65 pound barbell Thruster, 15 reps

Yowza, this one is gonna be tough. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if I can set this one up at my hall or not...

Comment #4 - Posted by: gaucoin at May 3, 2007 8:54 PM

Is that 65lbs in each hand? I think I will be scaling this WO. Yikes.

Comment #5 - Posted by: Brian at May 3, 2007 8:55 PM

will definately scale this one to 45# bar plus the jumping pullups....unreal! what an effort! I look forward to the pain.

Thanks again for the video links, they help not only with form but give a great deal of inspiration.

Has CF ever thought of sponsoring some of our beasts to have a try at Japan's "Ninja Warrior"?

If you are not aware, Japan hosts this tournament every 6 months, and it is an impressive, multi-day, 4 stage obstacle course, that usually widdles the initial 100 competitors down to about 15 after the first stage and eventually no one by stage 4. (Only two men have ever completed stage 4 in the 8 years + they've had this show)

The Hamm brothers as well as some other US Olympians have competed...none even making it to stage 3 or 4.

The two sole winners are fishermen.

I watch old episodes daily on G4Tech cable channel. Here's the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninja_Warrior

I think longtime CF fanatics would fair well.

Coach,
The cert seminar at Gagetown this past week was excellent. You and your instructors did an excellent job with a diverse group. Diverse not only in skills but in depth of understanding of how CrossFit is applied.

The CF Journal is a great resource about CrossFit. However, until you have the opportunity to talk through the lift techniques and discuss the application, you may miss some of the finer points of coach's program.

Again coach, thank you, and thank you to the Canadians for hosting and allowing some Marines to join in on the fun. Semper Fidelis

Ever since I started to practice the overhead squat I have this pain deep in my shoulders. It reoccurs only with overhead lifts (like todays thrusters and the push press the other day).
I'm not sure whether it's strain on the shoulderjoints or underlying muscles.

Does this sound familiar to anyone and should I lay off lifting for a while? Or is it just something I have to get through and resolves when my shoulders become stronger?

Scaled to 20 kg thrusters. PU:s was the killer, my grip didn't agree with me and that slowed me down. Had to split the PU:s into sets of 7 reps after only 2 rounds, later on I could only do 4-5 reps at a time.

I got through 6 rounds.

Holy $h** well done in today's WOD video, brings me great inspiration.

I'm a WOD behind. I just had to give Wednesday's a shot today because of how psyched I've been for the DL's; I've been thinking about it for 2 days. The thrusters look sick though, I've never done them before.

Anyhow:

21-15-9 DL @ 135# (up 20# from last week!!)
30-20-10 Full situps (Been working out only 6 weeks, full situps have been a goal for me so this was awesome - nm the GHD's)

Not sure how I'm going to do yardwork tomorrow, I was struggling up the stairs out of the gym lol!

mentally, this was my worst day since starting CF about 6 weeks ago. i didn't want to get up, meandered through my warmup, and reluctantly hit start on my timer. after the first, i swore i wasn't gonna make 5 rounds. 7 rounds, i'll take it -- and the endorphins will carry me through my friday! good luck, everybody!

Although I hate the comments board, because of the partisan nature of rest days, I just had to say this: I had my first Crossfit dream last night -- the WOD was something like an absurd 300,000 crunches. But they were supposed to be "triangular" (which doesn't make sense in the way dreams just don't make sense) leading to a total number of "contact points" (whatever that is) of some huge crazy number, I remember it was in the hundred millions. I stared at the number, let's say it was 132,569,937. (It was something like that.) The idea was we were supposed to count to that huge number while doing these "triangulated" crunches. In the dream, I did about 200 crunches and was exhausted.

Dream interpreters out there -- have fun.

This is supposed to be shoulder set, right? Then why am I still sucking wind? Tricked into doing a metcon workout! (bet our calves will feel it tomorrow.. who opened their trap about that?) Elbow also sore from deadlifting two days ago so really don't want to risk pull ups, especially as even a pull-up with assistance is a major effort for me. 21 jumping pull-ups would probably take me 20 minutes as it is!

Anyone read this? Thoughts? While I do not think CF allows one to hit the same interval valleys to get those heart rate deltas, I would suspect that the varied exercises in a WOD would shift attention to different muscle groups to gain a similar positive "flushing" effect, yes? A huge unit getting ready to do PT in the gym where we were doing the set (you know, the standard unit PT of "do nothing, half-ass crunches, do nothing" intervels), and some of the looks we received were amazing. What was more amazing was being told we needed to move for their "workout" (I told them they could wait 5 more minutes and we'd happily be done).

So, interesting story concerning this morning's workout and certain problems with the standard flock of sheep. This isn't the first time we've had problems doing the WOD of the day in our gym - a few days ago for "Nancy" (on a Sunday morning), we were told we could finish our workout, but weren't to take the weights out of the weight area because of being in others' way (like kids were going to show up and get in our way on a Sunday AM...cute). We have since ignored this dictum.

Today, an entire unit shows up in the morning to do their standard, "sit, struggle with crunches, sit, struggle with pushups, sit" PT intervals and the three of us are in the middle of dying on the thrusters. The unit (of course) doesn't bother to get out of way when we're moving from the thrusters to the pullup bars; instead they either are gawking, socializing (the gym is the one of the best places for that it would seem...I'm surprised we don't have a cafe so people could just sit and talk with a relaxing jazz station playing on the radio), or quietly making fun of our workout (I saw this and it made me mad enough that it helped me catch up with Kimo for the most part...jerk got way ahead on the thrusters, but I fought back on the pullups). I felt like asking the last group if they wanted to do around, but decided I couldn't spare the oxygen at the moment.

First, I was asked by their leader if we could move so they could do "PT". I look at the watch and reply that we have seven minutes left, they can wait: "We won't want to go any longer than that, I promise". Four minutes later, they ask Kimo, who is much nicer than me and to accomodate them, decided to move into the weight room. Instead, I finished my set and then staggered away with the weight and stands we were using at the pullup bar. When I finally left the gym, they were working really hard at doing really bad pushups.

Moral of the story? Kimo and I are building our own gym in the next few years...this is getting ridiculous.

I've been doing CF for a couple of weeks now and am loving it. I feel awesome and I love this different approach to fitness.

However, I've noticed that I've developed a sweet tooth all of a sudden. I normally don't eat much sugar at all, but now I just want donuts and candy. What the hell is wrong with me? Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

I love your idea of setting the bar 9" above your reach, even if it was unintentional. I'll definitely have to try these some day. Is there a name for these? Jump N Pullups? What did you think of doing them this way?

First WOD ever I have been reading for the past week to get a feel for it.

8 rounds 19:38 and 40 jumping jacks to finish of the time, with a slight modification due to lack of a barbell. I used thirty pound dumbbells, so 60# total.

Killer workout, I was pumped!!! Cant wait for more.

I actually felt pretty good on this workout, not like I was going to puke. I think this was the first workout since I started (Monday before last) where I noticed a gain in my anaerobic training. My heart rate was still was up there, about 180 at the end of the thrusters, but I didn't feel like puking. Given another 2 weeks I think I could be over 9 rounds.

Comment #105 - Posted by: Corey at May 4, 2007 11:00 AM

#97 - That was actually a problem I had when I started going to the gym for the first time in my adult life. I curbed it by eating, but not sweets or fruit. I now eat lunch after my workout, about 2 hours after working out drink a whey protein shake, and a couple hours after that eat a protein bar. Gets me to dinner without eating a bunch of unhealthy stuff.

Basically, don't give in to the sweets (unless it is right after your workout and is just a sweet thing, not a sweet and fatting thing) you will just get an insulin spike, burn through the carbs, and then be hungry again 30 mins later.

Well with exactly 2:47 left in my WOD I had 9 rounds and 10 thrusters completed and the stinking tones go off for an MVA but I'm pretty sure at the 'pace' I was going I would have got about 11 rounds even. When I got back from the call I finished it off just so say I did and the count ended up with 11 rounds and 9 chin ups.

I think yesterday's poor eating at the hall may have slowed me down today but I may also require better 'strategery' next time as far as breaking up reps goes. 5-5-5 for thrusters and 11-5-5 for chins worked well in the later rounds, I just need to take shorter breaks.

I swear this city has gone bonkers after just over a day of pissy weather, it's just not right. IT'S ONLY RAIN, CALGARY!!! Try Newfoundland for a week for the love of Pete. I would have got this WOD finished no problem if it wasn't for the little missy in her SUV with the 'Princess' license plate who can't figure out STOP signs.

Yesterday
CFWUx3 (-pull ups, + push ups)
“Nancy”
5 rounds for time:
400m Run
55# OHS, 15 r

Time: 14:29

Finished with: 50 lunges, with two 20# DB overhead

Today:
CFWU x3 (-pull ups)
60# Thruster, 15 r
Jumping pull ups
= 8 Rounds, 15 Thrusters, 6 pull ups

Had a very creative set up for the jumping pull ups. The stools never work because I nearly break my neck on them and they are too high. So, I took what looked like a giant yoga block (it was 3” wide, and maybe 6inches tall) and then stuck a Bosu ball on top of it. The height was perfect. The jumps were interesting and involved some balancing and stabilization. A gym worker came over during this whole thing and said I definitely had some creative set ups for working out.

This week marks my 6 month anniversary with CF. I got certified in March, and hoping by the end of the year, and working in a gym, possibly and affiliate (?).

Kate- I am headed to the beach too, though its actually supposed to be rainy here on the Carolina beaches. Tomorrow is my day off, and I will either get in a run on the beach on Sunday, or 4 rounds: 12 burpees, 24 push ups, 36 squats, 400m run.
Have a fun weekend!

Today: CFWU 3X12 minus pullups
8 rounds in 21 minutes - with 45# barbell.

6+ rounds with mods

Notes: Barbell unavailable. Used 2x30# DBs in rounds 1,2 and 3. Started feeling nerve tingles in right hand so switched to 35# fatbar for rounds 4,5,6 and went with 21 reps on thrusters. About a 40 yard distance betwwen thruster area and pullup bar station, so lost some time running between them. The "+" round was 15 more thrusters with 2x30# DBs; finished at 20:16.

To quote Battlestar Galactica:

FRAK ME!!!

Now I really know that CrossFitters are masochists and the coaches are sadists!

As RX'ed, I made it through all of 4 (yes, only 4) rounds. In fact, my watch alarm sounded on the negative of the 21st jumping PU! I thought for sure I could make at least 5, maybe even 6. Well, something to shoot for the next time, right?

Hey, is the purpose of the jumping PU to do mostly negative PUs? I hope so, because even though the bench I used put the bar higher than the RX'ed "nine inches below your max reach," I jumped "vigorously" enough to only do negatives. I liked it, though, because my biceps are still killing me from Monday's workout.

OK, to repeat. You guys are sadists. I bow (low) to anyone who did 5 or more rounds!

#94 - Keep at it, smile a lot and ask them to come join you. People at our gym here at Beale AFB, CA have learned to get out of our way for the most part.

Luckily for us they have another room for the people you are talking about. Unfortunately there are only 3 pull-up bars and one is in that room and only one of the trainers is nice enough to let us come in to do pull-ups during her class.

I am with you 100%, I've started planning a personal black box gym for myself, and even laid out a plan for a future commercial version based on what I've seen from the other affiliates mixed with my own ideas. I'm almost done with my Master's in Sports Management and have learned alot I would like to apply to the CrossFit mentality and hopefully own a black box, train people and other trainers and do something I will enjoy the rest of my life.

For now I keep on trucking with the WODs.

that is perfectly normal, especially for metcon style workouts. if you watched the WOD vid, you'd see zach collapsing at the end too. and he's a beast!

since you are a beginner tho, i would try to pace myself a little better. you may want to read up on "rhabdomyolysis" as a caveat. you can also try the scaled version of the WOD posted at http://forum.brandxmartialarts.com/viewforum.php?f=16&sid=74059d7b82f8aa7e7fa9cdcec3157228

My personal scale:

45 lb. thrusters, sets of 8
jumping pullups, sets of 10

9 circuits in about 18 minutes. After that, I'd already sucked all the O2 out of the air.

Side benefit - a renewed commitment never to be this out of shape again. Thanks!

I did 7 rounds today in 20 minutes but what is with people saying how many rounds they did PLUS thrusters? Aren't thrusters part of completing one round?

DJ: my stated goal was 7 rounds but my true goal was 50% of DJ...made it!! Strong work, Brother!

Had a "man bites dog" moment in the gym. A gym member came up to me after watching the jumping PU and explained that I may get a better work-out on the Gravitron, and maybe someday be able to do a REAL pull-up if I work really hard on the Gravitron. I started to explain the theory behind JPU but really couldn't breath yet, so I just thanked him profusely for his concern and his advice and wished him a great work-out.

Ain't life grand?!

Pain is good; extreme pain is extremely good! At least that is what I said in my 20's..

I love this stuff!! I have been doing the Crossfit WOD for 5 weeks now (only 15 workouts now that I think about it) -- 3 days a week (M/W/F) with an hour of cardio-kickboxing on T/TH. Over the weekends I usually bike ride or backpack/hike. I am loving it and the changes I feel and am beginning to see. This community seems like a great group of people, no matter our fitness level. Next weekend I am heading to CFHQ for some personal training in the Oly lifts and can't wait to begin including them whenever they pop up on the WOD.

Only 6 rounds as Rx'd then did 20 minute intervals on the recombant That kicked my 244! I thought there would be more people doing this at the Baghdad Embassy gym, especially with all the "operators" around but I still get all kinds of WTF looks. I see from the pic that there's at least one more masochist here. Get some!

A hard fought 7 rounds; I thought double digits was going to be a given.

No pull up bar access (Spring Break crowd) so I used the weight assisted pull up machine. Beer math: 9" reach = 50lb assist.

I'll sound like a real prick but this was easier than I thought it would be. I paced myself too much, and it showed when I started feeling the clock and barrelled through the last two rounds unbroken. The thrusters kicked my ass, but I badly overestimated the jumping pull ups and shouldn't have broken them into sets at first.

-6 rounds plus 10 thrusters
-next time use 45 lbs. bar again but try and do thrusters in unbroken sets...same with jumping pull-ups
-shoot for 9 sets

55lb barbell / 110 lb assist Gravitron Pullups

15 thrusters / 15 pullups (instead of 21)

5 complete sets + 15 thrusters

m/ 30/ 6-2/ 245

7 rounds.

I had to do this at 0630 this morning, which is about 5 hours earlier than normal training time. My body was stiff and sore all over, and I think I tweaked my lower back a little. I hate when my regular schedule gets messed up!
