First crossfit workout ever, and did it Thurs. night because that's my "me" time.

6 rounds, and the pull-ups got pretty sketchy by the end. Long ways to go, but looking forward to it :)

I think I may go for Mary this time. I was hoping we would have something I could use my new bar on, guess it'll have to weight.

One question when is crossfit seminar comming to Australia. Awsome video

Post results later today for 'Mary'

Comment #11 - Posted by: Sam at December 14, 2006 7:11 PM

I concur with your comments Sam #11. Crossfit seminar down under would be sensational. Even if it was over east, I could justify a flight over there to the other half. Flight to the US a bit harder to get past her!

Comment #12 - Posted by: Duck at December 14, 2006 7:50 PM

Hip Rob,
Thanks for a fun weekend. I hope I'm in your group at the next cert.

Sam #11 is correct. An Australian seminar would be great! Melbourne please ;)

My best previous Cindy was 10 rounds. However I hadnt mastered kipping then. I have mastered kipping now though and am expecting a big PB.

I did Cindy on the Saturday before last. I got 11 rounds. I had to go to box pushups in round 6.

It's 3 rounds more than last time. But I think I stuck with floor push ups that time.

Comment #21 - Posted by: Nolan at December 15, 2006 1:30 AM

Coach,
Thanks for bringing Crossfit. During my after Cindy stupor (27 rnds + 5 Pull-ups), I was thinking how this is vital to my DT training and the training I give my department. One of the many factors for escalation in use of force is exhaustion. I believe that it is vital for our officers to increase their level of exhaustion and also recognize when they are going to reach that point, and how to push past it. Also, since we are public safety (fire and police), this obviously applies to the firefighting side also. Awesome program! I hope to find a way to make it to Ann Arbor.

Had a superb PB today!

Both PJ and Glen did 29 rounds! It is great to have someone right next to you pushing. When one would go ahead the other would push to catch up and not fall behind.

Squats to bench, pull-ups kipped.

Feeling exhausted by proud at the same time.

Question - What do you do if you can't maintain the rep count on one of the exercises? For example, in Cindy, what if I can't keep up sets of 5 pull-ups? Do I do as many as I can and move on to the next exercise, or do I do as many as I can, rest and do some more, rest, do some more, etc., until I reach the prescribed reps before moving on to the next exercise?

Comment #31 - Posted by: johnny at December 15, 2006 4:16 AM

145lbs/29yoa

CFWU x 3 (modified)

"Cindy/Mary"

I did "Cindy" (settle down) but subbed the HSPUs from "Mary" for the 10 push-ups. I did this because my 1RM Press from the CF Total was lame and I wanted to work on more pressing strength.

5 pullups (overhand, strict form)
10 Handstand Pullups (feet on squat rack bar, 70-80 degrees?)
15 squats (butt to med ball)

Total Rounds: 17 in 19:54 (took the last 6 seconds to stumble 3 feet to my water)

None of the sets were broken, although the last 3 sets of HSPUs were a bee-otch and therefore lacking great form.

Good workout

Warmup- 4 mi run. I am in the Army (Airborne!!) So I couldn't get away from PT.

Cindy as Rx'd-12 rounds. I was good for the first eleven, but I sucked on keeping the reps on the last two. Paid attention to strict form for quality.

Signing out on leave today, but will continue to Crossfit!!

I have a question along the same lines as comment #19. With alternating one leg squat is it 10 total or 10 each leg? A little explanation of the tech would be nice as well. Thanks

Been doing crossfit for about 3 months now - Absolutely Love It!!!!!!!!!

Comment #36 - Posted by: Jarrett at December 15, 2006 4:43 AM

#31 Johnny, do what you stated second, i.e., break the individual sets of pulls into blocks of 4-1, 3-2, 1-1-1-1-1 or whatever. Don't proceed until you finish all five. Same for the other exercises.

#19 Jay M. Pistols are done with one leg extended to the front, arms extended toward front, pull down into full squat position, then stand up. If your like me, initially you'll need to do these next to something that you can grab for balance and/or assistance. Alternate legs for 10 reps total.

Kelly M, awesome score and inspirational as always. PJ and Glen, also awesome!

Funny....I didn't take a rest day yesterday and did a modified Cindy:

10PU
10dips
10 30" box jumps
For max reps 20 min. .....and lo and behold ...more Cindy
I think the Coach is on to me....

I am trying like hell to get to the Raleigh seminar. If anyone would like to sponsor a broke scientist..... My "will squat for crossfit seminar cash" is not really pulling in the numbers I expected. Donations in small unmarked US or Euros greatly appreciated. I will bring crossfit to Richmond if it kills me.

I have been having achilles tendon pain lately since I started Crossfit several weeks ago. I find it goes away (for the most part) when there are no WOD with squats.
Is this possibly a technique problem or does anyone know what i can do to help fix the problem (similar problems for anyone else)?

Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Figured this would be "cake". Nope. Who would have guessed this was a cardio workout?

Was doing a round a minute for the first 5 minutes, then started slowing dow. By round 9, my form was suffering and breaking down a little bit.

All together?

12 rounds.

Will do better next time. Best part: only had one broken set of pull-ups, ad for the most part, did this..

Cindy- 24 rnds and 5 pull-ups, all pull-ups dead hang (my Marine work-out partner won't do kips, so tried to keep it even).
Then did bottom-to-bottom Tabata squats (hope that wasn't a mistake), and medicine ball wheel.

Just a postscript.I really flowed today and so carried on for another 10 minutes ,hence the high number of rounds. This may only happen occasionally but it is a good feeling.Of course it could just be the result of following Crossfit for a while.

First time trying Mary today- 9 rounds full rounds + 5 hspu's + 10 pistols then collasped.
(hspu's one foot on squat rack, other straight up in air, pistols assisted to parallel, kipping pull ups)
Much harder than cindy imho (15 rounds PR last time), those pistols hurt so good! I thought I was in really good shape until I started doing crossfit. Stopped "bodybuilding" style lifting for crossfit about two months ago and haven't looked back. I'm hooked.

Mary Mary, where you going to?

10 full rounds plus 5 HSPU and 1 pistol, almost one full round more than last time BUT my pistols are better. Previously I was lowering my butt to an 8" bench, today I just elevated my heels and went all the way down so they were harder to do.

Today's version of Mary actually felt more metabolically taxing than the previous ones because I'm getting faster now. Good times.

Today 15 rounds + 2 pull-ups

strict pull-ups till round 6, then kipping,
all pushups chest to floor and full ext.
squats were all ATA and full ext.

only sets of push-ups were broken(from 10th round and on)

I tried to "stratecise" with Cindy by starting each round on the minute. Only lasted 5 rounds like that. Never took longer than 30 second breather and last 3 rounds were continuous to beat last time I did Cindy.

Cindy, 18 rounds + 5 pullups + 9 pushups. 5 pullups + 9 pushups better than last time. I'm still using an interval timer set to 20 1-minute intervals, but this time I didn't rest out the full minute on the early rounds, rather only about 5-8 seconds. It seemed to make at least some difference.

Fat Cindy (w/25# plate in a knapsack):14+5 pu's. I belted the knapsack to my torso to enable me to kip without smashing the plate into my back, but the pushups, just on general fatigue grounds, became a chore. For some reason, Cindy is one of the few CF WOD's that seems to match my small skill set, so make it harder and go again! Thanks, Coach! BW:176, YOA:58

22 rounds plus 5 pullups and 10 pushups. In-line with prior PR of 22. Was shooting for 23 but ran out of gas after setting a torrid pace up until the halfway mark. I'll take it given moderate fatigue.

Also saw a trainer today getting a client to use the cable crossover machine to basically do thrusters. I'm thinking, why not just thrusters?

4 - kbell right arm snatch
5 - kbell goblet squat

Rotation C (65lb 1st time, 45 second time)

2 - sumo deadlift high pull
3 - split jerk
4 - power clean
5 - thruster

Rotation D

Did this one Chelsea style. Pull-ups ( all strict dead hangers) started to fail so called it after 10 rounds in 10 mins with 35 seconds per round. So this workout and maybe some ring tricks with 300% improvement will get me to Level III. How does one go about getting their level certified anyway?

Steven Jr. (#211)

A superman is a back extension done on the floor. Begin by laying down on the floor with your stomach to the floor and arms straight ahead and try to lift your arms and chest away from the floor as much as you can and hold it there for about a second before going back down to the starting position. Imagine that you are superman and you are flying.

Didn't do the workout. I did the Cinco de Mayo yesterday (made a pair of 70's, with some grunting), and will do 8 or so hard miles tomorrow with a pack. I say that, just to justify commenting on a non-Rest Day.

I have often found it difficult finding food in even Mexican and Indian Restaurants that is hot enough for me. I drink espresso black with no sugar, and when I take aspirin, I pour the powder on my tongue. There's just a part of me that likes stuff pure, and unadulterated.

In round 4 of those bottom to bottom Tabatas, I found myself smiling. I don't know why. I've been through them before, and that is the most painful physical thing I've ever done. I had been dreading them all week. But a beautiful thing about CrossFit, is it pulls out of you this energy, this cloud, that resists pain, and pushes back. I'd like to thank Coach for not compromising.

Doh, make the height in my last post 5 ft 11. Typo!
Started out feeling great and had 12 rounds at 10 mins, did only half as many in final 10 mins. I just couldn't help myself; the adreneline got the better of me.

I knew I have been slacking at my PT for the last five years because none of my workouts made me want to puke or filled me with that little thrill of fear prior to doing them. None gave me that jagged adreneline rush that leaves you shaking but happy at the end of the workout. You know, that feeling where you are slightly achey and fatigued, maybe a little off balance and your head is buzzing, but you have the satisfaction of knowing you really pushed yourself? Well, it has been missing from my life the last 5 years but Crossfit has brought it back. Thanks Barry Cooper for introducing me to Cross Fit. Thanks Coach for envisioning this system.

compare to last time 21 + 5 pull, but this time I focused on perfect form, making sure my chin was fully over the bar on pullups and doing full pushups. Not to say my form was bad before, but I think the best way for me to really work this WOD is to do it with perfect form and not slack at all. It was much harder to get the rounds done than last time.

(May have been 16+5, cause I kind of forgot whether I marked a round. For the sake of conservatism, I am only claiming 15+5.)

Cindy was the first workout I ever did on Crossfit back on 10/25/06. I beat that by 3 full rounds exactly (12 rounds +5 pull-ups). Not bad, but my goal was 18 rounds.
In all my griping about my lack of cardio progress, I can tell by this workout it has definitely improved. Still a ways to go though.

Just a note, amazing how much worse 175 squats feel in tabata 20/10 for 4 minutes, than 405 in 20 minutes.

Comment #296 - Posted by: DrEric at December 17, 2006 4:02 PM

I think I did Mary last time, so I did Cindy today.

Completely did not pay attention to how many rounds I was doing. I guess maybe I was thinking about the new place I was doing it, in my garage.

definitely did at least 14 rounds plus 1 pull-up rep.
Possibly, although doubtful, because I see some CF veterans seem to be doing these numbers, I did 20 rounds plus 1 pull-up rep. Likely the former. We'll find out next time I do Cindy I guess.

All pull-ups strict, only started breaking them up in the last four or five rounds. Tried to make sure my back was straight for the push-ups, and I went all the way down for the pull-ups. Push-ups were also broken toward the end only getting about 6 completed before a ten or fifteen second break.

Saturday I did Cindy, my first WOD ever. I thought I was in pretty good shape and my goal was 17 rounds. Well, I only did 10 plus 1 pull up. Freaking kicked my butt! I love it! My wife was laughing at me because after the third round I really had to slow way down and pace myself. I see why this is so addictive, I'm already hooked!

Comment #309 - Posted by: Peeps at December 18, 2006 8:22 AM

Cindy was good. I had to go to the assisted for set 8-18 50lbs off bwt.
Allie: BWT 186 18 rounds with 4 65lb turkish getups after. was trying for 8 but Pukie snuck up on me. everyone was looking. I Love this stuff, I Love YOU!!!

17 rounds + 5 pull ups... PR on Cindy. I should have gone faster as I felt strong at the end. Paced myself too much...

As for graduating to Mary for this WOD, should I be shooting for over 20 rounds on Cindy before I move to Mary or more/less or just exercise my personal preference?

8 rounds of Mary plus 12 extra hspu. Pullups toward the end were ugly.
my first time doing this one. I think I like it. In a bad way.
Wanna send a shout out to my peeps at Emerald Coast.

Olivia
13 sets + 5 pull ups + 7 push ups,
took me about 10 sets to get warmed up and still recovering from a cold! Push ups really slowed me down.

Mary
9 Rounds (+5+10+4) (pr)

Comment #323 - Posted by: Karl Blanke at December 18, 2006 4:24 PM

Mary: 7 rounds on the nose.

Never done "real" HSPUs on Mary before, so I can't really compare scores. This certainly whooped me though, and the pull-ups were definitely the most intimidating exercise out of the group.

3 months into Crossfit. body weight 207#. Did Cindy once, this time I tried a cindy/mary hybrid. Can't do HSPU's in my apartment, but I do have a pullup bar and rings, so I did

7 ring pushups, legs up 18" on a chair
10 Pistols, alternating
10 pullups ( can't do a real kip in my apartment, so they were kip/dead hang hybrids)

8 rounds in 20 minutes, but in round 7 my right leg gave out, so I had to do 15 regular squats for rounds 7 and 8.

Cindy: 14 Rounds +5+10+12

Wanted that 15th, came up a bit short, but still did better than last time by more than two rounds. VERY pleased. Close to my PR of 16 achieved just before shoulder injury ths spring.

Form better this time too, no assists on any exercises.

completed on 18 dec:
10 pu
15 pu
20 squats

18 or 19 rounds in a little over 20minutes
couldn't remember the exact numbers but knew they increased by 5 between exercises and 5 chinups seemed too few.
