape.
Being all you can be is being prepared. Even the Boy Scouts know that, it is their motto. Train to fight, fight to win.
From Hagakure by Yamamoto Tsunetomo:
"There is something which every young samurai should pay attention. During times of peace when listening to stories of battle, one should never say 'In facing such a situation, what would a person do?' Such words are out of the question. How will a man who has doubts even in his own room achieve anything on the battlefield? There is a saying that goes, 'No matter what the circumstances might be, one should be of mind to win. One should be holding the first spear to strike.' Even though you have put your life on the line, there is nothing to be done when the situation doesn't go as planned."
CrossFit is a way to pick up the spear.
WOD: Good music! I can't wait to do this one.

Subbed supermans, and form was generally iffy because of a recent minor knee injury ('twas but a flesh wound).

That book and the sportminded, randomly varied movements of crossfit reminded me of my military movements (Gymnastics) class at "hudson high" and of a quote we had to memorize as plebes...
"Upon the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds, that upon other fields, in other days, will bear the fruits of victory.....Douglas MacArthur"
How much we forget to realize they knew before Muscle Fitness Magazine and Nautilus machines came around.

As a SERE Specialist I fight with the "old Air Force" mentality very day. There are a lot of people in the AF that like to pretend that they aren't in the military, and just because they drop bombs from 30000 feet instead of fire a weapon from 30 that they aren't a part of the fight. Wrong. In many ways we deserve the reputation that we have among the other Services, but the times thay are a changin'
As soon as I can convince my bomber pilots that, yes there is a chance that they can get shot at too. This could take awhile.

#84 - Of course the AF is like that, because we've been formed into a corporation that happens to fly planes and drop bombs (something that has been PC'd as much as possible), as compared to an actual branch of the military that gets dirty and hurts after a long day in the mud.
After reading all of the times posted I thought that I really dogged this one. The I re-read the WOD. Oh well, my back needed it.

While Maslow recognized self-actualization as the highest level of achievement, he also recognized safety and security as among our most basic needs. And he recognized that self actualization includes the acceptance of facts, which would include the fact that there are people who will kill us, but for the deterrence provided by our military.
Signaling our military willingness and readiness to fight for a just cause is an extremely noble act. And I thank and respect you for your contribution in that area.

Thank you. War is Hell. I was in the Army for 12 years. I'm thankful I didn't have to shoot anyone or hold a gun to a grandmother to clear a house. Didn't have my stopwatch today, but it was somewhere in the 12 minute area. Got a back injury from BJJ Monday night, so I took it slow.
I still got 20 minutes of skipping tonight in Muay Thai... then I'm probably going to die during our kick drills.

Which brings me to my next newbie question. :) A lot of these work outs make my lower back really really tight. To the point where some times (like today) I can barely walk after the work out and have to spend some time stretching just to be able to walk to the locker room.
I don't know if this is because I am doing something terribly terribly wrong.
Or....
I'm doing something right and my lower back is just weak and needs to catch up.
Any ideas?
I try my best to use good form and pay close attention to the demo videos... so I don't think I am doing anything wrong. But it sure hurts some times. :)

I am working my way up to doing every WOD (currently doing about half of the WODs that are posted). 202, Brian: Does your back loosen up after you stretch and is just tired sore? If so, it may be some core weakness being exposed by the WOD; if, on the other hand, you're experiencing pain and some limitation of movement, you may have an injury which may require a doctor visit. Be smart, especially with dead lifts and squats. Check your ego at the door and walk out standing straight and tall.

I was a 3 sport athlete in high school; football, wrestling, and track. I now coach all three sports. Needless to say, I never had a break from working out. I have been doing the cross fit workout consistently for about a month. Not knowing what to expect, I feel like I am in almost as good of shape as I was in high school. I actually have been having my athletes do the workout as well, and I've noticed a huge difference in their strength and conditioning. My lifting endurance is about the same as it used to be, but my running endurance still takes a hit every now and then. Especially, on the 10k runs. I am looking to do a triathlon this summer, and cross fit is the perfect workout to get me trained. Thanks guys. Keep up the good work.

Many say that this workout only looks easy on paper. They speak the truth. My first set of lunges felt great, and then the burnination began. I had to squat, pause, squat, repeat. It will be a sweet day when I can do this workout again and energetically pop up and down like the folks in today's video.
First set of lunges were continuous. After that, I generally had to step together between lunges. After the workout, I laid on the floor for a few minutes and then staggered like Bambi out to the car.
Thanks, Coach!

I am very impressed and humbled by the times posted today. It is becoming glaringly obvious to me that I have trouble with the higher rep lower weight exercises. Some of this may be due to my long arm and legs, but a lot of it has to be training with heavy weight and lower reps the last 8 months, until I started Crossfit 3 weeks ago. I supposed the 20 lbs. I put on are not helping, but a lot of that was muscle.
I really love these workouts, it is like nothing I have done before. Todays felt especially helpful in preparing for my week long hike through the Swiss Alps in a month.

Finished the CF cert on Sun. Had a great time learning some new exercises and the reasons behind them. Coach and his staff did a fabulous job. The instruction was excellent. Dont think you will just go there and sit in a classroom the whole time. Be prepared to get after it CF style. This program is perfect if you want to push yourself to a new level everyday. When I was wrestling there was a saying on the wrestling room wall. It said, If what you did yesterday still looks good then you have not done much today. That saying has stuck with me always and pushes me everyday. Thanks Coach and staff.

Did the leg workout. It took me 12,31. Pretty sure i will feel the legs for a few days.
Peace
~10 min flat. (hip extensions, though)
OW my butt!
Oops meant to add that I doubled up and did this after the 7 of 3 push press.
16:31. I was surprised--rather stupidly, since I should know better--how much that lunge/squat combo hurt. I was also surprised how much I felt the back extensions in the squats. You learn something every day. Well, most days. Well, there was that one time. . .
Ken Davis,
I don't know if you're still reading, but I have to say I agree and disagree. I agree that outright war is almost always a result of a failure of some sort--and always hellish--but I disagree in the sense that I believe the failure is almost always one of deterrance, and of failure to wage what we might call sub-critical wars, by which I mean nothing is pressing us into them other an effort to act presciently and preemptively. Wars of that type would include support for "contra" type movements in nations like Iran, informational counter-warfare waged both electronically with actual signals, and through various forms of intellectual infiltration throughout regions where we have people attempting to demonize us. We never have to fight enemies that we don't allow our actual enemies to create through propaganda.
And when we do wage war, the argument Sherman used still holds, that the shorter the war the better, and thus properly waged wars are not for the squeamish, or those overly concerned with the strict rule of law. The corrollary to that is that if fail to do what needs to be done--whether that be shooting insurgents with pork covered bullets, demolishing sections of the countryside, leaving bodies hanging on posts--and we lose, we do not get the moral high ground for having failed to fall fully into brutality. All the bodies that pile up after our failure, all the women who are raped, all the children murdered, all the hell that is still loosed on the earth, that, too is our fault, and if we could have prevented it through what might have amounted to a campaign of terror of our own, then we have in fact failed in our moral responsibilities.
Now, I don't think that's what's needed now, in Iraq, or elsewhere. It would be counterproductive, in all likelihood, at this point. You have to pick the time and place of your battles, but you can't take anything off the table, and whatever, in the end causes the least pain, death, and destruction is, in my view, the moral choice.
ow, i hurt so much. quads and glutes are screaming!

Done at NYSC 76th. Used back ext bench and measured aprox 100 feet. Medicine ball for squat depth.
12:18. Should have been faster. Off night.
9.51 (3.13, 3.14, 3.24). Sub's 40lb GM's for BE's. Done on 5/17.
19:38. REALLY wanted to stop after set 2. Took two minute break and pushed through the third set on sheer will power.
First set end at 4:30 last couple lunges and last few squats tough.
Second set ended at 11:25 last half of lunges and squats killers.
Third set, every movement difficult.

Wow, that fried my legs! Next time less resting during squats...and the last set of lunges could use less rest too! Will try to get in under 10 mins next time.
Should add that after all that, I mowed the lawn...long and wet grass with a push-mower! Then the dogs ran away, so ran like 1/2mi after them! Starting carrying one back on my shoulders (45#)...didn't know I had all that in me, especially after working a 12 night shift!

7:39 - Slower than my previous time on this WOD; stiff and fatigued from yesterday's 20 rep squats with 180# (working to achieve 20 reps with double bodyweight). I could feel the squats getting slower and slower and I could not will my legs to work any faster.
