nice work guys! I can't help but wonder what the random person is thinking as they drive by and see the crossfitters lifting weights then sprinting down the street while being video taped. :-)

Hi Gang!

My gym doesn't have a track and it's on a second floor. I've used the treadmill in the past to run the 400m's. I find that the treadmill takes a little time to get up to speed. Is the treadmill as good as running outside? I feel like I'm cheating.

Comment #6 - Posted by: O Canada at April 27, 2007 8:10 PM

#6
O Canada just leave the treadmill run at the speed you are using when you do your OHS and use a 1% incline to simulate running outside.

Mark, crzay canadian,
use whatever weight you can, be it a broomstick or do 1 arm oh-squats. just do it. treat the oh-sq as a technique session and run like greased ***
have fun, Johan

Comment #21 - Posted by: johannederhof at April 28, 2007 3:06 AM

Well heck. I went into this thinking that I would at least do the same weight. That plan, like many, died upon first contact.

So....WOD as prescribed, regarding exercise and order, EXCEPT:

First 3 rounds OHS: 47lbs
Last 2 rounds OHS: 35lbs

I'm just starting Crossfit. I can do reps with the 95 lbs overhead squat, but not fifteen. Should I am to do as many at 95 as possible, or should I drop to a weight where I can do fifteen?

Comment #24 - Posted by: Em at April 28, 2007 4:10 AM

Alternatively, should I start with 95 and drop weight as needed to finish the set?

Comment #25 - Posted by: Em at April 28, 2007 4:19 AM

CFWU X 3 (no OHS, subbed pushups)

First time with Nancy. Scaled down via BrandX "Buttercups": 3 rnds for time. 400m run, PVC-25# OHS.

rnd 1 400m for 2:15

#5 Crazy Canadian

If you want the intense metabolic effect, I might try front squats (bar racked on shoulders) with rx'd weight.

If you want to work on should rom and OHS form, I'd suggest following Johann's advice and doing OHS with as light a weight as necessary, or just a broomstick.

Awesome video Dave L. and B! I wish I could do one round at that pace.

Feeling much better and less rushed this morning than yesterday...started the workout with the idea of doing a couple "technique" snatch sets but ended up doing a 10 minute set instead. 85L/71R.....hand switch at 6 minutes. Very, very slow pace the first minute of the left hand before I decided to do 10 minutes.

Rest 10 minutes.

6x6L/6R 52# jerks. No rest between hands; one minute break before starting with left hand again. Left side not very coordinated and quickly became fatigued, right side had many more reps remaining.

3x12L/12R 36# jerks. No rest between hands; one minute break between starting with the left hand again.

Beautiful outside....20 minute run, unknown distance.

got off 13 rounds in 20 min on yesterday's workout. UGH.

Question about bumper weight plates---

Are All bumper plates the same size or bigger than a usual 45lb plate.

Example if I just by 1 pair of 45lb/20kg bumper plates will that be sufficient to make the bar that I'm using a "bumper bar"??? Or do I have to by a whole set of bumper plates?

Thanx all who answer.

Thanx also for the great FREE web site.

Not physically capable of doing overhead squats with any weight, my shoulder are so tight my arms have to come forward when I squat. I need to work on flexibility in my shoulders...not a muscle I have ever stretched before.

I am new to crossfit and after watching today's WOD, I have a question about methodology. As a former competitive swimmer, I was trained to try to hit certain splits during a race. This meant holding back at the beginnin of the race to have a strong finish. In the WOD demo the splits for the 400's are 75, 90, 100, 103, 105. During crossfit workouts should you try to make these run splits a little closer (something like 85,90,90,95,85) or just go all out on each individual set within the workout? I guess going all out will jack your heart rate up higher faster. But to get a better time on an overall workout I think holding back would be a better tactic. What's the crossfit thinking on this? Thanks. If this is in the archives somewhere I apologize, but couldn't find it.

21:43 scaled to 75# on the ohs. I'm beginning to love the ohs; there's a "sweet spot" not overhead, but back, but not too far back, where you have the most power and control. After watching the video and then doing the WOD, I'm convinced that Dave and Brendan are supermen. BW:168, Y/A:58

Josh - Your first objective is to complete the workout in as little time as possible (assuming proper form of course). This approach yields the highest average intensity and for most people will require pacing. There is no sense in going all out on the first round only to implode thereafter. Just be careful not to start so slow that you have plenty left in the tank at the end.

Day #2 of bingo's Excellent San Diego Adventure!

Heard at CFSD ystd: "Hey Lisa, I only feel these GHD sit-ups in my glutes and hams." "Wait until tomorrow morning!" Yup, remembered that conversation as I was walking like a crab this morning, unable to straighten either my torso or my legs...

Drove up to Ramona to visit Brand X. Lovely drive on a Saturday. If you make it to SD from out of town there's really no reason not to jump in a car and make the drive. 45 minutes, some of it throught the weirdest terrain this side of Mars. Team WOD today, and Jeff offered to be my partner. KB swings, "Bear Complex", and pull-ups. I'll simply say that it took me 5 minutes to pull myself up to a chair, followed by 20 minutes before I could stand, and another 10 before I could get back in the car for the drive back to the city.

After these two days at CFSD and Brand X I will quote the emininent philosopher, Richard Pryor: ...now I need 8 hours of sleep and a bowl of Wheaties". Many thanks to Jeff, Mikki and all of the BX gang (you too, Laura) for the welcome.

Musings on my CF odyssey tomorrow...

i ran outside what i estimated to be a quarter mile, then went into the gym upstairs to the weights and did the OHS. had to scale it down to 45 lbs cuz my back couldn't handle more.

took me 30 minutes minus the time it took to climb up and down the stairs in the gym between each exercise.

Comment #154 - Posted by: crazyXgerman at April 28, 2007 4:45 PM

Trevor -
OHS grip should be pretty close to your snatch grip. The scarecrow method will give you a good estimation of both: http://www.crossfit.com/mt-archive2/ScarecrowMethod-th.jpg

To test your shoulder flexibility, try the over-under: http://www.t-nation.com/img/photos/06-201-training/image025.png
This stretch will decrease shoulder pain and increase mobility.

Comment #155 - Posted by: Steve N. at April 28, 2007 4:54 PM

Steve #156, thanks, I do recall seeing the scarecrow piece before. The over/under I have seen and attempted before although admittedly not regularly. When reaching up the back with the left and over the top with the right I am about 1" away from touching however not even close with right arm under. I have a slight drop in the right shoulder which has been looked at by chiropractors, physiotherapists etc. and all agree nothing much can be done about it. I'll keep working away at increasing my ROM. More diligent work required on my part.

I just finished "Nancy" and I noticed my left hand started to get numb while doing overhead squats. I've never noticed that before, has anyone else experienced this? Is this normal for your hand to start to numb a little? I'm hoping so. I'm a little worried.

I finished in 29:00. You guys doing it under 15 minutes are monsters. I feel like a girl. I should have warmed up better. It got easier as I went along. And I didn't push myself with the OH as I really couldn't bail out if I messed up because of the setup and the loud noise I'd make.

I didn't have any other appropriate weights available and front squats with kettlebells are harder (balance element), so I decided to go with front squats. I dunno about you guys, but with kettlebells, they make it very hard to breathe as they keep pressing on your core. Nasty stuff! Can't wait to try more.

No WOD today, instead did;
Moved 90 boxes of tile @ 25lbs a piece 25 yards

Need to work more on overhead squat. I think my form is what prevented me from doing the WOD as rx'd. Sore arm and shoulder might have factored into the equation as well because I had to pitch yesterday. Time probably could have been better because I did this 10 minutes after eating a big dinner, but that was the only time I had to do it. Nevertheless, tough workout.

Comment #227 - Posted by: wg at April 29, 2007 6:08 PM

no cfwu in the interet of time, but had been reasonably active all day so was sort of warmed up.

Guessing it took about 3-4 minutes per round, so somewhere between 16 and 20 minutes. Wish I had my stopwatch with me.

used 65lbs in the interest of good form and continuity. Not sure if it was exactly 400m, but it hurt all the same. Awesome workout, will go with 80lbs next time.

All those cleans yesterday didn't help a bit.

To the numb hands guys--I've had that but only at relatively high reps--30+ reps with the bar. I assumed it was just from having my arms overhead for a long time while driving the blood into my legs.

-WOD "Nancy", done on TM and scaled weight to 75# using CFT multiplier (.8 x 95 = 76)

Time: 15:41 - somewhat disappointing, probably could've been faster but the gym attendant guy was on my a** about leaving the treadmill running, so for the last 3 runs I had to start it up each time. I guess some people are dumb enough to just hop on a fast moving conveyor belt without looking, so we've gotta be careful. (rant over)

Then found BP 1RM, got 210 w/ a tiny TINY touch by the spotter, sticking point is midway when triceps take over.

sub'd 2 mins of run in place (knees up), lateral jumps, and bag work for each run.

OHS (15, 15, 15 barely, 8/7, 9,6)

A minute off my best time, but felt good. OHS got deeper as I went in each round. Didn't feel the groove, may have been too wide. Going back for practice.

subbed: 3 rounds of:
600m run

-sub 65lbs for ohs; broken sets on all 5 rounds
-added more than 7 minutes over last time; ohs were only 45lbs last time and the extra 20lbs and multiple broken sets made the major difference

Comment #312 - Posted by: hammy at May 15, 2007 7:11 PM
