Been away from Crossfit Flagstaff and have not yet acquired and free weights (will this weekend, yahoo!) so I'm fired up to have a body weight workout... or is it? Are these one legged squats (AKA pistols?) Rx'ed without weight? The vast majority of the pictures I've seen have been with weight.

Comment #1 - Posted by: Jerimiah at January 17, 2007 6:15 PM

This is the 2nd time in as many weeks where we have seen a video involving burpees to muscle-ups.

Hmmmm.......

Comment #2 - Posted by: Clippa at January 17, 2007 6:18 PM

Regular air squats jerimiah, no weight, only pistols if you do mary.

Comment #3 - Posted by: Travis L @ Home at January 17, 2007 6:19 PM

Thanks for the reply Travis. I could have been more clear: are the pistols of Mary w/o weight?

Comment #4 - Posted by: Jerimiah at January 17, 2007 6:22 PM

I love Burpees!! That picture is amazing. How did you get it with everyone off the ground??

Comment #5 - Posted by: Dutch at January 17, 2007 6:28 PM

#4 Jerimiah- yes, no weights

Comment #6 - Posted by: J9 at January 17, 2007 6:59 PM

Dutch, you love Burpees? I'm pretty sure they where created for torture only, not enjoyment. Are you sure you are doing them correctly, because when I do them I am in pain?

Comment #7 - Posted by: gaucoin at January 17, 2007 7:00 PM

I remember that a long time ago Coach was musing about doing away with burpees because of the jumping into flexion aspect. I see that they're still around...did he ever explain what led him to decide to keep them?

Comment #8 - Posted by: David at January 17, 2007 7:09 PM

The pain feels so good!! So you can check my form...

Comment #11 - Posted by: Duff at January 17, 2007 7:23 PM

Dutch

those are some rediculously good burpees!
totally fluid...wow man

I need to get more comfortable with falling on the ground that fast

Comment #12 - Posted by: Anthony from Ottawa at January 17, 2007 7:25 PM

I realize that posters generally hate people who get off topic (this relates to the burpee video, not the WOD), so if you're one of those people then disregard this.

I've never seen crossfit advocate or mention 'burcleans' or 'bursnatches'- where you address a barbell as if cleaning/snatching, do the push up part of the burpee with both hands on the barbell, keep them on the barbell for the squat, then substitute a clean or a snatch for the jump- give 'em a try- I love 'em.

Comment #13 - Posted by: Mike G at January 17, 2007 7:28 PM

I like to think it is athletic ability, but it could be stupidity. haha. Thanks for the kind words.

Comment #14 - Posted by: Dutch at January 17, 2007 7:29 PM

would anyone comment on how crossfit has improved their PT, PRT, PAST, etc. scores? I can see how it definitely builds up the pullups....how about max pushups and situps?

It is the CF warm up. Check the FAQ, it is full of useful info.

I will be doing Cindy at the gym tommorrow. I can't wait for the funny looks and comments on my intensity. Love this stuff!!

Jeremy (comment #10)

read up, bro!

(from the FAQ)
1.8. What's the "official" CrossFit warmup?
The "official" CrossFit Warm-up is in the April 2003 CrossFit Journal.

3 rounds of 10-15 reps of
Samson Stretch (do the Samson Stretch once each round for 15-30 seconds)
Overhead Squat with broomstick
Sit-up
Back-extension
Pull-up
Dip
Note that for a workout that's dip or pullup-centric, you might want to do something else in the warmup.

Comment #24 - Posted by: rob at January 17, 2007 8:43 PM

I know this is a little off topic but is there a good way to develop a muscle up? I have been trying to do them for a while and I can't get my elbows over. I can do pull ups and dips pretty good but what gets me is the conversion from the up pullup position to the dip down position. Thanks.

Comment #25 - Posted by: john at January 17, 2007 8:48 PM

#8 david - I posted this same question on Eva's site (about burpees). I believe Coach said he kept them only because they seemed to be so popular. I remember the comments as well, but I'm unsure if they were on the board or on a WoD comments section. I find I have lower back pain if I do a lot of burpees, so I may pass on them in the future and do them only for the Filthy Fifty or some other "special workout".

Comment #26 - Posted by: Dale Saran at January 17, 2007 8:54 PM

We sometimes have our athletes do burpees to a dumbell height. They do their bends and thrusts off of the DB's and don't have to flex the lower back as much. The push ups are nice and deep with the DB's too. Just one option.

Comment #27 - Posted by: steve hb at January 17, 2007 9:04 PM

I just bought a new Mac and I cant open the videos what application should I use? Thanks

Comment #28 - Posted by: matt at January 17, 2007 9:13 PM

Comment #25: John. Try lowering the rings so when you stand up straight your hands are below the transition point. Then just use your legs to help you through the transition. Worked wonders for me.

Comment #28: Matt. Go to microsoft.com/mac and look around for Windows Media Player for Mac OS X and download it. You should be good to go.

First time with Cindy: 20 rounds as RX'd

No broken sets, all pullups kipping varied grip from set to set.

Surprised myself, but had nothing left in the tank on last round with 13 seconds left on the clock. But that's the goal, right?

Week six of CF, I love this stuff.

I'm pretty annoyed at myself for missing yesterdays WOD too. I'll have to add it on sometime, but the WOD's, just as they are, are tough enough!!

#15 gundy,
My PRT run dropped 30 seconds (1.5 mi) between Apr 06 and Oct 06. My pushups and situps I already maxed out but the pushups were easier. Situps still suck. During this time Crossfit became my exclusive interval and strength training program. When I tested myself on the SWCC PRT my pullups went from 15-16 deadhang to 20. Off to the Chief exam wish me luck. V/R Bob

Full extension pull-ups with as much kip as I could muster

Big Cindy: Cindy with 15# Xvest. Bwt 114#

24 rounds + 5 pullups/6 pushups

All movements full ROM....pullups and squats stayed stronge with no breaks; pushups became the problem. I had to do the old "kneel, pause and return" break once during each pushup set starting at the 19th round. The reps didn't count if I didn't touch the vest to the desk, maintain full plank and have elbow extension at the top.

I was aiming for better than 25 rounds with the vest - next time.

Hello X-Fitters-
Cindy: 20 Rounds of heaving joy.

Changed my name from Ant Chick (capable of lifting and tranporting more than her body weight) to Spider Chick (capable of spinning webs and catching terrorists just like flies). The occasion for the name change? I just did my first rope climb to the gym rafters last night. IT WAS AWESOME!! Coach hung a rope, I had been dreaming of this moment for quite awhile, and I threw myself at the line and just scrambled right up. Did it again another 5 times just to re-live the fear & accompanying adrenaline rush... it would have been a long fall or wicked rope burn if I messed up. Almost as much fun as a girl gets from a near miss in a car crash.

Now to conquer my remaining 2 X-Fit goals for 007: the to-the-floor HSPU and the muscle up. Just got notified that my rings are in FedEx's hands and on their merry way.

18th day of Zone. Dang. Huge difference. Highly recommended. Not grouchy or hungry any more either. Just got more muscles and less body fat. Workouts still strong too. Happy 40/30/30 to you all.

And, as for #13, Mike G... I LOVE to mix my burpees with a DB clean and whatever. Got a fun idea for you: try a Turkish Get Down. Put together a burpee, a clean and press, and a Turkish Get Up. Oh, the delicious agony you can build up in almost no time. And, it confuses the heck out of everyone else at the gym, which I confess, gives me a giggle.

#15, Gundy, my USAF PT scores went from top in my age group to top period. Situps are restful for me. Pushups went faster and way easier too. Keep it up, you'll see on your next PT test. Of course, the USAF PT test is a total joke and I should probably shut up now.

Have a Happy Air Force Day and Semper CrossFit-

I've missed a few workouts because of holiday illness and a Fiesta Bowl trip (Boise State baby!) but the workouts have deffinatly made me stronger and better conditioned, so this should be a great indicator of progress. I'm a week behind in the workouts however so I will post results then. I've been looking forward to this the moment ever since I wrote down that first score. :)

Wow, my bud and I are slackers. 8 rounds and whipped.

I did a "Mandy" - 5 HSPU, 10 PU, 15 air squats. Scratched and clawed and jumped and whatever for more than half of the pu, but you have to start somewhere. I'm looking to do Helen again tomorrow ... I'm liking being in the 'can't get enough stage.'

Did not workout in past 11 days due to illness, and still not 100%. I felt it, struggled, and could only complete 11 rounds of Cindy in 17 minutes. Couldn't go any further. Now just looking to get back in the groove and get healthy again.

After doing cleans last night it raised some questions. I never really did cleans until starting Crossfit, so this may just be due to poor form.
When doing light weight and when warming up, I try to do more of a squat clean. But last night, when getting to my heavier weights, I did not have to drop that much to catch the bar. (This is not the case with Hang Cleans, when I really have to drop to catch the bar.)
Should there be any pull up at the top before the catch, or should I emphasize dropping under the bar to catch it? I don't think I was using my arms much because they aren't sore at all, but my legs are. Any recommended exercises to ensure proper form? Thanks.

18 full Cindys plus 7 push ups, a few rounds less than last time I dated her. Quite unsatisfied with this today as I wanted to set a 'Cindy Standard' for myself for 2007 and then go back to Mary. The Tabata push ups I did yesterday really slowed my performance of said exercise today because my chins and squats were solid. I used to have to fraction my squats in the higher rounds but now I just bomb through them whereas the push ups are fractioned still.

On a happier note, I practiced pistols after and did my first real one with my foot flat on the floor and my butt touching my calf.

14 rounds even / I had about 10 seconds left so I just looked at the bar and laughed (used jumping pullups after about the first 5 rounds)

I learned something while is was training with Cindy that others may find helpful. I was holding my breath on the way up on my pullups. When I focused on breathing through the entire rep my splits actually got faster. I hope that this helps someone else. Next Cindy I would like to complete 18 rounds.

Had to wait in line for the pullup bar a little, but we're all smoked! Great WOD!

FYI, for those who read the articles about the Canadian military's evaluation of CrossFit, you probably saw the 9-week series of WOD's that Coach put together for them. We're going to start that next week after taking a PFT, etc, to get a baseline on our fitness levels. We'll let you know how it goes!

We've been doing CrossFit for just a couple months now, but we're seeing great results. It looks like the USMC is going to make sweeping changes in our PT program, centered around a CrossFit-style "Functional Fitness" regimen. Unfortunately, there's not a single gym on Okinawa that's got Olympic-style weights, kettlebells, rings, or many of the other apparatus that we need. But with a few ammo cans filled with sand, and some ingenuity, we're making do!

Just wanted to tell you all that Painstorm XIX was brutal last night.

As many rounds as possible in 40 minutes:

All with 70#
5 deadlift; 5 hang power clean; 5 front squat; 5 push press; 5 back squat

I got 17 rounds, then laid down next to the power rack for ten minutes, sweating all over the floor.

mary 19 rounds

the way I keep count is I take 20 rolled up pieces of paper and put them in a hat and after I finish a round I throw one out...got done with my last round with 8 seconds left on the clock...I looked down and saw 2 pieces of paper left in the hat and was mad...then I realized I didn't take my last piece out. Very pumped.

8 rounds of Mary, unassisted HSPUs for first 5 rounds (this is new for me).

If I'd hurried up a little bit instead of slacking through it, I think I could get 9-10 rounds. Will have to keep this in mind next time as a goal.

Still pleased with the progress.

Comment #212 - Posted by: Tim T at January 18, 2007 5:31 PM

bridges, OPT, mrjing -- you guys are animals. I would be seriously concerned about my meniscus if I did pistols fast enough to compare with those times. Probably you're all a lot more explosive than I am when it comes to HSPUs. I really need to work on that.

In any event, much respect to anyone doing >10rds with Mary. It always looks much easier on paper :-)

First Mary ever

And I influenced someone to not use that stupid Blue Manta Ray, for squats.

Anyways, was going for 7 rounds... with assisted Handstand push ups (put my feet up on the smith machine bar, the only use I have for it.)

Finished 8!...(had to wait for pull-up bar a lot... hurt time a bit)
Found that my Handstand pushups were too easy (at the start) so I put the bar up gradually through the cycles and the bar ended up on the top rung, with a pretty wicked balancing act needed.

I also found out that I can do One-legged squats without support. Right-leg is pretty good and is a little below parallel. Still working on the left leg, can get to parallel but gets a little shaky underneath.

Thank you, CapitalCrossfit for taking me out of my comfort zone, by doing Mary.

All pull-ups kipped except for 6th round where they were "almost" dead chin-ups
(first 5 rounds palms forward, next 3 were palms back (palm back is still stronger than palms forward, even though I practice the latter everyday...))

"Cindy"
17 rounds. Avg HR 153. Push-ups are the limiting factor. After 13 rounds, pushups became broken sets of about 6-4 or 7-3.

Comment #308 - Posted by: hoddy2000 at January 19, 2007 10:31 AM

did 16 rounds, plus 5 pull up's,10 push up's, and 2 squats. Did modified pull up's with feet on a bench in front of me. Still working on Pull-up #'s.

First time trying 'Cindy'...was only able to complete 9 rounds with 57sec still on the clock. Pull-ups were the definate weak point as was overall cardio as it neared the end.

Comment #312 - Posted by: David P at January 19, 2007 11:00 AM

21 rounds as rxed. Not my best effort but felt good.
I like that Jack Bauer WOD.

Cindy: 10 rounds. aiming for 25 some day!

It amazes me that the US military can't afford to buy decent exercise equipment for 'pointy-end' guys on Okinawa. And yet the Boeing contractors always wear nice suits!

7 PU's short of 18 rounds
Pull-ups limited me today. Pull was a little weak. Hand tore in 15 round and had to finish pulling from the fingers. Otherwise, better than last, so I will take it.

I'm in my first year at the Naval Academy...I'll graduate in 2010 and I want to go USMC - so why not start getting in crossfit shape now?

...had the privilege and honor of working under coach burgener at RBVHS throughout most of high school...first time doing crossfit online workout (recommended by one of the USNA class of 2007 who will be a Navy SEAL after graduation )

age 18, bw~140

"Cindy"
17 rounds + 5 pullups
I did jump pull-ups...and just regular air squats

Awesome workout. It's fun being one of the few girls in the weight room with sweat pouring down your face and your breathing all rough b/c you're working hard..."born again hard" as coach used to say.
OORAH.
