Alfie, I agree! Filthy Fifty is probably my least favorite!

Comment #6 - Posted by: Jonathan at January 20, 2007 6:45 PM

I wholeheartedly agree, that's definately the sweetest pic yet!

Comment #7 - Posted by: Raul at January 20, 2007 6:57 PM

Anthony #4,
It is the nature of the lifts that you will make greater gains on squat and DL than press. If not, you would soon be pressing 400#. Which would be pretty sweet.

Bigger lifts, more muscles used = bigger gains. Percentagewise the gains are similar.

Comment #8 - Posted by: Andy Shirley at January 20, 2007 7:09 PM

Butch, what year is this, bro? Let's see some nolie-heelflip-backside-boardslides, kay?

I kid. You're a gnar-dog.

Comment #10 - Posted by: J9 at January 20, 2007 7:57 PM

Last time i did the filthy fifties was the fall and i could still work out outside, one of the big keys is getting all the stuff set-up so you don't need to run from one station to another. i maybe taking my back extension machine to the fire station. This is such a killer workout!

The word gnar-dog is great! Filthy Fifties, I'm gonna have to get my mind right for this. SAINTS!!!!!!!

Comment #13 - Posted by: Jay M at January 20, 2007 8:38 PM

late on posting CFT #'s

21 yo Male / bwt 160#
Squat - 295 (PR up from 275)
DL - 345 (PR up from 325)
Press - 135 (First time doing standing, can do more weight sitting)
Total - 775

Anyways, this is the first post from me although I've been following CF for about a year now. I finally figured to ask the question why Crossfit doesn't implement any swim related workouts? Is it because a pool is not a readily availiable resource for everyone? Or because somehow (I can't imagine how) swimming isn't functional?

I've added a Crossfit-style twist to a lot of my swim workouts and have seen great gains. Just thought others would benefit as well.

Comment #15 - Posted by: Alex at January 20, 2007 9:41 PM

Are you allowed/supposed to break these down like 25 box jumps - 25 kettle bell swings - 25 box jumps - 25 kettlebell swings, etc.?

Comment #16 - Posted by: Nick at January 20, 2007 9:53 PM

#15 Nick-
If you are a complete newbie, either shorten the entire work out down to 25's, or you can do the "Dirty Thirty" and do 30 reps each exercise.
But if you are asking about breaking each exercise down into sets, the answer is no. You start with 50 box jumps and go until you complete the 50, then do the pull ups, then swings, etc. etc. If you can't catch your breath then you take a short break (well, really as long as you need, but we're not talking days or hours here. :)) and get back into it.
Please remember, you are comparing your time to your time.

So what you're saying is... if I keep doing crossfit I'll be able to do handstands on skateboards?.....Well hell...COUNT ME IN!

Comment #18 - Posted by: randy at January 20, 2007 10:15 PM

You are allowed to do it however you want.

If you want to do it as written(as Rx'd) then do it in order, all 50 of one exercise before moving on to the next.

And tell those kids watching to GET OFF MY LAWN!! When I was a kid we didn't have helmets, if we sustained a head injury, then we dealt with it. When I was a kid we didn't have helemts, if we sustined a hed injry we delt with it.Wen I wuz a kid we niblet had melvins. If we mustained a lead gin fury, we melted it. Wait, where am I? I blacked out. The helmets you wear before you get injured are much cooler than the helmets they give you in the hospital to protect the grey lump that used to be your brain, before they had to remove part of your skull to decompress your swelling.

Nice work! Be sure to post it on ystd's comments, too, so you can refer back to it the next time CFT comes up. As far as the swimming, do a search of the Message Board for CF swim work-outs. There was one from CF Santa Cruz (HQ) last month combining 25 M sprints with pool-edge MU. Pools are, in general, scarce and expensive resources. The beauty of CF is that you can design a CF-like work-out for any physical task once you understand the underlying concepts of CF...just like you have for yhour swim sessions!!

It's always great to have someone new posting. Welcome aboard! Fasten your seatbelt...

Comment #31 - Posted by: bingo at January 21, 2007 6:08 AM

That's how Butch skates. He did the physics and figured that the handstand presents less opportunity for brain injuring KE than even sitting on the board.

This is why drunks crawl, right, Danny Silver?

It's all about the met-con suck. Protect your shoulder and choose something fun, and do it 50 times. You can choose to duplicate your subbed version next time for comparison, or do it as Rx'd if you shoulder is better. There are so many exercises here that even the superstars like Kelly find the need to make subs out of necessity. Today, it's all about sharing the pain...

Dont be embarrassed at all mate. You've completed a very difficult work out. Which is more than most of the population have done today.

The standards of the guys (and girls!!) here are very very high and you should in no way be demoralised by what you have achieved.

Stick with it...you'll be amazed how it all comes together.

As a fairly new CrossFitter (started late Nov), I chose to scale using the 'thirty-five to stay alive' mentality. Next time I'll try the 'friggin forties' :)

Age 28
BW 175

35 Box jumps - 20 inch box
35 Jumping pull-ups
35 Dumbell swings - 35lb DB
35 Walking lunge steps
35 Knees to elbows
35 Push press - 45lb bar
35 Standing back extensions - 45lb bar
35 DB Thrusters - 20lb x 2
35 Burpees
35 Double-Unders (didn't count the 10-12 missed attempts or the single-unders)

Time: 29:50 - two minutes faster and had more difficult subs than last time.

I have KB's and Dynamax balls ordered and on their way - next time I won't need to substitute much at all!

Cut the workout towards the end because of time constraints.

subbed 35# DB swing for KB swing
subbed hip raises for KTE - cut to 25
cut to 25 Back extensions
cut Wall ball to 20
cut Burpees to 20
cut Double-unders entirely

quit at 35 minutes

I'm a completist; so I made up the deficit this morning after cycling and light weight training. Did not bother timing it though. Subbed 6 x SU for DU. Have yet to do my first DU.

this time
070127
at home

50 jumps up a berm outside my house - feels like 20"
sub 35# DB swing for KB swing
sub 2x20# DB for 45# push press
sub 20# DB good morning for back extension
sub 2x20# DB thruster for wallball
sub 6xSU for DU

have yet to figure out how to do a DU

couple of distractions but no need to downplay it; it took me forever. Still first time I've even been close to completing this WOD as RX'd. I'm happy to just finish with any time.

Grabbed 3 of my NCOs for their first CrossFit workout.
They accomplished less than 50 for some workouts. I am working them up and trying to keep them motivated without killing them -- but I almost did anyway, but they enjoyed it. This is going to be their PT for the foreseeable future.
Subbed dumbbells for KBs.
Subbed 12 lb ball for wall ball.

Crossfit Emerald Coast
had their first WOD in the park, but it was freakin raining so we did the whole thing under a pavillion, which worked out quite well.
We had three Navy Officers meet up with us to work-out one of which had not yet tasted the kool-aide. I must say they impressed me, they pushed hard and didn't let up, times where extremely good. It is so cool to do these WODs as a group, it pushes everyone!

Times and subs as follows:

LTJG Mark: (EOD) 22:25 subbed 100 reg jump-ropes, 14 lbs med ball, otherwise as rx'ed

Ensign Ryan: (EOD) 25:06 subbed 100 reg jump-ropes 14 lbs med ball, otherwise as rx'ed

Ensign Matt: first timer (Aviator) 28:00 subbed 100 reg jump-ropes, 12lbs med ball, otherwise as rx'ed

...so this family walks into a talent agency and says to the agent, "We've got an incredible act for you--you've got to see it." The talent agent says, "okay, show it to me." So the family proceeds to line up in front of the talent agent and do 50 of the filthiest excercises the agent has ever seen. The father was sweating, the mother was panting, the sister was crying, and the brother was puking by the time it was all over. The talent agent can't believe his eyes--he's never seen anything so horrendous in all his life. The family was swimming in sweat and vomit after doing round after round of these disgusting, filthy excercises. When they are all done, the father is breathing too hard to say much, but between gasps he manages to ask the agent, "Whaddya think?" The agent leans back in his chair and says, "That was truly the most disturbing 36 minutes and 23 seconds I've ever seen. Even if you did sub tuck jumps for double unders and 20 # dumbbell thrusters for wall ball shots. I think there's a real market for this kind of slasher excercise routine. What do you call yourselves?" The father smiles and says, "We call ourselves the aristocrats."

Me: 40yo/M/195#/5'10"

CFWU & then: First Filthy Fifty

49min 31sec

I got every single rep as rx'd and laid on the floor of the gym several times during the fun.

I learned some things:

1. Kness to elbows are difficult. I have never done them and they almost broke my will to fight, almost.
2. Back extensions are easy 15 reps at a time. 50 reps in one shot is a whole different world.
3. I am looking forward to the next filthy fifty so that I can crush my current time.

Have Fun, Train Hard,

Billy

Comment #115 - Posted by: Billy at January 21, 2007 1:47 PM

I still say I love this WOD, but boy did it kill today...
mixed warmup; BW 127

50 box jump 20"
50 jumping pulls
50 DB swings 35#
50 lunge steps
50 K to E
50 push press
50 wallball 12# (switched order due to someone on ext.)
50 back extensions (true BE, not hip ext. like I've always done)
50 burpees
50 double-unders

39:22, compare to 38:35 before. Off my best time, but I did the back ext. correctly per the latest video rather than hip ext. as I had previously done. Also wall ball after push press sucked horribly. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

50 steps walking lunge

50 push press, 45 lb bar, sets of 25
50 back extensions, no weight in my weakened clutches
50 wall shots with 12-lb med ball (heaviest they have), off the only non-mirrored wall in the gym, think the stucco damaged the ball, sets of 25
50 burpees (sets of 6, omg these wind me so quickly)
50 tuck jumps, still can't do double unders (sets of 10, then 6, then finished strong with 10)

50 Jumping pull-ups (broken)
50 Kettlebell swings, 1 pood (35#DB) (unbroken)
Walking Lunge, 50 steps (unbroken)
50 Knees to elbows (very broken)
50 Push press, 45 pounds (broken 25-25)
50 Back extensions (unbroken)
50 Wall ball shots, 20 pound ball (subbed 45# bar thrusters) (broken into 10's)
50 Burpees (extremely broken)
50 Double unders (can't jump rope, subbed box jumps, broken 17, 17, 16)

Time 56 minutes, the same as last time, when my excuse was that I had a cold. My excuse this time: my warm-up included a lot of pushups, which absolutely killed me during burpees.

My reaction to all the great times posted: I am not worthy!

3D RECON BATTALION, PARACHUTE RIGGERS
OKINAWA, JAPAN

Due to computer problems, I only had a couple minutes to figure out some suitable subs after looking up the WOD before we had to get moving this morning. Here's what we ended up with:

50 Star Jumps (sub'd for box jump)
50 Pullups
50 Kettlebell Swings
Walking Lunge, 50 Steps
50 Knees to Elbows
50 Push Presses
50 Back Extensions
50 Burpees

Couldn't think of a good sub for Wall Ball and Double Unders - anybody have any ideas? We are often unable to use the gym, or at least some of the equipment, so we need to improvise a lot.

Our times obviously reflect the omission of wall balls and D/U's.

20" box, 50 total steps (25 each side), 12 lb ball, 100 unders (couldn't get the coordination down to do more than two doubles in a row). KTE sucked bad. Burpees very slow. Pukie was nearby but didn't say hello.

Comment #155 - Posted by: JP at January 21, 2007 3:52 PM

how are people doing the jumping pullups. Previously I had always just jumped to a pullup bar and pulled. Then I looked at the jumping pull ups on the exercise links and it was different.
I liked the video version as i helps with kipping practice.

just curious.

60, BWT 283. Progress, progress, progress! Last time: all 25's, time :41. THIS TIME:
50 Box jump, weight bench
50 Jumping pull-ups
50 Kettlebell swings, 1 pood (subbed 35 lb DB)
Walking Lunge, 50 steps
50 Knees to elbows (only got a bit above horizontal-too much gut!)
50 Push press, 45 pounds
50 Back extensions
50 Wall ball shots, 20 pound ball(subbed 2x10 DB thrusters)
50 Burpees None- muscle failure after 2
50 Double unders-single jumps (yet)
Time 1:02:30
First time I ever (almost) finished the Filthies-I guess I've still got a ways to go. I hate Burpees!

Comment #158 - Posted by: peejay2 at January 21, 2007 4:06 PM

as Rx'd - first time doing full 50 reps

38:53 - lots of breaks, felt like going to puke, knees to elbows worst

Comment #159 - Posted by: alan f at January 21, 2007 4:07 PM

PK #149 can anyone describe the correct way to do jumping pull-ups/burpees/double unders?

i'll give it a shot:
Jumping pull-ups; use the momentum from jumping to assist you in the movement. As opposed to 'dead hang' pull-ups.
Burpees; from a standing position squat down and put your hands shoulder width apart on the floor, move your weight to your hands and kick your legs back into a push-up position, do a push-up, bring your legs back to a squat position then jump up and clap your hands above your head. THATS 1!
Some people yell "HooYa' as they clap.
Double under is jumping rope where the rope makes two passes under your feet for every jump. Jump long and move the rope FAST.

have fun!!!

Couldn't do this one because of a bad cold, just getting to do Cindy on Saturday, and poor setup at my gym. Did an interval workout on treadmill instead:

1/2 mi w/u
5 x 1/2 mile intervals at 9.0 mph
1/2 mi cool down
stretching and a set of 15 pullups for good measure

total distance 4.65 mi at 1% incline, approx. 42 min.

Comment #233 - Posted by: Chris M at January 22, 2007 8:43 AM

Scaled version: 20 each + 20 pushups; 22:00 min.
(Wasted lots of time going back and forth across the huge and mostly useless McGym. It seems like most people are taking naps on the machines. And they have the largest cardio dept in Utah, and not one single rower! Next time I'll use my garage gym. I just won't get to show off my new muscles to anyone else!)

I misread my time yesterday and didn't notice it until today when N & L went to do their workout.
Mistook the 9 for a 0 so really my time was 49:20.

They did the Dirty 30 with following subs-
15 lb DB swings
jumping K2E
25 lb push press
good mornings
8 lb wall ball
L did squat jumps with pushups instead of Burpees
All else was as Rx'd
